:00:08. > :00:14.Hello. This is BBC World News. Our top stories:

:00:15. > :00:21.Twin bombings hit the Nigerian city of Jos, and 17 more have been killed

:00:22. > :00:27.today in the north-east of the country. Egypt's ousted President

:00:28. > :00:30.Hosni Mubarak is sentenced to three years in jail for stealing public

:00:31. > :00:35.funds. Too wide to ride, France spends

:00:36. > :00:46.billions on 2000 new trains that don't fit the platforms.

:00:47. > :00:47.Also we bring you a copyright row over the led Zeppelin classic

:00:48. > :01:05.stairway to heaven. The bodies of at least 118 people

:01:06. > :01:08.have now been recovered from the sites of twin bombings in

:01:09. > :01:13.the central Nigerian city of Jos. Today there's been another deadly

:01:14. > :01:16.attack in the north-eastern city of Alagarno in Borno state,

:01:17. > :01:22.with 17 reported dead. It comes after those two blasts

:01:23. > :01:26.in Jos which happened just 20 minutes apart, near

:01:27. > :01:30.the city's Terminus market and the University of Jos Teaching Hospital,

:01:31. > :01:33.with fears that more bodies may Boko Haram -

:01:34. > :01:47.who were responsible for kidnapping more than 200 schoolgirls - are

:01:48. > :02:05.the main suspects for this attack. This area was packed with people.

:02:06. > :02:09.Many of the victims were traders selling from the market stalls, and

:02:10. > :02:16.their customers. The aim was clearly to kill as many people as possible.

:02:17. > :02:19.Minutes after the first last, the second bomb was detonated as victims

:02:20. > :02:24.were being taken to the nearby hospital. Body parts were strewn

:02:25. > :02:28.across the area. There was panic as emergency services try to help the

:02:29. > :02:35.dozens of injured, many had open wounds, fractures and burns. The

:02:36. > :02:44.number of people I saw that were in pieces, they were being taken out.

:02:45. > :02:51.number of people I saw that were in Although it is not known who carried

:02:52. > :02:55.out the attack, Boko Haram has targeted Jos city before, bombing

:02:56. > :03:00.churches in what was seen as an effort to

:03:01. > :03:03.churches in what was seen as an the middle belt of Nigeria has been

:03:04. > :03:07.the scene of frequent outbreaks of violence. They are often described

:03:08. > :03:13.as religious clashes. They are in fact rooted in on petition for land,

:03:14. > :03:17.resources and political power. The twin bombings follow blasts in the

:03:18. > :03:21.capital, Abuja, as well as a northern city. The Islamist

:03:22. > :03:26.extremists are still holding more than 200 schoolgirls they abducted

:03:27. > :03:29.over five weeks ago. At a recent summit, several Western countries

:03:30. > :03:34.pledged to help the Nigerian government find the girls. It is

:03:35. > :03:39.operating clearly as an Al-Qaeda organisation. It can better be

:03:40. > :03:43.described as Al-Qaeda in West and Central Africa. We will work

:03:44. > :03:46.together to make sure we root out these terrorists -- West and Central

:03:47. > :03:52.Africa. Large areas appear virtually

:03:53. > :03:59.off-limits to the Nigerian military. We can go live now to the city

:04:00. > :04:20.of Jos in central Nigeria How big a place is Alagarno and how

:04:21. > :04:23.devastating is the attack? The attack is devastating because

:04:24. > :04:28.according to a resident, all the houses were razed to the ground. The

:04:29. > :04:32.militants went in last night and it took them over for hours, they burnt

:04:33. > :04:37.down almost everything that is standing in the town. They told us

:04:38. > :04:43.that people have fled into the surrounding bushes, and they killed

:04:44. > :04:48.17 people in the town. They also took foodstuff out of the town and

:04:49. > :04:54.went away with the foodstuff and burnt some of the foodstuff that

:04:55. > :04:58.they couldn't carry. We understand there is attack after attack in the

:04:59. > :05:05.north-eastern corner. That is Boko Haram stronghold territory. Jos is a

:05:06. > :05:08.different picture, it is in the heart of the country and has been

:05:09. > :05:14.relatively peaceful for the last couple of years. Indeed, Jos is a

:05:15. > :05:17.different place, it is not in the geopolitical north-eastern part of

:05:18. > :05:23.Nigeria, it is in the middle belt of Nigeria. Activities of Boko Haram

:05:24. > :05:26.have been confined to north-eastern Nigeria, even though they were able

:05:27. > :05:35.in the past to come out of the north-east and attack other places

:05:36. > :05:38.like Abuja. And now Jos. Jos has had relative piece for some time but the

:05:39. > :05:46.twin bombings has shattered that relative peace because this is a

:05:47. > :05:51.massive bomb the has taken place -- bombing that has taken place.

:05:52. > :05:54.According to the management agency in Nigeria 118 people were killed

:05:55. > :05:59.and scores of others were injured. Officials still expect other dead

:06:00. > :06:05.bodies out of the rubble of the building but when -- buildings that

:06:06. > :06:09.went down. Yesterday the emergency services worked through the night in

:06:10. > :06:16.order to dowse the buildings that were on fire, because of the

:06:17. > :06:20.bombings that took place yesterday. President Goodluck Jonathan is

:06:21. > :06:26.condemning these latest attacks. Is there any indication that the

:06:27. > :06:35.military is becoming any more responsive or successful in dealing

:06:36. > :07:12.with Boko Haram? Unfortunately, the military, according to many

:07:13. > :07:20.Nigerians here, they are not doing berry well in trying to contain the

:07:21. > :07:22.violence. If you look at what has happened in north-eastern Nigeria --

:07:23. > :07:26.not doing very well. There is no happened in north-eastern Nigeria --

:07:27. > :07:26.news about the search, even though the President is saying this search

:07:27. > :07:26.is continuing. Other parts have been the President is saying this search

:07:27. > :07:26.question, where is the next place going to be attacked?

:07:27. > :07:26.Russia has signed a long-awaited deal to supply China with gas,

:07:27. > :07:31.No pricing details have been given, but correspondents say it could be

:07:32. > :07:34.worth hundreds of billions of dollars over 30 years.

:07:35. > :07:38.The news comes on the second day of a visit to China by President Putin.

:07:39. > :07:42.The Head of the Thai Army has been holding talks with the key players

:07:43. > :07:44.in the country's political crisis, following Tuesday's declaration of

:07:45. > :07:47.martial law. The outcome of the talks has just

:07:48. > :07:50.been described as 'inconclusive' - and the Army Chief has now called

:07:51. > :07:52.for another meeting of Thailand's political leaders, on Thursday.

:07:53. > :07:54.Officials in Pakistan say 32 militants have

:07:55. > :08:02.been killed after fighter jets bombed suspected militant positions

:08:03. > :08:05.in the north of the country - close to the border with Afghanistan.

:08:06. > :08:08.Senior officials in Miran Shah says the targets were

:08:09. > :08:11.militant hideouts in the tribal region of North Waziristan -

:08:12. > :08:16.and 'important commanders' in the insurgency have been killed.

:08:17. > :08:18.India's Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi has invited his

:08:19. > :08:21.Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to his inauguration ceremony.

:08:22. > :08:24.A spokesman for Mr Modi's BJP party said Mr Sharif was one

:08:25. > :08:27.of several regional heads of government who've been asked to

:08:28. > :08:32.It's thought to be the first such invitation to be

:08:33. > :08:35.offered to a Pakistani Prime Minister - so far, there's been no

:08:36. > :08:45.Egypt's ousted President Hosni Mubarak,

:08:46. > :08:48.has just been given a sentence of three years for embezzlement.

:08:49. > :08:50.His sons have been sentenced to four years.

:08:51. > :08:53.Prosecutors say they stole millions of dollars of public funds,

:08:54. > :08:55.earmarked for the maintenance of presidential palaces.

:08:56. > :09:07.With me now is Mohamed Yehia, editor of BBC Arabic.

:09:08. > :09:22.What are they saying the money was sent spent on? Hosni Mubarak and his

:09:23. > :09:28.sons were using public funds to refurbish private residences. In

:09:29. > :09:35.Cairo and other cities in Egypt. They were doing this at will. The

:09:36. > :09:39.judge today, when he issued his verdict, he had very harsh words to

:09:40. > :09:46.Hosni Mubarak and his son, telling him that instead of protecting

:09:47. > :09:50.public interests, you said yourself free and your sons without impunity,

:09:51. > :10:01.stealing public money. For someone who was only ousted three years

:10:02. > :10:11.ago, things have changed very fast in Egypt, it is fair to say. Is

:10:12. > :10:18.there really that much interest, resonance about an issue like this?

:10:19. > :10:22.There is interest, you have to keep in mind we have another president

:10:23. > :10:24.who is being tried, Mohamed Morsi, also accused of embezzlement and

:10:25. > :10:42.killing protesters and espionage, serious charges. Outside the court

:10:43. > :10:54.there were a handful of people making protests. It suggests that on

:10:55. > :10:59.a day-to-day level, people are getting on with life. When the trial

:11:00. > :11:08.of Mubarak started after being ousted in 2011, there were hundreds

:11:09. > :11:15.of people, clashes of the people, and bit by bit, the interest in

:11:16. > :11:20.people in going to the courthouse has waned. The French train operator

:11:21. > :11:27.has discovered that hundreds of its new trains, ordered at huge expense,

:11:28. > :11:29.are too wide for the station that forms in the region. It is Anna

:11:30. > :11:30.Berecz in blunder which has already cost -- it is an embarrassing

:11:31. > :11:36.blunder which has already cost the operator millions of pounds. If this

:11:37. > :11:43.was the 1st of April we would know this was a joke. Yes, some very red

:11:44. > :11:47.faces in France. The finger of blame is being apportioned in all

:11:48. > :11:51.directions. SNCF had ordered hundreds of these trends for the

:11:52. > :11:54.regions to try to get people back onto the trains, they are more

:11:55. > :12:01.comfortable and spacious. The problem was that the rail operator

:12:02. > :12:05.had given the measurements for the gap between the platforms which

:12:06. > :12:07.appertain to stations built 30 years ago. Unfortunately in the provinces,

:12:08. > :12:13.a lot of train stations are a lot older than that. Apparently these

:12:14. > :12:17.new trains are only about ten centimetres bigger on each side, but

:12:18. > :12:22.it might only be a matter of centimetres, meters, miles of

:12:23. > :12:26.platform up and down the country now has to be adjusted to get these

:12:27. > :12:30.trains in. There are all sorts of questions being asked about the

:12:31. > :12:35.disruption and also who is going to pay for it. Who carries the can for

:12:36. > :12:51.this? Is there a political repercussion? The regions are saying

:12:52. > :12:55.they will not pay a cent. SNCF say it is down to the rail operator.

:12:56. > :13:03.They have said they did realise a bit too late but under European

:13:04. > :13:05.rules, they need to modernise stations and have factored this into

:13:06. > :13:06.the long-term plan. I think the issue is

:13:07. > :13:10.stations and have factored this into the long-term plan. that TGV, the

:13:11. > :13:14.main rail network, has been much admired around the world and they

:13:15. > :13:20.spend a lot of money on it. Getting up and down France and to the big

:13:21. > :13:21.cities across the country, it is pretty straightforward. They have

:13:22. > :13:25.not spent much money on the regional pretty straightforward. They have

:13:26. > :13:30.network and they are paying the cost. I think in a way, RSS

:13:31. > :13:31.network and they are paying the right, the platforms

:13:32. > :13:35.network and they are paying the adjusting but perhaps they did not

:13:36. > :13:42.network and they are paying the bank on adjusting them at the same

:13:43. > :13:45.time. Thank you for being with us. Still to come,

:13:46. > :13:57.time. Thank you for being with us. Tara, the hero cat, chasing

:13:58. > :13:59.There have been further promises of international assistance for Bosnia

:14:00. > :14:04.and Serbia, as the two countries clear up after devastating floods,

:14:05. > :14:16.An EU commissioner is in Belgrade to discuss the delivery of aid.

:14:17. > :14:25.This Bosnian town shows all that is left. Emergency teams arrived to

:14:26. > :14:28.deliver food. They were called upon to make this rescue. A

:14:29. > :14:32.three-month-old baby is called up into the helicopter by a soldier,

:14:33. > :14:39.one of so many extraordinary stories to emerge from the unprecedented

:14:40. > :14:43.flooding here. Neighbouring Serbia is observing three days of mourning

:14:44. > :14:48.after the country experienced the worst flooding in more than a

:14:49. > :14:52.century. The Serbian Prime Minister said an EU aid package would not be

:14:53. > :15:01.enough to solve the country 's problems.

:15:02. > :15:05.TRANSLATION: We qualify for financial support. Without any doubt

:15:06. > :15:17.it will not problems by taking help from someone

:15:18. > :15:21.else 's pocket. Where the flooding has receded, this is what is left.

:15:22. > :15:27.Homes and possessions are sodden with contaminated water. In Bosnia,

:15:28. > :15:29.the disaster has reawakened a problem from the country

:15:30. > :15:31.the disaster has reawakened a with fears thousands of landmines

:15:32. > :15:35.the disaster has reawakened a from the civil war in the 90s have

:15:36. > :15:37.been dislodged. The greatest challenge now is stopping the spread

:15:38. > :15:41.of disease, challenge now is stopping the spread

:15:42. > :15:47.of animal carcasses now rotting in the floodwater. With so many people

:15:48. > :15:54.still stranded and without clean water, and whole towns, villages and

:15:55. > :15:54.roads still submerged, the full scale of this devastating disaster

:15:55. > :16:21.is still unclear. Twin bombings hit the Nigerian city

:16:22. > :16:25.of Jos. There has been another attack in the north-east of the

:16:26. > :16:26.country. Hosni Mubarak is sentenced to three years in jail for stealing

:16:27. > :16:31.public funds. With a day to go before the European

:16:32. > :16:34.elections, the former Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has

:16:35. > :16:37.been talking about those bunga bunga parties, his working relationship

:16:38. > :16:39.with German Chancellor Angela Mr Berlusconi,

:16:40. > :16:45.who's carrying out community service after being convicted of tax fraud,

:16:46. > :16:52.told the BBC's Jeremy Paxman that the Euro could collapse,

:16:53. > :17:10.without a radical shake-up. We need to radically change the

:17:11. > :17:16.situation in Europe. For example, the fact that the UK is not in the

:17:17. > :17:20.Eurozone and we are is a complete disaster. We need radical changes,

:17:21. > :17:25.otherwise the economic situation will force us and other European

:17:26. > :17:33.countries to abandon the euro and go back to our national currencies.

:17:34. > :17:42.The European Central Bank is supposed to fight inflation. It is a

:17:43. > :17:50.central bank like the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England or the

:17:51. > :17:55.bank of Japan. What does it need to do? Firstly, it needs to guarantee

:17:56. > :18:00.the debt of the euro countries and, secondly, to print money when needed

:18:01. > :18:04.for those countries that cannot pay their debts. Do you have a

:18:05. > :18:16.particular problem with Angela Merkel?

:18:17. > :18:24.No, I have never had any problems with Angela Merkel. In 20 years of

:18:25. > :18:28.politics I have never insulted anyone. This has been made up by

:18:29. > :18:39.someone who wanted to turn Angela against me. I was not an easy person

:18:40. > :18:44.to deal with. I was quite tough. I had the courage to oppose some of

:18:45. > :18:54.the proposals made by Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy. It is

:18:55. > :18:58.unfortunate that, as far as the rest of the world is concerned, your

:18:59. > :19:03.reputation is all about your private life. It is about corruption and

:19:04. > :19:17.unpaid taxes and bungle bungle parties. What do you think about

:19:18. > :19:21.that? -- Tex three. The bunga bunga accusations were the most amazing

:19:22. > :19:27.things. They manipulated reality. Luckily, I am a strong person and I

:19:28. > :19:37.was able to take it. I want to go down in history as the country. As

:19:38. > :19:38.my legacy, a conservative centre-right government protecting

:19:39. > :19:44.Italy from a potential dictator. That was former

:19:45. > :19:47.Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, talking about seeing

:19:48. > :19:50.off political challengers, such as the comedian-turned-politician

:19:51. > :19:51.Beppe Grillo. Grillo leads

:19:52. > :19:53.an anti-establishment group known It became a force in Italian

:19:54. > :19:56.politics at the last general election

:19:57. > :20:24.when it took 25% of the vote. Meet Italy 's angry big eight.

:20:25. > :20:36.Activists from the Five Star Brigade. They demand sacrifices from

:20:37. > :20:44.the poor. The guiding star, Beppe Grillo. He railed at the waist and

:20:45. > :20:48.bureaucracy. This echoes the view of Italy where there are MPs in

:20:49. > :20:57.Parliament. Sometimes they resort to shock tactics. The movement sees the

:20:58. > :21:04.entire political establishment as deeply corrupt and failing. Here, in

:21:05. > :21:08.Rome, and in Brussels, the citizen activists have focused serious

:21:09. > :21:14.attention on all that is wrong with this country 's ruling class. There

:21:15. > :21:21.is frustration and anger because of how the system has been conducted.

:21:22. > :21:28.That is why there is anger and miss guidance of feelings. We want to try

:21:29. > :21:36.these feelings in a suggestion, in a positive way. Activists have

:21:37. > :21:40.succeeded in shaking up Italy 's rotten political system. The

:21:41. > :21:43.weaknesses of the movement have also been exposed. Critics accuse the

:21:44. > :21:47.leadership of having an authoritarian streak. They point to

:21:48. > :21:54.the fact that dissidents within the movement have been booted out. Some

:21:55. > :21:58.argue citizen activists are good at pointing out problems but there is

:21:59. > :22:01.good at coming up with solutions. They seem to be concentrated on

:22:02. > :22:08.destroying the present and attacking whatever is proposed, rather than

:22:09. > :22:15.merely sitting down and presenting an organic, articulated agenda on

:22:16. > :22:19.how to move forward. The movement is riding a wave of anti-Europe feeling

:22:20. > :22:20.here and Brussels need to brace itself for the coming of some

:22:21. > :22:29.Italian style people power. You may remember Tara the hero cat,

:22:30. > :22:32.who saved her family's little boy when he was being attacked

:22:33. > :22:35.by a dog in California. Well, Tara has now become a bit

:22:36. > :22:48.of a celebrity in her home town She has been appearing on television

:22:49. > :22:54.and even starring in sporting events. An unexpected honour for an

:22:55. > :22:59.unlikely hero. Tom at the cat, the newest celebrity in the Californian

:23:00. > :23:03.town of Bakersfield, making a guest appearance at her local minor league

:23:04. > :23:09.baseball team to throughout the first pitch. For the family, it has

:23:10. > :23:14.been a bit of a world. You'll she has own place on the couch, her own

:23:15. > :23:20.spot-on the bed. We are having a great time. It is amazing. This is

:23:21. > :23:24.what made her famous. She fought off a dog who was attacking her

:23:25. > :23:31.four-year-old owner. It has become an internet sensation. So to the

:23:32. > :23:35.pitch. Tara was allowed to use specially made cat friendly

:23:36. > :23:41.equipment or, if you like, a port on a string, but still failed to

:23:42. > :23:46.impress. Instead, it felt to Jeremy, showing how it should be done, not

:23:47. > :23:52.once but twice. The parents say he is suffering no ill effects from the

:23:53. > :23:54.dog attack. They are having to get used to being media celebrities, all

:23:55. > :23:57.thanks to the cat. The rock band, Led Zeppelin,

:23:58. > :24:01.is in a legal battle over its famous There have been allegations that

:24:02. > :24:05.the opening of the song is based on another tune by a Los Angeles

:24:06. > :24:08.band, written in the late-60s. Lawyers for that band's guitarist,

:24:09. > :24:10.Randy California, say he should be given a writing

:24:11. > :24:14.credit on the song, which appeared You cannot help but notice there is

:24:15. > :25:02.our entertainment reporter. You cannot help but notice there is

:25:03. > :25:05.a case to answer, one would think. These cases to come up quite a lot.

:25:06. > :25:12.This goes back to the late 1960s. These cases to come up quite a lot.

:25:13. > :25:15.Randy California is a guitarist for a band called Spirit.

:25:16. > :25:21.Randy California is a guitarist for an instrumental track they accorded

:25:22. > :25:25.in 1968. And it was published. The lines get blurred it because Led

:25:26. > :25:36.Zeppelin opened Spirit on the first tour of North

:25:37. > :25:39.would have been aware of the track. This argument has been around for

:25:40. > :25:43.quite a long time. And he must have been aware of this for many years.
