0:00:11 > 0:00:13Good evening.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16The Welsh Labour Leader says he would support the UK borrowing

0:00:16 > 0:00:20an extra ?500 billion if the party wins the general election.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24On a special leaders' debate programme on Sunday Politics Wales,

0:00:24 > 0:00:28Carwyn Jones said "there's never been a better time to borrow".

0:00:28 > 0:00:34Here's our political correspondent, Arwyn Jones

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Today, for the first time since the election was called,

0:00:36 > 0:00:39the leaders of the five main parties in Wales went head-to-head.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Top of the agenda - Brexit and the economy.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46And for Labour's leader here, support for plans of ?500 billion

0:00:46 > 0:00:50of borrowing to help give the UK economy a boost.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54In 1945, a Labour government came in after the war,

0:00:54 > 0:00:56when things were much, much worse than they are now,

0:00:56 > 0:00:59when the UK was in a far more difficult state.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Yet it created the NHS, it made sure the economy was rebuilt.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03It built houses.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06All these things were done at a far more difficult time.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09If they could do it, there is no reason why a Labour

0:01:09 > 0:01:10government can't do it after June.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Two years ago, the Conservatives made a cast-iron promise

0:01:13 > 0:01:15not to raise any taxes.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17This time around, they are refusing to rule it out while explaining why

0:01:17 > 0:01:19they are a low tax party.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22People will not put in the time, they will not create

0:01:22 > 0:01:24the opportunities in the economy, entrepreneurs will not invest

0:01:24 > 0:01:27and ultimately you will see a contraction of the economy.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30So we are the low tax party and we stand on that record.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33What we are also about is making sure that the public

0:01:33 > 0:01:36finances are in good health.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39After much thought, Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood has tonight

0:01:39 > 0:01:41announced she won't be standing in the Rhondda.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43In a debate, she said Wales faces grave threats that

0:01:43 > 0:01:47need to be defended.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50We are under threat from an extreme Tory Brexit which risks pulling us

0:01:50 > 0:01:52out of the single market.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56That risks many jobs in Wales.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59So as well as the future of public services and continued cuts,

0:01:59 > 0:02:04people also face a downturn in their economic outlook.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08Ukip have struggled to find their feet after the heady heights

0:02:08 > 0:02:10of the Brexit referendum victory but insist there is still

0:02:10 > 0:02:15a role for the party.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17I intend to be a candidate myself to give a lead,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20because elections for Ukip, are a work in progress always,

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and one election leads to another.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26And we are still building our support base and this is going to be

0:02:26 > 0:02:27an important opportunity.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30The Liberal Democrats are trying to appeal to those who voted remain

0:02:30 > 0:02:33in the EU referendum and to rule out returning to a coalition.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35We're not going to have a Labour government

0:02:35 > 0:02:36at the end of this process.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38We are not going to have a coalition government.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41But it is very important that all the parties are very

0:02:41 > 0:02:44clear on what is at stake and the Liberal Democrats will be

0:02:44 > 0:03:14doing just that in the weeks ahead.

0:03:14 > 0:03:14The opening round of leaders debates is over but with six

0:03:14 > 0:03:14weeks until polling day, there's plenty more debating be had.

0:03:14 > 0:03:14More than a hundred young farmers from Mid Wales have been caught up

0:03:14 > 0:03:14in a fire at a hotel in Torquay, which police believe

0:03:14 > 0:03:15was started deliberately.

0:03:15 > 0:03:15It broke out in the basement bar of the Bancourt Hotel

0:03:15 > 0:03:15just after midnight.

0:03:15 > 0:03:16Three people were injured.

0:03:16 > 0:03:17The young farmers from Brecnock and Radnor were staying

0:03:17 > 0:03:19there for an annual convention.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22A service to mark the 70th anniversary of one of Wales'

0:03:22 > 0:03:24worst maritime disasters, has been held near Porthcawl.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27On this day in 1947, 47 people died when the SS Samtampa

0:03:27 > 0:03:30ran aground on rocks at Sker Point, after trying to sail

0:03:30 > 0:03:33through a force 11 gale.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36All 39 crew members died along with eight rescuers

0:03:36 > 0:03:40from Mumbles lifeboat.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43They talk about people having tar on their windows several miles

0:03:43 > 0:03:46inland and the acrid smell of oil.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Children from schools being stopped from going

0:03:48 > 0:03:52on the beach around, you know, Spring holidays, etc.

0:03:52 > 0:03:58It was a devastating event.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Thousands of Welsh runners have been taking part

0:04:00 > 0:04:02in the London Marathon today.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05It was a very successful race for Swansea Harrier, Josh Griffiths,

0:04:05 > 0:04:08who was the first UK athlete to cross the line.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11But it was his team-mate, Matthew Rees who stole

0:04:11 > 0:04:14the headlines, for helping a struggling competitor

0:04:14 > 0:04:16cross the line.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Rees took hold of David Wyeth just over 100 metres from the finish

0:04:19 > 0:04:23and guided him up The Mall.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25He's been praised for epitomising the spirit of the race.

0:04:25 > 0:04:26Someone had to help him.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29I'm sure someone else would have if it wasn't me.

0:04:29 > 0:04:30So, yeah, we both had run 26 miles.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32We had to make that final 300 metres.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35And the crowd were incredible and really helped me and him

0:04:35 > 0:04:38get to the line too.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41The weather forecast and tomorrow will be a cloudy day

0:04:41 > 0:04:42with outbreaks of rain, which could be heavy

0:04:42 > 0:04:44at times in places.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46It should clear by the evening, with much colder air

0:04:46 > 0:04:49moving in from the north, followed by a sharp frost.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51Top temperature 13 Celsius.

0:04:51 > 0:04:52That's Wales Today.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55We're back in Breakfast with updates from 6.25am.

0:04:55 > 0:05:00From me and the weekend team, goodnight.
