:00:23. > :00:26.told the BBC there was alwaxs a high chance it would fail.
:00:27. > :00:30.The fund is currently suspended while it's under review.
:00:31. > :00:36.The start-up company that took ?400,000 of public
:00:37. > :00:41.The software firm Logfiller Limited got a loan
:00:42. > :00:46.But the company's now gone, along with the money.
:00:47. > :00:50.Well, the States set up the Jersey Innovation Fund
:00:51. > :00:53.three years ago to invest in new businesses.
:00:54. > :00:56.It's lent money to various projects, including ?400,000
:00:57. > :00:59.to Logfiller Limited earlier this year.
:01:00. > :01:01.But this week, it was revealed Logfiller is being
:01:02. > :01:11.The large majority of the ftnding was absorbed through the employment
:01:12. > :01:17.I don't know what the criteria were by which the States of Jersey
:01:18. > :01:20.made the decision but it is certainly a common and sound
:01:21. > :01:22.principle to back promising technology that eventually
:01:23. > :01:28.The execution of the details is where many of these very well
:01:29. > :01:35.So should the States be takhng such risks with public money?
:01:36. > :01:38.That issue's currently under investigation.
:01:39. > :01:42.We want to make quite sure that all the checks and balances are done
:01:43. > :01:45.that can be done to ensure `s much probity as possible and as luch
:01:46. > :01:48.examination is done as posshble to ensure that such investmdnts
:01:49. > :01:51.are as sound as they possibly can be.
:01:52. > :01:55.The politician who oversees the fund wasn't available to speak to us
:01:56. > :01:59.today but said in a statement that a number of actions have bedn taken,
:02:00. > :02:03.including instructing a loc`l insolvency practice to do whatever
:02:04. > :02:06.necessary to protect the States' interests.
:02:07. > :02:09.And that the States has madd provision for default.
:02:10. > :02:12.Whatever the provisions, the investigation into the fund
:02:13. > :02:14.will question whether the States should be gambling with public
:02:15. > :02:22.The cost of living in Jersex has risen almost double than Gudrnsey.
:02:23. > :02:25.Official figures out in both islands today show that the rate
:02:26. > :02:30.of inflation rose to 1.1% in Guernsey where as in Jersey it
:02:31. > :02:33.rose by 2% - the highest increase since 2012.
:02:34. > :02:43.Cleaning, phone bills and g`rdening services have all driven up the cost
:02:44. > :02:53.But it seems the 3% hike in rental prices is causing
:02:54. > :02:57.A lot of our population are currently enduring ment`l stress
:02:58. > :03:02.where it becomes really that they do not have anythhng left
:03:03. > :03:04.after covering the red at the end of the
:03:05. > :03:07.day, so we have more islanddrs with rental stress combined with
:03:08. > :03:09.increasing energy costs and increasing motoring cost and
:03:10. > :03:12.increasing fuel costs and it is a very worrying statistic.
:03:13. > :03:16.So what other costs are worrying islanders?
:03:17. > :03:24.Cos you have to eat it all the time actually so yes food.
:03:25. > :03:27.Food and clothes, even to go to the doctor is more expensive
:03:28. > :03:31.Sugar, bread and fresh meat, with beef in particular seehng
:03:32. > :03:33.a decrease in price over the past year.
:03:34. > :03:39.We've done it through running specials on beef recently
:03:40. > :03:43.but unless all the retailers react in the same way then
:03:44. > :03:47.Not all retailers have put their prices down
:03:48. > :03:52.for the customers to see, oh, it's got cheaper.
:03:53. > :03:57.So certainly you're finding things on special offer in supermarkets
:03:58. > :04:01.and butchers now that wouldn't be previously they'd be classed
:04:02. > :04:05.And with more increases on the cards with the budget debate in Ddcember -
:04:06. > :04:07.the shadow of price rises m`y be cast over islanders
:04:08. > :04:12.Industry leaders are calling for a change in approach to the taxes
:04:13. > :04:17.Representatives from the Gudrnsey Motor Trades Association have met
:04:18. > :04:19.with Deputies ahead of next month's budget debate.
:04:20. > :04:22.They're concerned that the current system is too fragmented,
:04:23. > :04:25.and say that simply increashng taxes on fuel isn't
:04:26. > :04:41.We've got registration fees, we ve got mission tax but only on cars for
:04:42. > :04:46.the first time. It is time to look at what is trying to be achheved in
:04:47. > :04:53.regard to funds and how you administer it. Without saying we
:04:54. > :04:54.have the answer, what we ard saying, review is definitely needed
:04:55. > :04:58.otherwise fuel prices will spiral. Jersey Police have launched
:04:59. > :05:01.a new website in a bid 73 cases have been reported
:05:02. > :05:04.in the island since April 2015, but officers believe more whll come
