:00:00. > :00:00.And on BBC One, we now join the BBC's news teams where you are.

:00:00. > :00:00.Good evening, I'm Charlie McArdle, welcome to BBC Channel Islands.

:00:00. > :00:08.Re-writing history - claims in a national newspaper that

:00:09. > :00:11.tens of thousands of slave workers were killed and Alderney

:00:12. > :00:14.was a secret base for chemical weapons are rubbished

:00:15. > :00:22.Lack of investment means time stands still for one of Jersey's most

:00:23. > :00:40.The attorney was the first paddle steamer to come to the island, so we

:00:41. > :00:42.need to seek it is the beginning of foreign travel. For it to be taken

:00:43. > :00:45.away would be tragic. Jersey Reds hold on to the Siam Cup,

:00:46. > :00:48.but after nine winning years, new rules meant it wasn't

:00:49. > :00:55.an easy victory. And the Liberation Day tomorrow at

:00:56. > :00:57.think the weather would be fine and dry. Feeling warm. And some

:00:58. > :01:06.sunshine. Controversial claims that German

:01:07. > :01:08.occupying forces turned Alderney into a secret chemical weapons base

:01:09. > :01:12.have been criticised Two former army officers have

:01:13. > :01:19.written the Daily Mail stories, saying their research shows up

:01:20. > :01:23.to 70,000 slave workers died Richard Kemp and John Weigold also

:01:24. > :01:30.claim V1 missiles were built But, as Mike Wilkins reports,

:01:31. > :01:37.not everyone's convinced. It was the only Nazi concentration

:01:38. > :01:43.camp on British soil. It was one of four camps in Alderney

:01:44. > :01:46.to house the workers building It's not clear how many

:01:47. > :01:52.people were killed here, but they were brutally treated

:01:53. > :01:55.by the SS. In two articles in a national

:01:56. > :01:58.newspaper, two former military men claim that tens of thousands

:01:59. > :02:01.of slave workers were And they go on to suggest that

:02:02. > :02:16.Alderney could've been a base We came to the conclusion with other

:02:17. > :02:26.factors that this was way they were cited in Albany because you could

:02:27. > :02:31.construct and prepare V1s with nerve agent warheads on them which you

:02:32. > :02:35.could do in total secrecy given the eunuch circumstance of Albany. There

:02:36. > :02:39.was no possibility of discovering. But those claims are being

:02:40. > :02:46.criticised by a local historian. It's like saying I have evidence of

:02:47. > :02:52.fairies at the bottom of my garden. These V1 sides were easily

:02:53. > :02:56.identifiable from the air. These tunnels are surveyed there. You

:02:57. > :02:59.could not have got V1s there and why would they put them in there anyway?

:03:00. > :03:02.Whether or not you agree with the claims in these articles,

:03:03. > :03:04.they've prompted an Alderney politician to ask for top secret

:03:05. > :03:14."I think it would be a very opportune time "for the British

:03:15. > :03:16.government to release all remaining wartime

:03:17. > :03:18."files pertaining to Alderney, and for the German

:03:19. > :03:22.When the people of Alderney returned home at the end of the war

:03:23. > :03:26.it was to write a new chapter, and now more than 70 years on others

:03:27. > :03:30.Cannabis will be grown in Jersey for at least a year

:03:31. > :03:33.after the Health Minister decided to award a one-season licence

:03:34. > :03:39.Four varieties of the plant will be produced, to create oil for cooking

:03:40. > :03:45.The chief pharmacist has reviewed the proposed seeds to ensure

:03:46. > :03:51.The farm's location hasn't been revealed.

:03:52. > :03:54.It shows disregard for our maritime history -

:03:55. > :03:57.that's the view of a local historian on the neglect of

:03:58. > :04:03.It was built 20 years ago and cost ?250,000,

:04:04. > :04:05.but it's been plagued with problems ever since -

:04:06. > :04:08.no-one wants to take responsibility for it.

:04:09. > :04:12.The fountain has stopped, the bubbles are gone,

:04:13. > :04:15.and the clock is wrong - on both sides.

:04:16. > :04:18.But these problems are nothing new with Jersey's Steam Clock.

:04:19. > :04:22.It was surrounded by controversy when it was built, and still is.

:04:23. > :04:25.The Steam Clock was commissioned in 1996

:04:26. > :04:27.by the Waterfront Enterprise Board - that board is now known

:04:28. > :04:32.as the Jersey Development Company - but the land it sits on was sold

:04:33. > :04:37.to the Ports of Jersey in October 2015, but the Ports of Jersey say

:04:38. > :04:41.they only realised they need to maintain it six months ago.

:04:42. > :04:44.We always knew we were assuming responsibility for the land,

:04:45. > :04:47.but we weren't aware we were assuming responsibility

:04:48. > :04:50.for the repair and renovation and maintenance for the Steam Clock.

:04:51. > :04:53.That's why we've now given commitment that we will keep it

:04:54. > :04:56.secure and we will keep it safe and we will keep it tidy.

:04:57. > :04:59.As regard to what will happen to the Steam Clock in the longer

:05:00. > :05:01.term, we need to commission some expertise to find out

:05:02. > :05:05.James says advice so far suggests it s beyond economic repair.

:05:06. > :05:07.But love it or loath it, it s here to remind us

:05:08. > :05:13.of our maritime history, which some say needs to stay.

:05:14. > :05:16.It's like saying should General Don stay in the Parade or George II stay

:05:17. > :05:21.They've been put there because of their importance

:05:22. > :05:26.Here, of course with the Steam Clock, it's

:05:27. > :05:29.here because it's the harbour, this is where the Ariadne used

:05:30. > :05:35.to come in and the Ariadne herself was the first paddle steamer to come

:05:36. > :05:38.to the island, so we really have to see the Ariadne

:05:39. > :05:43.For it to be taken away would be tragic.

:05:44. > :05:46.But with no promise that it will be returned to working order,

:05:47. > :05:54.the time could be up for this landmark.

:05:55. > :05:57.You've certainly had a lot to say about this story.

:05:58. > :06:03."Stop spending money on stupid zebra crossings that aren't needed,

:06:04. > :06:07."or trips away for States members, and invest it back into the island."

:06:08. > :06:10.Meanwhile Sarah thinks the clock suits the location,

:06:11. > :06:12.but wants it fixed as it would draw attention

:06:13. > :06:19.And regular visitor Avis always looks forward to seeing the clock

:06:20. > :06:22.when they're over and wants it updated and left in the perfect

:06:23. > :06:32.And if you've got a comment to make on that story or anything else,

:06:33. > :06:36.you can get in contact with us by email or on Facebook.

:06:37. > :06:38.Rugby now, and Jersey Reds have retained the Siam Cup

:06:39. > :06:42.in what was a close result at the weekend.

:06:43. > :06:46.Guernsey Raiders lost by just two points, 20-18.

:06:47. > :06:49.While it's the ninth time in a row they've lost the Cup to Jersey,

:06:50. > :06:54.New rules were introduced last year limiting the number

:06:55. > :07:03.With fewer professionals on the home side, both teams and spectators knew

:07:04. > :07:11.Guernsey were the first on the scoreboard, with three points

:07:12. > :07:12.from this penalty from Kenny Hellier.

:07:13. > :07:15.Less than ten minutes later they looked to do

:07:16. > :07:20.Jersey then hit back with this try from Karl Haitaner.

:07:21. > :07:23.In the second half Jersey went on to score another try,

:07:24. > :07:29.Then Guernsey bounced back, securing seven points starting

:07:30. > :07:34.with this close range try from Craine.

:07:35. > :07:38.They then followed with this try to close the gap to just two points.

:07:39. > :07:41.Tensions ran high as Kenny Hellier took the conversion.

:07:42. > :07:44.He missed, depriving his side of a draw, leaving

:07:45. > :08:00.The first one in the first half, that is the three points that would

:08:01. > :08:05.have won the game. We were never going to get the cup with a draw but

:08:06. > :08:11.full credit to the fellas. We looked down and out when they got that try,

:08:12. > :08:11.we scored two of them. We are happy of that.

:08:12. > :08:14.Jersey only had three of its professionals on the pitch

:08:15. > :08:16.after last year's restrictions to limit the strength

:08:17. > :08:25.It is a great contest and think it was great for the neutral. For us to

:08:26. > :08:28.come away after the season we have had with 19 amateur players in the

:08:29. > :08:33.game like this is fantastic and I said to the lads before the game

:08:34. > :08:36.have no regrets and make the most of your memories because some of them

:08:37. > :08:38.will never be here again and they have done so I am proud of them and

:08:39. > :08:40.the youngsters who came through. With both sides happy with a close

:08:41. > :08:42.game, could this more competitive score become a regular feature

:08:43. > :08:49.in future Siam Cups? Football news now, and Guernsey have

:08:50. > :08:51.announced their squad for Saturday's Muratti final

:08:52. > :08:55.at home to Jersey. Striker Ross Allen is included

:08:56. > :09:00.in their list of 18 players. And star midfielder Jack Boyle makes

:09:01. > :09:06.the cut, despite coming off injured Jersey say they aren't revealing

:09:07. > :09:10.their squad until tomorrow. It's the 70th anniversary of

:09:11. > :09:14.the Jersey International Road Race. This was the scene

:09:15. > :09:16.in St Helier earlier. Dozens of classic cars

:09:17. > :09:18.gathered near the Cenotaph, and a special exhibition

:09:19. > :09:24.was on at the Town Hall. Tomorrow is Liberation Day

:09:25. > :09:26.in the islands, and I remember last year the heavens opened up

:09:27. > :09:28.for much of it. David, how is tomorrow looking

:09:29. > :09:42.for the celebrations? I think we will have the opposite to

:09:43. > :09:47.what we had last year. It was pretty miserable. I think liberation date

:09:48. > :09:50.this year is looking very promising. A specific forecast for that and a

:09:51. > :09:54.second. Generally tomorrow is fine and dry but more in the way of

:09:55. > :09:58.sunshine. Slightly more of a breeze developing which will knock the

:09:59. > :10:01.temperatures down a bit particularly towards the east facing coast but

:10:02. > :10:06.inland it will be pleasantly warm. Some cloud on the satellite picture

:10:07. > :10:14.but it is swirling around to the west at the moment and it is sitting

:10:15. > :10:16.there for much of tonight and tomorrow. Not much change in that

:10:17. > :10:21.pattern because this high-pressure is pretty strong. It weakens through

:10:22. > :10:25.Thursday and Wednesday. Allowing this low pressure to move towards us

:10:26. > :10:31.to Friday and the start of the weekend. We will have some patchy

:10:32. > :10:36.cloud tonight coming and going but dry. A bit chilly in place. Eight or

:10:37. > :10:39.nine the minimum. Keeping the air moving. While we soon see some

:10:40. > :10:45.sunshine tomorrow the wind increases a little bit tempering the figure is

:10:46. > :10:51.likely in terms of temperatures. 15 or possibly 16 tonight. Quite a

:10:52. > :10:57.lively breeze, so it might not be quite as one. For Liberation Day

:10:58. > :11:02.commemorations it is fine and dry. It will feel warm up the wind and

:11:03. > :11:11.some decent spells of sunshine. The UV is six or seven so take it easy.

:11:12. > :11:19.Times of high water... For the surfers boast of the beaches two or

:11:20. > :11:23.three feet. Coastal waters forecast, East north-easterly, 4-5, mainly

:11:24. > :11:29.fair. Moderately good visibility. Wednesday is another nice day.

:11:30. > :11:33.Changes start to happen at the end of the week. No real change in

:11:34. > :11:37.temperatures but a lot more close around and potentially some sorrows

:11:38. > :11:40.on Thursday and Friday. Have a good evening. -- some showers.

:11:41. > :11:42.Tomorrow is Liberation Day in the islands with the official

:11:43. > :11:50.The BBC will bring you full coverage throughout the day

:11:51. > :11:52.on BBC Radio Jersey and Guernsey with regular travel updates

:11:53. > :11:59.Online there'll be plenty of pictures and videos capturing

:12:00. > :12:10.And we'll have highlights here on BBC Channel Islands News at 6:30pm.

:12:11. > :12:14.I'll be back with an update just before 8pm and your

:12:15. > :12:24.Cornwall councillors are in talks to establish which party will lead

:12:25. > :12:26.the unitary authority for the next four years.

:12:27. > :12:28.The Conservatives replaced the Liberal Democrats as the largest

:12:29. > :12:30.group on the council after last Thursday's elections but

:12:31. > :12:37.The Royal Horticultural Society has invested ?1.2 million

:12:38. > :12:40.in a new building at the Rosemoor Garden in North Devon.

:12:41. > :12:43.It'll be used for events, including concerts and it's hoped

:12:44. > :12:51.it'll bring more visitors to the area.

:12:52. > :12:58.People living in Plymouth will have their bins emptied every other week

:12:59. > :13:04.today as the City Council and pose us all current weekly collections.

:13:05. > :13:08.Recycling will be collected one week and non-recyclable waste the next.

:13:09. > :13:14.Prince Charles was at a nature reserve near Bridport where

:13:15. > :13:16.he spent time talking to children who were learning about wildlife.

:13:17. > :13:27.The Prince and that pond the purrs. The royal visitor was just as keen

:13:28. > :13:31.as the children to find what they had fished from the water and like

:13:32. > :13:38.all good fishing trips, some exaggeration may have crept in. I

:13:39. > :13:48.caught an alligator, a big one. It was a bit small and then I captured

:13:49. > :13:54.a beetle. I found a rare nude. This nature reserve is also a working

:13:55. > :14:01.farm, farmed organically, something Prince Charles is passionate about.

:14:02. > :14:06.The animals here are grazing for us, managing the pastures, we have 280

:14:07. > :14:11.acres of woodland with steers so they are earning their keep. The

:14:12. > :14:16.wild flowers here though a great deal to the way these lines are

:14:17. > :14:19.great. Four years ago the Prince founded the Coronation Meadows

:14:20. > :14:26.Wojciech to halt the decline of wild flowers. This one is important

:14:27. > :14:31.because we take several cuts and used their seed and hate to start

:14:32. > :14:33.other Meadows, so his initiative has led to several Meadows all around

:14:34. > :14:36.the county. Now, it s been an afternoon

:14:37. > :14:39.of celebration in Plymouth as for the first time in more

:14:40. > :14:42.than a decade Thousands of Plymouth Argyle fans

:14:43. > :14:45.turned out to cheer the players on as they toured the city

:14:46. > :15:00.in an open top bus. Some people have been here all day.

:15:01. > :15:06.This is Derek Adams' second season in charge of the pilgrims and Pete

:15:07. > :15:10.has done it, in his second season, which makes up for the

:15:11. > :15:15.disappointment of last season when they lost in the play-off final but

:15:16. > :15:20.its League 1 next season and that is what the fans are here to

:15:21. > :15:27.congratulate Argyle about. These ladies are avid fans. Have you been

:15:28. > :15:36.to all the matches? Yes, 11,700 miles with Argyle. Why do you like

:15:37. > :15:43.them so much? Because I'm mad! What do you think of a day like today?

:15:44. > :15:51.Very good. The music is quite loud. It's all right. We travelled on the

:15:52. > :15:57.couch and travelled everywhere from Carlisle to Grimsby. Since August

:15:58. > :16:05.have you been waiting for a day like this yes, got up at 5am on Saturday,

:16:06. > :16:14.back here at 4am on Sunday. That's dedication. It's worth it. Who is

:16:15. > :16:21.your favourite player? Luke McCormick, it's nice for Luke. They

:16:22. > :16:29.have all done well. What you think of Derek Adams? And done a cracking

:16:30. > :16:36.job. So professional, very focused. He doesn't take his eye off the ball

:16:37. > :16:43.or the players. In two seasons and get that. He is there every time,

:16:44. > :16:51.she acknowledges the fans and looks after the star. So good to see you

:16:52. > :16:54.all. As we wait for the players, they are all thinking about League 1

:16:55. > :17:00.next season but sunlight will be good.

:17:01. > :17:05.What a great atmosphere in the centre of Plymouth and there may be

:17:06. > :17:08.more celebrations before the end of the season.

:17:09. > :17:10.Exeter City prepare for the League Two play-offs.

:17:11. > :17:13.Their opponents over two legs will be Carlisle United,

:17:14. > :17:14.coincidentally the team they played on Saturday.

:17:15. > :17:17.Despite first half goals from Reuben Reid and Jordan Moore-Taylor,

:17:18. > :17:19.Carlisle fought back to beat the Grecians 3-2 for

:17:20. > :17:23.The first leg of the play-off semifinal is in Cumbria on Sunday.

:17:24. > :17:25.Exeter Chiefs will face Premiership and European champions Saracens

:17:26. > :17:29.at Sandy Park in the play-offs a week on Saturday.

:17:30. > :17:31.Even a league record eighth consecutive bonus point win

:17:32. > :17:34.for the Chiefs was not enough to grab top spot at the end

:17:35. > :17:40.Exeter scored four tries to beat Gloucester 34-20.

:17:41. > :17:43.If they can get past Saracens they'll meet either Wasps

:17:44. > :18:02.We're getting to an exciting time of the year, we have the Devon County

:18:03. > :18:05.show coming up, the sun shining and one of my favourite events of any

:18:06. > :18:12.year is the Ten Tors challenge. The organisers of the Ten Tours

:18:13. > :18:15.Challenge on Dartmoor have said this year's event was one of the best

:18:16. > :18:17.ever with nearly 3000 It was the expedition's 57th

:18:18. > :18:21.year and the 40th year Scott Bingham was at Okehampton Camp

:18:22. > :18:24.and looks back over the weekend. At the boom of the starting guns,

:18:25. > :18:28.thousands of young people 400 teams of six, each

:18:29. > :18:33.facing a trek of 35, 45 or 55 miles across some

:18:34. > :18:41.of the toughest terrain in Britain. Half an hour later and the Jubilee

:18:42. > :18:46.Challenge for youngsters The event is celebrating

:18:47. > :18:52.its 40th year. And minutes later, a relatively

:18:53. > :19:04.new category called Fresh Tracks. Young people with challenging life

:19:05. > :19:09.issues lead Dartmoor What do you get out

:19:10. > :19:15.of walking with the pony? Responsibility because you need

:19:16. > :19:18.to make sure they are safe This is Standon farm,

:19:19. > :19:26.one of the checkpoints There's been about 30 teams

:19:27. > :19:32.through so far, 4.5 hours in, Sometimes the mist has been quite

:19:33. > :19:44.bad but with good navigating We're trying to push the crowd

:19:45. > :19:50.and see how far we can get today. They tell us it's not

:19:51. > :19:53.a race but a challenge, First day isn't a race

:19:54. > :19:57.but the second day is. And just after 8am on that second

:19:58. > :20:02.day, this team seems to agree. They can afford to slow down

:20:03. > :20:05.and they are still first across the line in one

:20:06. > :20:09.of the fastest times ever. We ran a lot, we ran

:20:10. > :20:24.the whole of last night. I can't quite believe

:20:25. > :20:28.we've got here. It was tough, it was more

:20:29. > :20:33.like mental, you had to say to yourself, we can do this

:20:34. > :20:36.and we will get to the next tor. The organisers say safer routes

:20:37. > :20:39.and the weather conditions helped make this year's event one

:20:40. > :20:43.of the best ever. Fall-out rates are low this year,

:20:44. > :20:46.I think the lower limb injuries are lower this year so in that sense

:20:47. > :20:50.it's been very successful. From the air, the remaining teams

:20:51. > :20:54.stretch out across the moor, an epic challenge not just for them

:20:55. > :20:59.but for everyone involved. Ten Tors is a training exercise

:21:00. > :21:02.for military personnel It's also a huge logistical

:21:03. > :21:09.challenge and down on the ground, planning for next year's event

:21:10. > :21:29.is already under way. Congratulations to all involved. It

:21:30. > :21:34.was a typical Dartmoor weekend in terms of weather, a bit of

:21:35. > :21:35.everything, because on Friday night there was a newly blowing on the

:21:36. > :21:44.moors. The key was when one of the

:21:45. > :21:50.competitors said it was good visibility. Some welcome rain for

:21:51. > :21:56.those who needed and the countryside is looking fantastic the moment.

:21:57. > :22:02.Beautiful greens, the flowers out, thank you for that photo, and the

:22:03. > :22:07.coastline looking impressive, this is the Dorset coast at sunrise this

:22:08. > :22:12.morning. There is some road towards the end of the week so be patient if

:22:13. > :22:17.you are desperate for rain, but tomorrow is a fine and dry day, some

:22:18. > :22:22.pleasant sunshine, a bit more cloud but it should be fine and dry. Out
