:00:59. > :01:03.after last week's surprise announcement of a snap election.

:01:04. > :01:09.Here's our political editor Nick Servini.

:01:10. > :01:12.He's one of the big beasts of Welsh politics.

:01:13. > :01:17.Ieuan Wyn Jones has been on the scene for many years.

:01:18. > :01:20.Not only as the former MP and Assembly member for Anglesey,

:01:21. > :01:24.but as the Welsh government's former Deputy First Minister.

:01:25. > :01:28.It's been confirmed that he'll try to become Plaid's candidate

:01:29. > :01:30.in June but he'll have to win the nomination against

:01:31. > :01:33.a number of others within the party on Wednesday.

:01:34. > :01:37.In these exceptional circumstances, and they are exceptional

:01:38. > :01:40.circumstances, I believe we need people of experience,

:01:41. > :01:44.people who know the political system,

:01:45. > :01:47.you know how to campaign, who have got experience both in parliament

:01:48. > :01:50.and the Assembly, the Welsh government and so on.

:01:51. > :01:53.All that experience should be put to use.

:01:54. > :01:56.If he wins, he'll be up against the current Labour MP,

:01:57. > :02:03.Albert Owen, who has confirmed he is seeking re-election.

:02:04. > :02:07.He retained the seat two years ago with a majority of just 229.

:02:08. > :02:09.There is also likely to be a strong Conservative challenge.

:02:12. > :02:15.The BBC will publish a full list of candidates

:02:16. > :02:20.Big name or not, there's always the debate about whether people

:02:21. > :02:24.vote for parties or personalities in general elections.

:02:25. > :02:30.It's the parties behind their policies and what they represent

:02:31. > :02:33.and what they have to offer instead of just a name.

:02:34. > :02:36.It is going to be both but it depends on the strength

:02:37. > :02:43.I'm still thinking about it but it's probably going to be the party.

:02:44. > :02:46.The announcement by Plaid's former leader comes as the current

:02:47. > :02:51.leader, Leanne Wood, said she would not be fighting her seat

:02:52. > :02:57.Today the Liberal Democrats announced the former

:02:58. > :03:01.assembly member, Lynette Parrott, will stand in Cardiff Central

:03:05. > :03:07.This is a top target seat for the Lib Dems

:03:08. > :03:13.Expect many more names to emerge in the coming days.

:03:14. > :03:16.The parties have set procedures in place to choose candidates

:03:17. > :03:19.but everything has been shunted forward because in a short campaign,

:03:20. > :03:26.Also in a short campaign, there is no time to build up

:03:27. > :03:30.a profile and that's why the parties,

:03:31. > :03:37.if they can will try to select those who are already recognised names.

:03:38. > :03:40.One leading academic says there's a big scramble going on behind

:03:41. > :03:43.the scenes as no-one was expecting having to find candidates

:03:44. > :03:47.for a number of years and now it has to be done within a matter of days.

:03:48. > :03:51.Often parties will take weeks, if not months to select a candidate.

:03:52. > :03:54.There will be a whole process involving hustings

:03:55. > :03:58.meetings in different parts of the constituencies

:03:59. > :04:01.and discussions and vetting and so on.

:04:02. > :04:04.A lot of it will have to go by the board because parties

:04:05. > :04:07.have to have people in place soon and ready to fight the election

:04:08. > :04:09.and if that means short-circuiting some of the normal mechanisms.

:04:10. > :04:14.There's a growing sense of urgency surrounding the selections.

:04:15. > :04:17.Every day without a candidate will be considered a wasted day

:04:18. > :04:23.The Prime Minister is due in Wales tomorrow.

:04:24. > :04:27.It'll be Theresa May's first visit here -

:04:35. > :04:41.to Wales last Friday, to the swing seat of Cardiff North.

:04:42. > :04:44.A general election poll - commissioned by ITV Wales -

:04:45. > :04:49.has predicted a surge in support for the Conservatives in June.

:04:50. > :04:52.It could see the Conservatives replace Labour -

:04:53. > :05:00.A thousand people were questioned in Wales last week by you go in this

:05:01. > :05:05.poll for Cardiff University and ITV Wales.

:05:06. > :05:08.And what it has put the support for the parties that is the

:05:09. > :05:10.Conservatives 40%, Labour 30%, in Wales, Plaid Cymru 13%.

:05:11. > :05:19.And if you project that onto the potential

:05:20. > :05:23.numbers of seats that could be won, were looking at 21 seats in Wales

:05:24. > :05:26.for the Conservatives, 15 for Labour, three for

:05:27. > :05:34.So, it shows an unprecedented ten point

:05:35. > :05:37.lead for the Tories in Wales, something no one has seen in modern

:05:38. > :05:44.Professor Roger Scully from Cardiff University

:05:45. > :05:47.has spoken about Wales, potentially, being on the brink of

:06:04. > :06:05.campaign still see and there are dangers in making its seat

:06:06. > :06:07.predictions off the back of voting intention polls.

:06:08. > :06:09.Nevertheless, this is a sensational prediction and

:06:10. > :06:12.because of that, I think, it will create a lot of noise,
