:00:10. > :00:11.Good evening, I'm Charlie McArdle, welcome to BBC Channel Islands.
:00:12. > :00:16.The remedy for a shortage of doctors - a change in the law means
:00:17. > :00:17.Jersey could soon have home-grown GPs.
:00:18. > :00:19.Visitor numbers are up in Guernsey, but transport
:00:20. > :00:31.There are some really good increases this year. But when we do refer back
:00:32. > :00:34.to 2015, we can see there is some way to go.
:00:35. > :00:44.And schoolchildren raise the roof for the BBC Ten Pieces Orchestra.
:00:45. > :00:46.Political moves are underfoot to avoid a
:00:47. > :00:53.The Health Minister wants to change the law to allow GPs to train
:00:54. > :00:56.at surgeries on the island before they qualify,
:00:57. > :00:58.so they can fill posts when doctors retire.
:00:59. > :01:12.It takes years of study and training to become a Dr. And would be GPs
:01:13. > :01:16.have gone to the UK or further afield before they have qualified.
:01:17. > :01:20.In Jersey, work is being done to attract the next oration of doctors,
:01:21. > :01:26.and make sure they're ready to fill the shoes of GPs who are preparing
:01:27. > :01:31.to retire. We note that eventually Alderney GPs will be retiring. From
:01:32. > :01:35.experience, we are training nurses locally, that if you train them
:01:36. > :01:40.luckily, they tend to stay locally. But we have no provision for
:01:41. > :01:43.training GPs at the present time, other than the rotational, where
:01:44. > :01:47.they get a tasting during their training. So it's absolutely about
:01:48. > :01:53.succession planning for GP service going forward. Trainee GPs would
:01:54. > :01:59.work alongside qualified GPs developing a relationship with
:02:00. > :02:05.patients. But sing a trainee would not mean a cut-price appointment.
:02:06. > :02:11.When you have a trainee, they had to be closely supervised. This in with
:02:12. > :02:17.dentists. So it is not that they would be charged less, no. GPs in
:02:18. > :02:21.Jersey nurture the relationship tween doctor and patience, and it is
:02:22. > :02:25.hoped these values will appeal to the next generation of doctors. The
:02:26. > :02:34.voice we hope to nurture our own, there are a people who want to get a
:02:35. > :02:38.taste of the way we do things here. It's suddenly old-fashioned, but in
:02:39. > :02:43.my view, much better approach to patients. It is hoped that by
:02:44. > :02:46.allowing the doctors of the future to hone their skills on the islands,
:02:47. > :02:50.any potential problems can be avoided.
:02:51. > :02:52.Guernsey's airport declared a full emergency this morning
:02:53. > :02:54.when a private plane reported smoke in its cockpit.
:02:55. > :02:56.The single-engine aircraft was flying from the UK to Jersey
:02:57. > :02:59.when it had to make an emergency landing in Guernsey.
:03:00. > :03:01.The airport's general manager said the plane arrived safely
:03:02. > :03:08.Jersey voters can have their say on the island's proposed
:03:09. > :03:15.The creation of six so-called super constituencies will be debated
:03:16. > :03:20.But a scrutiny panel is holding meetings ahead of that to find out
:03:21. > :03:25.The first one will be at St Saviour's Parish Hall
:03:26. > :03:32.Jersey's States garden nursery, which was considered as a potential
:03:33. > :03:35.site for the future hospital, has been put out to lease.
:03:36. > :03:39.Warwick Farm grew plants for the islands parks and gardens,
:03:40. > :03:43.but now most of that work has been passed to private companies.
:03:44. > :03:46.A spokesperson from property holdings says rather than let it
:03:47. > :03:49.fall into disrepair, the States would rather
:03:50. > :03:53.rent it out to a farmer or grower who could make use of it.
:03:54. > :03:56.The lease is available for nine years while the States decide
:03:57. > :04:06.A boost in business travellers has led to an increase
:04:07. > :04:12.There's been a rise of 2000 people in the first quarter of this year
:04:13. > :04:15.But officials say more improvements are needed.
:04:16. > :04:29.A busy morning in Guernsey's tourist information centre. And for these
:04:30. > :04:39.visitors, a few comments on the island to take on board. It is
:04:40. > :04:43.costly. When we think of travelling, we're always trying to fit Guernsey
:04:44. > :04:50.in, it is not micro that easy, because it's not a stop of place to
:04:51. > :04:58.other locations. We came across on the ferry. It was lovely. So far.
:04:59. > :05:03.The latest Government surveys shows there has been a 7%increase in
:05:04. > :05:07.visitors, with just over 2000 more people for the year compared to
:05:08. > :05:14.2016. The number of visitors visiting by sea has increased. The
:05:15. > :05:19.economic development committee was cautious in welcoming the increase.
:05:20. > :05:25.Some really good increases this year, but on the refer back to 2015,
:05:26. > :05:30.there is still some way to go. Some say that transport remains a
:05:31. > :05:35.concern. The loss of GDP to the island is entirely significant. From
:05:36. > :05:43.the bar 2014, it is over 40,000 passengers. Eddie asked for the
:05:44. > :05:52.development in GDP terms, it is around ?500. That puts the GDP value
:05:53. > :05:58.at around ?20 million. This coincides with Sark's greatest
:05:59. > :06:06.tourism survey. With there renewed confidence, could the real prospect
:06:07. > :06:12.of a new ferry, the Bailiwick's heading in the right direction. But
:06:13. > :06:14.still has some way to go to get to the numbers of the past.
:06:15. > :06:16.There are calls to return the remains of a Nazi concentration
:06:17. > :06:19.camp survivor home to Jersey after his grave was found
:06:20. > :06:22.Frank Le Villio was deported during the occupation
:06:23. > :06:24.for taking a joyride on a German officer's motorbike.
:06:25. > :06:28.He died in England in 1946 from tuberculosis.
:06:29. > :06:30.Mr Le Villio was buried in a pauper's grave.
:06:31. > :06:34.The Constables of St Helier and St Saviour hope to bring him
:06:35. > :06:37.back home, but it could be a difficult process
:06:38. > :06:46.The people of Guernsey now formally own the Little Chapel,
:06:47. > :06:48.one of the island's most famous tourist attractions.
:06:49. > :06:51.The Little Chapel Foundation bought the property deeds today,
:06:52. > :06:53.along with a parcel of land nearby, for ?1.
:06:54. > :06:55.More investment is planned for the site in the future,
:06:56. > :06:59.including improved disabled access and a visitor centre.
:07:00. > :07:01.The Foundation says today is an important milestone
:07:02. > :07:08.for the restoration of the attraction.
:07:09. > :07:15.We have been working on the chapel and doing a lot of work to preserve
:07:16. > :07:20.it. But know the people Guernsey own it, it's entrust with the Foundation
:07:21. > :07:25.to properly looked after it. We can go forward with that ownership. We
:07:26. > :07:26.can put a proper business plan in place.
