:00:19. > :00:21.A powerful typhoon hits Japan's southern islands - more than half

:00:22. > :00:23.a million people are urged to leave their homes for safety.

:00:24. > :00:26.A report into the South Korean ferry sinking blames official

:00:27. > :00:28.corruption and negligence - almost 300 people died in the disaster.

:00:29. > :00:31.Hamas says Israel should shoulder its responsibility for the

:00:32. > :00:41.escalating violence in Gaza after a major military operation there.

:00:42. > :00:47.and we meet the young woman who defied her disability to add to the

:00:48. > :01:04.titles she won in Australia and France.

:01:05. > :01:06.Hello and welcome. It is one of the strongest storms to sweep the

:01:07. > :01:12.Pacific in decades. These are the latest pictures of

:01:13. > :01:14.Japan's southern island of Okinawa where people are beginning to feel

:01:15. > :01:17.the brunt of Typhoon Neoguri. More than half

:01:18. > :01:19.a million people are leaving Flights

:01:20. > :01:22.in the area have been cancelled, sea lanes closed and around 70,000

:01:23. > :01:24.homes are without power. The storm will be at its most

:01:25. > :01:27.powerful as it passes Okinawa. Officials warn it could bring waves

:01:28. > :01:30.up to 14 metres high and wind gusts This gives you an idea

:01:31. > :01:42.of just how big this typhoon is this is a view from

:01:43. > :01:45.the international space station. Typhoon Neoguri stretches

:01:46. > :01:50.from Southern Japan to Taiwan. The typhoon is expected to gradually

:01:51. > :01:52.weaken gradually over the next 24 to 48 hours but they are

:01:53. > :01:57.still expecting a lot of rain. The islands south of Japan

:01:58. > :02:01.and southern Japan itself could see That could cause flash floods

:02:02. > :02:06.and landslides. Neoguri is expected to track north

:02:07. > :02:09.then east, Then it should make its way up

:02:10. > :02:35.the main island of Honshu Our correspondent in Tokyo says the

:02:36. > :02:39.storm remains a big concern. It was a super typhoon. It is now weakening

:02:40. > :02:44.but it is still a really huge weather system. It is carrying a lot

:02:45. > :02:51.of wind and a huge amount of moisture. The latest reports I have

:02:52. > :02:57.seen on the television I have seen from Okinawa show a lot of

:02:58. > :03:02.structural damage. All the traffic lights are out. There are widespread

:03:03. > :03:08.power cuts. All the things you would expect to see in a storm of this

:03:09. > :03:11.scale. The good news is there are no reports of fatalities so far. It

:03:12. > :03:17.looks like people in Okinawa are riding out the storm so far quite

:03:18. > :03:21.successfully. Japan is a wealthy country with well built strong

:03:22. > :03:29.buildings. People are staying inside and it looks like by and large they

:03:30. > :03:34.are staying safe. Japan does prepare for typhoons well because they

:03:35. > :03:39.experience them a lot, doesn't it? Japan is a country which prepares

:03:40. > :03:43.for all sorts of disasters. It sits in the typhoon region of the western

:03:44. > :03:49.Pacific. It is also right on the Pacific Ring of Fire so it is used

:03:50. > :04:00.to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanoes. It is a country which

:04:01. > :04:09.thinks very well and builds buildings to withstand these kind of

:04:10. > :04:12.disasters. It is very different from what we saw in the Philippines when

:04:13. > :04:16.the typhoon struck last year. Here, the instructor is much better and

:04:17. > :04:22.can with and the storm is much better.

:04:23. > :04:31.We will be keeping across that storm to find out what damage it causes.

:04:32. > :04:35.Let's stay in the region. A South Korean government report into the

:04:36. > :04:41.ferry thinking which killed almost 300 people back in April, has

:04:42. > :04:49.pointed to official corruption and negligence -- the ferry sinking. The

:04:50. > :04:53.release comes as the trial of the captain and some of the crewmembers

:04:54. > :05:01.resumes. Video footage will be presented in court from the day the

:05:02. > :05:05.sinking. The BBC's Lucy Williams is outside the court and she says there

:05:06. > :05:12.have been some distressing scenes. Inside the court there has been a

:05:13. > :05:16.lot of footage of the captain and crew and also footage from inside

:05:17. > :05:21.the ship, shot by one of the schoolchildren who died in this

:05:22. > :05:25.disaster. That footage shows him and his classmates gathered in the

:05:26. > :05:29.corridors of the ship, wearing their life jackets, laughing and joking,

:05:30. > :05:35.not understanding the gravity of the situation. The prosecution was

:05:36. > :05:38.insistent that this was important footage to show because it indicated

:05:39. > :05:43.how close the exit doors were for many of the children on board. They

:05:44. > :05:47.are making the case that none of these deaths needed to happen if the

:05:48. > :05:50.captain and crew had acted differently. The judge said he

:05:51. > :05:54.understood this would be very distressing footage, particularly

:05:55. > :05:58.for the families of many of these young victims, who come here every

:05:59. > :06:01.week to watch the proceedings. Indeed, there were many tears in the

:06:02. > :06:08.courtroom as the footage was displayed. One woman was seen

:06:09. > :06:12.outside the courtroom breaking down in tears, screaming again and again,

:06:13. > :06:17.give me back my children. All this comes on the same day that an

:06:18. > :06:21.interim government report spread the blame for this disaster much more

:06:22. > :06:28.widely, calling into question the actions of the Coast Guard,

:06:29. > :06:32.regulators, inspectors. 11 officials have already faced corruption

:06:33. > :06:36.charges and the South Korean president all this time is vowing to

:06:37. > :06:41.clean up these lax regulations and inspections and make South Korea

:06:42. > :06:48.safe for its citizens. Lucy Williamson there.

:06:49. > :06:53.Let's bring you the latest on the Middle East. Israel is taking other

:06:54. > :06:57.measures in case it decides to send ground troops into the Gaza Strip.

:06:58. > :07:01.The situation on the ground has becoming creasing utensil.

:07:02. > :07:06.Overnight, Israel carried out air strikes towards 50 targets in Gaza.

:07:07. > :07:13.Doctors say women and children were injured. Israel says the action is

:07:14. > :07:19.aimed at stopping the barrage of rockets being fired by Hamas.

:07:20. > :07:22.Earlier I spoke to Sir Peter Lerner. He said they had not ruled out

:07:23. > :07:25.sending in ground troops and He said they had not ruled out

:07:26. > :07:33.sending in ground troops they are targeting Hamas strongholds. The

:07:34. > :07:39.situation where Hamas chooses to infiltrate the structure is a huge

:07:40. > :07:44.challenge for us. We have intelligence and we are striking the

:07:45. > :07:50.heart of that organisation, its operatives, its infrastructure, the

:07:51. > :07:57.rockets which are being poised and prepared to be launched at our

:07:58. > :08:03.towns. Will you use ground troops? I say that we hope not. We have to be

:08:04. > :08:09.prepared for that escalation. Indeed, we are preparing, we have

:08:10. > :08:14.called up some reservists and we are taking the necessary steps around

:08:15. > :08:20.the Gaza Strip to be prepared for that option. That is not a DS

:08:21. > :08:28.collation, is it? No, that is what we call for last week. They have

:08:29. > :08:34.escalated the situation and forced us to a situation where we have no

:08:35. > :08:38.choice, we have to respond. That was Sir Peter Lerner from the Israeli

:08:39. > :08:47.defence Force speaking to me early on.

:08:48. > :08:54.The Australian government have refused... A legal challenges the

:08:55. > :08:58.latest development in a growing controversy when Australia confirmed

:08:59. > :09:02.that a boat with more than 40 other Sri Lankan asylum seekers was

:09:03. > :09:07.intercepted at sea and turned around on Sunday. Phil Mercer is in Sydney

:09:08. > :09:13.and he has been following the latest developments. The High Court here in

:09:14. > :09:17.Australia issued an interim injunction against the transfer of

:09:18. > :09:22.asylum seekers from this second vessel, apparently intercepted by

:09:23. > :09:26.Australian authorities near Christmas Island in the Indian

:09:27. > :09:32.Ocean. The full hearing resumes in the southern city of Melbourne

:09:33. > :09:36.today. At issue, exactly where this asylum boat was stopped by the

:09:37. > :09:40.Australians. The government insists it was picked up outside of

:09:41. > :09:45.Australia's territorial waters, therefore the passengers on board

:09:46. > :09:49.are not able to claim asylum in Australia. Refugee lawyers have a

:09:50. > :09:54.very different view, they believe the boat was intercepted in

:09:55. > :09:59.Australian waters, therefore those on board can seek asylum here. It is

:10:00. > :10:05.a very conjugated Kay said it has been adjourned for about three weeks

:10:06. > :10:09.but that raises big questions. What happens to these asylum seekers in

:10:10. > :10:15.the care of the authorities for the next 21 days, while they are still

:10:16. > :10:18.being kept on the high seas. The issue of asylum seekers and

:10:19. > :10:23.immigration is very big in Australia. This episode plays into a

:10:24. > :10:28.wider context of tough measures taken by the government. The

:10:29. > :10:33.Conservative Prime Minister was elected in Australia in September of

:10:34. > :10:38.last year, and part of his election campaign was promising to stop the

:10:39. > :10:43.boats. That was Mr Abbott's mantra, the boats being vessels carrying

:10:44. > :10:48.unauthorised maritime arrivals into Australia's northern waters. In

:10:49. > :10:53.recent years we have seen a steady flow of those boats. Mr Abbott

:10:54. > :10:58.brought in the military to try and fortify Australia's northern

:10:59. > :11:04.maritime borders. Offshore detention camps were opened as a deterrent for

:11:05. > :11:11.asylum seekers. Some very hard-line measures pursued by the Australian

:11:12. > :11:13.government. Many voters agreed with Mr Abbott but there is a part of

:11:14. > :11:19.Australia that believes that Mr Abbott is behaving unfairly harshly.

:11:20. > :11:24.Till Mercer in Sydney now. The defence team of Oscar Pistorius

:11:25. > :11:28.has ended its case. The prosecution finished cross-examining the final

:11:29. > :11:32.defence witness yesterday. Mr Pistorius denies murder. He claims

:11:33. > :11:45.he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp when he shot her stake for

:11:46. > :12:09.an intruder. Milton Nkosi reports. As you can see, the packing up as

:12:10. > :12:09.begun. The judge said they would reconvene here on the 7th of

:12:10. > :13:10.August. We do not know when... expected to ask for money so that

:13:11. > :13:18.detention centres can be built for the children and officials hired to

:13:19. > :13:24.look after them. It is all about the children.

:13:25. > :13:28.Outside the White House, opponents of plans to deport unaccompanied

:13:29. > :13:34.child migrants raised their voices. For them, this is a simple

:13:35. > :13:48.humanitarian issue. Some of them do not know what is happening. They

:13:49. > :13:54.said, you go with these people. On the other side of the argument,

:13:55. > :13:59.passions are just as strong. These are anti-immigration protesters in

:14:00. > :14:06.California last week, angry at the number of immigrants entering the US

:14:07. > :14:08.illegally. Since October, 52,000 unaccompanied children from

:14:09. > :14:14.Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have been caught entering the United

:14:15. > :14:22.States. That is double the figure from the year before. According to

:14:23. > :25:48.the White House, those who can prove they are suffering at home can stay.

:25:49. > :25:52.the president. Bill Clinton 's runs throughout Washington DC during the

:25:53. > :26:06.morning rush hour probably presented the Secret Service with its greatest

:26:07. > :26:15.challenge during my protective career. We went out the same gate

:26:16. > :26:17.and ran the same routes. When you become predictable that's when the

:26:18. > :26:21.real danger comes in. become predictable that's when the

:26:22. > :26:27.real danger comes The qualities that make a really good Secret Service

:26:28. > :26:32.agent is first of all, the ability to with stand a lot of hardship, a

:26:33. > :26:36.lot of physical discomfort, but the will to do the job. You are not

:26:37. > :26:39.going to get a lot of thanks, you are not going to get any

:26:40. > :26:44.recognition, but what you do get is a feeling of accomplishment, of a

:26:45. > :26:45.job well done when you go home at the end of the day and the president

:26:46. > :26:49.is still alive. Retired Secret Service agent

:26:50. > :26:53.Dan Emmett there on what it takes
