:00:00. > :00:16.This is BBC World News. We have been bringing you special coverage on the

:00:17. > :00:19.BBC of the Oscar Pistorius trial. The court is adjourning for a

:00:20. > :00:28.five-minute break. We have been hearing in the last few minutes from

:00:29. > :00:37.Oscar Pistorius about the day, the run-up to the of Reeva Steenkamp,

:00:38. > :00:41.describing an evening at home with his girlfriend, having dinner, how

:00:42. > :00:45.they were then in the bedroom. It was the day before Valentine's Day

:00:46. > :00:55.and he described a valentines gift he had bought for her and one which

:00:56. > :00:57.she had bought for him. She actually opened -- he actually opened at last

:00:58. > :01:03.year, after the shooting. Getting very emotional at the end. We have

:01:04. > :01:06.been hearing the defence lawyer questioning Oscar Pistorius. It

:01:07. > :01:18.started a couple of hours ago, in fact, with Oscar Pistorius reading

:01:19. > :01:24.out a number of Whatsapp read messages that the couple had sent

:01:25. > :01:27.each other. Relationship details coming out. A lot of loving messages

:01:28. > :01:33.between the two them, also interesting messages from Reeva

:01:34. > :01:38.Steenkamp, where she said, I am scared of you at times. She was

:01:39. > :01:46.clearly worried about the jealousy and possessiveness of Oscar

:01:47. > :01:49.Pistorius. Detailing a number of conversations they have had. In one

:01:50. > :01:55.text message, she had to ask for permission to wear a leopard rent

:01:56. > :01:59.dress. The pair had been dating for about three months when Reeva

:02:00. > :02:05.Steenkamp was shot. -- leopard print dress. The defence lawyer clearly

:02:06. > :02:08.tried to establish that this was a loving relationship, although

:02:09. > :02:12.clearly one where there was some tension. Oscar Pistorius described

:02:13. > :02:23.how they have both come out of quite difficult relationships. We will

:02:24. > :02:26.come back to that trial at Pretoria, the Oscar Pistorius trial, it will

:02:27. > :02:34.resume in the next few minutes. We will return to South Africa for that

:02:35. > :02:39.court case as soon as we can. We are going to bring you a quick

:02:40. > :02:43.look at some of the other news today on BBC World. Russia has warned

:02:44. > :02:46.Ukraine to stop military preparations in the south and east

:02:47. > :02:50.of the country, saying they could start a civil war. Ukrainian

:02:51. > :02:57.authorities have arrested dozens of people in Kharkiv after pro-Russian

:02:58. > :03:03.asked -- activists declared independence. There has been a wave

:03:04. > :03:08.of demonstrations, with protesters seizing buildings in Kharkiv,

:03:09. > :03:12.Donetsk and Luhansk. Ukraine said that Russia would be making an

:03:13. > :03:16.historic mistake of it intervened. This was the scene in Kharkiv, where

:03:17. > :03:19.the Ukrainian authorities say they have since retaken a building and

:03:20. > :03:25.arrested 70 people. The acting President said that they would be

:03:26. > :03:28.treated as terrorists and criminals. Russia has warned Ukraine to stop

:03:29. > :03:31.military activity. Steve Rosenberg has been monitoring events for us

:03:32. > :03:36.today. In Donetsk, talks have been going on

:03:37. > :03:39.through the night between pro-Russian activists that had

:03:40. > :03:43.seized the governor 's building here, and the authorities. There are

:03:44. > :03:45.reports that some agreement has been reached, that there would be no

:03:46. > :03:51.attempt to reclaim the building by force. That is as long as the

:03:52. > :03:56.activists barricaded inside agreed to give up any weapons they have.

:03:57. > :04:00.Meanwhile, the war of words between East and West over Ukraine

:04:01. > :04:05.continues. A spokesman for the White House in Washington warned Russia

:04:06. > :04:11.against overtly or covertly moving into eastern Ukraine and claimed

:04:12. > :04:14.there was strong evidence to suggest that some of the pro-Russian

:04:15. > :04:20.activists here in eastern Ukraine had been paid and were not local.

:04:21. > :04:25.Russia disputes that and rejects accusations that it is orchestrating

:04:26. > :04:33.instability here in eastern Ukraine and fanning the flames of seven test

:04:34. > :04:38.sentiment. It has accused the West of the responsible for the

:04:39. > :04:43.instability. The West forced Ukraine, according to Moscow, to

:04:44. > :04:48.choose between East and West. Well, the latest developments in

:04:49. > :04:52.Ukraine are causing trouble in Parliament. Deputies in Ukraine's

:04:53. > :04:57.Parliament ended up in a brawl today, as disagreement broke out

:04:58. > :04:59.when deputies from the far right were accused of playing into

:05:00. > :05:06.Russia's hands by adopting extreme tactics. The disagreement turned

:05:07. > :05:09.into quite a brawl. Teams searching for the missing

:05:10. > :05:13.Malaysian plane say they have not picked up any more signals which

:05:14. > :05:17.could taken from the black box playing locator. Two septal signals

:05:18. > :05:19.were located over the weekend, but they are waiting for more contact

:05:20. > :05:26.before deploying an underwater search craft.

:05:27. > :05:31.As we are now looking for the locator beacon underwater, we still

:05:32. > :05:34.maintain the surface search for any debris that might be out there. We

:05:35. > :05:40.continue to be optimistic. The longer this goes, the harder it

:05:41. > :05:44.gets. We have eliminated a lot of the area and we are continuing to

:05:45. > :05:49.search the area every day. British television presenter and model

:05:50. > :05:52.Peaches Geldof has died suddenly at the age of 25.

:05:53. > :06:04.Police say her death is being treated as unexplained. She was the

:06:05. > :06:09.daughter of a singer and founder of Bob Geldof. Her mother died of a

:06:10. > :06:13.heroin overdose. This report contains flash photography.

:06:14. > :06:19.Born into fame, no stranger to tragedy. Peaches Geldof, a daughter,

:06:20. > :06:26.sister, wife and mother, now dead at just 25. A private ambulance leaving

:06:27. > :06:29.her home on Monday evening. Police had been called their earlier in the

:06:30. > :06:36.day. Her death, they say, was not suspicious, but it was sudden and

:06:37. > :06:42.unexplained. Her father, Bob Geldof, issued a statement. In it, he said,

:06:43. > :06:51.she was the wildest, funniest, cleverest, wittiest and most bonkers

:06:52. > :06:55.of all of us. Writing 'was' destroys me afresh. What a beautiful child.

:06:56. > :07:01.How is it possible we will not see her again? Born in 1989, Peaches

:07:02. > :07:05.Geldof was the second daughter of Bob Geldof and Paula Yates. She said

:07:06. > :07:11.her early childhood was idyllic. But then came her parents' divorce and

:07:12. > :07:15.her mother's death from a heroin overdose when she was just 11. In

:07:16. > :07:20.later life, she forged a media career, married twice. She had two

:07:21. > :07:25.sons. The teenage wild child, becoming a champion of motherhood.

:07:26. > :07:27.Her husband, Tom, said, my beloved white Peaches was adored by myself

:07:28. > :07:41.and her two sons. -- wife. Her last message, a photo on social

:07:42. > :07:50.media. The caption said, me and my mum.

:07:51. > :07:59.We are just going to go straight back to the trial of Oscar

:08:00. > :08:18.Pistorius. The court has resumed in Pretoria.

:08:19. > :08:28.For court purposes, we have the exact length and so on. It is

:08:29. > :08:30.measured. It will be relevant for the second part of the evidence as

:08:31. > :08:52.well. Also for the second part, we will

:08:53. > :08:56.ask if he can remain in the present clothing. That is for the

:08:57. > :09:08.demonstrations. We stopped at the point where you

:09:09. > :09:12.said you fell asleep. Can you take it from there? What time was it more

:09:13. > :09:34.or less when he fell asleep? It was about just after 9pm. Around

:09:35. > :09:46.10pm. Can I ask you to raise your voice a bit? It was between 9pm and

:09:47. > :10:00.10pm. Can you go from there? Did you wake up again later on? I woke up in

:10:01. > :10:04.the early hours of 14th of February. It was extremely warm in my room. I

:10:05. > :10:18.sat up in bed. I noticed that the fans were still

:10:19. > :10:34.running and that the door was still open. Although the lights had been

:10:35. > :10:39.switched off. Reeva was still awake. She was not sleeping. She rolled

:10:40. > :10:46.over to me and said, can't you sleep? I said, no, I can't. I've got

:10:47. > :10:53.out of my side of the bed. I walked around the bed. I was holding onto

:10:54. > :11:03.the foot of the bed with my left hand. I've got to wear the fans

:11:04. > :11:08.were. I took the small fan, the floor fan. I'd put it inside the

:11:09. > :11:27.room the fans were still running. The

:11:28. > :11:32.fans were still running at the time. I then proceeded to close the

:11:33. > :11:46.sliding doors and locks them. I then drew the curtains. And the blinds? I

:11:47. > :11:48.do not remember. I just grabbed and closed. I'd probably close them both

:11:49. > :12:22.but I remember closing the curtains. I came into the room at this point.

:12:23. > :12:29.The only bit of light that was in the room was a little light on the

:12:30. > :12:41.amplifier weathered TV cabinet was. There was a blue light. -- where the

:12:42. > :12:50.television cabinet was. There was a pair of blue jeans on the floor. I

:12:51. > :12:52.picked them up. I was going to place them over the amplifier, over the

:12:53. > :13:21.light. It was at this point I heard a

:13:22. > :13:27.window open in the bathroom. It sounded like the Windows sliding

:13:28. > :13:32.open. I could hear the window hit the frame, as if it had slipped to a

:13:33. > :13:43.point where it could not slide any more. It is a wooden frame window?

:13:44. > :13:47.They are all wooden frames. That is the window referred to in the

:13:48. > :14:14.evidence of the photographer. That is correct.

:14:15. > :14:26.What did you think at the time, Mr Pistorius? That is the moment when

:14:27. > :14:36.everything changed will stop I thought there was a burglar who was

:14:37. > :14:41.gaining entry into my home. I was on the side of the room where you first

:14:42. > :14:51.have to cross the passage that leads to the bathroom. I think, initially,

:14:52. > :14:58.I just froze. I heard this noise and interpreted it as being someone

:14:59. > :15:05.climbing into the bathroom. There is a passageway but there is no door.

:15:06. > :15:15.There is a toilet door but there is no barrier between me and the

:15:16. > :15:22.bathroom. It is one room. I thought that if somebody were at the window,

:15:23. > :15:28.the entrance to the passage, three or four metres, they could be there

:15:29. > :15:35.any moment. The first thing that ran through my mind was I needed to arm

:15:36. > :16:00.myself. I needed to protect Reeva and I. I needed to get my gun.

:16:01. > :16:09.I was looking down the passage, scared that the person was going to

:16:10. > :16:16.come out. I rushed as quick as I could. I could not see anyone in the

:16:17. > :16:25.room. I ran my hand up in front of me, at times touching the floor. I

:16:26. > :16:30.went along side my bed. I grabbed my firearm from underneath the bed. It

:16:31. > :16:44.had a canvas holster on it. I took it off the holster. At that point, I

:16:45. > :16:49.wanted to put myself to get back to where the passage was an put myself

:16:50. > :16:55.between the person that had gained access to my house and Reeva. Before

:16:56. > :17:04.the passage wall, I can remember slowing down. I was scared that this

:17:05. > :17:13.person, during the time I had left the amp, they could possibly have

:17:14. > :17:18.been in the closet passage. I slowed down and I had my firearm extended

:17:19. > :17:24.in front of me. Just as I left my bed, I whispered Ford Reeva to get

:17:25. > :17:59.down and phoned the police. Where I entered the passage where

:18:00. > :18:02.the closet is to the bathroom, it was at that point that I was just

:18:03. > :18:06.overcome with fear and I started screaming and shouting for deep

:18:07. > :18:13.burglar or the intruders to get out of my house. I shouted for Reeva to

:18:14. > :18:18.get on the floor and phoned the police. I screamed at the people to

:18:19. > :18:37.get out. I slowly made my way down the

:18:38. > :18:40.passage. I was constantly aware of the threat that these people or

:18:41. > :18:51.persons could come at me at any time. I did not have my legs on.

:18:52. > :19:09.Just before I got to the wall, where the tiles starts in the bathroom, I

:19:10. > :19:11.was worried to shout. I was worried they would know where I was and I

:19:12. > :19:28.could get shot. Just before I got to the passage of

:19:29. > :19:34.the bathroom, I heard a door slam. That could only have been the toilet

:19:35. > :19:36.door. I could not see into the bathroom at this point but I could

:19:37. > :19:52.hear the door slam. If I may stop you... I want to speak

:19:53. > :19:55.about the passage.
