0:01:25 > 0:01:30Charities say there is a mistaken belief it can benefit someone.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33It is generally based on an understanding of gender and it

0:01:33 > 0:01:36comes over as a means of controlling women's sexuality.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39It is not based on anything that is medically beneficial

0:01:39 > 0:01:41to women or girls at all.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45FGM is a form of violence against women and it is a violation

0:01:45 > 0:01:48of women and girls' human rights.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Welsh Women's Aid says these figures may be just the tip of the iceberg.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56Estimating there could be up to 2000 women in Wales affected.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59But it hopes these recorded cases will highlight the urgent need

0:01:59 > 0:02:05for support for women and girls living with the consequences.
