:00:15. > :00:29.Is just such a disappointment. A bit devastating for people under 18

:00:30. > :00:31.because it is their main event of the year.

:00:32. > :00:33.Also tonight: And living a lie to survive -

:00:34. > :00:43.the remarkable story of one woman who outwitted the Nazis.

:00:44. > :00:45.After 13 years and tens of thousands of visitors,

:00:46. > :00:54.Organisers Warren Le Sueur and Warren Holt say they both

:00:55. > :00:57.want to pursue separate projects, but it's emerged they haven't

:00:58. > :01:00.cancelled their booking at the Trinity Showground so,

:01:01. > :01:02.is this really the end for Jersey's biggest music festival?

:01:03. > :01:09.This report from Jessica Banham contains flashing images.

:01:10. > :01:15.From classic '80s acts like Madness...

:01:16. > :01:18.To modern soul singers like John Newman,

:01:19. > :01:21.Jersey Live has featured a number of big-name acts.

:01:22. > :01:24.But last year ticket sales were down and today it has been

:01:25. > :01:27.announced that the festival won't be returning.

:01:28. > :01:29.There is not much to do for our youngsters,

:01:30. > :01:34.They will miss out on money and tourism.

:01:35. > :01:45.It's a bit devastating for people under 18 because it's obviously

:01:46. > :01:52.But I think it was dying out a bit anyway.

:01:53. > :01:54.It is not just those who are already famous that found

:01:55. > :01:58.It also provided a welcome boost to local talent.

:01:59. > :02:01.Growing up, it was something to aspire to.

:02:02. > :02:03.Going and seeing it, it is different to other festivals.

:02:04. > :02:31.The cost of putting on events like this is escalating all the time, the

:02:32. > :02:34.security, the crew, the things people don't see is very expensive.

:02:35. > :02:37.Jersey Live has been held here at the Trinity showground

:02:38. > :02:40.It usually takes place the first weekend in September.

:02:41. > :02:42.Despite the announcement today, the festival organisers have asked

:02:43. > :02:53.And with both organisers saying they are hoping

:02:54. > :02:55.to pursue separate projects, tourism bosses don't think we'll

:02:56. > :03:02.I wouldn't be surprised if something equally as exciting came

:03:03. > :03:11.Other people are interested in staging something.

:03:12. > :03:18.So we might have seen the last of Jersey Live.

:03:19. > :03:23.But it might not be the end of music festivals here in Trinity.

:03:24. > :03:26.Tomorrow Britain marks Holocaust Memorial Day,

:03:27. > :03:29.to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children who died

:03:30. > :03:32.at the hands of the Nazis during the Second World War.

:03:33. > :03:34.And being Jewish in the Channel Islands during the occupation also

:03:35. > :03:37.meant misery, deportation and, for three women in Guernsey,

:03:38. > :03:46.But now, after more than 70 years we can reveal a Jewish woman hid

:03:47. > :03:49.in plain sight from the Nazis, concealing her religion

:03:50. > :03:53.And it's been discovered she could have been in love

:03:54. > :03:56.with a man responsible for drafting some of the island's

:03:57. > :04:04.Miriam Jay lived in Guernsey during its occupation,

:04:05. > :04:07.and during those five long years she kept a remarkable secret

:04:08. > :04:15.She lived here, in St Peter Port for some of the war.

:04:16. > :04:18.If discovered, Miriam would have at the very least faced imprisonment

:04:19. > :04:25.This man has researched how she managed to go

:04:26. > :04:32.Miriam would know these laws would be applying

:04:33. > :04:35.to her and although she never said she was a Jew.

:04:36. > :04:38.She knew if she got caught she would be in serious trouble.

:04:39. > :04:47.If she was uncovered, Miriam may have been deported

:04:48. > :04:49.like these three Jewish women on this plaque.

:04:50. > :04:52.But Miriam may have had someone looking out for her.

:04:53. > :04:54.Advocate George Ridgway lived with her during the occupation.

:04:55. > :04:56.Richard Heaume believes they could have been

:04:57. > :04:57.romantically involved, and that put the lawyer

:04:58. > :05:04.As Solicitor-General in the island's States he was involved in passing

:05:05. > :05:09.some of the very laws Miriam would have feared as a Jew.

:05:10. > :05:13.He had to register them with the royal court before

:05:14. > :05:16.the Jurats of the day, he was charged alone with presenting

:05:17. > :05:19.the orders for registration by the Jurats so he had a bit

:05:20. > :05:30.And when advocate Ridgway died in 1942 it was Miriam Jay

:05:31. > :05:33.who was one of the lead mourners at his funeral.

:05:34. > :05:36.Despite his death, she went on to survive the occupation

:05:37. > :05:40.At her grave, Miriam's great nephew explains how he feels

:05:41. > :05:54.Sadness that we will never know the true story, pride

:05:55. > :06:03.I know that there were very few Jews that survived Guernsey,

:06:04. > :06:06.that once they were discovered to be Jewish they were either packed off

:06:07. > :06:17.And this story of survival is one that's resonated with the leader

:06:18. > :06:19.of the Channel Island's small Jewish community.

:06:20. > :06:22.I was actually proud to hear it, proud to hear that this

:06:23. > :06:24.Advocate Ridgway by his own silence saved this woman's life,

:06:25. > :06:31.and I think some recognition needs to be made of this shall we say

:06:32. > :06:38.And if the connection between this Jewish woman

:06:39. > :06:41.and a Guernsey lawyer is proven, I'm told efforts might be made

:06:42. > :06:48.to have Advocate Ridgway honoured by the State of Israel.

:06:49. > :06:54.If you've had to wear a few more layers recently or if you've had

:06:55. > :06:59.to scrape ice off your car windscreen, you'll have

:07:00. > :07:00.probably noticed it's been a bit frosty lately.

:07:01. > :07:03.The gritters have been out in force to tackle the icy conditions,

:07:04. > :07:06.and Luxmy Gopal joined the team early this morning.

:07:07. > :07:07.MUSIC: Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

:07:08. > :07:10.This is one of the teams out to battle against

:07:11. > :07:16.Jersey's gritters have had a busy few days of making our roads safer.

:07:17. > :07:22.We can get a call at any time, day or night, one of the managers

:07:23. > :07:25.will say come in at 4, 5 o'clock, get the vehicles

:07:26. > :07:27.ready, and we'll head straight out on the roads.

:07:28. > :07:31.This morning, Jersey's roads weren't as icy as they have been recently.

:07:32. > :07:34.But this is what they looked like a mere four years ago.

:07:35. > :07:38.When we had the heavy snow a few years ago,

:07:39. > :07:41.we were doing 12-hour shifts on and off, it got a bit

:07:42. > :07:44.tiring but we did the job, so it's just one of them,

:07:45. > :07:47.have a cup of coffee, get a nice thick coat on and off we go.

:07:48. > :07:50.And if we get that snowfall again, Jersey is stocked up ready.

:07:51. > :07:54.We use it through our winter months for de-icing,

:07:55. > :07:57.for the frost which we have had recently in the past few days,

:07:58. > :08:03.The infrastructure team has been reduced since the snow of 2013,

:08:04. > :08:04.so if it happens again, other departments

:08:05. > :08:10.But who knows if we will see those conditions again soon.

:08:11. > :08:23.I've only ever seen that once before in my lifetime,

:08:24. > :08:32.But, come snow or ice, day or night, Bob's team will be out

:08:33. > :08:35.and about showing true grit in protecting the island's roads.

:08:36. > :08:39.Friday evening's ferry sailing from St Malo to Jersey has been

:08:40. > :08:41.cancelled and the sailings between the islands

:08:42. > :08:43.and Poole rescheduled due to the weather forecast.

:08:44. > :08:46.On its website Condor Ferries said the "wind speeds will be in excess

:08:47. > :08:48.of operational limits for the Channel Islands and St Malo

:08:49. > :08:51.areas" and with "changeable weather forecast and tidal limitations it'll

:08:52. > :08:56.be necessary to delay" the Condor Liberation sailings to Poole.
