:00:24. > :00:26.Reports in the last hour say two policemen in Dallas have been shot,

:01:25. > :01:29.during protests against recent police shootings in Minnesota and
:01:30. > :01:35.Louisiana. Details are still emerging but one organiser of the
:01:36. > :01:41.protest says that eight shots have been fired. The incident comes as
:01:42. > :01:48.President Obama says all-American should be concerned about police
:01:49. > :01:53.shootings black men the --. Protesters were marching along the
:01:54. > :01:58.street downtown half a mile from City Hall where the shots erupted in
:01:59. > :02:03.the crowd scattered seeking shelter. President Obama was speaking after
:02:04. > :02:07.landing in Poland about three hours after details of the incident
:02:08. > :02:11.emerged. He said all-American should be concerned about the shootings. --
:02:12. > :02:12.all Americans. When incidents like this occur,
:02:13. > :02:15.there's a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if,
:02:16. > :02:21.because of the colour of their skin, This is not just a black issue,
:02:22. > :02:39.it's not just a Hispanic issue. This an American issue,
:02:40. > :02:45.that we should all care about. All fair-minded people
:02:46. > :02:51.should be concerned. Now, let me just say,
:02:52. > :02:59.we have extraordinary appreciation and respect for the vast
:03:00. > :03:01.majority of police officers, who put their lives on the line
:03:02. > :03:07.to protect us every single day, they've got a dangerous
:03:08. > :03:13.job, it is a tough job. Our North America correspondent
:03:14. > :03:16.Nick Bryant has spent the day in Minnesota, where the shooting
:03:17. > :03:18.happened, and you may find some of the images in his
:03:19. > :03:20.report distressing. He's licensed, he's carrying,
:03:21. > :03:24.he's licensed to carry. He was trying to get out his ID
:03:25. > :03:28.and his wallet out his pocket... The immediate aftermath of yet
:03:29. > :03:31.another police shooting, this time not just caught on camera,
:03:32. > :03:35.but streamed live on Facebook. And the officer just
:03:36. > :03:40.shot him in his arm. The female passenger in the car,
:03:41. > :03:43.Diamond Reynolds, has just seen her boyfriend
:03:44. > :03:47.shot by a policeman. He is fast losing blood,
:03:48. > :03:49.and fast losing consciousness. You told him to get his ID, Sir,
:03:50. > :03:56.his driver's licence. Please don't tell me my boyfriend
:03:57. > :04:03.just went like that. Philando Castile had been pulled
:04:04. > :04:06.over because his rear light wasn't working, and apparently
:04:07. > :04:08.told the officer he had a legally-purchased,
:04:09. > :04:10.concealed weapon with him Mr Castile had worked as a cafeteria
:04:11. > :04:17.supervisor at a local Protesters converged
:04:18. > :04:26.on the Governor's mansion, draping it with police tape taken
:04:27. > :04:29.from the scene of the shooting. Giving angry voice to now-familiar
:04:30. > :04:38.cries of protest, that have echoed Then, Diamond Reynolds stepped
:04:39. > :04:47.before the crowd carrying her young daughter, who had witnessed
:04:48. > :04:50.everything from the back seat Not one shot, not two shots,
:04:51. > :04:59.not three shots, not four shots, It is the second shocking
:05:00. > :05:07.incident this week. This is footage from Baton Rouge,
:05:08. > :05:10.Louisiana, showing a black man, Alton Sterling, being held down
:05:11. > :05:19.by police and shot several times. Another police shooting,
:05:20. > :05:23.another black family left to mourn, We're seeing this with
:05:24. > :05:30.alarming regularity. Michael Brown, Tamir Rice,
:05:31. > :05:35.Eric Garner, Freddie Gray. The names associated with some
:05:36. > :05:37.of the more high-profile police This year alone, 123
:05:38. > :05:47.African-Americans have been killed It's stunning to see in two days
:05:48. > :05:53.what we've been seeing for years, and that is police
:05:54. > :05:57.killing of citizens. And the question is,
:05:58. > :06:00.when will there be a systematic response to what has been a systemic
:06:01. > :06:07.problem in the United States? And I think that we've been saying
:06:08. > :06:14.this over and over again. And I think the last two days
:06:15. > :06:17.brought this to a real tipping point for how this country
:06:18. > :06:23.deals with policing. With so much fury in so many
:06:24. > :06:31.communities, the fear is that this could be the start of a long,
:06:32. > :06:35.hot summer, words which for decades have been uttered with
:06:36. > :06:53.a sense of foreboding. Let's get the latest on media
:06:54. > :06:58.reports about two police officers being shot during a protest in
:06:59. > :07:03.Dallas. The BBC's correspondent is in Dallas. We don't know many
:07:04. > :07:06.details but tell us what we know. Well, we know that these protests
:07:07. > :07:10.have been going on in downtown Dallas for the last few hours.
:07:11. > :07:14.Witnesses say it was a very peaceful protest until they heard shots
:07:15. > :07:20.ringing out. Some people talk of possibly 30 or 40 shots, in fact
:07:21. > :07:25.there is video that is on social media where those shots can very
:07:26. > :07:29.clearly be heard. A lot of confusion, people dive into the
:07:30. > :07:34.ground, to safety. And the police now are swarming that area, heavily
:07:35. > :07:38.armed police officers have moved into the area. According to local
:07:39. > :07:44.media reports, two officers have been shot. We do not know the extent
:07:45. > :07:49.of their injuries. And some people, some witnesses, have talked of
:07:50. > :07:55.possibly bystanders being shot as well. But again we have no
:07:56. > :08:02.confirmation on that either. And do we know where the gunshot came from?
:08:03. > :08:06.We don't know, precisely. There is some speculation that it could have
:08:07. > :08:10.been a sniper who was perched in a nearby building. That is where the
:08:11. > :08:15.attention seems to be being focused. The police that have moved into the
:08:16. > :08:19.area are looking at buildings that were surrounding the area where the
:08:20. > :08:23.demonstration was taking place. But I should emphasise that the police
:08:24. > :08:28.are not confirming this. There has been a certain amount of confusion,
:08:29. > :08:31.especially amongst eyewitnesses and bystanders. Concerned obviously
:08:32. > :08:35.about their own safety and telling the story as they understand it. And
:08:36. > :08:39.as I say some people posting video to social media, where it is
:08:40. > :08:43.difficult to see what is happening, but you can certainly hear some
:08:44. > :08:49.gunshots. In fact, several gunshots ringing out. And because, of course,
:08:50. > :08:53.not just in Dallas but protests have been taking place across the country
:08:54. > :09:00.against police murders of two black men, one in Minnesota and another
:09:01. > :09:05.one in Louisiana recently. That's right, clearly there have been
:09:06. > :09:08.protests in those cities, in New York city as well there has been
:09:09. > :09:13.quite a significant protest. They have not been any other reports of
:09:14. > :09:17.any violence or indeed any trouble. At it does tell the story of what is
:09:18. > :09:23.happening in America today. And that is that a lot of people are very,
:09:24. > :09:27.very angry and concerned about what has happened over the last couple of
:09:28. > :09:32.days, as you say, two black men being shot dead by the police in
:09:33. > :09:37.quite separate incidents. And emotions are running very high. And
:09:38. > :09:41.clearly we have seen that in New York city, a demonstration that, and
:09:42. > :09:45.this one in Dallas as well. Dallas incident, and as I say we are still
:09:46. > :09:49.trying to gather information into exactly what is happening but it is
:09:50. > :09:53.the first incident that seems to have turned violent. Those details
:09:54. > :09:57.to be confirmed. And a lot of confusion still on the ground.
:09:58. > :10:04.In Iraq, at least 30 people have been killed and 60 injured,
:10:05. > :10:08.in an attack by suicide bombers and gunmen on a Shia shrine
:10:09. > :10:10.According to officials, the attack started when a suicide
:10:11. > :10:13.bomber targeted policemen guarding the entrance to the Sayid Mohammed
:10:14. > :10:16.bin Ali al-Hadi shrine in Balad, 90 kilometres north of the capital,
:10:17. > :10:23.A second bomber entered the shrine with nine gunmen,
:10:24. > :10:25.targeting security forces as well as families gathering
:10:26. > :10:27.to celebrate the Eid festival, marking the end of the holy
:10:28. > :10:35.Officials say a third bomber was killed.
:10:36. > :10:39.The attack comes as the official death toll from a suicide bombing
:10:40. > :10:43.in Baghdad on Sunday has risen to 292.
:10:44. > :10:46.That attack, which took place in a busy shopping street
:10:47. > :10:48.in the mainly-Shia Karrada district of Baghdad,
:10:49. > :10:51.was claimed by the so-called Islamic State.
:10:52. > :10:54.It was the deadliest bombing in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003.
:10:55. > :11:02.We will bring you more on this latest attack as we get it.
:11:03. > :11:06.Voters in Japan will elect members of the upper house of the parliament
:11:07. > :11:08.on Sunday, and the stakes are particularly high
:11:09. > :11:13.If his group can increase its majority, he might gain
:11:14. > :11:15.the power to try and change the country's constitution.
:11:16. > :11:23.Stephen Evans has this report from Tokyo.
:11:24. > :11:29.If the government can win more seats in this election,
:11:30. > :11:32.so it has a two-thirds majority in the upper house of the Japanese
:11:33. > :11:36.parliament, the first constitutional change in seven
:11:37. > :11:44.For 70 years there's been no change at all.
:11:45. > :11:47.But the ruling LDP has always wanted to revise the constitution.
:11:48. > :11:51.They regard it as an imposition by the American forces,
:11:52. > :11:58.and so there is a very strong baggage attached.
:11:59. > :12:03.The baggage is that Japan's constitution is pacifist.
:12:04. > :12:08.There is a navy, but by law it can only defend the homeland.
:12:09. > :12:12.The army can't fight abroad without constitutional change.
:12:13. > :12:18.Prime Minister Abe is out campaigning.
:12:19. > :12:21.He doesn't mention wanting to change the constitution,
:12:22. > :12:28.but his opponents say that is the intention.
:12:29. > :12:33.Itsuki Kurosawa reads her daughter stories of war.

:12:45. > :13:01.3.5 years ago, his promise was to change the constitution.
:13:02. > :13:04.My daughter was eight months old then, and I felt I could only
:13:05. > :13:07.give her a peaceful future if I could campaign to stop that.
:13:08. > :13:10.The subtext of this election is whether Japan should
:13:11. > :13:13.That is becoming a theme on this planet now.
:13:14. > :13:15.As economic power shifts and uncertainty arises,
:13:16. > :13:35.British politics and stability haven't exactly gone hand-in-hand
:13:36. > :13:37.lately, but one thing is now certain.
:13:38. > :13:40.A woman is on track to become the next Prime Minister.
:13:41. > :13:42.In their ballot to select a new party leader, Conservative MPs
:13:43. > :13:45.have narrowed it down to Theresa May and Andrea Leadsom.
:13:46. > :13:47.Party members will decide the winner in September.
:13:48. > :13:48.Our political editor Laura Kuenssberg has

:14:08. > :14:11.Miles ahead of both her rivals today.
:14:12. > :14:13.Her supporters already crying "Prime Minister."
:14:14. > :14:21.This vote shows that the Conservative Party can come
:14:22. > :14:22.together and that under my leadership it will.
:14:23. > :14:25.We need proven leadership to negotiate the best deal
:14:26. > :14:28.for leaving the European Union, to unite our party and our country
:14:29. > :14:31.and to make Britain a country that works, not for the privileged few,
:14:32. > :14:35.And in the grand rooms of Westminster, the vote was clear.
:14:36. > :14:53.Therefore Michael Gove with the lowest number of votes has
:14:54. > :14:56.With Michael Gove out, and the Energy Minister,
:14:57. > :15:00.Andrea Leadsom, trailing, Mrs May's supporters were delighted.
:15:01. > :15:03.Not quite waving on the steps of Number Ten yet, but she has just
:15:04. > :15:06.won the very clear endorsement of the majority of Tory MPs.
:15:07. > :15:12.Her backers hope her experience makes her the clear favourite.
:15:13. > :15:15.She can truly say, as we go to the country,
:15:16. > :15:19.Are you surprised by how strong the result was?
:15:20. > :15:21.Well, she got 165 earlier in the week, a fantastic,
:15:22. > :15:25.To go forward even further and get to touching the 200,
:15:26. > :15:27.it is a clear indication of what parliamentarians think
:15:28. > :15:37.I can't hear you, are you ready for Andrea?
:15:38. > :15:39.Traditional Tories, though, are excited
:15:40. > :15:42.The eurosceptic Energy Minister is far less experienced.
:15:43. > :15:44.Her colleagues need reassurance about her record.
:15:45. > :15:47.But one wing of the party is enthusiastic enough to march
:15:48. > :15:49.along the river in in an unusual show of Conservative support.
:15:50. > :15:59.She was hardly known before the referendum.
:16:00. > :16:02.How difficult was it to decide to run?
:16:03. > :16:04.I feel, having played a part in showing this country
:16:05. > :16:08.the prospects for us outside of the EU, I just felt I needed
:16:09. > :16:10.to put myself forward to offer to lead the way through it
:16:11. > :16:23.But just a couple of days into the race she's already been

:16:39. > :16:42.I started life as a 14-year-old silver service waitress.
:16:43. > :16:44.My CV is incredibly varied and it is all absolutely true.
:16:45. > :16:48.I think this is, you know, ridiculous.
:16:49. > :16:51.Her backers, though, think she can win over the Tory
:16:52. > :16:59.I love the idea of two women battling it out, showing us exactly

:17:01. > :17:03.The Justice Secretary Michael Gove betrayed his friend Boris Johnson
:17:04. > :17:08.I'm naturally disappointed that I haven't been able to make it
:17:09. > :17:11.through to the final round of this leadership contest.
:17:12. > :17:14.This is a moment Theresa May's team will treasure, a more
:17:15. > :17:17.successful start to the race than they could have hoped.
:17:18. > :17:20.But now MPs lose control and the contest goes to the country.

:17:41. > :17:47.The murder of a shopkeeper in Scotland in March sent shockwaves
:17:48. > :17:54.through the country. On Thursday, his killer pleaded guilty. This is
:17:55. > :17:58.believed to be linked to another high-profile killing in Pakistan.
:17:59. > :18:11.A well loved British Pakistanis shopkeeper is brutally murdered by.
:18:12. > :18:18.The family are left asking why. Initially, tabloids linked to murder
:18:19. > :18:32.to a Facebook post hours before his death. Some think he was killed for
:18:33. > :18:37.belonging to a controversial sect. This was put together in Bradford,
:18:38. > :18:41.carried out in Scotland, but was inspired by actions in Pakistan.
:18:42. > :18:46.This was linked with the killing of a Pakistani politician five years
:18:47. > :18:52.ago. Both were accused by some of having committed blasphemy. Today in
:18:53. > :18:58.court, the killer pleaded guilty to murder, saying he was defending
:18:59. > :19:06.Islam. I wouldn't call him a man, I don't have any message that monster.
:19:07. > :19:11.He basically took away a person who was peaceful, who wanted unity in
:19:12. > :19:22.the world, who wanted the communities to unite, who wanted to
:19:23. > :19:35.help the community, and him harming someone of peace is literally, he
:19:36. > :19:39.is, he is the enemy of humanity. On the 29th of March, Asad Shah had
:19:40. > :19:43.been working in his family's shock when he was brutally attacked. After
:19:44. > :19:48.stabbing him to death, his killer, who had travelled 200 miles from
:19:49. > :19:52.Bradford, calmly waited in a bus stop opposite for the police. His
:19:53. > :19:56.brother witnessed the attack but still finds it too difficult to talk
:19:57. > :20:00.about. He told me his father had brought the family to Scott and in
:20:01. > :20:08.the 90s from Pakistan to escape religious intolerance. His pharmacy
:20:09. > :20:14.was set on fire by extremists and his hospital was burnt down, and we
:20:15. > :20:20.had an apartment above the pharmacy, where my parents were with the kids.
:20:21. > :20:26.It was set on fire, might have thought about our future, and he
:20:27. > :20:32.thought we would be safer in Britain. Unimaginable what has
:20:33. > :20:35.happened to my brother, and it was my dad trying to protect the kids,
:20:36. > :20:44.thinking something like this would happen in Pakistan, and it has
:20:45. > :20:48.happened here. It seems Asad Ahmed wasn't targeted for his faith but
:20:49. > :20:53.because of videos he was posting online. Recorded in his shop but
:20:54. > :20:59.discussing his beliefs. In some he claims to be a prophet. One who
:21:00. > :21:03.watch the videos and was incensed by them is this 32-year-old man, a
:21:04. > :21:09.minicab driver from Bradford who would go on to murder Asad Shah. He
:21:10. > :21:16.was a fervent admirer of another killer, who had murdered a prominent
:21:17. > :21:18.Liberal Pakistani politician because he was proposing to reform
:21:19. > :21:26.Pakistan's controversial blasphemy laws. He was executed earlier this
:21:27. > :21:29.year, but many in Pakistan held up to hero, saying he defended the
:21:30. > :21:40.honour of the Prophet. Thousands turned out for his funeral. His
:21:41. > :21:50.brother said Ahmed had talked to him about the Glasgow shopkeeper.
:21:51. > :21:59.Photo tribute online betray the two killers together. The killer was
:22:00. > :22:20.inspired by the example. He wasn't the only person in Britain
:22:21. > :22:29.to admire Mumdaz Qadri. Others expressed support for the him. Both
:22:30. > :22:32.Ahmed and Mumdaz Qadri come from a strand of Islam that is normally
:22:33. > :22:36.associate with a spiritual, liberal interpretation of religion. One that
:22:37. > :22:45.completely opposes Al Qaeda and ISIS. At the murders they committed
:22:46. > :22:50.upsets the simplistic idea that shows some sects are violent and
:22:51. > :22:58.others peaceful. Extremism is more complex. Tonight, Ahmed faces a
:22:59. > :23:02.lengthy jail sentence. Even from behind bars he is able to spread his
:23:03. > :23:09.message. Here, he was seen sending it greetings this week. The message
:23:10. > :23:12.ends with a chilling slogan. The penalty for those who insult the
:23:13. > :23:17.profit, cut their heads from their bodies. The man who murdered your
:23:18. > :23:22.brother, he said he did so because he was defending the honour of the
:23:23. > :23:26.Prophet Muhammad, because he says your brother was claiming to be a
:23:27. > :23:32.prophet. Muhamed would not have done anything like that. I think it is
:23:33. > :23:39.very clear when you look at the history, he didn't resort to
:23:40. > :23:43.violence and things like this. Asad Shah's family have been torn apart
:23:44. > :23:47.by the murder. They want to preserve his memory but are in fear of their
:23:48. > :23:57.lives. It has been very difficult for the family. The family don't
:23:58. > :24:06.feel safe any more living here in Scotland. And it has split the
:24:07. > :24:18.family apart since the incident, and some members of the family have left
:24:19. > :24:19.Scotland or in process of leaving and it really shouldn't have come to
