:00:09. > :00:11.Spanish police say they have shot dead five suspected terrorists,

:00:12. > :00:14.thought to be linked to the van attack in Barcelona which killed

:00:15. > :00:27.The suspects, who were wearing explosive belts,

:00:28. > :00:30.were killed in the seaside resort of Cambrils overnight.

:00:31. > :00:33.Police are still searching for the driver who carried out

:00:34. > :00:55.Three days of mourning have been declared.

:00:56. > :00:59.We'll be live in Spain for the latest shortly.

:01:00. > :01:01.Our other headlines this morning: The Defence Secretary,

:01:02. > :01:04.Sir Michael Fallon, has personally apologised to the mother

:01:05. > :01:06.of a soldier killed in a Snatch Land Rover

:01:07. > :01:14.A call to cut calories in pizzas, burgers and ready meals

:01:15. > :01:18.as the government tries to tackle child obesity in England.

:01:19. > :01:21.In Sport, England shine under the Test match lights.

:01:22. > :01:23.Centuries for Joe Root and Alastair Cook put England

:01:24. > :01:27.in control of the first day-night Test against West Indies.

:01:28. > :01:41.Good morning. I am alongside 12 yachts which will start a 40,000

:01:42. > :01:48.miles round the world trip and race on Sunday. It is run by amateurs. I

:01:49. > :01:52.have the weather details and more on that. The day contained sunshine,

:01:53. > :01:54.showers and a fairly blustery wind. See you in 15 minutes.

:01:55. > :01:57.Our main is those events in Spain where overnight five suspected

:01:58. > :02:01.terrorists were shot dead by police in the costal town of Cambrils.

:02:02. > :02:03.Police say the men, who were wearing explosive belts,

:02:04. > :02:06.are linked to the attack in Barcelona yesterday afternoon 13

:02:07. > :02:10.people were killed there when a van was driven into crowds in a popular

:02:11. > :02:16.It's believed 15 of those are in a critical condition.

:02:17. > :02:18.So far, two people have been arrested in connection

:02:19. > :02:21.with the attack in Barcelona, but police say they're

:02:22. > :02:23.still searching for the driver of the van.

:02:24. > :02:35.The latest on the situation now from our reporter Sarah Corker.

:02:36. > :02:38.In the early hours of Friday morning, a dramatic shootout

:02:39. > :02:44.in a holiday resort of Cambrils, 120km south of Barcelona.

:02:45. > :02:46.The authorities say five suspected terrorists wearing what appeared

:02:47. > :02:57.to be suicide belts were shot dead by police.

:02:58. > :02:58.Police opened fire after the attackers drove

:02:59. > :03:08.The next thing, police arrived there, really quick.

:03:09. > :03:11.Then they started shouting at the guy and the next thing,

:03:12. > :03:28.The incident has been linked to the deadly than attacking the heart of

:03:29. > :03:29.Barcelona just hours earlier. Hundreds of holidaymakers, locals,

:03:30. > :03:32.shoppers ran for their lives. This white van ploughed

:03:33. > :03:35.into pedestrians on Spain's I saw a white van with

:03:36. > :03:43.the side door open. Whether it was on police or the van,

:03:44. > :03:48.I don't know, we didn't hang We ran into the Burger

:03:49. > :04:03.King to not get shot. Police released this photo of

:04:04. > :04:09.Dreessen Kabir whose documents were used to hide the van but latest

:04:10. > :04:14.reports suggest he told police he is passport was stolen -- Driss

:04:15. > :04:21.Oukabir. The so-called Islamic State group said it was behind the attack.

:04:22. > :04:25.TRANSLATION: I want to express the solidarity of the whole of Spain

:04:26. > :04:29.with Barcelona, today hit by jihadist terrorism. Like other

:04:30. > :04:34.cities around the world before it. The authorities are now linking the

:04:35. > :04:40.attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils with an explosion on Wednesday in

:04:41. > :04:44.the town of Alcanar - where one person died. Police police suspect

:04:45. > :04:48.that the house were preparing explosives. And as people anxiously

:04:49. > :04:50.wait for news of loved ones, the authorities have learnt Dell might

:04:51. > :04:59.want the number of dead may rise. Barcelona is just the latest

:05:00. > :05:01.European city to witness the terrible effects of a vehicle

:05:02. > :05:03.attack on pedestrians. The problem for the authorities

:05:04. > :05:07.is that such attacks are extremely Our security correspondent

:05:08. > :05:09.Gordon Corera has been looking at what more, if

:05:10. > :05:17.anything, can be done. Barcelona is just the latest in a

:05:18. > :05:20.series of vehicle attacks, leaving a terrible but tragically now almost

:05:21. > :05:22.familiar scene on the streets of Europe.

:05:23. > :05:29.The first major incident was in Nice when a lorry ploughed into a crowd

:05:30. > :05:34.celebrating bastille Day just over a year ago. It was a target and moment

:05:35. > :05:38.to maximise the casualties and the impact. Then there was a lorry

:05:39. > :05:41.attack on a Christmas market in Berlin, and a van driven into the

:05:42. > :05:45.city centre of Stockholm. And Britain has not been immune from

:05:46. > :05:50.what's been dubbed low-tech terrorism. In March Khalid Massoud

:05:51. > :05:53.ploughed into people on Westminster Bridge before being shot dead as he

:05:54. > :05:57.approached the house of parliament with a knife. In June three men

:05:58. > :06:02.drove down London Bridge before attacking people in Borough market

:06:03. > :06:05.with knives. And later that month worshippers near Finsbury Park

:06:06. > :06:09.Mosque were struck by a car. One man died. The problem is that stopping

:06:10. > :06:13.these kind of attacks is hard. Here at Westminster Bridge they have

:06:14. > :06:17.installed these barriers to stop the vehicle is ramming into pedestrians

:06:18. > :06:22.on the bridge. But an attacker could just pick a different crowded place.

:06:23. > :06:27.The authorities also looking at things like more checks on people

:06:28. > :06:32.making short notice rentals of vans. But the problem is these attacks

:06:33. > :06:36.require just everyday items, just a car, no guns or explosives, and with

:06:37. > :06:41.so little planning required it can be hard to spot them and stop them.

:06:42. > :06:47.New shock absorbing barriers like this one shown in a test may offer

:06:48. > :06:51.some protection but counterterrorism experts caution they cannot stop all

:06:52. > :06:55.attacks happening. It is an almost impossible thing to prevent

:06:56. > :06:59.completely, but you can try to make it a little bit more difficult for

:07:00. > :07:03.the terrorist, and that to some extent is all that we can do. The

:07:04. > :07:07.way we stop this from happening is by preventing people from becoming

:07:08. > :07:10.radicalised or by people being willing to come forward and saying,

:07:11. > :07:15.I know someone that might be going to do this because that is how to

:07:16. > :07:23.stop it. This is one of the man authorities believe responsible, and

:07:24. > :07:26.so-called Islamic State said what it called its soldiers carried out the

:07:27. > :07:30.attack, responding to its call. But this does not always mean there was

:07:31. > :07:33.a direct link with the group. And one major concern for security

:07:34. > :07:37.services around the world is that these kind of attacks can be carried

:07:38. > :07:38.out with little or no training, direction or co-ordination.

:07:39. > :07:40.We'll have more updates on the investigation into that

:07:41. > :07:43.attack throughout the programme this morning.

:07:44. > :07:50.Overnight of course we know that there were five suspected terrorists

:07:51. > :07:56.shot dead. This is the scene in Cambrils. Cambrils is a seaside

:07:57. > :08:00.resort around 100 kilometres from Barcelona and those shootings

:08:01. > :08:03.overnight directly link police say two events in Barcelona. And

:08:04. > :08:07.throughout the programme we will be in Barcelona as well. We are hearing

:08:08. > :08:15.stories and many will have heard them already of the terror as people

:08:16. > :08:18.fled. This van careered down the street, packed with pedestrians and

:08:19. > :08:24.tourists from all different parts of the world. And people hiding in

:08:25. > :08:28.restaurants, being given safe places to go to by residents as well. We

:08:29. > :08:31.will hear lots of different eyewitnesses talking to us here on

:08:32. > :08:36.the programme this morning and we will keep you up-to-date of course

:08:37. > :08:40.with that situation as well. As far as we understand they have still not

:08:41. > :08:42.found the driver of the van. We will keep you right up-to-date with the

:08:43. > :08:44.latest news as well he on Breakfast. It's emerged that the Defence

:08:45. > :08:48.Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, has personally apologised

:08:49. > :08:50.to the mother of a soldier killed in a lightly armoured

:08:51. > :08:53.Snatch Land Rover in Iraq. The BBC has seen the letter sent

:08:54. > :08:56.to Sue Smith, whose son Private Philip Hewett died

:08:57. > :08:58.in a bombing in 2005. Our legal affairs correspondent

:08:59. > :09:15.Clive Coleman reports. Sue Smith's some private Hewitt was

:09:16. > :09:21.killed while travelling in a lightly armoured Snatch Land Rover in Iraq

:09:22. > :09:26.July 2000 and five. Seu hoped an inquest to last five days would

:09:27. > :09:31.provide answers about the Smack and how Philip died but it lasted just

:09:32. > :09:35.three Alice -- 2005. She found an inability to get answers from the

:09:36. > :09:39.Ministry of Defence maddening -- hour. Sometimes I thought they just

:09:40. > :09:46.wanted me to go away or die. I couldn't give up. In 2013 Seu and

:09:47. > :09:49.two other families of soldiers killed in Snatch Land Rover is one a

:09:50. > :09:55.landmark ruling at the Supreme Court enabling them to sue the MoD because

:09:56. > :09:58.of the Human Rights Act was deemed to apply to soldiers on the

:09:59. > :10:03.battlefield. It was the publication here in July last year of the report

:10:04. > :10:07.into the enquiry into the Iraq war by Sir John Chilcot that changed

:10:08. > :10:11.everything. It gave a damning assessment of how for years the

:10:12. > :10:17.Ministry of Defence failed to replace the inadequate and lightly

:10:18. > :10:22.armoured snatch land Rovers. Almost a year after the Chilcott report,

:10:23. > :10:26.Sue's case and two other families were settled. She received a letter

:10:27. > :10:44.of apology from the Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, in which

:10:45. > :10:51.he wrote... It means that he didn't die for nothing, at the end of it

:10:52. > :10:57.all. That is something. That is the only thing I can say. Sue's 12 year

:10:58. > :10:59.legal battle with the army that send her son to Iraq is finally over, but

:11:00. > :11:02.her grief will endure. The UK has pledged ?5 million

:11:03. > :11:06.to help the victims of the mud slide in the west African

:11:07. > :11:08.state of Sierra Leone. 400 people are known to have died

:11:09. > :11:11.and 600 are still missing after torrential rain caused

:11:12. > :11:14.the side of a mountain to collapse, engulfing a suburb of

:11:15. > :11:16.the capital Freetown. The International Development

:11:17. > :11:18.Secretary, Priti Patel, said the money would be

:11:19. > :11:20.used to provide food, Portugal has declared a state

:11:21. > :11:29.of emergency so it can access funds to combat fires that are devastating

:11:30. > :11:32.some of the country's forests. Thousands of firefighters have been

:11:33. > :11:35.tackling huge blazes in recent days and residents of several

:11:36. > :11:37.villages have been evacuated Food manufacturers will be told

:11:38. > :11:46.to reduce calories in products including pizzas, burgers and ready

:11:47. > :11:49.meals as part of the campaign to tackle childhood

:11:50. > :11:50.obesity in England. Last year, the government asked

:11:51. > :11:53.companies to cut the sugar But charities and health campaigners

:11:54. > :12:12.say ministers "must try harder" Food manufacturers and retailers

:12:13. > :12:17.have already been told to cut sugar content by one fifth by 2020. It is

:12:18. > :12:20.not compulsory but when the childhood obesity strategy was

:12:21. > :12:23.unveiled last year there were hints that if the industry didn't comply

:12:24. > :12:28.there would be legislation. Now the same approach is to be adopted for

:12:29. > :12:31.calorie content in manufactured products including ready meals,

:12:32. > :12:36.pizza, curry, savoury snacks and sandwiches. This could mean smaller

:12:37. > :12:40.portions or reducing high calorie ingredients. No figures have yet

:12:41. > :12:45.been announced. An average man is said to need around 2500 calories a

:12:46. > :12:49.day to maintain a healthy body weight. For an average woman the

:12:50. > :12:55.figure is around 2000. For school-aged children it is anything

:12:56. > :13:00.between 1600 and 2500. Health officials say people on average

:13:01. > :13:04.consume between 200 and 300 calories more than they should, so action has

:13:05. > :13:09.to be taken. We know through our work on salt that a voluntary

:13:10. > :13:12.programme of salt reduction has worked. We are seeing very positive

:13:13. > :13:18.signs from the industry on sugar reduction. So we consider that a

:13:19. > :13:21.calorie reduction programme would be possible as well. The National

:13:22. > :13:26.Obesity Forum said there was next to nothing to show for the government's

:13:27. > :13:30.last 12 months of work, and that was a serious disappointment. The

:13:31. > :13:32.British Medical Association said the government hadn't strengthened

:13:33. > :13:33.existing controls on how unhealthy food and in some marketed to

:13:34. > :13:40.children. -- drinks are marketed. We can return to our main story

:13:41. > :13:43.and Spanish police say they've stopped a second terror attack,

:13:44. > :13:46.shooting and killing five people in the town of Cambrils,

:13:47. > :13:51.south of Barcelona. The operation's linked

:13:52. > :13:54.to yesterday's van attack that left Our Europe correspondent

:13:55. > :14:10.Gavin Lee is in Barcelona. Gavin, you're overlooking Las

:14:11. > :14:13.Ramblas, the scene of the attack. Just tell us a little more of what

:14:14. > :14:23.we know what happened yesterday afternoon. Well, the chronology of

:14:24. > :14:30.what police said happen, as you can see, the police have lifted the

:14:31. > :14:34.police caught him, this is where the van finished after 500 metres

:14:35. > :14:39.driving a long Las Ramblas at up to 50 miles an hour through the crowd

:14:40. > :14:43.of people -- police cordon. The whole place was packed. People said

:14:44. > :14:46.you couldn't move, it is the busiest, most famous promenade in

:14:47. > :14:51.the whole of Spain. What the police are saying is after the car drove,

:14:52. > :14:55.use or scene where there were bodies lying in the street, some people

:14:56. > :15:00.were rushing to help, some 13 people killed. More than 80 people injured.

:15:01. > :15:05.15 people currently in a critical condition in hospital. The driver of

:15:06. > :15:09.the car fled on foot. He hasn't been seen since. The manhunt for him

:15:10. > :15:15.continues. What we know of a wider attack which the Prime Minister,

:15:16. > :15:22.Trade Minister Rajoy, says is a jihadist attack, is two men 500

:15:23. > :15:26.metres from here were arrested in connection with the attack, one of

:15:27. > :15:29.them, Driss Oukabir, is the man whose name was on the rental

:15:30. > :15:36.agreement. There was a firm mandate was shot dead by police after a car

:15:37. > :15:40.chase" in the city. There was a second attempted attack. 120

:15:41. > :15:46.kilometres south of here in a town called Cabrils on the coast five

:15:47. > :15:51.people injured after Cabrils drove into them. Some people in the car at

:15:52. > :15:59.the A to B wearing suicide vests. And the moment is these attacks are

:16:00. > :16:03.linked. We have six people dead, two questioned and a manhunt for the

:16:04. > :16:09.main suspect driver and no real sense of how big this attack is.

:16:10. > :16:13.Yes, Gavin, as you take us through what is really now quite a complex

:16:14. > :16:18.pattern of events, all linked, as police are saying, really getting a

:16:19. > :16:23.sense of the sale of what happened, both there and now with the other

:16:24. > :16:27.link events. The thing to point out about this is you can probably hear

:16:28. > :16:32.and see behind me that people with suitcases just art into a pair with

:16:33. > :16:37.children who many of them overnight were waiting for some of them 9-10

:16:38. > :16:43.hours in the dark, on the one hand to as police a evacuate the city, to

:16:44. > :16:47.keep away, on the other side tourist, thousands of them without

:16:48. > :16:51.hotels, people just arriving. Locals told to stay away and the bars and

:16:52. > :16:55.restaurants as well for five hours last night the supermarkets were all

:16:56. > :16:58.hidden and told to stay and keep quiet. The police went door-to-door

:16:59. > :17:02.to question people to find out whether one of those involved in the

:17:03. > :17:06.attack was still here. This is the biggest terrorist attack in Spain

:17:07. > :17:11.for more than ten years since the Madrid bombings in 2004. And right

:17:12. > :17:16.now we are just at the start of this investigation. As we look at the

:17:17. > :17:19.street behind you a lot of that people from the UK will know

:17:20. > :17:22.Barcelona well and they will have been to that place. They will be

:17:23. > :17:25.thinking themselves and security analysts will be thinking about what

:17:26. > :17:28.protection could be in place and how in other big European cities

:17:29. > :17:33.precautions have been taken about those kind of areas where there are

:17:34. > :17:38.lots of pedestrians. And we look at the street and seek that now.

:17:39. > :17:47.UN I spoke after the attack in Nice, the attack on Brussels, the truck

:17:48. > :17:56.attack in Berlin, this has become a thing where big pedestrian areas are

:17:57. > :18:00.cordoned off. The other senses, according to the Spanish media, the

:18:01. > :18:05.CIA warned Spanish officials two months ago to say that Las Ramblas

:18:06. > :18:14.was being targeted, to be prepared. It may explain why the eyewitnesses

:18:15. > :18:18.on the street say the police were rapid in their response. But still

:18:19. > :18:23.this morning no new details yet as to where this man-hunt is going, as

:18:24. > :18:28.the police continue their search. For the moment, thank you. We will

:18:29. > :18:37.be speaking to you throughout the morning. And some of the tourists

:18:38. > :18:41.caught up in the event, and we will be speaking to some of those caught

:18:42. > :18:47.up in the event shortly. This is a shot taken from Cambrils, where

:18:48. > :18:50.overnight there has been another incident which police in Spain are

:18:51. > :18:55.saying was connected to Barcelona. They have shot dead five suspected

:18:56. > :19:02.terrorists in the seaside resort of Cambrils during the night, saying

:19:03. > :19:05.they were thwarting what they believed to have been an attack

:19:06. > :19:08.similar to the one in Barcelona hours earlier. So lots of questions

:19:09. > :19:13.still to be answered about the connection between these two events,

:19:14. > :19:17.and exactly what is going on. And as Gavin was saying they are still

:19:18. > :19:22.searching and they haven't yet found the man who was driving the van in

:19:23. > :19:25.Barcelona. We will try and get to the bottom of exactly what is going

:19:26. > :19:29.on, but the authorities at the moment are still investigating. So

:19:30. > :19:32.many things happening, we will keep you right up to date throughout the

:19:33. > :19:33.morning and speak the eyewitnesses as well.

:19:34. > :19:35.Here is Matt with a look at this morning's weather,

:19:36. > :19:39.and he is at the Albert Dock in Liverpool.

:19:40. > :19:46.Good morning. A very good morning to you as well. The reason we are here

:19:47. > :19:52.as this will be the start in finishing point of the clip around

:19:53. > :19:56.the world race. It is one of the world's longest ocean races,

:19:57. > :20:03.covering 40,000 nautical miles over 11 months, over six continents and

:20:04. > :20:07.six ocean crossings. There will only be one professional sailor, the rest

:20:08. > :20:11.of the crew entirely made up of amateurs -- Clipper Round the World

:20:12. > :20:15.Yacht Race. 40% of the amateurs had never sailed before in their life.

:20:16. > :20:18.We will be talking to one of those later in the programme and to the

:20:19. > :20:22.founder later, in around half an hour's time. But here, at the

:20:23. > :20:27.moment, we have a shower pushing its way through and it is a sign of what

:20:28. > :20:31.is to come for many of you. Taking a look at the forecast, it is a day

:20:32. > :20:36.once again across the UK of sunshine and showers but unlike yesterday and

:20:37. > :20:39.the day but all there will be a bit more in the web showers than we have

:20:40. > :20:43.seen. So hard pressed to completely avoid them. Wet at the moment across

:20:44. > :20:46.parts Scotland. Showers will be pushing their way to the north-east,

:20:47. > :20:49.where they will become quite heavy and persistent, and this is where we

:20:50. > :20:53.could see around 50 millimetres, that is around two inches of rain,

:20:54. > :20:56.throughout the day. Brightening up a little bit in western Scotland

:20:57. > :20:59.compared to what we have at the moment. A bit of sunshine between

:21:00. > :21:02.the showers. Heading further south across Midlands, East Anglia and the

:21:03. > :21:06.south-east, this is where we will have a few showers to start with. Do

:21:07. > :21:10.not leave your umbrella because there will be a few more developing,

:21:11. > :21:12.a greater chance of one or two coming your way compared to

:21:13. > :21:16.yesterday. Blustery winds bringing the showers in, and that wind will

:21:17. > :21:19.be pretty lively at times towards the south-western and western parts

:21:20. > :21:22.of Wales. You may be stubborn sunshine but showers will never be

:21:23. > :21:25.too far away, and some heavy showers working into Northern Ireland,

:21:26. > :21:29.especially pushing across southern parts. Those showers really will get

:21:30. > :21:34.going. The most persistent rain will be in the of Scotland. The showers

:21:35. > :21:37.could come with hail and thunder across England, Wales and Northern

:21:38. > :21:41.Ireland. You would be completely hard pressed to avoid them but there

:21:42. > :21:44.could be some sunshine around at times, and in the sunshine,

:21:45. > :21:48.especially in the south-east, you might get 20 degrees. Through the

:21:49. > :21:51.day, temperatures for most of the teams. The winds could pick up into

:21:52. > :21:58.the evening across Northern Ireland, Wales and England in particular. We

:21:59. > :22:00.could see further heavy showers working their way eastwards.

:22:01. > :22:04.Improvements towards the north-east of Scotland overnight and because it

:22:05. > :22:08.stays blustery overnight, temperatures should not drop away

:22:09. > :22:13.too much. Maybe down into single figures through some rural parts for

:22:14. > :22:17.the weekend. As for Saturday, but last three to begin with and a few

:22:18. > :22:21.showers around, especially across western areas. Compared to today,

:22:22. > :22:23.fewer showers by and large in northern and eastern parts of

:22:24. > :22:27.Scotland will have about the improved day. A lot more in the way

:22:28. > :22:32.of dry weather. Temperatures similar to today's values but the winds

:22:33. > :22:35.eased down and touch it will feel a touch warmer. As we go into Saturday

:22:36. > :22:42.night the showers continue to clear. We will see winds for that light is

:22:43. > :22:45.so probably a bit of a cool night to take us into Sunday. Competitions as

:22:46. > :22:54.we go into Sunday. We have the remnants of what was Hurricane Gert.

:22:55. > :22:58.There is the chance of some heavy burst of rain working in from the

:22:59. > :23:03.south-west. And with that comes some slightly humid air as well. What I

:23:04. > :23:07.will say about Sunday's forecast, if you have got plans to change them

:23:08. > :23:12.yet, because that forecast could change. I will keep you updated. In

:23:13. > :23:18.the very much, we will see you throughout the programme. We will

:23:19. > :23:22.look through the front pages. It is worth a word of caution that

:23:23. > :23:28.inevitably because of the events in Barcelona, some of the photographs

:23:29. > :23:33.chosen contains some very grim images. Unavoidable, I'm afraid.

:23:34. > :23:40.Particular cell inside pages. On the front page of the Times, they write

:23:41. > :23:44.simply evil strikes again. Tourists and residents trying to help one of

:23:45. > :23:48.the victims of that attack in Barcelona. On the front page of the

:23:49. > :23:52.Daily Mail, they call this a massacre and some of the images of

:23:53. > :23:56.the immediate aftermath, and inside more coverage. Drawing attention

:23:57. > :24:01.amongst other things, many of the papers drawing attention to just how

:24:02. > :24:04.many people go to Las Ramblas. It is one of those places of an evening

:24:05. > :24:08.where so many people spend time. During the afternoon we know it is

:24:09. > :24:14.absolutely packed, with many holidaymakers, are very, very famous

:24:15. > :24:18.place. It is the sort of Mecca. And all of these victims coming from all

:24:19. > :24:22.over the world. It is very much a tourist destination, as well as

:24:23. > :24:26.people who live in Barcelona, as well. The front page of the Daily

:24:27. > :24:30.Telegraph, more pictures. Van ploughing into the crowd, killing at

:24:31. > :24:36.least 13 people. The van jumping onto the pavement, and mowing down

:24:37. > :24:40.pedestrians in its way. So many stories about how people managed to

:24:41. > :24:41.escape. We will hear one of those now, actually.

:24:42. > :24:43.People fleeing the attack in Barcelona yesterday were forced

:24:44. > :24:48.Jessica Tanner was shopping when the van hit a nearby market stall.

:24:49. > :24:58.Jessica, good morning to you. I know you are OK, but tell us what

:24:59. > :25:06.happened. What did you see? My friend and I were shopping along Las

:25:07. > :25:12.Ramblas. We were actually where the... The stall where the van first

:25:13. > :25:16.drove into, we were taking pictures of the street. And there was a shop

:25:17. > :25:20.across the road may friend wanted to go into. We crossed the street, and

:25:21. > :25:26.literally minutes later we hear a massive bang behind us. Screaming,

:25:27. > :25:33.and crying. And instinctively we just ran with the crowd, and he had

:25:34. > :25:39.in some of the local shops. And they were trying to throw the shutters

:25:40. > :25:47.down and the police ran towards Las Ramblas. I think at first everyone

:25:48. > :25:53.was just praying it was just a road accident or collision. So we went

:25:54. > :25:56.back up to the main road to see if everything was OK, as it seemed safe

:25:57. > :26:02.at the time. The police were actually tapering off the area, and

:26:03. > :26:09.telling us that we needed to go away -- taping. And as we started to turn

:26:10. > :26:17.we could hear people shouting that shots had been fired. So everybody

:26:18. > :26:22.ran towards either a cafe or shop, and all the shutters were being

:26:23. > :26:25.thrown down and people were diving into the shutters. Are clearly

:26:26. > :26:32.terrifying experience. How long did you have to take refuge for? We were

:26:33. > :26:36.in there for about two hours. The locals had been... I would say the

:26:37. > :26:43.emergency services and the locals have been wonderful. Everyone has

:26:44. > :26:47.stuck together, they let us judge our phones, so that we could wring

:26:48. > :26:51.our families. They gave us drinks. People were offering to give people

:26:52. > :27:00.lifts home and taxis were offering to give lifts to tourists. But we

:27:01. > :27:04.were terrified, because there was banging on the shutters and voices

:27:05. > :27:08.saying that it was the police, and it was just terrifying because

:27:09. > :27:12.everyone in the cafe froze because we had no idea if it really was the

:27:13. > :27:17.police. And it took ages, and a lot of courage, before finally the cafe

:27:18. > :27:24.owner slowly opened the gates, and it was the police. They told us it

:27:25. > :27:33.was safe. Jessica, are you OK? Yes, yes. Well, absolutely heartbroken,

:27:34. > :27:37.but... Well, I appreciate your time. Thank you very much indeed for

:27:38. > :27:41.joining us and telling us about what was clearly a very terrifying

:27:42. > :27:49.experience for you. Best of luck for the best of your travels, as well.

:27:50. > :27:52.We will keep you updated with the police investigation, which is

:27:53. > :27:53.ongoing. We know a number of terrorist suspects were shot

:27:54. > :27:55.overnight. Time now to get the news,

:27:56. > :31:16.travel and weather where you are. I'm back with the latest

:31:17. > :31:24.from the BBC London newsroom Plenty more on our website

:31:25. > :31:28.at the usual address. Now, though, it is back

:31:29. > :31:32.to Charlie and Louise. This is Breakfast with Charlie Stayt

:31:33. > :31:34.and Louise Minchin. Spanish police say they have shot

:31:35. > :31:37.dead five suspected terrorists thought to be linked to the van

:31:38. > :31:40.attack in Barcelona which killed The suspects, who were wearing

:31:41. > :31:44.explosive belts, were killed overnight in the resort of Cambrils

:31:45. > :31:47.after they drove a car into pedestrians,

:31:48. > :31:48.injuring seven people. Fitzroy Davies was on

:31:49. > :32:00.holiday in the resort. Some people started running past us,

:32:01. > :32:04.and then one of our friends look down the street and says, run. Then

:32:05. > :32:11.the next thing we saw this guy coming running at us. Someone

:32:12. > :32:15.shouted, call the police, call the police. And then the next thing the

:32:16. > :32:20.police were right there. It was really quick. And then they started

:32:21. > :32:25.shouting at the guy. And then the next thing they just shot him, they

:32:26. > :32:31.shot him and then he fell on the ground, and then he got back up and

:32:32. > :32:33.then... Like, he went towards the police, and then they shot him again

:32:34. > :32:34.and then that was it. Police are still searching

:32:35. > :32:36.for the driver who carried out the deadly attack at Las Ramblas

:32:37. > :32:39.in Barcelona yesterday. More than 100 injured when a van

:32:40. > :32:42.was driven into crowds So far, two people have been

:32:43. > :33:00.arrested in connection I saw a white van with the side door

:33:01. > :33:04.open. We heard gunshots. Whether it was the police or from the van, I

:33:05. > :33:06.don't know. We didn't hang around for that. We ran into the Burger

:33:07. > :33:14.King to get shelter. Joan is visiting from Amsterdam and

:33:15. > :33:21.was on Las Ramblas when the attack happened. I left a shop 50 metres

:33:22. > :33:25.from Las Ramblas, walking to Las Ramblas when I heard different

:33:26. > :33:29.bangs. It was not shooting, but accidental bangs, and then I saw

:33:30. > :33:35.people falling on the pavement, I think some six people. And then I

:33:36. > :33:39.was doubting what to do, to run towards, but it was very unclear, we

:33:40. > :33:43.were not sure what was going to happen. And then people ran towards

:33:44. > :33:47.the victims on the ground and then we then I think half a minute or a

:33:48. > :33:50.minute there was police and ambulances.

:33:51. > :33:56.Throughout Breakfast this morning we will bring you up-to-date with the

:33:57. > :34:03.very latest. There seem to be two incidents. This is the scene live in

:34:04. > :34:11.Cambrils where Spanish police have shot dead five. Six people were

:34:12. > :34:14.injured as a car was driven into a crowd of people. Four of the

:34:15. > :34:19.attackers in that event were shot dead at the scene. Later confirming

:34:20. > :34:22.that a fifth person had died of their injuries. They say that about

:34:23. > :34:28.that event that they were carrying explosive belts. That is at the

:34:29. > :34:33.scene this morning. There is an ongoing investigation going on in

:34:34. > :34:38.the seaside town which will be filled with holidaymakers from Spain

:34:39. > :34:44.and across the world. This is very much a seaside town where evidence

:34:45. > :34:48.happened overnight last night. In Barcelona in Las Ramblas, this is

:34:49. > :34:55.the scene this morning. Some parts of Las Ramblas, the barriers have

:34:56. > :34:59.been put down. We know that 13 people killed in the attack in Las

:35:00. > :35:04.Ramblas and we know up to 100 others have been injured, some of them

:35:05. > :35:07.seriously. We will have more on the investigation of course throughout

:35:08. > :35:14.the programme this morning. Actually, right now we can speak

:35:15. > :35:17.with a security specialist. It happens that you are in Barcelona

:35:18. > :35:24.yesterday when this happened. What can you tell us? The situation

:35:25. > :35:28.evolved incredibly quickly. I was about one kilometre away from Las

:35:29. > :35:32.Ramblas, which is where I am right now. You can see it behind me. I was

:35:33. > :35:37.here a couple of hours before the incident took place. What we know,

:35:38. > :35:40.and certainly information has been confirmed by the local authorities,

:35:41. > :35:44.is obviously the attack took place here. And this is normally... At the

:35:45. > :35:48.moment it is the emptiest it has been. Normally it is absolutely

:35:49. > :35:52.packed, rammed with tourists and foreign visitors and locals

:35:53. > :35:56.obviously to the city. Yesterday was no different to any other day from

:35:57. > :35:59.what I have been told by my local contacts here. The development of

:36:00. > :36:05.this further attack overnight shows that there is very much an active

:36:06. > :36:09.cell operation, sells co-ordinating with each other here in Spain right

:36:10. > :36:13.now. And we are waiting on more information on last night's attack

:36:14. > :36:16.to see if there was any direct contact or whether it was simply

:36:17. > :36:20.triggered off the back of this attack in Barcelona. So many

:36:21. > :36:25.questions to be answered - give us a sense of where you are. This is

:36:26. > :36:31.quite a heavily pedestrianised zone, isn't it? No, it is not. As you can

:36:32. > :36:36.see guide me, I will try not to move around much, this boulevard is quite

:36:37. > :36:40.small. It is quite narrow. There is one lane either side for vehicles

:36:41. > :36:43.and vehicles move up and down here quite quickly. And on this concourse

:36:44. > :36:50.in which I am standing in the middle of it, there are usually an awful

:36:51. > :36:54.lot of tourists and pedestrians, there are human statues, there are

:36:55. > :36:59.traders, so a lot of activity, not on the pavements on either side, in

:37:00. > :37:03.the centre. So making for the ideal prospect for a terrorist to attack.

:37:04. > :37:06.What can you tell us about the fact that, as far as I understand, there

:37:07. > :37:13.were security warnings about the vulnerability of Las Ramblas? Yes,

:37:14. > :37:17.indeed. Las Ramblas and also the beach promenade. Yesterday, as I

:37:18. > :37:21.headed over here, I was about one kilometre away, the beaches are

:37:22. > :37:25.absolutely packed with visitors. This is peak season, after all.

:37:26. > :37:32.Therefore there are a lot of people. We have seen guards around, quite

:37:33. > :37:36.visible around the city this week, but I think again Spain has been on

:37:37. > :37:43.the same levels of alert pretty much as every other European city is

:37:44. > :37:46.because no other city is exempt from these kinds of threats. We know that

:37:47. > :37:51.the police were on the scene quickly. What will their priorities

:37:52. > :37:54.be right now? At the moment they will be undertaking their

:37:55. > :38:02.investigation. When I got here there were a lot of bluelight services,

:38:03. > :38:07.medics, Guarda, plainclothes police officers, and they set up the

:38:08. > :38:12.cordons very quickly. There are a lot of sidestreets, markets, squares

:38:13. > :38:16.off the side of Las Ramblas. They were pushing back the cordon and

:38:17. > :38:20.extending it every 15- 20 minutes. At the moment forensically they will

:38:21. > :38:24.look at the incident itself and gathering as much evidence as they

:38:25. > :38:30.can. There are a lot of leads following up on. Certainly the

:38:31. > :38:33.driver, who is still at large as we understand, and their identity is

:38:34. > :38:36.probably known to intelligence agencies. They will be looking for

:38:37. > :38:40.any close associates that could create any other problems or attacks

:38:41. > :38:45.on the mainland. That is just what they wanted to ask you as a final

:38:46. > :38:48.thought, because, as you say, it is peak tourist season, there are many

:38:49. > :38:53.tourist from all over the world including Britain in Spain at the

:38:54. > :38:57.moment. Yes, certainly the hotels around the city, mine included, have

:38:58. > :39:02.taken some very good proportions. They have got a much more robust

:39:03. > :39:05.physical security presence, quite a lot of them, including mine,

:39:06. > :39:09.blocking off vehicle access with large minivans to prevent vehicles

:39:10. > :39:14.coming up to the entrances of the hotel. So it is a very important

:39:15. > :39:18.thing for the city to try to settle back into it as much as it came in

:39:19. > :39:22.the wake of this horrific incident, which will be a challenge in itself.

:39:23. > :39:26.But especially to reassure the tourists and foreigners who are not

:39:27. > :39:29.only here, who are intending to travel here, that they have the

:39:30. > :39:34.situation in hand. And from what I am seeing I feel confident that they

:39:35. > :39:38.are on their game right now. Thank you very much. And I know you are

:39:39. > :39:44.with us through the programme. Thank you. We will keep you up-to-date

:39:45. > :39:50.with everything in connection to the attack. Reuters newsagency is a 26

:39:51. > :39:53.French citizens are known to have been injured, that is from the

:39:54. > :39:57.French Foreign Ministry. And of course we are awaiting the

:39:58. > :40:01.identities of 13 confirmed dead so far. So more on that of course

:40:02. > :40:02.throughout the programme this morning. Let's tell you about the

:40:03. > :40:06.other news as well. It's emerged that the Defence

:40:07. > :40:09.Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, has personally apologised

:40:10. > :40:12.to the mother of a soldier killed in a lightly armoured

:40:13. > :40:14.Snatch Land Rover in Iraq. Philip Hewett died

:40:15. > :40:16.in a bombing in 2005. Four years ago, his family won

:40:17. > :40:20.the right at the Supreme Court In his letter, Sir Michael

:40:21. > :40:24.apologises for the delay in introducing protective vehicles

:40:25. > :40:27.which he says "could have saved The UK has pledged ?5 million

:40:28. > :40:39.to help the victims of the mud slide in the west African

:40:40. > :40:42.state of Sierra Leone. 400 people are known to have died

:40:43. > :40:45.and 600 are still missing after torrential rain caused

:40:46. > :40:48.the side of a mountain to collapse, engulfing a suburb of

:40:49. > :40:50.the capital Freetown. The International Development

:40:51. > :40:51.Secretary, Priti Patel, said the money would be

:40:52. > :40:54.used to provide food, Portugal has declared a state

:40:55. > :40:58.of emergency so it can access funds to combat fires that are devastating

:40:59. > :41:01.some of the country's forests. Thousands of firefighters have been

:41:02. > :41:04.tackling huge blazes in recent days and residents of several

:41:05. > :41:06.villages have been evacuated Food manufacturers will be told

:41:07. > :41:12.to reduce calories in products including pizzas, burgers and ready

:41:13. > :41:15.meals as part of the campaign to tackle childhood

:41:16. > :41:16.obesity in England. Last year, the government asked

:41:17. > :41:19.companies to cut the sugar But charities and health campaigners

:41:20. > :41:22.say ministers "must try harder" The new plans could see the size

:41:23. > :41:40.of products reduced or ingredients are right up-to-date with the latest

:41:41. > :41:43.news and we will be live in Barcelona and also in Cambrils

:41:44. > :41:46.through the programme to keep you up-to-date with the emerging stories

:41:47. > :41:50.coming out of there and we will speak with eyewitnesses as well.

:41:51. > :41:54.Right now, though, Jessica has the sport. Talking Cricket this morning

:41:55. > :41:59.to start with because obviously England against the West Indies.

:42:00. > :42:03.Much built up because it was the first day-night Test in England and

:42:04. > :42:09.because it was played under floodlights there is talk of a pink

:42:10. > :42:13.ball being used - will it be different, how would it feel? I

:42:14. > :42:18.think the jury is still very much out on the final decision. We will

:42:19. > :42:22.hear from the England captain Joe Root in a second. The jury is out on

:42:23. > :42:26.whether it affects plate and whether it was any good for England to

:42:27. > :42:33.practise with this pink wall ahead of the Ashes. Yes, because the

:42:34. > :42:39.lights come on gradually as the natural light goes. They do. That is

:42:40. > :42:42.how it works in practice. And with cricket players in traditional white

:42:43. > :42:47.clothing, the ball would be lost, so they had to dye it. Let's find out

:42:48. > :42:50.from Joe Root himself, whether it made any difference.

:42:51. > :42:53.Day-night Test cricket arrived in England for the first time,

:42:54. > :42:56.and England took to it quite nicely, closing the opening day of the first

:42:57. > :43:00.After winning the toss, England lost early wickets

:43:01. > :43:03.but a partnership between skipper Joe Root and Alastair Cook put

:43:04. > :43:11.Cook, the last England captain, scored even more.

:43:12. > :43:14.He'll resume on 153 not out this afternoon, and England seem at ease

:43:15. > :43:24.with the controversial pink ball being used for this match.

:43:25. > :43:30.I think there were periods throughout the whole day really

:43:31. > :43:34.where, randomly, it started to move around, then it would go very quiet

:43:35. > :43:38.again. And I suppose trying to identify those quickly and playing

:43:39. > :43:42.accordingly is going to be very important. But we have a very

:43:43. > :43:45.skilful bowling unit that I am sure will be jumping at the bit to

:43:46. > :43:46.hopefully defend a very high first-innings lead.

:43:47. > :43:49.Adam Lyth hasn't been picked for England for a while,

:43:50. > :43:51.but he's scoring plenty of runs for Yorkshire.

:46:49. > :46:54.the year when you start noticing the evenings creeping in, don't you? I

:46:55. > :47:04.find it very disappointing. Good morning to you, Matt. -- good

:47:10. > :47:13.finish of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which begins this

:47:14. > :47:16.Sunday. Some of the yachts taking place behind me. 40,000 nautical

:47:17. > :47:23.mile race around the world, mainly by amateurs. To tell us more about

:47:24. > :47:28.it, the first person to sail non-stop around the globe in 1968,

:47:29. > :47:33.thank you very much for joining us. What made you want to set up this

:47:34. > :47:37.race? I think there is always an opening for adventure these days,

:47:38. > :47:42.but I was in Greenland and they told me how much it costs to climb Mount

:47:43. > :47:47.Everest and I realised I could set up an opportunity for people to sail

:47:48. > :47:50.around the world for half the price. I put an advert in the paper, got

:47:51. > :47:55.8000 ounces and thought I'd had better do it. The crucial thing is

:47:56. > :48:05.it is mainly amateurs, the only professionals are the skippers --

:48:06. > :48:09.8000 answers. It is difficult at the start, people are not used to living

:48:10. > :48:12.in a camp isolated from the rest of the world, the nearest humans

:48:13. > :48:18.probably being the space station. So they have to get used to giving and

:48:19. > :48:21.taking and working together. I keep saying to people, why do the easy

:48:22. > :48:25.things in life. You will have much more to be proud of doing the tough

:48:26. > :48:29.things, you don't have to boast about it, but you can be proud of

:48:30. > :48:33.it. The hardest thing they have to face is that solitude away from the

:48:34. > :48:39.rest of the world. That's right, and having to put up with other people,

:48:40. > :48:44.cheek by jowl for weeks. If you are taking part in another one, what

:48:45. > :48:47.sort of person are you looking for? A person with enthusiasm and

:48:48. > :48:53.willingness. I will turn them into a sailor. Good luck with the race, and

:48:54. > :49:02.the weather may play a part to begin with. Let's see what you have to

:49:03. > :49:06.say! We could have the remnants of an old hurricane with us as we go

:49:07. > :49:10.through the weekend. The day of sunshine and showers for the UK.

:49:11. > :49:13.Unlike yesterday there will be a few more showers around, so a greater

:49:14. > :49:16.chance of getting wet at least at some point during the day. The

:49:17. > :49:20.wettest parts will be in north-east Scotland where we have some hefty

:49:21. > :49:23.downpours in the west, pushing their way over the North Sea. Western

:49:24. > :49:27.Scotland should brighten up over the next few days and we should see a

:49:28. > :49:30.bit more sunshine at times. Showers rattling across northern England on

:49:31. > :49:32.the breeze, sunshine in between. Further south there are a few

:49:33. > :49:36.downpours across the south-east and East Anglia. They were clear and the

:49:37. > :49:40.next big batch of showers will be later this afternoon. There will be

:49:41. > :49:44.a lot of dry and sunny weather around for your morning commute but

:49:45. > :49:48.don't be fooled. If you want to stick your umbrella in just in in

:49:49. > :49:51.case, there will be more showers by the time you finish your journey

:49:52. > :49:54.later on. Showers in south-east England and Wales during the next

:49:55. > :49:58.few hours, some of those could become a little bit on the heavy

:49:59. > :50:00.side and it is around the showers the winds will be at their

:50:01. > :50:03.strongest. The showers properly quite persistent across southern

:50:04. > :50:06.parts of Northern Ireland in particular, working in the western

:50:07. > :50:10.Wales by the end of the afternoon. If you look at the chart through the

:50:11. > :50:13.day, notice that little clumps of blue, the showers, starting to

:50:14. > :50:16.appear just about anywhere. I can't promise anywhere will stay

:50:17. > :50:19.completely dry through the day. Worst of all across the north-east

:50:20. > :50:23.of Scotland where we could see up to 50 millimetres, two inches of rain.

:50:24. > :50:27.The wind coming in from the west and very last resort will feel cooler

:50:28. > :50:29.than yesterday. The best of the temperatures towards East Anglia and

:50:30. > :50:33.the south-east, probably into the low 20s here. It is going to remain

:50:34. > :50:37.and breezy, heavy with hail and thunder. And the wind could persist

:50:38. > :50:41.through the evening and overnight so if you are camping towards the south

:50:42. > :50:44.of the country in particular it is a night to really stamp down the tent

:50:45. > :50:48.pegs. Those winds will be particularly gusty. The temperatures

:50:49. > :50:51.should not drop away too much given the breeze. It means for the weekend

:50:52. > :50:55.we start on a cool and blustery night out of anything Saturday fewer

:50:56. > :50:59.showers than we have seen today. Fewer showers across western areas,

:51:00. > :51:06.not many reaching the eastern part of the country. The eastern parts of

:51:07. > :51:11.Scotland, similar to today's values but a touch warmer given the wind

:51:12. > :51:15.easing down later. As the winds is down, Saturday night will be a

:51:16. > :51:18.rather cool one. Into Sunday, a big publication as we start to see the

:51:19. > :51:22.remnants of what was Hurricane Gert coming away. Mainly the moisture

:51:23. > :51:26.rather than the wind. It will be a blustery day for some across the

:51:27. > :51:32.south-west on Sunday, but it is how far that Ren gets. Most will start

:51:33. > :51:36.dry with some sunshine, that will last into the north and east of the

:51:37. > :51:40.country, later turning more human. But if you haven't got any plans,

:51:41. > :51:42.don't change them yet. Stay tuned to the forecast because it could

:51:43. > :51:46.change. I will have more details throughout the morning. Back to

:51:47. > :51:54.Charlie and Louise. Will do, and it is a lovely sunrise behind you.

:51:55. > :52:01.Let's take you back to our main story, events in Barcelona and Spain

:52:02. > :52:06.overnight, and this is the scene in Las Ramblas, the scene of that

:52:07. > :52:11.devastating attack using a vehicle. 13 people were killed, and up to 100

:52:12. > :52:16.others injured, some of them very seriously. It is interesting looking

:52:17. > :52:20.at this image, many people will have been to Las Ramblas, but you can see

:52:21. > :52:24.the stores already setting up and you get a sense of how busy this

:52:25. > :52:27.street is. Even the day after this event, already many, many people

:52:28. > :52:32.using that street. Obviously locals who use it to move around Barcelona

:52:33. > :52:35.itself, but also the tourists, who of course flocked to Las Ramblas.

:52:36. > :52:42.That investigation ongoing, of course. And according to the Catalan

:52:43. > :52:46.regional government, citizens of some 24 different countries were

:52:47. > :52:52.amongst those who were affected, killed or injured in this attack. We

:52:53. > :52:56.know that one Belgian National is confirmed to have died in that

:52:57. > :53:00.attack. At the same time, overnight we have learned that Spanish police

:53:01. > :53:03.have shot dead five suspect that terrorists in Cambrils, which is

:53:04. > :53:08.about 100 kilometres south of Barcelona. We will bring you up to

:53:09. > :53:13.date throughout the morning, but a bit earlier we spoke to our Europe

:53:14. > :53:15.correspondent, who is in Barcelona, overlooking Las Ramblas, where the

:53:16. > :53:28.original attack took place. And this is where the white van

:53:29. > :53:32.finished, after 500m driving along Las Ramblas at up to 50 miles an

:53:33. > :53:36.hour through the crowd of people, it happened that 5pm yesterday

:53:37. > :53:39.afternoon. The whole place was packed, I was speaking to people

:53:40. > :53:43.yesterday and you couldn't move. This was the most famous promenade

:53:44. > :53:46.on the whole of Spain. What the police are saying is after the car

:53:47. > :53:50.drove, you could see where there were bodies lying in the street,

:53:51. > :53:56.some people were rushing to help, 13 people killed, more than 18 people

:53:57. > :54:00.injured, 50 people currently in a critical condition in hospital, the

:54:01. > :54:04.driver of the car fled on foot. He has not been seen since. The

:54:05. > :54:08.man-hunt continues for him. What we know of the wider attack, which the

:54:09. > :54:13.Prime Minister here, Mariano Rajoy, said is a jihadist, Islamist

:54:14. > :54:17.inspired attack, is that two men in a bar 500m from here were arrested

:54:18. > :54:27.in connection with the attack. One of them, a man called Driss Oukabir,

:54:28. > :54:31.is the man whose name appears to have been on the rental agreement.

:54:32. > :54:38.Another man was shot dead by police, there was a second attempted attack

:54:39. > :54:44.100 kilometres south of here in a town called Cambrils. This time, the

:54:45. > :54:47.police are claiming they shot five people dead, some of those in the

:54:48. > :54:51.car who appeared to have been wearing suicide vest and at the

:54:52. > :54:55.moment the main hypothesis from the police is that the two attacks are

:54:56. > :54:58.linked. We have six people dead, to make people being questioned and a

:54:59. > :55:03.man-hunt for this main suspect driver, and no real sense at the

:55:04. > :55:08.moment of how big this attack is. And as you take us through what is

:55:09. > :55:13.really now quite a complex pattern of events, we really are getting a

:55:14. > :55:17.sense of the scale of what happened yesterday, both they are, and now

:55:18. > :55:21.with those of other linked events. Yes, and the thing to point out

:55:22. > :55:24.about this is, you may be able to hear, or perhaps see behind me, some

:55:25. > :55:29.of the people with suitcases starting to appear with children,

:55:30. > :55:35.many of whom overnight were waiting for nine, ten hours in the dark. The

:55:36. > :55:40.police evacuated the city, keeping people away. The other side of this

:55:41. > :55:44.is tourists. Thousands of them were without hotels, locals living in

:55:45. > :55:48.their homes, told to stay away. And the bars and restaurants down here

:55:49. > :55:52.as well, for five hours last night the supermarkets were all told to

:55:53. > :55:55.keep quiet, while the police went door-to-door to question people, to

:55:56. > :55:58.find out whether one of those involved in the attack was still

:55:59. > :56:02.here. But this is the biggest terrorist attack, Charlie, in Spain

:56:03. > :56:07.for more than ten years, since the Madrid bombings back in 2004. And

:56:08. > :56:11.right now we are just at the start of this investigation. And as we

:56:12. > :56:16.look at the street behind it are, a lot of people from the UK will no

:56:17. > :56:19.Barcelona well and will have been to this place. And security analysts

:56:20. > :56:23.are thinking about what protection could be in place, and how in other

:56:24. > :56:28.big European cities precautions have been taken about those kind of areas

:56:29. > :56:31.where you know there are a lot of Austrians. And we look at that

:56:32. > :56:39.street and we inevitably think that now, don't we? -- a lot of

:56:40. > :56:44.pedestrians. This has become a common thing, where big pedestrian

:56:45. > :56:57.areas are cordoned off. Can you think of a bigger famous pedestrian

:56:58. > :57:01.area than this, this and the Champs-Elysees are perhaps the

:57:02. > :57:06.biggest ones. The police awareness may explain why it, when we spoke to

:57:07. > :57:10.some of the eyewitnesses, the police were Rabbit in their response. They

:57:11. > :57:15.were on the scene within minutes. But as I say, still this morning no

:57:16. > :57:16.new details yet as to where this man-hunt is going, as the police

:57:17. > :57:22.continue their search. Time now to get the news,

:57:23. > :00:48.travel and weather where you are. I'll be back with all

:00:49. > :00:52.the latest in half an hour. Now, though, it is back

:00:53. > :00:55.to Louise and Charlie. This is Breakfast with

:00:56. > :00:59.Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt. Spanish police say they have shot

:01:00. > :01:02.dead five suspected terrorists, thought to be linked to the van

:01:03. > :01:05.attack in Barcelona which killed The suspects, who were

:01:06. > :01:08.wearing explosive belts, were killed in the seaside resort

:01:09. > :01:11.of Cambrils overnight. Police are still searching

:01:12. > :01:14.for the driver who carried out Three days of mourning

:01:15. > :01:32.have been declared. We'll be live in Spain

:02:48. > :02:49.full forecast today, which contains the mix of sunshine and showers.

:02:50. > :02:51.Thank you. Our main story is those events

:02:52. > :02:55.in Spain where overnight five suspected terrorists were shot dead

:02:56. > :02:58.by police in the coastal Police say the men, some

:02:59. > :03:02.of whom were wearing explosive belts, are linked to the attack

:03:03. > :03:04.in Barcelona yesterday afternoon 13 belts, are linked to the attack

:03:05. > :03:08.in Barcelona yesterday afternoon. 13 people were killed

:03:09. > :03:10.there when a van was driven into crowds in a popular

:03:11. > :03:13.tourist area called Las Ramblas. It's believed 15 of those

:03:14. > :03:18.are in a critical condition. So far, two people have been

:03:19. > :03:20.arrested in connection with the attack in Barcelona,

:03:21. > :03:23.but police say they're still searching for

:03:24. > :03:25.the driver of the van. The latest on the situation now

:03:26. > :03:39.from our reporter Sarah Corker. In the early hours of Friday

:03:40. > :03:42.morning, a dramatic shootout in a holiday resort of Cambrils,

:03:43. > :03:45.120km south of Barcelona. The authorities say five suspected

:03:46. > :03:47.terrorists wearing what appeared to be suicide belts

:03:48. > :04:00.were shot dead by police. Police opened fire

:04:01. > :04:02.after the attackers drove The next thing, police arrived

:04:03. > :04:06.there, really quick. Then they started shouting

:04:07. > :04:09.at the guy and the next thing, The incident in Cambrils has been

:04:10. > :04:20.linked to the deadly than attacking in the heart of Barcelona

:04:21. > :04:23.just hours earlier. Hundreds of holidaymakers, locals,

:04:24. > :04:30.shoppers ran for their lives. This white van was used

:04:31. > :04:37.as a weapon to kill. For half a kilometre the vehicle

:04:38. > :04:40.ploughed into pedestrians on Spain's I saw a white van with

:04:41. > :04:43.the side door open. Whether it was on police or the van,

:04:44. > :04:48.I don't know, we didn't hang We ran into the Burger

:04:49. > :04:52.King to not get shot. Police released this

:04:53. > :04:58.photo of Driss Oukabir, born in Morroco, whose documents

:04:59. > :05:01.were used to hide the van, but latest reports suggest he told

:05:02. > :05:12.police his passport was stolen. Two people have been arrested

:05:13. > :05:14.but police say neither The so-called Islamic State group

:05:15. > :05:19.said it was behind the attack. TRANSLATION: I want to express

:05:20. > :05:22.the solidarity of the whole of Spain with Barcelona, today hit

:05:23. > :05:24.by jihadist terrorism, like other cities around

:05:25. > :05:27.the world before it. The authorities are now linking

:05:28. > :05:30.the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils with an explosion

:05:31. > :05:33.on Wednesday in the town of Alcanar, Police believe suspects at the house

:05:34. > :05:43.were preparing explosives. And, as people anxiously wait

:05:44. > :05:52.for news of loved ones, the authorities have warned

:05:53. > :05:56.the number of dead may rise. Our Europe correspondent Gavin Lee

:05:57. > :05:58.is in Barcelona overlooking Las Ramblas where the

:05:59. > :06:05.attack took place. This is an emerging story with many

:06:06. > :06:09.questions we don't know the answer to. What can you update us on? In

:06:10. > :06:14.the last couple of minutes the police in Spain confirmed that are

:06:15. > :06:19.looking at a wider terror cell. There is a bigger group of people

:06:20. > :06:25.based in Barcelona. They were not on a terror watch list. They were not

:06:26. > :06:29.on the radar. If we go back to the events that we know. At 5pm

:06:30. > :06:34.yesterday a white van ploughed through the crowd of people 50 miles

:06:35. > :06:38.an hour half a kilometre for the first time Las Ramblas has been open

:06:39. > :06:43.for the last hour. We know the man fled on foot and hasn't been seen

:06:44. > :06:49.since. The main suspects in the attack which killed 13 people, left

:06:50. > :06:54.88 injured, 15 in critical condition, is still on the run. Two

:06:55. > :06:59.men have been arrested in a bar close to Las Ramblas. Those we are

:07:00. > :07:02.told... One of them is the man believed to have had signed out or

:07:03. > :07:16.rented the vehicle. A Moroccan national living in Spain by the name

:07:17. > :07:22.of trees -- Driss Aloukbir. Police in a separate town, there was

:07:23. > :07:25.another car attack, five pedestrians injured, two in critical condition,

:07:26. > :07:30.and that is where the five men in the car were shot dead. Some are

:07:31. > :07:36.said to have been wearing suicide vests. They are looking at the

:07:37. > :07:40.incidence arrested. And further information. On Wednesday night

:07:41. > :07:52.there was an explosion south of here in Zahra. They found 20 bottles of

:07:53. > :07:57.butane gas and they found one person dead on the property. The manhunt

:07:58. > :08:06.after the biggest terror attack in Spain since 2004 is under way. So

:08:07. > :08:10.many eyewitness reports as to what happened with people fleeing and the

:08:11. > :08:18.rest of it. It seems the police were very quick on the scene. Rapid. The

:08:19. > :08:22.fact is to consider - Spanish reports suggest the CIA warned the

:08:23. > :08:26.Spanish authorities two months before the attack to say that there

:08:27. > :08:30.was going to be something planned on Las Ramblas and to be alert.

:08:31. > :08:35.Questions will start to come out about what was going on in terms of

:08:36. > :08:39.stopping people, stopping vehicles going the busiest, most famous

:08:40. > :08:45.pedestrian street in Spain. We saw what happened in Nice and before

:08:46. > :08:49.that. Right now the focus is quickly on focusing the manhunt on the one

:08:50. > :08:54.suspect who drove through people here who is still missing. Thank you

:08:55. > :08:59.very much. You are there through the morning to bring us the very latest.

:09:00. > :09:03.This is an ongoing situation that is changing all of the time and we will

:09:04. > :09:07.keep you right up-to-date. Yes. The government is making reference to

:09:08. > :09:08.this place called Cambrils, a coastal town.

:09:09. > :09:15.Just to give you a sense of the geography, this is a live shot

:09:16. > :09:20.looking out to sea, it is a coastal town 68 miles down the coast from

:09:21. > :09:25.Barcelona. This is the scene of the second attack. We know that five

:09:26. > :09:30.suspected terrorists were shot dead at the scene as a vehicle tried to

:09:31. > :09:34.ram into people. We know that the number of civilians were caught up

:09:35. > :09:40.in the attack. Two of them are in a serious condition. So, this is

:09:41. > :09:44.Cambrils, the focus of a link part of the investigation over what

:09:45. > :09:45.happened in and around Barcelona yesterday and more of that coming

:09:46. > :09:50.up. And we know that the attack happened

:09:51. > :09:55.in Barcelona, and you can see already it only happened at 5pm

:09:56. > :10:00.local time yesterday afternoon, but already people are returning to the

:10:01. > :10:05.street, as definitely was saying, it is a very busy popular tourist

:10:06. > :10:09.destination and this morning so many people returning there. We

:10:10. > :10:13.understand from the Spanish authorities that citizens of 24

:10:14. > :10:17.countries were among those affected by yesterday's attack. And we will

:10:18. > :10:24.keep you right up-to-date. An ongoing situation. Spanish police

:10:25. > :10:27.are looking at a wider terror cell linking this attack, what happened

:10:28. > :10:31.in Cambrils and something, an explosion, which happened on

:10:32. > :10:33.Wednesday night as well. We will keep you up-to-date with those

:12:33. > :12:33.including ready meals, pizzas, curries, savoury

:13:19. > :13:26.there was next to nothing to show for the government's

:13:27. > :13:28.last 12 months of work, and that was a serious

:13:29. > :13:30.disappointment. The British Medical Association said

:13:31. > :13:32.the government hadn't strengthened existing controls on how

:13:33. > :13:47.unhealthy food and drinks You are up-to-date with all of the

:13:48. > :13:49.latest news and the main story really is all about yesterday's

:13:50. > :13:50.attack in Barcelona. Yesterday's attack in Barcelona

:13:51. > :13:52.happened at the height of the holiday season

:13:53. > :13:54.and in one of Europe's The Foreign Office has issued advice

:13:55. > :13:58.to visitors to "stay inside and away from Las Ramblas"

:13:59. > :14:01.and wait for police to say We can speak now to Ethan Spibey

:14:02. > :14:06.who is on holiday in Barcelona and was caught up in

:14:07. > :14:13.the aftermath of the attack. Thank you so much for taking the

:14:14. > :14:18.time to speak to us this morning. Just give us a sense of where you

:14:19. > :14:23.were when things began to unfold. We were basically trying to find

:14:24. > :14:28.somewhere within one and half hours before we had crossed the main bit

:14:29. > :14:33.where the van hit and we were just looking for someone to relax with a

:14:34. > :14:37.glass of wine. We were sat on the cafe right on the corner and we have

:14:38. > :14:41.been there for about an hour. And I had my back towards the road and my

:14:42. > :14:50.partner was just facing towards it. And then there was just this

:14:51. > :14:55.almighty loud bang and it was the screams and then everybody just kept

:14:56. > :15:02.running. And then their worst tables, glasses everywhere. And my

:15:03. > :15:05.partner was just saying stay calm. It was like people had vanished and

:15:06. > :15:11.everybody was just running everywhere. And then there was a

:15:12. > :15:15.second round which scared everybody out and then everybody started

:15:16. > :15:18.running. We were pushed inside this cafe that was on the corner.

:15:19. > :15:29.Everyone was running everywhere just drive -- to try to hide. People can

:15:30. > :15:32.hear the emotion in your voice. I appreciate you taking us through

:15:33. > :15:43.what happened. How close were you from the van, how far? Within 100

:15:44. > :15:47.metres, within 50 - really close. When we turned around because the

:15:48. > :15:51.bodies on the floor. At first we wanted to help everybody. But as my

:15:52. > :15:57.partner said, you have to call the police. The police were there so

:15:58. > :16:02.quickly. It was only an hour before when we were saying, there are so

:16:03. > :16:07.many people around. And then as soon as it happened, within seconds they

:16:08. > :16:08.were surrounding, they were barricading the roads. They were

:16:09. > :16:18.really quick. You took shelter in a cafe, and you

:16:19. > :16:24.are there for quite some time, won't you, before you felt safe to emerge.

:16:25. > :16:29.Yes, we got into a cafe, and they started putting the shutters down.

:16:30. > :16:35.And because of the loud bangs, all that was going through my head was I

:16:36. > :16:38.was remembering Paris and London, obviously when the Paris attackers

:16:39. > :16:42.were just going into bars and restaurants, we were thinking we

:16:43. > :16:47.were going to get shot, and everybody was rushing upstairs. We

:16:48. > :16:53.were hiding in the corner, but because we were so close to where it

:16:54. > :16:57.happened, they opened the back door, so everyone escaped and ran up the

:16:58. > :17:03.road that way. And we were all just pressed against the wall in case

:17:04. > :17:08.another car came up. But yes, we were there for some time. One of the

:17:09. > :17:13.extraordinary things about this event, and you were so close to it,

:17:14. > :17:20.is that we have been showing the pictures of the area this morning,

:17:21. > :17:24.and some people will no Las Ramblas well. Already people are on that

:17:25. > :17:29.street, the stalls which there are set up. People will go back, as they

:17:30. > :17:34.are this morning. It has been opened already. It is a very busy

:17:35. > :17:37.pedestrian zone, absolutely packed. Presumably by 4pm yesterday

:17:38. > :17:42.afternoon this would have been absolutely packed with people.

:17:43. > :17:46.Absolutely. When we were trying to find somewhere to sit, you couldn't

:17:47. > :17:51.even walk in a straight line, because there were so many people

:17:52. > :17:58.around. I had never been to Barcelona before this trip, and I

:17:59. > :18:05.was saying to my partner how it is very touristy. It is quite nice,

:18:06. > :18:13.because everybody just having fun, no care in the world. And then

:18:14. > :18:18.something tragic like this happens, and it is really surreal. We are

:18:19. > :18:23.getting a sense this morning of the scale of this attack. We know that

:18:24. > :18:27.over 100 people injured, we know that 13 have been killed, and I am

:18:28. > :18:32.sure that your thoughts, as with those of a number of people, are

:18:33. > :18:36.with those who have been directly injured and killed. Yes, absolutely.

:18:37. > :18:40.We couldn't sleep last night, because when we were walking back to

:18:41. > :18:44.the hotel, we didn't even want to walk anywhere, because I thought I

:18:45. > :18:50.just want to be where the police. Seeing everybody on the roads, and

:18:51. > :18:54.hearing this morning about the second attack, my heart breaks for

:18:55. > :19:01.them. You kind of think, you don't ever think it is going to happen.

:19:02. > :19:05.You kind of give it a second thought, and I was saying to people

:19:06. > :19:08.yesterday, when you see these things of the news and you see people

:19:09. > :19:13.running, you don't convert handed until it is in your life as well. It

:19:14. > :19:18.is an experience and a feeling that will last with me forever. And I

:19:19. > :19:22.just feel for everybody else who is involved. Stephanie, we thank you

:19:23. > :19:27.for your time this morning, and we wish you well. I am so sorry you

:19:28. > :19:30.have been caught up in those events, but we wish you and your partner

:19:31. > :19:36.well. Thank you for taking time for us this morning. We have been

:19:37. > :19:39.speaking to a couple of eyewitnesses this morning, and so many of them

:19:40. > :19:44.speaking about the terror and fleeing and taking refuge in these

:19:45. > :19:48.shops. A programme of course this morning dominated by those events in

:19:49. > :19:52.Spain. It is very much an emerging story as police are still searching

:19:53. > :19:56.for the man who drove that vehicle in Barcelona. We know about events

:19:57. > :20:00.in Cambrils overnight, where five suspected terrorists had been shot

:20:01. > :20:03.as well. We will keep you right up to date throughout the morning.

:20:04. > :20:06.Here is Matt with a look at this morning's weather.

:20:07. > :20:12.He's at the Albert Dock in Liverpool.

:20:13. > :20:18.Very good morning to you. I am in Liverpool this morning. If you have

:20:19. > :20:23.not been with us all morning, the reason we are here is because on

:20:24. > :20:27.Sunday began the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. It is a biannual

:20:28. > :20:30.race which started in 1996. It is a 40,000 nautical mile race around the

:20:31. > :20:35.world, and the crew are mainly those formed of amateurs, believe it or

:20:36. > :20:39.not. Behind me we have a bit of calm for your Friday morning. A yoga

:20:40. > :20:44.session taking place. One of the crew members is a yoga instructor

:20:45. > :20:47.and is doing a little bit of a session for the rest of the cruise,

:20:48. > :20:52.just to give some muggy to UNICEF and to prepare them for what will be

:20:53. > :20:55.quite an arduous trip around the world. Certainly braver souls than I

:20:56. > :21:00.am. They have some tough challenges ahead of them. But the challenge

:21:01. > :21:05.today weatherwise is going to be a case of dodging the showers. Not

:21:06. > :21:08.just here but UK wide. Looking at the forecast, sunshine and showers

:21:09. > :21:12.really sums it up. Not really what you want to see in August, there

:21:13. > :21:15.will be more showers around in recent days and the cool and

:21:16. > :21:18.blustery wind as well. Heavy downpours across the west and south

:21:19. > :21:22.of Scotland. They will push towards the north-east and in the north-east

:21:23. > :21:25.they will remain all day long, probably the wettest place today.

:21:26. > :21:29.South of that, showers rattling from west to east across northern

:21:30. > :21:32.England, with gaps in between across the Midlands, East Anglia, and

:21:33. > :21:36.southern England as well. A few showers at the moment but they will

:21:37. > :21:40.start to get going through the day. Lively showers in the south-west

:21:41. > :21:44.England and Wales once again and as we go through the day those could

:21:45. > :21:47.come with the odd rumble of thunder. Some hail mixed in as well. Blustery

:21:48. > :21:50.winds to go with the showers. In Northern Ireland some longer spells

:21:51. > :21:54.of rain this morning across the southern areas, but the showers have

:21:55. > :21:58.a bit of a shift to them because of the wind. They will not stay with

:21:59. > :22:02.you for too long before the sunshine returns. Really, through the day,

:22:03. > :22:05.not many showers to begin with by and large but notice on the chart

:22:06. > :22:09.how little clumps of loose start to develop. That is an indication that

:22:10. > :22:12.very few of you will completely mist out, I can't promise anyone will

:22:13. > :22:16.stay completely dry. The wettest spots are in Scotland, where we

:22:17. > :22:20.could see as much as 50 millimetres, two inches of rainfall today.

:22:21. > :22:24.Lottery winds keeping things cooler than recent days. Temperatures in

:22:25. > :22:28.the mid-teens but towards the south and east into the low 20s at times,

:22:29. > :22:32.which will be nice enough. Showers into the evening steel, heavy and

:22:33. > :22:35.with hail and thunder. South-west England and south and Wales will

:22:36. > :22:39.probably see some of the strongest of those winds. Winds keeping up

:22:40. > :22:43.through the night, but it does stop the temperatures from falling away

:22:44. > :22:47.too much, holding in the team were quite a few of you. A rather cool

:22:48. > :22:52.stuff August into the weekend. Saturday the wind is there. Also

:22:53. > :22:55.will ease down through the day. There will be showers tomorrow,

:22:56. > :23:00.mainly in the west. Many eastern areas will stay dry for most of the

:23:01. > :23:04.day. Temperatures on the face of it the same as today. It may feel just

:23:05. > :23:08.that little bit nicer as the winds ease down and if you avoid the

:23:09. > :23:12.showers. A bit of a competition as we go through Saturday night in the

:23:13. > :23:16.Sunday. It will be cool, dry, fairly clear to begin with as we go through

:23:17. > :23:20.the night. A cool start to Sunday and at the moment it looks like most

:23:21. > :23:24.places will start dry on Sunday. Quite a bit of the north and east

:23:25. > :23:28.will get away with a dry and bright day. The question will be how much

:23:29. > :23:36.rain pushes in from the south-west. All coming from the remains of

:23:37. > :23:40.Hurricane Gert. How quickly that rain moves in could be crucial. Do

:23:41. > :23:44.not make this the last forecast to see if you have plans for Sunday. We

:23:45. > :23:48.will keep you updated not only for today but throughout the weekend as

:23:49. > :23:53.well. We will leave you free to join in the class behind. Which I am sure

:23:54. > :23:55.you are about to do. Thank you very much.

:23:56. > :24:02.37 soldiers lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan while travelling

:24:03. > :24:05.in vehicles deemed by the Chilcot Inquiry to be inadequate.

:24:06. > :24:08.Now letters of apology, written by the Defence Secretary,

:24:09. > :24:15.Sir Michael Fallon, to the families of three soldiers who died

:24:16. > :24:19.in the Snatch Land Rover have been made public for the first time.

:24:20. > :24:22.We can speak now to Roger Bacon, whose son, Major Matthew Baconm

:24:23. > :24:29.Thank you so much for joining us. You haven't got one of these

:24:30. > :24:33.letters, but you have seen it. What do you think about it? Well, I have

:24:34. > :24:37.seen the letter, and the first thing to say is that I am really pleased

:24:38. > :24:44.that Sue Smith and the other two have had this letter. Their efforts

:24:45. > :24:53.to get some kind of justice for losses of their loved ones has

:24:54. > :24:59.worked. And... But it has only worked because of the Chilcot

:25:00. > :25:04.Inquiry. They knew about this a long time ago. And when I read the

:25:05. > :25:08.letter, I thought, when I read that first line, we got to the end of the

:25:09. > :25:13.line and it says regret. And you just think to yourself that this is

:25:14. > :25:18.not enough. They should be saying they are really, really sorry about

:25:19. > :25:28.what has happened. To all those who died in Iraq. It is... Matthew died

:25:29. > :25:34.in the same year as Philip, from the same thing. He was travelling in a

:25:35. > :25:39.Snatch Land Rover, and he was killed by an IED. Now, those Snatch Land

:25:40. > :25:44.Rover are mobile coffins. That is what soldiers used to call them.

:25:45. > :25:49.They provided no protection whatsoever, and the military knew

:25:50. > :25:55.this, everybody knew this. That they were no good. They were not fit for

:25:56. > :25:59.purpose. So it seems to me that this has only come about as a result of

:26:00. > :26:04.the Chilcot Inquiry. And it has taken a year for them from the

:26:05. > :26:10.publication of it to actually come up with the conclusion that Chilcot

:26:11. > :26:15.was absolutely right, and that these vehicles were not fit for purpose.

:26:16. > :26:19.So to see it actually, as it were, in a letter, admitting that they

:26:20. > :26:24.were wrong, is extremely good. But it just shows what the failings were

:26:25. > :26:28.at the time. I am wondering, from your point of view, what you would

:26:29. > :26:32.like to happen next. Is it that you would like a similar letter, or what

:26:33. > :26:38.would you like to happen? Yes indeed. It does seem to me that

:26:39. > :26:42.these letters have been written as a direct consequence of the fact that

:26:43. > :26:46.legal action was taken against the Ministry of Defence. But what about

:26:47. > :26:50.those other 34 families whose loved ones died in exactly the same kind

:26:51. > :26:57.of circumstances? Shouldn't they also have received some kind of

:26:58. > :27:05.letter? From the Ministry, showing that they were extremely sorry for

:27:06. > :27:09.what happened, and that it is entirely due to the failings within

:27:10. > :27:13.the military machine that it has happened. Appreciate your time here

:27:14. > :27:20.this morning. We you with that thought.

:27:21. > :27:23.We will have all the latest from Barcelona, where 13 people have

:27:24. > :27:26.been killed and more than 100 injured following a terrorist

:27:27. > :30:52.Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are.

:30:53. > :30:55.Now, though, it is back to Louise and Charlie.

:30:56. > :31:04.This is Breakfast with Charlie Stayt and Louise Minchin.

:31:05. > :31:06.Spanish police say they have shot dead five suspected terrorists,

:31:07. > :31:10.thought to be linked to the van attack in Barcelona which killed

:31:11. > :31:13.The suspects, who were wearing explosive belts,

:31:14. > :31:15.were killed overnight in the resort of Cambrils,

:31:16. > :31:18.after they drove a car into pedestrians, injuring seven people.

:31:19. > :31:25.Fitzroy Davies was on holiday in the resort.

:31:26. > :31:33.Some people started running past us, and then one of our friends look

:31:34. > :31:43.Then the next thing we saw this guy coming running at us.

:31:44. > :31:46.Then someone shouted, "Call the police, call the police."

:31:47. > :31:49.And then the next thing the police were right there.

:31:50. > :31:52.And then they started shouting at the guy.

:31:53. > :31:56.And then the next thing they just shot him, they shot him and then

:31:57. > :31:59.he fell on the ground, and then he got back up and then...

:32:00. > :32:02.Like, he went towards the police, and then they shot him again

:32:03. > :32:07.Police are still searching for the driver who carried out

:32:08. > :32:12.the deadly attack at Las Ramblas in Barcelona yesterday.

:32:13. > :32:16.More than 80 people were injured when a van was driven into crowds

:32:17. > :32:20.So far, two people have been arrested in connection

:32:21. > :32:32.And in the last moments Spanish radio has reported a 30 rest and we

:32:33. > :32:35.will bring you up-to-date on that will be happening more information.

:32:36. > :32:37.Earlier we spoke with Stephanie Walton visiting Barcelona to

:32:38. > :32:44.celebrate her partner's birthday. We were really

:32:45. > :32:47.close and when we turned around because the bodies everywhere on the

:32:48. > :32:53.floor and obviously at first we wanted to help everybody. But my

:32:54. > :32:59.partner said, you have to call the police. They were there so quickly.

:33:00. > :33:06.It was only one hour before when we were like, there are so many police

:33:07. > :33:09.around, you know, why? Then as soon as it happened they were surrounded,

:33:10. > :33:14.barricading the road, they were really quick. It was really close.

:33:15. > :33:21.You took shelter in a cafe. You were there for quite sometime before you

:33:22. > :33:28.felt safe to emerge. Yeah. When we got into the cafe, they started

:33:29. > :33:37.putting the shutters down. And because of the loud bang, all that

:33:38. > :33:41.was going through my head was you know like in Paris and London, I

:33:42. > :33:47.thought, God, we are going to get shot. Everyone was rushing upstairs

:33:48. > :33:52.and we were hiding in the corner. But because we were so close to

:33:53. > :33:55.where it happened, they opened the back door so everybody escaped up

:33:56. > :33:58.the road and ran up the road that way.

:33:59. > :34:05.So many eyewitnesses talking about taking refuge. And there is a link

:34:06. > :34:10.between three different incidents. I want to take you live to the shot of

:34:11. > :34:17.Cambrils. You can see quite quickly a car in the centre of the street.

:34:18. > :34:23.And behind the car is the sea. Overnight Spanish police shot dead

:34:24. > :34:28.five suspected terrorists. They say some of the people... Another car

:34:29. > :34:33.drove into a crowd. Some of the people they shot dead were wearing

:34:34. > :34:35.explosive belts. People were injured in that attack and they are

:34:36. > :34:42.connecting that attack to what happened in Barcelona and also

:34:43. > :34:46.another event that happened in Alcanar. The Spanish police are

:34:47. > :34:52.talking right now of a wider terror cell. They say none of the people

:34:53. > :34:56.arrested on what was called a terror watch list. They are linking these

:34:57. > :35:03.three different events over the last couple of days in Spain. We have

:35:04. > :35:09.seen these images, and we assume at this stage it was the car that was

:35:10. > :35:14.used in the town of Cambrils. Just to give you a sense of the

:35:15. > :35:20.geography. Cambrils is 68 miles down the coast from Barcelona itself, so,

:35:21. > :35:25.some distance away. What is emerging this morning, you can see the

:35:26. > :35:31.removal truck is taking that car away. This morning you can see the

:35:32. > :35:34.sheer scale of the investigation the Spanish police are involved in. We

:35:35. > :35:38.have heard more about that and some more details about the injuries of

:35:39. > :35:41.those involved in the original Barcelona attack as well. We will

:35:42. > :35:47.keep you right up-to-date on Breakfast. And we want to tell you

:35:48. > :35:52.about other news as well this morning.

:35:53. > :35:55.Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, has personally apologised

:35:56. > :35:58.to the mother of a soldier killed in a lightly armoured

:35:59. > :36:02.Philip Hewett, died in a bombing in 2005.

:36:03. > :36:05.Four years ago, his family won the right at the Supreme Court

:36:06. > :36:09.In his letter, Sir Michael apologises for the delay

:36:10. > :36:11.in introducing protective vehicles which he says

:36:12. > :36:17.The UK has pledged ?5 million to help the victims of the mud slide

:36:18. > :36:19.in the west African state of Sierra Leone.

:36:20. > :36:22.400 people are known to have died and 600 are still missing

:36:23. > :36:25.after torrential rain caused the side of a mountain to collapse,

:36:26. > :36:27.engulfing a suburb of the capital Freetown.

:36:28. > :36:29.The International Development Secretary, Priti Patel,

:36:30. > :36:31.said the money would be used to provide food,

:36:32. > :36:38.Food manufacturers will be told to reduce calories in products

:36:39. > :36:41.including pizzas, burgers and ready meals as part of the campaign

:36:42. > :36:43.to tackle childhood obesity in England.

:36:44. > :36:46.Last year, the government asked companies to cut the sugar

:36:47. > :36:49.But charities and health campaigners say ministers "must try harder"

:36:50. > :36:54.The new plans could see the size of products reduced or ingredients

:36:55. > :37:04.Portugal has declared a state of emergency so it can access funds

:37:05. > :37:07.to combat fires that are devastating some of the country's forests.

:37:08. > :37:10.Thousands of firefighters have been tackling huge blazes in recent days

:37:11. > :37:12.and residents of several villages have been evacuated

:37:13. > :37:26.Exports of food and drink from Britain reached a record high

:37:27. > :37:30.The biggest sellers were whisky, salmon and beer, which has overtaken

:37:31. > :37:32.chocolate to be our third biggest seller abroad,

:37:33. > :37:35.helped by a growing taste for British craft beer in Asia.

:37:36. > :37:38.But while the weak pound has helped exports, it's meant that shoppers

:37:39. > :37:55.We will keep you up-to-date with events in Spain. We will be live in

:37:56. > :38:00.Barcelona this morning on Breakfast. Day-night Test cricket, which is new

:38:01. > :38:04.to us. It was yesterday, starting today and

:38:05. > :38:10.runs into the evening when the sun goes down and they play on the

:38:11. > :38:14.floodlights. Very interesting. Interesting to talk about how

:38:15. > :38:18.difficult it will be to play with. And I can tell you, good morning

:38:19. > :38:19.everyone, that England took to it quite nicely.

:38:20. > :38:21.Day-night Test cricket arrived in England for the first time,

:38:22. > :38:25.and England took to it quite nicely, closing the opening day of the first

:38:26. > :38:29.After winning the toss, England lost early wickets

:38:30. > :38:32.but a partnership between skipper Joe Root and Alastair Cook put

:38:33. > :38:36.Cook, the last England captain, scored even more.

:38:37. > :38:39.He'll resume on 153 not out this afternoon, and England seem at ease

:38:40. > :38:42.with the controversial pink ball being used for this match.

:38:43. > :38:45.I think there were periods throughout the whole day really

:38:46. > :38:48.where, randomly, it started to move around, then it would go

:38:49. > :38:51.And I suppose trying to identify those quickly and playing

:38:52. > :38:53.accordingly is going to be very important.

:38:54. > :38:57.But we have a very skilful bowling unit that I am sure will be chomping

:38:58. > :39:06.at the bit to hopefully defend a very high first-innings lead.

:39:07. > :39:09.Adam Lyth hasn't been picked for England for a while,

:39:10. > :39:11.but he's scoring plenty of runs for Yorkshire.

:39:12. > :39:14.Last night he broke the record for the highest British domestic

:39:15. > :39:17.He made 161 against Northamptonshire at Headingley.

:39:18. > :39:20.Lyth hammered seven sixes and 20 fours as Yorkshire reached 260-4,

:39:21. > :39:29.England will play France on Tuesday for a place in the final

:39:30. > :39:32.of the women's rugby World Cup, after beating the USA by 47

:39:33. > :39:36.Marlie Packer crossed the line twice as the defending champions ran

:39:37. > :39:40.in seven tries, to win their last Pool match and confirm their place

:39:41. > :39:55.In the Super League, Castleford beat Wakefield 45-20

:39:56. > :39:59.Jake Webster scored four of Castleford's eight tries,

:40:00. > :40:02.as they finished top of the table for the first time

:40:03. > :40:05.They did it with four games to spare.

:40:06. > :40:09.Everton are in a strong position to reach the Europa League group

:40:10. > :40:11.stage after a 2-0 first-leg win over Hajduk Split last night.

:40:12. > :40:14.But the match was overshadowed by crowd trouble.

:40:15. > :40:16.The Croatian side's supporters surged towards the Goodison Park

:40:17. > :40:19.pitch, and threw objects, including seats, as play was stopped

:40:20. > :40:23.Moments earlier, Michael Keane had scored his first goal for the club,

:40:24. > :40:32.while Idrissa Gueye completed the victory.

:40:33. > :40:35.Jo Konta's US Open preparations are going to plan, as she's

:40:36. > :40:37.into the quarter-finals of the Cincinatti Open.

:40:38. > :40:40.She beat Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets and will now face

:40:41. > :40:43.second seed Simona Halep for a place in the last four.

:40:44. > :40:45.And she can be fairly confident, having beaten Halep

:40:46. > :40:55.in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last month.

:40:56. > :41:00.Brilliant to see Johanna Konta in such good form. Very good, thank you

:41:01. > :41:06.very much. We want to keep you up-to-date with

:41:07. > :41:11.what is going on in Spain and we can show you the live shot we have at

:41:12. > :41:15.the moment of Cambrils, a seaside resort south of Barcelona. And

:41:16. > :41:19.overnight we know that Spanish police have shot dead while they are

:41:20. > :41:26.saying our five suspected terrorists after they drove again a car, and we

:41:27. > :41:33.presume this might be the car, into a crowd of people last night. Six

:41:34. > :41:37.people according to El Pais newspaper, injured in that incident,

:41:38. > :41:40.three of them police, and they shot dead five suspected terrorists and

:41:41. > :41:45.some of them appeared to be wearing a suicide bomb vest as well. This is

:41:46. > :41:49.an ongoing situation and police have many questions to answer this

:41:50. > :41:52.morning. We are picking up more information in connection with the

:41:53. > :41:57.original attack in Barcelona as well in terms of those killed and

:41:58. > :42:02.injured. At this stage 13 people we know to be killed in that attack.

:42:03. > :42:08.Those injured, the figures have been updated slightly. They say 88 people

:42:09. > :42:12.injured and citizens of 24 countries in all among those killed and the

:42:13. > :42:18.French Foreign Ministry this morning confirming of those injured, 26 were

:42:19. > :42:22.French nationals, so that information coming from the French

:42:23. > :42:25.Foreign Ministry. We have been speaking to eyewitnesses described

:42:26. > :42:29.what happened when the van drove through the crowds Barcelona in Las

:42:30. > :42:35.Ramblas. Jessica was shopping when the van hit a nearby market stall.

:42:36. > :42:41.My friend and I was shopping along Las Ramblas, we were actually where

:42:42. > :42:46.the first stall, where the van had driven into, we were taking pictures

:42:47. > :42:52.of the streets and my friend noticed a shot across the road that she

:42:53. > :42:55.wanted to go into. We crossed the street and literally minutes later

:42:56. > :43:02.we heard a massive bang behind us and three men were crying and

:43:03. > :43:09.instinctively we just ran with the crowd and heat in some of the local

:43:10. > :43:17.shops and they were trying to throw the shutters down and the police ran

:43:18. > :43:22.towards Las Ramblas. Then I think at first everyone was just praying it

:43:23. > :43:26.was a road accident. So we had walked back up to the main road to

:43:27. > :43:34.see if everything was OK. Everything was safe at the time. The police

:43:35. > :43:41.were taking up the area and telling us that we need to go away. And then

:43:42. > :43:49.as we did, we could hear people shouting that shots had been fired,

:43:50. > :43:56.so everybody rants toward -- ran toward a cafe or a shop. People were

:43:57. > :43:59.diving under the shutters. A clearly terrifying experience for you. How

:44:00. > :44:07.long did you then have to take refuge? We were in there for about

:44:08. > :44:12.two hours. The locals, I would say, the emergency services and the

:44:13. > :44:18.locals - it has been wonderful. Everyone has stuck together. They

:44:19. > :44:24.let us charge phones so we could call family. They gave us drinks.

:44:25. > :44:30.People were offering to give lifts home and taxis were offering to give

:44:31. > :44:35.less to tourists. We were terrified because we heard banging on the

:44:36. > :44:39.shutters, voices saying that it was the police and it was just

:44:40. > :44:45.terrifying because everyone in the cafe just froze because we had no

:44:46. > :44:49.idea if it was the police. And it took ages and a lot of courage

:44:50. > :44:54.before finally the cafe owner slowly opened the gates and it was the

:44:55. > :45:05.police who told us it was safe to leave the cafe. Jessica, are you OK?

:45:06. > :45:08.Yes, yes. Absolutely heartbroken. Yes, we've been hearing from a

:45:09. > :45:12.number of eyewitnesses this morning. That was one of those who witnessed

:45:13. > :45:14.the events. Emergency services on the scene within minutes as we have

:45:15. > :45:23.heard. We are joined now by a security

:45:24. > :45:30.specialist. You are right on the street where this happens, Las

:45:31. > :45:36.Ramblas, and we can see quite a few people behind you but what is

:45:37. > :45:39.emerging is the scale of attacks being anticipated by Spanish police.

:45:40. > :45:43.Give us a sense of what they are dealing with. Certainly the Spanish

:45:44. > :45:46.authorities have been very forthcoming in very quick to release

:45:47. > :45:51.information and intelligence, which is essential in the wake of such

:45:52. > :45:56.horrific events, to give reassurance to the general public, but also to

:45:57. > :45:58.tourists. As you can see behind me on Las Ramblas, they need

:45:59. > :46:02.reassurance that they have the situation under control but what

:46:03. > :46:06.seems to be becoming more and more apparent is that they have been his

:46:07. > :46:11.dormant cells, intelligence agencies telling us they were to some degree

:46:12. > :46:14.under surveillance and they have now come out of hibernation and have

:46:15. > :46:18.carried out these attacks and what we will be waiting for is to see

:46:19. > :46:22.what kind of join up there is between these various groups, if any

:46:23. > :46:26.at all, or whether they were working in isolation. We can hopefully show

:46:27. > :46:32.our view is that pictures coming from Cambrils, which is around 68

:46:33. > :46:37.miles away, a seaside town around 68 miles away from where you are, where

:46:38. > :46:42.they are removing a vehicle, we assume it is the vehicle which was

:46:43. > :46:46.used in another car attack, a number of pedestrians injured they are, and

:46:47. > :46:49.we know that overnight five suspected terrorists were shot dead

:46:50. > :46:53.on that occasion, and that has been directly linked to events in

:46:54. > :46:56.Barcelona. Yes, absolutely. Certainly in terms of these

:46:57. > :47:01.individuals what is most concerning is that they allegedly had bomb

:47:02. > :47:04.belts actually on them, and these are five individuals. So what we are

:47:05. > :47:08.seeing is the marauding terrace type of scenario, that those in the

:47:09. > :47:12.counterterrorism industry and those providing that service are most

:47:13. > :47:16.worried about, which is where we things similar to what we saw in

:47:17. > :47:20.London Bridge and Borough market where there are different phases in

:47:21. > :47:25.the attack cycle, starting off with a vehicle and then moving to another

:47:26. > :47:30.form of attack, whether that be IED or using knives, as we saw in

:47:31. > :47:33.London. Well, this is your area of expertise, and often in these

:47:34. > :47:38.attacks we hear information emerging about some warnings in the areas.

:47:39. > :47:43.And we are hearing some suggestions that the Spanish authorities had

:47:44. > :47:48.been warned of an escalation, the risk of some form of attack. What do

:47:49. > :47:52.you know about that? Well, a couple of things. I hear rumours that there

:47:53. > :47:56.was a plot which was foiled earlier this year in Barcelona. But also,

:47:57. > :48:01.because there is quite a bohemian culture in Barcelona, the viewers

:48:02. > :48:05.who have been here will know that it has a very liberal, bohemian, kind

:48:06. > :48:10.of hippie, if you like, culture that prevails. Which in itself also

:48:11. > :48:17.presents potential grounds for radicalisation to foment. And there

:48:18. > :48:24.is allegedly, according to some of my sources, a number of cells have

:48:25. > :48:27.come out of Barcelona from those trying to cause radicalisation. I

:48:28. > :48:30.don't think it is a massive surprise to authorities that something was

:48:31. > :48:36.going to happen. It was certainly a question of when. Thank you very

:48:37. > :48:41.much. And we will catch up with will in the next half-hour or so. Right

:48:42. > :48:43.now we are going to have a look at the weather.

:48:44. > :48:46.Here is Matt with a look at this morning's weather.

:48:47. > :48:48.He's at the Albert Dock in Liverpool.

:48:49. > :48:54.The sail area of one of these yachts is equal to three Premier League

:48:55. > :48:58.football pitches. It needs a lot of wind and we have that in the

:48:59. > :49:03.forecast today. It is a blustery day across the board, and the day of

:49:04. > :49:06.sunshine and showers. Unlike yesterday, there are probably more

:49:07. > :49:10.showers around so you will be completely hard pressed to avoid

:49:11. > :49:14.them. One or two will, but I can't guarantee any one place will stay

:49:15. > :49:18.dry. Those in Scotland have some lively downpours working their way

:49:19. > :49:21.north and east was at the moment. They will become more confined to

:49:22. > :49:25.the north-east of Scotland. Having done across the UK, one or two

:49:26. > :49:29.showers across England and Wales at present. Already the odd heavy one

:49:30. > :49:33.about. You will get off to a dry start to your Friday and heading to

:49:34. > :49:36.work dry but I can't guarantee you will stay that way as you head home.

:49:37. > :49:40.The winds getting close to gale force at times will be most

:49:41. > :49:43.noticeable in and around the coasts and some longer burst of rain in

:49:44. > :49:47.southern parts of Northern Ireland, which will quickly rattled through

:49:48. > :49:51.the Irish Sea towards western parts of Wales later. Certainly if you

:49:52. > :49:54.look at the charge through the rest of the day you will notice little

:49:55. > :49:58.blobs of blue at appearing quite widely across the UK. Showers much

:49:59. > :50:01.more widespread than they were yesterday. Northern Ireland, England

:50:02. > :50:04.and Wales are more likely to see some rumbles of with the winds

:50:05. > :50:08.especially gusty. The wettest spot the ball in parts of north-east

:50:09. > :50:12.Scotland. We could see up to 50 millimetres, two inches, of rain.

:50:13. > :50:15.That will leave a lot of surface water around and in the breeze,

:50:16. > :50:19.temperatures in the teams but we could see low 20s were some across

:50:20. > :50:24.East Anglia and the south-east. That Sun will have some strength and

:50:25. > :50:28.warmed to it. A fairly cool night in store, but was blustery winds, still

:50:29. > :50:31.a few heavy and thundery showers around. It. The temperatures from

:50:32. > :50:35.dropping too much, most places staying in double figures through

:50:36. > :50:39.the morning. Rural areas down into single figures as we start Saturday.

:50:40. > :50:44.A fairly cool start to your weekend given it is August. The wind still

:50:45. > :50:48.blustery to begin with, still easing down through the day. Effectively

:50:49. > :50:51.tomorrow, sunshine and showers again but fewer showers around. Those

:50:52. > :50:56.showers mainly in the west. More of you will spend the day if not

:50:57. > :50:59.largely dry, completely dry. Temperatures similar today, but

:51:00. > :51:03.warmer given that the winds will fall lighter. Those winds will

:51:04. > :51:07.continue into Saturday night and temperatures are likely to fall into

:51:08. > :51:12.single figures. In rural areas it will be a cool night was partly

:51:13. > :51:15.clear skies. Showers fading, a few mist and fog patches into the start

:51:16. > :51:19.of Sunday. Sunday's forecast gives us a few issues at the moment. What

:51:20. > :51:22.is happening is Hurricane Gert added the Atlantic is starting to

:51:23. > :51:25.interfere with weather patterns in the UK. The question will be how dry

:51:26. > :51:40.it says across the country. It should be a largely fine day for

:51:41. > :51:43.many, with sunny spells for the vast majority and fairly pleasant in that

:51:44. > :51:46.sunshine as well. But we will see some rain spread in from the

:51:47. > :51:50.south-west. How quickly that happens we will keep monitoring for you but

:51:51. > :51:54.stay tuned to the forecast the rest of the and throughout the weekend.

:51:55. > :51:54.We will, it looks very beautiful out there.

:51:55. > :51:57.All this summer we have been talking to some of the UK's

:51:58. > :52:01.Today, Colletta is speaking to a leader in one the UK's most

:52:02. > :52:02.important industries, financial services.

:52:03. > :52:07.They have proved very interesting. We have talked to women at the top

:52:08. > :52:08.of advertising, technology, online commerce amongst others.

:52:09. > :52:11.My guest today is a leader in one of the UK's

:52:12. > :52:18.Michelle Quest is head of tax, pensions and legal services at KPMG.

:52:19. > :52:21.That makes her the head of a department employing 3,500 people.

:52:22. > :52:27.So it is a big job, with a lot of responsibility. But you have been

:52:28. > :52:30.working in this city, and the financial services sector, for more

:52:31. > :52:34.than 20 years. How have things changed, in terms of how they look,

:52:35. > :52:39.over the last 20 years? In terms of diversity, and having more women

:52:40. > :52:43.around? I think things over the years have definitely improved.

:52:44. > :52:46.There is no doubt about it. And when I started at KPMG, I would look

:52:47. > :52:50.around me, particularly at senior levels, and see a lot of senior men

:52:51. > :52:55.and feel that sometimes I didn't quite fit in so I sometimes used to

:52:56. > :52:59.try to project a more Mail image, if you know what they mean. But I think

:53:00. > :53:03.that has changed over time. There are far more women and it feels like

:53:04. > :53:07.it is more comfortable. You can look around and see... Your role models

:53:08. > :53:11.don't have to be women, but you see people and think I can do what you

:53:12. > :53:15.can do. It feels like things have changed over time but there are

:53:16. > :53:18.still a lot to be done, I think. And how have mentors in your career,

:53:19. > :53:23.perhaps other more senior women, helped you through those 20 years? I

:53:24. > :53:26.have had senior women mentors. I have also had some good Mail

:53:27. > :53:30.mentors. They don't have to be female. Harvard has looked at this.

:53:31. > :53:34.The thing to get on in business is really to have sponsors in the

:53:35. > :53:38.business. They can be Mail or female. So the man touring has been

:53:39. > :53:41.really helpful, but actually what I think has helped me through my

:53:42. > :53:45.career as having sponsors that work close to me, know what I do, give me

:53:46. > :53:49.the right work, encourage me and motivate me. And that is what has

:53:50. > :53:54.been really important, and they have been Mail and female. And as Charlie

:53:55. > :53:57.was saying we have spoken to a lot of women over the last couple of

:53:58. > :54:02.weeks. Interestingly a lot of them felt that they had to leave and set

:54:03. > :54:06.up their own company in order to succeed in business and get to the

:54:07. > :54:10.top. I am interested in how you have managed to get to the top of KPMG,

:54:11. > :54:14.within such a big organisation, and stay within that organisation? When

:54:15. > :54:18.I started I thought that would happen. I thought I would go in,

:54:19. > :54:22.fight a bit about business and get -- find out a bit about business and

:54:23. > :54:27.get my qualification. At the work is really interesting. The client are

:54:28. > :54:32.fantastic. I get to travel, I get to use my brain, it is a fantastic job

:54:33. > :54:36.for that. And all are entrepreneurial. I get to go out and

:54:37. > :54:40.sell and partly that is because I am KPMG, but partly people are buying

:54:41. > :54:44.me as well. Even in a large organisation, to get on you have to

:54:45. > :54:48.be entrepreneurial as well. If I can ask about Brexit, the city have

:54:49. > :54:51.raised a lot of concerns with government about how things will

:54:52. > :54:54.look for the next couple of years and beyond. Do you feel that within

:54:55. > :54:59.KPMG or other financial services organisations that jobs will move

:55:00. > :55:06.out of the UK? It is a worry, we look at our organisations, KPMG, the

:55:07. > :55:09.BBC, the NHS... We employ a lot of people from the EU and there is

:55:10. > :55:14.concern that with the uncertainty people will start to go back and it

:55:15. > :55:19.is hard to get them back into the UK again. So there is undoubtedly

:55:20. > :55:22.uncertainty across a lot of business because of that. And another

:55:23. > :55:28.controversial hot potato when it comes to getting women into senior

:55:29. > :55:34.posts is quotas. Do you think it is good to have quotas that people have

:55:35. > :55:38.to stick to? Quotas is difficult, because unless your culture really

:55:39. > :55:42.says we want more senior women, I think quotas can be unhelpful or

:55:43. > :55:47.even harmful to that. But you know, all big business that we talked to,

:55:48. > :55:50.and I see it in our own business, we are desperate to get more women

:55:51. > :55:53.through and we put a lot of programmes in place to really

:55:54. > :55:59.encourage women to go through the senior ranks. And when we go out and

:56:00. > :56:02.recruit, as well, we go to our recruiters and asked them to put

:56:03. > :56:06.together a diverse list, not just across gender, but all sorts of

:56:07. > :56:10.diversity measures, so that we really are recruiting from a big

:56:11. > :56:21.pool of people. Thank you very much for joining us.

:56:22. > :59:44.Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are.

:59:45. > :00:08.Hello, this is Breakfast, with Louise Minchin and Charlie Stayt.

:00:09. > :00:11.Spanish police say they have shot dead five suspected terrorists

:00:28. > :00:29.Police are still searching for the driver who carried

:00:30. > :00:34.out the deadly attack at Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

:00:52. > :00:53.Good morning, it's Friday the 18th of August.

:00:54. > :00:55.We'll be live in Spain for the latest shortly.

:01:39. > :01:43.set foot on a boat until seven months ago and about to be barking

:01:44. > :01:48.on a 40,000 nautical mile round the world yacht race. I will be speaking

:01:49. > :01:52.to one such person in the next hour, and bringing you the forecast. A

:01:53. > :01:55.blustery day today with sunshine and showers. Details for that and the

:01:56. > :01:56.weekend in 15 minutes. Our main story is those events

:01:57. > :01:59.in Spain where overnight five suspected terrorists were shot dead

:02:00. > :02:01.by police in the coastal Police say the men -

:02:02. > :02:05.some of whom were wearing explosive belts - are linked to the attack

:02:06. > :02:09.in Barcelona yesterday afternoon. 13 people were killed

:02:10. > :02:11.there when a van was driven into crowds in a popular tourist

:02:12. > :02:16.area called Las Ramblas. It's believed 15 of those

:02:17. > :02:21.are in a critical condition. So far, two people have been

:02:22. > :02:25.arrested in connection with the attack in Barcelona,

:02:26. > :02:28.but police say they're still Spanish media are reporting another

:02:29. > :02:35.arrest this morning. The latest on the situation now

:02:36. > :02:38.from our reporter Sarah Corker. In the early hours of Friday

:02:39. > :02:42.morning, a dramatic shoot out The authorities say five suspected

:02:43. > :02:46.terrorists wearing what appeared to be suicide belts were shot

:02:47. > :02:57.dead by police. Police opened fire

:02:58. > :02:59.after the attackers drove The next thing, police arrived

:03:00. > :03:07.there, really quick. Then they started shouting

:03:08. > :03:10.at the guy and the next thing, The incident in Cambrils has been

:03:11. > :03:16.linked to the deadly attack in the heart of Barcelona

:03:17. > :03:25.just hours earlier. Hundreds of holiday-makers, locals,

:03:26. > :03:29.shoppers ran for their lives. This white van was used

:03:30. > :03:32.as a weapon to kill. For half a kilometre the vehicle

:03:33. > :03:35.ploughed into pedestrians on Spain's I saw a white van with

:04:18. > :04:23.the solidarity of the whole of Spain with Barcelona,

:04:24. > :04:25.today hit by jihadist terrorism, like other cities around

:04:26. > :04:29.the world before it. The authorities are now linking

:04:30. > :04:31.the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils with an explosion

:04:32. > :04:36.on Wednesday in the town of Alcanar. Police believe suspects at the house

:04:37. > :04:43.were preparing explosives. And, as people anxiously wait

:04:44. > :04:46.for news of loved ones, the authorities have warned

:06:19. > :06:20.The authorities also looking at things like more checks on people

:06:21. > :06:28.But the problem is these attacks require just everyday items,

:06:29. > :06:32.just a car, no guns or explosives, and with so little planning

:06:33. > :06:37.required it can be hard to spot them and stop them.

:06:38. > :06:40.New shock absorbing barriers like this one shown in a test may

:06:57. > :06:59.the terrorist, and that to some extent is all that we can do.

:07:00. > :07:01.The way we stop this from happening is by preventing people

:07:54. > :07:56.to mind, we can see how busy Las Ramblas is, not just reporters but

:07:57. > :08:00.lots of people. This morning we are getting a sense of the scale of the

:08:06. > :08:08.the court and has been lifted for the first times people have started

:08:09. > :08:12.to make their way back, as well as the reporters you have crowds moving

:08:18. > :08:21.to stay away by the police, there is a manhunt on going, they are slowly

:08:22. > :08:24.starting, probably dazed and confused, to find out where they are

:08:25. > :08:28.staying and people who live here as well. People on the market, the

:09:03. > :09:08.After that, we know the driver fled at foot. The manhunt for them is

:09:33. > :09:37.And we're hearing of a separate fan which police say they are searching

:09:38. > :09:43.for two men, no other details so far but there is a manhunt which is

:09:44. > :09:48.developing as we speak. Another fan right now is being looked for and

:14:35. > :14:37.well and stopped ten seconds later and weather had previously been

:14:38. > :14:46.thousands of people that part was cleared and you could see a van,

:14:47. > :14:48.people were screaming. I just remember a woman next to me who was

:14:49. > :14:51.hysterical, screaming, she had a young child in front of me and I

:14:52. > :14:54.could not make out the language but it was pretty obvious she was

:14:55. > :14:58.screaming because she could not find her children. Another man I spoke to

:14:59. > :15:03.next to me, a Bengali shopkeeper, told me he saw the van plough into

:15:04. > :15:07.people, going down Las Ramblas and he saw five or six people seriously

:15:08. > :15:13.injured, thought they were dead. I moved back judge yards and another

:15:14. > :15:17.100. The emergency services' response was tremendous, as it was

:15:18. > :15:21.in London Manchester. Police, ambulance, fire brigade running in

:15:22. > :15:24.the direction of danger. They had the place in lockdown, got people to

:15:25. > :15:29.safety literally within minutes. There were hundreds of police

:15:30. > :15:34.officers, armed officers, ambulance drivers, fire brigade. I stopped

:15:35. > :15:39.counting the ambulances after 30. We know now 13 people are dead and over

:15:40. > :15:42.100 injured. You say that you saw the van, you could see it was

:15:43. > :15:50.deliberately trying to run people over? I did not see it, I heard the

:15:51. > :15:53.screeching, the crashing noise, and started to run, it is when I had the

:15:54. > :15:57.opportunity to stop ten minutes later, I could see the van in the

:15:58. > :16:02.distance, we were shoved back after that. Standing at the spot. A few

:16:03. > :16:08.hundred meters away from where the van came to stop. You talk about so

:16:09. > :16:11.many people being there at the time, this is very much a tourist

:16:12. > :16:17.destination, as well as people who live in Barcelona. Yes, it is,

:16:18. > :16:22.jam-packed, they call it a tourist trap but I came along, I thought, I

:16:23. > :16:28.need to go to Las Ramblas, because it is a sea of humanity, as I say,

:16:29. > :16:31.every race, creed, religion represented, every international

:16:32. > :16:35.language, culture, it is an amazing place. That is probably why the

:16:36. > :16:39.terrorists attacked it, this is what they hate, they hate freedom of

:16:40. > :16:45.expression, music, culture, they hate the fact that global culture

:16:46. > :16:49.comes together in this one spot and that is what they want to destroy. I

:16:50. > :16:53.have to say, I'm surprised, life is very quickly moved back to

:16:54. > :16:57.normality, shopkeeper, market owners, they need to survive,

:16:58. > :17:02.tourists are back, people walking down the streets. Extremely high

:17:03. > :17:14.police presence, literally every 20 metres, armed officers. It was

:17:15. > :17:17.terrifying. I'm shaken. What I am one of the lucky ones, my thoughts

:17:18. > :17:21.are with those families who have lost their loved ones on people

:17:22. > :17:26.desperate try to find out whether they are safe or not, took me five

:17:27. > :17:29.hours to get to my hotel, something that usually would have taken only

:17:30. > :17:34.five minutes, because the city was in lockdown. The police had a

:17:35. > :17:38.priority to catch the terrorists. Five people were shot dead just

:17:39. > :17:42.outside Barcelona, I understand. Thank you very much for your time,

:17:43. > :17:51.we used a in Spain, will exchange plans? I was here for an

:17:52. > :17:55.international conference, on human rights, so I am supposed to be

:17:56. > :17:57.leaving Barcelona today to go to France, the conference is still

:17:58. > :18:02.going on but I need to check on what is happening. Then come back to

:18:03. > :18:06.Glasgow on Sunday. Thank you very much for your time.

:18:07. > :18:12.Tried to give you a sense of the various developments overnight. If

:18:13. > :18:19.we show you these live images, this is the seaside town of Cabrils, just

:18:20. > :18:22.in terms of geography, 68 miles down the coast from Barcelona, this is

:18:23. > :18:29.the scene of what happened overnight, we know that five

:18:30. > :18:33.suspected terrorists were shot dead. An hour so ago... The scene you can

:18:34. > :18:38.see, looking out to sea, cordoned off area, vehicle overturned, which

:18:39. > :18:45.we assumed was a vehicle used in an attack, on the restaurant there. We

:18:46. > :18:52.know that six civilians were hurt. It has now emerged, initially, local

:18:53. > :18:58.police were saying those who were shot dead were wearing explosive

:18:59. > :19:02.belts, but we get various pieces of information, some agencies now

:19:03. > :19:05.reporting from the Catalan regional security chief saying these bloated

:19:06. > :19:11.belts worn by the attackers were actually fake. As you can see, that

:19:12. > :19:14.is the scene. Such a juxtaposition, as we have seen in Las Ramblas,

:19:15. > :19:19.people already out on the streets, this is one of those scenes that

:19:20. > :19:23.people will feel is so familiar from Spain, this is where the second

:19:24. > :19:27.attack happened. What we are trying to do, it is an emerging story and a

:19:28. > :19:31.very wide police investigation, we are trying to work out the sequence

:19:32. > :19:37.of events. We know that there was the attack in Cabrils, there was the

:19:38. > :19:40.attack at Las Ramblas, and police in Spain are linking the attacks and

:19:41. > :19:49.also to another explosion which happened on Wednesday night, in a

:19:50. > :19:54.house, in Alcan are -- Alcanar. One person was killed and six injured.

:19:55. > :20:02.The police investigation is looking at a wider terror cell, very much a

:20:03. > :20:05.live ongoing investigation. That story dominating our news coverage.

:20:06. > :20:10.We will pause for a moment and we will look at the weather, Matt is at

:20:11. > :20:22.the Albert Dock in Liverpool. World yachts all set to head off on

:20:23. > :20:27.the clip around the world yacht race, 40,000 nautical miles around

:20:28. > :20:30.the world, and most of the crew, that is, our complete amateurs, we

:20:31. > :20:35.will be talking to one of them in the next half hour. Sunshine out

:20:36. > :20:39.here at the moment, some shower so far, and a few more to come during

:20:40. > :20:43.the day, real storm, for most of the UK, not a typical August day, it is,

:20:44. > :20:47.compared to what we have had so far this month.

:20:48. > :20:52.Sunshine and showers, blustery wind for many of you, showers will be

:20:53. > :20:56.confined to the north and east later on, where they will remain all day

:20:57. > :21:01.long, thoroughly wet day here, showers rattling across northern

:21:02. > :21:06.England, quite sharply, sunshine, when the showers come through it

:21:07. > :21:09.could be on the heavy side. Not too many showers around, that will

:21:10. > :21:13.change, if you are looking out to work with blue skies overhead, there

:21:14. > :21:16.is a greater chance of a view showers heading your way today

:21:17. > :21:23.compared with the past few days. -- heading out to work. A few burst

:21:24. > :21:26.across the south-west of England, could get close to gale force at

:21:27. > :21:31.times, later on, showers could become heavy and thundery, and

:21:32. > :21:35.Northern Ireland, longer spells of rain for a time, pushing across

:21:36. > :21:39.southern areas but there will be sunshine back quite quickly if it is

:21:40. > :21:43.wet at the moment. Every burst in southern parts of Northern Ireland,

:21:44. > :21:46.heading to western parts of Wales. Some blue in the child, that is an

:21:47. > :21:50.indication showers become more widespread than they were yesterday,

:21:51. > :21:54.cannot promise anywhere will stay completely dry, wettest of all will

:21:55. > :22:00.be the north of Scotland, where we could see 15 millimetres.

:22:01. > :22:07.Temperatures, most places in the teams. Sunwolves, could hit the low

:22:08. > :22:20.20s across parts of England and East Anglia in particular. Easing down a

:22:21. > :22:24.touch overnight, blustery, that will stop temperatures from dropping away

:22:25. > :22:28.too much, all in all, call start of the weekend, with gusty wind, and a

:22:29. > :22:32.story of sunshine and showers again tomorrow but Saturday, fewer showers

:22:33. > :22:36.around, showers most likely in western areas, more of you will

:22:37. > :22:39.spend the day if not completely dry then drive for the bulk of the day,

:22:40. > :22:43.and temperatures similar to today but will feel warm as it gets

:22:44. > :22:49.lighter. At other compensation as we go through Saturday night into

:22:50. > :22:53.Sunday, most places dry, clear skies, dry and bright with sunshine,

:22:54. > :22:56.mist and fog patches here and there, but a chance we could see some heavy

:22:57. > :23:01.rain moving from the south-west, that is all complicated by the fact

:23:02. > :23:06.we do have an ex-hurricane getting very close to our shores. As we set

:23:07. > :23:16.off from here, they will face that as well. As you can see on board,

:23:17. > :23:20.one of the arts. We will have more in the next half hour, including one

:23:21. > :23:22.of the complete novices about to set off on this big adventure. Good luck

:23:23. > :23:33.to him. The programme this morning very much

:23:34. > :23:37.dominated by what is going on in Spain over the last 24 hours, there

:23:38. > :23:42.was an attack on Las Ramblas, a tourist destination, at 5pm, last

:23:43. > :23:47.night, police in Spain still looking for the driver of that vehicle, and

:23:48. > :23:50.then, another event last night, early hours of this morning,

:23:51. > :23:56.Cambrils, five suspected terrorists shot dead. We can speak with a lady

:23:57. > :23:59.who was there with her boyfriend in Cambrils. Thank you very much for

:24:00. > :24:09.your time. What did you see? We were walking down from the pier,

:24:10. > :24:14.about 20 yards in front of us, we saw a car speeding into the station,

:24:15. > :24:19.the police car, and apart from that we did not see anything. We turned

:24:20. > :24:26.around, we saw it hopped over, and a couple lie down, and then we heard

:24:27. > :24:29.gunshots immediately. Tell us about the vehicle that you saw, a little

:24:30. > :24:39.earlier we saw a vehicle removed that had been turned over, near the

:24:40. > :24:45.seafront what can you tell us about this car? Small dark blue or black

:24:46. > :24:52.car, we did not see anybody driving it, happened very fast, we were not

:24:53. > :24:59.able to process it. It took out the police officer that we saw. Were

:25:00. > :25:04.their shots fired? Yes, shots fired immediately, as we got laid down,

:25:05. > :25:08.and they rang out for a good 20 minutes, then quite silent for a

:25:09. > :25:13.while, all we could hear was the Spanish police, or the terrorists,

:25:14. > :25:17.we could not hear either or, and then there were some more shots

:25:18. > :25:22.ringing out. So that is really quite an extended period of time, you are

:25:23. > :25:29.saying for 20 minutes you were hearing gunfire? On and off gunfire.

:25:30. > :25:31.Yes. Sounds like an extended gun battle of sorts, we understand the

:25:32. > :25:37.latest figures are that there were six civilians caught up in that

:25:38. > :25:44.attack, were you aware of people being injured? Not in the present,

:25:45. > :25:49.we knew the police officers were injured, as we saw the car driving,

:25:50. > :25:54.we were not aware of other civilians injured. We kind of just got on the

:25:55. > :25:58.boat, laid down and hope for the best, really. We could not see

:25:59. > :26:05.anything because we had to lay low and keep out of things. You are with

:26:06. > :26:10.family? I am with my partner at the moment on holiday, we stopped with

:26:11. > :26:15.his family for a week and then came down to Cambrils, camping, for a

:26:16. > :26:19.week. We have spoken with a number of eyewitnesses, it must have shaken

:26:20. > :26:23.you up, you are in a tourist resort, very popular, and then something

:26:24. > :26:34.like this happens right in front of you. We are still kind of in shock,

:26:35. > :26:36.at the moment, you just want a moment to breathe, and understand

:26:37. > :26:42.what is going on, but you don't get that moment, and then eventually,

:26:43. > :26:48.when the police came along, and shouted surrender at us, and hands

:26:49. > :26:53.up... We know it is over, we are going to be OK. Thank you for taking

:26:54. > :26:55.the time, we are glad that your partner is safe and well and you are

:26:56. > :27:01.too. We will have all the latest from Barcelona in the

:27:02. > :30:24.next half-hour or so it here on BBC breakfast.

:30:25. > :30:36.Hello, this is Breakfast with Charlie Stayt and Louise Minchin.

:30:37. > :30:39.Spanish police say they have shot dead five suspected terrorists,

:30:40. > :30:42.thought to be linked to the van attack in Barcelona which killed

:30:43. > :30:47.The suspects - who were wearing explosive belts -

:30:48. > :30:50.were killed overnight in the resort of Cambrils, after they drove

:30:51. > :30:52.a car into pedestrians, injuring seven people.

:30:53. > :31:00.Fitzroy Davies was on holiday in the resort.

:31:01. > :31:03.Some people started running past us, and then one of our friends looked

:31:04. > :31:06.down the street and he says, "Run."

:31:07. > :31:10.Then the next thing we saw this guy coming running at us.

:31:11. > :31:14.Then someone shouted, "Call the police, call the police."

:31:15. > :31:17.And then the next thing, the police were right there.

:31:18. > :31:23.And then they started shouting at the guy.

:31:24. > :31:27.And then the next thing they just shot him, they shot him and then

:31:28. > :31:32.he fell on the ground, and then he got back up and then...

:31:33. > :31:35.Like, he went towards the police, and then they shot him again

:31:36. > :31:50.This is the scene earlier this morning as authorities cleared the

:31:51. > :31:53.site in Cambrils. We understand at least seven people were injured

:31:54. > :31:55.during the police operation last night.

:31:56. > :31:57.Police are still searching for the driver who carried out

:31:58. > :32:02.the deadly attack at Las Ramblas in Barcelona yesterday.

:32:03. > :32:05.More than 80 people were injured when a van was driven into crowds

:32:06. > :32:12.The Catalonia interior minister has told Spanish media a third

:32:13. > :32:14.person has been arrested, but police say they are still

:32:15. > :32:25.Earlier we spoke to Stephanie Walton who was visiting the city

:32:26. > :32:30.We were very close and when we turned around we could see bodies

:32:31. > :32:36.everywhere on the floor, we wanted to go and help, but you have to

:32:37. > :32:42.applaud the police. They were there so quickly. Only an hour before we

:32:43. > :32:49.said, there is so many police around, why? And then as soon as it

:32:50. > :32:52.happened within seconds they were surrounding and barricading the

:32:53. > :32:57.roads and stuff, and they were ready click, but it was really close. --

:32:58. > :33:01.they were really quick. You took shelter in a cafe in you were there

:33:02. > :33:11.for a while before you felt safe enough to emerge? We went into the

:33:12. > :33:15.cafe and they put the shutters down. We heard a loud bang and all that

:33:16. > :33:22.was going through my head, I was remembering Paris and London, when

:33:23. > :33:25.the terrorist attacks happen, when they were going into bars and

:33:26. > :33:29.restaurants, I was thinking, or we're going to get shot. Everyone

:33:30. > :33:34.was rushing upstairs and hiding in the corner but because we were so

:33:35. > :33:37.close to where it happened they opened the back door and everybody

:33:38. > :33:41.escaped up the road and ran up the road that way.

:33:42. > :33:45.Clearly a terrifying situation for Stefanie and many other people.

:33:46. > :33:48.Bahman Kalbasi is a BBC journalist who is on holiday in Barcelona.

:33:49. > :33:57.You weren't there at the time but you went to the scene shortly

:33:58. > :34:00.afterwards. Yes, on the train ride into Barcelona, many people were

:34:01. > :34:10.shocked to see the news and the number is rising to 13 dead and many

:34:11. > :34:18.injured. We were trying to get as quickly as possible to Las Ramblas,

:34:19. > :34:22.and then the metro stop, I got off the train and started to look for a

:34:23. > :34:26.taxi and finally got there. It was obvious that the area was completely

:34:27. > :34:33.cordoned off and so me people were stranded inside in the shops and

:34:34. > :34:36.restaurants -- so many people. Police were going to the process of

:34:37. > :34:40.identifying them and making sure they had nothing to do with the

:34:41. > :34:47.events and the attack and then letting them out in orderly fashion.

:34:48. > :34:52.In the next 4-5 hours, as we stood there, 150 metres from the place

:34:53. > :34:57.where it happened, there were lines of people being directed out of the

:34:58. > :35:06.area, many of them staying in hotels at Las Ramblas, but they could not

:35:07. > :35:09.go back to them. Some of them could not get to a bus station or train

:35:10. > :35:15.station because the police had cordoned off the entire area, and

:35:16. > :35:20.there was a feeling of shock. Residents and tourists, they

:35:21. > :35:28.probably thought Barcelona is the last place that something like this

:35:29. > :35:36.could happen. The fear was palpable. In the 30 minutes I was there, we

:35:37. > :35:41.saw people panic, rushing across the street, the boulevard north of Las

:35:42. > :35:43.Ramblas, mainly because someone said something was happening and it

:35:44. > :35:48.created fear that there was another attack. There was a stampede of

:35:49. > :35:51.people running in one direction or the other and police following with

:35:52. > :35:58.guns in their hands, trying to find why people were running. It was an

:35:59. > :36:03.atmosphere of fear, and they were worried it had not ended, and this

:36:04. > :36:09.morning it is the same. The big question is, where is the driver? He

:36:10. > :36:13.is at large, and that contributes to the situation and the feeling that

:36:14. > :36:19.this is an ongoing situation that hasn't ended and may take much

:36:20. > :36:24.longer. Absolutely. We can show people at home live pictures from

:36:25. > :36:32.Las Ramblas this morning, and what is striking, the streets are full of

:36:33. > :36:35.people returning. The day before, this week, I was there in the

:36:36. > :36:40.morning, and as you can imagine this is one of the most visited areas of

:36:41. > :36:47.the city, where the tourists come before going anywhere else. This is

:36:48. > :36:52.the lifeline of visiting Barcelona and the symbolic boulevard, and the

:36:53. > :36:57.people are returning and going back to this area, which tourists look

:36:58. > :37:05.forward to do, but nevertheless the fact the driver is out there and

:37:06. > :37:08.there were operations in the night, two hours outside of Barcelona, it

:37:09. > :37:12.gives the sense that this is an ongoing situation and it might not

:37:13. > :37:21.be wrapped up very quickly. Thanks for joining us. We will keep you

:37:22. > :37:27.up-to-date with all of the developments from Spain, of course.

:37:28. > :37:32.It's emerged that the Defence Secretary, Sir Michael Fallon,

:37:33. > :37:34.has personally apologised to the mother of a soldier killed

:37:35. > :37:37.in a lightly armoured Snatch Land Rover in Iraq.

:38:18. > :38:22.in products including pizzas, burgers and ready meals as part

:38:23. > :38:24.of the campaign to tackle childhood obesity in England.

:38:25. > :38:26.Last year, the Government asked companies to cut

:45:10. > :45:13.resources, because of the sheer size and number of suspects which they

:45:14. > :45:19.have to keep under some islands. Inevitably as we said time and time

:45:20. > :45:22.again, the perpetrators of this attack may have already been on the

:46:23. > :46:26.it is an open environment, so difficult to think of any way it

:46:27. > :46:28.could be anything other than that? Absolutely, and it was very clear in

:46:29. > :46:30.the aftermath of the attacks certainly here aren't Las Ramblas

:46:31. > :46:32.yesterday afternoon that this was directed not just at Spanish

:46:36. > :46:37.in Sousse in Tunisia, they are looking to get as wide a spread of

:47:41. > :47:43.me now. Let me get this clear, you are from Birmingham, the furthest

:47:44. > :47:48.you can get from the ocean in the UK, and you are about to do this

:47:49. > :47:55.having never sailed until seven months ago? Y?! A friend of mine

:47:56. > :47:58.took part in the last race, and I was listening to her talk about leg

:47:59. > :48:02.three across the Southern Ocean where the conditions are pretty

:48:03. > :48:06.rough and she was saying that she hated it and loved it in equal

:48:07. > :48:10.measures and it started a little sterling in my stomach and I

:48:11. > :48:14.thought, I have got to give this a go, so I signed up for the whole

:48:15. > :48:18.thing and here we are. You say the southern Ocean is the scary part of

:48:19. > :48:31.it, which bits are you most apprehensive

:48:32. > :48:35.about? It has got to be the storms, the Southern Ocean and North Pacific

:48:36. > :48:38.where the conditions are really bad. The fact that I have not failed to

:48:39. > :48:41.much, I don't know how bad it will get through it is all unknown. I'm

:48:42. > :48:44.sure I will find out soon enough! There must be other things you are

:48:45. > :48:46.looking forward to which is firing your energy to do this? To be

:48:47. > :48:49.honest, the storms as well, the whole reason for coming on this is

:48:50. > :48:51.because of hearing about those storms and the challenges of going

:48:52. > :48:54.through those, so maybe not so much going through the storms but once I

:48:55. > :48:57.have been through them and look back and say, I did that, I will be very

:48:58. > :49:03.proud of that. Are your family nervous? They have been very

:49:04. > :49:07.nervous, they have seen some YouTube videos and were not keen on me doing

:49:08. > :49:13.initially but now they are on board and excited. Best of luck, you are a

:49:14. > :49:16.braver man than me! People can follow the race online and go on

:49:17. > :49:21.Facebook and check out the Garmin team page as well. I am sure they

:49:22. > :49:24.will do, and they can come down here and meet some of the crew over the

:49:25. > :49:28.next few days. Today, lovely sunshine overhead,

:49:29. > :49:32.thank you again, by the way, Mick, lovely sunshine overhead but we have

:49:33. > :49:36.seen a few showers, that is the story for many of you throughout the

:49:37. > :49:40.day, sunshine and showers across the UK. More showers today than we

:49:41. > :49:42.thought through yesterday so a greater chance of getting wet at

:49:43. > :49:46.some point. At the moment in Scotland we have downpours moving

:49:47. > :49:50.towards the north-east which will remain wet for a good part of the

:49:51. > :49:54.day. England and Wales, enough of a breeze to push the showers through

:49:55. > :49:56.so it will not be wet for any particular length of time but more

:49:57. > :50:01.of you will see the showers even if you start the day dry with sunshine

:50:02. > :50:05.overhead I cannot guarantee it will stay that way. When the sun is out

:50:06. > :50:06.it feels quite warm, still a bit of strength to the sun beaming August

:50:07. > :50:25.but when the showers come through it is a rather cool feel for this stage

:50:26. > :50:27.in the year and we have more showers pushing to south-west England and

:50:28. > :50:30.Wales. In Northern Ireland some longer bursts of rain just starting

:50:31. > :50:32.to ease away from the south which will push into western Wales later.

:50:33. > :50:34.Sunshine and showers for the vast majority, clumps of blue appearing

:50:35. > :50:37.on the chart through the day, you will be hard pressed to completely

:50:38. > :50:39.avoid them. Some of the showers this afternoon could be heavy and

:50:40. > :50:42.thundery. North-east Scotland could see the rain topped up to around 50

:50:43. > :50:45.millimetres, two inches, through the day, which could cause surface water

:50:46. > :50:49.and it will be a cool day by and large, temperatures were most in the

:50:50. > :50:53.mid-teens, the South and east will see temperatures in the low 20s.

:50:54. > :50:57.Into this evening the wind gets a bit stronger, it will be a blustery

:50:58. > :51:01.night across the board, heavy and thundery showers, the wind will keep

:51:02. > :51:04.the temperatures from dropping too much, most places double figures

:51:05. > :51:09.into Saturday morning, one or two spots in the countryside into single

:51:10. > :51:14.digits. But for the weekend, for August, a rather cool start of the

:51:15. > :51:20.weekend, blustery wind, the showers, though, tomorrow not so abundant,

:51:21. > :51:23.mainly across the western half, central and eastern areas will

:51:24. > :51:28.mostly be dry and sunny and most of you will spend the bulk of the day

:51:29. > :51:33.dry. Temperatures feeling a little bit warmer than today. Once we lose

:51:34. > :51:37.the sunshine with lighter wind into Sunday, a cool, fresh start Sunday,

:51:38. > :51:42.the focused on Sunday causing a few problems at the moment, it looks

:51:43. > :51:46.like most places. Dry and bright, many in the north and east will stay

:51:47. > :51:50.dry, a chance of rain pushing into the south-west, that is linked into

:51:51. > :51:54.an ex-hurricane in the North Atlantic at the moment, and that I

:51:55. > :51:58.think will be the first challenge that some of the sailors will face

:51:59. > :52:01.as they head out into the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday. So, best of luck to

:52:02. > :52:17.them, don't forget can come down through today

:52:18. > :52:20.and hopefully we will catch up with some of them later in the year.

:52:21. > :52:23.But from me, down at the Albert Dock in Liverpool, have a lovely day. It

:52:24. > :52:25.looks lovely, it is almost like you had it planned with the light breeze

:52:26. > :52:28.fluttering flags there. I think they will see something more

:52:29. > :52:31.than a light breeze in the coming days!

:52:32. > :52:34.Now, music in restaurants - is it a stylish accompaniment

:52:35. > :52:36.to your meal, or does the volume put you off your food?

:52:37. > :52:38.According to critics at the Good Food Guide,

:52:39. > :52:40.a growing number of establishments are angering customers

:53:06. > :53:08.This is all right, it's quite chilling and just

:53:09. > :53:14.But sometimes it can be a bit too loud in some restaurants,

:53:26. > :53:29.It drowns out talking to the kids and we can chill out a little bit

:53:30. > :53:32.I just think it's kind of the atmosphere we try

:53:45. > :53:47.We do get some people getting a bit grumpy about how loud the music is.

:53:48. > :53:50.We try and cater for everybody, but obviously everybody's got

:53:51. > :53:52.a different taste in music, everybody has different

:53:53. > :53:55.Maybe we should do something on TripAdvisor where it's

:53:56. > :54:10.Not a bad idea, really, and that is the point, everyone has a different

:54:11. > :54:12.point of view. Here with us now is

:54:13. > :54:21.Rochelle Venables, editor Do you love or hate music, or does

:54:22. > :54:24.it depend? It does depend, but at the Waitrose Good Food Guide we

:54:25. > :54:27.accept feedback from thousands of diners every year and we have

:54:28. > :54:31.noticed in the last couple of years that people have said their

:54:32. > :54:35.experience has perhaps been undermined by music and acoustics in

:54:36. > :54:40.a restaurant, there are two Bronx to this. So what do you do? You are in

:54:41. > :54:42.a restaurant and it is bothering you, a bit loud, do people complain?

:54:43. > :54:56.How do you do that nicely? What are they supposed to do because

:54:57. > :54:59.other people might be happy with it. I would always say if you are not

:55:00. > :55:02.comfortable in a restaurant either because of music or because you are

:55:03. > :55:04.not happy with the table you have, always say something because they

:55:05. > :55:07.are interested in your comfort and will do what they can to rectify it.

:55:08. > :55:10.But there might well say, this is the volume we always have it at and

:55:11. > :55:14.most people like it, and you are left saying, well, I don't. It is

:55:15. > :55:17.awkward? It is awkward, and the great British public is not known

:55:18. > :55:20.for complaining in the moment but certainly we have people who write

:55:21. > :55:24.to us saying, the food is exquisite, there is so much effort that has

:55:25. > :55:27.gone into it but we cannot go back because we cannot have a

:55:28. > :55:30.conversation across the table. I sometimes get the feeling, and I

:55:31. > :55:34.might be wrong, that the music is not for the people eating there but

:55:35. > :55:36.the people working there? I think there is an element of habituation,

:55:37. > :55:51.if you work in an environment you get

:55:52. > :55:53.used to the sound bubbles, and music is stimulated, there is a school of

:55:54. > :55:56.thought that makes people think having music on in the background

:55:57. > :55:58.makes you eat more quickly which could work in the restaurant's

:55:59. > :56:00.favour. Presumably there is a lot restaurant could do to make the

:56:01. > :56:02.ambience, generally, the sound issue, because something could be

:56:03. > :56:04.quite loud but not in basis if it has a good sound system, for

:56:05. > :56:09.example, the acoustics generally are thought about? That is true, the

:56:10. > :56:14.modern ascetic in restaurant is lots of hard surfaces, no tablecloths or

:56:15. > :56:17.drapes in a lot of restaurants, those materials absorb sound is so

:56:18. > :56:22.passion at the moment in restaurant decor is not helping big issue. Do

:56:23. > :56:32.you routinely ask for music to be turned down if it is too loud for

:56:33. > :56:34.you or not? I don't because in my job I am just absorbing the

:56:35. > :56:37.experience of the everyday diner. Some people would say that without

:56:38. > :56:41.music there is no atmosphere in some places. What we don't want is hushed

:56:42. > :56:46.temples of gastronomy, we are beyond that. We look at restaurant across

:56:47. > :56:52.the range from burgers, pizza, cafes and pubs, so you have to get each

:56:53. > :56:56.experience for what it is and find the appropriate soundtrack. Tables

:56:57. > :57:02.too close together. Charlie's bugbear!

:57:03. > :57:07.It is, because sometimes they are literally right next to each other

:57:08. > :57:11.and that becomes a sound issue. Some people like ear wigging! I count

:57:12. > :57:14.myself amongst those people! There is extraordinary financial pressure

:57:15. > :57:19.on restaurants to get as many diners in as possible, we are very

:57:20. > :57:22.sympathetic to that as well. The executive chef said maybe we should

:57:23. > :57:26.have a tick box where you can great music, but that be a good idea from

:57:27. > :57:31.your point of view? It would be a food idea but in many ways that is

:57:32. > :57:35.the service we provide for diners to say whether they enjoyed certain

:58:15. > :58:19.Over six weeks, with access to remarkable training

:58:20. > :58:26.the candidates will face a series of gruelling tests, using standards

:58:27. > :58:34.Being sat in a chair where astronauts have actually sat

:58:35. > :58:47.We keep raising the bar and see who can keep getting over it.

:58:48. > :58:54.That's what astronaut selection is all about.

:58:55. > :58:59.And here with us now are two of the recruits,

:59:00. > :59:07.Good morning to you both, thank you so much for joining us. First of

:59:08. > :59:13.all, Jackie, you wanted to be an astronaut from when you were tiny? I

:59:14. > :59:18.have always wanted to be an astronaut, you look into the sky, it

:59:19. > :59:23.is filled with stars, I'll was wanted to be an explorer, adventure,

:59:24. > :59:27.and Lara Croft was my role model when I was younger and I always have

:59:28. > :59:31.that exploration inside of me, and what better place to explore them

:59:32. > :59:38.space. That is what you wanted to take part? Yes. What is your day

:59:39. > :59:47.job, a Cosmo chemist? I am doing my Ph.D. In Bristol, and now I look at

:59:48. > :59:57.rocks in space rather than Earth. So this is a logical extension to go up

:59:58. > :00:00.there? Yes, I suppose it is. What was the most challenging thing you

:00:01. > :00:05.had to go through in terms of the challenges? The most challenging for

:00:06. > :00:10.everyone was walking into a room and not knowing what to expect. We did

:00:11. > :00:16.not know what we were going to be tested on, it could be mental,

:00:17. > :00:22.physical, psychological, but you just had to go with it. What did you

:00:23. > :00:28.find the most challenging? I plan my work and experiments as a Ph.D.

:00:29. > :00:31.Student, but walking into the room with a few minutes notice, to

:00:32. > :00:38.perform a task which is unthinkable, that was difficult. That was a real

:00:39. > :00:41.test. To what extent are they testing how mentally prepared you

:00:42. > :00:47.might be or suitable for spending a long time in a small space with a

:00:48. > :00:53.lot of people? How do they test you? One of the people was a psychologist

:00:54. > :00:56.who selects astronauts for the European Space Agency and they were

:00:57. > :00:59.looking at how we responded to the tests and how we responded to

:01:00. > :01:04.failure and success and how quickly we learn, so it is about what you

:01:05. > :01:14.can do as well as what you can learn. Looking at micro-expressions?

:01:15. > :01:20.Sam is terrifying. -- sounds terrifying. Yes, and she is looking

:01:21. > :01:25.at you, the more you try to act normal, the worse it is. You are not

:01:26. > :01:35.getting a job at the end of this process, but what it is, it will

:01:36. > :01:40.give you a verification that you would be suitable for the real thing

:01:41. > :01:42.if you applied? Yes, the programme is about astronaut selection and

:01:43. > :01:47.there is a winner at the end and people are asked to leave throughout

:01:48. > :01:53.the programme, but it gave us a real-life idea what it is like to go

:01:54. > :01:57.to the selection process. I know you both prepared. You learned to swim?

:01:58. > :02:02.The whole time through the application I thought, this is

:02:03. > :02:05.amazing, but I'm not going to get picked, let's be realistic. I'm just

:02:06. > :02:11.a girl from Liverpool, nothing special. Then we were told a few

:02:12. > :02:15.weeks before, you are through, we start filming in two weeks, and I

:02:16. > :02:23.was like, I can't swim, I have got to learn. I tried my best and we

:02:24. > :02:28.will see how we get on. That is a requirement? I was quite naive,

:02:29. > :02:34.thinking there is no water in space, I'll be fine, but much astronaut

:02:35. > :02:39.training is done under underwater survival, and a lot of training is

:02:40. > :02:42.underwater because of the feeling of weightlessness that you would get in

:02:43. > :02:49.space, and that is as close as we can get on earth. You had total

:02:50. > :02:54.immersion? Yes. One of the other things you had to deal with is

:02:55. > :02:59.working in small spaces and being isolated with very few people, how

:03:00. > :03:01.did they test you for that? Throughout the whole programme, the

:03:02. > :03:07.candidates were together, all day, doing tests, and it was throughout

:03:08. > :03:12.the process, we were in confined spaces with people all the time but

:03:13. > :03:15.also we were put in confined spaces during the tests and expected to

:03:16. > :03:21.perform under pressure, in dark and cost of road environments. I have

:03:22. > :03:29.asked this question of real astronauts, do you believe in other

:03:30. > :03:36.life other than us? LAUGHTER You are laughing, but you are going

:03:37. > :03:43.to space. We spoke to one of the astronauts, I remember asking, do

:03:44. > :03:48.you ever look out of the little window and say, maybe there is,

:03:49. > :03:53.maybe there isn't. Even in amongst the scientific training. I would say

:03:54. > :03:58.most definitely, but there will be some form of life, whether it be

:03:59. > :04:04.bacteria or like ourselves, but we are properly too far away to ever

:04:05. > :04:08.make contact. Space is very big and mostly empty can of which is a real

:04:09. > :04:14.shame. I'm sure there is lots of life out there, galaxies brimming

:04:15. > :04:17.with it, but I think intelligent life is very rare and probably

:04:18. > :04:25.far-away so it will be difficult to communicate. That is what you're

:04:26. > :04:29.looking for when you are your Ph.D.? I'm looking at the timing of events

:04:30. > :04:35.in the early services to but there are meteorites which contain organic

:04:36. > :04:41.compounds -- in the early solar systems. There is only the

:04:42. > :04:49.ingredients for life as we know it. Good luck. -- there is certainly.

:04:50. > :04:51.Good luck. 'Astronauts: Do You Have

:04:52. > :04:53.What It Takes?' starts In a moment author Philippa

:04:54. > :04:57.Gregory will be here. But first a last, brief

:04:58. > :04:59.look at the headlines A mostly dry start but showers

:05:00. > :06:37.developing later - There'll be sunny spells too

:06:38. > :06:41.but the wind will make it feel generally cool with a top

:06:42. > :06:44.temperature of 21 degrees celsius. I'll be back with the lunchtime

:06:45. > :06:48.news at 130pm - I hope Time now to hand you back

:06:49. > :06:52.to Louise and Charlie. She's described her novels

:06:53. > :06:54.as a "gateway drug", hooking her readers into a serious

:06:55. > :06:57.study of history - and when it comes to describing the power,

:06:58. > :06:59.intrigue of politics of the Tudor court, Philippa Gregory

:07:00. > :07:01.is perhaps unequalled. Her latest book looks at the tragic

:07:02. > :07:04.lives of Lady Jane Grey - who ruled Britain for just nine days

:07:05. > :07:07.before being executed - and her sisters, who defy Elizabeth

:07:08. > :07:20.the first and marry for love. you have written so many, this will

:07:21. > :07:24.be the last one about the Tudors. Yes, as far as I know, but there is

:07:25. > :07:29.a wasted chance of finding someone who is completely irresistible, but

:07:30. > :07:36.I want to move on to a more modern family story set in West Sussex in

:07:37. > :07:42.1640 -- there is always a chance. This is about 17-year-old Lady Jane

:07:43. > :07:49.Grey who was Queen for just nine days. She is regarded as a martyr in

:07:50. > :07:55.English history, and a victim, of Mary the first, who is known as

:07:56. > :08:00.bloody Mary, because of her persecution of Protestants, but I

:08:01. > :08:03.wanted to write about a realistic goal, and her sisters were important

:08:04. > :08:11.to me as I was writing the novel. -- realistic girl. One of the images

:08:12. > :08:14.that we have of Jane is of this won, a very famous painting in the

:08:15. > :08:20.National portrait Gallery of her being beheaded -- is of this victim.

:08:21. > :08:23.But it was by her choice, she could have reverted to Roman Catholicism

:08:24. > :08:28.and she could have saved her life but she chose not to. We have to

:08:29. > :08:33.see, through the romantic gloss of history, a woman making a very

:08:34. > :08:37.dangerous but very determined choice because she believed in her

:08:38. > :08:42.spiritual life. Is there a point when you are researching these

:08:43. > :08:46.books, talking about the history and you presumably look at the dates and

:08:47. > :08:50.what people have documented previously, is there a point when

:08:51. > :08:57.you start to get a real sense of character? Which is when the story

:08:58. > :09:01.begins? Almost exactly that, it is like when you meet somebody, they

:09:02. > :09:06.tell you about themselves and you way that up and you look at them and

:09:07. > :09:11.what they do, new look at their behaviour, and then you go, this

:09:12. > :09:18.person is this sort of person -- you look. In the case of Jane Grey, what

:09:19. > :09:21.we have is a martyr, a victim of religious persecution, but what I'm

:09:22. > :09:29.seeing is someone who is a real actor in her own life stop give us a

:09:30. > :09:38.sense of how much research you do and how you get all of this will

:09:39. > :09:44.stop people have been interested in the Tudors for a long time, and so

:09:45. > :09:46.they come up with a raft of Victorian beliefs about what women

:09:47. > :09:51.are capable of and what they should be like. In a sense, when you read

:09:52. > :09:56.Victorian history you read it two ways at once, as a very good

:09:57. > :10:02.analysis of the original documents but also as the historian 's

:10:03. > :10:05.prejudices, so I'm always doing two reads at the same time and the

:10:06. > :10:11.prejudices have come to the modern day. Modern historians often repeat

:10:12. > :10:15.the same aspects which is why you get these very stereotyped views of

:10:16. > :10:21.winning because the original historians had very stereotyped

:10:22. > :10:28.views of women. Do you hanker for writing a contemporary novel ever? I

:10:29. > :10:32.have written contemporary novels, and I think I love them, and I start

:10:33. > :10:37.then sometimes thinking this is going to be great, and I wrote one

:10:38. > :10:45.and I had a heroin and she looked out of the window and there was a

:10:46. > :10:50.caravan in her garden -- heroine. But then I realise the woman was a

:10:51. > :10:53.survivor of the early suffragette campaign, and then I thought, no,

:10:54. > :11:00.you're doing it again, you are back in history. I just have a historical

:11:01. > :11:05.frame of mind so I'm always interested in where people came from

:11:06. > :11:08.and where their families came from. What the building was before it is

:11:09. > :11:23.whatever it is, so that is just how I think. Absolutely fascinating. So

:11:24. > :11:26.what about the Stuarts? I was very interested in the witchcraft trials

:11:27. > :11:31.which are very dominant in England at this time, which are very clear

:11:32. > :11:36.persecution of women at a time of great unrest and anxiety. I started

:11:37. > :11:43.doing this research thinking I want to write something about that then I

:11:44. > :11:49.thought, it will be in West Sussex in 1640, and then I went, I wonder

:11:50. > :11:52.what Charles the first is doing at this day, and then he was imprisoned

:11:53. > :11:58.the Isle of Wight. And then I thought yet again we are inclining

:11:59. > :12:03.to very accurate history, but that is where my imagination comes. Have

:12:04. > :12:07.you done that thing with your own family, do you know your family

:12:08. > :12:11.history? I have a wonderful cousin who has done it for me, absolutely

:12:12. > :12:17.brilliant. She writes essays on it and we do have a well researched

:12:18. > :12:23.family tree, including a completely fictional Victorian one which was

:12:24. > :12:29.done by a Victorian geologist which takes us back to royalty. If you are

:12:30. > :12:35.a Victorian genealogist that is all you want. You have had novels

:12:36. > :12:38.adapted for film and television. The research is so intricate in yours,

:12:39. > :12:44.what is it like seeing it on television? TV and film are fast

:12:45. > :12:48.forward in so many ways. Such a different artform, if you went to a

:12:49. > :12:53.ballet, you wouldn't say, how have they handled the story, and so you

:12:54. > :13:01.have to say, there is another writer working on this, sometimes a team of

:13:02. > :13:06.writers, and a director on The White Queen, so this is a version, not my

:13:07. > :13:08.version, but another version. Lovely to see this morning. Thanks for

:13:09. > :13:11.joining us. Philippa's book is

:13:12. > :13:13.called The Last Tudor. You can keep up with all the latest

:13:14. > :13:20.on the Barcelona attack Ben and Tina will be

:13:21. > :13:25.here tomorrow from 6am.
