0:00:04 > 0:00:07Welcome to Wales Today.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10On a visit to Cardiff the Prime Minister attacks

0:00:10 > 0:00:12"divisive, obsessive nationalism" as she sets out her vision

0:00:12 > 0:00:16for a "more united" Britain.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18And left dangling above a volcano, the heart-stopping rescue

0:00:18 > 0:00:24for a family from Cardiff on holiday in Spain.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38Good evening.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40The Prime Minister Theresa May has attacked what she called,

0:00:40 > 0:00:43the "divisive and obsessive nationalism of Plaid

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Cymru and the SNP".

0:00:46 > 0:00:48At the Welsh Conservatives spring conference Mrs May also insisted

0:00:48 > 0:00:53she would take account of the interests of the devolved

0:00:53 > 0:00:55nations when the official Brexit negotiations get underway in less

0:00:55 > 0:00:58than a fortnight.

0:00:58 > 0:01:03From the conference in Cardiff, our political editor Nick Servini.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06The big story may have been about Scotland all week,

0:01:06 > 0:01:10but Theresa May was in Wales today to push the case for

0:01:10 > 0:01:13the United Kingdom to stay together.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16And the gloves came off for the first time in response

0:01:16 > 0:01:21to Nicola Sturgeon's calls for another independence referendum

0:01:21 > 0:01:30as Theresa May set out her plan for all corners of the UK.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31To aspire to represent all of the country,

0:01:31 > 0:01:36and all the people, and today, our goal must be nothing less.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Because we are now the party of the new centre ground

0:01:39 > 0:01:44of politics, rejecting the extremes of Labour socialist left comment

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Ukip's libertarian right and the divisive and obsessive

0:01:47 > 0:01:52nationalisms of Plaid Cymru and the SNP.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55APPLAUSE

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Theresa May has just addressed a hall full

0:01:58 > 0:02:02of the Welsh Tory Party faithful and they are lapping it up

0:02:02 > 0:02:05particularly the message about the strength of the union.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09But in truth much of her message was directed in particular

0:02:09 > 0:02:13to the Scottish public who are considering the prospects

0:02:13 > 0:02:17of another independence referendum.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20As the Welsh party gears up for council elections, there

0:02:20 > 0:02:24was little from the Prime Minister specifically related to Wales.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28How did the speech go down with these party figures?

0:02:28 > 0:02:31It is what we should be hearing, having a United Kingdom

0:02:31 > 0:02:33fighting on the same side.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37We need to ensure in negotiations we are a one United Kingdom,

0:02:37 > 0:02:42important from a conservative point of view.

0:02:42 > 0:02:47Plenty to chew over and Brexit wasn't far from everyone's lips.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50A waiting game before Article 50 is triggered.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53There is less than a fortnight ago.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57In the meantime, there was little detail other than saying

0:02:57 > 0:03:00the referendum result was an instruction to change the way

0:03:00 > 0:03:02the country works forever.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Good morning, conference.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08The leader of the Welsh Conservatives set the tone

0:03:08 > 0:03:12at the beginning of the conference, to use his speech to

0:03:12 > 0:03:15warn of the dangers of tearing the union apart.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19I have got a message for the SNP and other separatist

0:03:19 > 0:03:21parties across our idols, the United Kingdom, we cherish it,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25it is not a thing of the past, it remains as ever the world's

0:03:25 > 0:03:31greatest family of nations.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Nicola Sturgeon, take note.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39The great union you see here today is here to stay.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41APPLAUSE

0:03:41 > 0:03:43You could say it has been a tough batting surface

0:03:43 > 0:03:46for the Tories this week with trouble over expenses

0:03:46 > 0:03:50and budget U-turns.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53So appropriately at an event at the stadium, they tried to move

0:03:53 > 0:03:58from defence to attack.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01The mother of a 22-year-old woman who was killed at a Bed

0:04:01 > 0:04:03and Breakfast by one of the residentsis said to be

0:04:03 > 0:04:06tormented by the idea that the first police officer at the scene

0:04:06 > 0:04:08delayed going in.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Paula Yemm, seen here on the right, told an inquest it might have

0:04:11 > 0:04:14resulted in her daughter's death.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Cerys Yemm was killed by Matthew Williams at

0:04:17 > 0:04:19the Sirhowy Arms in Argoed in 2014.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23PC Kelda Griffiths said she'd been instructed to wait for back up,

0:04:23 > 0:04:27and knew Matthew Williams had previously threatened to kill police

0:04:27 > 0:04:29officers and their children.

0:04:29 > 0:04:35He was tasered by police at the scene and died shortly after.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38A North Wales Police officer, who raped a woman as she slept,

0:04:38 > 0:04:40has been sacked from the force.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42A special misconduct hearing was held into PC

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Iain Clarke, who was jailed for five years yesterday.

0:04:44 > 0:04:50Mold Crown Court heard he had shown no remorse.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53The number of black bin bags dumped illegally across Wales has nearly

0:04:53 > 0:04:55doubled in the last three years.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57In Cardiff there's been a five fold increase.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00The council's appointed more Waste Enforcement Officers,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03but critics blame the closure of rubbish tips and changes

0:05:03 > 0:05:06to refuse collection.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Because of those changes and the cuts we are seeing to waste

0:05:09 > 0:05:11collection sites across Cardiff, it's a ridiculous situation

0:05:11 > 0:05:17and something that needs to change.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Because we've got statutory targets we have to hit for

0:05:20 > 0:05:23recycling, so all we are doing is, seem to people, look, you don't have

0:05:23 > 0:05:27to throw so much rubbish away.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29a lot of that that you think is rubbish,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31can actually be recycled and reused.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33A family is recovering from a terrifying experience stuck

0:05:33 > 0:05:36in a cable-car dangling above a Spanish volcano.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Berwyn Jones, wife Jennifer and six-year-old twins Kai and Erin

0:05:39 > 0:05:45eventually had to abseil 250 metres to safety, before spending the night

0:05:45 > 0:05:48in a mountain shelter.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51They're now back in their Tenerife hotel, but say it's a holiday

0:05:51 > 0:05:53they'll never forget.

0:05:53 > 0:05:54Nick Palit reports.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Mount Teide is Spain's highest peak.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00The cable car to the summit is popular with tourists

0:06:00 > 0:06:03from around the world.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Among the people in this stricken gondola dangling

0:06:05 > 0:06:09above the volcano on Wednesday were the Jones family from Cardiff.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12It was frightening beyond belief.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16The mountain is 3,800 metres.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Over three times the size of Snowdon.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22We had reached the 3,500m point.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26Suddenly the cable car stopped.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28That must've been a terrifying experience, you have

0:06:28 > 0:06:30young children as well?

0:06:30 > 0:06:33We have twins and one of the twins, my daughter, she is disabled.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37She has cerebral palsy.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41She is of reduced mobility.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45After four hours, authorities radioed through on how to get out.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48They opened the floor of the cable car.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52They set in place some ropes.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55We had to abseil down.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Seeing your six-year-old children and your wife having to abseil

0:06:59 > 0:07:02down was terrifying.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04A major rescue operation swung into action to help

0:07:04 > 0:07:07the 250 off the mountain.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11For some of those higher up like the Joneses, when they reached

0:07:11 > 0:07:14ground their ordeal was far from over.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16They still had to hike miles downhill to a concrete shelter

0:07:16 > 0:07:20as temperatures dropped down to minus ten.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23The mountain rescue guys carried my daughter all the way down.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27I helped my son all the way down the mountain.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Eventually, 15 hours later, they were winched off the mountain.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33An investigation has begun into what caused

0:07:33 > 0:07:35the cable car to malfunction.

0:07:35 > 0:07:36A holiday to remember.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40We're never going to forget this one!

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Rugby, and the Wales Under 20s squad lost their six nations

0:07:43 > 0:07:46game against France.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49The final score 40 -20 with the home side scoring six
