0:00:21 > 0:00:24but the company is expected to hold off on the sale of most

0:00:24 > 0:00:25of its UK business.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28And the Wales team who made history in France prepare for a heroes'

0:00:28 > 0:00:29welcome home tomorrow.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Good evening.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49It lasted five days, left more than a thousand Welshmen

0:00:49 > 0:00:53dead or missing, around 3,000 wounded.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Today marks the centenary of the battle of Mametz Wood

0:00:55 > 0:00:57in northern France, where soldiers from across Wales were told

0:00:57 > 0:00:59to assault a German strongpoint.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Today, services were held across Wales as well as

0:01:01 > 0:01:02a special ceremony in France.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04Roger Pinney reports.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09The music played by the band of the Royal Welsh would have been

0:01:09 > 0:01:12familiar to those who fought here a hundred years ago.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16It included the marches of their regiments.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20We are here today to remember but also to thank.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23And today was a time to remember.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Those who travelled to Mametz Wood for the ceremony came

0:01:26 > 0:01:32from all aspects of Welsh life, just as the soldiers of 1916 did.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44As wreaths were laid, there was a reminder of the terrible

0:01:44 > 0:01:46toll of the battle for Mametz Wood.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49In 15 minutes, the losses were greater than the British Army's

0:01:49 > 0:01:5215 years in Afghanistan.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Anita Jordan's uncle, Oliver Loosemore from Penrhiwceiber,

0:01:55 > 0:01:57was among those who died.

0:01:57 > 0:02:02He came out here in May and he died of wounds as a result

0:02:02 > 0:02:05of the battle on July the 11th.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08You are standing here on his ground.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10Yes, on his ground.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14That is a very emotional for me, as you can imagine.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18I think how proud my father would have been to stand

0:02:18 > 0:02:20here in honour of his brother.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23For those who were here, going through the mud,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26walking over barbed wire, towards gunfire,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29and yet still they did it.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33I think it is difficult for us to understand that and that is why

0:02:33 > 0:02:36it is so important for us to remember it.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38For five days the Welsh fought here.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Time and time again they threw themselves at the wood.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46By the time they were relieved, accounts of the time talk

0:02:46 > 0:02:49of this valley strewn with the dead and wounded.

0:02:49 > 0:02:544,000 lost - that's a third of the division's infantry strength.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58And back home there were events to remember those from Wales

0:02:58 > 0:03:03who lost their lives at Mametz Wood and throughout the First World War.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07From Cardiff to Caernarfon, hundreds attended ceremonies

0:03:07 > 0:03:10to recall all those Welsh men and women who made

0:03:10 > 0:03:13the ultimate sacrifice.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18We've become used now to the grainy black and white images of war.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22This remarkable film was recorded during the Battle of the Somme

0:03:22 > 0:03:26and then shown to packed picture houses back home.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31And some still photographs survive of the aftermath at Mametz Wood.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Here, a wounded soldier is returning through the trenches.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38Other pictures show damage caused by hours of shelling.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42They give a flavour but can't fully convey the horror.

0:03:42 > 0:03:4530 years ago, BBC Wales interviewed men who lived through it.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49They included Albert Evans of the 16th Cardiff City battalion

0:03:49 > 0:03:51of the Welch Regiment.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55Alf Jackson of the 14th Swansea Welch and Williams Davies

0:03:55 > 0:03:58of the 11th South Wales Borderers.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02They did not have two shell us because they were mowing us down

0:04:02 > 0:04:05with the rifle fire, the snipers and machine guns.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09I ran through, up to the edge of the wood.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12When I looked at the wood, it was all demolished.

0:04:12 > 0:04:18Branches down, trunks stripped, trunks lying down,

0:04:18 > 0:04:20stumps on the ground.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24Two Welsh rugby internationals were killed at Mametz,

0:04:24 > 0:04:27including Dick Thomas, a collier turned policeman

0:04:27 > 0:04:30who played in two Grand Slam winning sides.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34The Welsh Rugby Union has put his shirt and caps on display.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38We have this remarkable account of his death.

0:04:38 > 0:04:43I remember this huge man down lying down in front of me.

0:04:43 > 0:04:48He got up on his knees and two hands on the ground, went down

0:04:48 > 0:04:52to the ground, killed like that.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Just in front of you?

0:04:55 > 0:05:00Just in front of me, and I hid behind him all day.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Many of those who died at Mametz Wood are buried at this

0:05:03 > 0:05:06ceremony, near to where they fell.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21It is inside this building, the headquarters of the Tata Group

0:06:21 > 0:06:25in Mumbai, that the Tata Steel board meets and the meeting on Friday

0:06:25 > 0:06:28is particularly significant because it is the first time

0:06:31 > 0:06:34to leave the European Union.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39That has huge implications for Tata Steel's business in Europe.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43In March, the company had announced it wants to sell off its entire

0:06:56 > 0:07:00access to such a key market.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03It is just another complication in what is already

0:07:03 > 0:07:06a complex sale negotiation.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14process on hold until there is some clarity on what the Brexit vote

0:07:40 > 0:07:45it maintains its offer to take a 25% stake in whatever deal is struck to

0:07:45 > 0:07:48buy Tata Steel's British operations.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52But the company has said it has been losing ?1 million a day for more

0:07:52 > 0:07:56than a year in the UK and finally it will be up to the board in that

0:08:20 > 0:08:21From Lyon, Tomos Dafydd reports.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25Heading home after a football adventure which has lasted longer

0:08:25 > 0:08:28than anyone could have imagined.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31This morning, some were still celebrating what they had achieved

0:08:31 > 0:08:35and, for the manager, a chance to spend time with the family.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38In Lyon, the mass exodus of Wales fans started early.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19and it is about the bigger picture as well.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22We are disappointed now but we will pick ourselves back up.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24We have got loads of confidence.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26A defeat does not damage this bunch

0:09:26 > 0:09:29and we will pick ourselves up for the next trip and go again.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32What a performance from the team in the tournament.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35And as a country as well, we have added to the tournament.
