:00:08. > :00:18.Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. These are Monday's headlines.

:00:19. > :00:24.Issy celebrity obsession with weight to blame for young children going on

:00:25. > :00:28.diets? Quite a number of the children that you talk to are quite

:00:29. > :00:31.unhappy about how they look and would describe themselves as fat.

:00:32. > :00:33.Charities in Jersey as being encouraged to help the unemployed

:00:34. > :00:36.And historic markings that saved lives

:00:37. > :00:38.during the Occupation are to be removed

:00:39. > :00:41.from the former Jersey College for Girls.

:00:42. > :00:48.It's always sad to see something effectively disappear, but we have

:00:49. > :00:55.to be realistic. Not everything can be saved.

:00:56. > :00:57.There's concern children as young as six in Guernsey are becoming

:00:58. > :01:00.with one local eating disorder specialist saying, in particular,

:01:01. > :01:05.it's worrying how many ten-year-old girls say they've been on diets.

:01:06. > :01:07.A recent survey revealed a third of primary school pupils

:01:08. > :01:19.and often criticised if they let things slip.

:01:20. > :01:22.But is celebrity culture making us all too obsessed

:01:23. > :01:30.And, worryingly, is it it rubbing off on our children?

:01:31. > :01:36.Even quite young children, six, seven, eight years old, quite a

:01:37. > :01:40.number of them are unhappy about how they look. They would describe

:01:41. > :01:44.themselves as fat. Ten-year-old girls in particular. Many of them or

:01:45. > :01:46.say that they have been on a diet. It's something nurses like

:01:47. > :01:48.Christine often come across. She mainly deals with children that

:01:49. > :01:51.are perhaps overweight but she says

:01:52. > :01:59.negative messages don't help. If parents can avoid saying that

:02:00. > :02:04.they are going on a diet, that is a great start. Don't give those

:02:05. > :02:06.messages out. You eat food because it is nice food, that is a much

:02:07. > :02:08.better way of approaching it. Schools like this one

:02:09. > :02:09.are doing their bit, with lessons focusing on making kids

:02:10. > :02:23.proud of their bodies. Everybody looks like the one that

:02:24. > :02:28.you love. Children are open to more things, for example the use of

:02:29. > :02:32.social media, magazines, what we see in shops, rather than taking a

:02:33. > :02:35.negative slant, we're looking at parents who have gone down the

:02:36. > :02:45.positive root of celebrating our own bodies, instead. Everybody has that

:02:46. > :02:49.when things in their bodies and they can think differently and feel

:02:50. > :02:54.differently. I always hear lots of adults saying I am on a diet.

:02:55. > :02:56.Actually it is not a diet, it is just a healthy lifestyle, it is just

:02:57. > :02:58.what your lifestyle should be. And, a lesson for us all,

:02:59. > :03:02.perhaps, to take on board. And we'll have more on that story -

:03:03. > :03:05.which has been described as a ticking time bomb for Guernsey

:03:06. > :03:09.- in our late news at 10:30pm. Charities in Jersey are being

:03:10. > :03:11.encouraged to hire people who've been unemployed

:03:12. > :03:13.for a long time, using

:03:14. > :03:15.a States Back to Work scheme. The scheme offers companies

:03:16. > :03:18.and other groups funding for training,

:03:19. > :03:20.and up to six months' salary if they take

:03:21. > :03:24.on unemployed recruits. But there's some concern it doesn't

:03:25. > :03:27.suit much of the charity sector. Sammi is learning the ropes

:03:28. > :03:33.for her new admin role the Barnardo's service

:03:34. > :03:36.based in Jersey. Previously unemployed,

:03:37. > :03:38.her salary here is being covered Without this help, the charity

:03:39. > :03:44.couldn't have afforded her. Sammi's come in and she's

:03:45. > :03:49.picked up the admin work. She's able to do the basic admin

:03:50. > :03:52.that project workers are able to work with young people

:03:53. > :03:54.on the ground so, yeah, And Sammi isn't the only

:03:55. > :03:59.one who's found work through this Back to

:04:00. > :04:00.Work scheme. The Social Security department

:04:01. > :04:02.introduced the scheme and it's so far cost

:04:03. > :04:09.just under ?600,000. It's funded roles for 150

:04:10. > :04:13.people looking for work, with about half of them

:04:14. > :04:15.getting their employment extended But, while it doesn't

:04:16. > :04:21.have exact figures, the department says

:04:22. > :04:23.there's a low take-up but it seems they've

:04:24. > :04:30.got their work cut out. The scheme doesn't work

:04:31. > :04:32.as well for charities as it does

:04:33. > :04:34.for the private sector. The charities don't always

:04:35. > :04:38.have the resources to continue employing that person,

:04:39. > :04:43.so unfortunatrely they take them for the short time that covers it

:04:44. > :04:47.and then they have to let them go. So can the States do

:04:48. > :04:49.anything to help? Obviously, some charities

:04:50. > :04:52.do continue employing people especially if they've been

:04:53. > :04:54.beneficial to the organisation, It's sad if the charity can't

:04:55. > :05:00.continue with employment they've had valuable work

:05:01. > :05:04.experience. This particular Jersey charity has

:05:05. > :05:07.had previous success with the scheme, but even they admit

:05:08. > :05:11.finances will have to be assessed before they can commit to keeping

:05:12. > :05:13.Sammi on after the six months'

:05:14. > :05:21.funding runs out. A post mortem examination is to be

:05:22. > :05:25.carried out on the body of a man recovered from the sea

:05:26. > :05:27.at Pleinmont in Guernsey. A large-scale air, land and sea

:05:28. > :05:29.search was carried out over the weekend for 50-year-old

:05:30. > :05:31.Patrick Eker A formal identification

:05:32. > :05:36.is expected later. The police are not treating

:05:37. > :05:44.the death as suspicious. In the last hour, we've learnt

:05:45. > :05:47.the Air Search and Alderney lifeboat are searching for an Alderney man

:05:48. > :05:50.who's been reported missing. Keith Jones was last seen

:05:51. > :05:54.yesterday at two o'clock. He's described as being five

:05:55. > :05:57.foot ten, slim and bald and was wearing

:05:58. > :05:59.a red and grey anorak. A disciplinary hearing has heard how

:06:00. > :06:02.an ambulance station officer in Guernsey failed to follow up

:06:03. > :06:04.a 999 call from an elderly man

:06:05. > :06:07.who was having a heart attack. when Alan Hamilton dialled 999

:06:08. > :06:14.but the call was cut off and attempts to call him

:06:15. > :06:22.back were unsuccessful. Procedures, including logging

:06:23. > :06:27.the call and dispatching the police and ambulance, were not

:06:28. > :06:28.followed through and Mr Hamilton's body

:06:29. > :06:30.was found the next day. The hearing in

:06:31. > :06:33.Southampton continues. Historic markings that warned pilots

:06:34. > :06:36.not to bomb an island hospital during the Occupation

:06:37. > :06:38.will be removed as the former Jersey College

:06:39. > :06:40.for Girls is converted into flats. It comes after a report

:06:41. > :06:44.on the island's heritage criticised for failing to preserve

:06:45. > :06:49.historic sites. Sitting next to his anti-aircraft

:06:50. > :06:56.gun - a German soldier keeps watch Churchill's pilots launched

:06:57. > :07:04.several air attacks on the islands. So red crosses -

:07:05. > :07:07.like those seen here in France - were painted on hospitals

:07:08. > :07:12.to avoid casualties. 70 years on and time has faded

:07:13. > :07:14.the markings at the former

:07:15. > :07:16.Jersey College for Girls site. It's always sad to see something

:07:17. > :07:21.effectively disappear but we have to be realistic.

:07:22. > :07:30.Not everything can be saved. The crosses are now very faint

:07:31. > :07:39.and sadly are almost invisible. Jersey College for Girls

:07:40. > :07:43.was located in this

:07:44. > :07:44.magnificent building from 1888. They were moved out by Nazi

:07:45. > :07:48.engineers in 1941 but it wasn't until 1943 that it became a hospital

:07:49. > :07:51.and the red crosses were painted A stylish new development for

:07:52. > :08:02.something for everyone. The developers believe it

:08:03. > :08:04.would essentially be illegal as the site is no longer used

:08:05. > :08:08.as a hospital, and the front of the building is in such

:08:09. > :08:11.a poor state of repair, it needs painting to

:08:12. > :08:12.preserve its structure. Yet it's not the first

:08:13. > :08:15.time questions have been raised about the re-development of historic

:08:16. > :08:18.sites on the Island. This HMV logo in St Helier was saved

:08:19. > :08:21.after a petition was signed Earlier this month,

:08:22. > :08:24.a heritage report criticised the Southampton Hotel

:08:25. > :08:26.development for only keeping

:08:27. > :08:28.the original building's fa ade. But planning bosses say change

:08:29. > :08:30.is essential Turning buildings back

:08:31. > :08:43.into preserved structures or reverting them to the way

:08:44. > :08:46.they were in 1944 would not be paying true homage to our

:08:47. > :08:50.aspirations And while there is a demand for more

:08:51. > :08:54.residential accommodation on the island,

:08:55. > :08:56.Tracey says they will always try and balance the needs of future

:08:57. > :08:58.developers Sport now and it's been announced

:08:59. > :09:04.that Guernsey and Jersey cricket teams will be heading

:09:05. > :09:08.to Johnannsburg later in the year for the World Cricket

:09:09. > :09:10.League Five tournament. The South African city was chosen

:09:11. > :09:14.over Jersey and the Netherlands Jersey Reds have climbed

:09:15. > :09:21.to fifth in the Championship They beat Rotherham Titans

:09:22. > :09:28.17-9 at St Peter. And congratulations

:09:29. > :09:29.to Guernsey's Ladies Rugby Team They ended their season in style

:09:30. > :09:37.with an 85-0 victory over Worthing. Finally football, and Jersey beat

:09:38. > :09:40.rivals Guernsey 1-0 to win the Under-18s Muratti

:09:41. > :09:43.at Springfield. Jake Prince netted a last-gasp

:09:44. > :09:48.winner for the home side. I nearly wasn't here today after fog

:09:49. > :09:56.delayed my return from holiday, a frustration many of us have had

:09:57. > :09:59.to endure in recent weeks. Lets see if it's clear

:10:00. > :10:09.skies for the week. Good evening. It will be promising

:10:10. > :10:12.this week. We have swapped the low cloud and fog for sunshine and

:10:13. > :10:18.showers. We have had some sunshine through today. That weather is

:10:19. > :10:22.clearing now. Behind it, we have cooler air. In the next few days it

:10:23. > :10:27.will be rather cool with a mixture of sunshine and showers and,

:10:28. > :10:31.throughout this week, rather breezy. This cold front just clearing, it

:10:32. > :10:35.has broken the cloud up so we have largely clear skies out there at the

:10:36. > :10:41.moment. Tomorrow, a much more promising day. Plenty of sunshine.

:10:42. > :10:45.It will still be quite breezy and still on the chilly side as well.

:10:46. > :10:49.Wednesday, we will see some spells of rain through the morning, then

:10:50. > :10:53.that system pushes out of the way and we should see some drier,

:10:54. > :10:59.brighter weather. We have a few showers out there at the moment. One

:11:00. > :11:03.or two heavy bursts at times. Fairly breezy, but clear skies over like

:11:04. > :11:08.tonight. Even with that breeze, the potential for temperatures to get

:11:09. > :11:12.down as low as five Celsius. That shows you just how cold that there

:11:13. > :11:16.is. Tomorrow, a much better day. We'll see one or two shall was

:11:17. > :11:22.initially but for the bulk of the day, sunshine. The wind will be an

:11:23. > :11:25.issue. We will see a lot of sunshine but it will feel cooler than you

:11:26. > :11:35.would think once you step outside with those high winds. Here are your

:11:36. > :11:44.times of high water... And for our surfers... Generally messy or choppy

:11:45. > :11:47.conditions. The wins will be Westerly, 4-6, gradually

:11:48. > :11:50.south-westerly as we go through tomorrow. Isolated showers through

:11:51. > :11:56.the morning I and foremost a dry day the some sunshine. Visibility mainly

:11:57. > :12:00.good. Tomorrow one of the better days of the week with cloud pushing

:12:01. > :12:04.in on Wednesday on Thursday with outbreaks of rain, continuing to

:12:05. > :12:06.breezy as we head through the week and warming up towards next weekend.

:12:07. > :12:09.I'll be back at eight with an update and then again with you local news

:12:10. > :12:19.first after the BBC National news at ten twenty five.

:12:20. > :12:23.in some of the most sensitive rural sites in the county.

:12:24. > :12:25.McDonagh failed to turn up to Plymouth Crown Court

:12:26. > :12:27.and a European Arrest Warrant has been issued to bring back

:12:28. > :12:30.the offender from the Republic of Ireland, so that justice

:12:31. > :12:35.It is now a familiar sight in our countryside.

:12:36. > :12:40.The beauty spots were fly-tippers can illegally dump rubbish

:12:41. > :12:47.But look at how much devastation one man can cause.

:12:48. > :12:53.18 separate sites across three local authorities were used

:12:54. > :12:56.by Martin McDonagh over more than a year.

:12:57. > :13:03.One victim who was ripped off by the serial fly-tipper also faced

:13:04. > :13:08.a fixed penalty notice served by the local authority

:13:09. > :13:13.I was heavily pregnant, I was moving out of my dad's flat

:13:14. > :13:16.and trying to start a new, fresh life, new home, new family

:13:17. > :13:22.I wanted everything gone, sorted and I couldn't do that.

:13:23. > :13:39.He knows how to work people to get what he wants. He can come across as

:13:40. > :13:51.the most friendliest person in the world. He knows what he is doing.

:13:52. > :13:58.In sentencing, the charge said Martin McDonagh would pester home

:13:59. > :14:04.owners who were then charged money and then he was in a habit of coming

:14:05. > :14:11.back and pestering for more money. He said his manner was persistent

:14:12. > :14:16.and threatening. Tanis Bandhari Martin McDonagh showed their regard

:14:17. > :14:21.for the customers. He showed no regard for the environment and he

:14:22. > :14:25.showed no regard for the land owners, local authorities who have

:14:26. > :14:31.had to clear up the massed. Martin McDonagh's van has been crushed and

:14:32. > :14:38.recycled. If only he had taken this approach with his work.

:14:39. > :14:41.It was a massive weekend of sport, but it's fair to say there weren't

:14:42. > :14:46.Natalie's here with good news and bad news.

:14:47. > :14:48.Shall we get the bad news out of the way?

:14:49. > :14:52.The Exeter Chiefs just failed in their bid to win the first trophy

:14:53. > :14:56.They lost 16-12 to Leicester Tigers in the final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

:14:57. > :15:00.Charlie Price watched the game in London.

:15:01. > :15:03.It was another big day for fans of the Exeter Chiefs.

:15:04. > :15:06.More than a thousand of them travelled from Devon to London

:15:07. > :15:12.We will win quite handsomely, probably by about 25 points.

:15:13. > :15:17.I think we will play really well and if we have a good squad

:15:18. > :15:21.performance, then we'll bring home the cup - brilliant.

:15:22. > :15:23.At the Twickenham stoop, a young Chiefs side was aiming

:15:24. > :15:26.to win the Anglo-Welsh Trophy for a second time and they enjoyed

:15:27. > :15:29.the first try of the match, with James Short on the end

:15:30. > :15:32.of a good passing move and his pace gave the Leicester defence no

:15:33. > :15:40.But the Tigers responded and took control of the game.

:15:41. > :15:43.Tom Brady intercepted another Exeter passing move and he scored.

:15:44. > :15:47.It was converted and another two penalties from Freddie Burns saw

:15:48. > :15:51.the Chiefs trail by 11 points at the break.

:15:52. > :15:54.No points were scored in the second half until the 77th minute,

:15:55. > :15:58.when after 39 phases of play, Sam Simmonds finally breached

:15:59. > :16:00.the Tigers' defence, but there wasn't enough time

:16:01. > :16:05.So it was defeat in the final of this competition

:16:06. > :16:19.There was also disappointment for the Plymouth Raiders

:16:20. > :16:24.as they lost in the BBL Trophy final to a slick Leicester Riders team.

:16:25. > :16:27.A 1,000-mile round trip to and from Glasgow saw

:16:28. > :16:32.The Raiders were always the underdogs and Leicester showed

:16:33. > :16:36.why they were favourites with a strong start.

:16:37. > :16:38.Of their 19 attempts in the first quarter,

:16:39. > :16:42.Plymouth only managed to score three times, meaning the writing

:16:43. > :16:46.Despite a valiant fightback by the Raiders in the second

:16:47. > :16:49.quarter, when they tried to stay in touch with their opposition,

:16:50. > :16:53.it soon became obvious that the Riders were too good

:16:54. > :16:55.and they started to run away with it.

:16:56. > :16:57.Plymouth did well to make it to the final,

:16:58. > :17:01.their first in ten years, but yesterday just wasn't their day.

:17:02. > :17:07.The Riders reigned supreme and it finished 91-58.

:17:08. > :17:10.At the end of the day, it's a make or miss sport.

:17:11. > :17:16.You miss the shots, you lose and we had, overall,

:17:17. > :17:19.four more shots than them, and we lost by 30,

:17:20. > :17:25.We're going to have to go back to the drawing board,

:17:26. > :17:28.see where we're taking our shots from and why we're missing so many

:17:29. > :17:32.shots, because that has hurt us over the last six or seven weeks.

:17:33. > :17:34.The long trip back from Glasgow was a disappointing

:17:35. > :17:44.Eight games left of the season and Plymouth Argyle maintained

:17:45. > :17:48.their automatic promotion push with a win over Morecambe

:17:49. > :17:51.It finished 1-0, which might not sound that exciting,

:17:52. > :17:55.but by all accounts it was a humdinger of a game.

:17:56. > :17:58.Graham Carey was the scorer with a superb effort.

:17:59. > :18:01.Argyle were unlucky not have have had more.

:18:02. > :18:04.Exeter City are still in the play-off zone in seventh place

:18:05. > :18:08.The Grecians took the lead just before the hour mark

:18:09. > :18:14.Luton, who are currently fifth, equalised a few minutes later.

:18:15. > :18:19.Exeter are just one point ahead of eighth-placed Blackpool.

:18:20. > :18:21.On Saturday they're against Yeovil, who also drew

:18:22. > :18:24.They were hosting Accrington Stanley who had ten men

:18:25. > :18:29.Francois Zoko scored Yeovil's equaliser.

:18:30. > :18:32.The Glovers are 17th with their opponents one place

:18:33. > :18:37.And if you're wondering where Torquay are, well,

:18:38. > :18:50.They're in action tomorrow at home to Eastleigh.

:18:51. > :18:57.Are you aware it is International Day of Happiness with that bulletin?

:18:58. > :19:08.Sorry! But didn't they do well to get there? The top two teams. There

:19:09. > :19:13.is always next year. A wooden crate may not be the first thing you think

:19:14. > :19:18.of as a work of art but left it in the hands of a graffiti artist in

:19:19. > :19:23.Exeter they have been transformed. The artists have used their skills

:19:24. > :19:30.to turn the crates into colourful and eye-catching pieces which will

:19:31. > :19:35.now be auctioned off for charity. The crates were truly,

:19:36. > :19:36.truly extraordinary. People can be as wild

:19:37. > :19:45.and as wacky as they want to be. The spare time of 22 graffiti

:19:46. > :19:49.artists combined with a donation of 22 blank crates and this

:19:50. > :19:55.is what you get. It really is extraordinary,

:19:56. > :20:01.absolutely extraordinary. I know the work of all

:20:02. > :20:06.of the artists involved because I was the one to approach

:20:07. > :20:11.them, but it was so surprising that the depth and range

:20:12. > :20:16.of results that we got. The struggle is now where to display

:20:17. > :20:19.these pieces of art. Because the idea is we are going

:20:20. > :20:27.to have an auction to make as much money as we can to give to a charity

:20:28. > :20:31.cause and that charity cause is the homeless that I see
