0:00:18 > 0:00:19Good evening.

0:00:19 > 0:00:19Councils are calling for more investment in social care

0:00:19 > 0:00:23here after extra money was announced for England in the

0:00:23 > 0:00:25Chancellor's budget.

0:00:25 > 0:00:26Social care funding in Wales has been protected

0:00:26 > 0:00:27in the past few years.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Labour Assembly Member Eluned Morgan told BBC Wales' Sunday Politics

0:00:30 > 0:00:33programme more money isn't enough, and a new strategy is needed

0:00:33 > 0:00:36to deal with the demands of an ageing population.

0:00:36 > 0:00:44Bethan Lewis reports.

0:00:44 > 0:00:45You work out in the garden?

0:00:45 > 0:00:46Yeah.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Jonathan Parker and his family are amongst the thousands that

0:00:49 > 0:00:54depend on social care.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56Support workers provide 17 hours a week of care

0:00:56 > 0:00:57and support for Jonathan.

0:00:57 > 0:01:04I go swimming.

0:01:04 > 0:01:10I go for walks.

0:01:10 > 0:01:17I go for walks and I go, I go bowling.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20The council pays an organisation to provide support for Jonathan

0:01:20 > 0:01:23so he can live at home and be independent.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27In the budget, the Chancellor announced an extra ?2 billion

0:01:27 > 0:01:31for adult social care in England, as a result of that another

0:01:31 > 0:01:36spending announcements, the UK Government says over four

0:01:36 > 0:01:39years still be around ?50 million a year for the Welsh government.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43It's not clear yet how much of that, if any, will go to social care,

0:01:43 > 0:01:45but Welsh councils say there is an urgent need

0:01:45 > 0:01:48for a substantial injection of cash.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50We've got a ?90 million pressure on an annual basis

0:01:50 > 0:01:59on Welsh social care, so, you know, even if the whole

0:01:59 > 0:02:0650 million goes in from the Welsh government, it still doesn't mean

0:02:06 > 0:02:09the entirety of that pressure.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12I think there is potential for us to marry here economic development

0:02:12 > 0:02:18with the care service, in the sense that we could be

0:02:18 > 0:02:20starting to build homes, for example, that are adequate

0:02:20 > 0:02:23for a longer term future for housing older people.

0:02:23 > 0:02:32That is something where we could build an economic

0:02:34 > 0:02:39I think that we can start to look creatively at.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Providing care at home is the main theme of a plan

0:02:42 > 0:02:44published this week by a new organisation.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Social Care in Wales launches officially next month and takes over

0:02:46 > 0:02:48from the care Council but with beefed up responsibilities.

0:02:48 > 0:02:49These are not simple issues.

0:02:49 > 0:02:55These are very complex issues and a growing situation.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58But I'm confident that we have here in Wales the tools to get

0:02:58 > 0:03:00to grips with the challenges that we have got.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02The Welsh government will have to balance competing demands

0:03:02 > 0:03:05on the extra cash from the budget, but whatever the decision,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07it's certain more money will provide all the answers.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09A new operator will run flights between Cardiff and Anglesey

0:03:09 > 0:03:10from tomorrow morning.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Eastern Airways has been appointed to run the service

0:03:12 > 0:03:15after the previous operator City Wing went into liquidation.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17The Welsh government pays an annual subsidy

0:03:17 > 0:03:18of ?1.2 million to run the route.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20All pre-booked tickets will be valid on the new planes.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23A 22-year-old man was treated in hospital after an incident

0:03:23 > 0:03:26in Swansea City Centre in the early hours of this morning.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Police went to the Kingsway at around half past 3

0:03:29 > 0:03:30following a report of an assault.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Another man was arrested and remains in custody.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Nearby roads were closed for a short time to allow forensic

0:03:35 > 0:03:40examinations to take place but have since reopened.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Speaking up for voters who oppose Brexit will help

0:03:43 > 0:03:46the Welsh Liberal Democrats in May's local elections.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49That's according to their President Roger Williams

0:03:49 > 0:03:52who was speaking at the party's conference in Swansea.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Delegates there voted to call on the UK government to allow

0:03:55 > 0:03:58a referendum on the terms of leaving the EU.

0:03:58 > 0:04:03More from our political reporter, Cemlyn Davies.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08Outside the conference venue today, clear signs that spring has sprung,

0:04:08 > 0:04:12and after a long, bleak time in the electrical cold,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14the Liberal Democrats feel they are finally

0:04:14 > 0:04:24sprouting green shoots, too.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26The party believes it can use it is clear united opposition

0:04:26 > 0:04:31to Brexit to woo voters who wanted Britain to stay in the EU.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33I didn't want the result but I accepted the result.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35And the Liberal Democrats have accepted the result.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38It's the will of the people but we also were very conscious that

0:04:38 > 0:04:4115 million people voted to stay within the European Union as well.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46And they have, they have...

0:04:46 > 0:04:55We have to take into account everyone,

0:04:56 > 0:04:58We have to take into account their view,

0:04:58 > 0:05:01because they have a role to play in this process as well.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Ahead of the council elections, the Welsh Liberal Democrats

0:05:03 > 0:05:05are clearly targeting those who voted remain last June.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09But of course Wales as a whole, like the UK, voted to leave the EU.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11And so with another electoral test fast approaching,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14the party is well aware that it still has plenty of work to do

0:05:14 > 0:05:20to ensure its recent progress isn't nipped in the bud in May.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23A quick look at the weather and tonight will be dry with clear

0:05:23 > 0:05:25spells for most places.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It will turn rather chilly compared to recent nights, with patchy frost

0:05:28 > 0:05:29in some rural spots.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Some thicker cloud possibly arriving in the north-west later.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Temperatures down to 3 Celsius in places.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Monday will be mainly fine and dry, with bright or sunny spells.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Although, it'll be cloudier for a time in the west with some

0:05:40 > 0:05:41rain over the hills.

0:05:41 > 0:05:50Feeling mild again - with highs of 15 Celsius.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52That's it from the BBC Wales today newsteam for now.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Join us for the latest at 10.20pm.

0:05:54 > 0:05:55Enjoy the rest of your evening.

0:05:55 > 0:06:01Goodbye.
