:00:09. > :00:14.Welcome to all Wales today. Our headlines: The teacher from Swansea

:00:15. > :00:17.stopped from entering the US on a school trip. Tonight, still no

:00:18. > :00:21.explanation. And a jealous man who murdered his

:00:22. > :00:22.girlfriend after getting paranoid about her being unfaithful is jailed

:00:23. > :00:34.for life. A teacher from Swansea says

:00:35. > :00:37.he's still waiting for answers after he was removed from a flight

:00:38. > :00:42.to New York while on a school trip. 25-year-old Juhel Miah, who teaches

:00:43. > :00:46.at Llangatwg Community School in Neath, was flying from Reykjavik

:00:47. > :00:49.in Iceland to the United States when The First Minister Carwyn Jones has

:00:50. > :00:54.written to the Foreign Secretary asking him to pursue the matter

:00:55. > :01:14.urgently with US authorities. I can't believe this is happening.

:01:15. > :01:21.It's dreadful. Honestly, I feel like a criminal.

:01:22. > :01:24.The thoughts of Juhel Miah, recorded on his phone at the airport in recce

:01:25. > :01:28.you make after he was escorted off a plane with no explanation. It was

:01:29. > :01:34.supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime school trip, but having spent a few

:01:35. > :01:38.days in Iceland, Mr Miah was randomly selected for a security

:01:39. > :01:41.check at the airport before a flight to the US.

:01:42. > :01:44.They took me into a room with about five or six officials. I noticed

:01:45. > :01:50.that two of them were checking me, so one put me on a stool, I took my

:01:51. > :01:53.jacket and bag off. They checked me thoroughly, and then I had to take

:01:54. > :01:58.off my hoodie. I had a school hoodie on at the time, site about. They

:01:59. > :02:01.checked me, and took my shoes off. After they do that, they got a swab

:02:02. > :02:09.and rub it all over me. Having eventually boarded the flight

:02:10. > :02:15.for the Big Apple, it was in front of 39 pupils from the school that Mr

:02:16. > :02:17.Miah was confronted by a homeland security official and asked to leave

:02:18. > :02:23.the plane. I have just been kicked off the

:02:24. > :02:27.plane. Surprise, surprise. My bag is already off the plane. And now I am

:02:28. > :02:32.just waiting. This height pleading with officials as to why this was

:02:33. > :02:35.happening, Mr Miah received no clear answers.

:02:36. > :02:39.As soon as she said, I'm not allowed on the plane, and allowed access to

:02:40. > :02:43.New York I asked why? I explained I had my Visa in my bag and every

:02:44. > :02:46.document needed. They could not give me an explanation. I asked the

:02:47. > :02:50.question more than once they could not give me an explanation.

:02:51. > :02:54.After he was taken off the flight, Mr Miah then return to the UK the

:02:55. > :03:00.following day alone. He told me he has had no answers as to why he was

:03:01. > :03:03.removed from the flight to New York. Neath Port Talbot council says it

:03:04. > :03:08.has written to the US embassy to express its dismay at the treatment

:03:09. > :03:10.of Mr Miah. The incidents has even caught the attention of the First

:03:11. > :03:15.Minister. In a letter to Boris Johnson, Carwyn Jones urges the

:03:16. > :03:19.Foreign Secretary to pursue the matter is with the US authorities.

:03:20. > :03:23.In his letter, Mr Jones states their British passport holders should not

:03:24. > :03:38.be affected by the US government's travel ban, adding:

:03:39. > :03:45.Clearly, we have had Donald Trump's decision in the US about Muslims

:03:46. > :03:47.travelling into the US, and although that policy has been suspended, it

:03:48. > :03:52.seems to be pretty likely that this may be a consequence of that.

:03:53. > :03:55.But the US embassy in the White House have been asked to comment.

:03:56. > :04:00.Back at the school in Neath, Mr Miah says he would like to travel to the

:04:01. > :04:03.US one day, but for now, he continues to wait for answers as to

:04:04. > :04:05.why on this occasion he was treated differently to everyone else.

:04:06. > :04:07.A barman has been jailed for life for murdering his wealthy Chinese

:04:08. > :04:10.girlfriend who moved to Britain to improve her education.

:04:11. > :04:16.Cardiff Crown Court heard how 24-year-old Xixi Bi was killed

:04:17. > :04:18.by Jordan Matthews in a vicious and prolonged attack.

:04:19. > :04:22.Judge Nicola Davies said it was the "tragic culmination"

:04:23. > :04:25.of a course of physical and verbal abuse over a number of months.

:04:26. > :04:41.Clever, beautiful, and much loved by her family back in China, Xixi Bi

:04:42. > :04:45.was studying for a Masters degree in the Welsh capital. The 24-year-old

:04:46. > :04:49.had started a relationship with Barman Jordan Matthews. She showered

:04:50. > :04:54.him with gifts, bought him a car, and paid the rent in their flat in

:04:55. > :04:58.the city. But the relationship became abusive, and the court heard

:04:59. > :05:03.he regularly beaten until one attack in August last year resulted in a

:05:04. > :05:07.murder. The court heard Xixi suffered 41 injuries including

:05:08. > :05:10.broken ribs and a broken jaw. She also had healing fractures from

:05:11. > :05:15.alleged previous attacks. The court heard how a weapon similar to a

:05:16. > :05:19.steel rod was used. Tee's deficit is the latest case in an

:05:20. > :05:23.ever-increasing problem here. In the year ending March 2016, there were

:05:24. > :05:27.11 murders -- 18 murders resulting from domestic abuse in Wales. In

:05:28. > :05:31.total, thousands of incidents were recorded here, but just over 6000

:05:32. > :05:36.cases resulted in a prosecution. Across the UK, the British crime

:05:37. > :05:39.survey revealed 1.2 million women were victims of domestic abuse, but

:05:40. > :05:46.the vast majority did not contact the police. Prime Minister to Reza

:05:47. > :05:50.me has vowed to directly oversee the location telling creation of laws to

:05:51. > :05:52.deal with the problem. The government is creating Deloitte

:05:53. > :05:56.consulting experts to find out what should be included in any new act.

:05:57. > :06:00.We don't know yet what this act will be an whether it will have Wales

:06:01. > :06:04.within that. From our perspective, what we would like to see is a lot

:06:05. > :06:10.of work being done around preventing domestic abuse and sexual violence

:06:11. > :06:13.to begin with, so that would mean work in schools and the round

:06:14. > :06:16.education with young people and children, but also work in community

:06:17. > :06:21.to allow women to access support when and where they need it.

:06:22. > :06:24.In the case of Xixi Bi, there was evidence of previous attacks and

:06:25. > :06:28.hospital visits for months before she died. Matthews has pleaded

:06:29. > :06:31.guilty manslaughter, but the jury decided he had murdered his

:06:32. > :06:36.girlfriend. Sentencing Matthews to life, the judge Nick Davies told

:06:37. > :06:39.them, over a period of months, you regularly subjected her to abuse.

:06:40. > :06:44.The murder, she said, was the tragic, nation of physical and

:06:45. > :06:50.verbal conduct, gratuitous violence, to which she had no defence. She

:06:51. > :06:51.said he should serve a minimum of 18 years before being considered for

:06:52. > :06:54.parole. A couple from south Wales have been

:06:55. > :06:57.found murdered in South Africa. The bodies of Christine Solik,

:06:58. > :07:01.who was originally from Mountain Ash, and her husband Roger

:07:02. > :07:03.were found 50 miles Police in South Africa believe

:07:04. > :07:10.they were kidnapped from their home Labour has launched an investigation

:07:11. > :07:27.after complaints were made about the conduct of members

:07:28. > :07:30.involved in a row over changing Llangennech primary school

:07:31. > :07:32.to Welsh-medium education only. It's been suggested a Labour

:07:33. > :07:34.councillor shared social media material by the far-right group

:07:35. > :07:35.Britain First. Tegwen Devichand, who's

:07:36. > :07:37.Labour's deputy group leader at Carmarthenshire Council,

:07:38. > :07:39.says she doesn't remember A ?15 million discount

:07:40. > :07:45.travel scheme for young people that was axed

:07:46. > :07:47.by the Welsh Government Ministers had been criticised

:07:48. > :07:50.for scrapping My Travel Pass, which gives sixteen to eighteen year

:07:51. > :07:57.olds a third off bus travel. It will now continue

:07:58. > :07:59.beyond April until a new More TV dramas, comedy programmes

:08:00. > :08:06.and entertainment shows will be coming to your screen

:08:07. > :08:11.after the BBC announced it's increasing the amount it spends

:08:12. > :08:23.on its output in Wales The money will also be used

:08:24. > :08:27.to improve news services as well as its online

:08:28. > :08:29.and mobile services. But it falls short of

:08:30. > :08:31.the ?30 million extra that some politicians

:08:32. > :08:37.and lobbyists called for. I think it has been a long time

:08:38. > :08:42.coming. We welcome any investment, and we look forward to a 50%

:08:43. > :08:45.investment being spent here in Wales new programming. But we would say

:08:46. > :08:48.it's all sort of the ?30 million a year increase that we wanted to see.

:08:49. > :08:49.Test we would say it all sort. Fire officers say they hope

:08:50. > :08:52.the conviction of a former safety consultant who gave "valueless

:08:53. > :08:55.advice" will help bring in new rules An investigation into Brian Fakir

:08:56. > :08:58.began after fires at charity shops Today he was given a six-month

:08:59. > :09:02.suspended sentence for failing to carry out proper risk assessments

:09:03. > :09:22.at four other shops in South Wales. Fire crews were amazed no one was

:09:23. > :09:25.killed here at Pontypool and 2014. A charity shop gutted, flat above

:09:26. > :09:29.destroyed. Just months later, another Saint Davids Hospice shop

:09:30. > :09:34.was also destroyed by fire in nearby Newbridge. No one was prosecuted,

:09:35. > :09:45.but a wider investigation began. This is Brian Fakir. The charity

:09:46. > :09:47.paid him thousands to give fire risk assessment is that their shops. They

:09:48. > :09:54.relied on his assessment being full and frank, but they went. He failed

:09:55. > :09:57.in his duties 13. This was a shop here set in Aberdare. Escape route

:09:58. > :10:01.blocked, no appropriate fire alarm fitted. He didn't even record that

:10:02. > :10:04.this basement existed as part of the shop he assessed in Blackwood, never

:10:05. > :10:11.mind any other fire prevention measures. The judge handed Mr Fakir

:10:12. > :10:15.a six month suspended jail sentence and ordered that he complete 180

:10:16. > :10:18.hours' community service will stop he told them, your assessments

:10:19. > :10:23.failed to address the most obvious risks. It seems to me, he said, they

:10:24. > :10:26.were valueless. He'll so told the court it was jaw-dropping that

:10:27. > :10:29.anyone can set themselves up as a consultant and give fire safety

:10:30. > :10:36.advice without having any formal qualifications. The Fire Service

:10:37. > :10:38.hope this will help them in their campaign to change the rules.

:10:39. > :10:44.It is a vital piece of legislation. The skill sets and the experience

:10:45. > :10:47.required to identify the risks, and we are talking about potential loss

:10:48. > :10:51.of life and serious injury in the results of fire. We have to have

:10:52. > :10:55.people qualified and experienced to undertake that work.

:10:56. > :10:58.Saint David's Hospice has refurbished the shop and has also

:10:59. > :11:03.had to spend tens of thousands of pounds reassessing all its

:11:04. > :11:04.properties. The Fire Service is now urging other customers of Mr Fakir

:11:05. > :11:06.to get in touch. The sister of a Welsh fisherman

:11:07. > :11:09.who died in an accident on his boat is helping to lead a new campaign

:11:10. > :11:12.to improve safety at sea. In a film produced by the RNLI,

:11:13. > :11:15.Yona Hughes, from the Lleyn peninsula, speaks movingly

:11:16. > :11:17.about her brother Gareth Jones, who died after getting caught

:11:18. > :11:19.up in deck machinery while he was fishing

:11:20. > :11:21.alone on his boat. The campaign urges those working

:11:22. > :11:24.in the industry to take advantage of an EU fund to update aging

:11:25. > :11:31.equipment to improve safety. Football, and League Two bottom side

:11:32. > :11:35.Newport County's hopes of avoiding relegation were dealt another

:11:36. > :11:37.blow with a 1-1 draw The Exiles' sixth draw in eight

:11:38. > :11:42.games means they are still six Storm Doris is heading our way -

:11:43. > :12:01.Behnaz will explain all. In bringing some lively conditions

:12:02. > :12:05.as we head into Thursday. For tomorrow, a lot of wet and windy

:12:06. > :12:09.weather to deal with. Through tonight, Rayman pushes

:12:10. > :12:11.itself and eastwards. If early mild night, with

:12:12. > :12:17.temperatures no lower than eight Celsius. A cold weather front

:12:18. > :12:22.lingers too much of tomorrow, bringing with it a lot of cloud.

:12:23. > :12:28.Rain from the world go, so not nice for tomorrow's rush hour. It is wet

:12:29. > :12:31.and windy, and poor visibility will continue through the morning and

:12:32. > :12:33.into the after noon. For the rest of the British Isles, the best of the

:12:34. > :12:37.brightness across northern England and Scotland, and still a few

:12:38. > :12:40.showers there. Risk winds, and dry weather across Northern Ireland.

:12:41. > :12:44.Here in Wales tomorrow afternoon, a pretty soggy afternoon. Low-level

:12:45. > :12:50.cloud, mist and fog, and the wind not making it feel very nice. Top

:12:51. > :12:54.temperatures, 8-11. Through tomorrow night, the rain band appears for a

:12:55. > :12:59.time, remaining cloudy overnight. Another band of rain comes in with

:13:00. > :13:03.brisk winds. Overnight lows no lower than six Celsius, still fairly mild

:13:04. > :13:07.for the time of year, and there it is, Doris, arriving into Thursday,

:13:08. > :13:11.bringing with it wet and windy conditions. The rain will clear

:13:12. > :13:15.through by lunchtime, but we do have strong winds to deal with. The Met

:13:16. > :13:19.office has issued an amber warning for North Wales, where we can see

:13:20. > :13:23.gusts of up to 70 miles an hour, which could cause some problems.

:13:24. > :13:25.Keep an eye on the forecast. By Friday, it will turn colder and

:13:26. > :13:27.brighter, with some rain arriving. That's Wales Today.

:13:28. > :13:30.Thank you for watching.
