:00:00. > :00:08.picture of too much doom and gloom. The weekend is not looking that bad.

:00:09. > :00:12.The Labour leadership battle moves to Cardiff for the first official

:00:13. > :00:17.Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn takes on challenger Owen Smith.

:00:18. > :00:24.The stage is set and its down to the two contenders to convince

:00:25. > :00:40.these party members that they're the right man to lead their party.

:00:41. > :00:48.One of the country's top water companies denies claims that it's

:00:49. > :00:50.responsible for dried out springs and sinking land.

:00:51. > :00:52.The nursery being investigated after a little boy was left

:00:53. > :00:56.unaccompanied on a minibus for two hours has reopened.

:00:57. > :00:59.In tonight's sport, we're live in Rio

:01:00. > :01:05.Can they top last time's haul of seven medals?

:01:06. > :01:08.And David Beckham would be happy with this one.

:01:09. > :01:18.Good evening. us this season.

:01:19. > :01:21.600 people - all members of the Labour party -

:01:22. > :01:23.are gathering tonight for what promises to be a key event

:01:24. > :01:27.Getting underway in Cardiff in the next hour,

:01:28. > :01:29.the current leader Jeremy Corbyn will take on the only

:01:30. > :01:33.challenger for his role, the Pontypridd MP Owen Smith.

:01:34. > :01:36.It's their first head to head debate.

:01:37. > :01:38.Our political reporter Cemlyn Davies is there.

:01:39. > :01:59.The stage is set and we are expecting 600 Labour Party members

:02:00. > :02:05.to arrive here ready to hear what Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith had to

:02:06. > :02:09.say. There are Labour MPs, and of course ordinary members of the

:02:10. > :02:11.Labour Party, all hoping that an event tonight will help them decide

:02:12. > :02:14.who to elect as Labour leader. These are the two men competing

:02:15. > :02:17.to be Labour leader. The two men now preparing to go head

:02:18. > :02:20.to head for the first Jeremy Corbyn has

:02:21. > :02:23.done all this before. Here he is taking part

:02:24. > :02:29.in a leadership hustings in Cardiff. He went on to win the race

:02:30. > :02:34.with an overwhelming majority. Ahead of this evening's debate,

:02:35. > :02:37.Mr Corbyn has been campaigning in Dagenham where he pledged

:02:38. > :02:41.to rebuild Britain. Our first principle is that

:02:42. > :02:43.prosperity that a few enjoy Our economic model

:02:44. > :02:50.in Britain is broken. But there are immense potential

:02:51. > :02:53.and skills in the talents of our people and huge opportunities

:02:54. > :02:56.ahead of us in science, We could all be living richer lives

:02:57. > :03:02.in a sustainable, more prosperous Mr Corbyn continues to enjoy

:03:03. > :03:08.the support of thousands of grassroots members, many of them

:03:09. > :03:13.flock to his rallies but others, including the vast majority

:03:14. > :03:18.of Labour MPs, claim his leadership style has made the party unelectable

:03:19. > :03:24.and it's time for change at the top. The Pontypridd MP is

:03:25. > :03:29.Mr Corbyn's only challenger. He claims to share the current

:03:30. > :03:33.leader's left-wing values and there are broad similarities

:03:34. > :03:37.between both men's policies. However, in contrast to Mr Corbyn,

:03:38. > :03:40.Owen Smith is in favour of renewing One example of his more pragmatic

:03:41. > :03:47.approach and readiness to appeal Mr Smith believes he's the man

:03:48. > :03:54.to unite a deeply divided party. People want Labour to be a united,

:03:55. > :03:58.strong opposition to the Tories that they feel is doing such damage

:03:59. > :04:02.to our communities and they want us to look like a credible

:04:03. > :04:05.government in waiting. We don't look like that under Jeremy

:04:06. > :04:08.and I'm determined that I'm going to get Labour back

:04:09. > :04:11.to where we need to be - a credible, radical

:04:12. > :04:13.government in waiting. Owen Smith may not have

:04:14. > :04:16.run for leader before, but he did represent Labour

:04:17. > :04:19.in the Welsh TV debates ahead It's now time to prepare

:04:20. > :04:25.for another bout. This is a very important opportunity

:04:26. > :04:27.for both candidates. Politics is all about perception

:04:28. > :04:31.and both men will be looking to shape public perceptions of

:04:32. > :04:34.themselves and frame their opponent, Up to now, this increasingly bitter

:04:35. > :04:40.leadership race has been fought Tonight, Jeremy Corbyn

:04:41. > :04:46.and Owen Smith will finally come face to face in front of some

:04:47. > :04:50.of the party members who will decide which one will be crowned Labour

:04:51. > :05:07.leader on the 24th of September. Let's have a word with two Labour

:05:08. > :05:13.members who will be helping to elect the Labour leader. This man is here

:05:14. > :05:18.supporting Jeremy Corbyn -- women. You are in Alan Smith supporter. Is

:05:19. > :05:24.there anything that Owen Smith could stay here tonight that will change

:05:25. > :05:34.your mind? -- Owen Smith. I don't think so. I am behind Corbyn. As

:05:35. > :05:39.soon as Corbyn put at an, I went to said please back Corbyn. I was

:05:40. > :05:45.delighted when he got through. Unfortunately, Owen Smith, I am

:05:46. > :05:48.happy to see what yesterday but when he said that he would happily press

:05:49. > :05:56.the button on millions of people with Trident and is to renew it, I

:05:57. > :06:01.would never vote for a leader that would be able to kill millions of

:06:02. > :06:05.people. Due accept that what when Smith is doing is appealing to that

:06:06. > :06:10.centre ground and trying to make this party is something which can

:06:11. > :06:16.oppose the Government currently? And Jeremy Corbyn can't do that? The

:06:17. > :06:21.centre ground no longer works. We need socialism in this country. We

:06:22. > :06:28.no longer want to have an elite minority ruling the majority and

:06:29. > :06:32.taking advantage. We need change and Jeremy Corbyn is the man to bring

:06:33. > :06:35.that arranged for us. Seem at first question to you but is there

:06:36. > :06:38.anything that Jenny Corbyn could say tonight that will persuade you? 2015

:06:39. > :06:40.National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence and Security

:06:41. > :06:44.Review unfortunately not because Jamie has had ten months as leader

:06:45. > :06:54.of the party and he has shown no real leadership. There. I can't

:06:55. > :07:00.really say at the moment what we stand for. If I can see that, what

:07:01. > :07:04.can be publicly? Owen Smith has said recently that if Jeremy Corbyn is

:07:05. > :07:09.re-elected, that could lead to the Labour Party is letting. I those

:07:10. > :07:12.comments helpful to your party? I think a split would be the worst

:07:13. > :07:18.thing could have because when you split the party, firstly, at the end

:07:19. > :07:24.of this campaign, whoever wins either side, we shall have one

:07:25. > :07:29.united party. That's not going to happen though, is it? Time will

:07:30. > :07:34.tell, I don't know. We'll wait and see what they say. Thank you both

:07:35. > :07:40.very much for your time. Go and take your seat and listen to the debate.

:07:41. > :07:44.The debate will be broadcast online on Labour's website and will have a

:07:45. > :07:46.full report in her late bulletin. Thank you.

:07:47. > :07:48.A water bottling company has strongly denied claims that

:07:49. > :07:50.it could be causing environmental damage in the countryside

:07:51. > :07:53.Landowners and environmentalists have raised the alarm claiming

:07:54. > :07:57.land is sinking and the natural springs drying up close

:07:58. > :08:01.to Princes Gate Spring Water in Pembrokeshire.

:08:02. > :08:04.Natural Resources Wales say they are powerless to investigate -

:08:05. > :08:08.until a new law comes into force later this year.

:08:09. > :08:14.This area used to be a prime spot for salmon and sea trout.

:08:15. > :08:18.The water level came to the bottom of the tree.

:08:19. > :08:23.The last four, five, six years, the water level's dropped

:08:24. > :08:26.so considerably that there's no access for the fish

:08:27. > :08:34.We're in Prices Gate, not far from the springwater

:08:35. > :08:41.Last year, the factory announced a major expansion sinking

:08:42. > :08:45.new boreholes to increase production to a potential equivalent

:08:46. > :08:52.But there are concerns it could be having an adverse effect.

:08:53. > :09:01.I think what's going on here is industrial scale

:09:02. > :09:07.All my friends and associates, farmers and anglers,

:09:08. > :09:15.They've got ground sinkage and loss of water.

:09:16. > :09:17.The natural spring water in this part of Pembrokeshire comes

:09:18. > :09:20.from an aquifer running along this ridgeway supplying a network

:09:21. > :09:23.of streams, which many landowners, a local quarry and farmers

:09:24. > :09:29.Seven have contacted Natural Resources Wales,

:09:30. > :09:32.complaining the water table has dropped in the last

:09:33. > :09:36.few years with springs, like this one, now run dry.

:09:37. > :09:40.We're not asking people to stop bottling and selling water

:09:41. > :09:44.or using water or extracting it in any way whatsoever.

:09:45. > :09:48.We're asking that a proper look is taken at the environment

:09:49. > :09:52.and that the limits are set so that the environment is not drying out.

:09:53. > :09:54.Because Princes Gate are not the only ones

:09:55. > :09:57.abstracting water in this area, they strongly deny that

:09:58. > :10:01.their operations are responsible, saying they brought in industry

:10:02. > :10:05.experts and can find no truth in the allegations.

:10:06. > :10:09.Adding, they monitor with extreme care all water they abstract,

:10:10. > :10:13.measuring the quality, table heights and flow to ensure

:10:14. > :10:15.they meet the highest standard of corporate, social

:10:16. > :10:22.They also say Natural Resources Wales has found no

:10:23. > :10:27.basis for these claims, but the NRW told us they've not

:10:28. > :10:32.investigated them because currently they have no powers to do so.

:10:33. > :10:36.In this part of the country, at the moment, you don't need

:10:37. > :10:38.a licence to extract water from the ground.

:10:39. > :10:40.But legally that position will change later this year

:10:41. > :10:43.with a new water act coming into force.

:10:44. > :10:46.Natural Resources Wales say, when it does, licenses will only be

:10:47. > :10:51.granted if it can be shown they don't have an adverse

:10:52. > :10:56.But operators will have a two year window to apply and there are fears

:10:57. > :11:06.The family of a four year-old boy who died in a house fire

:11:07. > :11:09.can begin planning his funeral, after a hearing into his death

:11:10. > :11:12.was opened and adjourned at Swansea Coroners Court.

:11:13. > :11:14.Jac Davies died following the blaze at his family's

:11:15. > :11:22.A preinquest into his death will be held in January.

:11:23. > :11:24.The UK government has welcomed a move by the EU to impose

:11:25. > :11:29.tariffs on a steel product from China and Russia.

:11:30. > :11:32.Cold rolled steel - which is used in white goods and cars -

:11:33. > :11:35.is also produced at TATA's plant in Port Talbot.

:11:36. > :11:38.Many observers have blamed the dumping of cheaper imports

:11:39. > :11:49.for the difficulties the UK steel industry has been experiencing.

:11:50. > :11:51.The latest radio listening figures show that audiences

:11:52. > :11:54.for BBC Radio Wales and Radio Cymru have reached their lowest

:11:55. > :11:58.The ratings were described as "disappointing" by BBC Wales.

:11:59. > :12:01.Our arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas has been taking a look.

:12:02. > :12:17.This data covers the period from April through to June this year.

:12:18. > :12:22.Radio Wales weekly audience has now dropped to 333,000 listeners

:12:23. > :12:27.compared to the previous quarter, a drop of 47000 and compared the same

:12:28. > :12:30.time last year, 70 5000. The silver lining is that those listeners still

:12:31. > :12:39.tuning in and listening for longer each week. It has also reached a

:12:40. > :12:44.record low and is getting 103,000 weekly visitors compared to the

:12:45. > :12:49.previous quarter, down by 9000 and compared to same time last year, a

:12:50. > :12:54.drop of 13,000 listeners. This is all live listen to the radio, it

:12:55. > :12:58.doesn't include podcast or catch-up services. The body that these

:12:59. > :13:02.figures together it says 90% of radio listening is still happening

:13:03. > :13:08.live. What's caused the drop in figures? There's no easy answer to

:13:09. > :13:11.that. Listen to the reader in the UK reached one of its highest ever

:13:12. > :13:17.levels and there were again for some stations in the commercial media

:13:18. > :13:21.sector in Wales. This was a busy time in Wales, the assembly

:13:22. > :13:30.elections, the EU referendum, football championships. Today, the

:13:31. > :13:36.BBC wouldn't put anyone up for interview. It did say that the deal

:13:37. > :13:38.coming was the favourite for a fluent Welsh speakers but for radio

:13:39. > :13:44.Wales, it said it was disappointed but those figures. They are service

:13:45. > :13:47.broadcasters and their remit is to provide a certain amount of music,

:13:48. > :13:50.information and information and sport and the detail is how to

:13:51. > :13:54.deliver that. The person of music, information and sport and the detail

:13:55. > :13:55.is how to deliver that. The personalities Beth and Jenkins is

:13:56. > :13:57.cheering that committee. It's very difficult for people to be

:13:58. > :14:00.able to provide a service for all people for all ages

:14:01. > :14:03.and ideally we would have various different channels here

:14:04. > :14:05.in Wales which is something Although that would demand

:14:06. > :14:08.new budgets and new It's definitely something that

:14:09. > :14:34.the committee would want to look at. . Those audiences will be tuning in

:14:35. > :14:35.again by next year. You're watching Wales today.

:14:36. > :14:39.Tonight, we're live in Rio as the Welsh olympians arrive.

:14:40. > :14:41.Can they top last time's haul of seven medals?

:14:42. > :14:44.And high pressure bringing a fine end to the working week.

:14:45. > :14:56.The nursery in Aberystwyth involved with a child being left

:14:57. > :14:59.on a minibus for two hours on the hottest day of

:15:00. > :15:02.Camau Bach was closed for a fortnight -

:15:03. > :15:06.An inquiry by the Care and Social Services

:15:07. > :15:14.After two weeks, parents were eventually allowed

:15:15. > :15:17.to bring their children back to Camau Bach Nursery this morning.

:15:18. > :15:20.An investigation is still ongoing into just how a three-year-old boy

:15:21. > :15:22.could be left alone on their minibus for two hours

:15:23. > :15:28.The member of staff responsible for the child was immediately

:15:29. > :15:34.However, there's still concern from many parents.

:15:35. > :15:35.For Rachel Harrison, it's her daughter's

:15:36. > :15:39.Working full time, this is the most convenient nursery

:15:40. > :15:44.I have no other option, unfortunately.

:15:45. > :15:48.I have to work, I have to earn a living and this is my only

:15:49. > :15:50.option at the moment to send my daughter here.

:15:51. > :15:53.I've also spoken to some parents who want to remain anonymous.

:15:54. > :15:56.One parent told me she took her children straight out of the nursery

:15:57. > :15:59.the day after the incident as she was so concerned.

:16:00. > :16:02.Another parent told me she would take her child out of this

:16:03. > :16:05.nursery but has been unable to because she can't find

:16:06. > :16:10.Because she works full-time, she has no other alternative

:16:11. > :16:14.but today she was scared to send her child back.

:16:15. > :16:18.Finding places at an alternative has proved difficult for many parents

:16:19. > :16:21.with the closure of Penglais nursery in the town just this week.

:16:22. > :16:34.While private Nursery Little Angels has taken on two children.

:16:35. > :16:36.Luke Veasey and Amanda Gwalchma were considering sending

:16:37. > :16:37.their three-month-old baby to Camau Bach.

:16:38. > :16:40.Obviously with what happened, he's definitely not going to go

:16:41. > :16:42.there now but we probably would have sent him.

:16:43. > :16:51.Many parents are just relieved it's reopened and want to move on.

:16:52. > :16:54.Obviously want to see the full report of what happened

:16:55. > :16:57.and how everything is going to be going forward.

:16:58. > :17:00.I'm perfectly happy, she's always gone in with a smile

:17:01. > :17:03.on her face and she's always come out with a smile on her face.

:17:04. > :17:06.I've always found the staff here very good.

:17:07. > :17:09.This is a flagship nursery for the charity, Med e ad May thrin

:17:10. > :17:12.and today they confirmed a member of staff still remains suspended.

:17:13. > :17:14.The council safeguarding board has now completed its enquiry

:17:15. > :17:17.and they say the nursery will continue to work closely

:17:18. > :17:21.with the care and social services inspectorate to ensure appropriate

:17:22. > :17:29.Let me take you to the National Eisteddfod in Abergavenny the welsh

:17:30. > :17:32.learner of the year award has gone to a woman from Brynmawr

:17:33. > :17:49.who changed the degree course she was studying to learn Welsh.

:17:50. > :17:52.Hannah Roberts, who was honoured at a ceremony in the main pavillion,

:17:53. > :17:54.had been studying geography at Aberystwyth University

:17:55. > :17:56.but after completing a Welsh course in the summer holidays decided

:17:57. > :18:13.It's unbelievable to be honest. The icing on the cake. All my hard work

:18:14. > :18:18.has been for something special. The strangest thing is make as many

:18:19. > :18:22.mistakes as possible and try and lose the fright straightaway. Just

:18:23. > :18:26.enjoy it, it's not a race, just enjoy it because if you don't enjoy

:18:27. > :18:27.it, then you won't enjoy the language.

:18:28. > :18:29.The Drama medal went to Hefin Robinson from Carmarthen.

:18:30. > :18:33.He came third in the competition two years ago and second last year.

:18:34. > :18:36.His drama Estron meaning 'foreigner or stranger' beat off

:18:37. > :18:37.competition from eleven other entrants this year.

:18:38. > :18:40.And finally one of the oldest competitors the National Eisteddfod

:18:41. > :18:52.has ever seen took to the stage this afternoon for the final time.

:18:53. > :18:54.Helen Jones from Brecon, who's 100 at the end

:18:55. > :18:59.of the month, has been competing since she was four years old.

:19:00. > :19:01.She learnt to speak Welsh and says the Eisteddfod has

:19:02. > :19:05.helped her to improve but at 99 years old

:19:06. > :19:10.she's now putting her performing days behind her.

:19:11. > :19:12.In the limelight now, the fresh- faced spring chicken Tomos Dafydd

:19:13. > :19:19.Soon it'll be time for our Olympians to take centre stage.

:19:20. > :19:22.Tomorrow night the opening ceremony takes place in Rio.

:19:23. > :19:25.The build-up has been marred by problems.

:19:26. > :19:27.Hundreds have been demonstrating against the high cost

:19:28. > :19:32.Live now to Rio and Rhodri Llywelyn, any of this

:19:33. > :19:47.I wouldn't have thought so. The Games are costing 9 billion pounds

:19:48. > :19:52.to stage in Brazil. Much of that money spent on the Olympic Park

:19:53. > :19:56.behind me in the glorious sunshine this evening and the many people in

:19:57. > :20:01.this country which are suffering a deep recession at the moment, the

:20:02. > :20:06.price is too high. The athletes, the year to compete to win medals and

:20:07. > :20:07.those from Wales that I have spoken to are very, very determined. It all

:20:08. > :20:17.gets underway tomorrow. Rio is gearing up for its biggest

:20:18. > :20:24.ever Carnival and there are 23 Welsh athletes ready to take centre stage.

:20:25. > :20:29.It's amazing. It's just good to be in the village and see everything

:20:30. > :20:33.and take everything in. I just can't wait to get going. I've worked for

:20:34. > :20:39.the last eight years of my life and I'm here. This is all I've wanted.

:20:40. > :20:43.If I don't come away with a medal, I'll be very disappointed.

:20:44. > :20:47.Transformed into a state-of-the-art training facility, here at the

:20:48. > :20:52.British School in Rio many of the mid-GB athletes have been doing

:20:53. > :20:57.their final preparations. The whole place is managed during the games by

:20:58. > :21:00.a former Welsh rugby international. It is the marginal gains. A huge

:21:01. > :21:05.amount of work has gone into preparation beforehand that we are

:21:06. > :21:09.sport need that fine tuning in the lead in to the competing day, it's
