:00:32. > :00:36.Thousands of students in Wales are considering their future tonight

:00:37. > :00:40.The overall pass rate is the same as last year,

:00:41. > :00:44.but the number getting the highest A* and A grades is down by 0.4%.

:00:45. > :00:51.Our education correspondent, Bethan Lewis, reports.

:00:52. > :00:54.After years of work and weeks of apprehension the results are in.

:00:55. > :00:56.It was a similar scene in schools and colleges across

:00:57. > :01:05.For some, the letters on the page made happier reading

:01:06. > :01:09.Students in Bridgend and Aberystwyth were amongst those

:01:10. > :01:14.I needed three A's and I got A*, A and a B.

:01:15. > :01:21.That is what I expected so I'm happy with that.

:01:22. > :01:24.Not everyone will get the grades and the message for those

:01:25. > :01:27.who are disappointed is not to panic and consider

:01:28. > :01:34.Those getting results that this school near Bridgend were joined

:01:35. > :01:37.by the Education Secretary, Kirsty Williams.

:01:38. > :01:40.Her job will be to look at the results and work out

:01:41. > :01:44.what the government can do to boost performance for everyone.

:01:45. > :01:47.Over the weeks to come we will be looking very carefully

:01:48. > :01:50.across all subjects and all centres that have had students sitting exams

:01:51. > :01:53.to look to see what I can do and what the Welsh Government can do

:01:54. > :01:57.and what schools and colleges can do to make sure we are on a trajectory

:01:58. > :02:00.of improving the very highest pass rates in years to come.

:02:01. > :02:03.The positives for the Welsh Government will be the good

:02:04. > :02:06.performance in maths where Wales gets a higher percentage of top

:02:07. > :02:10.In English language though it is less positive.

:02:11. > :02:14.They may take a look at the drop in the numbers taking foreign

:02:15. > :02:19.As well as A-level results, AS and Welsh baccalaureate results

:02:20. > :02:26.With only a few envelopes left most students now know what grades

:02:27. > :02:31.But for those concerned with the all Wales picture,

:02:32. > :02:34.the drop in top grades will be of concern, as well as that stubborn

:02:35. > :02:37.gap between performance in Wales and the rest of the UK.

:02:38. > :02:41.As in Wales, the overall pass rate stayed the same across the UK.

:02:42. > :02:47.The percentage of top grades was slightly down but the Welsh

:02:48. > :02:51.figure is 3% lower and while many would argue that comparing with some

:02:52. > :02:54.similar English regions is fairer, only the north-east had a lower

:02:55. > :03:02.Issues for the politicians and policymakers but for

:03:03. > :03:08.the students the focus now is on the next step.

:03:09. > :03:10.BBC Wales understands police are investigating allegations

:03:11. > :03:13.of fraud against UKIP Wales MEP Nathan Gill.

:03:14. > :03:16.The claims relate to alleged use of European parliamentary funds

:03:17. > :03:19.for party political purposes, such as election campaigning.

:03:20. > :03:22.Mr Gill says he's not been contacted by police,

:03:23. > :03:30.he's not aware of the allegations and will not comment at this stage.

:03:31. > :03:33.75 jobs will be lost at Nant Helen opencast mine in Powys.

:04:46. > :04:48.In 2012 she was virtually unknown outside the taekwondo circles.

:04:49. > :04:53.Now everybody knows her and she is ranked number one

:04:54. > :05:00.After a 48 hour wait, finally the party has started

:05:04. > :05:13.All they had to do to win gold was finish today's final

:05:41. > :05:42.as they turned London 2012 silver into Rio 2016 gold.

:05:43. > :05:50.I am so pleased that they were able to turn their results around

:05:51. > :05:54.from London to get that gold medal position.

:05:55. > :05:57.They have worked incredibly hard for four years and they have had

:05:58. > :06:02.to sail out of their skins this week to get the results they have had.

:06:03. > :06:05.The headhunter from Flintshire is also no stranger to memorable

:06:06. > :06:10.Tonight she is now one step closer to recreating them
