:00:09. > :00:10.Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. These are Wednesday's headlines.

:00:11. > :00:13.Dinosaur dental work causes a fire at Tamba Park.

:00:14. > :00:15.And hear the children's choir overcoming heartbreak

:00:16. > :00:23.and suffering to bring joy to the world.

:00:24. > :00:32.We noticed some black smoke appearing behind the greenhouse and

:00:33. > :00:33.then we have done explosion. Not a good day.

:00:34. > :00:35.And hear the children's choir overcoming heartbreak

:00:36. > :00:47.and suffering to bring joy to the world.

:00:48. > :00:57.There is not a great deal of changing weather pattern. More good

:00:58. > :01:01.weather to come. But the chance of a change the weekend.

:01:02. > :01:03.Join me for the full weather forecast shortly.

:01:04. > :01:06.Repairs to a giant model dinosaur sparked a fire at a Jersey

:01:07. > :01:10.Tamba Park in St Lawrence had to be evacuated after the fire started

:01:11. > :01:12.in a greenhouse where staff were welding teeth

:01:13. > :01:26.No-one was hurt, but it took three fire engines and nearly 20

:01:27. > :01:28.firefighters to bring the flames under control,

:01:29. > :01:32.Thick black smoke could be seen for miles, after a welder doing dino

:01:33. > :01:35.dentistry at the St Lawrence theme park sparked a big fire.

:01:36. > :01:38.Staff were doing routine maintenance on the exhibit when it caught fire.

:01:39. > :01:41.Flames soon spread to plastic on the roof, on to a car

:01:42. > :01:54.We noticed some black smoke appearing from behind the

:01:55. > :01:59.greenhouses and then there was some explosions and bounds. The smoke got

:02:00. > :02:01.a lot worse, building up into the scary. We decided to stay

:02:02. > :02:03.everywhere. but it took 19 firefighters

:02:04. > :02:07.a couple of hours to bring They say the smoke was particularly

:02:08. > :02:22.dangerous because rubber and plastic Any smoke is a bad thing, but this

:02:23. > :02:33.particular, involving plastic, is going to involved in some nasty

:02:34. > :02:34.chemicals. The firefighters limited the fire very quickly, to eliminate

:02:35. > :02:36.any risk. Roads close to the the park

:02:37. > :02:39.were closed for several hours Visitors praised the Tamba

:02:40. > :02:42.staff for their quick actions, as they cleared

:02:43. > :02:55.the play-areas and cafe. The owner was relieved there was not

:02:56. > :03:06.any more problems. We just have to move on. A good few thousands worth

:03:07. > :03:08.of equipment. Fire crews remained

:03:09. > :03:09.on site throughout The park itself has not been damaged

:03:10. > :03:14.and will open as normal tomorrow. A man has gone on trial

:03:15. > :03:17.for the indecent assault and rape 30-year-old Kevin Irving

:03:18. > :03:20.is alleged to have got into the bed of the woman

:03:21. > :03:23.and assaulted her while she thought he was someone else.

:03:24. > :03:26.Alison Moss was at the start of the four-day trial

:03:27. > :03:31.in Jersey's Royal Court. This is not the archetypal

:03:32. > :03:33.rape case of struggling and shouting to stop,

:03:34. > :03:36.the court was told by the prosecution,

:03:37. > :03:40.but it was still rape, with the traumatic consequences

:03:41. > :03:44.associated with it. On this the first day

:03:45. > :03:46.of the trial, we heard In front of the jury

:03:47. > :03:50.of six men and six women, but hidden from view

:03:51. > :03:55.from the defendent, she took them through the events which led

:03:56. > :03:57.to her reporting The woman explained

:03:58. > :03:59.how she had signed up to the dating site,

:04:00. > :04:02.Plenty Of Fish, where her profile made it clear she was not adverse

:04:03. > :04:05.to meeting for a relationship She and another man

:04:06. > :04:08.started messaging and, while on a night out

:04:09. > :04:11.with friends on July 29 last year, When they met up, Kevin Irving

:04:12. > :04:15.was also with the man. They went to a property

:04:16. > :04:17.in St Helier. The victim said she was happy

:04:18. > :04:20.to go back with the man, while Kevin Irving planned to call

:04:21. > :04:23.a taxi from the house. But in the hours following,

:04:24. > :04:25.the prosecution claims, while vulnerable, in bed

:04:26. > :04:27.and in the dark, the woman was assaulted and raped

:04:28. > :04:30.by Kevin Irving, when the other man The victim said she only

:04:31. > :04:34.realised it was someone else when there was shouting

:04:35. > :04:38.and the door opened. She left the house shocked

:04:39. > :04:41.and reported to the rape to a policeman she

:04:42. > :04:43.found on the street. Kevin Irving denies

:04:44. > :04:44.the charges and the trial Ministers have paid ?33,000

:04:45. > :04:57.for advice from a public relations firm on how to handle media interest

:04:58. > :05:00.in Jersey's care inquiry. They got a UK political consultancy

:05:01. > :05:03.company to give guidance on dealing with national and international

:05:04. > :05:05.interest in the Jersey inquiry into historic child abuse,

:05:06. > :05:12.which is due to publish its report soon.

:05:13. > :05:14.The Chief Minister wants to improve upon the way Ministers have handled

:05:15. > :05:24.such issues in the past. Following months of dispute,

:05:25. > :05:26.the States has agreed to class the streets on a Jersey trading

:05:27. > :05:29.estate as main roads. Members of the public will have

:05:30. > :05:32.to pay to park at Rue des Pres, Previously, the land

:05:33. > :05:35.was unrestricted, leading to numerous complaints about bad

:05:36. > :05:40.parking and blocked rights of way. The Minister responsible said

:05:41. > :05:45.the only solution was to class them as main roads,

:05:46. > :05:47.so they can be more tighly You are watching the BBC

:05:48. > :05:55.in the Channel Islands. Still to come on

:05:56. > :05:57.tonight's programme, the children's choir overcoming

:05:58. > :05:59.heartbreak and suffering Guernsey has secured a four-year

:06:00. > :06:14.sponsorship deal that will support its Island Games team

:06:15. > :06:17.until the 2021 Games. Today, the Chairman of the Guernsey

:06:18. > :06:20.Island Games Association signed The global insurance company has

:06:21. > :06:28.sponsored Team Guernsey since 2011. The association says funding

:06:29. > :06:47.is invaluable to island athletes. The give us mercenaries, so that

:06:48. > :06:55.every sport has been given a bursary to help develop the sport. It is not

:06:56. > :06:56.only the prospect of going to the games, it is the development of the

:06:57. > :06:58.sport. There is concern that Guernsey's

:06:59. > :07:00.Bluebell Wood is under threat Environmentalists warn that

:07:01. > :07:03.the non-native Spanish bluebell, a hybrid that produces more bulbs

:07:04. > :07:05.and seeds, is out-competing Guernsey's Environment Department

:07:06. > :07:08.is organising groups of people to remove the species,

:07:09. > :07:10.which is similar to the native bluebell, but slightly

:07:11. > :07:21.paler and more upright. A Guernsey-born singer,

:07:22. > :07:23.producer and musician has been shortlisted for a prestigious

:07:24. > :07:25.Ivor Novello music award. Mura Masa, otherwise known

:07:26. > :07:27.as Alex Crossan, has been nominated in the Best Contempory Song

:07:28. > :07:29.category for Lovesick, The Ivors, which recognise

:07:30. > :07:32.excellence in songwriting and composing, will be awarded

:07:33. > :07:45.in London next month. Orphaned children from Africa have

:07:46. > :07:48.been in Jersey to spread the message The Watoto Choir travel the world,

:07:49. > :07:54.to broaden the horizons of the young people in their care,

:07:55. > :07:56.but also inspire thousands of others who watch their performances,

:07:57. > :07:58.which they are also taking Emma Chambers went along

:07:59. > :08:05.to Le Rocquier School, You would not tell from

:08:06. > :08:23.hearing and seeing them, but all these children

:08:24. > :08:24.have experienced They are orphans from Uganda,

:08:25. > :08:29.who are now in the care of Watoto Ministries,

:08:30. > :08:31.an East African religious group who care for vulnerable

:08:32. > :08:35.young people and widows. This choir is on a

:08:36. > :08:37.once-in-a-lifetime trip Not one of sorrow, but one

:08:38. > :08:44.of hope and empowerment. They are from homes that

:08:45. > :08:46.were very violent to them. Mothers that have,

:08:47. > :08:49.literally, disowned them. Fathers who have run

:08:50. > :08:50.away from children, And for them, that is a painful

:08:51. > :08:57.thing, but thank God, they are young and can easily

:08:58. > :09:00.get past that. So, all we are trying to say is, it

:09:01. > :09:03.doesn't matter how bad things were, And it was well received

:09:04. > :09:22.by these students. I thought I was absolutely amazing.

:09:23. > :09:25.The things we take for granted, they regard as privileges, but it was

:09:26. > :09:30.great to see them enjoying themselves and fantastic to watch

:09:31. > :09:39.them. It is amazing that they have such a positive attitude to life.

:09:40. > :09:40.You can be seven years old and have the confidence to get up on stage

:09:41. > :09:43.and sing and dance. This is the second time they have

:09:44. > :09:46.been invited to the school. We are very proud of our

:09:47. > :09:48.international links and this just links in very well with that.

:09:49. > :09:51.Jersey is an island. We are part of the world and part

:09:52. > :09:54.of growing up and being educated is to understand how

:09:55. > :09:56.that world works. And for the first time, the choir

:09:57. > :09:59.is taking their message to Guernsey, where they will be

:10:00. > :10:01.performing later this week. So more Channel Islanders can see

:10:02. > :10:04.there is happiness and hope, You can see and hear more

:10:05. > :10:12.from the Watoto Choir on our Facebook page,

:10:13. > :10:14.where we have the details The weather is great

:10:15. > :10:17.for sun worshippers, but not so good for the growers,

:10:18. > :10:19.with still no rain. David, is it something

:10:20. > :10:33.to worry about? The sunshine will continue, but it

:10:34. > :10:39.could come to a named on Monday, because we have an active weather

:10:40. > :10:48.system on its way. Moreover later. Tomorrow, more fame and drying

:10:49. > :10:58.weather, with plenty of sunshine. The pressure from fearfully Harry at

:10:59. > :11:07.the moment. A band of cloud on this week on Saturday. More to the north

:11:08. > :11:14.of hours. As you can see. A fine evening, but the chilly late to

:11:15. > :11:27.come. Overnight temperatures for- five Celsius. A fine day tomorrow. A

:11:28. > :11:37.lot of sunshine most of the day. Clothes coming later on, but there

:11:38. > :11:50.will be much later on in the day. Here are the water details. Winners

:11:51. > :11:56.are going to rain? He has the forecast from Sunday to Monday. The

:11:57. > :11:59.surface much more weather system, pushing probably somewhere to others

:12:00. > :12:07.on Monday afternoon. The timing of it a bit uncertain at the moment. Oh

:12:08. > :12:18.pixel dream to come on Monday. But until then, remaining dryly. 3-D,

:12:19. > :12:21.remaining frame, Saturday, that week weather front bringing a degree of

:12:22. > :12:23.uncertainty. You are up to date with the news

:12:24. > :12:25.from the Channel Islands. I will be back at eight

:12:26. > :12:28.with an update and then again with your local news

:12:29. > :12:39.first after the BBC doing what they're expected to do.

:12:40. > :12:42.Indeed plenty to keep and eye on in the next few weeks.

:12:43. > :12:45.A round-up of other stories making the news in the South West...

:12:46. > :12:48.Detectives investigating a fire at a Grade One listed stately home

:12:49. > :12:50.near Beaminster have arrested a 68-year-old local man

:12:51. > :12:54.Parnham House suffered a significant amount of damage in the blaze.

:12:55. > :13:00.lessons after shaving his head for a cancer charity.

:13:01. > :13:02.Fifteen year old Taylor Jones, was told by Launceston College

:13:03. > :13:06.in Cornwall that his extreme hairstyle was unacceptable

:13:07. > :13:10.The college says Taylor was advised to have his hair cut to a "very

:13:11. > :13:20.A Conservative MP has called for cars in Cornwall

:13:21. > :13:23.to have the flag of St Piran on their number plates

:13:24. > :13:27.Scott Mann was speaking on the issues at a Westminster Hall

:13:28. > :13:32.Jack Nowell has become the first ever Exeter Chiefs player to be

:13:33. > :13:37.The 24-year old was today named in the 41-man squad for the summer

:13:38. > :13:40.The first the Cornishman heard of his inclusion

:13:41. > :13:43.was when the touring party was announced on television.

:13:44. > :13:54.And as Andy Birkett found out, there was quite a celebration.

:13:55. > :13:55.Jack Nowell, Exeter Chiefs and England.

:13:56. > :14:02.To be named in that is obviously a massive

:14:03. > :14:04.thing for myself and for the

:14:05. > :14:10.I'm very excited, it's any rugby players dream.

:14:11. > :14:14.Not only play into the country but a chance to go on

:14:15. > :14:17.tour with the Lions is massive and to be given a chance now is go

:14:18. > :14:21.It's a chance the popular Cornishman has

:14:22. > :14:23.Everyone around the club is naturally delighted.

:14:24. > :14:26.To have a current British Lion in your team is

:14:27. > :14:31.For it to be one of the players that has come to your

:14:32. > :14:34.academy system and have only played their Premiership rugby year at one

:14:35. > :14:39.club and becoming international here and now become a British line, it

:14:40. > :14:42.doesn't really get any better than that from the club's perspective

:14:43. > :14:46.for me as well, the fact that it's happened to such a good

:14:47. > :14:52.Despite his rapid rise from mini rugby at the Pirates through Truro

:14:53. > :14:55.College to now becoming a premiership and England regular, he

:14:56. > :15:01.To be honest, I was home this weekend,

:15:02. > :15:09.they treat me the same as

:15:10. > :15:11.and take bike rides along the green and things.

:15:12. > :15:13.Identical bid to much different, but their role

:15:14. > :15:20.It's nice to be able to share that with them.

:15:21. > :15:23.Can you just talk me through this Jack about your dream of being a

:15:24. > :15:37.You notice a shirt no? Yes I am wearing the shirt. I was given on a

:15:38. > :15:39.tour when I was younger, but I was never as I be wearing one in my

:15:40. > :15:47.career. Delete that now though. A nine-year old from Cornwall has

:15:48. > :16:01.been getting to grips with the ins Has made her own stall in the market

:16:02. > :16:11.Austin and has even divined her own marketing strategy. To run any sort

:16:12. > :16:15.of stored in your stock so there is a trip down to the local

:16:16. > :16:19.cash-and-carry, and wants you got that you need to spy on somebody

:16:20. > :16:23.sell it. When I saw them her local market. I've got Kit Kat lollies,

:16:24. > :16:31.penny sweets, sherbet and everything. She's doing this to

:16:32. > :16:39.raise money for Mary Carey which helps people with terminal misses.

:16:40. > :16:48.In his own: 01 hygiene certificate and dad Steve has sorted out her own

:16:49. > :16:54.marketing study. It was her idea. She's been copying the anti-bin

:16:55. > :16:59.doing this kind of thing since he was two really. She started this

:17:00. > :17:04.years ago with her first sticker shock and now she asked me to make

:17:05. > :17:08.this sweet shop for. The market is run by the local town council, Leben

:17:09. > :17:15.impressed by your ingenuity. This young lady, what and entrepreneur at

:17:16. > :17:19.such a young age. I take my hat off to her. Especially for the charity

:17:20. > :17:24.that she is raising money for. And even at the tender age of nine, she

:17:25. > :17:35.is already coming up with their own sales techniques. It would be

:17:36. > :17:41.quicker to serve people, these sweets equal a pound, so it would

:17:42. > :17:48.take me ages to sell these as individually but how about these ?1

:17:49. > :17:51.packs. They would love to her own shop and by the looks of it she

:17:52. > :17:58.knows exactly what to do to make it happen. A successful businesswoman

:17:59. > :18:04.in the making their I think. Lots of people start in the market don't

:18:05. > :18:09.they? A 17-year-old fisherman from Cornwall at is the subject of a

:18:10. > :18:14.documentary that has won the in International film Festival.

:18:15. > :18:29.Spotlight has gone to meet the people who made the film.

:18:30. > :18:38.A weather-beaten face, the sort of face you read about from good

:18:39. > :18:41.writers. Shot over a period of three years, this portrait of fisherman

:18:42. > :18:47.Malcolm Baker has won plaudits in Britain and America. Last month, it

:18:48. > :18:50.picked up on the ward at San Francisco's International Ocean film

:18:51. > :19:00.Festival. The idea for the film came about when Austrian Leo cataract

:19:01. > :19:06.came to work in Cornwall. I was fascinated by his life his work and

:19:07. > :19:14.I got to know him a bit better which then became me not going back to

:19:15. > :19:22.Austria so I would just like to stop and stay little bit with Malcolm

:19:23. > :19:30.which we did for seven years. But Knockin was initially reluctant to

:19:31. > :19:39.be the subject of the documentary. He won in the end. The traditional

:19:40. > :19:43.skill set Malcolm learnt are celebrated in the film. But in call

:19:44. > :19:56.centre day, there is no one to follow him when he retires. That's

:19:57. > :20:01.the downside of it, now, really. But that's life I suppose. But some

:20:02. > :20:05.skills are being passed on through the's project. These children from

:20:06. > :20:15.Austria on and exchange programme benefit from Malcolm's has a

:20:16. > :20:18.experience. It's about how people see changes for young people living

:20:19. > :20:29.here. There are so many people in the film that it is a community

:20:30. > :20:32.film. Those 25 in a string... But what was the hardest part of being

:20:33. > :20:42.in the film from Malcolm? Two trying not to square swear. The film makers

:20:43. > :20:52.are trying to arrange some local screening soon. I like his style.

:20:53. > :20:57.Now in the last hour and a half the 20 17th tool ships regatta has got

:20:58. > :21:06.underway in South Devon. The race features some of the world's largest

:21:07. > :21:11.sailing ships. This was the scene in the Torbay at the start of the first

:21:12. > :21:15.leg to Portugal. We've seen some lovely blue skies, but what are

:21:16. > :21:24.conditions like the overs. Here's the forger. The winter get that

:21:25. > :21:28.strong, but nice calm seas. That's not going to change that much, the

:21:29. > :21:33.fine weather continues. Quite a big change come the weekend I'll come to

:21:34. > :21:39.that in a second. Perhaps more cloud around them recently but we've had

:21:40. > :21:44.some lovely sunrises and sunsets. This was Dorset in the morning, some

:21:45. > :21:50.lovely flowers and courts in flower. This was the sunrise this morning in

:21:51. > :21:57.Charlestown. Glorious condition through most of us, there has been a

:21:58. > :22:00.bit of cloud floating around but it continues to be fine this evening.

:22:01. > :22:04.Overnight, there is a bit more in the way of cloud coming our way and

:22:05. > :22:07.that will drift across us by the morning. So there is a bit more

:22:08. > :22:12.cloud around tomorrow morning how much rain we will see but I think

:22:13. > :22:17.little if any and the cloud should break up with any tool either

:22:18. > :22:23.sunshine through especially in the afternoon. This area of high

:22:24. > :22:27.pressure is pretty strong and is weakening the low pressure coming

:22:28. > :22:32.from the north. By the middle of the day on Friday we do have weather

:22:33. > :22:37.systems trying to make progress. This is the one that arrives on

:22:38. > :22:40.Saturday which brings a band of cloud and returns northward. So

:22:41. > :22:43.Sunday looks like it will be a largely fine day. Quite a big change

:22:44. > :22:48.on this weather front as it comes down from the North later, overnight

:22:49. > :22:52.on Sunday night and into Monday. We leave the area of high pressure and

:22:53. > :22:59.for those that need it the could be some significant rainfall on Monday.

:23:00. > :23:04.Until then lots of fine and dry weather and relatively mild. As that

:23:05. > :23:07.weather front arrives on Sunday into Monday the cold air flights in, so

:23:08. > :23:13.make the most of the warmth that were going to see over the next few

:23:14. > :23:17.days because it does cooldown early next week. That is the weather front
