:00:07. > :00:09.Tonight's headlines: 19-year-old Georgia Fairthorne wasn't wearing

:00:10. > :00:12.a helmet when she was seriously injured in a skateboarding accident.

:00:13. > :00:14.Now a leading charity urges young skateboarders and cyclists

:00:15. > :00:21.Head injury can affect people in terms of their behaviour, in terms

:00:22. > :00:26.of their emotional well-being and also, physically, people can be

:00:27. > :00:44.affected and be left with long-term disabilities.

:00:45. > :00:47.Also tonight, Anglesey teenager Amy Brooke is in hospital

:00:48. > :00:50.with spinal injuries after a tree branch fell

:00:51. > :00:58.on her at a National Trust site on the island.

:00:59. > :01:03.It only re-opened to visitors a few years ago but at the end

:01:04. > :01:08.of the summer St Catherine's Island is shutting once more.

:01:09. > :01:12.A successful few days for Welsh athletes in Rio.

:01:13. > :01:17.Owain Doull and Elinor Barker win Olympic Gold for Team GB -

:01:18. > :01:21.a moment their families will never forget.

:01:22. > :01:24.I was the happiest sister in the world

:01:25. > :01:26.but it came across as a lot of sobbing.

:01:27. > :01:30.The definite crybaby of the family and super proud of Owain

:01:31. > :01:42.Every three minutes, someone in the UK is admitted

:01:43. > :01:45.to hospital with a head injury and, according to a leading brain-injury

:01:46. > :01:48.charity here in Wales, many of those injuries

:01:49. > :01:53.Headway are calling for helmets to be compulsory for all children

:01:54. > :01:57.who are cycling and believe skateboarders would also benefit

:01:58. > :02:01.It comes as a mother from Pembrokeshire is campaigning

:02:02. > :02:04.for new helmet laws after a skateboard accident left her

:02:05. > :02:14.It's fast and fun but the thrills can so easily turn into spills

:02:15. > :02:18.and for skateboarders who have no protection for their head,

:02:19. > :02:21.there can be devastating consequences.

:02:22. > :02:24.That is what happened to 19-year-old Georgia Fairthorne.

:02:25. > :02:27.She fell off a skateboard in Pembrokeshire while playing

:02:28. > :02:30.with her brother and sister ten days ago.

:02:31. > :02:33.She is now recovering in hospital in Cardiff where for

:02:34. > :02:38.As a result her mother Emma has launched a social media campaign

:02:39. > :02:46.Take care of your kids and get them a helmet

:02:47. > :02:50.when they are on their scooters or their skateboards.

:02:51. > :02:56.Emma Fairthorne has also launched an online petition calling

:02:57. > :03:01.for the government to make the wearing of helmets compulsory.

:03:02. > :03:05.But within the skating community, there are mixed views.

:03:06. > :03:08.Guto Williams runs this popular store in Cardiff and is an advocate

:03:09. > :03:11.of safe skateboarding but he says there is resistance

:03:12. > :03:17.Believe it or not, head injuries are really rare in skateboarding.

:03:18. > :03:21.It's an action sport so it is quite dangerous but it is quite rare.

:03:22. > :03:25.That said, we strongly advise children and beginners

:03:26. > :03:33.The Headway charity at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff

:03:34. > :03:36.helps people who have had brain injuries, some from accidents.

:03:37. > :03:40.They believe a sizeable proportion of those injuries could have been

:03:41. > :03:45.Every three minutes a person is admitted to hospital in the UK

:03:46. > :03:49.with a head injury and some are permanently brain-damaged.

:03:50. > :03:52.Head injury can affect people in terms of their behaviour,

:03:53. > :03:57.in terms of their emotional well-being and also, physically,

:03:58. > :04:02.people can be affected and be left with long-term disabilities.

:04:03. > :04:04.And that is just what happened to Jeff.

:04:05. > :04:08.He's now 41 but as a teenager he came off his skateboard

:04:09. > :04:14.He was in a coma for six weeks and has suffered brain injuries

:04:15. > :04:52.Obviously you are a keen advocate of helmets?

:04:53. > :04:55.But the message is not getting through.

:04:56. > :04:58.None of these teenagers at this skate park on this Cardiff Bay

:04:59. > :05:01.barrage were wearing helmets and they say they really do.

:05:02. > :05:03.The better you get, the more you learn to fall safely

:05:04. > :05:06.and the less likely you are to get a head injury.

:05:07. > :05:11.Nothing has happened around my head area ever.

:05:12. > :05:15.If something does go wrong, we know how to protect our body

:05:16. > :05:22.What do you think the others would say if one of you

:05:23. > :05:30.But as Georgia Fairthorne and Jeff know,

:05:31. > :05:35.With the number of head injuries on the increase,

:05:36. > :05:38.their families are determined to keep up the pressure

:05:39. > :05:44.A teenager has also been seriously injured after a tree branch snapped

:05:45. > :05:47.and hit her at a National Trust site on Anglesey.

:05:48. > :05:50.18-year-old Amy Brooke was hit while she was at

:05:51. > :05:54.Her family have been waiting to hear whether or not she'll

:05:55. > :05:59.Matthew Richards joins us now from Plas Newydd.

:06:00. > :06:11.The area where this happened is a Woodland park just on the other side

:06:12. > :06:16.of the property behind me. I think we can show you a picture of the

:06:17. > :06:20.branch which snapped and fell on top of Amy Brooke. She had only been at

:06:21. > :06:25.Plas Newydd for about 15 minutes with a friend and she suffered a

:06:26. > :06:31.number of injuries to her lower back and spinal area. She is being cared

:06:32. > :06:34.for locally and we understand she is in a comfortable condition. There

:06:35. > :06:39.was some discussion as to whether she should be transferred to a

:06:40. > :06:43.specialist hospital in Stoke. Plas Newydd is a large estate, very

:06:44. > :06:49.popular with tourists. It has been very popular today. Bidders on the

:06:50. > :06:52.banks of the Menai Strait. Earlier, I asked a member of the trust to

:06:53. > :06:55.explain what they think happened. From the investigations that have

:06:56. > :06:57.been carried out so far, we believe that it might be,

:06:58. > :07:00.and I stress it might be, a phenomenon known as summer drop,

:07:01. > :07:02.where a healthy tree for no apparent reason suddenly

:07:03. > :07:05.drops a major branch. But it's very early days so I can't

:07:06. > :07:08.confirm that is actually the case and we will do everything we can

:07:09. > :07:20.to get the bottom of this So the investigation is already

:07:21. > :07:23.underway? There have been a number of National Trust experts having a

:07:24. > :07:29.look at the trees on the site today. All the areas where the public would

:07:30. > :07:34.normally walk have been created as no entry areas today and that will

:07:35. > :07:36.remain the case until at least tomorrow when the Health and Safety

:07:37. > :07:42.Executive will be on site to assess any problems. Ordinarily, the

:07:43. > :07:45.National Trust say they carry out visual inspections of the trees to

:07:46. > :07:50.make sure there are no obvious problems. They have expressed their

:07:51. > :07:54.sympathies to Amy Brooke and her family. They will try and get to the

:07:55. > :07:56.bottom of what happened to make sure they can open the site in full and

:07:57. > :07:59.to make sure that everyone is safe. Well, it was an extraordinary

:08:00. > :08:01.weekend for Team GB at the Rio Olympics and Welsh

:08:02. > :08:04.athletes certainly had their part The number of medals won by Welsh

:08:05. > :08:14.athletes competing for Team GB could reach double

:08:15. > :08:15.figures, according to Welsh athletes have equalled

:08:16. > :08:19.the record haul of medals Seven in medals in total -

:08:20. > :08:24.five silvers, in the swimming, rowing, rugby sevens

:08:25. > :08:27.and in the velodrome. Welsh cyclists have also

:08:28. > :08:30.delivered two gold medals. The good news is there's another

:08:31. > :08:33.week to go, with taekwondo's Jade Jones and sailor

:08:34. > :08:36.Hannah Mills competing. Becky James is going

:08:37. > :08:59.for her second medal. Terrific, wasn't it? It all started

:09:00. > :09:05.on Friday with Owain Doull and Jaz Carlin. Two medals in a day. Surely

:09:06. > :09:12.it could not happen again. Well, it did. We are still some way of the

:09:13. > :09:15.four golds of Antwerp in 1920. That includes four golds in the relay at

:09:16. > :09:18.the athletics but already these games are considered to be up there

:09:19. > :09:20.with the best ever for Welsh athletes.

:09:21. > :09:22.Gold medal winners, Olympic champions and Welsh.

:09:23. > :09:24.Owain Doull and the Great Britain team pursuit team won

:09:25. > :09:31.in world record time and celebrations soon followed.

:09:32. > :09:35.Feeling a bit worse for wear today, I will be honest.

:09:36. > :09:40.I think it's the only thing to do after three or four years

:09:41. > :09:45.You did not get led astray by Sir Bradley Wiggins, did you?

:09:46. > :09:56.Whether that is on the bike or off the bike.

:09:57. > :09:59.When we caught up with Wales' second gold medallist

:10:00. > :10:02.and world record-holder yesterday, Elinor Barker,

:10:03. > :10:13.I only turned my phone on a few hours ago to see what

:10:14. > :10:21.Everybody seemed to know what was going on.

:10:22. > :10:23.It did not seem like this worldwide thing.

:10:24. > :10:27.Having grown up together in Cardiff, riding for the same club as kids,

:10:28. > :10:31.they became Olympic champions within 24 hours of each other.

:10:32. > :10:34.But they are based these days in Manchester.

:10:35. > :10:37.Most of the Welsh athletes in Team GB train across the border

:10:38. > :10:41.but sporting chiefs insist that Wales has had an important

:10:42. > :10:47.85% of the team have had support from the Institute and Sport Wales.

:10:48. > :10:51.Sports science, sport medicine, so they have come through club

:10:52. > :10:55.systems and the majority have come through in Wales,

:10:56. > :10:58.which is about great coaching, great facilities, it is about

:10:59. > :11:02.starting them young and helping them develop their talent.

:11:03. > :11:04.It is exactly what is happening here.

:11:05. > :11:07.A chance to try cycling at a very young age.

:11:08. > :11:10.These sessions in Maindy in Cardiff are organised by Welsh Cycling,

:11:11. > :11:18.Their old coach says that Lottery money has transformed the sport.

:11:19. > :11:21.It has made a massive difference since it came along in 1997,

:11:22. > :11:24.just for the riders to be able to be full-time.

:11:25. > :11:26.They don't have to work alongside training.

:11:27. > :11:30.They can do everything they need to do and that is why

:11:31. > :11:38.Back in Rio, Welsh cycling success continued.

:11:39. > :11:42.After spending a difficult two years dealing with injury and a cancer

:11:43. > :11:50.She could win another medal in the sprint tomorrow.

:11:51. > :11:52.It does not even feel real right now.

:11:53. > :11:58.I knew I was stuck at the back and I did not know

:11:59. > :12:03.I didn't want to be stuck on the outside so I left

:12:04. > :12:08.Spectators wore red dragons with pride.

:12:09. > :12:11.This medical volunteer from North Wales

:12:12. > :12:13.cheering Welsh competitors on between sets.

:12:14. > :12:16.As soon as you mention Wales, everyone says Gareth Bale.

:12:17. > :12:19.Hopefully they will now mention our athletes doing well

:12:20. > :12:27.Jazz Carlin has certainly been one name everyone is talking about.

:12:28. > :12:31.A second silver, this time in the 800 metre freestyle,

:12:32. > :12:35.putting her up with the greats of Welsh swimming.

:12:36. > :12:38.It took a lot for me to get back in the pool

:12:39. > :12:42.and a lot for me to find that drive again but I am glad.

:12:43. > :12:48.The Rio Games are already amongst the most successful ever for Welsh

:12:49. > :12:52.athletes and with plenty of medal prospects to come, they could well

:12:53. > :13:07.I mentioned Becky James there. She broke Victoria Pendleton's Olympic

:13:08. > :13:12.record in sprint qualifying yesterday and made it through to the

:13:13. > :13:17.last eight today. The final is tomorrow. And Cardiff sailor Hannah

:13:18. > :13:19.Mills and her partner continue to lead in their class. There could be

:13:20. > :13:21.another successful week to come. I'll have the rest of the day's

:13:22. > :13:25.sport later in the programme. Still to come on the programme

:13:26. > :13:41.before seven o'clock: It has been reopened to the public

:13:42. > :13:44.after being closed since 1978 but now developers say problems mean it

:13:45. > :13:46.will once more have to close its doors.

:13:47. > :13:49.The whole of Wales basking in sunshine.

:13:50. > :13:51.Even warmer tomorrow but how long will it last?

:13:52. > :13:58.The chance of a split in the Labour Party is greater now

:13:59. > :14:04.That's the view of a Welsh Labour supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, who sits

:14:05. > :14:10.It comes amid a row over which party members can vote in the leadership

:14:11. > :14:14.election between Mr Corbyn and Pontypridd MP Owen Smith.

:14:15. > :14:16.Our political correspondent Daniel Davies has been speaking

:14:17. > :14:24.to party members, starting in Newport.

:14:25. > :14:31.Which direction for Labour? These three young members in Newport told

:14:32. > :14:36.me why they hope Owen Smith can topple Jeremy Corbyn. They are both

:14:37. > :14:41.Labour members and for them to share the same view, it is expected

:14:42. > :14:48.almost. The difference is that Jeremy Corbyn will not win a general

:14:49. > :14:52.election and Owen Smith can. You can have a traditional Labour leader

:14:53. > :14:55.becoming the next Prime Minister or you can opt for Jeremy Ayre, but you

:14:56. > :15:01.are just surrendering to the Conservatives. I would say even got

:15:02. > :15:06.a good chance. I would say don't listen to the hype around Jeremy

:15:07. > :15:10.Corbyn. Whoever wins will have to sell the party to a wider electorate

:15:11. > :15:15.and while the two campaigns trade blows over who should get that job,

:15:16. > :15:20.this contest has provided brisk business for the lawyers. There has

:15:21. > :15:23.been a tussle in the courts over who should vote. Labour members who

:15:24. > :15:29.joined in the last six months will not take part. A decision by the

:15:30. > :15:35.party's National Executive Committee upheld in the Court of Appeal last

:15:36. > :15:39.week. Harriet rejoined Labour to back Jeremy Corbyn. She paid an

:15:40. > :15:45.extra ?25 to make sure she could vote for him and she says trying to

:15:46. > :15:50.groom the electorate for this contest will fuel his campaign. The

:15:51. > :15:54.party is trying really hard to stop the left developing and getting

:15:55. > :15:57.votes and Jeremy but they are doing the opposite because we see

:15:58. > :16:00.thousands of people across the country turning up to his rallies.

:16:01. > :16:07.He is now the antiestablishment candidate. One Jeremy Corbyn

:16:08. > :16:11.supporter on the party's committee dismisses claims the far left is

:16:12. > :16:16.trying to infiltrate Labour. The idea that any significant proportion

:16:17. > :16:20.of the 300,000 members comes from any number of the tiny far left

:16:21. > :16:26.sects that we are talking about is ludicrous. And on the chance of

:16:27. > :16:29.labour splitting? There is more chance of us splitting now than

:16:30. > :16:34.there has been at any time in the recent past. I hope that can be

:16:35. > :16:37.avoided. I think whatever the outcome a few people will leave the

:16:38. > :16:45.party but I hope those figures will remain small. Owen Smith today

:16:46. > :16:48.attacked what he calls Tory plans to privatise in England. He says labour

:16:49. > :16:54.is heading for a crushing defeat if it does not change course. But the

:16:55. > :16:59.Jeremy Corbyn can claim today it has the overwhelming support of local

:17:00. > :17:02.constituency Labour parties. The result for this second Labour

:17:03. > :17:04.leadership election in as many years will be announced on the 24th of

:17:05. > :17:05.September. The recovery of an RAF helicopter

:17:06. > :17:09.which burst into flames in Snowdonia A chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham

:17:10. > :17:14.in Hampshire has been sent to move The training aircraft caught fire

:17:15. > :17:18.shortly after making an emergency All five people on board

:17:19. > :17:23.escaped unharmed. Figures suggest the number

:17:24. > :17:26.of shoppers in Wales has reached its highest level

:17:27. > :17:29.since June 2013. The figures from the British Retail

:17:30. > :17:32.Consortium show footfall was up by 1.7% here last month,

:17:33. > :17:36.with Wales outperforming But there's also been a small rise

:17:37. > :17:41.in the number of empty shops, We have seen some positive news

:17:42. > :17:47.from the footfall figures for the last three months

:17:48. > :17:50.and that is great news for consumers, great news for stores

:17:51. > :17:53.and great news for the 135,000 people who are employed

:17:54. > :17:56.in the retail sector. While that is positive,

:17:57. > :17:59.and we have a cautious optimism going forward,

:18:00. > :18:02.there is the downside at the moment where we are seeing an increase

:18:03. > :18:07.in the number of vacant premises. A multi-million pound Army drone

:18:08. > :18:10.was scrapped after it crashed at Aberporth Airfield in Ceredigion,

:18:11. > :18:13.according to a de-classified report. The 70 stone unmanned and unarmed

:18:14. > :18:16.air vehicle crashed during a test It was part of the Army's

:18:17. > :18:23.billion pounds Watchkeeper It only re-opened recently

:18:24. > :18:30.but St Catherine's Island near Tenby is to close at the end

:18:31. > :18:33.of this month. The island fort, opened as a tourist

:18:34. > :18:36.attraction last year after being shut since the 1970s

:18:37. > :18:40.but developing it further has become Abigail Neal is there

:18:41. > :18:57.for us tonight. It is a beautiful evening here in

:18:58. > :19:02.Tenby tonight but this scene really does illustrate one of the problems

:19:03. > :19:09.of developing St Catherine's Island as a tourist attraction. Namely, you

:19:10. > :19:13.are beholden to the tide. Those behind this venture had been

:19:14. > :19:18.planning to build some jetties so that you could arrive by boat but in

:19:19. > :19:21.the end they thought, because of circumstances, it was all grooving

:19:22. > :19:27.to costly. It is not just the glorious sunshine

:19:28. > :19:33.which set the scene. A backdrop like St Catherine's Island, enticing

:19:34. > :19:37.Tenby's villagers to explore. The island and its Napoleonic fort had

:19:38. > :19:43.been close to the public since 1978 but recently moves were made to

:19:44. > :19:48.regenerate this landmark. Last year, it was opened up for guided tours

:19:49. > :19:51.and, after a long road through planning, the idea to develop it as

:19:52. > :19:56.a tourist attraction was given approval. The developers had been

:19:57. > :19:59.looking to do more work here with a nature trail around the island,

:20:00. > :20:06.jetties to make it more accessible by boat and even an outdoor cafe up

:20:07. > :20:10.on the roof. But in the end of the restrictions involved made it

:20:11. > :20:14.financially unviable. Visitor numbers have been steady but not as

:20:15. > :20:22.high as had hoped and at the end of this month the doors will close once

:20:23. > :20:28.again. It will be a shame to lose it. Over 35 years I have been coming

:20:29. > :20:32.to Tenby and it is something I have been looking forward to be able to

:20:33. > :20:37.visit and it is really sad that it is due to close. Many are not too

:20:38. > :20:42.worried about the loss of this one attraction. After all, Tenby still

:20:43. > :20:47.has lots to offer. And some are optimistic this will not be the end.

:20:48. > :20:50.Hopefully there will be developers that can take it on and there are a

:20:51. > :20:56.number of other attractions that operate very successfully in the

:20:57. > :21:01.area. It may have been built for soldiers in the 19th century but the

:21:02. > :21:02.fort has had many uses since then. Although now it's next chapter looks

:21:03. > :21:13.uncertain. Inside, the fort has not changed

:21:14. > :21:16.much since it was first built in 1870 but it has had various

:21:17. > :21:21.incarnations over the years, including most bizarrely as a zoo at

:21:22. > :21:24.one point. But come September, St Catherine's Island will go back once

:21:25. > :21:26.again to being cut off and inaccessible.

:21:27. > :21:29.Let's get the rest of the day's sport now with Tomos.

:21:30. > :21:33.First to football, and Arsenal have confirmed the Wales midfielder

:21:34. > :21:36.Aaron Ramsey has a hamstring injury and is being assessed by the club.

:21:37. > :21:38.In exactly three weeks, Wales will start their World Cup

:21:39. > :21:43.qualifying campaign against Moldova at the Cardiff City Stadium.
