0:00:06 > 0:00:08Welcome to Wales Today - our top stories: As many as 1000

0:00:08 > 0:00:11people turn out in Merthyr to see Jeremy Corbyn -

0:00:11 > 0:00:15will his message persuade Labour supporters to back him in Wales?

0:00:15 > 0:00:18And his country ripped apart by war - medical student Mohammed

0:00:18 > 0:00:22was studying in Syria - now Universities here want to help.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Good evening.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41He stepped onto the balcony of Merthyr Tydfil's Old Town Hall -

0:00:41 > 0:00:43to the cheers of hundreds of supporters.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Jeremy Corbyn - the Labour leader - was in town to launch the Welsh leg

0:00:47 > 0:00:50of his campaign to keep his job.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53His key pledge - that no community would ever be left behind

0:00:53 > 0:00:55under his leadership.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59Our reporter, Cemlyn Davies was there.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01This is how Jeremy Corbyn made his appearance

0:01:01 > 0:01:03in Merthyr today to the

0:01:03 > 0:01:08delight of hundreds of supporters who had gathered to see him.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Jeremy Corbyn and his team chose this

0:01:11 > 0:01:15location deliberately for today's event.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18The red house is where the

0:01:18 > 0:01:21party's first leader would address his constituents when he was the

0:01:21 > 0:01:24local MP at the start of the 20th century.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27This square was also the

0:01:27 > 0:01:31scene of the Merthyr rising in 1831 when

0:01:31 > 0:01:32the red flag, a symbol of the

0:01:32 > 0:01:34working class cause, is said to have been

0:01:34 > 0:01:37flown for the first time.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40But today was about the current fight

0:01:40 > 0:01:45within Labour and before he addressed his supporters, I asked

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Jeremy Corbyn what his message is for the party members who decide

0:01:47 > 0:01:51if he stays or goes.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Labour will be a party of investment, growing the

0:01:54 > 0:01:57economy, and leaving no community behind.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58We need investment across

0:01:58 > 0:02:02the entirety of the UK, including many parts of Wales that have

0:02:02 > 0:02:04suffered grievously ever since the end of

0:02:04 > 0:02:06the mining industry.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Owen Smith says you're going backwards if

0:02:10 > 0:02:13you look at some of the Assembly election results?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15In the Assembly election results we gained some

0:02:15 > 0:02:16seats as well as losing one.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Labour Party membership hasn't grown without a

0:02:18 > 0:02:20reason.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22People are coming into Labour because they see something of

0:02:22 > 0:02:24themselves in the party, the possibility of a party

0:02:24 > 0:02:27speaking for them.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30Yes, more people have joined Labour under Jeremy Corbyn, but

0:02:30 > 0:02:33despite his claims the party failed to win

0:02:33 > 0:02:34any new assembly seats in

0:02:34 > 0:02:37May, and these supporters are confident he can lead the party to

0:02:37 > 0:02:45success.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47Since the Blair thing, I haven't touched it,

0:02:47 > 0:02:48politics has just been one Tory

0:02:48 > 0:02:49thing after another.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52Now there is a man who we can get together behind.

0:02:52 > 0:02:53Can he win an election?

0:02:53 > 0:02:54Yes.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56This is a leadership contest, as we saw in

0:02:56 > 0:02:59last night's first head-to-head debate, when Smith said only he can

0:02:59 > 0:03:02get Labour back into power.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04I think I'm the person who has the ideas in

0:03:04 > 0:03:08this debate and I think I'm the person who has the energy and I

0:03:08 > 0:03:10think I see very clearly that we have not been

0:03:10 > 0:03:12what we need to be in

0:03:12 > 0:03:16recent months.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18In a blow to Mr Corbyn's campaign this evening, the

0:03:18 > 0:03:21main union at the Port Talbot steelworks community said it is

0:03:21 > 0:03:24supporting Owen Smith, however other major unions

0:03:24 > 0:03:28are expected to back the current leader.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30He and his supporters intend on keeping their

0:03:30 > 0:03:34flag flying.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38The front man of rock band Iron Maiden says -

0:03:38 > 0:03:42his Vale of Glamorgan aviation firm is losing millions of pounds worth

0:03:42 > 0:03:45of business because of a dispute with the MOD over landing rights.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Bruce Dickinson says -

0:03:47 > 0:03:50when he located at RAF St Athan he was assured by the Welsh

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Government they'd be able to use MOD technology to allow planes to take

0:03:53 > 0:03:59off and land day and night.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02There has been a long-term failure to provide the use of an instrument

0:04:02 > 0:04:10landing facility, which exists and was paid for by the taxpayer at vast

0:04:10 > 0:04:14expense and is used by the RAF.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17But they don't permit civil aircraft to

0:04:17 > 0:04:18use it.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21The Welsh Government says it'll discuss the issue with Mr Dickinson,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24and is lobbying the Ministry of Defence to ensure

0:04:24 > 0:04:25a "favourable outcome".

0:04:25 > 0:04:29The MOD has been asked to comment.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Some Welsh universities are considering offering

0:04:31 > 0:04:35scholarships to refugees who've fled here from war zones.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37The Syrian-Welsh society says - students who've been forced

0:04:37 > 0:04:40to flee their homeland face barriers when it comes to entering

0:04:40 > 0:04:43higher education.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47Carwyn Jones reports.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Daily life on the streets of Aleppo.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Syria's largest city has become a battle ground with civilians

0:04:53 > 0:04:55caught in the crossfire.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Many have simply left there lives behind and fled the

0:04:58 > 0:05:03city, seeking refuge and safety in other countries.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06One of those refugees is 21-year-old Mohammad

0:05:06 > 0:05:08Hadi Saleh, who arrived in Wales last year.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11At home he was a medical student and would like to continue

0:05:11 > 0:05:14his education at somewhere like the School of Medicine at Cardiff

0:05:14 > 0:05:16University.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19He was two years into his studies in Syria, but the war

0:05:19 > 0:05:21cut that short.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25It was very difficult for all the Syrians living in

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Aleppo, everything is destroyed, there is no water, no electricity.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34There is not anything for the means of life.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Cardiff University already offers financial support

0:05:38 > 0:05:42for asylum seekers,

0:05:42 > 0:05:44while Bangor University offers a scholarship scheme for

0:05:44 > 0:05:46international students.

0:05:46 > 0:05:47Now two further institutions in Wales say

0:05:47 > 0:05:50they want to do more to help refugees in particular who want to

0:05:50 > 0:05:51study here.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Aberystwyth hopes to offer five scholarships to refugees,

0:05:53 > 0:05:58the University of Wales Trinity Saint David

0:05:58 > 0:05:59said it was committed to a

0:05:59 > 0:06:00similar scheme.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Both institutions want to give refugees like any other

0:06:02 > 0:06:05students the chance to gain qualifications and skills.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08We'll be looking for potential students that

0:06:08 > 0:06:12would benefit from the opportunity and who could bring something to the

0:06:12 > 0:06:14University and potentially give something back to the UK once they

0:06:14 > 0:06:17complete their qualification.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19But universities here could be doing a

0:06:19 > 0:06:23lot more, according to Doctor Mohammed Al Hadj Ali, chair of the

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Syrian Welsh Society, and who is also a research fellow at Cardiff

0:06:26 > 0:06:27University.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Some universities do not accept refugees as a transfer from a

0:06:31 > 0:06:34university in Syria to a university in the UK.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37It is one of the major problems.

0:06:37 > 0:06:42Mohammed still hopes to find a university in Wales that will

0:06:42 > 0:06:44allow him to complete his medical degree.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47One year after he was forced to abandon his education and flee to

0:06:47 > 0:06:50safety.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Every home in Caerphilly county is to be visited

0:06:52 > 0:06:54by a council official - to ensure they're recycling

0:06:54 > 0:06:56their food waste properly.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59Recycling advisors hope to call in on nearly eighty thousand

0:06:59 > 0:07:04properties in coming weeks.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06The council says - it could save nearly ?200,000

0:07:06 > 0:07:11a year - if everyone recycled waste.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Football, and Swansea City have completed the signing of striker

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Fernando Llorente from Sevilla, for an undisclosed fee.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21The 31 year old Spanish World Cup and European Championship winner has

0:07:21 > 0:07:26signed a two-year contract.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29A record number of Welsh athletes are preparing to take part

0:07:29 > 0:07:31in the 2016 Olympic Games - which gets underway

0:07:31 > 0:07:34in just over an hour.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Rehearsals have been taking place at Rio's Maracana stadium,

0:07:37 > 0:07:40where the Olympic cauldron will be lit at the opening ceremony.

0:07:40 > 0:07:4223 Welsh sportsmen and women are ready to compete

0:07:42 > 0:07:45across 11 sports.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48First in action - double olympic champion Geraint Thomas -

0:07:48 > 0:07:53who competes in the road race tomorrow.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Coverage of the opening ceremony begins here

0:07:56 > 0:08:00on BBC One Wales at 11.35pm tonight.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02Let's see what the weekend weather has in store -

0:08:02 > 0:08:03Derek has the forecast.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06Hello.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08I have some good news about the weekend.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12I can promise some fine and warm weather, but it is not

0:08:12 > 0:08:15all plain sailing, damper on Saturday and windy on

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Sunday.

0:08:18 > 0:08:25Tonight, dry with clear spells and patchy clouds.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30Tomorrow shows a ridge of high pressure over the UK, meaning a

0:08:30 > 0:08:32window of good weather, but this deep low

0:08:32 > 0:08:34will bring strong wind on

0:08:34 > 0:08:35Sunday.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Tomorrow morning looking dry with patchy cloud

0:08:37 > 0:08:38and otherwise bright

0:08:44 > 0:08:47for many places, sunny spells and warming up

0:08:47 > 0:08:50nicely, the exception is

0:08:50 > 0:08:53the far north and north-west of Scotland, some rain here in the

0:08:53 > 0:08:58afternoon with increasing wind.

0:08:58 > 0:09:04A lovely afternoon in Wales tomorrow,

0:09:04 > 0:09:09plenty of sunshine and dry, more like summer and warmer than today.

0:09:09 > 0:09:17It might cloud over in Pembrokeshire by evening.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20It will be a cracking day tomorrow for the last day in Abergavenny.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Dry tomorrow evening and dry start, but clouding over from

0:09:23 > 0:09:25the West and turning damp and misty overnight with low cloud.

0:09:25 > 0:09:29The wind

0:09:29 > 0:09:33picking up as well on Monday night into Sunday, damp and
