0:00:00 > 0:00:01That's it.
0:00:14 > 0:00:15Good evening.
0:00:15 > 0:00:25The Welsh Labour Leader says he would support the UK borrowing
0:00:25 > 0:00:27an extra ?500 billion if the party wins
0:00:27 > 0:00:28the general election.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31On a special leaders' debate programme on Sunday Politics Wales,
0:00:31 > 0:00:33Carwyn Jones said "there's never been a better time to borrow".
0:00:33 > 0:00:37Here's our political correspondent, Arwyn Jones
0:00:37 > 0:00:40Today, for the first time since the election was called,
0:00:40 > 0:00:44the leaders of the five main parties in Wales went head-to-head.
0:00:44 > 0:00:48Top of the agenda, Brexit and the economy.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51And from Labour's leader here, support for plans of ?500 billion
0:00:51 > 0:00:53of borrowing to help give the UK economy a boost.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55In 1945, a Labour government came in after the war,
0:00:55 > 0:00:58when things were much, much worse than they are now,
0:00:58 > 0:01:00when the UK was in a far more difficult state.
0:01:00 > 0:01:03Yet it created the NHS, it made sure the economy was rebuilt.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05It built houses.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08All these things were done at a far more difficult time.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11If they could do it, there is no reason why a Labour government
0:01:11 > 0:01:12cannot do it after June.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Two years ago, the Conservatives made a cast-iron promise
0:01:15 > 0:01:16not to raise any taxes.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19This time around, they are refusing to rule it out while explaining why
0:01:19 > 0:01:21they are a low tax party.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24People will not put in the time, they will not create
0:01:24 > 0:01:26the opportunities in the economy, entrepreneurs will not invest
0:01:26 > 0:01:30and ultimately you will see a contraction of the economy.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34So we are the low tax party and we stand on that record.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37What we are also about is making sure that the public finances
0:01:37 > 0:01:46are in good health.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51Plaid Cymru go into this election uncertain if the party
0:01:51 > 0:01:57leader will stand or not.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59Today she said they faced what she cold grave threats
0:01:59 > 0:02:00which needed to be defended.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03We are under threat from an extreme toady Brexit which risks pulling
0:02:03 > 0:02:05is out of the single market.
0:02:05 > 0:02:06That risks many jobs in Wales.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09So as well as the future of public services and continued cuts,
0:02:09 > 0:02:14people also face a downturn in their economic outlook.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16Ukip have struggled to find their feet after a heady
0:02:16 > 0:02:18heights of the Brexit referendum victory but insists there
0:02:18 > 0:02:23is a role for the party.
0:02:23 > 0:02:31I intend to be a candidate myself to give a lead because elections
0:02:31 > 0:02:34for Ukip our work in progress always and one election leads to another.
0:02:34 > 0:02:38And we are still building our support base and this is going to be
0:02:38 > 0:02:39an important opportunity.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41The Liberal Democrats are trying to appeal to those who voted
0:02:41 > 0:02:44remained in the EU referendum and to rule out returning
0:02:44 > 0:02:45to a coalition.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47We're not going to have a Labour government
0:02:47 > 0:02:48at the end of this process.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50We are not great to have a coalition government.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53But it is very important that the stories of all the parties
0:02:53 > 0:02:56are very clear on what is at stake and the Liberal Democrats will be
0:02:56 > 0:02:58doing just that in the weeks ahead.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01The opening round of leaders debates is over about six
0:03:01 > 0:03:03weeks until polling day, there's plenty more debating be had.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14sail through a gale.
0:03:14 > 0:03:20Most families, certainly my family talked a great deal about that
0:03:20 > 0:03:23dreadful night when so many lives were lost.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41who'd tried to save them.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44There off the rocky South Wales coast lies the broken hulk
0:03:44 > 0:03:45of the 7000 tonne Steam Ship Samtampa.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48In a 70 mph gale, the SS Samtampa ran aground off

0:04:14 > 0:04:18We stand here today and none of us can even think
0:04:18 > 0:04:20what it was like on that night.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22Aside from today's memorial, there are constant reminders
0:04:22 > 0:04:26of the tragedy that happened on these rocks.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29The crews here today have told me that these blue bits are melted
0:04:29 > 0:04:32copper where they burnt the wreck of the lifeboat.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35And this is one of the surviving nails.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38Today's crews joined the service from the sea,

0:04:58 > 0:05:00But it was his team mate, Matthew Rees who stole
0:05:00 > 0:05:02the headlines, for helping a struggling competitor
0:05:02 > 0:05:04cross the line.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07Rees took hold of David Wyeth just over 100 metres from the finish
0:05:07 > 0:05:09and guided him up The Mall.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12He's been praised for epitomising the spirit of the race.
