:00:00. > :00:07.Tonight's headlines: Hoping to make history -

:00:08. > :00:10.cyclist Becky James goes for gold tonight.

:00:11. > :00:12.A medal of any colour would mean a record haul for Welsh

:00:13. > :00:27.An emotional wreck. It has been so stressful. I can't imagine what

:00:28. > :00:37.Becky must be feeling. Happy now she has got through to the semifinals.

:00:38. > :00:40.She already has an individual silver medal at these games. We will know

:00:41. > :00:44.by the end of the evening whether she can add to the tally are not.

:00:45. > :00:48.There could be a medal in the sailing.

:00:49. > :00:50.This is where Hannah Mills spent much of her time

:00:51. > :00:53.Can she turn London silver into Rio gold?

:00:54. > :00:55.Also tonight, looking beyond the beautiful scenery.

:00:56. > :01:02.Could litter and a lack of public toilets be turning tourists away

:01:03. > :01:10.But we'll be asking why most new mothers in some of our poorest

:01:11. > :01:27.communities still prefer to bottle feed their babies.

:01:28. > :01:34.History beckons for Becky James and for Wales.

:01:35. > :01:37.She's going for gold for Great Britain in Rio tonight

:01:38. > :01:40.and if she wins a medal of any colour it will be a record

:01:41. > :01:48.haul for Welsh athletes at an Olympic Games.

:01:49. > :01:51.Sailor Hannah Mills from Dinas Powys could soon secure another gold too.

:01:52. > :01:53.In a moment, we'll speak to Tomos Dafydd at

:01:54. > :01:55.Cardiff Bay Yacht Club - Hannah Mills' home club.

:01:56. > :01:57.But first let's hear from our reporter who's

:01:58. > :02:01.We're in between sessions here at the moment, but in less

:02:02. > :02:04.than two hours' time this velodrome will be the focus for

:02:05. > :02:11.Abegevenny's Becky James will be back on this track

:02:12. > :02:14.fighting for a place in the women's sprint final.

:02:15. > :02:17.If she does it, then what a story for an athlete who has openly

:02:18. > :02:20.admitted that two years ago she was in a really unhappy place

:02:21. > :02:41.One win away from a medal, two whens away from goal. Automated code

:02:42. > :02:45.before Becky James and Wales at the velodrome. Already a silver

:02:46. > :02:49.medallist at these games, the former double world champion could soon be

:02:50. > :02:54.adding to her collection. And Becky has been so impressive in

:02:55. > :03:00.qualification. An Olympic record on Sunday and she has just cruised past

:03:01. > :03:04.the world champion of China to secure her place in the final four.

:03:05. > :03:08.And years ago Rio seemed like a distant dream for this Abergavenny

:03:09. > :03:13.girl. Illness and injury made her question the sport she loved. It has

:03:14. > :03:21.been a journey for the whole family. An emotional wreck. So stressful. I

:03:22. > :03:24.can't imagine what Becky must be feeling. Happy now she has got

:03:25. > :03:29.through to the semifinals. Can you believe we are here? A silver medal

:03:30. > :03:35.and another one possibly on the way? It is unbelievable she has got to

:03:36. > :03:39.where she is. It just shows the work ethic she has got and the commitment

:03:40. > :03:43.and dedication. And the love for the sport. If she didn't have the love,

:03:44. > :03:49.she could have walked away from it. She absolutely loves it. How close

:03:50. > :03:53.was she from doing that a few years ago? Very close. Just with the

:03:54. > :04:01.support of British cycling and everybody around her, it has kept

:04:02. > :04:04.her motivated. She has stuck with it and that is down to her. And for

:04:05. > :04:12.those back home who followed her career throughout, July of seeing

:04:13. > :04:20.this recent success. She joined the cycling club and had been identified

:04:21. > :04:27.as a talent in a school session. I don't think anybody appreciated how

:04:28. > :04:34.good she was going to call on to become. Tonight she will be tested.

:04:35. > :04:42.She goes against an opponent from the Netherlands who has previously

:04:43. > :04:47.won gold. She can keep going for a long time. But she hasn't got the

:04:48. > :04:51.same top acceleration. She needs to place your strength. She needs to

:04:52. > :04:56.make sure she is not caught in a long drag race. It will be a tough

:04:57. > :05:03.ask, but Becky James has already shown she is one determined

:05:04. > :05:10.competitor. Here is the all-important timetable for you back

:05:11. > :05:15.home. Semifinal at 8pm. Three straight head-to-head is. If

:05:16. > :05:31.successful, she will go for gold at around 9:45pm. A very frustrating

:05:32. > :05:42.day for Hannah Mills. But after eight places, things are looking

:05:43. > :05:49.and our reporter is there for us. at Cardiff Bay yacht club

:05:50. > :05:51.Not quite Copacabana beach, but it is lovely

:05:52. > :05:56.Cardiff Bay barrage that way, Bristol Channel over there.

:05:57. > :05:59.This is where Sailor Hannah Mills - who's from Dinas Powys -

:06:00. > :06:03.Having won silver four years ago, she is aiming - with her

:06:04. > :06:08.partner Saskia Clark - to become Olympic Champions.

:06:09. > :06:12.The good news - they're leading the 4-70 class.

:06:13. > :06:15.The finals are tomorrow, but they could clinch gold later

:06:16. > :06:30.Venturing out where an Olympian once sailed. Thousands of miles from Rio,

:06:31. > :06:34.they're hoping to emulate the biggest name in Welsh sailing. I

:06:35. > :06:41.think she will do well. She has done well so far. I think she will win

:06:42. > :06:46.gold. It can be scary at high speed with loads of wind. Sometimes a bit

:06:47. > :06:52.of your boat goes in the air and you're told to hike out. That can be

:06:53. > :06:56.scary. This week, people here are being given a chance to try sailing

:06:57. > :07:00.for the first time. The Royal Yachting Association will be easier

:07:01. > :07:11.talent spotting. The aim is to honour the next Olympian. But

:07:12. > :07:14.attracting more to sailing may be a challenge. The sport is not the

:07:15. > :07:17.easiest to follow. If you want to do athletics, you just need to run fast

:07:18. > :07:23.in a line. But with this, every day in the water is different. Different

:07:24. > :07:30.circumstances and conditions. There are more girl sailors than the boys

:07:31. > :07:37.at the moment. It is a great sport for girls to get into. And a role

:07:38. > :07:41.model like Hannah Mills helps? Definitely! Hannah Mills started out

:07:42. > :07:50.on a family holiday aged seven. Before long, talent was clear.

:07:51. > :07:52.British champion at just 13. Destined for greater things. There

:07:53. > :08:04.was a silver medal at the London Olympics. At Rio yesterday, the race

:08:05. > :08:10.was postponed due to wind. Weather conditions can be a challenge. The

:08:11. > :08:17.wind and the tights challenges are big. You can have a tough day here.

:08:18. > :08:21.From that respect, it is challenging. From a visual

:08:22. > :08:27.perspective, it is stunning. You can see the mountains and Sugarloaf

:08:28. > :08:33.Mountain. Back home, people are getting ready to witness a local

:08:34. > :08:39.girl competing on a big stage. A lifetime achievement could be

:08:40. > :08:42.realised. Called Olympic medal within reach.

:08:43. > :08:44.So, three races today for Hannah Mills.

:08:45. > :08:46.The next race starts in the next couple of minutes -

:08:47. > :08:48.before the day's last race at 8pm this evening.

:08:49. > :08:50.Coverage on the red button and online.

:08:51. > :08:53.After that - switch over to BBC One Wales for the women's

:08:54. > :09:01.Win that and Becky James will race for gold -

:09:02. > :09:09.Don't move from the TV tonight - history could be made in Rio.

:09:10. > :09:11.Welsh athletes could win a record 8th, possibly 9th medal.

:09:12. > :09:14.The rest of today's news now - and North Wales Fire

:09:15. > :09:17.and Rescue Services say the blaze in which an elderly couple died

:09:18. > :09:19.this morning is thought to have been electrical.

:09:20. > :09:22.Crews were called to the fire in Deganwy this morning.

:09:23. > :09:26.A man and a woman were brought out of the property on this private

:09:27. > :09:28.road, but later died - another woman managed to get out

:09:29. > :09:48.We mobilised appliances from Colwyn Bay. Once they arrived on the scene,

:09:49. > :09:52.we went into the property when rediscovered two casualties. They

:09:53. > :09:54.were removed from the premises. And fortunately we were not in a

:09:55. > :10:01.position to help them. People with Multiple Sclerosis

:10:02. > :10:03.in Wales have worse access to treatment than in any other part

:10:04. > :10:06.of the UK - that's according A survey found that 49% of patients

:10:07. > :10:10.with the disease here felt they couldn't access a modifying

:10:11. > :10:13.therapy to help manage the incurable condition that affects

:10:14. > :10:14.the nervous system. The Welsh Government says it accepts

:10:15. > :10:19.improvements are needed. One person has been airlifted

:10:20. > :10:21.to hospital after being pulled from the water

:10:22. > :10:23.near Porthcawl this afternoon. Coastguards were called

:10:24. > :10:25.to Rest Bay at half past three, and the person was airlifted

:10:26. > :10:28.to Morriston Hospital in Swansea. It comes as a safety warning has

:10:29. > :10:31.been issued after 13 children were reported missing on Welsh

:10:32. > :10:33.beaches in the past 48 hours. All were found safe and well

:10:34. > :10:36.but coastguards have increased their patrols in case

:10:37. > :10:52.of further emergencies. In Rhyl in particular, we have

:10:53. > :11:01.sandbanks wrapped round water and mud patches. Keep an eye on all your

:11:02. > :11:08.family. You can take children to a beach hut where you can get a

:11:09. > :11:11.wristband for emergency contact. If they get lost, we can contact adults

:11:12. > :11:15.through that means. Over the last decade

:11:16. > :11:17.the Welsh Blood Service has seen a 34% drop in the number

:11:18. > :11:19.of people donating blood. But there are calls tonight

:11:20. > :11:22.for changes to the criteria, which would allow more potential

:11:23. > :11:24.donors to come forward. At the moment gay men

:11:25. > :11:26.who are sexually active aren't allowed to give blood -

:11:27. > :11:28.the equality charity, Stonewall Cymru, says that's

:11:29. > :11:30.unfair and inconsistent. The Welsh Government says it's

:11:31. > :11:32.following medical advice. To resupply Welsh hospitals

:11:33. > :11:41.the blood service needs 450 people to come forward every day

:11:42. > :11:45.and there's a shortage of donors. But safety guidelines prevent some

:11:46. > :11:49.groups from giving blood. Men are currently excluded

:11:50. > :11:52.from donating blood for 12 months Those guidelines were introduced

:11:53. > :11:59.in 2011 but some campaigners say they're now out of date

:12:00. > :12:04.and need rethinking, as they're simply unfair to gay

:12:05. > :12:16.and bisexual men. These are people who want to give

:12:17. > :12:21.blood and help save lives. So this is why this is a priority for us. It

:12:22. > :12:28.is why we are calling on the Welsh Government to review this and

:12:29. > :12:32.replace the system with something which is fear for everyone,

:12:33. > :12:34.regardless of sexual orientation. Blood donation is a devolved mater

:12:35. > :12:37.in Wales and the Welsh Government says its policy is to follow

:12:38. > :12:40.the recommendations of SABTO - the UK's advisory committee

:12:41. > :12:42.on the safety of blood, That committee of experts

:12:43. > :12:45.is currently reviewing just who can As it stands, there are other

:12:46. > :12:49.potential blood donors who face a similar 12 month ban -

:12:50. > :12:51.for example sex workers, patients who have injected drugs

:12:52. > :12:54.and people who have been sexually active in parts of the world

:12:55. > :12:58.where HIV and AIDS are common. They're all deemed to be

:12:59. > :13:04.high risk groups. And SABTO's recommendation for

:13:05. > :13:06.a 12 month exclusion period is because some viruses don't

:13:07. > :13:18.show up in the blood straight away. The so-called window period as the

:13:19. > :13:25.period between someone becoming infected with the blood borne virus

:13:26. > :13:34.and the infection appearing. That can take weeks or months. The aim of

:13:35. > :13:35.that was that there are not missing din agents which are infected with

:13:36. > :13:39.in that window period. But for the LGBT community,

:13:40. > :13:44.it remains a highly emotive issue. We could end in Wales the ban on gay

:13:45. > :13:52.men giving blood. Earlier this summer,

:13:53. > :13:54.Plaid Cymru AM Adam Price addressed crowds who'd assembled at the Senedd

:13:55. > :13:57.in the wake of the shootings Then, as now, he believes Wales

:13:58. > :14:01.should lead the way and challenge the restrictions on sexually-active

:14:02. > :14:06.gay men giving blood. That decision could be made now and

:14:07. > :14:11.that would have an immediate effect on the amount of blood available for

:14:12. > :14:20.the Welsh blood transfusion service at a time when they are seeing 41%

:14:21. > :14:24.cut in the number of new donors. We could have new donors by getting rid

:14:25. > :14:28.The Welsh Government says it's awaiting SABTO's review of blood

:14:29. > :14:32.In the meantime, the Welsh blood service says it still desperately

:14:33. > :14:37.needs new donors to come forward to give blood and change lives.

:14:38. > :14:40.Still to come on the programme: More Welsh mothers like Soriah

:14:41. > :14:42.are choosing to breastfeed, but bottle feeding is still more

:14:43. > :14:50.And Cardiff was the warmest place in the UK yesterday.

:14:51. > :14:54.The hottest day of the month so far for most of Wales.

:14:55. > :15:08.But there is a big change on the way.

:15:09. > :15:10.Senior figures in the tourism industry have said north Wales needs

:15:11. > :15:14.to improve the basics it offers visitors if it wants them to return.

:15:15. > :15:16.They claim dirty streets, poor amenities and a lack of public

:15:17. > :15:20.But local councils say they're doing their best on limited budgets.

:15:21. > :15:36.The medieval town of Conway. Thousands of visitors come here each

:15:37. > :15:43.year to explore the historic castle and town centre. Odds are concerned

:15:44. > :15:47.there may be a less pleasant side to people stay out. You look at the

:15:48. > :15:53.state of the Ben and the flaps, it's not very hygienic. Businesses in the

:15:54. > :15:59.town are worried that weans -- weeds, rubbish bins and bad toilets

:16:00. > :16:04.will give visitors a bad experience. We want people to come to the town

:16:05. > :16:09.and return to the town. If they have a good experience, they will talk

:16:10. > :16:16.about it and they will come back to rejoin us. He is not the only one

:16:17. > :16:23.concern. Hoteliers nearby in one double stay clean streets and better

:16:24. > :16:36.public toilets are essential when tourism creates thousands of jobs.

:16:37. > :16:47.We are constantly looking to prioritise areas where we can

:16:48. > :16:51.improve. Experts talk about these issues as destination management.

:16:52. > :16:56.Plenty here believe more needs to be done. Local councils set comes down

:16:57. > :17:02.to one thing, money. In Gwyneth, the council is currently trying to cut

:17:03. > :17:05.?4.4 million worth of services. It means public toilets and tourist

:17:06. > :17:11.information services are under threat. A similar picture elsewhere

:17:12. > :17:22.in Wales. There is a lot of pressure on public sector budgets in this

:17:23. > :17:24.moment in time. And hotspot destinations need to make sure they

:17:25. > :17:27.are not forgotten about. Gridded council says it will not forget how

:17:28. > :17:31.important tourism is. It says they are looking at other ways to keep

:17:32. > :17:39.tourist information centres and toilets open. The ECB will continue

:17:40. > :17:41.to invest in this important industry.

:17:42. > :17:44.Abergavenny Cattle market moved from its site in the town's

:17:45. > :17:47.The Morrisons supermarket chain was due to pay

:17:48. > :17:49.?15 million for the site - but missed the deadline

:17:50. > :17:52.Monmouthshire Council has assured the county's taxpayers

:17:53. > :17:55.that they won't lose out even though the supermarket is now

:17:56. > :18:06.Thousands fought to keep scenes like this in Abergavenny. Bodley lost

:18:07. > :18:12.that fight. The former livestock market has looked like this for more

:18:13. > :18:18.than two years now. The replacement Mark is ten miles away. More trade

:18:19. > :18:24.is done here than before, in a ?5 million custom-built welding.

:18:25. > :18:27.Farming unions are happy, but others are not. Brand colours of Morrison's

:18:28. > :18:32.supermarket can be seen at the old site. What isn't here yet is the ?15

:18:33. > :18:41.million the company has contracted to pay for this land. Payment

:18:42. > :18:44.deadline missed earlier this summer. This was an ideal opportunity for

:18:45. > :18:52.the Council to say they wanted to rethink the position. A lot has

:18:53. > :18:56.happened. There has been the financial crash and Brexit. It is

:18:57. > :19:02.time to sit down and we think, what would be best for the Council and

:19:03. > :19:08.Abergavenny. This man and others have campaigned against moving the

:19:09. > :19:13.cattle mart. They have also said that a supermarket on the site would

:19:14. > :19:17.ruin independent shops. The council says that if they allow a

:19:18. > :19:22.supermarket to be built inside the town centre, there is less chance of

:19:23. > :19:27.one being built outside the city centre. They say the army gay sheep

:19:28. > :19:33.-- negotiating small changes to the plans for the site, but they still

:19:34. > :19:42.expect to get ?15 million from Morrison's for the town centre and

:19:43. > :19:47.schools. What we want to avoid at all costs was a supermarket being

:19:48. > :19:52.established out of town, because then the town would most certainly

:19:53. > :19:56.die in the future. And historic site, plans still on the drawing

:19:57. > :20:00.board. Some months yet before it could start to blend in with its

:20:01. > :20:03.surroundings again. There's been a rise in the number

:20:04. > :20:06.of women breastfeeding in Wales over the last decade -

:20:07. > :20:08.according to the latest figures. But the numbers remain consistently

:20:09. > :20:11.low in some of Wales's poorest communities - where it's

:20:12. > :20:13.white women in particular who are being targeted with support,

:20:14. > :20:15.to encourage them to Harper is developing really well -

:20:16. > :20:21.which mum Soraya puts down to the fact she was able

:20:22. > :20:24.to breastfeed her for four months. It's something she's really proud

:20:25. > :20:27.of, after having difficulties breastfeeding her older daughter

:20:28. > :20:29.Ayver, who's now nearly seven. She lives in Caerau, in Cardiff -

:20:30. > :20:39.where she says it just isn't I haven't seen anybody breast-feeds,

:20:40. > :20:46.if I'm honest. I don't know anyone who has breast-fed. It is not normal

:20:47. > :20:49.to see. It is just easier to get a bottle.

:20:50. > :20:52.What made the difference was being part of a Cardiff University

:20:53. > :20:54.project, which paired her up with a peer supporter -

:20:55. > :21:03.She explained about the underwear and blankets. I didn't know this

:21:04. > :21:11.stuff existed. I bought a bra that clipped off. I bought one of those.

:21:12. > :21:13.These figures from the Welsh Government suggest that

:21:14. > :21:15.over the last ten years, there's certainly been an increase

:21:16. > :21:17.in the number of women opting to breast feed.

:21:18. > :21:20.But they're more a snapshot of what mums opt to do

:21:21. > :21:22.in the first few days after their babies are born -

:21:23. > :21:25.they don't tell us how long they continue to breastfeed

:21:26. > :21:28.for example, or go into the reasons why - for many - it

:21:29. > :21:32.But it is the more socially deprived areas like Blaenau Gwent,

:21:33. > :21:34.Merthyr, and Wrexham, where the numbers of women not

:21:35. > :21:36.breastfeeding, are higher than the numbers who are.

:21:37. > :21:38.Janine Wyn Davies has worked in midwifery for over 20 years -

:21:39. > :21:42.and says the reasons are complex - the mum's education plays into it,

:21:43. > :21:44.positive examples in the community and even a perception that formula

:21:45. > :21:53.The length of stay in a hospital where women have their babies is

:21:54. > :21:58.getting shorter and shorter. In fairness to hospitals and maternity

:21:59. > :22:04.units, they are mostly signed up to our baby friendly status, which

:22:05. > :22:08.means absolute focus on encouraging women to breast-feed. The figures

:22:09. > :22:14.are going up across all social backgrounds. But once they get home,

:22:15. > :22:18.without that support, then the problems occur.

:22:19. > :22:20.Soraya can't speak highly enough about the support she had -
