:00:14. > :00:16.campaign, pledging "a new deal" for Britain.

:00:17. > :00:19.Speaking to supporters at Coleg y Cymmoedd in Nantgarw,

:00:20. > :00:22.the MP for Pontypridd said that while he supports Jeremy Corbyn's

:00:23. > :00:24.anti-austerity agenda, he doesn't believe Mr Corbyn

:00:25. > :00:27.could ever be elected as Prime minister.

:00:28. > :00:32.Our political correspondent, Arwyn Jones reports.

:00:33. > :00:34.I am so proud to be stood here before you today.

:00:35. > :00:38.Owen Smith launched his campaign at his Pontypridd constituency

:00:39. > :00:40.he drew on his valleys background background,

:00:41. > :00:43.pleased his parents, wife and children were with him.

:00:44. > :00:46.And proud of an area which has shaped his Labour politics.

:00:47. > :00:49.He spoke of his grandparents Jack and Aggie, people who were not party

:00:50. > :00:53.members but benefited from past Labour governments who created great

:00:54. > :00:58.I think many of us feel in the movement that we have

:00:59. > :01:02.lost our way from those old times and those great ambitions and those

:01:03. > :01:10.And I think Jack and Aggie would have looked at the party right

:01:11. > :01:15.now and would have been horrified that we are not on the pitch,

:01:16. > :01:19.we're not fighting for our people in the way in which we ought to.

:01:20. > :01:22.The town of Pontypridd is named after the bridge that

:01:23. > :01:25.sits over the River Taff and according to his supporters,

:01:26. > :01:29.Mr Smith could also reconnect the party and the electorate.

:01:30. > :01:33.What Owen possesses that Jeremy doesn't is the leadership skills

:01:34. > :01:37.and I think you need that to unify the party,

:01:38. > :01:42.If we have Owen as our leader, we will have somebody

:01:43. > :01:45.who is credible in government but also someone who will take

:01:46. > :01:49.the party in the direction clearly many people, especially the people

:01:50. > :01:55.But in Pontypridd there are also plenty of people who support

:01:56. > :01:58.the current Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

:01:59. > :02:01.He has done a lot of good things in the last year,

:02:02. > :02:03.in a short period of time and with real opposition

:02:04. > :02:08.You have Owen Smith coming out with anti-austerity

:02:09. > :02:11.and so is Angela Eagle, they're copying him to get supporters.

:02:12. > :02:14.Mr Smith said he wanted tackling inequality to be at the heart

:02:15. > :02:17.of his campaign as he tries to become the first Welshman in over

:02:18. > :02:24.The mother of Olympic cyclist Chris Boardman has died

:02:25. > :02:26.after a collision with a car while she was cycling

:02:27. > :02:30.Carol Boardman was taken to hospital with serious injuries following

:02:31. > :02:31.the collision in Connah's Quay yesterday afternoon.

:02:32. > :02:41.A racing cyclist in her own right - Carol Boardman gave up competitive

:02:42. > :02:47.Today her son - Olympic gold-medallist Chris Boardman -
