:01:06. > :01:09.Concerns were raised over the working practices
:01:10. > :01:12.of these midwives at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital
:01:13. > :01:18.A little earlier I asked our reporter Mike Wilkins
:01:19. > :01:22.when the next meeting is likely to take place.
:01:23. > :01:31.We were led to believe that we would have a result

:01:36. > :01:38.and Antonia Manousaki have been adjourned for five months.
:01:39. > :01:40.And the hearing's due to resume on 17th July when the defence
:01:41. > :01:43.will have two weeks to put forward its case.
:01:44. > :01:45.And remind us of some of the key revelations
:01:46. > :01:50.Well, the nursing watchdog, the NMC, claims that the death of the baby

:02:00. > :02:02.The panel have heard that the midwives would administer
:02:03. > :02:05.drugs without speaking to a consultant and make

:02:09. > :02:11.And I'm hearing some of the midwives are trying

:02:29. > :02:32.Until the hearing resumes in July the two midwives and a third,
:02:33. > :02:37.Antonia Manousaki, can continue to work without restriction.
:02:38. > :02:41.They admit some charges and deny others.
:02:42. > :02:44.A further two weeks has also been set aside in September.
:02:45. > :02:47.So for all involved, particularly the bereaved parents,
:02:48. > :02:51.the wait to find out the truth goes on.
:02:52. > :02:53.High end office developments, improvements to retail space,
:02:54. > :02:58.more support to the tourism industry and even world heritage recognition.
:02:59. > :03:01.They are just some of the recommendations being put
:03:02. > :03:04.forward in three major strategies published today that
:03:05. > :03:09.will form the basis of the Alderney Land Use Plan.
:03:10. > :03:17.More support is needed for small retailers,

:03:25. > :03:30.It has also advised new, high-end office accommodation

:04:01. > :04:08.It documents all the work needed and it has taken some time to do,
:04:09. > :04:12.and the report bears witness to that and local people have
:04:13. > :04:19.The authors of the Land Use Plan, Arup, have also suggested that
:04:20. > :04:23.Alderney has the necessary credentials to apply for UNESCO
:04:24. > :04:25.World Heritage status, which has been welcomed
:04:26. > :04:35.It's a very good idea but I'm not sure it would succeed.
:04:36. > :04:45.A few years ago we discussed it becoming a UNESCO site.
:04:46. > :04:57.After a lot of work the conclusion was the only thing considered
:04:58. > :04:59.by most external people was what could make
:05:00. > :05:03.But will the economic, environment and heritage
:05:04. > :05:08.It's open for public feedback for the next month before the states
:05:09. > :05:19.Jersey Farmers are trialling new fertilising methods
:05:20. > :05:24.It's after high levels of nitrates, which exceeded the legal limit,
:05:25. > :05:27.were found in the island's water supply.
:05:28. > :05:30.Now it's hoped the new machinery will reduce nitrates by 20%.
:05:31. > :05:37.They're the traditional countryside custodians but now they are taking
:05:38. > :05:42.on new technologies to reduce the amount of fertiliser they use.
:05:43. > :05:44.Rather than spraying the whole field with chemicals,
:05:45. > :05:48.measured fertiliser pellets are planted with the crops.
:05:49. > :05:51.It's hoped this will reduce the amount of nitrates that leak
:05:52. > :05:53.into the island's water supply, which has been higher
:05:54. > :06:01.The corners of the field and the internal headlands make up
:06:02. > :06:04.about 10% of the field so that's an automatic 10% reduction straight
:06:05. > :06:07.away where the crops aren't taking it up,
:06:08. > :06:10.so that should help in the leaching of the nitrates into water.
:06:11. > :06:13.But also in rows because we're putting it very near to the potato,
:06:14. > :06:16.we're reducing by about 8% in the rows as well.
:06:17. > :06:18.So we're looking at between a 15-20% reduction.
:06:19. > :06:22.This reduction could help the island's sea lettuce blooming
:06:23. > :06:25.on our shoreline as it's caused by the high concentration
:06:26. > :06:31.What we see here in this field today is physical evidence
:06:32. > :06:36.This is machinery allowing us to put less nitrates
:06:37. > :06:43.Although it's a move forward, improvements won't happen overnight.
:06:44. > :06:46.Nitrates in drinking water has been an issue on the island for over 20
:06:47. > :06:50.years and that's all been related to the volume of nitrates which have
:06:51. > :06:52.been going on the land and this is a significant,
:06:53. > :06:54.tangible step in the right direction.
:06:55. > :06:56.Not all farmers will follow this direction, but they will have
:06:57. > :07:00.to adopt modern farming methods to look after the island's land
:07:01. > :07:11.Local football now and there's renewed hope that the women's
:07:12. > :07:15.Guernsey originally pulled out of the game against rivals Jersey
:07:16. > :07:18.because they couldn't convince enough players to register
:07:19. > :07:21.directly with the island's Football Association.
:07:22. > :07:24.Now the Guernsey FA will re-visit that decision to cancel the fixture,
:07:25. > :07:27.saying they've found a possible solution.
:07:28. > :07:30.Our sports editor Tim Pryor joined me earlier and I asked him
:07:31. > :07:46.It is more likely than it was 24 hours ago. But we should point out
:07:47. > :07:50.as things stand at the moment the game is still off, the Muratti for
:07:51. > :07:57.women will not be happening. It comes down to this dispute over
:07:58. > :08:00.player eligibility. Remind us of the background of Guernsey football.
:08:01. > :08:04.Guernsey FA have gone to the players and said we want you to register
:08:05. > :08:09.directly with us to play in the Muratti. A lot of the top Guernsey
:08:10. > :08:14.players were already registered with a side that played in Hampshire and
:08:15. > :08:18.are affiliated to the hatchet FA. They've tried to force the issue and
:08:19. > :08:25.tried to sign up with clubs in Guernsey. They thought they had, but
:08:26. > :08:29.that will not be happening. The association has said they will
:08:30. > :08:33.revisit this decision to cancel the Muratti in the first place, to have
:08:34. > :08:36.a look again, and they need the players to get on board with this
:08:37. > :08:42.idea they have come up with for that to happen. Earlier we heard from the
:08:43. > :08:47.Jersey manager who said he really wanted this Muratti to go ahead. He
:08:48. > :08:50.may get his way, but there are talks to be had behind the scenes in
:08:51. > :08:53.to be had behind the scenes in Guernsey.
:08:54. > :08:55.Guernsey's Government House has been bathed in purple light in support
:08:56. > :08:57.of international efforts to eradicate polio.
:08:58. > :09:00.The Rotary Club of Guernsey is at the forefront of the global
:09:01. > :09:02.campaign, which has designated today as Purple Pinkie Day, a chance
:09:03. > :09:05.to raise awareness and vital funds for the fight against polio.
:09:06. > :09:07.The island's Lieutenant Governor says it was only after moving
:09:08. > :09:15.to Guernsey that he discovered the extent of the work going on.
:09:16. > :09:27.It has been a focus for Rotary Guernsey to really support this and
:09:28. > :09:33.this idea of pushing the purple pinkie day has been very strong and
:09:34. > :09:37.Guernsey is almost at the front of one of these initiatives. It has
:09:38. > :09:38.been great fun turning the house slightly different shade.
:09:39. > :09:42.It's been the talk of the day especially with many heading
:09:43. > :09:46.Holly, I'm frightened to use the word beginning with F,
:09:47. > :10:00.Good question. We stay in a similar weather pattern as we have seen this
:10:01. > :10:05.past week. There is a little more breeze around, so hopefully that
:10:06. > :10:09.will clear it a bit more. There is a risk you could see some spots
:10:10. > :10:12.getting further mist and fog, especially overnight and into the
:10:13. > :10:22.morning. For many of us today seems like this were very familiar. This
:10:23. > :10:27.weekend that is the potential for further mist and fog patches,
:10:28. > :10:30.hopefully not as extensive as it has been, hopefully a bit more keen to
:10:31. > :10:37.clear with a bit more breeze around and that should lead to brighter
:10:38. > :10:41.spells. All the while it is mild. In addition we have got this high
:10:42. > :10:45.pressure in charge which is keeping things quite stagnant. We have got
:10:46. > :10:51.some week whether France trying to push in, but in general it is mainly
:10:52. > :10:54.dry. Overnight tonight we have got a risk of mist and fog forming over
:10:55. > :11:02.France and drifting its way across us. It could get quite chilly and we
:11:03. > :11:05.could see a touch of ground frost. Then there is a potential for mist
:11:06. > :11:10.and fog patches into tomorrow morning. With a bit more breeze
:11:11. > :11:15.around hopefully that will clear a bit more. If we do see some
:11:16. > :11:20.brightness, because the area is mild and moist it will feel quite nice.
:11:21. > :11:29.Temperatures get into double figures. These are the times of high
:11:30. > :11:38.water. These are the waves for the surfers. Generally choppy
:11:39. > :11:44.conditions. This is the picture out at sea, so there are potential
:11:45. > :11:50.problems with the mist and fog. It is a fairly settled look as we move
:11:51. > :11:53.through the next few days. Yes, mist and fog problems, but hopefully
:11:54. > :11:55.sunny spells will come through and it will be mild in the sunshine as
:11:56. > :12:00.well. I think you used the word quite
:12:01. > :12:05.considerably throughout that I'm afraid.
:12:06. > :12:09.That is it this Friday evening. If you missed anything, you can catch
:12:10. > :12:16.up on the iPlayer. I am back at 10:25 p.m..
:12:17. > :12:21.His reponse was expected by 6.00pm this evening.
:12:22. > :12:26.The hearing should be taking place right now.
:12:27. > :12:28.Back on the field, the Pilgrims will be keen to return
:12:29. > :12:31.to winning ways when they make the near 800-mile round
:12:32. > :12:34.Exeter City host Stevenage, while Yeovil travel to Cheltenham.
:12:35. > :12:36.In the National League, Torquay face Barrow.
:12:37. > :12:39.If you can't make the games you can tune into your local BBC radio
:12:40. > :12:44.There are no Six Nations games this weekend which is a bit of a bonus
:12:45. > :12:46.for the Exeter Chiefs with a couple of returning internationals,
:12:47. > :12:49.as they travel to Worcester, having not lost in the Premiership since
:12:50. > :12:53.When the teams met earlier in the season the Chiefs put more
:12:54. > :12:57.than 50 points past the Warriors, scoring nine tries in the process.
:12:58. > :13:00.But Worcester stunned champions Saracens last weekend and should
:13:01. > :13:12.provide a much tougher challenge at the Sixways tomorrow.
:13:13. > :13:14.We are both really fighting for something. Worcester
