0:00:00 > 0:00:01get gold for Great Britain again. The double, double.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Good Evening.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17The family of a young woman from Ceredigion,

0:00:17 > 0:00:22killed by a drunk-driver are calling for a change in the law to allow

0:00:22 > 0:00:24judges to pass harsher sentences.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27The motorist who killed Miriam Briddon will spend just over

0:00:27 > 0:00:32two years in jail and Miriam's family say that's just not

0:00:32 > 0:00:33a strong enough deterrent.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35They've now launched an online petition urging the Government

0:00:35 > 0:00:37to toughen penalties for drink-drive offences.

0:00:37 > 0:00:43Nick Palit reports.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Miriam Briddon was just 21 when she died in a crash

0:00:46 > 0:00:47back in March 2014.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Her car was hit by another, driven by Gareth Entwistle

0:00:49 > 0:00:51who admitted causing death by dangerous

0:00:51 > 0:00:53driving while under the

0:00:53 > 0:00:55influence of alcohol.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57He was sentenced to 5.5 years but that was

0:00:57 > 0:00:59cut by six months on appeal.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Two months on Miriam's mother has launched an

0:01:01 > 0:01:05online petition calling for tougher sentences.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09It has already reached 77,000 signatures.

0:01:09 > 0:01:15Causing death by drink-driving is a very serious

0:01:15 > 0:01:19crime and we feel at the moment that the sentences given does not

0:01:19 > 0:01:22reflect the seriousness of the crime.

0:01:22 > 0:01:27Lenient sentences fail to deter offenders and it fails to give

0:01:27 > 0:01:32victims justice.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36When an innocent person is killed the sentences given

0:01:36 > 0:01:39should reflect the crime.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Miriam's killer was sentenced to five years

0:01:43 > 0:01:46but he will only serve half of that in jail.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48A spokesman for The Ministry of Justice said it is

0:01:48 > 0:01:50currently reviewing

0:01:50 > 0:01:52penalties for drink-driving related offences in order to find

0:01:52 > 0:01:53the best way forward.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55He added sentencing is a matter for individual judges making

0:01:55 > 0:01:59decisions on the facts of individual cases.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02But Miriam's mother is just hopeful that stronger deterrents will mean

0:02:02 > 0:02:04fewer families will suffer the pain and loss

0:02:04 > 0:02:08that they've been through.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11The success of Team GB at the Rio Olympics must be used

0:02:30 > 0:02:31It's not easy.

0:02:33 > 0:02:34buy a tennis racket.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Play it for a couple of weeks and disappear.

0:02:36 > 0:02:37You know, that's kind of what happens

0:02:37 > 0:02:40and people do dip in and out of their physical

0:02:40 > 0:02:41activity and sport as well.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43So people say we're a sporty nation.

0:02:43 > 0:02:49I think we're a nation that really likes watching sport.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53in the Waun Wen area of Swansea this morning.
