0:00:00 > 0:00:04And we visit a shooting range in India to meet the sure shot

0:00:04 > 0:00:16grandmother who has become a local celebrity at the age of 80.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19Hello and welcome to BBC World News.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22In Rome, Pope Francis has called for an end to the suffering

0:00:22 > 0:00:24of children, and for peace in the Middle East.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27It comes as Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem have been quieter

0:00:27 > 0:00:29than usual, after the violence which followed President Trump's

0:00:30 > 0:00:32decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34Meanwhile the Archbishop of Canterbury here in Britain,

0:00:34 > 0:00:37has used his Christmas Day sermon, to reflect on what he described

0:00:37 > 0:00:39as "tyrannical leaders around the world."

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Justin Welby said 2017 had seen 'populist leaders,'

0:00:41 > 0:00:42deceiving their people.

0:00:42 > 0:00:55The BBC's Religion Editor Martin Bashir reports.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Bright sunshine lit up the Basilica in St Peter's Square.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00But Pope Francis chose to focus his Christmas Day message

0:01:00 > 0:01:03on how conflict and oppression are casting a dark

0:01:03 > 0:01:14shadow over the world.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17He said that Christmas makes us focus on the Christ child,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19and thereby pay attention to the sufferings of children,

0:01:19 > 0:01:21particularly in the Holy Land.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24"We see Jesus in the children of the Middle East," he said,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26"who continue to suffer because of growing tensions

0:01:26 > 0:01:27between Israelis and Palestinians."

0:01:27 > 0:01:46"On this festive day, let us ask the Lord for peace for Jerusalem."

0:01:46 > 0:01:48The Anglican archbishop in Jerusalem, the Most

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Reverend Suheil Dawani, said that Christ himself wept over

0:01:51 > 0:01:53the city 2,000 years ago, and with Donald Trump's decision

0:01:54 > 0:01:56to officially recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,

0:01:56 > 0:02:06that grief continues.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10When he wept at that time, he wept for the absence of peace

0:02:10 > 0:02:12and love in the life of people who live here.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15I'm afraid that our Lord Jesus is really still weeping

0:02:15 > 0:02:18for this city.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Happy Christmas!

0:02:22 > 0:02:23At Canterbury Cathedral, Archbishop Justin Welby said

0:02:23 > 0:02:25that though Christ was born without any

0:02:25 > 0:02:27political leverage, he provides more freedom

0:02:27 > 0:02:38to individuals than the world's most powerful leaders.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41But midway through preaching, his own powers of speech

0:02:41 > 0:02:41began to fail...

0:02:42 > 0:02:43Unlike the budget, it's not gin.

0:02:43 > 0:02:50LAUGHTER.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52In Rome, Canterbury and here in Jerusalem,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Christian leaders have taken the opportunity of this day

0:02:55 > 0:02:58to challenge the wisdom of the world that they say puts

0:02:58 > 0:03:00power before people and has failed to protect the most

0:03:00 > 0:03:02vulnerable members of society, our children.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Martin Bashir, BBC News, in Jerusalem.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Russian investigators are examining what caused a bus to careen

0:03:08 > 0:03:12into a pedestrian subway in Moscow, killing at least four people.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14The victims include a woman in her thirties and a teenager.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18The driver told officials he had been trying to apply the brakes

0:03:18 > 0:03:19but they didn't work.

0:03:19 > 0:03:26Faith Orr reports.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31It is a task nobody would envy. These emergency workers are picking

0:03:31 > 0:03:36up the pieces after a bus crashed into an underpass. It killed several

0:03:36 > 0:03:42people and was only stopped by the roof of the tunnel. This was the

0:03:42 > 0:03:45terrifying moment the vehicle barrelled down the steps, hitting

0:03:45 > 0:03:49pedestrians. Officials say they are working to try to establish what

0:03:49 > 0:03:54caused the crash. TRANSLATION:The bus was driving away from the square

0:03:54 > 0:03:59and due to unknown reasons, drove into a pedestrian underpass. An

0:03:59 > 0:04:05investigation is under way. As a four people died and nine were

0:04:05 > 0:04:10hospitalised, two people refuse to go to hospital. The driver is in

0:04:10 > 0:04:14shock and investigators are working with him to try to figure out what

0:04:14 > 0:04:18happened.The driver has been detained by police but there is no

0:04:18 > 0:04:22suggestion this was terrorism. And expection of the entire Moscow bus

0:04:22 > 0:04:28fleet has now been ordered. However it happened, it is a tragedy that

0:04:28 > 0:04:31will leave the scar on the city into the year to come.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has called

0:04:33 > 0:04:36for a boycott of next year's election after the country's central

0:04:36 > 0:04:39election commission rejected his bid to take part.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41The commission said that Navalny's controversial conviction

0:04:41 > 0:04:48for embezzlement meant he couldn't run.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50BBC Russia's Olga Ivshina told us a little earlier

0:04:50 > 0:04:52about the development.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57We cannot call it a surprise but this is a very important

0:04:57 > 0:05:04We cannot call it a surprise but this is a very important twist.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Yesterday he submitted signatures and documents and just a few hours

0:05:07 > 0:05:13later he was rejected because as the head of the committee said, he has

0:05:13 > 0:05:20outstanding criminal convictions. Mr Navalny and a few human rights

0:05:20 > 0:05:22organisations around the world say the charges were politically

0:05:22 > 0:05:28motivated but Russian authorities insist well, the Russian court has

0:05:28 > 0:05:32decided that is what has happened. So he cannot run. First of all he

0:05:32 > 0:05:37said he would appeal the decision and secondly, if the band continues

0:05:37 > 0:05:46he calls to boycott the election. This is... Is adds a small intrigue

0:05:46 > 0:05:51to the elections because almost all political analyst believe that Mr

0:05:51 > 0:05:57Vladimir Putin will win but the question is the percentage and the

0:05:57 > 0:05:58turnout.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko,

0:06:00 > 0:06:02has announced he's stepping down temporarily from his role

0:06:02 > 0:06:04as the country's most senior football official.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06Mr Mutko is relinquishing his job as president

0:06:06 > 0:06:08of the Russian Football Union for six months.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11He says he wants to concentrate on contesting a lifetime ban

0:06:11 > 0:06:13from the Olympic Games over state-sponsored doping.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16However, he will still remain as chief organiser of next year's

0:06:16 > 0:06:25football World Cup in Russia.

0:06:25 > 0:06:30TRANSLATION:Today, using the opportunity I had, I address the

0:06:30 > 0:06:33executive order in regard to the temporary impossibility of

0:06:33 > 0:06:36performing my duties while court proceedings are under way. This is

0:06:36 > 0:06:43to allow the Russian football Federation to work normally. I ask

0:06:43 > 0:06:47for my full powers to be temporarily suspended for six months. I have not

0:06:47 > 0:06:50resigned and my mandate will be active until 2020.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Let's take a look at some of the other stories

0:06:53 > 0:06:53making the news...

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Peru's president has granted a medical pardon to jailed former

0:06:56 > 0:06:59president Alberto Fujimori, leading to mixed reactions from Peruvians.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01His son Kenji posted a video on Twitter showing the former

0:07:02 > 0:07:06president's reaction to the news.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08Fujimori was serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses,

0:07:08 > 0:07:10corruption and the sanctioning of death squads.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13A man has rammed his car into the headquarters

0:07:13 > 0:07:15of Germany's Social Democratic Party in Berlin.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18Police say the 58-year-old was intending to kill himself.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21He had gas cartridges in the car and cans of petrol.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24The man was injured and taken to hospital.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Authorities in the Philippines have ordered a criminal investigation

0:07:27 > 0:07:30into a shopping mall fire in the southern city of Davao.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32At least 37 people died.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Deadly blazes occur regularly in the Philippines, particularly

0:07:35 > 0:07:42in slum areas where there are virtually no fire safety standards.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44A diplomatic row between Venezuela and Canada has intensified.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Canada has announced it's banning Venezuela's ambassador to Ottawa

0:07:47 > 0:07:50from returning to the country and is expelling its charge d'affaires.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53The Canadian Foreign Minister said the move was in retaliation

0:07:53 > 0:07:55for the expulsion of its most senior diplomat from Caracas

0:07:55 > 0:07:56over the weekend.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58The BBC's Americas editor Leonardo Roccha explained

0:07:58 > 0:08:15what the row is about.

0:08:15 > 0:08:20It is about the opposition in Venezuela and the way the President

0:08:20 > 0:08:31handled the opposition movement in protest this year. In April,

0:08:31 > 0:08:35President Maduro announced he would convene a constituent assembly. It

0:08:35 > 0:08:39was controversial because this new body would take over powers and

0:08:39 > 0:08:43replace Congress. In Venezuela, that was controlled by the opposition.

0:08:43 > 0:08:49That sparked four months of protests and around 120 people were killed.

0:08:49 > 0:08:59Canada has been vocal and critical. They went against the Venezuelan

0:08:59 > 0:09:05government and what happened is that over the weekend Venezuela expelled

0:09:05 > 0:09:08the Canadian ambassador and Canada said they could not stand by and

0:09:08 > 0:09:13they will continue to support the defence of human rights in

0:09:13 > 0:09:18Venezuela.It is a tit-for-tat measure but the Brazilian Ambassador

0:09:18 > 0:09:24was also expelled?Yes. Foray different reason. They have been

0:09:24 > 0:09:28critical of President Maduro as well and the Brazilian Ambassador said

0:09:28 > 0:09:32that Brazil had broken the rule of law with the impeachment of its

0:09:32 > 0:09:36left-wing leader. What it shows here is that Venezuela has decided to

0:09:36 > 0:09:43strike against the countries that are critical of President Maduro. He

0:09:43 > 0:09:51is running for re-election next year and they will get closer to their

0:09:51 > 0:09:54allies, Russia, Cuba, left-wing allies in Latin America. The

0:09:54 > 0:10:00creation of the constituent assembly reduce the powers of the opposition

0:10:00 > 0:10:04and next year 's election should be easier for Maduro? The opposition is

0:10:04 > 0:10:12quite weak. Many of its leaders have been imprisoned, they have been

0:10:12 > 0:10:16sentenced or have left the country. The constituent assembly divided the

0:10:16 > 0:10:21opposition completely. They did not know how to act, to boycott or to

0:10:21 > 0:10:26strike back. The President called for elections early in April and he

0:10:26 > 0:10:32is almost certain to win if he does so, and get a number six U-turn.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35With regard to the expulsion of those countries, can you see this

0:10:35 > 0:10:41escalating?The conditions they imposed for Brazil are impossible.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46That would be the root turn of their former president. For Canada they

0:10:46 > 0:10:51said Canada is taking orders from Donald Trump. There is nothing

0:10:51 > 0:10:55really that can be done. For Venezuela, what is crucial our

0:10:55 > 0:11:01relations with the United States to where they explore most of their

0:11:01 > 0:11:02Royal, and with Russia.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05In the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, each year around 2,000

0:11:05 > 0:11:07women are killed over dowry demands.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10But an eighty-year-old grandmother has been waging a unique fight

0:11:10 > 0:11:10for gender equality.

0:11:11 > 0:11:12Parkashi Tomar is India's oldest shooting champion.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17Here's her story.

0:13:36 > 0:13:43Stay with us on BBC World News, still to come: The art of reclaiming

0:13:43 > 0:13:45waste and making it into desirable new products.

0:13:45 > 0:13:50We visit the Austrian workshop that's pioneering "up-cycling."

0:13:54 > 0:13:58We saw this enormous tidal wave approaching the beach,

0:13:58 > 0:14:02and people started to run, and suddenly it was complete chaos.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05The United States troops have been trying to overthrow the dictatorship

0:14:05 > 0:14:06of General Manuel Noriega.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08The Pentagon said the operation had been 90% successful

0:14:08 > 0:14:10but it's failed in its principal objective -

0:14:11 > 0:14:12to capture General Noriega

0:14:12 > 0:14:16and take him to the US to face drugs charges.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19The hammer and sickle was hastily taken away.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22The Russian flag was hoisted over what is now no longer

0:14:22 > 0:14:22the Soviet Union,

0:14:22 > 0:14:26but the Commonwealth of Independent States.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Day breaks slowly over Lockerbie,

0:14:28 > 0:14:31over the cockpit of Pan Am's Maid of the Seas,

0:14:31 > 0:14:33nosedown in the soft earth.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36You could see what happens when a plane eight storeys high,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39a football pitch wide, falls from 30,000 feet.

0:14:40 > 0:14:41Christmas has returned to Albania

0:14:41 > 0:14:43after a Communist ban lasting more than 20 years.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Thousands went to midnight mass in the town of Shkroda

0:14:46 > 0:14:51where there were anti-Communist riots ten days ago.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01This is BBC World News.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03The latest headlines:

0:15:03 > 0:15:05The Pope has been giving his Christmas blessing.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07He called for peace for Jerusalem

0:15:08 > 0:15:11and mutual trust on the Korean peninsula.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Russian investigators are examining why a bus ploughed into

0:15:14 > 0:15:19a subway entrance in Moscow, killing at least four people.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22The deadly tropical storm that cut through southern Philippines

0:15:22 > 0:15:23on Saturday,

0:15:23 > 0:15:27where it killed 240 people in mudslides and flash floods,

0:15:27 > 0:15:30is beginning to hit southern Vietnam.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32Up to one million people are being evacuated

0:15:32 > 0:15:33from low lying areas,

0:15:33 > 0:15:36as anywhere from Da Nang southwards is expected to have

0:15:36 > 0:15:39up to 500 millimetres of rain.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42A short time ago I was joined by Nick Miller,

0:15:42 > 0:15:43from the BBC Weather Centre,

0:15:43 > 0:15:49who told me the storm is now weakening.

0:15:49 > 0:15:54At one stage it was a typhoon and its strength in having moved through

0:15:54 > 0:15:58the southern Philippines just before reaching southern

0:15:58 > 0:16:00the southern Philippines just before reaching southern Vietnam's, it was

0:16:00 > 0:16:07downgraded in terms of winds speed to a tropical storm. Winter is not

0:16:07 > 0:16:13the only feature to be worried about. -- wind. The rain, the brain

0:16:13 > 0:16:19in the southern Philippines caused terrible problems and landslides,

0:16:19 > 0:16:24but also the amount of water above tide levels that will come into

0:16:24 > 0:16:29low-lying areas and that is a serious threat in the southern

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Vietnam although technically it has weakened we are still expecting

0:16:32 > 0:16:36several hours of heavy rain and there could be the potential

0:16:36 > 0:16:41damaging winds and the worst affected areas, reaching into

0:16:41 > 0:16:47hundreds of millimetres as you mentioned. And then continues

0:16:47 > 0:16:56heading west?Again, it is a weakening system. It is broken apart

0:16:56 > 0:17:00in terms of its cloud structure from what you would normally think as a

0:17:00 > 0:17:04well-defined typhoon that the energy from these moves our west into the

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Gulf of Thailand and towards Thailand and there will be areas

0:17:07 > 0:17:11come the middle of the week that will be affected by heavy rain.

0:17:11 > 0:17:19Again, that brings the potential for some flooding. By that stage perhaps

0:17:19 > 0:17:24above 100 - 100 and 50 millimetres so not producing as much rain as in

0:17:24 > 0:17:28Vietnam and certainly not as much rain and the terrible problems we

0:17:28 > 0:17:32saw in the Philippines.500 millimetres of rain in a relatively

0:17:32 > 0:17:39short time. In the Philippines that is what caused the mudslides? Not

0:17:39 > 0:17:44everybody will see that much rain. It ties in to the topography, the

0:17:44 > 0:17:50hills, the geography, so he can have areas are seeing a lot of rain with

0:17:50 > 0:17:54minimal impact but you can see a lot of rain in the worst possible areas

0:17:54 > 0:17:58and a lot of that rain will fall down very quickly and produce

0:17:58 > 0:18:03landslides and flooding so that degree of thing is unpredictable in

0:18:03 > 0:18:07terms of impact but we clearly saw that in southern Philippines stock

0:18:07 > 0:18:11we are at risk of seeing some problems not on the scale of

0:18:11 > 0:18:14southern Vietnam but that is why some evacuations are taking place.

0:18:14 > 0:18:19It needs to be watched closely.

0:18:19 > 0:18:25Fresh air strikes and clashes in Yemen have killed people as

0:18:25 > 0:18:35pro-government forces pushed an offensive against Houthi rebels.

0:18:35 > 0:18:40Government troops and coalition forces have been advancing along the

0:18:40 > 0:18:41Red Sea coast recently.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44A huge rockslide has taken place near Innsbruck in Austria.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Rocks, soil and even trees fell on the main service road,

0:18:47 > 0:18:48which is now blocked.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51People used the road to visit a church for Christmas Mass just 10

0:18:51 > 0:18:53minutes before the rocks came down.

0:18:53 > 0:18:54Luckily nobody was injured.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58Up to 150 people are still cut off from the outside world and will be

0:18:59 > 0:19:06until at least Wednesday.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10TRANSLATION: As things are now, after the last flight of the

0:19:10 > 0:19:15helicopter, there is still the danger of another rock fall. During

0:19:15 > 0:19:20the morning, the situation is a dramatised again. We thought we

0:19:20 > 0:19:25could lift most of the roadblock but during the day, it turned out that

0:19:25 > 0:19:28there are still risks of rocks braking.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31Apple are facing the prospect of a lawsuit in Israel over

0:19:31 > 0:19:34the deliberate slowing of some older models of iPhones.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37According to Israeli media the claimants are arguing that Apple

0:19:37 > 0:19:40breached its duty to customers by failing to disclose that

0:19:40 > 0:19:42installing updates to the iPhone's operating system could

0:19:42 > 0:19:45slow their devices.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48The tech giant admitted to the practice last week but said

0:19:48 > 0:19:54they only did it to try and preserve the life of the devices.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58You've heard of re-cycling but these days the new buzzword

0:19:58 > 0:20:03is up-cycling, transforming rubbish into objects of desire.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07A non-profit workshop in Austria - supported by the city government -

0:20:16 > 0:20:21It's beautiful, but it is actually all made from rubbish.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24The process starts here at this workshop.

0:20:24 > 0:20:29Workers remove hazardous substances from old computers and appliances.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31The leftovers are sent either for recycling,

0:20:31 > 0:20:38or upstairs, to the trash design team.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41What we do is that we collect specific kinds of garbage -

0:20:41 > 0:20:46that means electric and electronic equipment.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49We make, design objects and jewellery, and we offer

0:20:49 > 0:20:57the old garbage an opportunity to get reused, or to get upcycled.

0:20:57 > 0:21:03They turn vinyl records into clocks, and dead keyboards into rings.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05The glass from washing machine doors becomes sandblasted bowls,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30I find it really super.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34You make something new out of old stuff, but it hurts me

0:21:34 > 0:21:36when I have to cut up these old records.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39I recently had an old Abba album and I thought "No!",

0:21:39 > 0:21:41and then it became a notebook.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44But that's the way it goes.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46And some of Vienna's famous Christmas markets are also

0:21:46 > 0:21:48getting in on the act.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Trash design is on offer alongside the gingerbread and mulled wine.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55The workshop has its own stalls, where products are on sale,

0:21:55 > 0:22:00often for pretty prices.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03These items have come a long way from the city's rubbish dumps

0:22:04 > 0:22:09to the magnificent surroundings of one of Austria's old royal

0:22:09 > 0:22:11palaces, and when it comes to Christmas presents this year,

0:22:11 > 0:22:15the designers are hoping that it will be upcycling all the way.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42They're part of our community, they're here every day,

0:22:42 > 0:22:46and I think some places would maybe just shun them away,

0:22:46 > 0:22:49but for us, they are an important part of the community,

0:22:49 > 0:22:53they're here, we have to engage, we have to look after them and make

0:22:53 > 0:22:54sure that they're safe.

0:22:54 > 0:23:01Local charities invited 200 guests to enjoy some festive music

0:23:01 > 0:23:04and a four-course meal - a meal which was only possible

0:23:04 > 0:23:09thanks to the donations from 45 different businesses and groups.

0:23:09 > 0:23:13Jed has been squatting since he was 18.

0:23:13 > 0:23:17It's unique, like, they've got this space on Christmas Day.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21It's quite interesting to see somewhere like this on Christmas Day

0:23:21 > 0:23:23and see it put to some good use.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Jesse now squats, too, but spent many years living

0:23:26 > 0:23:28in a tent, moving around the UK.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30You know, it's a nice, relaxing environment,

0:23:30 > 0:23:33it takes us out of the usual chaos of our lives, you know.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36As well as leaving well fed, guests were also given sleeping bags

0:23:36 > 0:23:39and thermal clothes to help them endure the winter cold.
