:00:00. > :00:00.were three people in the van but of course you detained on who is in

:00:00. > :00:16.police Good morning, it's

:00:17. > :00:30.Monday the 19th of June. As van drives in two crowd of people

:00:31. > :00:33.outside a mosque. The incident happened just after midnight. Many

:00:34. > :00:40.of the victims had just finished even impress after breaking their

:00:41. > :00:45.Ramadan fast. This is the Senior this morning as police continue to

:00:46. > :00:55.deal with what they described as a major incident.

:00:56. > :00:58.Good morning, it's Monday the 19th of June.

:00:59. > :01:11.All eyes are on Brussels as historic talks begin today to take Britain

:01:12. > :01:19.out of the European Union, we'll be there live throughout the morning.

:01:20. > :01:26.And while the politicians are talking, I am at Smithfield markets

:01:27. > :01:27.in Manchester to find out what businesses want from the

:01:28. > :01:27.negotiations. As police release the first pictures

:01:28. > :01:30.from inside the charred remains of Grenfell Tower, a nationwide

:01:31. > :01:33.minutes silence will take place this morning to remember those

:01:34. > :01:45.who lost their lives. In sport, the American Brooks Koepka

:01:46. > :01:47.equalled the tournaments lowing -- lowest winning score to take his

:01:48. > :02:01.first major. Today, for many of us, hot and

:02:02. > :02:06.sunny. Temperatures peaking around 33 Celsius in the south. In the

:02:07. > :02:11.north, at different story. There is a weather front producing thick

:02:12. > :02:12.cloud and some drizzle. I will have more in about 15 minutes.

:02:13. > :02:18.One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to three

:02:19. > :02:21.separate hospitals after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians

:02:22. > :02:26.Theresa May has said police are treating the incident

:02:27. > :02:29.near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack" and counter

:02:30. > :02:36.The Prime Minister has also confirmed she will be chairing

:02:37. > :02:39.a meeting of the cabinet's emergency Cobra Committee later this morning.

:02:40. > :02:41.Officers have cordoned off a large area close

:02:42. > :02:47.Many of the victims are believed to have just left evening prayers,

:02:48. > :03:18.The London Ambulance Service deployed sixty medics to the scene -

:03:19. > :03:19.including ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist

:03:20. > :03:22.responders, as well as an advance trauma team from London's Air

:03:23. > :03:25.The Metropolitan Police say the driver of the van -

:03:26. > :03:27.a 48-year-old man - has been arrested.

:03:28. > :03:37.The Seven Sisters Road just after Mel -- midnight.

:03:38. > :03:40.This footage was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement

:03:41. > :03:44.The streets have been filled with worshippers who just left

:03:45. > :03:47.evening prayers at the Finsbury Park mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare

:03:48. > :03:50.He looked straight, he looked straight like it was towards

:03:51. > :03:56.He basically drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all

:03:57. > :04:00.the Muslims, and as he was coming to them, he hit all of them.

:04:01. > :04:03.Within hours, the Muslim Council of Britain claimed the van

:04:04. > :04:06.was intentionally driven at worshippers.

:04:07. > :04:08.Police say the driver, a 48-year-old man, was found

:04:09. > :04:13.by members of the public and handed over to officers to be arrested.

:04:14. > :04:16.He has since been taken to hospital as a precaution.

:04:17. > :04:24.And I saw a large crowd of people on the pavement.

:04:25. > :04:27.I learned after that a van that was standing up by the traffic

:04:28. > :04:30.lights was the van that mowed the people down.

:04:31. > :04:33.Several ambulances were on the scene soon afterwards with trauma teams

:04:34. > :04:40.In the early hours of the morning, Downing Street issued a statement

:04:41. > :04:46.from Theresa May, saying her thoughts are with all

:04:47. > :04:51.The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is also a local MP,

:04:52. > :04:54.said he was totally shocked and had been in touch with mosques

:04:55. > :04:56.in the area as well as Islington Council.

:04:57. > :04:58.This morning, the scene remained sealed off as counter-terrorism

:04:59. > :05:01.officers, for the third time in as many months,

:05:02. > :05:06.investigated a vehicle being driven into people on London streets

:05:07. > :05:37.This is the scene above the scene now. A large police cordon. We will

:05:38. > :05:44.be able to speak to some eyewitnesses and some who were

:05:45. > :05:48.inside the mosque. One man we will hopefully be speaking to later on

:05:49. > :05:53.with a man holding down the man who was taken by police. We understand

:05:54. > :05:58.the van driver was held down by people at the scene, some who are in

:05:59. > :06:04.hospital. They had to wait several minutes for the police to arrive. We

:06:05. > :06:06.will be speaking to London's mayor Sadiq Khan as well.

:06:07. > :06:08.Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park

:06:09. > :06:16.Graham, what's the scene like there at the moment?

:06:17. > :06:25.We are at the police cordon on Seven Sisters Road. This part of London is

:06:26. > :06:34.near Arsenal's Park. There is a terrible sense of deja vu this

:06:35. > :06:37.morning. Somebody has driven a vehicle, it looks deliberately, into

:06:38. > :06:42.a group of pedestrians. A big difference this time is that what we

:06:43. > :06:48.know is that this was a white man driving a white man who targeted a

:06:49. > :06:55.group of Muslim worshippers -- van. Think they were at the Muslim

:06:56. > :07:02.Welfare House and the Finsbury Park mosque. I have with me and man who

:07:03. > :07:09.was at the scene. Can you tell us what happened? Basically, we came

:07:10. > :07:12.out of the press. It was a calm, peaceful environment and people were

:07:13. > :07:20.running around screaming and there was chaos because people had been

:07:21. > :07:24.run over by a white man. He was dragged out of his car and pinned

:07:25. > :07:28.down and people were screaming to find the police. The two other

:07:29. > :07:33.attackers had got away. So there were three people in the van? Leigh

:07:34. > :07:40.a lot of people confirmed this. Two of the attackers got away. --A lot

:07:41. > :07:45.of people confirmed this. The police took an hour to come. I do know why

:07:46. > :07:54.they took an owl. There was a six minute response time. Both of the

:07:55. > :07:58.attackers were shot by police. The ambulance response time was within

:07:59. > :08:04.five when it. Today, it was 45 minutes. I want to know why. As

:08:05. > :08:10.Muslims, we don't all save. I have brothers, mothers and sisters. We go

:08:11. > :08:16.out, we make sure we are vigilant and safe. As Muslims, growing up in

:08:17. > :08:19.the UK, we don't feel safe practising our religion. Why is it

:08:20. > :08:25.like that? The question was asked in the media, what can be done and what

:08:26. > :08:29.can be done by the government for us to feel safe and the truth is

:08:30. > :08:33.nothing. If a man wants to go and commit a violent offence, he can do

:08:34. > :08:41.it and nothing can be doing about it. Nothing at all. This man was at

:08:42. > :08:44.the scene overnight, confirming what we have seen from a number of

:08:45. > :08:48.eyewitnesses. People who were standing around who detained the

:08:49. > :08:55.driver of this vehicle who we now believe to be a 48-year-old man who

:08:56. > :08:58.has taken to hospital. He will be questioned once released a hospital

:08:59. > :09:03.and taken into custody. Its interesting how the story developed

:09:04. > :09:07.overnight. Rees describes this as a major incident and they are now

:09:08. > :09:11.saying the counterterrorism branch of police who are investigating

:09:12. > :09:14.this. Theresa May have described it as a potential terrorist attack and

:09:15. > :09:16.it seems, from everything we are hearing on the ground, that that is

:09:17. > :09:25.exactly what this is. Back to you. If you are just turning on your

:09:26. > :09:28.television. Just to remind you, as Graham was saying, as suspected

:09:29. > :09:31.terrorist attack which has taken place in Finsbury Park overnight.

:09:32. > :09:35.One man has died and eight people have been injured. The Prime

:09:36. > :09:39.Minister says police are treating this incident as a potential

:09:40. > :09:45.terrorist attack. The Metropolitan police are describing it as a major

:09:46. > :09:58.incident and 14080 wild man has been arrested. -- and one 48-year-old man

:09:59. > :10:02.has been arrested. Sadiq Khan is talking about an attack on common

:10:03. > :10:07.values. Like the other attacks in England, it is also an assault on

:10:08. > :10:10.our shared values of tolerance, read and respect. He has also mentioned

:10:11. > :10:15.they would be extra police to reassure communities and making a

:10:16. > :10:19.point there will be especially those observing Ramadan. We will speak to

:10:20. > :10:24.the London mayor later here on BBC breakfast. This response from Jeremy

:10:25. > :10:27.Corbyn this morning as well. "I Am totally shocked at the incident in

:10:28. > :10:31.Finsbury Park this morning. I have been in touch with the mosques, the

:10:32. > :10:34.police and Islington Council regarding the incident. I thought

:10:35. > :10:42.with those and the community affected by what he calls a terrible

:10:43. > :10:45.event. We will be speaking to eyewitnesses as well from the scene

:10:46. > :10:46.and it will all be coming up little bit later.

:10:47. > :10:49.The first formal Brexit negotiations are due to begin in Brussels today.

:10:50. > :10:52.The Brexit Secretary, David Davis, will meet the EU's Chief Negotiator,

:10:53. > :10:56.Michel Barnier - with the hope of building what he calls a "new,

:10:57. > :10:58.deep and special partnership" with the organisation.

:10:59. > :11:00.The status of expats, the Northern Ireland border

:11:01. > :11:03.and the UK's so-called divorce bill are all up for discussion.

:11:04. > :11:11.Our Europe correspondent, Kevin Connolly, has more.

:11:12. > :11:19.David Davis will lead Britain's negotiators into historic talks of

:11:20. > :11:23.immense scope and complexity. European laws and rules have

:11:24. > :11:27.regulated everything from fishing quotas to football transfers. The

:11:28. > :11:32.British team will have two, a huge amount of ground. Facing them across

:11:33. > :11:37.the table will be this man. Former French minister and chief EU

:11:38. > :11:42.negotiator Michelle Barnier. He says this is not about cutting a deal

:11:43. > :11:51.designed to put other member states of the idea of leaving but he is

:11:52. > :11:55.expected to be tough. It is 44 years since the UK joined the European

:11:56. > :12:00.Community. Almost exactly one year since it voted to leave. His

:12:01. > :12:07.departure will leave a substantial hole in the EU budget. For that

:12:08. > :12:11.reason, EU officials say at financial settlement from the UK

:12:12. > :12:17.along with the distance' writes and the Irish border will have to be

:12:18. > :12:21.negotiated for -- first. -- rights. Only then will the attention be

:12:22. > :12:26.drawn to a future trade deal. Our political reporter

:12:27. > :12:33.Adam Fleming is in Brussels. This is just the start of the

:12:34. > :12:38.negotiations. Adam, what exactly will the two

:12:39. > :12:47.sides be hoping to achieve now? David Davis is coming not with all

:12:48. > :12:53.guns blazing. He is talking about forging a deep and special

:12:54. > :12:59.relationship between the EU and the UK like no other deal in history. He

:13:00. > :13:04.is not coming here to pick a fight. The in terms of the shape of the

:13:05. > :13:15.day, he will get here in a couple of hours and meet Michelle Barnier. He

:13:16. > :13:19.will be looking into having a working lunch and then the teams

:13:20. > :13:22.will break into smaller groups to discuss the three main priority

:13:23. > :13:30.issues that the EU have identified for these early stages. Sorting out

:13:31. > :13:35.the issue of rights for EU nationals living in the UK and vice-versa. The

:13:36. > :13:46.thorny issue of the Brexit Bill, how much money does the UK oh that

:13:47. > :13:51.people here in Brussels -- owe. A long, long way to go. The

:13:52. > :13:53.significance of today is its just started rather than any of the

:13:54. > :14:22.details that will emerge. One-minute silence will be held

:14:23. > :14:23.today for the Grenfell Tower disaster.

:14:24. > :14:26.Hundreds of firefighters are still tackling a huge forest

:14:27. > :14:29.fire in a hilly region of central Portugal which has already killed

:14:30. > :14:33.It's believed that a lightning strike started the fire

:14:34. > :14:35.in the Pedrogao Grande area on Saturday morning.

:14:36. > :14:41.Many of the dead perished in their cars as they tried to flee.

:14:42. > :14:43.President Macron's Republique En Marche party has won a large

:14:44. > :14:47.Projections indicate it could take up to 360

:14:48. > :14:51.Marine Le Pen of the far-right Front National has won a seat

:14:52. > :14:54.for the first time, while the Socialists are forecast

:14:55. > :15:22.We will focus on Finsbury Park and what happened last night. That is

:15:23. > :15:28.the major story this morning. We will remind you what we know.

:15:29. > :15:41.One man has died and eight people have been injured after a fan

:15:42. > :15:50.intentionally swerved in a mosque in north London.

:15:51. > :15:54.He met police are calling it a major incident.

:15:55. > :16:03.We are hearing from eyewitnesses on the ground that they tackled this

:16:04. > :16:10.man and they held him while waiting for the police to arrive. This is

:16:11. > :16:16.the live scene from Finsbury Park, which is obviously an ongoing

:16:17. > :16:26.investigation. A large area is cordoned off. The Chief Executive of

:16:27. > :16:31.the Ramadan Organisation joins us now. We know some of what happened,

:16:32. > :16:34.but not exact details. People are saying the worshippers were

:16:35. > :16:41.deliberately targeted. What do you know? I witnessed on the ground I

:16:42. > :16:47.have spoken to say the vehicle deliberately swerved towards

:16:48. > :16:58.worshippers. We know it is registered, a hire van from done --

:16:59. > :17:07.outside of London. We should not hesitate to call it what it is.

:17:08. > :17:11.These far right extremists will not succeed in dividing communities.

:17:12. > :17:21.What was your personal response when you had what happened? First of all,

:17:22. > :17:28.here we go again. Enough is enough. We have suffered enough. Human life

:17:29. > :17:32.is sacred. Whatever its background. We must all come together and reject

:17:33. > :17:36.violence and hatred. I want to call out some of the commentators and

:17:37. > :17:43.media personalities perpetuating hatred towards Islam and Muslims,

:17:44. > :17:50.they are allowing an environment to exist where these people carry out

:17:51. > :17:56.these attacks. This morning, we have heard it is an assault on all shared

:17:57. > :18:00.values of tolerance and freedom and self-respect. That is something to

:18:01. > :18:08.remember at this time. Yes. Ramadan is a month of rare and coming

:18:09. > :18:16.together as a community. -- prayer. We saw a last week with the Grenfell

:18:17. > :18:23.Tower event last week. People coming together to help. We have to reject

:18:24. > :18:28.violence absolutely from whichever section of society we find it. The

:18:29. > :18:31.Prime Minister has called this a potential terrorist attack. We have

:18:32. > :18:36.a statement from Jeremy Corbyn as well. What response do you want from

:18:37. > :18:39.authorities? The response we have seen already from the Prime Minister

:18:40. > :18:46.is very good. A global meeting is ongoing. People are concerned in

:18:47. > :18:54.mosques across the country. In the evening, many go to them. We have a

:18:55. > :19:00.heightened security alert. There will be additional security in

:19:01. > :19:06.mosques. It is a term rack attack carried out by white extremists

:19:07. > :19:10.against Muslims. Yeah, we do not know the identity of the man

:19:11. > :19:21.involved. Though, we do know some of what he was saying. Would you

:19:22. > :19:25.welcome more security during this month? Yes. I have spoken to

:19:26. > :19:28.Metropolitan Police this morning and that security will be given across

:19:29. > :19:38.the country. It is important people feel safe while praying. It has been

:19:39. > :19:41.a period of weeks of really distressing news. Would you appeal

:19:42. > :19:48.for calm? Yes. Everyone should remain calm and allow the police to

:19:49. > :19:52.carry out the investigation. They will get to the bottom of it. We

:19:53. > :20:01.will not give in. People should stay united. We are hearing from

:20:02. > :20:09.eyewitnesses this morning. Do you think there was fear in the Muslim

:20:10. > :20:15.community about rough -- reprisals? There were threats made against

:20:16. > :20:23.mosques. It has been difficult. In the end, you cannot stop and

:20:24. > :20:28.protect, you know, a mosque, a community, with this. Thank you. You

:20:29. > :20:36.will be here later. Thank you for the moment. As always, we will catch

:20:37. > :20:41.up with the weather. It has been really warm. The details. It

:20:42. > :20:49.certainly has. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far.

:20:50. > :20:57.Today, what we're looking at is a start. 20 degrees already in London.

:20:58. > :21:02.Yesterday, we reached 32.1 degrees Celsius in the London area. Today,

:21:03. > :21:06.we could hit 33. High temperatures generally, except in the north of

:21:07. > :21:10.Scotland where we have a weather front producing more cloud, patchy

:21:11. > :21:14.light rain, and also, as a result, temperatures are a bit lower. This

:21:15. > :21:18.morning we have a combination stretching from the Outer Hebrides

:21:19. > :21:27.towards the western isles. Towards the south, heavy rain first thing.

:21:28. > :21:33.Behind this, a bit of cloud, bright spells in Edinburgh, up to 20

:21:34. > :21:36.degrees. This afternoon in southern Scotland, northern England, and

:21:37. > :21:40.Northern Ireland, heavy and sharp showers which could be thundery. Dry

:21:41. > :21:44.weather to start the day in England and Wales. Sunshine from the word

:21:45. > :21:49.go. Temperatures rapidly rising. One or two showers in eastern and

:21:50. > :21:53.central England. Fairly well isolated, but if you catch one, the

:21:54. > :22:01.potential to be thundery. Most will mist them. South-west England, 29.

:22:02. > :22:07.London, 33. Wales, 32 degrees. Northern Ireland, the risk of

:22:08. > :22:10.showers. Many staying dry. The temperatures are a little bit lower.

:22:11. > :22:15.Through the evening and overnight, we lose the risk of showers.

:22:16. > :22:20.Especially thundery winds. More cloud in the east of England. Are

:22:21. > :22:25.lots of dry weather around as well. Another sultry night in prospect for

:22:26. > :22:27.many parts of England and Wales. Fresh conditions across Scotland and

:22:28. > :22:33.Northern Ireland and eventually northern England as a weather front

:22:34. > :22:37.goes south producing cloud. Somewhere like Hull tomorrow could

:22:38. > :22:43.be 10 degrees lower than today. Today we could see perhaps 29- 30 -

:22:44. > :22:47.31. Tomorrow could be 10 degrees lower. The heat will transfer

:22:48. > :22:54.towards the south-west. Bristol could have a high of 31.

:22:55. > :22:58.Temperature-wise, moving northwards, behind the weather front, we start

:22:59. > :23:02.to see fresh conditions coming in. As we move from Tuesday into

:23:03. > :23:06.Wednesday, we hang on to the heat, especially in the south of the

:23:07. > :23:12.country. A fair bit of sunshine around as well. Weather fronts

:23:13. > :23:16.coming in across the north that are going to introduce some rain. In

:23:17. > :23:21.terms of the temperature, it is unusual to see such high

:23:22. > :23:26.temperatures into the 30s on the charts, not just in London, but

:23:27. > :23:32.other parts in the country. Thank you. We will see you in half an

:23:33. > :23:41.hour. Thank you for being with us. The top story. The attack close to

:23:42. > :23:47.Finsbury Park Mosque. We can hear from two people close to it when it

:23:48. > :23:53.happened. I saw people on the floor, right and left. It was literally

:23:54. > :24:04.chaos. As he hit the curb, one ran out and police can click -- came

:24:05. > :24:11.quick. Thank God. He was on the run and they caught him. But a lot of

:24:12. > :24:18.people got hurt. It looked basically like it was towards Muslims. He

:24:19. > :24:23.basically drove on the pavement. As he was coming to them, he hit all of

:24:24. > :24:29.them, and I think one of them died. Straightaway. One of them died

:24:30. > :24:36.straightaway. The rest are in bad condition. How many people do you

:24:37. > :24:40.see on the floor? 7-8. That were seriously injured? Seriously

:24:41. > :24:49.injured. As the police came, they moved all of us quickly. They kept

:24:50. > :24:55.it under control. I asked the police if there was a man going free and

:24:56. > :24:59.they were not telling us. We were like is this a terrorist attack was

:25:00. > :25:11.white what did you see? The doors were open. I came from behind and

:25:12. > :25:18.said what is going on? Then I am on my phone. We thought it was a normal

:25:19. > :25:25.accident. Then we saw all the people on the floor. That is a terrorist

:25:26. > :25:32.attack. Khalid was at the scene. Many different eyewitness reports

:25:33. > :25:39.coming in. He described the moment pedestrians were hit. The van

:25:40. > :25:43.literally turned left with no indication. And then it just hit the

:25:44. > :25:50.people. One of them was under the van. People gathered around the van

:25:51. > :25:58.to lift it up and get the guy out. The dying jumped on it and two

:25:59. > :26:02.literally ran. Not a lot of people were coming out, but as soon as it

:26:03. > :26:08.happened, people were shouting and gathered around. Two ran, one

:26:09. > :26:21.arrested. The people surrounded him and apprehended him. He was

:26:22. > :26:24.shouting, "I want to kill all Muslims." Literally like that. Word

:26:25. > :26:32.for word. This is a terrorist attack whether he a Muslim, whether he is

:26:33. > :26:40.not, it is. I don't want to see tomorrow that he has mental issues.

:26:41. > :26:47.This is categorised as a terrorist, Christian or Muslim. No religion

:26:48. > :26:57.belongs to terrorism. Terrorism has no religion. Anyone who hurts or

:26:58. > :27:00.harms or kills people, this is terrorism. That was an eyewitness.

:27:01. > :27:04.Just to remind you, I know many people are joining us for the first

:27:05. > :27:10.time this morning, we are talking about an incident taking place

:27:11. > :27:14.outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. A van was driven into a group of

:27:15. > :27:23.people as they were leaving the mosque. One man has died and eight

:27:24. > :27:26.have been injured. The Prime Minister has called it a potential

:27:27. > :27:32.terrorist attack. We have had a quote from Sadiq Khan. We will speak

:27:33. > :27:36.to the mayor a little bit later. He says we do not yet know the complete

:27:37. > :27:41.details but this was clearly an attack on innocent Londoners. He

:27:42. > :27:46.says while this seems to be an attack on a particular community,

:27:47. > :27:49.like the terrible attacks in Manchester, Westminster, and London

:27:50. > :27:55.Bridge, it is also an assault on all of our shared values of tolerance,

:27:56. > :27:58.freedom, and respect. He goes on to say that the situation is still

:27:59. > :28:07.unfolding and he all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant. -- urges

:28:08. > :28:09.all. A 48-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the

:28:10. > :31:31.incident. Just before we go, these are live

:31:32. > :31:35.pictures of Finsbury Park. Will ease investigations are ongoing. There is

:31:36. > :31:37.much more on Breakfast and the radio station. I will be back with the

:31:38. > :31:42.latest in half an hour. One man has been killed and eight

:31:43. > :31:47.people have been taken to three separate hospitals after a van drove

:31:48. > :31:50.into a crowd of pedestrians Theresa May has said police

:31:51. > :31:54.are treating the incident near Finsbury Park "as a potential

:31:55. > :31:57.terrorist attack" and counter The Prime Minister has also

:31:58. > :32:07.confirmed she will be chairing a meeting of the cabinet's emergency

:32:08. > :32:10.Cobra Committee later this morning. Officers have cordoned

:32:11. > :32:12.off a large area close Many of the victims are believed

:32:13. > :32:20.to have just left evening prayers, Police first received calls

:32:21. > :32:26.at around twenty past midnight of reports that a vehicle had

:32:27. > :32:28.collided with pedestrians. Emergency services treated a number

:32:29. > :32:40.of casualties at the scene. The London Ambulance Service

:32:41. > :32:43.deployed sixty medics to the scene - including ambulance crews,

:32:44. > :32:45.advance paramedics and specialist responders, as well as an advance

:32:46. > :32:48.trauma team from London's Air The Metropolitan Police say

:32:49. > :32:51.the driver of the van - a 48-year-old man -

:32:52. > :32:53.has been arrested. The Seven Sisters Road

:32:54. > :33:01.in North London just after midnight. This footage filmed by an eyewitness

:33:02. > :33:04.was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement and struck

:33:05. > :33:07.several pedestrians. The streets have been filled

:33:08. > :33:09.with worshippers who just left evening prayers at the Finsbury Park

:33:10. > :33:12.mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare He looked straight, he looked

:33:13. > :33:18.straight like it was towards He basically drove on the pavement,

:33:19. > :33:26.coming straight towards all the Muslims, and as he was coming

:33:27. > :33:30.to them, he hit all of them. Within hours, the Muslim Council

:33:31. > :33:33.of Britain claimed the van was intentionally

:33:34. > :33:34.driven at worshippers. Police say the driver,

:33:35. > :33:36.a 48-year-old man, was found by members of the public and handed

:33:37. > :33:40.over to officers to be arrested. He has since been taken

:33:41. > :33:46.to hospital as a precaution. And I saw a large crowd

:33:47. > :33:54.of people on the pavement. I learned after that a van

:33:55. > :33:58.that was standing up by the traffic lights was the van that

:33:59. > :34:00.mowed the people down. Several ambulances were on the scene

:34:01. > :34:03.soon afterwards with trauma teams In the early hours of the morning,

:34:04. > :34:11.Downing Street issued a statement from Theresa May, saying her

:34:12. > :34:13.thoughts were with all The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn,

:34:14. > :34:17.who is also a local MP, said he was totally shocked and had

:34:18. > :34:20.been in touch with mosques in the area as well

:34:21. > :34:22.as Islington Council. This morning, the scene remained

:34:23. > :34:25.sealed off as counter-terrorism officers, for the third

:34:26. > :34:27.time in as many months, investigate a vehicle being driven

:34:28. > :34:30.into people on London streets Breakfast's Graham Satchell

:34:31. > :34:44.is in Finsbury Park Graham, what's the scene

:34:45. > :35:02.like there at the moment? Is not entirely clear what happened.

:35:03. > :35:07.This story has developed quite a lot overnight. Initially, police

:35:08. > :35:11.described it as a major incident. I think now it has become clearer that

:35:12. > :35:22.once again we are standing at a police cordoned at an attack on

:35:23. > :35:26.innocent civilians. Interesting, it is the counterterrorism branch of

:35:27. > :35:30.police who are investigating this and the Prime Minister Theresa May

:35:31. > :35:33.also describing it as a potential terror attack. There is no doubt

:35:34. > :35:37.among people on the grounds that that is exactly what this is. They

:35:38. > :35:50.are describing it as an act of terrorism. The ground that that is

:35:51. > :35:55.exactly what this is. They are describing it as an act of

:35:56. > :36:00.terrorism. I am seeing that the white van has come and is crashing

:36:01. > :36:06.into people. People are on the floor, the people that they are

:36:07. > :36:11.trying to help. The people that are on the floor, it is pandemonium.

:36:12. > :36:19.People screaming, crying. Did it seem like deliberate attacks? 100%.

:36:20. > :36:23.No doubt this is an attack on the Muslim community. The individual was

:36:24. > :36:27.there waiting and he ploughed down the Muslims. After he did his

:36:28. > :36:33.attack, the police arrested him and he was gloating. He was laughing and

:36:34. > :36:40.the police arrested him and I'm just thinking, like, what kind of

:36:41. > :36:44.individual is that. There has been an increase in Islamaphobia in

:36:45. > :36:49.recent weeks and months. Is that what it feels like to you at the

:36:50. > :36:52.moment? 100%. I would not disagree with that comment. In fact, there

:36:53. > :36:59.was actually another assault upon Muslims in the mosque, an acid

:37:00. > :37:07.attack not too far from here. For me, I don't disagree with that

:37:08. > :37:13.comment. Extreme Islamaphobia has risen and it impacting the Muslim

:37:14. > :37:22.community in a major way. Thank you very much indeed. Just to bring you

:37:23. > :37:28.up to date, we know now that one man has died here at the scene. Eight

:37:29. > :37:32.people have been injured taken to three separate hospitals and a

:37:33. > :37:37.48-year-old white man who was driving a white van has been taken

:37:38. > :37:40.to hospital and they say once he is discharge from hospital he will be

:37:41. > :37:45.taken into custody and then questioned. We know you will be back

:37:46. > :37:48.throughout the morning. We have just woken to police in the last few

:37:49. > :37:49.minutes because there has been questions about police response

:37:50. > :37:58.time. The police said they responded to

:37:59. > :38:00.the attack within ten minutes. There have also been questions.

:38:01. > :38:06.Eyewitnesses talking about perhaps there being more than one person in

:38:07. > :38:10.this van but police are saying at this point they are not looking at

:38:11. > :38:17.other people who were in the van at this point. They responded to the

:38:18. > :38:23.attack on worshippers within ten minutes. The police say that within

:38:24. > :38:28.this early stage, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or

:38:29. > :38:32.reported to police but they also say the investigation continues.

:38:33. > :38:34.Abdirahim Saeed works for our colleagues at the BBC

:38:35. > :38:37.World Service and arrived on the scene shortly

:38:38. > :38:47.Good morning to you. And she for coming in this morning. Can you

:38:48. > :38:54.describe where you were and what happened? Well, I was driving from

:38:55. > :39:01.central London into North London, the area where the incident

:39:02. > :39:08.happened. If a few stops away from where I live. I assumed I arrived

:39:09. > :39:12.with the second wave of police vans and ambulances arriving. As I was

:39:13. > :39:20.coming down the Seven Sisters Road, I saw a huge number of police vans

:39:21. > :39:26.with sirens. I arrived a few seconds later, looked to my left into what

:39:27. > :39:31.was another street and I saw a huge number of people that had arrived

:39:32. > :39:37.and it was a second wave of ambulance services arriving. We saw

:39:38. > :39:41.a few police officers. There was no blocking off yet so I could get

:39:42. > :39:46.close. Two bodies I saw on the ground lying still. I couldn't tell

:39:47. > :39:53.whether they were still alive or dead. People I spoke to who were

:39:54. > :40:00.there, they told me there was at least six other bodies I couldn't

:40:01. > :40:09.see. Was there a van bear? There may have been a group of people outside

:40:10. > :40:15.the mosque. -- was there a van there? The van was driven into a

:40:16. > :40:19.group of people? Ace poacher eyewitnesses and ask what did they

:40:20. > :40:26.exactly see. One turned around and pointed a white van and neither

:40:27. > :40:33.bodies and they said a man was there. They described him as a white

:40:34. > :40:37.man who had driven the car at the eyewitnesses said it was a

:40:38. > :40:43.deliberate attack. The location of the mosque was not exactly, it was

:40:44. > :40:50.another one a few seconds away. There is a cafe fare. People were

:40:51. > :41:00.milling around. -- there is a cafe and Samak. People were in the middle

:41:01. > :41:12.of their brand. People were gathered. A man said there was a

:41:13. > :41:21.white van. There is a bit of confusion. Some said they ran away.

:41:22. > :41:28.Pity he what was saying earlier that police issued an -- did you hear

:41:29. > :41:33.what we said earlier that the police are not looking for anybody else at

:41:34. > :41:38.the moment? I will also ask you about another eyewitness saying the

:41:39. > :41:42.man has been arrested, the 48-year-old man, was held by people

:41:43. > :41:49.at the scene until police arrived. You see any of that? I didn't see

:41:50. > :41:56.any of that. I arrived after that when people told me they saw what

:41:57. > :42:02.happened is about the apprehended by the locals. He was held to the

:42:03. > :42:19.ground and handed to the police and they described what they saw as him

:42:20. > :42:24.smiling and raising his hand in triumph. It will who were there told

:42:25. > :42:36.me they have no doubt that this was to let Brett attack on Muslims. --

:42:37. > :42:40.deliberate. They thought people were congregating outside the mosque but

:42:41. > :42:46.it was the local cafe which is a few seconds away.

:42:47. > :43:00.Thank you for bringing us what you saw. We can't entirely tidy things

:43:01. > :43:05.up but there are a number of reports saying there was a number of

:43:06. > :43:09.suspects at the scene. From what we hear from police, no other suspects

:43:10. > :43:19.from the scene have been a dentist right. They have arrested one 40

:43:20. > :43:31.eight-year-old man. -- no other suspects from the scene. One person

:43:32. > :43:34.has died, eight injured and eyewitnesses are talking about

:43:35. > :43:40.police response time. We have spoken to police and they responded to

:43:41. > :43:44.calls within ten minutes. Also confirming they are not looking for

:43:45. > :43:49.any other suspects is seen. As we have the Prime Minister will be

:43:50. > :44:02.chairing a meeting on Cobra this morning.

:44:03. > :44:13.It is with grim frequency that the Prime Minister will be attending an

:44:14. > :44:17.emergency briefing after an overnight tragedy. I have spoken to

:44:18. > :44:22.Downing Street in the last couple of minutes confirming the Prime

:44:23. > :44:24.Minister is can describing this as a potential terrorist attack and she

:44:25. > :44:29.will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. Her thoughts are

:44:30. > :44:33.with the victims, their families and emergency services at the scene.

:44:34. > :44:38.Overnight tonight, we have also heard from Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour

:44:39. > :44:43.leader. Not just the Labour leader in this incident but also their

:44:44. > :44:46.local MP of Islington in the area. He is totally shocked and has been

:44:47. > :44:51.in touch with the mosques in the area. His thoughts with those in the

:44:52. > :44:55.community affected by this awful event. A much longer post from the

:44:56. > :45:00.Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on face within the last hour, saying the

:45:01. > :45:03.Metropolitan police are responding to what he describes as a horrific

:45:04. > :45:09.terrorist attack on innocent people at Finsbury Park. He adds that while

:45:10. > :45:14.this is an attack on a particular community like the attacks on

:45:15. > :45:17.Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge, it is also an assault on our

:45:18. > :45:22.share of values, tolerance, freedom and respect. Saying that once you

:45:23. > :45:27.don't know the full details, this was clearly a deliberate attack on

:45:28. > :45:28.innocent Londoners many of whom were finishing press during the holy

:45:29. > :45:39.month of Ramadan. We understand from Sadiq Khan that

:45:40. > :45:43.the Metropolitan Police will be deploying more police to reassure

:45:44. > :45:50.communities. The mood was already sombre juju Grenfell Tower last

:45:51. > :45:55.week. -- due to. A sombre mood in the capital. A stretch in time for

:45:56. > :46:01.the Metropolitan Police given what we have seen with the terrorist

:46:02. > :46:04.attacks in the past two months. We know about that from what we are

:46:05. > :46:10.told from the intelligence agencies, the scale of the challenges they are

:46:11. > :46:16.facing up to. There are huge deployments from the police, fire,

:46:17. > :46:23.and ambulance services. Especially after last week with the burning

:46:24. > :46:27.tower. And now Finsbury Park this morning. There is a desire in the

:46:28. > :46:33.police, frequently seen this, they want to increase visibility on the

:46:34. > :46:36.street in order to reassure people. That comes as a hugely logistical

:46:37. > :46:43.problem for the Metropolitan Police, though. Thank you. We will speak to

:46:44. > :46:46.you later. We will bring you up-to-date is done that incident in

:46:47. > :46:52.Finsbury Park through Breakfast this morning. Just a reminder. One man

:46:53. > :46:58.has died and eight have been injured after a van ploughed into people

:46:59. > :47:06.outside of a mosque in north London. One 48-year-old man has been

:47:07. > :47:09.arrested. It appears that the incident happened and people

:47:10. > :47:12.involved in the incident managed to get hold of the driver and

:47:13. > :47:18.essentially hold onto him until police arrived. Police arrived on

:47:19. > :47:23.the scene after receiving 999 calls within ten minutes. This man, a man,

:47:24. > :47:31.was arrested at the scene where this happened. Many victims had left

:47:32. > :47:40.evening prayers, breaking their Ramadan fast early on. There has

:47:41. > :47:45.been a call for increased security around mosques. Sadiq Khan said this

:47:46. > :47:51.morning the Metropolitan Police have already deployed extra police to

:47:52. > :47:56.these areas. We will speak to eyewitnesses and the London Mayor

:47:57. > :48:00.later, keeping you up-to-date with all of the latest. I am afraid it is

:48:01. > :48:05.another morning where we bring you terrible news. But we also have the

:48:06. > :48:12.weather. Good morning. If you are stepping out and have allergies with

:48:13. > :48:15.grass and pollen, the levels are high across the UK today. The

:48:16. > :48:20.exception is in the far north of Scotland. Another hot and sunny day

:48:21. > :48:24.for most of us as well. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so

:48:25. > :48:30.far. The temperature in Greater London was 32.1 Celsius. Yesterday,

:48:31. > :48:34.we had high values over many parts of the UK. The exception being the

:48:35. > :48:39.far north of Scotland where we had and still do have a weather front

:48:40. > :48:43.producing more cloud, some spots of rain, and as a result, it has held

:48:44. > :48:47.back the temperature. That is the scenario this morning. We still have

:48:48. > :48:53.a weather front in the north and western isles. Producing rain. It

:48:54. > :49:00.will weaken through the date copy a lot of dry and a lot of sunny

:49:01. > :49:10.weather. -- through the day. England and Wales, hovering around 25

:49:11. > :49:14.degrees. Fresher in Scotland. Sharp showers in southern Scotland and

:49:15. > :49:18.northern England. If you catch one, it could be thundery. Many of us

:49:19. > :49:23.will mist them. Sharp showers in central part of England.

:49:24. > :49:30.Temperatures warmer than the south-east today, 33 degrees. That

:49:31. > :49:38.will be the warmest day of the year if it happens. 22 in Wales. High UV

:49:39. > :49:42.levels. Northern Ireland, you could see the odd shower this afternoon.

:49:43. > :49:46.Many of us will not get them. Temperature is not as high either.

:49:47. > :49:51.Through the evening, we tend to lose the risk of thunder. Through the

:49:52. > :49:55.night, we get more cloud from the North Sea coming up for eastern

:49:56. > :50:05.counties. Dry weather around the night. A muggy one in Cardiff. 21

:50:06. > :50:08.degrees. Fresh in northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, as

:50:09. > :50:13.the weather front goes out. Tomorrow, cloud associated with the

:50:14. > :50:23.weather front again coming in off the North Sea. Somewhere like Hull

:50:24. > :50:30.or around The Wash generally, 10 degrees lower than today. 31 around

:50:31. > :50:34.these areas today. Tomorrow, 20- 21. A high risk of showers in the

:50:35. > :50:38.south-west tomorrow. There could be thundery as well. A lot of dry

:50:39. > :50:46.weather across the far north of Scotland. As we head into Tuesday

:50:47. > :50:50.evening, we lose those showers. Wednesday itself, rain coming in

:50:51. > :50:57.from the west. Once again, the heat starts to build, and will warm up.

:50:58. > :51:03.Thank you for that. Plenty more weather coming up later on. It

:51:04. > :51:07.really has been a hot weekend. Mostly on the programme this morning

:51:08. > :51:11.we are covering the news overnight that one person has been killed and

:51:12. > :51:16.eight it will injured after a van appears to have driven deliberately

:51:17. > :51:20.in the worshippers at Finsbury Park. I will read you a statement from the

:51:21. > :51:26.police who said they were on the scene within ten minutes of 999

:51:27. > :51:33.calls, at 20 past midnight last night. They had reports of a van

:51:34. > :51:37.colliding with pedestrians. They found and tended to a number of

:51:38. > :51:41.casualties. One man was announced dead at the scene. They are

:51:42. > :51:46.informing next of kin. Eight injured were taken to three separate

:51:47. > :51:51.hospitals. Two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

:51:52. > :51:55.From what we know so far, a van mounted the pavement and struck a

:51:56. > :52:01.number of people just after midnight in Finsbury Park. A 48-year-old man

:52:02. > :52:08.has been arrested. We have heard a statement from Sadiq Khan, who we

:52:09. > :52:12.will speak to later. And also Theresa May, she has said they are

:52:13. > :52:16.treating it as a potential terror attack. There will be a meeting of

:52:17. > :52:22.the Cobra committee, which seems like a regular occurrence now. We

:52:23. > :52:25.have heard this confirmed by eyewitnesses, this man arrested was

:52:26. > :52:29.found and detained by members of the public at the seams to be one of

:52:30. > :52:37.those was Abdul, who says he pins down the attacker until police

:52:38. > :52:51.arrived. -- pinned. It happened at 1220. There was an old man on the

:52:52. > :53:02.corner. We were trying to give him CPR. We came outside the mosque.

:53:03. > :53:18.And, umm, we just heard a van turning into us. He ran over some

:53:19. > :53:22.people. Luckily, I managed to get away. A lot were injured. You

:53:23. > :53:39.managed to get away, but we are told you detained one of the men. When he

:53:40. > :53:50.came out of his van, he wanted to run away. He kept saying "I want to

:53:51. > :53:54.kill Muslims." He came back where he drove over us and I hit him in the

:53:55. > :54:05.stomach and he fell down on the floor. Me and the other guys held

:54:06. > :54:09.him on the ground until he couldn't move until the police came. They

:54:10. > :54:16.took 20 minutes to half an hour. It was a long time. That is absolutely

:54:17. > :54:20.extraordinary. Just describe this man for us. What did he look like?

:54:21. > :54:35.And repeat what he was shouting when you were detaining him. He was

:54:36. > :54:39.saying... He was saying... When we put him on the ground, I emotionally

:54:40. > :54:43.asked him why he did that. You know? You could kill so many people! I did

:54:44. > :54:48.not know how many were killed. I said why did you do that? Why did

:54:49. > :55:04.you do that! You are killing so many people for no reason! This man, you

:55:05. > :55:08.know, he was, umm, he had an Englishman, he looked like a

:55:09. > :55:12.builder, he was a big man. He was in his 50s, I think. Very strong. We

:55:13. > :55:15.couldn't hold him that much, he was very strong. Luckily, there were

:55:16. > :55:24.other people coming up from the mosque who came to help us. How did

:55:25. > :55:37.you alert the police that you had this man? Presumably, the police did

:55:38. > :55:41.not know. People passed by. People came from the mosque and saw the

:55:42. > :55:53.crowd all over the place. We told them call the ambulance, call the

:55:54. > :55:56.police. So, that's when the police came. They did not come until they

:55:57. > :56:00.had backup. That is when they handcuffed him and put him in the

:56:01. > :56:04.van. That is one of so many eyewitnesses we have heard from this

:56:05. > :56:08.morning. We will keep you up-to-date through the programme this morning.

:56:09. > :56:13.That is the main story this morning. Also, Brexit negotiations begin

:56:14. > :56:18.today. We will cover this later on. We will speak to Michael Gove from

:56:19. > :56:25.the Conservative Party and Barry Gardiner from the Labour Party. What

:56:26. > :56:29.does it mean for business? We are out and about at a market in

:56:30. > :56:34.Manchester. Good morning. Good morning. Good morning, everybody. It

:56:35. > :56:40.has been busy this morning. Many people coming to collect different

:56:41. > :56:44.produce for shops and restaurants in the local area. It is busy. I am

:56:45. > :56:49.talking to business is about what they want to hear from negotiations

:56:50. > :56:53.and what they will do. I have a negotiation consultant. How should

:56:54. > :56:58.we approach these? We need to be aware of the complexity of the

:56:59. > :57:01.negotiations. There are years and years and years of negotiations

:57:02. > :57:05.ahead. This goes beyond the two year period that keeps being spoken

:57:06. > :57:09.about. Team discipline is going to be important, making sure everyone

:57:10. > :57:18.is singing from the same hymn sheet. What we are actually seeing is

:57:19. > :57:23.multiple demands. We have to get everyone on the same side. That will

:57:24. > :57:26.be a challenge. We will talk about this later on. Stay with us. We will

:57:27. > :00:45.be here Plenty more on our website

:00:46. > :00:51.at the usual address. For the very latest on Finsbury

:00:52. > :00:57.Park, you can tune into the radio or continue watching the programme.

:00:58. > :01:00.Hello, this is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker.

:01:01. > :01:03.A van drives into a crowd of pedestrians near a north London

:01:04. > :01:05.mosque, killing one person and injuring several others.

:01:06. > :01:10.I saw people on the fall, people running left and right, it was

:01:11. > :01:11.chaos, literally, literally chaos. The incident happened

:01:12. > :01:13.just after midnight. Many of the victims are believed

:01:14. > :01:16.to have just finished evening prayers after breaking

:01:17. > :01:18.their Ramadan fast. This is the scene

:01:19. > :01:24.there this morning, as police continue to deal

:01:25. > :01:27.with what they describe Good morning, it's Monday the 19th

:01:28. > :01:41.of June, we'll have the latest from Finsbury Park

:01:42. > :01:43.throughout the programme. Historic talks begin in Brussels

:01:44. > :01:57.today to take Britain out of the European Union,

:01:58. > :01:59.the government says it marks the start of a new

:02:00. > :02:12.partnership with the EU. And while the politicians start

:02:13. > :02:16.talking, I have come to Smithfield market in Manchester to talk to

:02:17. > :02:20.businesses about what they want from the negotiations.

:02:21. > :02:23.In sport, the American Brooks Koepka wins the US Open.

:02:24. > :02:26.He equalled the tournament's lowest winning score of 16 under par

:02:27. > :02:29.England's Tommy Fleetwood finished fourth.

:02:30. > :02:42.It has been warm. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far.

:02:43. > :02:46.Today it could be even hotter. For most, dry, sunny and hot that in the

:02:47. > :02:47.north-west, there is a weather front so here it is cooler

:02:48. > :02:56.One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to three

:02:57. > :02:59.separate hospitals after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians

:03:00. > :03:04.Theresa May has said police are treating the incident

:03:05. > :03:06.near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack" and counter

:03:07. > :03:13.The Prime Minister has also confirmed she will be chairing

:03:14. > :03:16.a meeting of the cabinet's emergency Cobra Committee later this morning.

:03:17. > :03:18.Officers have cordoned off a large area close

:03:19. > :03:25.Many of the victims are believed to have just left evening prayers,

:03:26. > :03:31.Police first received calls at around twenty past midnight

:03:32. > :03:34.of reports that a vehicle had collided with pedestrians.

:03:35. > :03:35.Emergency services treated a number of casualties

:03:36. > :03:49.The London Ambulance Service deployed sixty medics to the scene -

:03:50. > :03:51.including ambulance crews, advance paramedics and specialist

:03:52. > :03:54.responders, as well as an advance trauma team from London's Air

:03:55. > :04:11.The Metropolitan Police say the driver of the van -

:04:12. > :04:13.a 48-year-old man - has been arrested.

:04:14. > :04:17.The Seven Sisters Road in North London just after midnight.

:04:18. > :04:20.This footage filmed by an eyewitness was recorded moments after a van

:04:21. > :04:22.mounted the pavement and struck several pedestrians.

:04:23. > :04:25.The streets have been filled with worshippers who just left

:04:26. > :04:28.evening prayers at the Finsbury Park mosque and the nearby Muslim Welfare

:04:29. > :04:31.He looked straight, he looked straight like it was towards

:04:32. > :04:41.He basically drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all

:04:42. > :04:44.the Muslims, and as he was coming to them, he hit all of them.

:04:45. > :04:47.Within hours, the Muslim Council of Britain claimed the van

:04:48. > :04:49.was intentionally driven at worshippers.

:04:50. > :04:51.Police say the driver, a 48-year-old man, was found

:04:52. > :04:55.by members of the public and handed over to officers to be arrested.

:04:56. > :04:57.He has since been taken to hospital as a precaution.

:04:58. > :05:02.And I saw a large crowd of people on the pavement.

:05:03. > :05:05.I learned after that a van that was standing up by the traffic

:05:06. > :05:16.lights was the van that mowed the people down.

:05:17. > :05:19.Several ambulances were on the scene soon afterwards with trauma teams

:05:20. > :05:25.In the early hours of the morning, Downing Street issued a statement

:05:26. > :05:27.from Theresa May, saying her thoughts were with all

:05:28. > :05:31.The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is also a local MP,

:05:32. > :05:34.said he was totally shocked and had been in touch with mosques

:05:35. > :05:36.in the area as well as Islington Council.

:05:37. > :05:39.This morning, the scene remained sealed off as counter-terrorism

:05:40. > :05:41.officers, for the third time in as many months,

:05:42. > :05:44.investigate a vehicle being driven into people on London streets

:05:45. > :05:59.Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park

:06:00. > :06:05.Graham, what's the scene like there at the moment?

:06:06. > :06:16.What more can you tell us this morning? It is a grim and tragically

:06:17. > :06:22.familiar scene, unfortunately. We are once again sitting in front of

:06:23. > :06:27.the police cordoned. Once again, a vehicle has been driven into a group

:06:28. > :06:33.of innocent bystanders. The big difference this time, the driver was

:06:34. > :06:37.a white man in a white vehicle who appear to be targeting Muslim

:06:38. > :06:41.worshippers. I think a significant development overnight is that the

:06:42. > :06:44.police are saying it is the counterterrorism branch that are

:06:45. > :06:48.investigating this. The originally described it as a major incident.

:06:49. > :06:52.There is a strong feeling on the grounds that this was an attack, a

:06:53. > :06:58.terrorist attack, plain and simple, by a white man. We are speaking with

:06:59. > :07:04.Hussein Ali who has been here all night. What happened last night? I

:07:05. > :07:07.saw that bang on the main gate and then we looked around and there was

:07:08. > :07:21.a van Gogh in around and people shouting. -- van going around. I ran

:07:22. > :07:33.out to go to the other way. Did it appeared to you to be a deliberate

:07:34. > :07:38.attack? To me, it's obvious. The mosque was full, one o'clock,

:07:39. > :07:44.midnight prayer. The main target was, and intimate it was no

:07:45. > :07:49.accident. Some people are saying the man was smiling and shaking his hand

:07:50. > :07:55.like he was proud. I didn't see that part but... The Muslim Council of

:07:56. > :07:59.Britain this morning are saying there has been an increase in

:08:00. > :08:04.Islamaphobia. That the police need to do more to protect Muslim

:08:05. > :08:09.community. Do you feel that safe on the street? No. Three days ago, I

:08:10. > :08:14.was in the other mosque, praying. I saw nearly 100 people praying and I

:08:15. > :08:20.was thinking, like, all of these media, London Bridge, the Islamic

:08:21. > :08:24.terroristic thermic terrorist. This man chose this place in this area

:08:25. > :08:41.and particularly this area, a mosque with a radical Abu Hamza. It has

:08:42. > :08:45.completely changed now. Any form or shape, doesn't matter what religion

:08:46. > :08:51.they are, they are a person. Some people choose to commit a crime and

:08:52. > :08:59.they choose to commit crime in here, I blamed the media. That's why I

:09:00. > :09:08.feel unsafe. Thank you so much for talking to us. Hussein Ali has been

:09:09. > :09:12.up all night. We do now know that this 48 you are a man was basically

:09:13. > :09:16.detained by people here on the scene before the police arrived and he is

:09:17. > :09:20.now in hospital and will be questioned by the police once he is

:09:21. > :09:27.released and taken into police custody.

:09:28. > :09:42.Just those remarkable accounts from the eyewitnesses. We spoke to Abdul

:09:43. > :09:46.Rahman early this morning and he was there early this morning and helped

:09:47. > :09:48.detained a man. He's the only man who has so far been into custody.

:09:49. > :09:52.We have been getting reaction in since news of the attack broke

:09:53. > :09:57.The Prime Minister Theresa May described the event

:09:58. > :10:11."All my thoughts are with those who have been injured,

:10:12. > :10:14.their loved ones, and the emergency services on the scene."

:10:15. > :10:16.The Leader of the Opposition and the local MP

:10:17. > :10:19.to the incident Jeremy Corbyn Tweeted that he was "totally

:10:20. > :10:22."I've been in touch with the mosques, police

:10:23. > :10:23.and Islington council regarding the incident.

:10:24. > :10:26.My thoughts are with those and the community affected

:10:27. > :10:30.Harun Khan, the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain,

:10:31. > :10:32.described the incident as a terror attack.

:10:33. > :10:34."During the night, ordinary British citizens were set

:10:35. > :10:36.upon while they were going about their lives,

:10:37. > :10:40.My prayers are with the victims and their families.

:10:41. > :10:42.It appears from eye witness accounts that the perpetrator

:10:43. > :10:55.Our political correspondent Chris Mason is in Westminster

:10:56. > :11:12.An emergency meeting being held later this morning? Good morning to

:11:13. > :11:16.you. I was struck watching gradient's report a few minutes ago

:11:17. > :11:21.when he mentioned the grim frequency in which he has found himself

:11:22. > :11:25.standing at police cordoned. The equivalent is the frequency of these

:11:26. > :11:29.Cobra meetings. We seem to be referring to them almost every week.

:11:30. > :11:35.It is the government's emergency committee that has got together

:11:36. > :11:39.where they need to be a co-ordinated response to a major incident. There

:11:40. > :11:43.was a statement from the Prime Minister in the middle of the night

:11:44. > :11:47.saying she will chair this emergency meeting later this morning, adding

:11:48. > :11:52.that all of her thoughts are with the victims, their families and the

:11:53. > :11:55.emergency services on the scene. You are talking about the statesman SIU

:11:56. > :11:59.received from various leaders. Particularly striking workers from

:12:00. > :12:04.Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, describing this as Astro -- horrific

:12:05. > :12:12.terrorist attack on the people of Finsbury Park. Thank you. We are

:12:13. > :12:18.hoping to speak with Michael Gove in about half an hour as well.

:12:19. > :12:25.Obviously, Brexit negotiations begin in Brussels as well. Returning to

:12:26. > :12:29.our main story and the attack that happened outside Finsbury Park

:12:30. > :12:32.mosque this morning. There are conflicting reports about the number

:12:33. > :12:36.of people involved. Police are saying there is only one person who

:12:37. > :12:41.has been arrested and has been taken to hospital. We are hearing

:12:42. > :12:47.extraordinary eyewitness reports about what happened after that the

:12:48. > :12:52.vehicle hit pedestrians. Many of the people standing by what hold of the

:12:53. > :13:03.suspect and detained him until police arrived. We are speaking now

:13:04. > :13:08.with general -- would Daniel Stanford.

:13:09. > :13:14.It took the matter of hours and less than that for the counterterrorism

:13:15. > :13:19.command of the Metropolitan police to take this investigation on and it

:13:20. > :13:23.has been treated as this point as if the driver of this wide band

:13:24. > :13:31.deliberately drove straight into a group of people who were leaving the

:13:32. > :13:35.fast breaking at the end of the day as part of the celebrations of

:13:36. > :13:47.Ramadan. It appears to have been a higher vehicle -- hire van. He drove

:13:48. > :13:52.into an elderly man who was building unwell. There is some confusion this

:13:53. > :13:57.morning. There were two mosques very close to where I'm standing. The

:13:58. > :14:03.Finsbury Park mosque, once infamous that now a fairly standard mosque.

:14:04. > :14:08.And Muslim Welfare House about 30 metres behind me. It looks as if

:14:09. > :14:11.there was people leaving Wilson Welfare House that were particularly

:14:12. > :14:20.caught up in the incident. -- Muslim. People breaking the farce

:14:21. > :14:24.were all around this area. It is a very, very busy of North London even

:14:25. > :14:28.when Ramadan isn't being marked but during Ramadan at this part of the

:14:29. > :14:37.night, it would have been very, very busy.

:14:38. > :14:42.And in many people are turning on and taking their kids to school this

:14:43. > :14:46.morning and maybe turning on their television for the first time this

:14:47. > :14:49.morning. Bringing you up to date, there was an attack last night and

:14:50. > :14:53.the Prime Minister Theresa May is saying it was a suspected terrorist

:14:54. > :14:58.attack. As a major police incident. One man, we believe, a 48-year-old

:14:59. > :15:04.who has been arrested and now treated in hospital. We have had so

:15:05. > :15:06.many statements this morning and we are covering this in-depth as much

:15:07. > :15:19.as we can. A statement has been released saying

:15:20. > :15:28.please stay calm as the investigation establishes all the

:15:29. > :15:32.facts. Pray for those affected and for justice. One person has died and

:15:33. > :15:39.eight have been taken to three separate hospitals. We will take you

:15:40. > :15:45.back to that story later. Also today, the first Brexit negotiations

:15:46. > :15:54.are due to start today when David Davis meets Michel Barnier in

:15:55. > :15:59.Russell is later today -- Brussels. A huge day of negotiations. The

:16:00. > :16:09.start of a long process. What I both sides trying to achieve? -- are.

:16:10. > :16:14.David Davis is laying on the charm pretty thick, saying last night he

:16:15. > :16:20.wants to form a deep and special relationship with the EU, one like

:16:21. > :16:26.no other in history. He is not out all guns blazing. The EU,

:16:27. > :16:32.represented by Rachelle Bayern Munich, given negotiating

:16:33. > :16:38.instructions from the rest of the EU, he says they want to make sure

:16:39. > :16:44.UK and EU nationals have respective rights. -- Michel Barnier. They also

:16:45. > :16:48.want to discuss the cost of living and what happens to the border of

:16:49. > :16:54.Ireland. As you said, this is just the start. A long way to go before

:16:55. > :16:59.the UK officially leaves in March, 2019. We will speak to Barry

:17:00. > :17:04.Gardiner and Michael Gove later on about that, but also about the main

:17:05. > :17:13.story today, the potential terrorist attack in Finsbury Park. Yes. We

:17:14. > :17:21.know this happened close to a mosque in north London. We have heard many

:17:22. > :17:27.eyewitnesses at the attack. This man described the incident.

:17:28. > :17:29.The van literally turned left with no

:17:30. > :17:37.People gathered around the van to lift it up and get the guy out.

:17:38. > :17:39.The dying jumped on it and two literally ran.

:17:40. > :17:43.Not a lot of people were coming out, but as soon as it

:17:44. > :17:45.happened, people were shouting and gathered around.

:17:46. > :17:48.The people surrounded him and apprehended him.

:17:49. > :17:50.He was shouting, "I want to kill all Muslims."

:17:51. > :17:54.This is a terrorist attack whether he a Muslim,

:17:55. > :17:59.I don't want to see tomorrow that he has mental issues.

:18:00. > :18:01.This is categorised as a terrorist, Christian or Muslim.

:18:02. > :18:44.Anyone who hurts or harms or kills people, this is terrorism.

:18:45. > :18:50.We will pick up on some of those thoughts with a security specialist

:18:51. > :18:56.joining us live on the scene in Finsbury Park. We have heard from

:18:57. > :19:01.eyewitnesses. So many people talking to us this morning. It appears that

:19:02. > :19:09.the worshippers were deliberately attacked. Certainly, again, always

:19:10. > :19:13.in the immediate aftermath of these kinds of things, information comes

:19:14. > :19:17.from various sources and we have to sift through it. With the

:19:18. > :19:21.information I have been receiving from the locals, this was a well

:19:22. > :19:26.planned and co-ordinated attack. There are reports of potentially

:19:27. > :19:30.three people in the vehicle. They targeted a time when outside of the

:19:31. > :19:39.Muslim community house, people would be coming out from prayers. From my

:19:40. > :19:44.first assessment, this is clearly a terrorist attack. We know that

:19:45. > :19:52.police are already involved in the negotiation. What are the priorities

:19:53. > :19:57.at this point? Really importantly... And this is beyond the levels of

:19:58. > :20:04.investigation, because certainly the Metropolitan Police and

:20:05. > :20:10.counter-terrorism group will be working at this to rule out

:20:11. > :20:14.candidates, possibly from the far right groups, at the moment, it is

:20:15. > :20:19.important to reassure communities here, as we will be hearing from

:20:20. > :20:22.local reports, this is being dealt with as seriously as any other

:20:23. > :20:27.terrorist attack would be dealt with. It is important the government

:20:28. > :20:31.takes a stance on that. This kind of attack plays directly into the

:20:32. > :20:38.terrorist agenda. Talk to us a little bit about how you stop these

:20:39. > :20:48.attacks, as their difficult to prevent seeing that cars are always

:20:49. > :20:52.on the streets. -- as they are. Absolutely. It is incredibly

:20:53. > :20:55.difficult. That is why Islamic State and other similar groups are going

:20:56. > :20:59.to replicate this kind of attack. Ultimately, getting your hands on a

:21:00. > :21:03.vehicle and driving on streets is something we all do and is virtually

:21:04. > :21:08.impossible to do without various adjustments to the architecture of

:21:09. > :21:13.streets in cities. It will be a constant challenge. But ultimately,

:21:14. > :21:23.in many of these incidences, there seems to be some reconnaissance and

:21:24. > :21:28.advanced planning. Efforts need to be made to stop that. That is not

:21:29. > :21:35.just in security measures, but bear in mind, here in London, we have

:21:36. > :21:43.more CCTV than anywhere else in the world. We need to try to engage with

:21:44. > :21:46.the antiterrorism hotline and report anything that could be in the

:21:47. > :21:52.lead-up to an attack. Thank you very much. We have heard so much. Sadiq

:21:53. > :21:59.Khan said the Metropolitan Police are responding to this horrific

:22:00. > :22:04.terror attack on Finsbury Park. We will hopefully speak to the Mayor of

:22:05. > :22:09.London later on BBC Breakfast. One has died and eight are being treated

:22:10. > :22:13.across three different hospitals. A 48-year-old man has been arrested

:22:14. > :22:17.and is in hospital himself this morning. He drove a fan into people

:22:18. > :22:24.outside a mosque in Finsbury Park this morning. -- van. You will

:22:25. > :22:27.understand we have to push things around this morning due to the

:22:28. > :22:31.breaking news. And now for the weather. Good morning. Another hot

:22:32. > :22:37.and sunny day for most of the UK. Most, because in the north-west, we

:22:38. > :22:43.have a weather front producing rain. Some will be heavy. But as we go

:22:44. > :22:48.south, it will change to fizzle. The chance of a sharp shower in southern

:22:49. > :22:53.Scotland, northern England, and Northern Ireland. You will see one

:22:54. > :22:59.or two showers pop in eastern England and around the Midlands.

:23:00. > :23:05.Again, it will be just an exception. As we go south, highs of 33 degrees

:23:06. > :23:09.in parts of the south-east. Through this evening and overnight, we will

:23:10. > :23:14.lose the showers. Dry weather around. We will bring in more cloud

:23:15. > :23:20.from the North Sea. It will be another sultry night. Sticky. 21 in

:23:21. > :23:25.Cardiff being the overnight low. More fresh further north. Through

:23:26. > :23:31.tomorrow, dry weather. The weather front will come south and things

:23:32. > :23:36.will freshen up behind it. Hull could be 10 degrees lower than

:23:37. > :23:41.today. We could see a high of dirty one in the south-west with a risk of

:23:42. > :23:47.showers later in the day. -- 31. Thank you. If you have been watching

:23:48. > :23:51.us, you will know that the programme is dominated I what happened in

:23:52. > :23:58.Finsbury Park. We will keep you up-to-date on that. In other news,

:23:59. > :24:00.we start discussions to leave the EU today with David Davis talking to

:24:01. > :24:15.Michel Barnier in Brussels. I want to get your response to what

:24:16. > :24:21.we have been speaking about this morning, the terrible attack in

:24:22. > :24:25.Finsbury Park. Yes, look, I think this terrorist attack is absolutely

:24:26. > :24:34.vile. And what it does is it actually will be welcomed by those

:24:35. > :24:40.who are the extremists perpetrating other terrorist attacks. This would

:24:41. > :24:44.appear to have been a revenge attack from what eyewitnesses are saying.

:24:45. > :24:50.And, of course, that is precisely the objective of terrorism. They

:24:51. > :24:55.want to divide us and ring hatred between different elements of our

:24:56. > :24:59.community. And it is so important we do not let them do that. We must

:25:00. > :25:04.stand united against all forms of hatred and all forms of terrorism. I

:25:05. > :25:08.am sure you can understand what we have been hearing from eyewitnesses

:25:09. > :25:11.concerned and worried, fearing for the rain safety, especially those

:25:12. > :25:17.Muslims who feel deliberately targeted by this. -- their own.

:25:18. > :25:25.Exactly. Eyewitness accounts have suggested this would appear to have

:25:26. > :25:28.been an Islamophobic attack. It was clearly directed against worshippers

:25:29. > :25:35.at the mosque. And if that is in fact the case, then those from

:25:36. > :25:39.Islamic State and Daesh will be cheering, because they do not care

:25:40. > :25:45.about the lives of the people that they mow down. They mow down

:25:46. > :25:52.indiscriminately, whether they are Muslim, Christian, Jew, or Hindu.

:25:53. > :25:56.They just want to destroy the way of life we have in this country, which

:25:57. > :26:08.is about tolerance, openness, engaging with each other in respect.

:26:09. > :26:12.That is what they want to destroy. And thus by this sort of revenge

:26:13. > :26:15.attack, as it would appear, this is exactly what terrorism wants to do,

:26:16. > :26:20.start further terrorism. We must not let it. It is horrible to talk to

:26:21. > :26:27.you about this on a day when it is the start of Brexit talks.

:26:28. > :26:34.Understandably, what has happened in Finsbury Park is the first thing we

:26:35. > :26:38.have to talk about. Can I ask you about two different points of view

:26:39. > :26:42.coming from Iran party in the last 24 hours? The Shadow Home Secretary

:26:43. > :26:47.yesterday, I will read you comment from him and John McDonnell as well.

:26:48. > :26:54.He supports leaving the single market and ending free movement, but

:26:55. > :26:58.wants to leave the custom union on the table. And John McDonnell said

:26:59. > :27:11.yesterday I don't care how we get it as long as we get access to the

:27:12. > :27:14.single market para free. -- tariff. There is obviously a difference in

:27:15. > :27:20.the Labour Party. What is happening? The first thing I want to say is

:27:21. > :27:26.today is an important day for the UK and Europe as a whole. I wish both

:27:27. > :27:31.David Davis and Michel Barnier well in these negotiations to be we want

:27:32. > :27:38.a positive outcome for both sides. -- negotiations. We want to do this

:27:39. > :27:42.positively. That is the first thing. With regards to the points you made,

:27:43. > :27:48.both of my colleagues are saying the same thing, it is outcomes that

:27:49. > :28:01.matter. It is the tariff free access to the single market, making sure we

:28:02. > :28:03.have no increased burdens, tariff burdens or non-tariff barriers to

:28:04. > :28:10.trade that is absolutely essential. That is what the government needs to

:28:11. > :28:15.negotiate. That is what my party needs to negotiate and what it would

:28:16. > :28:20.if it was in power. We need to talk about the structures and say it has

:28:21. > :28:24.to be this and it has to be that, that is secondary. The point is it

:28:25. > :28:28.has to be the best deal for jobs in the economy that we can possibly

:28:29. > :28:32.get. And that in a different way was exactly what both of my colleagues

:28:33. > :28:40.were saying. Thank you very much for your time this morning. I appreciate

:28:41. > :32:02.your time on that and talking about Finsbury Park as well this

:32:03. > :32:05.I'm back with the latest from the BBC London Newsroom

:32:06. > :32:14.Hello, this is Breakfast with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker.

:32:15. > :32:18.One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to hospital

:32:19. > :32:21.after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians near a mosque

:32:22. > :32:31.Theresa May has said police are treating the incident

:32:32. > :32:33.near Finsbury Park "as a potential terrorist attack" and counter

:32:34. > :32:37.The Prime Minister has also confirmed she will be chairing

:32:38. > :32:40.a meeting of the cabinet's emergency Cobra Committee later this morning.

:32:41. > :32:42.Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park

:32:43. > :33:02.Graham, what's the scene like there at the moment?

:33:03. > :33:11.The resistance of depressing deja vu. We are once again standing at a

:33:12. > :33:14.police cordon. We are near the Arsenal football ground on Seven

:33:15. > :33:22.Sisters Road and next to two mosques. The Finsbury Park mosque

:33:23. > :33:26.and the Muslim Welfare House. Police initially described it as a major

:33:27. > :33:30.incident but as the night went on, very quickly I think in these

:33:31. > :33:33.circumstances, the police are now saying it is counterterrorism

:33:34. > :33:38.officers that are investigating. Theresa May is saying it a potential

:33:39. > :33:41.terrorist attack. No doubt amongst the people here who witnessed it,

:33:42. > :33:46.they think it was deliberate and targeted. The big difference this

:33:47. > :33:50.time, of course, compared to the other times when a man has driven a

:33:51. > :33:54.vehicle into people is that this was a white man and the victims were

:33:55. > :33:59.Muslim worshippers who had just come out other mosque. But have a quick

:34:00. > :34:04.chat with Hashem. He is from Tunisia, in which is not his best

:34:05. > :34:13.language. What did you see? I see the person with the car and many

:34:14. > :34:22.people. One person, I think he died and people with blood. When he

:34:23. > :34:28.stopped the car, one person from Algeria, he catch him out from the

:34:29. > :34:37.car and other guys, one Muslim guys, would them down and he told everyone

:34:38. > :34:43.not anyone beat him. Just waiting for the police. So he drove

:34:44. > :34:53.deliberately to this group of people. Did he aimed directly?

:34:54. > :35:04.Direct yes. Will you scared? Leigh yes, I was scared. First time I see

:35:05. > :35:10.like that. Blood. One person I see die, I never see like that. I want

:35:11. > :35:19.ambulance, something, I ask people move back. Think if talking to us.

:35:20. > :35:25.One of the many people who witnessed this terrible incident. We do now

:35:26. > :35:28.know that one person has died, aged people are injured and in three

:35:29. > :35:32.separate hospitals across North London. The man who has been

:35:33. > :35:36.arrested by police is currently in hospital but police say they will

:35:37. > :35:41.start questioning him once he is released and in police custody. That

:35:42. > :35:48.is green satchel he was outside the mosque in Finsbury Park this morning

:35:49. > :35:50.where the attack took place -- Graeme Satchell.

:35:51. > :35:53.Adil Rana was at the mosque when the attack took place

:35:54. > :36:02.As Wilson is, we do feel safe walking the streets. I have

:36:03. > :36:08.brothers, mothers. -- as Muslims. When we go out, we stay vigilant,

:36:09. > :36:11.stay safe. As Muslims, growing up in the UK, we don't feel safe to sing

:36:12. > :36:16.our religion and why is it like that? The question that is always

:36:17. > :36:20.asked in the medium, what can be done by the government for us to

:36:21. > :36:27.feel safe and the truth is that nothing. -- practising our religion.

:36:28. > :36:33.Nothing can be done about it, nothing at all.

:36:34. > :36:40.We also talked to Omar who was at the mosque breaking his fast. I came

:36:41. > :36:49.at sunset time to break my fast. I am praying. After that, I am just

:36:50. > :36:54.seeing the white band that is coming and crashing into people, people are

:36:55. > :37:01.on the floor, the people that there are trying to help and it is

:37:02. > :37:05.pandemonium. People screaming, people crying. Did it seem like a

:37:06. > :37:12.deliberate attack? Irra 100% that this was a deliberate attack on the

:37:13. > :37:14.Muslim community. -- 100%. The individual came in and ploughed into

:37:15. > :37:17.Muslims. We can hear now from two people

:37:18. > :37:25.who were close-by when it happened. I just saw people on the floor,

:37:26. > :37:31.people running left and right, it was chaos at literally, literally

:37:32. > :37:37.chaos. As he hit the people, one of them ran out and police came quick

:37:38. > :37:49.and thank God for the police, they can quick. A lot of people got hurt.

:37:50. > :37:56.It looked straight Lachie was towards Muslims. -- like he was

:37:57. > :38:00.going towards Muslims. He drove straight up the pavement and towards

:38:01. > :38:05.Muslims. He hit all of them and they think one of them died. One of them

:38:06. > :38:12.died straightaway. And then the rest are in a bad condition. How many

:38:13. > :38:18.people did you see lying injured in the ground. Seven or eight.

:38:19. > :38:28.Seriously injured. As the police came, I think they got it under

:38:29. > :38:32.control. A man was let loose defender telling us. We don't know

:38:33. > :38:40.if we are safe. We are seeing cars going about, I do know who it could

:38:41. > :38:44.be. Is this a terrorist? I literally saw the van, the doors were open. I

:38:45. > :38:50.heard the bang from inside. Literally, a came behind him. Next

:38:51. > :39:06.minute, the phone and making a snap a video, formed. -- boom.

:39:07. > :39:13.We can speak now to Cabinet member Michael Gove. What is your response

:39:14. > :39:17.given what has happened? I'm absolutely horrified it is

:39:18. > :39:21.disgusting. I really feel for those who have been caught up in it and

:39:22. > :39:25.they want to seem a decent sympathies to those who have been

:39:26. > :39:29.affected and those families who will be grieving as a result of this. The

:39:30. > :39:35.whole point is, these people who were at a place of worship and it

:39:36. > :39:39.should be absolutely sacrosanct. Everything about it looks like a

:39:40. > :39:43.terrorist act and am glad that the Prime Minister is getting all the

:39:44. > :39:47.top security team together at her Cobra meeting this morning to see

:39:48. > :39:52.exactly what we can do in order to provide reassurance and support to

:39:53. > :39:57.people who are grieving and who have lost, as a result of this

:39:58. > :40:01.unspeakable act of evil. Will be at -- will there be more police

:40:02. > :40:08.protection for worshippers? Given that we need adequate protection

:40:09. > :40:14.particularly for people who are at a special time, celebrating their

:40:15. > :40:23.faith. --I think we need adequate protection. People have the right to

:40:24. > :40:27.lead their lives in peace. We have heard from the Council of Britain

:40:28. > :40:31.this morning saying people in the Muslim committee would have seen

:40:32. > :40:36.this coming. What you say to that? We need to get all the facts that

:40:37. > :40:39.are absolutely sympathise to those that are affected by this and I

:40:40. > :40:43.think one of the things about Britain is that we ensure that

:40:44. > :40:47.individuals were going about their daily lives, whether they are

:40:48. > :40:55.worshipping, breaking their fast for celebrating their faith, should have

:40:56. > :40:59.the absolute guarantee and knowledge that they're secure and safe in

:41:00. > :41:05.Britain and valued in Britain. London already, we are all very

:41:06. > :41:09.aware, was in a sombre mood, particularly what happened at

:41:10. > :41:13.Grenfell Tower. Dew think the government response was tardy? -- do

:41:14. > :41:17.you think. Bello the Prime Minister has said the response all of --

:41:18. > :41:26.overall was not good enough -- the Prime Minister. I spent yesterday by

:41:27. > :41:31.the side of the fire site. I was also speaking to a teacher who had

:41:32. > :41:37.been directly affected. Some of the children who he cares for a missing

:41:38. > :41:42.at the moment. Those of us in government are understandably

:41:43. > :41:44.determined to make sure we act more effectively into speaking

:41:45. > :41:49.personally, I am distraught about what happened. I used to live very,

:41:50. > :41:53.very near to their and it is an area I know well and my heart goes out to

:41:54. > :41:58.those affected are the most important thing now is that we do

:41:59. > :42:03.everything we can as a government to make sure people are supported

:42:04. > :42:07.through this very difficult period. Why were recommendations not acted

:42:08. > :42:11.upon and will that change? I think we need to look exactly at that

:42:12. > :42:16.point you rates. Recommendations have been made in the past about how

:42:17. > :42:19.we can make people safer. It appears as though the recommendations did

:42:20. > :42:25.not have the effect they should have done. We have got to ask why and to

:42:26. > :42:28.learn from that. The reasonably more determined than me to get to the

:42:29. > :42:35.bottom of this because it is absolutely horrific and unforgivable

:42:36. > :42:41.situation to have in the heart of our capital in a 21st-century.

:42:42. > :42:45.Facing the terrible disaster and its aftermath. Right now, people are

:42:46. > :42:51.living in similar blocks so how soon can beat things be changed? Change

:42:52. > :42:56.can't come soon enough. -- how soon can things be changed? The Prime

:42:57. > :43:03.Minister is setting up a team of the very, best people to lecture we can

:43:04. > :43:07.provide support not just by the families affected in Kensington but

:43:08. > :43:12.also people in housing across the country with the reassurance that is

:43:13. > :43:16.definite. -- to make sure. Do you think the Prime Minister in this

:43:17. > :43:27.rate the public mood? Allan I think questions about mood at this --I

:43:28. > :43:30.think questions about mood are... Commentators can make judgements

:43:31. > :43:34.about this kind of thing. I think the most important thing for me to

:43:35. > :43:38.do as a politician is to play my part in making sure that change

:43:39. > :43:41.comes and that we safeguard and protect people in vulnerable

:43:42. > :43:44.circumstances. Important negotiations begin today with regard

:43:45. > :43:49.to Brexit. You think the government's that is weakened by

:43:50. > :43:53.what happened in the general election? The general election is

:43:54. > :43:57.not what I or any Conservative would have wanted that during the course

:43:58. > :44:01.of the election, Conservatives and Labour argued that we should leave

:44:02. > :44:04.the European Union. We should they longer be subjected to what is

:44:05. > :44:07.called the single market, effectively, the jurisdiction of the

:44:08. > :44:13.European Court of Justice. And that we should take back control of our

:44:14. > :44:17.laws, our borders and indeed take control of the opportunity to forge

:44:18. > :44:21.new trade deals. Even though the Conservatives don't have a majority,

:44:22. > :44:25.the majority of the people in the House of Commons were elected on the

:44:26. > :44:30.basis of making a success of Britain leaving the EU. You talk about

:44:31. > :44:34.commentators. Commentators in the Daily Telegraph and the Times today

:44:35. > :44:38.say Theresa May's position is still at risk. Would you throw your hat

:44:39. > :44:45.into the ring? Elena added is at risk all. --I don't think it is at

:44:46. > :44:50.risk at all. The point is, David Davis is going to Brussels today,

:44:51. > :44:56.making sure that the outcome of British people voted for just under

:44:57. > :45:00.a year ago is delivered and there is a series of Golden opportunities for

:45:01. > :45:03.us outside the EU. We can take back control of our fishing orders and

:45:04. > :45:07.lecture we have sea of opportunity out there so we can revive an

:45:08. > :45:11.industry that has suffered during the time we have been in the

:45:12. > :45:13.European Union. We can have better environmental protection and also

:45:14. > :45:16.make sure our farmers are better supported than before. We can have

:45:17. > :45:20.new trade deals with countries across the world which enabled the

:45:21. > :45:25.ingenuity and creativity of the British people to operate in a far

:45:26. > :45:29.broader canvas. Also, we can have politicians that are more directly

:45:30. > :45:34.accountable to all of us as a result of making sure that decisions which

:45:35. > :45:39.are intimately involved in the lives of all of us are taken here by

:45:40. > :45:45.people who are elected by us rather than distant politicians who we

:45:46. > :45:49.didn't choose and can't kick out. Do you have leadership ambitions? Note,

:45:50. > :45:53.is the short answer. More importantly, I need to make sure we

:45:54. > :46:02.can make a success of Britain leaving the EU. The important thing,

:46:03. > :46:06.I think, instead of looking at the commentator froth that you alluded

:46:07. > :46:10.to earlier, let's have a serious, to -- conversation about what is

:46:11. > :46:16.available to us being outside the EU.

:46:17. > :46:27.Michael Gove speaking about Brexit, his party, and the suspected terror

:46:28. > :46:33.attack outside Finsbury Park Mosque around midnight last night. Eight

:46:34. > :46:38.have been treated at three different hospitals, one has died, and a

:46:39. > :46:44.48-year-old man has been arrested after driving his van into these

:46:45. > :46:50.people outside of their mosque around midnight after they were

:46:51. > :47:05.praying overnight having broken their fast for Ramadan. We believe

:47:06. > :47:10.that the van was driven into people outside the Muslim Welfare House.

:47:11. > :47:14.They released a statement saying all of our prayers go to those injured

:47:15. > :47:18.and passed. The Muslim community is shocked. They have said they have

:47:19. > :47:22.worked hard for decades to build a peaceful and tolerant community and

:47:23. > :47:34.they condemn any act of hate to divide the unified community. They

:47:35. > :47:38.appeal for calm and say it is not helpful to speculate. They say they

:47:39. > :47:41.have met with the council and local MP, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and

:47:42. > :47:45.thank them for their support. The programme is donated by that this

:47:46. > :47:49.morning, but we are trying to keep up-to-date with various things. --

:47:50. > :47:55.dominated. And that includes the weather. It is glorious. That is

:47:56. > :48:00.correct. It has been high temperatures for many of us this

:48:01. > :48:08.morning already. It is 23 already in Heathrow. Bristol, not far behind.

:48:09. > :48:14.Belfast, 15. For many of us today, sunny and warm, hot, depending on

:48:15. > :48:21.where you are. The other thing is the pollen level. It is high across

:48:22. > :48:27.the UK except in the north. That is where we have the weather front and

:48:28. > :48:33.rain. It is also between ten and 12. A fresh start for you. The extent of

:48:34. > :48:37.the sunshine you can see. The temperature will rise rapidly

:48:38. > :48:41.through the morning, reaching the high 20s into the low 30s for some

:48:42. > :48:50.of us. South-west England, certainly into the high 20s today. 29 here. A

:48:51. > :48:57.lot of sunshine. It will always be fresher on the coastline. In the

:48:58. > :49:05.south-east, 33. Some showers might develop in central and eastern

:49:06. > :49:09.areas. Hit and miss. If you see them in southern Scotland, there could be

:49:10. > :49:13.heavy. The same for Northern Ireland. Many will not have them all

:49:14. > :49:18.together. There will be dry weather around. It will be that bit more

:49:19. > :49:24.fresh. Wales once again. Highs of up to 29. Through the evening and

:49:25. > :49:29.overnight, the risk of showers tends to fade. A lot of dry weather

:49:30. > :49:35.around. It will be another sticky night, especially so across England

:49:36. > :49:39.and Wales. Cardiff, for example, not dropping lower than 20. Scotland,

:49:40. > :49:46.Northern Ireland, a weather front coming south. Fresh conditions

:49:47. > :49:49.following on behind. Tomorrow, this is the weather front. A week feature

:49:50. > :49:58.producing cloud in parts of eastern and central England. -- weak. Not as

:49:59. > :50:05.hot tomorrow. Hull, 10 degrees down on the day. The Wash as well. 20-

:50:06. > :50:09.21. The highest temperature is still in the south, especially the

:50:10. > :50:16.south-west of the you can see in these areas, south Wales, thundery

:50:17. > :50:20.showers. If you catch one, it will be heavy. Wednesday, rain in the

:50:21. > :50:27.north of the country. The heat will build from the south once more.

:50:28. > :50:32.Hull, Tuesday, dropping in temperature, picking up again on

:50:33. > :50:36.Wednesday. Will allow Scott, for the first part of the week right until

:50:37. > :50:44.Ladies Day, quite hot and still dry and sunny. -- Royal Ascot. Thank

:50:45. > :50:53.you. We will see you in half an hour. It is one of those mornings I

:50:54. > :51:01.am afraid we're giving you sad news. A band hit a cloud of pedestrians

:51:02. > :51:13.near midnight last night killing one person and injuring eight others. --

:51:14. > :51:15.van hit a crowd. We are joined by the Ramadan Organisation. It appears

:51:16. > :51:21.people were deliberately targeted in the attack. What is your response?

:51:22. > :51:25.Obviously shocking. Once again we are here. Innocent lives have been

:51:26. > :51:32.lost on our streets. We have to say enough is enough. It doesn't matter

:51:33. > :51:35.if it is Islamic State, far right extremism, human life is sacred. We

:51:36. > :51:44.have to reflect on our language, how we debate issues, we all have to

:51:45. > :51:49.come together. It is one year since Jo Cox. It brings it home to you

:51:50. > :51:57.that behind every political event, people are involved. I have not

:51:58. > :52:03.slept. Sorry. We appreciate that. It has been a long night and continues

:52:04. > :52:06.into a long morning for you as well. Can I read you something from the

:52:07. > :52:11.Chief Executive of the Muslim council? He says people in the

:52:12. > :52:17.community will have seen this happening. What does he mean? There

:52:18. > :52:21.is rampant Islamophobia. Look at the commentators, you know who they are,

:52:22. > :52:33.I will not name them, they do not reflect on the language they use. As

:52:34. > :52:41.I said, there is a comedy awry say, there is an increase in these events

:52:42. > :52:49.near mosques. -- dare I say. Many in the Muslim committee have been

:52:50. > :52:51.banging their heads against walls to ministers saying take this

:52:52. > :52:57.seriously. I hope the Prime Minister recognises that. There is feeling

:52:58. > :53:01.there this morning, as well as in London over the past few weeks. What

:53:02. > :53:04.would you say to them? Stay together and don't let terrorism divide us.

:53:05. > :53:10.Whatever your background is, whatever your faith, we are British

:53:11. > :53:15.people. Our values of tolerance and respect are stronger than them. You

:53:16. > :53:21.mentioned the murder of Jo Cox. Her husband, Brendan Cox, has been, as

:53:22. > :53:27.you said, he released a statement on social media this morning. He said

:53:28. > :53:43.when Islamic terrorists attack us, we seek out hate speech that keeps

:53:44. > :53:47.them going. We must do the same today for far right extremism. Yes.

:53:48. > :53:55.We have to call out these hate preachers. To show you my timeline,

:53:56. > :54:00.the amount of hatred I have received in the last 12 hours is shocking.

:54:01. > :54:13.But that is common for people in places like I hold. And now, our

:54:14. > :54:20.correspondent has been speaking to Amber Rudd about this. She was asked

:54:21. > :54:24.if the attacker was known. Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, said we do

:54:25. > :54:28.not know this at this stage. That is the latest we have from the Home

:54:29. > :54:33.Secretary, Amber Rudd, this morning, from our correspondent, Chris Mason.

:54:34. > :54:39.That story is dominating the programme. We will keep you

:54:40. > :54:45.up-to-date. But also the day, Brexit negotiations begin. -- today. What

:54:46. > :54:50.does it mean good morning. Good morning. I am in Manchester, at the

:54:51. > :54:55.markets. They are finishing up this morning. Dots of people have been

:54:56. > :55:00.buying produce. This is a wholesale market. -- lots. They have been

:55:01. > :55:05.buying stocks and supplies for restaurants and shops. I have been

:55:06. > :55:08.speaking to businesses about what they want to hear from Brexit

:55:09. > :55:14.negotiations and what they will involve. We have Natalie, who helps

:55:15. > :55:18.people negotiate, including companies all over the world. What

:55:19. > :55:25.is the key? Managing complexity. That is a huge issue. We had years

:55:26. > :55:30.of negotiations to come. Many issues to be negotiated. We have to be

:55:31. > :55:35.flexible and manage this. Two years will not be enough. We have to be

:55:36. > :55:40.flexible on the timeline. What are the key things you are saying to

:55:41. > :55:44.people when you advise them? Being prepared, planning effectively,

:55:45. > :55:47.understanding all of the issues, and recognising it is not always the

:55:48. > :55:52.really big issues that will swing whether a deal gets done, it is

:55:53. > :55:56.often the more small issues that no one thinks about that will hold

:55:57. > :56:00.things up. We will see this happen over the months and years to come

:56:01. > :56:04.with things we did not anticipate being as big as they are. It will

:56:05. > :56:09.take longer than we think? The divorce proceedings, the Brexit

:56:10. > :56:13.proceedings, it is meant to be two years but I think it will be longer.

:56:14. > :56:18.The trade deals after that as well. All of this is creating uncertainty.

:56:19. > :56:23.We have talked about this before. Businesses worry about uncertainty.

:56:24. > :56:28.What else are the worrying about? What they are looking at is

:56:29. > :56:31.uncertainty and stability and clarity. That is difficult in an

:56:32. > :56:37.environment like this. Governments can help by stressing the importance

:56:38. > :56:40.of the economy during the heart of the Brexit negotiations. The

:56:41. > :56:44.messages we have gotten from the government is highly political. It

:56:45. > :56:51.is not clear that the economic and business means are at the forefront.

:56:52. > :56:56.This could take ages. It could. The government could help spelling out

:56:57. > :57:01.the kinds of things it is looking for in this. They have been clear

:57:02. > :57:07.since the Prime Minister talked about this. Getting outside of the

:57:08. > :57:12.EU, the single market, et cetera. We have to talk about the roots of how

:57:13. > :57:19.we get where we are today. It is about getting the benefits of the

:57:20. > :00:38.deal. Thank you for your time this morning. That is

:00:39. > :00:41.I'm back with the latest from the BBC London Newsroom

:00:42. > :00:48.Hello, is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker...

:00:49. > :00:51.A van drives into a crowd of pedestrians near a north London

:00:57. > :01:03.This is a terrorist attack, whether he's a Muslim or a Christian, this

:01:04. > :01:06.is a terrorist attack. The attack happened

:01:07. > :01:08.just after midnight. Many of the victims are believed

:01:09. > :01:10.to have just finished evening prayers after breaking

:01:11. > :01:11.their Ramadan fast. This is the scene there this

:01:12. > :01:18.morning, as police continue to deal with what they describe

:01:19. > :01:35.as a "major incident". Good morning, it's Monday

:01:36. > :01:37.the 19th of June, we'll have the latest from Finsbury Park

:01:38. > :01:39.throughout the programme. Historic talks begin in Brussels

:01:40. > :01:46.today to take Britain out of the European Union,

:01:47. > :01:49.the government says it marks the start of a new partnership

:01:50. > :02:03.with the EU. Good morning and while the

:02:04. > :02:08.politicians start talking I've come to Smith mailed -- Smithfield Market

:02:09. > :02:14.to talk to businesses about what they want from the discussions.

:02:15. > :02:24.Temperatures will peak at 33 degrees in the south-east, the rain easing

:02:25. > :02:27.as we go through the day, but feeling fresher in some areas. I'll

:02:28. > :02:31.have more in 15 minutes. One man has been killed and eight

:02:32. > :02:37.people have been taken to three separate hospitals after a van drove

:02:38. > :02:40.into a crowd of pedestrians Theresa May has said police

:02:41. > :02:44.are treating the incident near Finsbury Park "as a potential

:02:45. > :02:46.terrorist attack" and counter The Prime Minister has also

:02:47. > :02:50.confirmed she will be chairing a meeting of the cabinet's emergency

:02:51. > :02:56.Cobra Committee later this morning. Police first received calls

:02:57. > :02:58.at around twenty past midnight of reports that a vehicle had

:02:59. > :03:00.collided with pedestrians Many of the victims are believed

:03:01. > :03:05.to have just left evening prayers, The Metropolitan Police say

:03:06. > :03:11.the driver of the van - a 48 year old man -

:03:12. > :03:14.has been arrested. The Seven Sisters Road

:03:15. > :03:22.in North London just after midnight. This footage filmed by an eyewitness

:03:23. > :03:25.was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement

:03:26. > :03:31.and struck several pedestrians. The streets had been filled

:03:32. > :03:35.with worshippers who just left evening prayers at the Finsbury Park

:03:36. > :03:37.mosque and the nearby He looked straight,

:03:38. > :03:44.he looked straight like it He basically drove on the pavement,

:03:45. > :03:51.coming straight towards all the Muslims, and as he was coming

:03:52. > :03:55.to them, he hit all of them. Within hours, the Muslim Council

:03:56. > :03:57.of Britain claimed the van was Police say the driver,

:03:58. > :04:02.a 48-year-old man, was found by members of the public and handed

:04:03. > :04:07.over to officers to be arrested. He has since been taken

:04:08. > :04:10.to hospital as a precaution. And I saw a large crowd

:04:11. > :04:23.of people on the pavement. I learned after that a van

:04:24. > :04:26.that was standing by the traffic lights was the van that mowed

:04:27. > :04:28.the people down. Several ambulances were on the scene

:04:29. > :04:41.soon afterwards with trauma teams Theresa May says police are treating

:04:42. > :04:46.this as a potential terrorist attack. The local MP and Labour

:04:47. > :04:50.leader Jeremy Corbyn said he'd been in touch with Islington Council and

:04:51. > :04:54.local mosques in the area. This morning the scene remained sealed

:04:55. > :04:59.off as counterterrorism officers for the third time in as many months to

:05:00. > :05:02.investigate a vehicle driven into people on London streets with deadly

:05:03. > :05:09.consequences. Craig Dawson, BBC News.

:05:10. > :05:11.Breakfast's Graham Satchell is in Finsbury Park

:05:12. > :05:23.A very hefty police presence there this morning.

:05:24. > :05:32.You can see police vans obscuring the view, we are close to Arsenal

:05:33. > :05:36.football ground, something terribly familiar at about this, another

:05:37. > :05:40.vehicle driven into a group of innocent bystanders on a pavement,

:05:41. > :05:45.this time the key difference, it was a fight man driving a white van who

:05:46. > :05:50.targeted Muslim worshippers who had just been to a mosque. To give you a

:05:51. > :05:54.quick idea, there are two mosques here, Muslim well for house, one

:05:55. > :06:00.most people were standing outside and Finsbury Park mosque. Let's talk

:06:01. > :06:06.to all Mahut has been here all night, tell me what you saw.

:06:07. > :06:12.Obviously I had been in the locality praying and breaking my fast in the

:06:13. > :06:17.mosque, I ate a little bit more afterwards, I came out, I went to

:06:18. > :06:23.the shop, when I came back I have seen pandemonium break-out, people

:06:24. > :06:26.calling me and asking me your defence we parked and I am telling

:06:27. > :06:31.them, I've seen come off lots of cold... The assailant being held,

:06:32. > :06:37.you understand, by people, the local community. I have seen people

:06:38. > :06:43.screaming, crying, total anarchy. And I saw police grab the individual

:06:44. > :06:48.and arrest him as well. From what you could tell, did this look to use

:06:49. > :06:52.like a deliberate, targeted attack? There's no doubt in my mind this was

:06:53. > :06:56.definitely targeted towards the Muslim community that live here.

:06:57. > :07:02.There are two mosques here, we are in the last ten days of Ramadan, the

:07:03. > :07:06.mosques will be more overloaded than they usually aren't because the

:07:07. > :07:13.mosque becomes packed during the last ten days of the night, you

:07:14. > :07:18.understand, when that is happening, this individual, he sees Muslims,

:07:19. > :07:24.innocent, pride, law-abiding citizens and he has targeted them,

:07:25. > :07:27.you understand? What it's done to the community, it's absolutely

:07:28. > :07:33.destroyed the community, devastated, the community is deeply saddened. Or

:07:34. > :07:37.more, thank you so much. You have been up all night and witnessed

:07:38. > :07:44.terrible things. The police are saying that this man is now in

:07:45. > :07:49.hospital. -- Omar. He will be questioned once he is released from

:07:50. > :07:54.hospital and I am just going to be joined, actually, by Abdul. Good

:07:55. > :07:57.morning. I understand you were involved in wrestling this man out

:07:58. > :08:04.of his vehicle, can you tell me more? The man came from his van to

:08:05. > :08:11.run away and two more... I don't know, bad to the people, and people

:08:12. > :08:15.were coming over behind him to get him down to the ground. He came past

:08:16. > :08:23.my side, I tackled him down to the ground. With the help of other

:08:24. > :08:28.people, so we managed to... You got him on the ground? What was he

:08:29. > :08:33.saying? He was saying when he was running, I am going to kill more

:08:34. > :08:38.people. Then he was on the ground I asked him, why did you do that, why?

:08:39. > :08:45.Innocent people. And he goes, I want to kill Muslims. I want to kill

:08:46. > :08:51.Muslims. And kill me. And I said why did you do that? A terrifying

:08:52. > :09:01.incident to be involved in. It is. I thought, I was just... In my

:09:02. > :09:06.imagination... I was just, like, people on the floor. Do you think

:09:07. > :09:14.this was a deliberate attack, did you feel you are being targeted?

:09:15. > :09:19.100%. The way he was driving on the corner, when we were on the floor

:09:20. > :09:23.with the old man who was trying, trying to get him CPR... We should

:09:24. > :09:29.explain, you had come out of the mosque... We came next, where it

:09:30. > :09:34.happened, coffee, me and my friends were meeting, we saw this man on the

:09:35. > :09:38.floor, we said let's go and see him... It was completely separate,

:09:39. > :09:43.an elderly man had collapsed and you were helping him? We were helping

:09:44. > :09:47.him, there was a little crowd of people. Some people were saying,

:09:48. > :09:54.maybe he thought there was a mosque, he saw the crowd. That's why he

:09:55. > :09:58.turned on the corner of it. I don't know how I managed to escape. Can I

:09:59. > :10:03.ask you one more question, we've heard various reports there were

:10:04. > :10:09.three people in the van? I could only see one person come out from

:10:10. > :10:14.the van. He was a big man. Very strong, big man, very strong. That's

:10:15. > :10:20.why there were other people trying to get him hold... When I tackled

:10:21. > :10:24.him, we put him on the ground until the police came and thank God, when

:10:25. > :10:33.the police came, there was still some emotion, with the guys over

:10:34. > :10:39.him, they were sad, there was a man trying to give CPR, he already was

:10:40. > :10:45.on the ground and the van, that just made it worse. Can I ask you this

:10:46. > :10:50.question, do you feel safe on the streets? I don't know, I'm not sure

:10:51. > :10:54.to be honest with you. If we all come together, we can be safe.

:10:55. > :11:00.Abdul, thank you very much for talking to us. Incredibly brave man.

:11:01. > :11:05.To reiterate, the police do now have this man in custody and once he is

:11:06. > :11:08.released from hospital, they said they will question him. The Home

:11:09. > :11:10.Secretary Amber Rudd is describing this as a terrorist attack. Back to

:11:11. > :11:23.you. What a horrible attack, Abdul

:11:24. > :11:28.talking there about how you he and a group of people tackled this man. He

:11:29. > :11:32.is now in custody, he is being treated in hospital, police will

:11:33. > :11:34.question him shortly. He wasn't alone, incredibly brave stories we

:11:35. > :11:40.are hearing from people who were there last night. Graham Satchel

:11:41. > :11:44.mentioned Amber Rudd, a short time ago she gave her reaction.

:11:45. > :11:49.Unfortunately we have again woken up to another terrible incident in

:11:50. > :11:53.London for a man has taken hold of a van and driven it into a group of

:11:54. > :11:58.innocent people instance we park. There is one fatality that we know

:11:59. > :12:04.about and a number of casualties, and the police are treating it as a

:12:05. > :12:08.terrorist incident. We know police -- we know police were on hand

:12:09. > :12:12.immediately and are treating it as a suspected terrorist event and that

:12:13. > :12:16.is a normal procedure, we will see whether they confirmed that later

:12:17. > :12:19.this morning. It was treated immediately as a suspected terrorist

:12:20. > :12:23.attack, we must allow the police to deal with the facts and they will

:12:24. > :12:26.make sure they make those facts available as soon as they can. Our

:12:27. > :12:31.priority must be to support the people who have even the victims of

:12:32. > :12:34.this and to make sure the investigation is done with all due

:12:35. > :12:39.speed and professionalism. We are concerned about everybody, you know,

:12:40. > :12:45.Londoners have been hit with a series of attacks and have been

:12:46. > :12:49.nothing short of heroic. We will always make sure that everybody is

:12:50. > :12:53.protected, we have a places of worship fund of which we announced

:12:54. > :12:57.last summer which is there to protect places of worship like

:12:58. > :13:01.mosques and we will make sure we do all we can to reduce these sort of

:13:02. > :13:06.attacks. The Prime Minister Wiltshire Cobra later today, we will

:13:07. > :13:08.allow police and the counterterrorism police involved to

:13:09. > :13:12.make sure the investigation continues and we will continue to

:13:13. > :13:16.keep people aware of what progress has been made. When we speak to

:13:17. > :13:21.emergency services during this series of attacks we always ask them

:13:22. > :13:24.for additional support they need. Actually they have generally

:13:25. > :13:27.confirmed to us, I spoke to a number of them over the weekend recently,

:13:28. > :13:32.that they do have sufficient resources because there's a of

:13:33. > :13:35.mutual aid of works, people supporting each other, that went to

:13:36. > :13:40.help people in Manchester, that helps people in London and its

:13:41. > :13:42.working but we will always keep it under review to ensure that

:13:43. > :13:47.emergency services have all the support they need so that they can

:13:48. > :13:50.support the communities affected. That was the Home Secretary Amber

:13:51. > :13:55.Rudd, we may interrupt whatever we are doing in the next few is, we

:13:56. > :13:56.expect a from New Scotland Yard, bear that in mind if you are

:13:57. > :14:14.watching us. Let's get the latest

:14:15. > :14:25.from our Political Correspondent, We are getting used to this,

:14:26. > :14:30.unfortunately, the government involved in a Cobra committing --

:14:31. > :14:34.committee meeting. The Prime Minister chairing that in the coming

:14:35. > :14:37.hours, she released a statement in the middle of the night saying there

:14:38. > :14:42.would be a Cobra committee meeting this morning, what tends to happen

:14:43. > :14:47.is that such meetings involve senior ministers at a government level,

:14:48. > :14:50.senior officials and civil servants, often the police and intelligence

:14:51. > :14:54.agencies are represented as well. We expect that to happen this morning.

:14:55. > :14:58.Some further reaction to bring you in the last couple of minutes from

:14:59. > :15:03.the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn but also crucially, the local MP in

:15:04. > :15:06.Finsbury Park, saying he was shocked by this horrific and cruel attack in

:15:07. > :15:11.Finsbury Park which is being treated as an act of terror. He offered his

:15:12. > :15:14.condolences to the family and friends of the man who died and

:15:15. > :15:18.those who have been injured, he says as the local MP is met with Muslim

:15:19. > :15:23.community leaders at the muslin well for house alongside the leader of

:15:24. > :15:27.this into an counsel Richard Watts, the council Chief Executive and the

:15:28. > :15:30.Metropolitan Police, he adds Mr Watts, the council leader and Mr

:15:31. > :15:35.Corbyn will attend prayers at things we Park mosque later today. We are

:15:36. > :15:40.watching pictures while we talk to you, in fact we are expecting a

:15:41. > :15:43.statement from New Scotland Yard from police there in the next few

:15:44. > :15:49.minutes. We have heard there are calls for extra police and the Mayor

:15:50. > :15:51.of London, city can say The Met had deployed extra police to reassure

:15:52. > :15:57.communities especially those observing Ramadan. Clearly the

:15:58. > :16:01.police are under a huge amount of pressure across the UK but

:16:02. > :16:06.articulate in London, with the recent terror attacks and the tower

:16:07. > :16:09.block fire last week. The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan provide an

:16:10. > :16:14.extensive statement on Facebook over night saying he had spoken to the

:16:15. > :16:18.Metropolitan Police as you would expect, extra police being deployed

:16:19. > :16:22.to reassure communities especially those observing Ramadan and you

:16:23. > :16:25.heard in that interview with the Home Secretary, questions about

:16:26. > :16:30.police resources, she says they tell her they have adequate money,

:16:31. > :16:34.adequate resources, adequate manpower to deal with the challenges

:16:35. > :16:38.they face at the moment because of this system of mutual aid, forces

:16:39. > :16:42.will lend people to other forces when a particular force in a

:16:43. > :16:45.particular area is facing a particular pressure. But you can

:16:46. > :16:48.imagine the extent to which that will become a pressing political

:16:49. > :16:52.issue in the next few weeks, you have seen a different Jeremy Corbyn

:16:53. > :17:00.is in his response to the tower block fire, resources to the urgency

:17:01. > :17:03.services, given the they are under, will lead to a rise... Chris Mason,

:17:04. > :17:08.thank you. We may speak to you later.

:17:09. > :17:17.We are awaiting a police statement from outside New Scotland Yard. We

:17:18. > :17:22.will return to the scene of that horrific incident which took place

:17:23. > :17:24.last night outside Finsbury Park. If you're just turning on your

:17:25. > :17:29.television for the first timement one person has died and eight people

:17:30. > :17:32.are being treated in three different hospitals after a 48-year-old man

:17:33. > :17:37.who is in police custody has driven a van into a group of Muslim

:17:38. > :17:42.worshippers who were outside a mosque around about the seven stars

:17:43. > :17:45.area in Finsbury Park. There is one mosque on one side of the road and

:17:46. > :17:49.another on the other side of the road and it was outside one of those

:17:50. > :17:52.that there was a group of worshippers who had broken their

:17:53. > :17:57.fast for Ramadan and who had come out from players and that van was

:17:58. > :18:02.driven into them, killing one and injuring eight.

:18:03. > :18:04.Let's speak to our Home Affairs Correspondent, Daniel Sanford

:18:05. > :18:06.who is in Finsbury Park for us this morning.

:18:07. > :18:12.There is a massive counter-terrorism operation now in place down there.

:18:13. > :18:18.There is. You can't really see because of the vans in the way, but

:18:19. > :18:21.on the road just behind us, there are forensic officers already

:18:22. > :18:26.starting their work trying to pick up any bits of evidence that have

:18:27. > :18:30.been left behind by this white van as it made its journey towards

:18:31. > :18:35.killing this man and injuring eight others. Just a little bit on the

:18:36. > :18:43.geography. It seems as if the incident took place on a street

:18:44. > :18:48.called Wadcoat Street. It's a dead end street, but it's an area where

:18:49. > :18:51.during Ramadan the people who spill out of both the mosques that you

:18:52. > :18:54.were talking about here tend to gather. It's a small dead end

:18:55. > :18:58.street. People set out portable chairs there and sit and eat

:18:59. > :19:04.together and chat together. There is a cafe nearby and what happened is

:19:05. > :19:08.that this white van made its way up in the bus lane, an area not

:19:09. > :19:13.normally used by normal traffic and then took a sharp left into this

:19:14. > :19:17.dead end street, ploughing into a group of people waiting between the

:19:18. > :19:22.first prayers of the night and the second prayers of the night and the

:19:23. > :19:29.man who was apparently driving that van was grabbed by people there. He

:19:30. > :19:33.was held in a headlock until police eventually arrived and according to

:19:34. > :19:38.some witnesses he was saying, "Kill me. Kill me my job is done." The

:19:39. > :19:41.police say they detained a 48-year-old man. Daniel Sandford,

:19:42. > :19:48.thank you. We were some of those incredible

:19:49. > :19:52.accounts, terrifying. One of those grabbed the man out of the white van

:19:53. > :20:00.and held him on the floor until the police arrived. Yes, with no

:20:01. > :20:05.thoughts for their own safety. It must have been horrible to have been

:20:06. > :20:08.involved in that and those eight people who have been injured are

:20:09. > :20:11.treated in four separate hospitals and the man who was arrested is

:20:12. > :20:14.being treated in hospital at the moment and police will be

:20:15. > :20:17.questioning him. We are expecting a police statement. We're not sure of

:20:18. > :20:22.the timings of the statement, but we've got our camera there. As soon

:20:23. > :20:26.as it happens we will bring it to you here on BBC Breakfast. We are

:20:27. > :20:30.trying to keep you up-to-date with other things including the weather

:20:31. > :20:33.and Carol can tell us how it has been.

:20:34. > :20:43.Good morning. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far.

:20:44. > :20:48.Today, it is likely to be hotter which is 33 Celsius.

:20:49. > :20:51.Now, for many of the UK, we are looking, many parts of the UK, it is

:20:52. > :20:54.going to be sunny. It is going to be hot, but there is an exception and

:20:55. > :20:58.that's across the far north of Scotland. Here we've got a weather

:20:59. > :21:02.front so temperatures will be lower, but across many parts of England and

:21:03. > :21:07.Wales, Southern Scotland, we're looking at highs in the high 20s, or

:21:08. > :21:11.indeed, for some, the low 30s. Pollen levels today are also very

:21:12. > :21:14.high more or less across-the-board, the exception being where we have a

:21:15. > :21:17.weather front and the weather front is producing some rain, but that

:21:18. > :21:22.rain will fizzle as we go through the day. But as the weather front

:21:23. > :21:26.sinks south, fresher conditions follow on from behind, but there

:21:27. > :21:30.will be a lot of sunshine. Strong sunshine, UV levels, are very high

:21:31. > :21:34.across many parts particularly the south today as well. So these are

:21:35. > :21:38.the kind of temperature values you can expect. Inland, we're looking up

:21:39. > :21:42.to 33 Celsius. Along the coast, it will be cooler with sea breezes

:21:43. > :21:46.developing. There is a chance we could see the odd shower develop too

:21:47. > :21:52.across eastern and central England. It could be thundery, but most of us

:21:53. > :21:55.will miss them. There is a higher risk across Southern Scotland and

:21:56. > :21:59.Northern Ireland, but here you will be unlucky if you catch one. The

:22:00. > :22:02.rain across the north does continued to fizzle leaving cloud in its wake.

:22:03. > :22:05.One or two showers for Northern Ireland, but most missing them. Most

:22:06. > :22:11.staying dry with highs into the high teens. Then we're back into

:22:12. > :22:17.temperatures in the 20s. We're going to interrupt you. The police

:22:18. > :22:20.statement Sadly, Londoners are waking up to the news of another

:22:21. > :22:25.dreadful incident in the capital that has left a number of people

:22:26. > :22:29.seriously injured. The attack unfolded whilst a man was already

:22:30. > :22:35.receiving first aid from public at the scene and sadly that man has

:22:36. > :22:39.died. Any causative link between his death and the attack will form part

:22:40. > :22:46.of our investigation. It is too early to state if his death was as a

:22:47. > :22:51.result of this attack. Our thoughts, are absolutely with all of those

:22:52. > :22:54.affected by the inside at Seven Sisters Road and their family,

:22:55. > :22:58.friends and the wider community. No matter what the motivation for this

:22:59. > :23:02.attack proves to be, we are keeping an open mind. This is being treated

:23:03. > :23:07.as a terrorist attack and the Counter Terrorism Command is

:23:08. > :23:11.investigating. This was an attack on London and all Londoners and we

:23:12. > :23:16.should all stand together against extremists whatever their cause.

:23:17. > :23:21.From 21 minutes past midnight this morning, police received a number of

:23:22. > :23:26.calls to Seven Sisters Road following a van having collided with

:23:27. > :23:31.pedestrians. Officers were in the vicinity at the time. Actually as

:23:32. > :23:35.the attack unfolded and they responded instantly. Additional

:23:36. > :23:41.officers were on scene within ten minutes. One man, as I've said, was

:23:42. > :23:46.pronounced dead add the scene. Eight others are in hospital and two more

:23:47. > :23:52.were treated at the scene. All the victims were from the Muslim

:23:53. > :23:54.community. I'd like to prays the police officers who immediately

:23:55. > :23:58.responded who gave life-saving treatment at the scene, but also

:23:59. > :24:04.very much those members of the public who assisted before and after

:24:05. > :24:07.this incident. Also at the scene detained by members of that

:24:08. > :24:12.community was the man suspected of being the driver during this attack.

:24:13. > :24:18.He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. I would like to

:24:19. > :24:23.thank those people who helped police in detaining the man and worked with

:24:24. > :24:25.officers to calmly and quickly get him into our custodiment their

:24:26. > :24:30.restraint in the circumstances is commendable. This investigation is

:24:31. > :24:36.ongoing and we are working fast to know the full details of how and why

:24:37. > :24:39.it took place. At this early stage of the investigation, no other

:24:40. > :24:43.suspects have been identified or reported to police. And there were

:24:44. > :24:49.no reports of any people having suffered any knife injuries. The van

:24:50. > :24:53.used has been examined by specialist officers, but nothing that would

:24:54. > :24:58.cause a risk to the public was found within it. Extra policing resources

:24:59. > :25:01.have been deployed across London in order to reassure communities

:25:02. > :25:08.especially those observing Ramadan at this very sensitive time. I would

:25:09. > :25:13.urge everyone to remain calm and remain vigilant. I ask the public

:25:14. > :25:22.with any information about this incident or anything, that causes

:25:23. > :25:27.them concern or suspicion to call the police on 0800789321.

:25:28. > :25:31.Obviously this is a very early stage of the investigation. However, as

:25:32. > :25:37.and when I can make more information available, I will. This has been an

:25:38. > :25:41.incredibly challenging tile for London and the emergency services

:25:42. > :25:45.are stretched. Nevertheless, we will all do absolutely everything we can

:25:46. > :25:50.with our partners to protect Londoners and our city. Now is a

:25:51. > :25:55.time once again for London to stand together to face those who seek to

:25:56. > :25:59.divide us. Thank you. I can take a couple of questions.

:26:00. > :26:03.REPORTER: Was this immediately considered a terrorist attack? Given

:26:04. > :26:06.the methodology and given what was occurring and what happened across

:26:07. > :26:09.the country, this had all the hallmarks of a terrorist incident.

:26:10. > :26:12.That's why the Counter Terrorism Command were called out to

:26:13. > :26:15.investigate. REPORTER: Can you give us more

:26:16. > :26:19.details on how the suspect was detained by members of the public?

:26:20. > :26:23.What actually happened? There has been a lot of images put out by the

:26:24. > :26:27.media as and when he was detained. It seems to me at the time he was

:26:28. > :26:31.quickly and calmly given over to the police and put into custody. I think

:26:32. > :26:35.as I've said I think that was commendable by members of the

:26:36. > :26:38.community who must have been incredibly shaken and incredibly

:26:39. > :26:42.scared and incredibly angry and I'd like to thank them and what it

:26:43. > :26:45.proves to me is Londoners will act together to protect themselves, but

:26:46. > :26:49.they will do so in a way that doesn't feed into terrorist and

:26:50. > :26:52.extremists hands. Can you give us anymore details about how serious

:26:53. > :26:57.the injuries are those to in hospital? No, it's too early to say

:26:58. > :27:01.and the hospital and NHS England will be updating later on the

:27:02. > :27:06.condition of the casualties. At least two are very serious. Again,

:27:07. > :27:13.our thoughts go out to the families and their friends who must be very

:27:14. > :27:18.shaken at this time. INAUDIBLE

:27:19. > :27:23.Have they been able to integrate him? That will be a priority of our

:27:24. > :27:28.investigation. As soon as he is in our custody and been through our

:27:29. > :27:34.formal custody procedures, he will be questioned as part of the

:27:35. > :27:43.investigation. . Eyewitnesses said they saw other people running away

:27:44. > :27:45.after the attack. INAUDIBLE

:27:46. > :27:50.Right, let me be very clear at this time. That was obviously a very key

:27:51. > :27:53.line of inquiry for us right at the start of this investigation. From

:27:54. > :27:57.what we are seeing and from witnesses are reporting to us, there

:27:58. > :28:02.was nobody else in the van and it appears at this time this attacker

:28:03. > :28:06.attacked alone. That's not to say that we are not investigating the

:28:07. > :28:09.full circumstances of how he came to be where he was and at this point in

:28:10. > :28:11.time there was nobody else in the van.

:28:12. > :28:15.Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen, thank you.

:28:16. > :28:19.That's a statement from the police. Just to give you a summary really.

:28:20. > :28:24.They are saying it's too early to say if the man who died was as a

:28:25. > :28:28.result of the attack. It is being treated as a terrorist attack and he

:28:29. > :28:35.went don't to say that it was an attack on London and all Londoners.

:28:36. > :28:38.Yes, he said, that was deputy Deputy Assistant Commissioner. He said

:28:39. > :28:42.interestingly that there were officers on the scene immediately

:28:43. > :28:45.giving emergency care as well. Others arrived on the scene within

:28:46. > :28:49.ten minutes. He confirmed that all victims were from the Muslim

:28:50. > :28:52.community, one died at the scene. Eight others are being treated in

:28:53. > :28:56.hospital and he did say as well, you might of caught that at the end that

:28:57. > :28:59.two of the eight are in what he called a very serious condition. He

:29:00. > :29:02.went out of his way, didn't he, to praise members of the public because

:29:03. > :29:07.we have been hearing from them all morning saying how they helped to

:29:08. > :29:11.detain this man and he particularly praised them for the bravery and

:29:12. > :29:17.also for the restraint under the circumstances which he said was

:29:18. > :29:19.commendable. And also saying it's an incredibly challenging time for

:29:20. > :29:25.London. We have been hearing this morning and speaking to number of

:29:26. > :29:27.people at the scene and to the Muslim Council of Britain saying how

:29:28. > :29:30.there is fear in the community and he says there will be extra

:29:31. > :29:33.resources across London being deployed particularly at this time

:29:34. > :29:37.when Muslims will be observing Ramadan. We will have more in the

:29:38. > :29:39.next few minutes. It is time to get the news, the travel

:29:40. > :32:58.next few minutes. It is time to get later. A high 32 Celsius.

:32:59. > :33:11.Hello, this is Breakfast with Louise Minchin and Dan Walker.

:33:12. > :33:17.One man has been killed and eight people have been taken to hospital,

:33:18. > :33:19.after a van drove into a crowd of pedestrians near

:33:20. > :33:27.In the last few minutes the Metropolitan police said the

:33:28. > :33:33.incident has all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. The Prime Minister

:33:34. > :33:34.will chair a meeting of the emergency Cobra committee later this

:33:35. > :33:36.morning. Breakfast's Graham Satchell

:33:37. > :33:45.is in Finsbury Park Hearing so many eyewitness accounts.

:33:46. > :33:52.So many people saw what happened, didn't they? Good morning. Yes,

:33:53. > :33:57.there is a whole crowd of people here. I'm going to talk to one

:33:58. > :34:05.person who was here overnight, Abdel-Rahman. Can you tell us what

:34:06. > :34:11.you saw? What I saw was a horrible attack on innocent people this

:34:12. > :34:16.morning. There was an old man laying down on the floor, I think you had a

:34:17. > :34:22.heart attack. This was before the attack happened? Yes, a man on the

:34:23. > :34:32.floor. Me and my friends were going to meet for a coffee after prayer.

:34:33. > :34:40.We went to help them, give him CPR. We circled him. Within minutes, this

:34:41. > :34:44.horrible man who was driving at speed, just turned on us and went

:34:45. > :34:53.over the people. He drove straight into you? He drove straight into us,

:34:54. > :34:58.yes. I managed to put my head up. I survived, thank God. Other people,

:34:59. > :35:03.my friends, got hurt. I was in hospital. I am praying they get

:35:04. > :35:15.better. My condolences to the old man, to his family. What happened

:35:16. > :35:23.next? There was an injection. We rented him. Before he can drive

:35:24. > :35:31.back, reverse. He came out and he tried to run. He came back my way. I

:35:32. > :35:39.took on to the floor. I held him on the ground. Me and other people as

:35:40. > :35:46.well. Until police came. You tackled him on the floor? Tackled him on the

:35:47. > :35:52.floor until the police came. What was he saying? He said he wanted to

:35:53. > :35:57.kill more people, he wanted to kill more Muslims. I asked him why he was

:35:58. > :36:03.doing this. I said, you're trying to kill innocent people, why? He wanted

:36:04. > :36:09.a kill more Muslims. He said, kill me. I asked him again, there are

:36:10. > :36:15.innocent people underneath the van. I was trying to hold on ground.

:36:16. > :36:21.There were other people running to pull the van. The Home Secretary has

:36:22. > :36:26.called this a terrorist attack. How would you describe it? Yes, I would

:36:27. > :36:31.describe it the same thing as they did. It was deliberately meant to

:36:32. > :36:37.attack innocent people. Whoever attacks innocent people, whether

:36:38. > :36:44.Muslim or non-Muslim, if you are going to harm innocent people, there

:36:45. > :36:51.is only a terror person who will do that. You are a very brave man. Well

:36:52. > :36:56.done. Thank you. Abdel-Rahman, who was part of the

:36:57. > :37:00.group who tackled this man. I wouldn't -- say undoubtedly helped

:37:01. > :37:04.to save lives. We do know that one man has died and a people are in

:37:05. > :37:08.hospital. The driver of the van is also in hospital. But he is in

:37:09. > :37:12.police custody. He will be questioned as soon as he is

:37:13. > :37:17.released. We will be back with grey men a few

:37:18. > :37:25.minutes. We have been hearing as well from the police. We heard from

:37:26. > :37:30.the deputy assistant commissioner. The attack on folded twice a man was

:37:31. > :37:36.already receiving first aid from the public at the scene. Sadly that man

:37:37. > :37:40.has died. Any causative link between his death and the attack will form

:37:41. > :37:46.part of our investigation. It is too early to say that his death was as a

:37:47. > :37:49.result of this attack. Our frauds are absolutely with all of those

:37:50. > :37:56.affected by the incident at seven sisters Rd. -- our thoughts. And the

:37:57. > :37:59.families, friends and wider community. No matter what the

:38:00. > :38:04.motivation for this attack proves to be, we are keeping an open mind.

:38:05. > :38:08.This is being treated as a terrorist attack. The Counter Terrorism

:38:09. > :38:11.Command is investigating. This was an attack on London and all

:38:12. > :38:17.Londoners. We should all stand together against extremists,

:38:18. > :38:19.whatever their cause. From 21 minutes past midnight this morning,

:38:20. > :38:26.police received a number of calls to seven Sisters Rd following a van

:38:27. > :38:31.having collided with pedestrians. Officers were in the immediate

:38:32. > :38:34.vicinity at the time, actually as the attack unfolded, and they

:38:35. > :38:40.responded instantly. Additional officers were on scene within ten

:38:41. > :38:46.minutes. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Eight others are in

:38:47. > :38:50.hospital. And two more were treated at the scene. All of the victims

:38:51. > :38:54.were from the Muslim community. I would like to praise the police

:38:55. > :38:58.officers who immediately responded, who gave life-saving treatment at

:38:59. > :39:04.the scene. But also, very much those members of the public who assisted

:39:05. > :39:08.before and after this incident. That was the latest statement from

:39:09. > :39:11.the police. They say the man they have arrested has been arrested on

:39:12. > :39:16.suspicion of attempted murder. We have heard these extraordinary

:39:17. > :39:20.accounts this morning at how they managed to tackle this man and help

:39:21. > :39:25.the police. The police very much saying, thank you for your support.

:39:26. > :39:28.They were talking about the commendable restraint in the

:39:29. > :39:33.circumstances. We will be speaking to the Muslim

:39:34. > :39:37.Council of Britain in a moment. Extra resources across London

:39:38. > :39:38.deployed for those who have been observing Ramadan. We want to talk

:39:39. > :39:57.about security issues. Police say nobody else was in the

:39:58. > :40:06.van. What can you tell us about what we do know? Welcome at the moment it

:40:07. > :40:11.is very limited. Whatever information that is coming through

:40:12. > :40:15.at the moment is fairly sketchy. It is from a variety of sources. I have

:40:16. > :40:19.spoken to some of the locals. Various conflicting reports. All I

:40:20. > :40:23.can draw from my analysis of the situation is this was well planned,

:40:24. > :40:28.this was intended to cause as much harm as possible. And therefore, I

:40:29. > :40:33.think it is very clear it is obviously a terrorist attack. But by

:40:34. > :40:38.whom? Ultimately the group or individual this person has been

:40:39. > :40:41.inspired by his plane directly into the Islamic State and extremist

:40:42. > :40:47.agenda, who have taken credit for many of these attacks we have seen

:40:48. > :40:54.of late. With your expertise, what makes you think it was well-planned

:40:55. > :40:57.particularly? It is particularly the time the

:40:58. > :41:01.actual attack has taken place. We are in the period of Ramadan.

:41:02. > :41:07.Inevitably those following Ramadan are fasting during daylight hours.

:41:08. > :41:12.It is after daylight hours they will be able to go to worship, eat and

:41:13. > :41:18.break their past. This was a perfect opportunity for that person with mal

:41:19. > :41:21.intent to have the largest congregation of locals in one

:41:22. > :41:26.vicinity, particularly outside this particular location. There were

:41:27. > :41:30.congregated in the street, therefore with a vehicle, as we have seen on

:41:31. > :41:34.many different attacks in the past, it is very easy for them to take as

:41:35. > :41:38.many casualties and fatalities as they can.

:41:39. > :41:46.We know this particular man is in police custody. What will their

:41:47. > :41:49.priorities be, the police? Well, the really important thing is that he

:41:50. > :41:54.has been taken alive. That is fantastically useful for the

:41:55. > :41:59.authorities in their subsequent interviews of him. He is apparently

:42:00. > :42:04.being medically treated. That is standard. For many reasons that has

:42:05. > :42:06.to be done to ensure he is robust enough to be able to be interviewed

:42:07. > :42:11.as quickly as possible, to try and determine if there are are any

:42:12. > :42:15.others who can be connected to him, could be part of a larger cell

:42:16. > :42:21.group. And get as much valuable intelligence as possible. It will be

:42:22. > :42:26.not just the standard passes as we hear so much about the wake of

:42:27. > :42:29.terrorist events, where it is looking at non-associates, cellular

:42:30. > :42:34.footprint, digital footprint, no doubt going to his residence and

:42:35. > :42:40.those nearing to determine what they can, but having the suspect actually

:42:41. > :42:43.alive is very valuable. Extra police forces have been deployed across

:42:44. > :42:48.London but how can you protect members of the public from this kind

:42:49. > :42:53.of attack? This is the massive challenge right now. And again, this

:42:54. > :42:56.is something which will require a lot of deep thinking. There are

:42:57. > :43:05.certain security measures that have been developed over time to protect

:43:06. > :43:08.against hostile vehicles. They include ramps blockades. All kinds

:43:09. > :43:14.of street furniture that can be deployed. But ultimately, this also

:43:15. > :43:17.has to consider potentially be re-architecture and read planning of

:43:18. > :43:22.certain areas, particularly where there could be a large pedestrian

:43:23. > :43:27.footfall. There are thousands if not millions of cars on the road every

:43:28. > :43:32.day in the United Kingdom. We need to address this pragmatically. Be

:43:33. > :43:35.careful not to be knee jerk in our reaction. Thankfully, at this stage,

:43:36. > :43:40.the attacks of terrorist euthanising vehicles, causing harm to the

:43:41. > :43:45.general public, are still much lower than those created by cars in an

:43:46. > :43:48.everyday sense. That is not to say this wasn't an horrific attack and

:43:49. > :43:52.there shouldn't be measures put in place. But it has to be thought

:43:53. > :43:58.through very carefully. Will Geddis, thank you very indeed.

:43:59. > :44:03.Let's get some more reaction to the main story now. Joining us from our

:44:04. > :44:10.London newsroom is the assistant secretary of the Muslim Council of

:44:11. > :44:13.Britain. Thank you for your time. I appreciate you holding on. Listening

:44:14. > :44:18.to the Metropolitan police and our security effort -- expert. Can I ask

:44:19. > :44:24.you for your reaction to this awful news? I think we are all shocked at

:44:25. > :44:28.what has happened. This has affected Muslim communities near that mask,

:44:29. > :44:36.Muslim Welfare House across the country. This is something that is

:44:37. > :44:40.shocking. The fact that it might happen at other gatherings across

:44:41. > :44:44.the country. Muslims are gathering every single evening to break their

:44:45. > :44:47.fast and for the night prior that happened in this situation. That

:44:48. > :44:53.will be continuing every day. People have already raised serious concerns

:44:54. > :44:58.over their safety and the fear this might happen again. That is why we

:44:59. > :45:02.welcome very much what the Metropolitan police and a Sadiq can

:45:03. > :45:08.have said, that there will be extra policing to reassure people. That is

:45:09. > :45:12.what we need right now. We have been hearing from several eyewitnesses

:45:13. > :45:16.and people from your organisation as well, talking about the fact that

:45:17. > :45:22.Muslims field deliberately targeted. There is genuine fear? Very much so.

:45:23. > :45:26.Many Muslim communities for a long time have felt the rise in hate

:45:27. > :45:31.crime against Muslims is a reality that has been under reported,

:45:32. > :45:36.misunderstood and not dealt with in the same way against -- as bigotry

:45:37. > :45:39.against other communities. This is a transformative moment where

:45:40. > :45:44.hopefully this will mean that action will be taken to tackle hate crime,

:45:45. > :45:48.and that the rise in hate crime against Muslims taking place in

:45:49. > :45:54.recent years that has reached a worrying situation yesterday.

:45:55. > :46:01.What can be done to stop something like this? We are hearing from the

:46:02. > :46:04.Met police there will be extra resources across London,

:46:05. > :46:09.particularly during Ramadan but what will make a difference? We have to

:46:10. > :46:13.be careful about any knee jerk reaction. It is good there will be

:46:14. > :46:17.extra police to reassure people. I think there needs to be a range of

:46:18. > :46:21.things looked at, starting from the way that many of these individuals,

:46:22. > :46:34.far right individuals are spreading hate and he is seen as acceptable in

:46:35. > :46:36.many parts of society. Baroness Seder while they talked about how

:46:37. > :46:39.Islamophobia has passed the dinner table test. People seem to be able

:46:40. > :46:43.to talk about hatred of Muslims without people calling it out that

:46:44. > :46:50.is unacceptable and needs to stop. We have a situation now where people

:46:51. > :46:54.think Islam is a threat to Western civilisation. These far right

:46:55. > :46:59.extremists peddle their hatred and in some sections of the far right

:47:00. > :47:04.and in the media they create this atmosphere of hostility which is

:47:05. > :47:07.very dangerous and needs to be tackled right now. We have heard

:47:08. > :47:13.from many others mentioning that incidents like this play into the

:47:14. > :47:17.hands of the likes of Islamic State. That is very true. There are people

:47:18. > :47:21.out there, whether it is the far right or people who claim to be

:47:22. > :47:25.Muslims committing acts of terror, who want to divide us and create

:47:26. > :47:29.hatred. This was not just an attack on Muslims, this was an attack on

:47:30. > :47:33.our society. We care about tolerance. As British people we care

:47:34. > :47:47.about tolerance and respect for others. We can see this by the way

:47:48. > :47:51.our Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, the Mayor of London and

:47:52. > :47:53.police have reacted in a swift, powerful way. This is a terror

:47:54. > :47:56.attack which will not be tolerated. We hope the precursors of this will

:47:57. > :47:59.be looked at good to talk to, thank you. The words of the Muslim Council

:48:00. > :48:01.of Britain were echoed by the Assistant Commissioner of the Met

:48:02. > :48:06.police sent this was an attack on all of Britain and all of London.

:48:07. > :48:11.We will keep you up-to-date on but shortly. Carol has a look at this

:48:12. > :48:28.morning's weather for us. Good morning. It is already a hot

:48:29. > :48:33.start to the day. It is much cooler in Inverness where we have a weather

:48:34. > :48:36.front and also some rain. The other thing about today's bee pollen

:48:37. > :48:40.levels will be very high almost across the board except for where we

:48:41. > :48:45.have that weather front. The UV levels are about as high as they get

:48:46. > :48:50.in the UK. Do bear that in mind. Here is the weather front producing

:48:51. > :48:57.rain across the north-west of the UK. The rain will fizzle as we go

:48:58. > :49:05.through the day. For the rest of us it will be a dry and hot one. Inland

:49:06. > :49:11.it will be hopped along the shoreline there will be seen

:49:12. > :49:15.breezes. -- inland, it will be hopped, along the shoreline there

:49:16. > :49:24.will be seen breezes. It will be warmer than Miami. There is the risk

:49:25. > :49:26.of afternoon showers across northern England, southern Scotland and

:49:27. > :49:32.Northern Ireland. These could prove to be thundery but we will not all

:49:33. > :49:36.see them. The rain fades across the far north of Scotland. There will be

:49:37. > :49:40.more cloud cover in Northern Ireland as our weather front sinks south.

:49:41. > :49:45.Then we're back into the hot sunshine across Wales. As we head on

:49:46. > :49:50.through the evening and overnight, many of the thundery showers will

:49:51. > :49:54.tend to fade. There will be a lot of dry weather around. There will be

:49:55. > :50:01.more cloud coming in across eastern parts of England. It will be another

:50:02. > :50:13.sultry night as well. Pressure conditions across the northern half

:50:14. > :50:14.of the UK. -- fresher conditions. Tomorrow there will be a good 10

:50:15. > :50:31.degrees drop. It will store the hot across many

:50:32. > :50:37.areas. Through the latter part of the day we are likely to see some

:50:38. > :50:40.heat showers sparked off, across South Wales and south-west England.

:50:41. > :50:44.Those could be sharp. As we head into Wednesday, rain in the north

:50:45. > :50:51.but the heat starts to pump up again from the south.

:50:52. > :50:59.Thank you, Carol. We are live on the BBC News Channel as well. This is in

:51:00. > :51:02.response to what happened in Finsbury Park overnight. We have

:51:03. > :51:06.heard that no one else was in the van when it attacked. One man alone

:51:07. > :51:13.has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after this attack

:51:14. > :51:20.on worshippers at Finsbury Park to staff the -- just after midnight. We

:51:21. > :51:24.are hearing from the Metropolitan Police the two people are in very

:51:25. > :51:28.serious condition. We also hear police were on the scene immediately

:51:29. > :51:35.and further police arrived ten minutes later as well. As yet, we

:51:36. > :51:40.know this man is in hospital himself, the 48-year-old who has

:51:41. > :51:44.been arrested, and he will be questioned by police as well who are

:51:45. > :51:46.looking at this as a major terrorist incident and counterterrorism

:51:47. > :51:51.officers are on the street at the moment. There is a large police

:51:52. > :51:59.operation still ongoing this morning.

:52:00. > :52:03.Also today, Brexit negotiations begin in Brussels. Steph is at a

:52:04. > :52:08.wholesale market in Manchester to see how businesses feel about the

:52:09. > :52:12.whole process. Good morning. Lots of people I have

:52:13. > :52:18.talked to have talked about the uncertainty. That is a big thing for

:52:19. > :52:22.them. This is a business which trades on how consumer spending is

:52:23. > :52:27.going. This is a wholesale market so lots of people coming to buy stuff

:52:28. > :52:29.for local restaurants and shops. They are bothered about whether

:52:30. > :52:33.people will be spending in the shops and what does it mean for the prices

:52:34. > :52:37.of the things because we have seen with the currency markets, and the

:52:38. > :52:49.pound falling, that has put pressure on prices for some of the products

:52:50. > :52:51.they sell. What do all these negotiations mean? What will the

:52:52. > :52:55.next two years look like? We have a chief economist at KPMG. Just

:52:56. > :53:01.explain the process now. There will be essentially three stages. The

:53:02. > :53:06.first one is the exit negotiations, ie the divorce. Then it is a

:53:07. > :53:10.relationship in the future, the long term relationship between the UK and

:53:11. > :53:13.EU. And quite possibly a transitional arrangement to take us

:53:14. > :53:18.from one state to the other. If you're looking at the divorce

:53:19. > :53:31.element of this, what does it look like? And there will be quite a few

:53:32. > :53:34.things which need to be negotiated. There will be a citizens rights

:53:35. > :53:37.issue, the rights of UK nationals in the EU and EU nationals in the UK.

:53:38. > :53:39.There will be a financial settlement which will cost the UK about ?48

:53:40. > :53:45.billion, there will be legal issues like property rights and there will

:53:46. > :53:50.be border issues into ticket, the border between Northern Ireland and

:53:51. > :53:53.the Republic of Ireland. -- in particular the border between

:53:54. > :53:58.Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. And there will be security

:53:59. > :54:04.issues which need to be coordinated. I spoke to women who said there are

:54:05. > :54:09.so mini elements to this, there are all the little things that need to

:54:10. > :54:16.be thought of that. Absolutely, when you look at the future, there will

:54:17. > :54:20.be the relationship in terms of the entry to the single market in terms

:54:21. > :54:24.of goods and services which will need to be negotiated sector by

:54:25. > :54:31.sector, and even product by-product. Then there is the future

:54:32. > :54:39.contribution to the EU. There will be regulation by regulation, and we

:54:40. > :54:43.are unlikely to get an off-the-shelf agreement. And in the meantime

:54:44. > :54:50.businesses like these ones have to carry on. Is it a worry all of this?

:54:51. > :54:54.That represents quite a lot of uncertainty for businesses and

:54:55. > :54:57.households. We have already seen the UK economy slowing quite

:54:58. > :55:03.significantly in the first quarter of this year, said the worry is this

:55:04. > :55:08.increased uncertainty will put more downward pressure on growth in the

:55:09. > :55:14.short to medium term. Thank you for your time. I will get out of the way

:55:15. > :55:16.because I am in the way here! It is certainly very busy. That is it from

:55:17. > :55:24.me. Thank you. Let's return to our main

:55:25. > :55:28.story and an attack close to a mosque in the Finsbury Park area of

:55:29. > :55:32.London this morning. We know one man has died, eight people are being

:55:33. > :55:36.treated in hospital and two of those have very serious injuries. In the

:55:37. > :55:40.last half an hour we have heard from the Met police describing the

:55:41. > :55:46.incident as having all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack. The Prime

:55:47. > :55:48.Minister says she will chair an emergency Cobra meeting this

:55:49. > :55:55.morning. We know all the victims were from the Muslim community. This

:55:56. > :56:02.man describes the moment the van struck the pedestrians. It turned

:56:03. > :56:07.left with no indication, suddenly, deliberately and struck the people.

:56:08. > :56:12.One of them was under the van. We were gathered around the van to lift

:56:13. > :56:22.the van up to get the guy out from underneath. Two literally ran. As

:56:23. > :56:25.soon as this happened there was shouting and the people were

:56:26. > :56:35.gathered around. Two RAM, one got arrested. He was shouting, I want to

:56:36. > :56:43.kill all Muslims, literally, he said that, word by word, he said it like

:56:44. > :56:49.this. And then I'm sure, guys, this is a terrorist attack, whether he is

:56:50. > :56:57.as limb or a Christian. This is a terrorist attack. Tomorrow, I don't

:56:58. > :57:00.want to see it saying he has mental issues, this is not acceptable.

:57:01. > :57:04.Otherwise all terrorists have mental issues. He is categorised as a

:57:05. > :57:09.terrorist, whether he is a Christian or a Muslim, there is no religion

:57:10. > :57:13.which belongs to terrorism. Terrorism has no limits. All of them

:57:14. > :57:20.are terrorists who hurt or harm or kill people. This is terrorism. We

:57:21. > :57:23.can speak to the chief executive of the Ramadan foundation. The

:57:24. > :57:26.Metropolitan Police are saying it is being treated as a terrorist

:57:27. > :57:35.incident and all indications are it seems to have been a deliberate

:57:36. > :57:37.attack. What is your response? Think what people in the community were

:57:38. > :57:42.concerned about, when these reports come in, they have to be clear they

:57:43. > :57:47.have of events to guide them, as events have unfolded it is clear it

:57:48. > :57:54.was a deliberate attack targeting Muslims who were leaving prayers.

:57:55. > :57:57.The main mosque Finsbury Park mosque had not finished their prayers when

:57:58. > :58:03.he started driving towards them. When he saw another mosque five

:58:04. > :58:07.minutes away, he decided to head into that direction. That is the

:58:08. > :58:15.Muslim welfare centre on Seven Sisters Road. We have been hearing a

:58:16. > :58:21.lot of reaction this morning from the Muslim community, we heard from

:58:22. > :58:26.the Muslim Council of Britain saying the Muslim community would have seen

:58:27. > :58:29.this coming. They think there is a fear because of heightened tensions

:58:30. > :58:37.in recent weeks, that something like this was in the pipeline? Yes,

:58:38. > :58:42.Baroness Warsi did a test on Islamophobia. It does exist. There

:58:43. > :58:45.is rampant Islamophobia. We have to change the language of division and

:58:46. > :58:50.replace it with the language of hope. Terrorism is evil, human life

:58:51. > :58:54.is sacred. The government should be commended. They are taking it very

:58:55. > :58:58.seriously. The Prime Minister is chairing a Cobra meeting as we speak

:58:59. > :59:03.and will hopefully speak to the nation shortly. Right now we will

:59:04. > :59:07.say goodbye to viewers on the BBC News Channel. Thank you for watching

:59:08. > :59:11.us. Joanna Gosling will have continuing coverage on the BBC News

:59:12. > :59:17.Channel and BBC Two in just a moment.

:59:18. > :59:25.We will continue that conversation on BBC One. I know so many people

:59:26. > :59:29.will still be watching. It was very interesting hearing from the police

:59:30. > :59:33.commander. He was thanking the community. We understand

:59:34. > :59:36.eyewitnesses piled in and detained this man. Also saying their

:59:37. > :59:43.restraint was commendable under the circumstances? I want to commend the

:59:44. > :59:50.imam of the Muslim welfare centre. He kept people calm as the incident

:59:51. > :59:54.happened. People are hurting. They are concerned. They want reassurance

:59:55. > :59:58.from their government. From all of the stuff I have seen already they

:59:59. > :00:02.are getting that reassurance. The police and government are taking it

:00:03. > :00:08.seriously. There will be extra resources deployed across London,

:00:09. > :00:12.particularly during Ramadan. Will allay some fears about security

:00:13. > :00:17.issues? Yes, as Muslims we have to go to mosque to pray. A lot of

:00:18. > :00:23.people will be toing and froing from the mosque. To get that safety and

:00:24. > :00:27.security in London and across the country is very important. I urge

:00:28. > :00:32.people to remain calm. Don't be divided by these maniacs who want to

:00:33. > :00:38.cause division. We have talked about how many people say they feel

:00:39. > :00:44.afraid. Is that something you have seen echoed? Yes, if I was to show

:00:45. > :00:48.you my timeline, it is full of hatred for people who work

:00:49. > :00:52.perpetuating this division, who somehow find an excuse for this

:00:53. > :00:57.violence, in some cases celebrating it. It is just sick. There is a

:00:58. > :01:03.father who has been killed. There are many people injured. Let's focus

:01:04. > :01:09.on the individuals involved, support the mass families. I'm sure the

:01:10. > :01:13.community will do that. How do we change that? How does that stop? I

:01:14. > :01:22.was talking on another channel and I said how we have two change the

:01:23. > :01:26.language. Give us some examples? For example, Katie Hopkins, some of the

:01:27. > :01:32.stuff she put in the Daily Mail. Piers Morgan, in the Daily Mail

:01:33. > :01:36.again. Let's reflect on that. I'm not saying my community is beyond

:01:37. > :01:41.criticism but do so in a responsible, respectful way. What is

:01:42. > :01:45.key from a police point of view, they have been absolutely clear,

:01:46. > :01:52.this is an attack on London and all Londoners. Absolutely. Again, I just

:01:53. > :01:57.caution, as I was talking to Muslims at about two o'clock this morning on

:01:58. > :02:01.the scene, just calm down. Let the police get the full facts. We have

:02:02. > :02:05.seen it now with the evidence they are putting forward in saying it is

:02:06. > :02:08.a terrorist attack. The government is taking it seriously. Give them

:02:09. > :02:15.the space to investigate. If there are other people involved I'm

:02:16. > :02:20.certain they will find them. It is impossible to remain calm when

:02:21. > :02:22.people are dying, are being murdered, and some people are doing

:02:23. > :02:28.that in the name of religion, whether right or wrong. Yes, and

:02:29. > :02:32.there are people doing it in the t:i.d. Is your far right extremism.

:02:33. > :02:36.People have been at the forefront of dealing with the threat from the

:02:37. > :02:40.Muslim community. They want to see the same reaction against the far

:02:41. > :02:44.Right narrative. They have got something in common. They want a

:02:45. > :02:50.clash of civilisations, they want division. We must not let them

:02:51. > :02:53.succeed. Tell us about people tonight is going for prayers. Will

:02:54. > :02:58.they really -- feel reassured by what they have heard today? Yes, I

:02:59. > :03:02.think a lot of people are waiting to see what the Prime Minister says

:03:03. > :03:05.Arthur the Cobra meeting. We heard from the Home Secretary. People are

:03:06. > :03:09.looking to the Prime Minister for some leadership. We have had a

:03:10. > :03:14.ding-dong of the political stuff in recent weeks but she is our Prime

:03:15. > :03:19.Minister. It requires strong leadership and I hope she provided.

:03:20. > :03:23.You confident of the leadership does, crop, there will be a course

:03:24. > :03:27.that will get us away from this? Absolutely. If we can get the safety

:03:28. > :03:31.element involved and the right language evolved, and bring people

:03:32. > :03:35.together, I think we are on the road to dealing with this evil.

:03:36. > :03:39.Thank you. We have heard from the police in the last half an hour.

:03:40. > :03:47.This is being treated as a terrorist attack. Officers were there as the

:03:48. > :03:49.attack unfolded. All victims were from the Muslim community. And

:03:50. > :03:55.really praise for those people who managed to detain this man who was

:03:56. > :04:00.in this van and then helped the police actually detain him as well.

:04:01. > :04:04.They were being praised for their restraint, which we are told was

:04:05. > :04:08.commendable under the circumstances. That 48-year-old was taken into

:04:09. > :04:11.police custody. He is in hospital and will be questioned by

:04:12. > :04:16.counter-terrorism police as well. We know that one man has died and

:04:17. > :04:20.another a towering hospital. Two of those eight hour in a serious

:04:21. > :05:54.condition. In a moment we will be back. Now it is the

:05:55. > :06:07.I'll be back with the lunchtime news at 1.30 on BBC One.

:06:08. > :06:14.Welcome back to BBC Breakfast. We are talking this morning about the

:06:15. > :06:17.main news, and horrific incident which has taken place overnight in

:06:18. > :06:21.London outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. One man has died and eight

:06:22. > :06:26.people are being treated in hospital. Two in serious condition.

:06:27. > :06:31.One man has been taken into custody. A 48-year-old. He will be questioned

:06:32. > :06:36.by counter-terrorism police after apparently driving a white van into

:06:37. > :06:40.a crowd of people gathered outside a mosque in Finsbury Park. We have

:06:41. > :06:45.heard extraordinary stories of bravery as those affected by these

:06:46. > :06:53.-- this incident, some of them managed to detain the man, helped

:06:54. > :06:56.with the police. We know that members of the public helped to

:06:57. > :07:01.detain him and helped police to get this man into a van. He has been

:07:02. > :07:06.taken to hospital, where he is being treated. He will be questioned. He

:07:07. > :07:10.has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. This incident is

:07:11. > :07:15.being treated as a terrorist attack. There will be full coverage of this

:07:16. > :07:19.throughout the day on BBC News and the BBC News channel as well. We

:07:20. > :07:25.have changed our programme run very much today. But it is now time for

:07:26. > :07:28.something completely different. Yes, exactly. Completely different.

:07:29. > :07:31.They're curious and adaptable, but also one of the most elusive

:07:32. > :07:34.Now, a new BBC Two documentary, has captured the mischievous

:07:35. > :07:37.and wild encounters of otters - both on land and below the water.

:07:38. > :07:39.The wildlife cameraman, Mark Wheeler, has devoted

:07:40. > :07:41.a quarter of a century to following the animals.

:07:42. > :07:49.But first let's take a look at his subjects in action.

:07:50. > :07:58.Rarely seen, they have a near mythical reputation. They have

:07:59. > :08:14.boundless energy. And they are able to dive deep. And couched -- catch

:08:15. > :08:21.the fastest of prey. Otters. My name is Charlie Hamilton James, wildlife

:08:22. > :08:25.cameraman and other fanatic. I have been observing and filming these shy

:08:26. > :08:33.but relentless animals for the last 25 years. For me, otters are the

:08:34. > :08:42.ultimate predator. Perfectly bridging the gap between two worlds.

:08:43. > :08:47.One dry, one wet. What a wonderful alternative to see

:08:48. > :08:53.that this morning in some ways. Mark Wheeler is here. It is extraordinary

:08:54. > :09:00.getting up close and personal. There is not a lot of footage of them

:09:01. > :09:03.before this? No. They are very elusive, especially the Eurasian

:09:04. > :09:10.otter that we are used to. We grew up with otters being these elusive

:09:11. > :09:14.creatures. This is an opportunity to film otters like never before,

:09:15. > :09:20.basically. And try and get Charlie Hamilton James on a journey to dig

:09:21. > :09:26.deeper into otter biology. Why are they so allusive? Well,

:09:27. > :09:30.traditionally they have been hunted and persecuted throughout their

:09:31. > :09:37.rain. There became very shy and allusive. They are nocturnal. They

:09:38. > :09:43.don't, ride during the day. They are only recovering from that. Pollution

:09:44. > :09:47.and persecution. What you have discovered is that they seem to be

:09:48. > :09:52.super animals. Tell us a bit about them? They have these incredibly

:09:53. > :09:59.sets of adaptations. Behavioural and physiological. They can live in this

:10:00. > :10:01.amazing hinterland between being a land-based predators that can catch

:10:02. > :10:08.things online and a water-based predator. In this programme you get

:10:09. > :10:16.up close and personal with these orphaned otters. It is a trio, is

:10:17. > :10:19.that right? Yes, two brothers and a single male. They came to a rescue

:10:20. > :10:27.centre in Wisconsin in North America. We found them just by

:10:28. > :10:32.looking around rescue centres. They really help us tell the story of why

:10:33. > :10:38.otters are amazing. We follow them from being these tiny little

:10:39. > :10:43.bottle-fed bundles back to their release into the wild. What

:10:44. > :10:46.surprised me is that they have these amazing pelts, it makes them

:10:47. > :10:51.waterproof as adults but they are not when they are first-born? No,

:10:52. > :10:56.they are not able to swim and they are not waterproof. They have these

:10:57. > :11:02.two enormous moments early in life where they learn to swim and they

:11:03. > :11:08.learn that water is not something to be afraid of. They finally get their

:11:09. > :11:12.waterproof coating on therefore without getting too cold and without

:11:13. > :11:15.getting hypothermia. We are going to have a look at some

:11:16. > :11:22.orphaned pups enjoying one of their first swimming lessons.

:11:23. > :11:32.Let's see if we can see that. Baby otters don't really like water. So

:11:33. > :11:42.Mark needs to teach them their most important life lessons. That water

:11:43. > :11:48.isn't something to be afraid of. Just like their mother would in the

:11:49. > :11:54.wild, Mark makes soothing calls to reassure them.

:11:55. > :12:01.He is sort of speaking otter cam isn't he?! He is. Out of context it

:12:02. > :12:06.makes -- Centre restraints. He is putting them into water. They are

:12:07. > :12:10.scared but he is reassuring them by making these little noises. It is a

:12:11. > :12:12.fascinating programme. I wish you all the best with it.

:12:13. > :12:18.Supercharged Otters is on BBC Two, Tomorrow at 8pm.

:12:19. > :12:23.Just before we go this morning, a quick reminder of what we have

:12:24. > :12:28.learned this morning about this attack last night. We know that a

:12:29. > :12:33.van was driven into a group of worshippers near Finsbury Park at

:12:34. > :12:38.about 20 past midnight last night. One man was killed in that attack.

:12:39. > :12:42.Eight others -- aid others injured. We know that a man has been

:12:43. > :12:46.detained, he has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. A

:12:47. > :12:51.48-year-old man who has had to be treated in hospital.

:12:52. > :12:53.The Metropolitan Police say this was an attack on London and all

:12:54. > :12:59.Londoners. All of the victims are from the Muslim community. And two

:13:00. > :13:03.of those in hospital are in a very serious condition. Police responded

:13:04. > :13:06.immediately. There are other police on the scene within ten minutes.

:13:07. > :13:11.This being treated as a major terror incidents. Police say nobody else

:13:12. > :13:14.was in the van at the time and as far as they understand that this

:13:15. > :13:19.time the man attacked alone. There has been huge praise for those

:13:20. > :13:22.members of the public who assisted in detaining this man and helping

:13:23. > :13:26.the police as well. They have called their restraint commendable under

:13:27. > :13:30.the circumstances. Continued coverage on BBC News.

:13:31. > :13:31.Theresa May will chair Cobra later. We are back tomorrow from six.

:13:32. > :13:37.Bye-bye.
