:00:07. > :00:13.Dennis Payne's cancer was diagnosed early.

:00:14. > :00:17.Now a trial to fast track cancer diagnosis to help patients like him.

:00:18. > :00:18.Also tonight, five-year-old Joseph Smith killed

:00:19. > :00:23.His stepfather is found guilty of causing his death

:00:24. > :00:28.And in the first investigation of its kind in Wales -

:00:29. > :00:43.Andrew Thomas, a sheep rustler, is convicted using DNA.

:00:44. > :00:49.We have some of the worst cancer survival rates in Europe.

:00:50. > :00:51.For lung cancer, the most common cancer worldwide,

:00:52. > :00:54.Wales ranked second worst in a landmark study -

:00:55. > :00:56.coming 28th out of 29 European countries.

:00:57. > :01:02.A year ago Welsh doctors visited Denmark to see how cancer services

:01:03. > :01:09.In this special report our Health Correspondent, Owain Clarke,

:01:10. > :01:12.looks at the groundbreaking new trial hoping to catch cancer

:01:13. > :01:19.I know my own body, and I knew something was wrong.

:01:20. > :01:21.But Dennis Payne, from Aberdare, wasn't sure exactly what.

:01:22. > :01:24.Persuaded by his wife to go to his GP, he found out

:01:25. > :01:34.Once people band that around, that's what is kind of frightening.

:01:35. > :01:36.But he's glad he took his wife's advice.

:01:37. > :01:39.An early diagnosis means he's got a much better chance

:01:40. > :01:43.But the picture's not so rosy across the board.

:01:44. > :01:45.Cancer survival rates in Wales are worse than in many

:01:46. > :01:49.Wales has some of the most challenging outcomes

:01:50. > :01:52.for cancer mortality, cancer presentation, new cancers

:01:53. > :01:58.We are urgent about tackling this as an issue and doing something

:01:59. > :02:11.Last spring, this group from the Welsh NHS travelled to Denmark

:02:12. > :02:16.The country's invested heavily in specialist diagnostic

:02:17. > :02:19.centres like this one, where patients who might have cancer

:02:20. > :02:22.but have vague symptoms can have lots of scans and tests

:02:23. > :02:26.People had to wait too long within the health care system,

:02:27. > :02:28.from attending the health care until the start of treatment.

:02:29. > :02:32.So the group came back from Denmark not only convinced that the system

:02:33. > :02:34.they saw saved lives, but also convinced that it could be

:02:35. > :02:40.And to be fair, they didn't hang about.

:02:41. > :02:45.And here in the Cynon Valley, 40 GPs are about to take part

:02:46. > :02:47.in a new trial, built around the principles of the Danish model.

:02:48. > :02:51.So what will they be looking out for?

:02:52. > :02:54.We go through gaps where we don't see people for a while,

:02:55. > :02:58.but it's a bit like if you see somebody in the street you haven't

:02:59. > :03:01.seen for a long time and they look different, and it worries you.

:03:02. > :03:04.We get the same sort of signals when people come in and we can see

:03:05. > :03:07.this person looks really unwell, or they don't remind me of how

:03:08. > :03:13.So if a GP's gut instinct says it might be cancer,

:03:14. > :03:16.a patient won't have to wait for a series of individual tests.

:03:17. > :03:19.Instead they'll be sent within a week to a new diagnostic

:03:20. > :03:21.clinic here at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.

:03:22. > :03:23.There'll also be one at the Neath and Talbot Hospital,

:03:24. > :03:26.and as many tests and scans as necessary will be performed -

:03:27. > :03:31.But will there be enough staff and resources to make it work?

:03:32. > :03:33.There is fewer radiologists, there is not enough endoscopies.

:03:34. > :03:39.But we need a completely different way of working.

:03:40. > :03:44.Currently what we're doing is pretty much concentrating on a smaller

:03:45. > :03:49.What I would like to see is to provide the same level

:03:50. > :03:52.of high quality of care for all cancer patients.

:03:53. > :03:55.And even before the trial's underway, one group of patients

:03:56. > :04:01.at the Royal Glamorgan are already seeing the benefit.

:04:02. > :04:03.So this is an MRI of a gentleman's prostate who's come

:04:04. > :04:08.Those with suspected prostate cancer now routinely get an MRI scan

:04:09. > :04:14.We were having very long waits for our patients.

:04:15. > :04:17.You know, 60-100 days just to get through the biopsy,

:04:18. > :04:20.the results and everything, which is far too long.

:04:21. > :04:23.Now our results show we still occasionally have delays.

:04:24. > :04:27.But they're coming through the pathway within sort of 15-20 days.

:04:28. > :04:30.When it comes to cancer, speed often matters,

:04:31. > :04:33.and because of his early diagnosis, Dennis is confident he'll long be

:04:34. > :04:37.able to enjoy seeing his young family grow up.

:04:38. > :04:43.They're girls, and I've got a girl who's just turned seven as well.

:04:44. > :04:45.So I've got four children under seven.

:04:46. > :04:50.And if the new trial helps others, diagnostic centres might become

:04:51. > :04:55.a feature of the Welsh NHS, just like in Denmark.

:04:56. > :04:58.A 24-year-old man who killed his own stepson in a car crash has been

:04:59. > :05:01.found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

:05:02. > :05:04.Joseph Smith suffered multiple injuries when the car,

:05:05. > :05:07.driven by Dean Collins, hit oncoming traffic

:05:08. > :05:15.Erratic and weaving in and out of traffic -

:05:16. > :05:19.that's how witnesses at the trial described Dean Collins's

:05:20. > :05:22.driving in the moments leading up to this crash.

:05:23. > :05:25.The car he was driving crossed the central reservation

:05:26. > :05:28.into oncoming traffic on Western Avenue in Cardiff,

:05:29. > :05:33.His stepson, five-year-old Joseph Smith, suffered

:05:34. > :05:39.Today at Cardiff Crown Court, the jury found him guilty of

:05:40. > :05:42.causing death by dangerous driving, and four counts of causing serious

:05:43. > :05:49.His partner, Joseph's mum, Laura Bright, seen here by his side,

:05:50. > :05:52.was in the car with him, along with her mother and

:05:53. > :05:58.In the back was five-year-ikd Joseph Smith, a young football fan

:05:59. > :06:04.The court heard he was not in a booster seat -

:06:05. > :06:06.a legal requirement for children under 12, or under

:06:07. > :06:11.The seat belt crossed his neck instead of his body.

:06:12. > :06:14.The trial also heard how Collins had small traces of cocaine

:06:15. > :06:17.in his blood at the time, although it's not known how this

:06:18. > :06:24.The 24-year-old from Saint Mellons, who passed his driving test three

:06:25. > :06:27.months before the accident, says he has no memory

:06:28. > :06:31.of what happened, and that it was an unavoidable, tragic accident.

:06:32. > :06:38.On hearing the jury deliver all five guilty verdicts,

:06:39. > :06:41.Dean Collins turned towards the back of the court where his

:06:42. > :06:45.He held their gaze, gesturing towards them as he was led away.

:06:46. > :06:54.He's been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing tomorrow afternoon.

:06:55. > :06:58.More than 120 jobs are being lost at an aviation company in Flintshire

:06:59. > :07:05.Marshall Aviation Services saysit's closing its site in Broughton,

:07:06. > :07:08.which has been open since 1930, because of significant

:07:09. > :07:17.The Unite Union says the closure is devastating for North Wales.

:07:18. > :07:20.A brother has admitted sending abusive messages to four schoolgirls

:07:21. > :07:24.he thought were bullying his sister, who was later found dead.

:07:25. > :07:28.14-year-old, Nyah James was found at her home in Swansea in February.

:07:29. > :07:31.Police are investigating the circumstances.

:07:32. > :07:35.A court heard how Jordan Clements sent the online messages

:07:36. > :07:44.A sheep rustler from Garnant has been given a suspended jail term

:07:45. > :07:47.after police used DNA evidence to prove that newborn lambs had

:07:48. > :07:54.It's the first investigation of its kind in Wales.

:07:55. > :07:57.Andrew Thomas had previously pleaded guilty to handling 18 stolen sheep.

:07:58. > :08:01.He was ordered to pay ?1,000 in compensation to the victim.

:08:02. > :08:08.Newborn lambs, full of the joys of spring.

:08:09. > :08:11.But they proved to be the undoing of sheep rustler

:08:12. > :08:16.Swansea Crown Court heard that Thomas was himself a sheep farmer,

:08:17. > :08:21.Suspicions were raised at Llanybydder Livestock Market

:08:22. > :08:25.after sheep with damaged ears were sold by Thomas.

:08:26. > :08:27.There was concern that ear tags had been tampered with,

:08:28. > :08:30.as these pictures from Dyfed-Powys Police show.

:08:31. > :08:33.To prove Thomas's guilt, police used DNA tests on the sheep

:08:34. > :08:39.They waited for pregnant ewes that had been sold to give birth.

:08:40. > :08:42.Blood was then taken from the newborn lambs,

:08:43. > :08:47.which proved they'd been fathered by the rams on the victim's farm.

:08:48. > :08:50.It's believed to be the first investigation

:08:51. > :08:57.Out of the 15 lambs that we have, nine of those could be proven to be

:08:58. > :09:02.directly linked to the rams that the victim had.

:09:03. > :09:06.They were rams that the victim had bred himself as well.

:09:07. > :09:10.And they were rams that hadn't been used on sheep anywhere

:09:11. > :09:14.So the fact that we could directly link those lambs back

:09:15. > :09:16.to the farmer's stock proved then that the ewes, their mothers,

:09:17. > :09:21.The judge said the farming community had pulled together to defeat those

:09:22. > :09:27.He added that Thomas had caused a great deal of hurt and had stolen

:09:28. > :09:32.The judge said it would take a long time before they forgave him.

:09:33. > :09:35.Unions say livestock thefts can have a devastating impact

:09:36. > :09:39.on farmers, and they hope this case will act as a deterrent to rustlers.

:09:40. > :09:42.Well, I think this DNA testing is a new technology.

:09:43. > :09:47.We haven't seen this technology being used before,

:09:48. > :09:50.and I hope it will be a deterrent against rustlers, these and people

:09:51. > :09:54.who take part in these acts will think twice about doing it

:09:55. > :09:59.Andrew Thomas declined to comment as he left court,

:10:00. > :10:03.after receiving an eight-month suspended jail term

:10:04. > :10:05.and an order to pay ?1,000 in compensation to the victim.

:10:06. > :10:08.20 acres of lost garden have been restored in the Conwy Valley

:10:09. > :10:10.and are open to the public for the first time.

:10:11. > :10:13.A decade of conservation work has been carried out

:10:14. > :10:17.It means visitors can now explore the previously overgrown woodland

:10:18. > :10:24.and meadow in one of the oldest parts of the grounds.

:10:25. > :10:27.Rugby now, and Wales and Cardiff Blues flanker Sam Warburton

:10:28. > :10:30.is expected to be out because of injury for around six weeks.

:10:31. > :10:33.Warburton, who's tipped by some to lead the Lions Tour

:10:34. > :10:36.of New Zealand this summer, injured his knee on Friday

:10:37. > :10:39.and is likely miss the rest of the domestic season.

:10:40. > :10:43.But his coach at the Blues says he should be fit for the Lions.

:10:44. > :10:46.The squad will be announced a week tomorrow.

:10:47. > :10:48.Sam's very experienced and a good pro.

:10:49. > :10:53.He knows now if he works hard to get that right,

:10:54. > :10:58.Yeah, he's been fine today, and I think relatively good news

:10:59. > :11:07.Former Wales and Lions scrum half Mike Phillips has announced

:11:08. > :11:12.The 34-year-old played 94 times for Wales and won two

:11:13. > :11:18.Phillips, who currently plays for Sale Sharks,

:11:19. > :11:23.will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

:11:24. > :11:31.Let's see what the weather has in store - Derek's got the forecast.

:11:32. > :11:40.It turns out quite nice today - dry and write with sunshine. Not quite

:11:41. > :11:45.so nice as this tomorrow, though. Tonight, Cloud will increase. Maybe

:11:46. > :11:49.the odd light shower later in the south, but no more than that. Not as

:11:50. > :11:56.chilly as last night, but don't call with a westerly breeze. -- but still

:11:57. > :12:01.cool. Tomorrow, a few glimpses of sunshine but thicker cloud will

:12:02. > :12:04.bring more rain to the north in the late morning. The rain is tied to

:12:05. > :12:07.this cold front line through northern England which will slip

:12:08. > :12:12.southwards during the day. The rain will turn lighter and more patchy.

:12:13. > :12:17.Southern counties of England will be mostly dry with sunny intervals. To

:12:18. > :12:22.the north of the front, a mixture of sunshine and showers. Quite windy in

:12:23. > :12:26.Scotland and feeling chilly. In Wales tomorrow afternoon, plenty of

:12:27. > :12:31.cloud. That weak cold front bringing a few spots of rain. Brightening up

:12:32. > :12:36.to the north with the odd shower. Breezy than today with highs between

:12:37. > :12:40.10-13 C. Tomorrow evening and overnight the wind will blow one or

:12:41. > :12:45.two showers across Wales. Otherwise dry with gaps in the cloud. Nichola

:12:46. > :12:54.White, and chilly inland. A bright start places for Thursday. Dry

:12:55. > :12:59.weather as well. Plenty of cloud and a little rain around. You should

:13:00. > :13:04.turn milder with highs of 11-13 Celsius with a West to

:13:05. > :13:09.south-westerly breeze. More change over the next few days, but amounts

:13:10. > :13:12.of rain will be generally small. For the Easter holiday weekend we are

:13:13. > :13:16.looking at one or two showers and a lot of dry weather. Sunshine, too.

:13:17. > :13:18.Not the best of weather, but not too bad on the whole.

:13:19. > :13:21.That's Wales Today - thank you for watching.

:13:22. > :13:29.From all of us on the programme, goodnight.
