:01:05. > :01:08.The nursery behind me has been open for nearly 25 years, but with a loss
:01:09. > :01:12.The Constable says he couldn't justify keeping it open any longer.
:01:13. > :01:15.Clearly, one of the issues we've had to wrestle with is Avranches Nursery
:01:16. > :01:17.doesn't simply cater for parishioners, it also caters
:01:18. > :01:21.for more than 50% of the users are from outside
:01:22. > :01:25.the parish, and it's much harder for the rate payers of St Helier
:01:26. > :01:30.to justify a loss of that magnitude when it's not even helping
:01:31. > :01:34.Parish plans to move the nursery to another site were rejected
:01:35. > :01:37.by planning and other options were exhausted.
:01:38. > :01:41.Today's decision has left questions over staff jobs,
:01:42. > :01:44.and parents with seven months to find a new nursery
:01:45. > :01:52.A senior Guernsey midwife accused of misconduct in the death
:01:53. > :01:55.of a newborn baby initially claimed the care provided
:01:56. > :02:03.The Nursing and Midwifery Council says Lisa Granville's initial
:02:04. > :02:07.assessment flavoured the subsequent investigation, the tribunal heard.
:02:08. > :02:10.It follows the death of a baby almost three years ago.
:02:11. > :02:13.Mike Wilkins has been looking at this week's
:02:14. > :02:19.These three Guernsey midwives are charged with misconduct.

:02:38. > :02:42.Today at a hearing held by the Nursing and Midwifery Council,
:02:43. > :02:45.it was revealed that investigations into the death were hampered
:02:46. > :02:48.because one of the midwives, Manousaki, who was from Greece,
:02:49. > :02:51.struggled with English and that she didn't understand
:02:52. > :02:55.There were also claims that midwives were reluctant to call
:02:56. > :03:00.The NMC claims that had the death of another baby in 2012 been
:03:01. > :03:03.adequately investigated, then the death of the baby in 2014
:03:04. > :03:19.It's unsettling to hear, but I have to stress that the NMC
:03:20. > :03:22.has been back to this hospital since and says the staff here have
:03:23. > :03:28.But with several weeks to go and more witnesses to give evidence,
:03:29. > :03:35.a clearer picture should emerge as the hearing continues.
:03:36. > :03:38.There are calls for a Jersey minister to resign,
:03:39. > :03:42.following a damning report into a taxpayer-funded loan scheme.
:03:43. > :03:45.The Innovation Fund was set up to support new business ideas
:03:46. > :03:49.but it's potentially lost ?1.4 million of public money.
:03:50. > :03:54.Some politicians say Senator Philip Ozouf,
:03:55. > :03:57.who oversaw the fund, should step down.
:03:58. > :04:00.When a fund is set up, the fund is set up by Treasury
:04:01. > :04:03.Resources and then passed to the relevant department
:04:04. > :04:07.So, the fund itself was set up under Philip Ozouf's watch
:04:08. > :04:15.I was asked to take responsibility to sort out issues to do
:04:16. > :04:17.with the Innovation Fund, and that's what I've done.

:04:21. > :04:26.vindicated in the actions I've taken to stop the waste of public money.
:04:27. > :04:30.Changes to Guernsey's education system seem to be being imposed
:04:31. > :04:34.on teachers rather than being made with their input.
:04:35. > :04:37.That's the warning from the largest teacher's union in the island.
