:00:18. > :00:21.A verdict is expected in the trial of the man accused of making the

:00:21. > :00:26.Bali bombs. Prosecution begins its closing

:00:26. > :00:32.arguments in the hearing of Norway's self-confessed killer,

:00:32. > :00:37.Anders Behring Breivik. Welcome to BBC World News. Also in

:00:37. > :00:42.the programme: Could Cyprus be the next EU country that needs an merge

:00:42. > :00:52.bail out? And launching the London 2012 festival. A cultural

:00:52. > :00:57.

:00:57. > :01:02.celebration ahead of the Olympic Games.

:01:02. > :01:07.Hello. Thank you for joining us. In Indonesia, an air force plane has

:01:07. > :01:10.crashed into a housing complex in the east of the capital. The houses

:01:10. > :01:14.are burning there. An air force spokesperson says that six of the

:01:14. > :01:18.seven crew members on board have been killed. An official at the

:01:18. > :01:21.East Jakarta Fire Brigade, said that the Fokker F-27 turbo prop

:01:21. > :01:25.aircraft crashed near a street within Halim Perdanaskusuma Air

:01:25. > :01:29.Base. It is a military housing complex.

:01:29. > :01:33.The aircraft was reported to have been conducting a training flight,

:01:33. > :01:43.firefighters are now on sight. Joining me on the line from Jakarta

:01:43. > :01:53.is the BBC's Pinter Kerana. What is the latest that you know about the

:01:53. > :01:53.

:01:53. > :02:03.crash? Pinter, if you can hear us, do you know the latest on the

:02:03. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:09.crash? Sorry, I could not hear you clearly but I will tell you the

:02:09. > :02:16.latest information that we have received here.

:02:16. > :02:26.The military official has confirmed to us that seven people were aboard

:02:26. > :02:27.

:02:27. > :02:35.the ill-feated Fokker F-27. -- ill -fated Fokker F-27. It

:02:35. > :02:39.crashed here earlier today. Sorry, that was Pinter joining us

:02:39. > :02:44.live from Jakarta in clearly a difficult communication line there.

:02:44. > :02:51.So we will try to return to Jakarta when we get the opportunity, but

:02:51. > :02:59.clearly a scene of destruction and as was being said, that for sure

:02:59. > :03:04.six of the seven people died n that were in the plane. Now, the most

:03:04. > :03:09.wanted man, the United States posted a $1 million bounty on its

:03:09. > :03:12.head, now a court is about to deliver its verdict on the head of

:03:13. > :03:19.Umar Patek. He is accused much assembling the

:03:19. > :03:24.bombs used on the attack on the beach resort in Bali and on attacks

:03:24. > :03:30.on churches two years earlier. The dead list to date was almost00

:03:30. > :03:33.people, most of them foreigners. Our spokesperson spoke about when

:03:33. > :03:37.we may expect a verdict. We have been following the verdict,

:03:37. > :03:41.the proceedings all day from outside of the court house. Still

:03:41. > :03:44.it does not seem we are closer to an announcement. That is not

:03:44. > :03:49.because of complications or anything, but what has happened is

:03:49. > :03:56.that the judges have chosen to read the entire document, it appears,

:03:56. > :04:00.all 275 pages of it. That is the witnesses testimonyis and the

:04:00. > :04:03.evidence presented to them during the four-month trial. So it is

:04:03. > :04:08.taking longer than expected. There was a sense that we would have had

:04:08. > :04:12.a verdict a little earlier in the day, but it now looks like we may

:04:12. > :04:17.get a verdict towards the end of the day. That is where we are.

:04:17. > :04:23.It is worth saying that the accusations on him centre around

:04:23. > :04:28.assembling the bombs, don't they? Absolutely. That is certainly what

:04:28. > :04:33.he has consistently said throughout his defence. Now, the prosecution

:04:33. > :04:38.has alleged that Umar Patek was one of the chief masterminders of the

:04:38. > :04:43.Bali attacks. One of the chief bomb makers as well, in fact, but he and

:04:43. > :04:49.his defence team said that all he was involved in was building the

:04:49. > :04:53.bombs. He was not involved in the planning of the attacks nor the

:04:53. > :04:58.main bomb-maker, he is saying. He has shown throughout the trial a

:04:58. > :05:03.degree of remorse. Apologising many times and in one item, saying he

:05:03. > :05:06.was against the Bali bombings from the start. Legally, the prosecution

:05:06. > :05:11.team could have asked for the maximum punishment for the charges

:05:11. > :05:15.that he faces which is death by firing squad but instead chose to

:05:15. > :05:19.ask for a life in prison sentence. A sentence for life. The reason

:05:19. > :05:23.they are saying because he has shown remorse throughout the

:05:23. > :05:27.proceedings of the trial. Australian authorities have

:05:27. > :05:32.launched a massive sea rescue operation for up to 200 asylum

:05:33. > :05:38.sleekers off the coast of Christmas island. A vessel issued a distress

:05:38. > :05:41.call saying it had capsized 120 nautical miles north of the island.

:05:41. > :05:46.A plane has spotted people in the water.

:05:46. > :05:50.Joining me now is the BBC's Duncan Kennedy, live from Sydney. Duncan,

:05:50. > :05:54.what more do we know about the capsizing and about the rescue

:05:54. > :05:58.mission? Well, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation are

:05:58. > :06:02.reporting that there may be two vessels involved. One with people

:06:02. > :06:08.from the Middle East, one with people from Sri Lanka. That's not

:06:08. > :06:11.been confirmed. What we know is that one cargo ship is at the scene.

:06:11. > :06:16.A plane is also there. It is reporting people standing on the

:06:16. > :06:21.hull of one of the upturned vessels. The plane reports that 40 people

:06:21. > :06:26.may be standing on the hull. It is also reported that as many as 35-

:06:26. > :06:31.plus people are in the water. Some of whom are wearing lifejackets.

:06:31. > :06:35.Although the Australian authorities say if 200 people are involved in

:06:35. > :06:41.these, these vessels that bring in the asylum sleekers are unlikely to

:06:41. > :06:45.have 200 lifejackets. Two Anywayy and three Mer chant ships from the

:06:45. > :06:50.Australian side are steaming to the area, but there is not much light

:06:50. > :06:54.left. Only an hour or two before the darkness descends. So this is

:06:54. > :07:04.very much an emergency situation to get to the people to do what they

:07:04. > :07:04.

:07:04. > :07:09.can in the conditions available. Now with the business news. There

:07:09. > :07:14.was a Spanish debt auction, but a lot of interest in it. By wi,

:07:14. > :07:19.baring in mind the bad news from Spain it may surprise people?

:07:19. > :07:24.why are investors so keen to buy up the debt. That is how a country

:07:24. > :07:28.raises money. They sell the debt. Giving the investors an IOU and

:07:28. > :07:33.there is a level of interest rate to take on board the debt. The

:07:33. > :07:37.interest rate was higher, but the reason that the demand was high,

:07:37. > :07:42.basically, investors believe that Spain will get a bail out in some

:07:42. > :07:51.for or another. It will get a bail out. That means buying Spanish

:07:51. > :07:57.government debt is not as risky as we thought. They raised over 2.2

:07:57. > :08:03.billion Euros, they paid just under 6.1%. That is a bit of an ouch.

:08:03. > :08:07.That is a five-year debt. So levels that look in the long-term

:08:07. > :08:12.unsustainable indeed, but all of this is coming off the back of the

:08:12. > :08:16.fact that today we are getting the first report. We have been waiting

:08:16. > :08:21.for the independent auditor report on the banking system. They have

:08:21. > :08:25.put the whole Spanish banking system under a stress test to look

:08:25. > :08:30.at all of the individual banks to tell us who big the whole is that

:08:30. > :08:36.must be filled. Some are saying it could be as much

:08:36. > :08:41.as 100 billion Euros. I was talking to an expert. He explained why this

:08:41. > :08:45.is so important this report. Well, I think that the reason they

:08:45. > :08:50.are important, the reason why a lot of investors are looking at them is

:08:50. > :08:54.that there is hope it will draw line in the sand in turn of

:08:54. > :08:57.figuring out how much of a black hole there is in the Spanish

:08:57. > :09:02.banking system and what it means for the public finances for the

:09:02. > :09:07.country as a whole. One of the reasons why since the announcement

:09:07. > :09:11.for the 100 billion potential rescue package, there was not a

:09:11. > :09:16.whole lot of positive sentiment coming from that is that there is a

:09:16. > :09:20.question of senior ority. So what does it mean for 100 billion of

:09:20. > :09:25.European money coming in? Does it mean that other holders are pushed

:09:25. > :09:35.out if they run into difficulties? Until the questions are clarified

:09:35. > :09:41.that will matter more than the numbers, like 100 billion, as has

:09:41. > :09:47.been suggested is on the table. Now, Cyprus could be the next EU

:09:47. > :09:52.country to get an emergency bail out from Brussels. They are looking

:09:52. > :09:59.to reimbers the national bank for the loss it is made on bad

:09:59. > :10:04.investments, mainly in Greece. That's the problem.

:10:04. > :10:08.A 40%-drop in orders. The customers are not paying bills on time, this

:10:08. > :10:11.is a typical story for a family business. This one makes pipes.

:10:11. > :10:16.It is another of Europe's failing economies.

:10:16. > :10:21.It is a fine line to walk. We are thinking that if things go well we

:10:21. > :10:26.may have to consider laying off some people so that we keep the

:10:26. > :10:32.operations running for the rest of the 165 personnel.

:10:32. > :10:35.Greece may be 800 kilometres to the west, but for the Greek Cypriots,

:10:35. > :10:39.contemplating their future, Greece and its bail out may as Welling

:10:39. > :10:43.next door. We know we are very lucky.

:10:43. > :10:48.But we are affiliated with the banks and everything, so it is

:10:48. > :10:56.trouble. It is hard. It is not good. Do you think that Cyprus will be

:10:56. > :11:00.next? I think it is. Greece's doubtful could prove

:11:00. > :11:04.Cyprus's. Cyprus has carried on buying Greek government bonds at

:11:04. > :11:07.more tempting rates of interest, but those in charge argue it is not

:11:07. > :11:11.their fault that they need foreign help now.

:11:11. > :11:15.I don't think it is a national embarrassment, the situation has

:11:15. > :11:21.come about as a result of the Greek situation. It is something that has

:11:21. > :11:26.happened for us, many miles away from our country, it is an external

:11:26. > :11:30.factor. The consensus is that an emergency

:11:30. > :11:33.foreign loan in the order of several billion Euros is vital to

:11:34. > :11:39.save the tiny EU country from mass unemployment.

:11:39. > :11:43.Here on the Greek side of what is Europe's last divided capital

:11:43. > :11:48.cities, the reminders of what is causing the problems is everywhere.

:11:48. > :11:54.Amongst the banks, there is a straightforward admission of going

:11:54. > :11:57.cap in hand to the government. We have taken the benefits of the

:11:57. > :12:03.Euro seriously. The responsibilities have been taken

:12:04. > :12:08.less seriously. Both as bank officials and as government

:12:08. > :12:16.officials. We are now paying a big price.

:12:16. > :12:19.Most visitors here are oblivious to Cyprus's imminent bankruptcy. Even

:12:19. > :12:26.the best-off, will be inadequate to pull the host country back from the

:12:26. > :12:31.economic brink. Now some of the other business

:12:31. > :12:33.stories making headlines: Apple has been ordered to pay damages to

:12:33. > :12:38.rival Samsung Electronics by a court in the Netherlands it is not

:12:38. > :12:43.clear how much, but the court said that Apple had infringed a patent

:12:43. > :12:49.held by Samsung relating into the way that phones and tablet PCs

:12:49. > :12:56.connect to the internet. There was a fine of close to $2.5 in

:12:56. > :13:05.Australia for the claim on 4G capabilities on the iPad.

:13:05. > :13:10.Larry Ellison has bought the Hawaiian island of Lanai. T Harare

:13:10. > :13:16.is a keen Saylor, thought to be part of the reason why he bought

:13:16. > :13:23.the largest island in -- the sixth largest island in the Hawaiian

:13:23. > :13:29.chain. Starbucks is to open a tea chain. Based on Tazo teas bought in

:13:29. > :13:34.1999. The new store is to sell more than 80 types of loose leaf tea,

:13:34. > :13:39.say that three times, that is a tough one. I don't know about the

:13:39. > :13:45.island story, I would not mind being able to boy an island, but

:13:45. > :13:49.now this is new news, Air France, apparently cutting about 5,000 jobs

:13:49. > :13:56.by 2014. Tough times for the airline industries. More on that

:13:56. > :14:03.later. You are watching BBC World News.

:14:03. > :14:07.Still to come : Launching the London 2012 Olympics Festival. A

:14:07. > :14:11.cultural celebration ahead of the Olympic Games.

:14:11. > :14:15.New York city is basking in a heatwave as it welcomes the first

:14:15. > :14:19.official day of summer. Temperatures are predicted to be

:14:19. > :14:24.record levels for this time of the year, reaching up to 36 Celsius.

:14:24. > :14:28.We have this report. As the temperature rose New Yorkers

:14:28. > :14:32.slowed down. And it is expected to get hotter in

:14:32. > :14:36.the city. Temperatures are predicted to reach

:14:36. > :14:41.36 Celsius. It could abpossible record. The

:14:41. > :14:45.average for this time of year is a much cooler 27 Celsius.

:14:45. > :14:48.Tourists and the locals alike have been finding new ways to enjoy the

:14:48. > :14:52.city. We used the fountain to cool off

:14:52. > :14:57.and hit the playing for a little while and hopefully he will go down

:14:57. > :15:04.for a nap, as I have work to do m We are happy to find the fountain.

:15:04. > :15:08.It is only 12 noon and it is hot. It is hot, but it is nice, but it's

:15:08. > :15:12.cool. In the Times Square, the

:15:12. > :15:18.temperatures did not put off the thousands who atented a huge

:15:18. > :15:21.outdoor yoga class. We are doing bick ram yoga, so it

:15:21. > :15:25.qualifies for the temperatures, it is really great. I never thought I

:15:25. > :15:29.would be a part of this. It is amazing.

:15:29. > :15:33.The United States National Weather Service has issued a heat warning

:15:33. > :15:38.until Thursday night. Public cooling centres have been set up

:15:38. > :15:48.for people without airconditon, but many have found their own way of

:15:48. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:52.Thick committee of the lower a house of the US Congress has voted

:15:52. > :15:57.to charge Attorney-General Eric Holder with contempt. The vote,

:15:57. > :16:02.which broke down along party lines, found he had not co-operated fully

:16:02. > :16:05.about turning over documents about a gun-running operation on the US

:16:05. > :16:09.Mexico border. The full House is expected to vote on whether to

:16:09. > :16:13.formally charged Mr Holder. The former Prime Minister of

:16:14. > :16:17.Romania, Adrian Nastase, has shot himself hours after the Supreme

:16:17. > :16:22.Court rejected his appeal against a two-year jail sentence on

:16:22. > :16:25.corruption charges. It is reported he shot himself in the neck when

:16:25. > :16:29.police came to his house to take him to prison. He is in hospital

:16:29. > :16:39.and his condition is unclear. State television in Syria has

:16:39. > :16:46.confirmed that a plane has landed at the Jordanian military airport.

:16:46. > :16:51.The Jordanian minister says he has asked for asylum.

:16:51. > :16:57.You are watching BBC world news with me, Adam Parsons. These are

:16:57. > :17:01.our headlines: An Indonesian air force plane has crashed into houses.

:17:01. > :17:07.And a verdict is expected in the trial of the man accused of making

:17:07. > :17:12.the Ollie bombs. In Norway, the prosecution into the

:17:12. > :17:16.hearing of the self-confessed killer Anders Breivik has begun.

:17:17. > :17:22.The 33-year-old went on a bombing and shooting rampage last July

:17:22. > :17:26.killing 77 people. After 10 weeks of testimony, judges will decide

:17:26. > :17:29.whether the 33-year-old is sane or not, to determine whether he will

:17:29. > :17:34.be sent to prison or to a mental institution. The prosecution is

:17:34. > :17:38.expected to announce this afternoon which verdict he is calling for.

:17:38. > :17:42.Richard Galpin has been covering the trial. I spoke to him a while

:17:42. > :17:46.ago about what the large turnout at the court are expecting to hear.

:17:46. > :17:51.The key thing people are listening out for is what the prosecution say

:17:51. > :17:55.on the key question of this trial on whether he is deemed to be sane

:17:55. > :18:00.or insane. When they made their indictment 10 weeks ago, when the

:18:00. > :18:05.trial began, the prosecution said they believe that Anders Breivik

:18:05. > :18:11.was insane. This makes an enormous difference. If he is found to be

:18:11. > :18:16.insane he would not go to prison. He would be treated in a secure

:18:16. > :18:19.psychiatric ward. But during this trial, we have heard from a large

:18:19. > :18:24.number of psychologists and psychiatrists and the vast majority

:18:24. > :18:29.of them have said that having observed him they believe he is

:18:29. > :18:34.saying and therefore should be sentenced to many, many years in

:18:35. > :18:39.prison. The question is whether the prosecution will take that on board

:18:39. > :18:42.and the change their indictment and also declare that they believe

:18:42. > :18:46.Anders Breivik is insane. That would put a lot of pressure on the

:18:47. > :18:54.judges who have to make the final decision as to whether he should go

:18:54. > :18:58.to a psychiatric ward or prison. word we just heard was traumatic.

:18:58. > :19:05.The impression we get is this is a country which has been traumatised

:19:05. > :19:11.by this crime? Completely. It has been an unprecedented crime in its

:19:11. > :19:17.scale, the way it was carried out, the fact that so many of the

:19:17. > :19:22.victims where extremely young. The shooting on the island of Utoeya

:19:22. > :19:26.where 69 people were killed, these were all young people attending a

:19:26. > :19:32.summer camp. The youngest person was just 14 years old. The vast

:19:32. > :19:36.majority of them were shot through the head.

:19:37. > :19:40.An arrest warrant has been issued for the man who was tipped to

:19:40. > :19:46.become Pakistan's next Prime Minister. Makhdoom Shahabuddin is a

:19:46. > :19:50.senior figure in the Pakistan People's Party. The arrest warrant

:19:50. > :19:54.is linked to a case into the illegal importation of the drug

:19:54. > :19:58.ephedrine when he was Health Minister. The BBC's Aleem Maqbool

:19:58. > :20:06.is in Islamabad and gave us the background to the case. This is

:20:06. > :20:10.linked to a case when Makhdoom Shahabuddin was the Health Minister

:20:10. > :20:14.where by this drug ephedrine, which can be imported to certain levels,

:20:14. > :20:19.the quota was exceeded and large amounts of this drug where imported

:20:19. > :20:24.into Pakistan. It can be used legally to produced drugs for

:20:24. > :20:27.asthma and so on but can also be used in the projection --

:20:27. > :20:32.production of narcotics. This case has been hanging over Makhdoom

:20:32. > :20:37.Shahabuddin for some time. But this has just happened on the very day

:20:37. > :20:40.or the 24 hours when it has been announced that he is the leading

:20:40. > :20:47.candidate to take over as the new Prime Minister. There are some who

:20:47. > :20:50.are saying well, all of these ministers deserve it for

:20:50. > :20:54.embezzlement and if he has been involved in a case like this then

:20:54. > :20:58.he deserves being arrested. But there are others who see this as a

:20:58. > :21:02.vendetta by the courts and the army potentially in the background,

:21:02. > :21:09.against the ruling People's Party. I believe there is another

:21:09. > :21:13.candidate who was also involved? Well, the next candidate, the

:21:14. > :21:21.reserve candidate has also got an investigation hanging over his head.

:21:21. > :21:25.This is over a separate case why he was the power Minister and

:21:25. > :21:28.allegations that he made an awful lot of money. There are a lot of

:21:28. > :21:31.people who are seeing this as involvement and political

:21:31. > :21:36.motivation by the courts and the army in the background. They have

:21:36. > :21:40.just moved the former Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, on a

:21:40. > :21:44.charge which again the People's Party says was politically
