:00:11. > :00:13.The number of European students choosing to study at Welsh
:00:14. > :00:15.universities has hit an all-time high.
:00:16. > :00:17.More than a thousand have been accepted on to courses
:00:18. > :00:22.Cardiff and Aberystwyth universities both received a record number
:00:23. > :00:24.of applications from EU students for this term.
:00:25. > :00:26.But Aberystwyth say the numbers are still fewer than predicted
:00:27. > :00:45.When more than 100 prospective students from the EU with true
:00:46. > :00:50.applications to study at Aberystwyth University earlier this summer, the
:00:51. > :00:55.Acting Vice Chancellor was clear. He blamed it on the result of EU
:00:56. > :00:59.referendum. Now according to the latest figures from the University
:01:00. > :01:03.admissions service here in Aberystwyth and in Cardiff there has
:01:04. > :01:09.been a record number of applications from EU students for this term. Many
:01:10. > :01:13.in the sector say it is too early to know the long-term effects of
:01:14. > :01:17.Brexit, but some believe this increase in applications might be a
:01:18. > :01:22.short-term gain. I am sure the universities happen marketing the
:01:23. > :01:28.fact that you would pay the same fees as those in Wales, as compared
:01:29. > :01:34.to ?9,000 normally. And then of course they might be coming in
:01:35. > :01:38.anticipation of Brexit and what a chance later on if Britain leaves
:01:39. > :01:43.the EU to come in on such favourable terms. While Cardiff University says
:01:44. > :01:48.Brexit has led to little impact so far on its finances, reacting to
:01:49. > :01:51.this latest data Aberystwyth University says numbers applying are
:01:52. > :01:57.still measurably fewer than predicted before the referendum. In
:01:58. > :02:00.a statement they see Brexit has undoubtedly been a factor with
:02:01. > :02:04.applicants looking at what the options are on their own countries.
:02:05. > :02:12.And allegedly they say this will have an impact on our finances. With
:02:13. > :02:17.students still able to apply until September the 20th, the University
:02:18. > :02:20.of South Wales, banger and other university say that they cannot
:02:21. > :02:25.confirm how many EU students will be unrolled when term starts. The Welsh
:02:26. > :02:31.government has said the universities will continue to do their best to
:02:32. > :02:35.recruit overseas students. Meanwhile the Education Secretary said it will
:02:36. > :02:37.take time for educational reforms here to reflect pupils performances
:02:38. > :02:39.in the International pests. More than 70 countries are signed up
:02:40. > :02:42.to the tests that assess students' skills in maths, reading
:02:43. > :02:44.and science every three years. Wales performed worse than the rest
:02:45. > :02:47.of the UK in 2012. The next set of results will be
:02:48. > :02:51.published in December. Some visitors at Festival number 6
:02:52. > :02:54.in Portmeirion say they've been stranded for hours as they try
:02:55. > :02:56.to make their way home The bad weather caused some vehicles
:02:57. > :03:01.to get stuck in the car park. Organisers have apologised and say
:03:02. > :03:08.they're providing recovery vehicles. Football, and Wales captain
:03:09. > :03:10.Ashley Williams says he has no intention of retiring
:03:11. > :03:12.from international football, ahead of the start of their 2018
:03:13. > :03:14.World Cup qualifying campaign. His England counterpart Wayne Rooney
:03:15. > :03:18.has said the tournament 32 year old Williams said they're
:03:19. > :03:24.now focused on getting another taste of the elation they experienced
:03:25. > :03:40.in the summer - As summer school, there is was not a
:03:41. > :03:44.bad one. Of the European Championship lifted Wales both
:03:45. > :03:49.through the rankings and in the eyes of the fans. But it is -- it has
:03:50. > :03:54.also raised aspirations and so the next challenge begins. The 2018
:03:55. > :04:00.World Cup qualifying campaign. 11th in Fifa world rankings, whilst take
:04:01. > :04:07.on Moldova, ranked 165th. But Wales have been tripped up by smaller
:04:08. > :04:12.nations before. We do not think we can roll up and have it, our way.
:04:13. > :04:19.And that it will be over after 60 minutes. I sat here two years ago
:04:20. > :04:24.before the end only in game where everyone thought it would be the
:04:25. > :04:29.order for adding to be easy and we did not play very well. We got
:04:30. > :04:34.planned Bassett after the game. But the taste of success over the summer
:04:35. > :04:41.has left them hungry for more. I have to use that word desperation.
:04:42. > :04:47.Every result we get is massive for us. For the captain Ashley Williams
:04:48. > :04:51.a busy summer was topped by a move from Swansea to Everton. If Wayne
:04:52. > :04:56.Rooney is planning his retirement from international duty is Ben
:04:57. > :05:00.Williams has other plans. I am not retiring today unfortunately. I feel
:05:01. > :05:05.good, I am enjoying it. I love coming to play for Wales. But with
:05:06. > :05:12.success comes a new challenge. We're not the underdogs. We have to manage
:05:13. > :05:14.that and deal with it. A sell-out crowd is expected tomorrow, kick-off
:05:15. > :05:16.is at 745. Rugby, and Cardiff Blues
:05:17. > :05:18.got their Pro12 season off to a good start -
:05:19. > :05:21.picking up a bonus point, with their 34-16 win over Edinburgh
:05:22. > :05:23.at the Arms Park. Fly half Steve Shingler totted
:05:24. > :05:25.up 15 of those points A quick look at the forecast, and
:05:26. > :05:31.rain will spread east overnight - affecting all parts by dawn,
:05:32. > :05:32.with minimum temperatures As for tomorrow, it'll be rather
:05:33. > :05:38.cloudy, with light rain and drizzle during the day, along with fog over
:05:39. > :05:41.the coast and hills. Warm and humid though,
:05:42. > :05:43.with some brighter spells later. That's Wales Today -
:05:44. > :05:51.I'll be back with your late bulletin Hope you can join me,
:05:52. > :05:56.until then, thanks for watching
