:00:00. > :00:00.Our main story: The Brownlee brothers have won gold and silver in

:00:00. > :00:00.the triathlon, with Alistair beating his brother

:00:07. > :00:14.There's no change in the overall pass rate but the Education Minister

:00:15. > :00:16.says she's concerned that the numbers getting

:00:17. > :00:30.We want to see continued improvement year-on-year and this shop is

:00:31. > :00:33.something we will need to look at. As an opencast mine in Powys

:00:34. > :00:36.is moth-balled with the loss of 75 jobs, we'll look at

:00:37. > :00:38.the future for the industry. In tonight's sport:

:00:39. > :00:39.Hannah Mills finally Now all eyes turn to

:00:40. > :00:56.Jade Jones this evening. Jade Jones is preparing for her

:00:57. > :00:59.quarterfinal bout. Can she defend her title and win gold once again?

:01:00. > :01:02.And remembering the spitfire pilot who penned a world-famous

:01:03. > :01:22.Thousands of students in Wales are considering their future

:01:23. > :01:27.The overall pass rate is the same as last year -

:01:28. > :01:29.97.3% of Welsh students got A-star to E grades.

:01:30. > :01:33.But the number getting the highest A star and A grades

:01:34. > :01:41.A small drop, but the lowest it's been since A-stars

:01:42. > :01:55.Our education correspondent Bethan Lewis reports.

:01:56. > :02:03.After weeks of apprehension the results are in. It was a similar

:02:04. > :02:09.scene in schools and colleges across Wales this morning. The some of the

:02:10. > :02:13.letters made happier reading than others. Students in Bridgend, Colwyn

:02:14. > :02:19.Bay and Aberystwyth were amongst those getting the results. I'm going

:02:20. > :02:26.to Exeter. I needed three A 's. I am really happy. Relieved more than

:02:27. > :02:32.anything. B, C, D and any. It's what I expected. I got three season which

:02:33. > :02:41.I am quite happy with and I'm going to study in Staffordshire. I am over

:02:42. > :02:45.the moon. Not everyone will get the grades and the message for those who

:02:46. > :02:50.are disappointed is not to panic and consider the other options

:02:51. > :02:54.available. Those getting results at this school near Bridgend were

:02:55. > :02:57.joined by Education Secretary Kirsty Williams. Her job will be to look at

:02:58. > :03:01.the results and work out what the government can do to boost

:03:02. > :03:06.performance for everyone. Over the weeks to come we will be looking

:03:07. > :03:10.carefully across all subjects and all centres that have had students

:03:11. > :03:13.sitting exams to look to see what the Welsh Government can do and what

:03:14. > :03:18.schools can do to make sure we are on it to victory of improving the

:03:19. > :03:21.highest pass rate in years to come. The positives for the Welsh

:03:22. > :03:25.Government will be the good performance in maths where Wales

:03:26. > :03:29.gets a higher percentage of top grades than England. Winning this

:03:30. > :03:32.language it is less positive. They may take a look at the drop in

:03:33. > :03:39.numbers taking foreign-language is an Welsh. These are long-standing

:03:40. > :03:41.trends for the languages. One of the concerns is whether we are seeing

:03:42. > :03:46.reduced opportunities to study languages. If there are fewer

:03:47. > :03:53.schools offering land which is it becomes more of a spiral downwards.

:03:54. > :03:56.As well as A-level results, a S results and baccalaureate results

:03:57. > :04:01.were out and up on last year. With only a few envelopes left both

:04:02. > :04:06.students know what grades they have got under looking ahead. But for

:04:07. > :04:11.those concerned with the all Wales picture the drop in top grades will

:04:12. > :04:14.be of concern. As well as that stubborn gap between performance in

:04:15. > :04:19.Wales and the rest of the UK. As in Wales the overall pass rate state

:04:20. > :04:24.the same across the UK. The percentage of top grades was

:04:25. > :04:28.slightly down. While many would argue that comparing with some

:04:29. > :04:33.similar English regions is fairer only the north-east had a lower

:04:34. > :04:39.percentage of top grades. His shoes for the politicians and policymakers

:04:40. > :04:41.but for students the focus now is on the next step.

:04:42. > :04:44.Bethan is at the University of South Wales in Treforest this evening.

:04:45. > :04:46.Bethan, how concerned should we be by the fall in the number

:04:47. > :04:59.We are not talking here about huge percentage drops and you could see

:05:00. > :05:03.it as part of the ups and downs you get over the years but it is of

:05:04. > :05:06.concern and the Welsh Government will see it as a concern because

:05:07. > :05:10.they have talked about in improving system and it is nothing to address

:05:11. > :05:15.the gap that exists in performance between Wales and other parts of the

:05:16. > :05:19.UK. It has been a busy morning in loss of schools across Wales and its

:05:20. > :05:23.still busy here at the clearing centre at the University of South

:05:24. > :05:31.Wales. Helen like Dennis the Deputy Vice Chancellor. How important is

:05:32. > :05:35.clearing for you? Clearing is important for all universities.

:05:36. > :05:39.Every university in Wales is in clearing and every university in the

:05:40. > :05:43.UK is in clearing. It is big business at hundreds of courses and

:05:44. > :05:48.lots of opportunities. We have been really busy and the phones have been

:05:49. > :05:54.ringing. You can ring until 7am tonight. You can go on Twitter and

:05:55. > :06:00.Facebook. It has been really busy time. And lots of competition

:06:01. > :06:03.between universities. There is some competition but it's about the right

:06:04. > :06:08.students choosing the right course at the right university for them.

:06:09. > :06:15.Joanne Harris from careers Wales. What are the other options? We

:06:16. > :06:21.advertise apprenticeships, there is Jobs Growth Wales vacancies. If

:06:22. > :06:24.somebody wants to give us a ring we can talk about gap years,

:06:25. > :06:28.internships, volunteering, alternative qualifications, distance

:06:29. > :06:33.learning or professional qualifications. Things like

:06:34. > :06:42.apprenticeships are a valuable now? Definitely. The important thing is

:06:43. > :06:49.is not to drag your feet and get out there and do your research. Thank

:06:50. > :06:52.you both. Some people still have big decisions to make but at least the

:06:53. > :06:55.nervous wait for those results is over.

:06:56. > :06:59.To the Olympics now and Kate Morgan is here with the very latest on how

:07:00. > :07:01.Welsh athletes are faring and Kate, has Hannah Mills got her hands

:07:02. > :07:06.Yes, finally, Wales' Hannah Mills has officially claimed a gold medal

:07:07. > :07:09.in the sailing after the 4-70 event was postponed yesterday

:07:10. > :07:13.She and her partner, Saskia Clarke, held a 20 point lead

:07:14. > :07:16.in the run up to the final, which they just needed

:07:17. > :07:26.A few moments ago, Hannah spoke to the BBC's Shirley Robertson.

:07:27. > :07:37.Finally we can say they are the 2016 Olympics champions. I cant believe

:07:38. > :07:43.its! It actually happened. It's the best feeling ever. Four years ago it

:07:44. > :07:49.was agonising watching you lose gold and walk away with silver. This

:07:50. > :07:54.moment now, does it make you forget about London? Right now, absolutely.

:07:55. > :08:00.We are so proud to have come back and we have worked so hard. It is

:08:01. > :08:08.all we have ever dreamt of. We are so proud. Thank you to everyone at

:08:09. > :08:12.home for all the support. I am sure they are cheering in Wales and Essex

:08:13. > :08:16.but a word about the partnership. You are so close in so anyways but

:08:17. > :08:20.to finally get the chance to stand on that top step. It's going to be

:08:21. > :08:25.so great. All eyes turn now to Jade Jones

:08:26. > :08:30.who won Taekwondo Gold at 2012. She's hoping to defend her title

:08:31. > :08:32.at the Olympic Park this evening. In a moment, we'll speak

:08:33. > :08:35.to Matthew Richards who's with her friends and family

:08:36. > :08:50.watching at home in Flint, Jade Jones has already been

:08:51. > :08:54.competing this morning. She is safely through to the last eight.

:08:55. > :09:03.She is now three boats away from gold. Earlier today I spoke to her

:09:04. > :09:08.grandfather who told me she seemed quite nervous this morning. For

:09:09. > :09:18.everybody else watching it was just a very convincing performance. The

:09:19. > :09:22.top seed seemed in top form today. A dominant display by Jade Jones and

:09:23. > :09:29.she is now safely through to the quarterfinals. It was just about how

:09:30. > :09:34.good that lady was. The aim is simply for this girl is to repeat

:09:35. > :09:37.the success of 2012 when the unknown 19-year-old became a shock win at

:09:38. > :09:44.the London games. I gave it everything I had and every time I

:09:45. > :09:54.was waking up it was for London and when I won it was unbelievable. I

:09:55. > :10:00.was a bit lost after it but now I am back on my feet again and hungry to

:10:01. > :10:04.win this next title. Thrown into the limelight she struggled with form in

:10:05. > :10:06.the aftermath of her Olympic win. There was disappointment that the

:10:07. > :10:11.World Championships the following year, a back injury frustrated her,

:10:12. > :10:18.but she admitted herself she had fallen out of love with the sport.

:10:19. > :10:23.But now she is firmly back at the top of her game and is favourite to

:10:24. > :10:27.top the podium tonight. And for grandad, the man who inspired her to

:10:28. > :10:33.take up the sport, once again it is a proud moment. There is a lot more

:10:34. > :10:40.pressure on her this time. In 2012 she was virtually unknown. Now

:10:41. > :10:47.everybody knows her. She is ranked world number one. Four years ago

:10:48. > :10:50.Jade Jones flung her helmet into the air in delight as she was crowned

:10:51. > :10:58.Olympic champion. Expect similar scenes if she retains the Crown in

:10:59. > :11:05.Rio. In just under an hour's time she will fight again and she is up

:11:06. > :11:10.against quite a tough competitor. A bronze medallist at the European

:11:11. > :11:15.Championships last year. But the feisty Flintshire Cup assures us she

:11:16. > :11:23.is hungry for more success and if she does get to that final tomorrow

:11:24. > :11:26.morning, so you better keep watching.

:11:27. > :11:29.Now you might remember the celebrations in Flint

:11:30. > :11:33.Crowds turned out in their thousands to cheer her home as she took

:11:34. > :11:35.an open top bus tour through the town.

:11:36. > :11:37.Well Flint is right behind her again this evening.

:11:38. > :11:47.Matthew Richards is with Jade's friends and family.

:11:48. > :11:56.There is no mistaking that Flint is her town. The leisure centre has

:11:57. > :12:00.been renamed after her and the gold postbox still stands proudly in the

:12:01. > :12:07.town centre. How are you feeling after seeing her today? It was the

:12:08. > :12:12.best I have seen her for years. She has got through. Onto the next one

:12:13. > :12:18.and I hope she goes through again. Is it nerve wracking? I cant explain

:12:19. > :12:26.it. You have made her promise to make sure you watch every game? Yes

:12:27. > :12:32.and we will see her if she gets to the final. It must be amazing to see

:12:33. > :12:37.so many people out there supporting. It's great to see everybody

:12:38. > :12:43.screaming for her. I wish you a good night tonight. You were one of her

:12:44. > :12:50.first teachers and you introduced a lot of youngsters here to taekwondo.

:12:51. > :12:53.What is so special about her? From the word go she showed promise and

:12:54. > :13:00.she started competing and there was no stopping her. She had a lot of

:13:01. > :13:05.support from the family. Some of this lot will hopefully be doing the

:13:06. > :13:13.same. Are these the people who have been inspired by you? Very much so.

:13:14. > :13:18.They have all seen Jade Jones. Just described her style. Why is the --

:13:19. > :13:25.is she so good? Fantastic focus. Amazing head kicks as you saw in the

:13:26. > :13:30.head -- in the fight earlier. Dedication and termination. Everyone

:13:31. > :13:33.is behind his ear. So Lucy, a long night ahead before

:13:34. > :13:36.we know if Jade can make history Her next bout is at 7.30pm, so stay

:13:37. > :13:47.tuned to the BBC's Olympic coverage. Hospital emergency departments

:13:48. > :13:49.are still failing to meet Welsh Government

:13:50. > :13:51.waiting time targets. Figures for July show just over 82%

:13:52. > :13:54.of patients waited less than four hours before being admitted,

:13:55. > :13:55.transferred or discharged. But fewer patients waited longer

:13:56. > :14:00.than the maximum 12 hours. The Welsh Government says it knows

:14:01. > :14:10.there's more work to be done. 75 jobs are to be lost at Nant Helen

:14:11. > :14:13.opencast mine in Powys. Its owners, Celtic Energy,

:14:14. > :14:15.say they're mothballing the mine for two years

:14:16. > :14:17.because Aberthaw Power Station in the Vale of Glamorgan

:14:18. > :14:36.is downgrading its operation It was work as usual for those at

:14:37. > :14:40.the Nant Helen site today. But shortly many will look for work

:14:41. > :14:44.elsewhere as the majority face redundancies with around 30 taking

:14:45. > :14:51.involuntary. We are working with Celtic energy and other employers

:14:52. > :14:55.specifically at Hinkley point, because they were require some

:14:56. > :15:00.construction workers. Aberthaw Power Station is powered by coal. 500,000

:15:01. > :15:05.tonnes of which comes from the Nant Helen site each year. Following the

:15:06. > :15:10.decision by the power stations on burn coal until April next year it

:15:11. > :15:14.has a big pact on its supplier. But the Chief Executive of Celtic energy

:15:15. > :15:18.believes Nant Helen can the operational again in the future.

:15:19. > :15:26.There is continuing domestic demand for coal. Obviously we are looking

:15:27. > :15:32.at markets overseas where it is economically viable. Nant Helen is

:15:33. > :15:36.not the first site in this area to be mothballed. In October last year

:15:37. > :15:39.Celtic energy took the same decision over its other site near Glyn Neath

:15:40. > :15:45.and other coal mines in the area have also suffered a similar fate.

:15:46. > :15:50.As coal mining in south Wales continues its long decline. Some may

:15:51. > :15:51.be struggling but other opencast sites in Wales continue their

:15:52. > :15:57.operations despite opposition from some corners. This was the scene at

:15:58. > :16:04.force of rant in May as protesters tried to halt operations. It

:16:05. > :16:09.reflects the continuous change in attitudes towards the use of coal.

:16:10. > :16:12.We are seeing the final days of the coal industry in Wales and we need

:16:13. > :16:16.to prepare for new jobs in these communities and for a cleaner

:16:17. > :16:22.future. However others believe they can be a future for coal. Back in

:16:23. > :16:27.the 1970s we were talking about clean coal technology then. We never

:16:28. > :16:32.invested in it but it's never too late. We should be looking at it

:16:33. > :16:38.seriously. I am a big supporter of renewable energy. I am not so keen

:16:39. > :16:45.on nuclear. I think that is a role for coal. For now uncertainty

:16:46. > :16:47.remains as to whether coal extraction in Wales will be soon

:16:48. > :16:49.stopped for good. Still to come in the programme:

:16:50. > :16:52.After a worldwide search to run a million pound farm for just

:16:53. > :16:55.a pound in rent, And the aviation poem still quoted

:16:56. > :17:08.by pilots 75 years after it was More than 400,000 people

:17:09. > :17:23.travelled to see live music performances in Wales last year,

:17:24. > :17:24.double the number Big concerts like One Direction

:17:25. > :17:31.in Cardiff helped, as did the rise of festivals like Greenman

:17:32. > :17:35.in the Brecon Beacons. Paul Heaney reports

:17:36. > :17:37.on an industry now worth Part of an industry

:17:38. > :17:45.that's on the rise. Organisers of the Greenman Festival

:17:46. > :17:48.sold tickets to allow people to camp here for the days before the main

:17:49. > :17:50.stage opened this morning. The hope is they spend many

:17:51. > :17:58.with local businesses. We spend money in Crickhowell

:17:59. > :18:01.and buy goods and bits and pieces. We also have a butcher that comes

:18:02. > :18:05.in and we have bought bits and pieces from him and today

:18:06. > :18:08.we have just been up onto the canal Have you been out

:18:09. > :18:15.and about in the area? We have done things like that

:18:16. > :18:20.previous years but this year we have Fans like this who travel more

:18:21. > :18:24.than 37 miles to a performance The group which lobbies

:18:25. > :18:28.for the industry, UK Music, says there were 400,000

:18:29. > :18:30.of them in Wales last year, A small part though of a ?2 billion

:18:31. > :18:40.tourist industry in Wales. Cardiff accounts for most

:18:41. > :18:42.of that music related cash. Sell-out concerts by Beyonce,

:18:43. > :18:51.One Direction and others. I definitely think it

:18:52. > :18:54.is a growing industry. We encourage people to come and try

:18:55. > :18:57.new things and taste new things. Highlighting the integration

:18:58. > :18:59.of the tourism industry with the food and agricultural

:19:00. > :19:01.producers of an area. All that is where there

:19:02. > :19:06.are real elements to play. Back in the Brecon Beacons local

:19:07. > :19:09.pubs tell me they are We have a bit of noise and a bit

:19:10. > :19:14.of extra traffic but everybody grins If it's a bit wet we do a bit

:19:15. > :19:23.of business as well. But the activity-based businesses

:19:24. > :19:25.further afield have a Perhaps people are not quite aware

:19:26. > :19:29.of it all yet maybe, but I haven't noticed any increase

:19:30. > :19:32.in business at all yet. Many of the suppliers

:19:33. > :19:34.to the festival are local. This one providing the beer

:19:35. > :19:41.for 25,000 people. We will expand our

:19:42. > :19:46.business based on this. Still a small part of the tourist

:19:47. > :19:49.industry, the value of changing people's perception of Wales

:19:50. > :19:57.and its industries, harder to count. Now when we brought you news

:19:58. > :20:00.of the offer back in May it probably A million pound farm up for grabs

:20:01. > :20:06.for rent of just one pound a year. It was for Parc Farm

:20:07. > :20:08.on the Great Orme near Llandudno Not surprisingly hundreds applied,

:20:09. > :20:15.and now the new tenant Dan, Kerry and Evan Jones and a view

:20:16. > :20:27.of what will soon be their new home. They will pick up the keys

:20:28. > :20:30.at the end of next month. Tucked in behind the Great Orme

:20:31. > :20:33.summit, Park Farm is a special place and of course there is a catch

:20:34. > :20:37.in the ?1 a year rent. It will have to be managed in a way

:20:38. > :20:41.that puts nature first. There are some typical areas

:20:42. > :20:50.here that have not been grazed oenough and some areas that have

:20:51. > :20:54.been grazed too much so that is something we will look

:20:55. > :20:58.at and try to improve. There is a 10-year plan to reverse

:20:59. > :21:03.a decline in flora and fauna. If I'm honest, if it wasn't

:21:04. > :21:06.?1 a year, I probably The ?1 rent a year enables us to use

:21:07. > :21:12.the livestock as conservation grazing tools rather than primarily

:21:13. > :21:20.for profitable farming production. The ?1 rent allows us

:21:21. > :21:24.to do that so we can From breeding pairs of chough

:21:25. > :21:30.to razorbills, the Joneses will share the Great Orme

:21:31. > :21:34.with a range of wildlife. And then there are the

:21:35. > :21:37.two legged visitors. This shepherd's life

:21:38. > :21:43.will be far from lonely. With the farm there are grazing

:21:44. > :21:46.rights for outside the walls of the farm so that is one

:21:47. > :21:50.of the main roles I will have. We want to get more people to come

:21:51. > :21:58.out and enjoy the Orme and explore more of the Great Orme and the park

:21:59. > :22:01.itself and we are aiming to educate people in what we're doing and why

:22:02. > :22:06.we're doing it and showing them that conservation and modern-day farming

:22:07. > :22:10.can hopefully work together. Wildlife, tourists and a measure

:22:11. > :22:14.of hard work. A new home for the family

:22:15. > :22:22.but for Evan, a new school as well. It's been quoted by presidents,

:22:23. > :22:25.actors, even astronauts. High Flight is an aviation poem,

:22:26. > :22:29.written by an American spitfire pilot 75 years ago today, at RAF

:22:30. > :22:33.Llandow in the Vale of Glamorgan. The poem, by John Gillespie Magee

:22:34. > :22:37.Junior, is a favourite with aviators all over the world and today

:22:38. > :22:58.a service was held at RAF St Athan I have slept the bonds of earth and

:22:59. > :23:06.dance the skies on laughter Silver wings. I have climbed and joined the

:23:07. > :23:13.clouds and at an you have not trained. The words of John Gillespie

:23:14. > :23:17.Magee Junior, unknown -- and is known by aviators around the world.

:23:18. > :23:22.His poem is often read at military funerals and was quoted by President

:23:23. > :23:25.Reagan after the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986 in which

:23:26. > :23:30.all seven crew members died. We will never forget them nor the last time

:23:31. > :23:37.we saw them this morning as they prepared for their journey and waved

:23:38. > :23:42.goodbye and slipped to the surly bonds of earth to touch the face of

:23:43. > :23:46.God. Those final words of the sonnet to touch the face of God came to the

:23:47. > :23:51.19-year-old pilot when he was in spit fire training high above RAF

:23:52. > :23:54.landau on this day in 1941. He finished the poem on landing and

:23:55. > :24:00.sent it to his parents in Washington. Just a few months later

:24:01. > :24:05.he died in a flying accident over Lincolnshire. Today his younger

:24:06. > :24:11.brother, now in its early 90s, read the poem at the commemoration

:24:12. > :24:18.service. All I have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the

:24:19. > :24:22.skies on laughter Silver wings. One reason the poem as had such an

:24:23. > :24:26.appeal is it could only have been written by a pilot because he talks

:24:27. > :24:35.about things people would not be able to talk about if they had not

:24:36. > :24:40.flown. It has meant so much to so many people have been pilots or

:24:41. > :24:45.astronauts. It was also recited in several countries around the world

:24:46. > :24:54.today, including China, Australia, Canada and the US. In America his

:24:55. > :24:58.biographer has recited it for us in front of his parents house. It was

:24:59. > :25:09.where they received the poem for the first time. John Gillespie Magee

:25:10. > :25:10.Junior's family will hope the poem comforts all those who takes to the

:25:11. > :25:12.sky. Talking of the skies,

:25:13. > :25:14.Derek's here with the weather. It's relatively calm at the moment

:25:15. > :25:18.but we're in for a big change with some bumpy flying conditions

:25:19. > :25:20.on the way. This mass of cloud over the Atlantic

:25:21. > :25:23.is going to bring a taste Rain, heavy showers and strong

:25:24. > :25:27.to gale force winds. At the moment most

:25:28. > :25:31.places dry this evening. But rain will arrive

:25:32. > :25:37.during the early hours. The breeze picking-up

:25:38. > :25:41.in the south west. The rain heavy in places with

:25:42. > :25:48.a south to south easterly breeze. Brisk and gusty winds

:25:49. > :25:49.in Pembrokeshire. During the afternoon it will dry

:25:50. > :26:08.and brighten-up from the south. The sun will come out

:26:09. > :26:11.but with heavy showers by teatime Strong and gusty winds

:26:12. > :26:17.in the south west. In Flintshire tomorrow,

:26:18. > :26:22.rain and breezy. It should dry and brighten-up

:26:23. > :26:24.later in the afternoon. In Bridgend tomorrow,

:26:25. > :26:39.rain will clear. Tomorrow evening and overnight

:26:40. > :26:41.showers will spread across Wales. A breezy and windy night,

:26:42. > :26:44.especially on the coast. The chart for Saturday shows a deep

:26:45. > :26:47.low pressure over Northern Ireland. Not what you'd expect

:26:48. > :26:50.to see in August. There is a yellow warning of strong

:26:51. > :26:53.to gale force winds in the south and west

:26:54. > :26:57.with large waves on the coast. A few bright or sunny intervals

:26:58. > :27:03.but lots of heavy showers. Thunder possible and

:27:04. > :27:06.unseasonably windy. Gusts of 50mph to 60mph on exposed

:27:07. > :27:09.coasts in the south and west On Sunday the wind and showers

:27:10. > :27:17.will gradually ease. Dry and brighter for

:27:18. > :27:20.a while but more rain on the way. So some poor, disappointing weather

:27:21. > :27:24.this weekend but bigger waves We're back after the

:27:25. > :27:42.BBC News at 10:00pm. For now though, from all

:27:43. > :27:46.of us on the programme,
