:00:00. > :00:24.Smaller but taller ? more ddtails on plans for Jersey s new hospital.

:00:25. > :00:29.We need a flexible solution that can deal with whatever health

:00:30. > :00:30.developments take place in the future.

:00:31. > :00:32.You're watching the late news in the Channel Islands.

:00:33. > :00:37.Also in tonight's programme: A new deputy has been

:00:38. > :00:40.elected in Guernsey, the results are in from tod`y's

:00:41. > :00:48.Restaurants and hotels will have to move to make w`y

:00:49. > :00:52.Ministers have formally lodged proposals for a brand new,

:00:53. > :00:56.purpose-built hospital to go behind the current one to make it

:00:57. > :01:00.cheaper, quicker and less disruptive to patients.

:01:01. > :01:03.Now the Health Minister just has to get the States to agree to it.

:01:04. > :01:07.Emma Chambers has tonight's top story.

:01:08. > :01:09.Jersey's General Hospital is here to stay, despite it

:01:10. > :01:12.being the chosen location for the island's future one.

:01:13. > :01:16.That's because the new hosphtal will be a separate building built

:01:17. > :01:20.around the back along Newgate Street.

:01:21. > :01:23.It's significantly more efficient and more affordable

:01:24. > :01:27.to build in a single phased, shorter programme with a single

:01:28. > :01:30.interface to the existing hospital - that's very different

:01:31. > :01:37.There will therefore be less disruption to patients

:01:38. > :01:41.They've managed to go ahead with plans for this smaller,

:01:42. > :01:48.We were looking for 20,000 square metres on the ground floor,

:01:49. > :01:50.that enabled us to have Outpatients, Emergency and imaging services

:01:51. > :01:53.all on the ground floor, making it more accessible to people.

:01:54. > :01:56.With this new scheme we are looking at a 10,000 square metre footprint

:01:57. > :02:00.and what the Patriotic Stredt car park allows us to do is to come

:02:01. > :02:03.in at a number of different levels, into Outpatients on those ldvels,

:02:04. > :02:06.which gets us over that problem of having everything

:02:07. > :02:13.The plans also mean all of this will have to go.

:02:14. > :02:17.I come here every afternoon to have coffee with my family and friends.

:02:18. > :02:20.At the end of the day, we'll be losing out on something

:02:21. > :02:24.that is good, but also we would be gaining a lot more, a new hospital.

:02:25. > :02:27.Other changes include moving the Outpatients department to across

:02:28. > :02:38.the park, where hospital staff accommodation is.

:02:39. > :02:42.And using the old hospital as an education centre

:02:43. > :02:53.But only if this new ?46 million hospital idea gets the go-ahead

:02:54. > :03:02.from the States at the end of next month.

:03:03. > :03:04.Earlier today, I spoke to Jersey's Health Minister,

:03:05. > :03:06.Senator Andrew Green, and asked him what's he going to do

:03:07. > :03:10.about all those businesses that will now need to move.

:03:11. > :03:15.That is probably the downside of this scheme.

:03:16. > :03:19.We know that two of the biggest businesses are willing selldrs,

:03:20. > :03:21.and of course one or two others perhaps it's a little bit

:03:22. > :03:29.This will be a matter of negotiation with them.

:03:30. > :03:32.How can you ensure that people continue to get good health care

:03:33. > :03:53.This car parking is central to your plans. We did not want to btild

:03:54. > :03:56.around patients. We did not want to be renovating and building `round

:03:57. > :04:00.them, it is not good for thd patients and not good for infection

:04:01. > :04:04.control, and it is also much more expensive. We wanted to be `ble to

:04:05. > :04:09.give the contract to a clear sight. The car park was there. Think about

:04:10. > :04:14.mothers with pushchairs, and young children. They will be able to come

:04:15. > :04:18.straight from the car park hnto the hospital. I would also applx to

:04:19. > :04:23.those who are disabled or those bringing in elderly relativds as

:04:24. > :04:24.well. How can you ensure th`t people continue to get good health care

:04:25. > :04:26.while the hospital is being built? That is a good question,

:04:27. > :04:28.it's an important question. You will have noted that we won t

:04:29. > :04:31.have moved inpatient servicds at all, and that's why

:04:32. > :04:33.it is essential to get thosd few buildings on the side

:04:34. > :04:35.of Patriotic Street, the businesses we talked

:04:36. > :04:37.about at the beginning, and that allows us to build

:04:38. > :04:40.a new energy centre while the old energy centre runs

:04:41. > :04:44.current inpatient services. The only services moving

:04:45. > :04:49.are administration and Outp`tients. I can safely say that we will be

:04:50. > :04:52.able to maintain a safe, efficient and good service

:04:53. > :04:58.during the changeover. The results are in from Guernsey's

:04:59. > :05:04.by-election in the Vale district. He was one of four candidatds

:05:05. > :05:09.standing in today's election, which was called after the death

:05:10. > :05:12.of Deputy Dave Jones in Julx. He's laid out his priorities

:05:13. > :05:25.for the new role. At the moment it looks like

:05:26. > :05:31.governors are fairly busy in certain areas. Government is set. Wd had a

:05:32. > :05:36.government created in April and May, and I am effectively floating at the

:05:37. > :05:39.moment. The areas I am interested in our transport, small businesses and

:05:40. > :05:42.the tourist economy. Next tonight, nearly a third of nine

:05:43. > :05:45.and ten-year-olds in Guernsdy That's one of the key findings

:05:46. > :05:49.after the height and weight of primary school pupils

:05:50. > :05:51.were measured to give a picture If this is making you hungrx,

:05:52. > :05:57.new statistics may curb Because figures out today

:05:58. > :06:05.for childhood obesity aren't good. One in six five and six-year-olds

:06:06. > :06:08.are overweight or obese, and one in three nine

:06:09. > :06:17.and ten-year-olds are. Children who are overweight are more

:06:18. > :06:20.likely to become overweight adults, and that entails all the problems

:06:21. > :06:23.of diabetes, heart disease We want children to be the right

:06:24. > :06:28.weight as children, so they grow up to be

:06:29. > :06:33.a healthy weight as an adult. Education is a key part of the plan

:06:34. > :06:36.to slim down the figures, and the pupils at this school seem

:06:37. > :06:39.to know their stuff. If you are not healthy,

:06:40. > :06:43.you might get diabetes It is good to eat lots of fruit

:06:44. > :06:51.and not loads of chocolate. I eat bread in the morning,

:06:52. > :07:05.and I don't have crisps. I have been watching this

:07:06. > :07:10.and telling my parents about this. It can make a huge difference

:07:11. > :07:16.because the messages are coling and they can educate

:07:17. > :07:24.their parents and the community As soon as you start educathng

:07:25. > :07:28.the children, it will seep out There may be no quick fix

:07:29. > :07:33.for the problem, but any success in cutting the figures over

:07:34. > :07:36.the coming the years will bd Jersey's finance industry added ?14

:07:37. > :07:44.billion to the UK economy l`st year, according to a report

:07:45. > :07:46.by economic consultants. Representatives from the island

:07:47. > :07:50.are in London trying to persuade UK politicians,

:07:51. > :07:53.civil servants and think tanks of the value of Jersey to the UK

:07:54. > :07:56.and the rest of Europe. The research estimates Jersdy's

:07:57. > :07:59.finance industry generates ` quarter And it suggests the island pumps

:08:00. > :08:04.?150 billion of foreign invdstment Some football news now,

:08:05. > :08:14.and Guernsey FC have lost against Cray Wanderers

:08:15. > :08:17.at Hayes Lane. They were hoping they would walk

:08:18. > :08:19.away with their first away win of 2016 but the Wanderers

:08:20. > :08:24.beat them 1-0. Weather-wise, today

:08:25. > :08:27.seemed to be a lot milder than I expected it to be -

:08:28. > :08:30.I wore far more layers But, how are the temperaturds

:08:31. > :08:46.shaping in the days ahead? Hello, good evening. We havd got a

:08:47. > :08:50.settled pattern of weather `t the moment. Still the chance of a fuse

:08:51. > :08:54.showers around and we should have some bright and dry weather. Some

:08:55. > :08:58.sunshine and a few showers `cross the island state in the day. The

:08:59. > :09:02.main setup over the next few days is for us to continue to see an area of

:09:03. > :09:06.high pressure that is just `bout close enough to keep us reasonably

:09:07. > :09:10.fine and dry, but the low pressure to the east is still there `nd it

:09:11. > :09:13.still sits there as we move through tonight and to a good part of the

:09:14. > :09:19.day tomorrow. One weather sxstem that might trickle towards ts, or

:09:20. > :09:24.try to get towards us, is that front on the western side of the `rea of

:09:25. > :09:28.low pressure. We hold onto this through Friday, but into thd weekend

:09:29. > :09:34.we get an area of low presstre developing down here and th`t will

:09:35. > :09:38.freshen the easterly wind, so more of a breeze on Saturday. With these

:09:39. > :09:43.weather fronts eventually tried to get towards us by the time we get to

:09:44. > :09:46.Sunday night and more espechally into Monday. Some showers are

:09:47. > :09:51.possible for the rest of thd night, but not any of those and it becomes

:09:52. > :09:57.keep the mist from forming. Still keep the mist from forming. Still

:09:58. > :10:01.quite chilly. Some sunshine tomorrow morning, and it may be that we cloud

:10:02. > :10:05.over in the afternoon and the potential for a few showers later in

:10:06. > :10:12.the day and a top temperature of 14 Celsius. The wind mainly from the

:10:13. > :10:16.North or Northeast. You're `lso starting to change. Showers across

:10:17. > :10:21.Central parts of Spain and Portugal, eastern parts of France and into

:10:22. > :10:27.Belgium and Germany, where ht is quite cold. For us, we hold onto

:10:28. > :10:28.some pride, dry weather, but a stiff, easterly breeze developing by

:10:29. > :10:32.Saturday. Have a good night. Well, that's it from BBC

:10:33. > :10:34.Channel Islands for today, but Alison will be back

:10:35. > :10:36.with you at 6:30pm Before that, your local radho

:10:37. > :11:08.stations BBC Guernsey and BBC Jersey that cool breeze to factor in. Here

:11:09. > :11:12.is Matt with the national outlook. Good evening. Just as the weather

:11:13. > :11:16.starts to quieten down across many parts of the country it notched up a

:11:17. > :11:20.gear across the east coast today. Near gale force winds whipping up

:11:21. > :11:26.rough seas for our weather watchers in north Yorkshire and in Norfolk.

:11:27. > :11:29.Low pressure across the North Sea, still in place tonight bringing

:11:30. > :11:33.gusty winds down the east coast and showers as well. Away from that most

:11:34. > :11:36.will be dry. An isolated shower down to west Cornwall and the Isles of

:11:37. > :11:42.Scilly but it's high pressure in charge in the west. Lighter winds

:11:43. > :11:47.and clearer skies and coldest of the conditions. A night to snuggle down

:11:48. > :11:51.under the duvet. Frost-free to the east of England. The breeze will

:11:52. > :11:54.still be there in the morning. One or two showers on the coast. Most

:11:55. > :11:58.will get away with a dry morning commute. Sunniest weather to the

:11:59. > :12:01.west. Again a touch of frost here. One or two mist and fog patches

:12:02. > :12:05.Greater chance of frost to start the day in Scotland and Northern Ireland

:12:06. > :12:09.where some of the mist and fog patches will last to mid-morning.

:12:10. > :12:10.But winds are lighter here and with
