:00:13. > :00:14.Deceptively dangerous - an inquest hears of the tragic loss

:00:15. > :00:18.of a woman who drowned on the eve of her birthday.

:00:19. > :00:21.Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands,

:00:22. > :00:25.Also tonight: A blow for woman's football -

:00:26. > :00:37.People trying to save a Jersey woman who drowned last summer have told

:00:38. > :00:40.an inquest the sea conditions that night were some of

:00:41. > :00:45.Joy Godfray was swept out to sea on the eve of her 32nd birthday.

:00:46. > :00:52.Today's inquest heard that Joy was a "fairly good swimmer",

:00:53. > :00:54.who often swam at Green Island with her friend and

:00:55. > :01:00.On that night there was an orange tide warning, with large waves

:01:01. > :01:06.It is not clear whether Joy and her friend Austin

:01:07. > :01:11.They got the bus here and went for a swim.

:01:12. > :01:14.But they quickly got into difficulty.

:01:15. > :01:17.In video footage played to the inquest, a tourist

:01:18. > :01:20.who was filming the storm from roundabout here captured

:01:21. > :01:24.the moments before Joy was swept out to sea.

:01:25. > :01:29.In it, we see Joy and Austin in the water down here,

:01:30. > :01:32.struggling to stay on their feet as the waves bashed

:01:33. > :01:37.Witnesses say Joy was thrown a lifeline, but it

:01:38. > :01:42.It was an August weekend that claimed six lives in the seas

:01:43. > :01:46.around the British Isles, including one here in Jersey.

:01:47. > :01:52.This was when the rescue boat launched to find Joy.

:01:53. > :01:55.The man in the black T-shirt, who'd already saved a man

:01:56. > :01:59.from the water at Green Island, was telling crews where to find her.

:02:00. > :02:02.High tides and strong winds meant the sea was deceptively dangerous.

:02:03. > :02:04.They were odd conditions because it was a lovely summer's

:02:05. > :02:07.evening, but at the same time the sea was extraordinary

:02:08. > :02:13.At the seaside next to the beach, I'm sure it looked inviting.

:02:14. > :02:19.If you went out to any kind of depth it was devastating.

:02:20. > :02:25.One of the crew was tipped overboard as the fire rescue

:02:26. > :02:31.When they and the lifeboat crew found Joy, it was so rough,

:02:32. > :02:35.the coxswain made the decision not to try to land, but to take Joy

:02:36. > :02:40.Joy's family say they're devastated at the tragic loss,

:02:41. > :02:44.and repeatedly during the inquest made a point to thank those

:02:45. > :02:50.The inquest heard today how serious conditions were that night.

:02:51. > :02:53.Dr David Howell, an RNLI medic who was onboard one of the lifeboats

:02:54. > :02:56.and had tried to resuscitate Joy, described them as some of the worst

:02:57. > :03:02.While coxswain Andrew Hibbs described how, on two occasions,

:03:03. > :03:04.the all-weather lifeboat nearly rolled onto the inshore boat.

:03:05. > :03:07.He said, "The public don't realise, on high tide,

:03:08. > :03:15.Joy's friend Austin, who'd been with her in the sea,

:03:16. > :03:17.told the inquest they hadn't discussed the conditions

:03:18. > :03:20.when they arrived at the beach, they just went straight in.

:03:21. > :03:23.The coroner, Mark Harris, concluded by saying Joy's death was "tragic",

:03:24. > :03:26.and praised the courage and professionalism of all those

:03:27. > :03:32.He recorded her death as death by drowning.

:03:33. > :03:35.A prolific paedophile who used to live in Guernsey has been jailed

:03:36. > :03:38.for life after admitting a catalogue of child abuse.

:03:39. > :03:40.Mark Frost, also known as Andrew Tracey, pleaded guilty

:03:41. > :03:42.to 45 offences against young boys in England and Thailand.

:03:43. > :03:45.This afternoon a judge at the Old Bailey described his

:03:46. > :03:49.actions as "horrific and deeply disturbing" and gave him 13

:03:50. > :03:52.concurrent life sentences, with a minimum term of 16 years.

:03:53. > :03:57.There are fears the full scale of Frost's crimes have yet

:03:58. > :04:00.to emerge, and police in the UK and Guernsey, where he lived

:04:01. > :04:03.in the 1960s and again in the late 1990s, are urging other victims

:04:04. > :04:07.to come forward by contacting either Guernsey Police directly

:04:08. > :04:20.or the dedicated NSPCC helpline that has been set up.

:04:21. > :04:24.The 2017 women's football Muratti between Jersey and Guernsey is off

:04:25. > :04:26.because the Greens can't find enough players.

:04:27. > :04:29.Our sports editor Tim Pryor joined me earlier to explain why

:04:30. > :04:36.Guernsey FA weren't putting up a team.

:04:37. > :04:39.The basic answer is a lack of players.

:04:40. > :04:43.To play in the women's Muratti you have to be registered to a club

:04:44. > :04:51.A lot of the top Guernsey players play in Hampshire in the UK.

:04:52. > :04:55.They are affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association,

:04:56. > :05:00.and not the Guernsey Football Association.

:05:01. > :05:03.They say it is not right to blame the Hampshire FA

:05:04. > :05:06.and that there is plenty of enthusiasm amongst

:05:07. > :05:13.In recent years it has become one-sided to Jersey.

:05:14. > :05:16.Yes, last year's was a 9-0 win, so really one-sided.

:05:17. > :05:22.In fact, Jersey have won 14 out of the last 15 games.

:05:23. > :05:33.It is a shame because Jersey would have been hoping

:05:34. > :05:37.to use this Muratti as part of the prep for the Island Games.

:05:38. > :05:39.What is the Jersey Football Association saying about it?

:05:40. > :05:42.They say they are disappointed, but they are hopeful this can be

:05:43. > :05:43.reinstated maybe as soon as next season.

:05:44. > :05:50.I understand they are also trying to work to understand this women's

:05:51. > :05:53.-- replace this Muratti with another game, and bring a high profile side

:05:54. > :05:56.to the island as part of those preparations for the Island

:05:57. > :06:00.The lack of attractions in Guernsey for families in wet weather has been

:06:01. > :06:04.But that could change after planners approved major changes to one

:06:05. > :06:07.Mark Inchley's been finding out more.

:06:08. > :06:09.He's the little yellow plane with a big heart that captured

:06:10. > :06:11.the hearts of islanders, and even spawned a series

:06:12. > :06:15.But, since flying his last ever flight two years ago,

:06:16. > :06:18.the next chapter for Joey has been far from clear with

:06:19. > :06:23.But that's all set to change with new plans for Oatlands Village,

:06:24. > :06:25.which include a permanent home for Joey.

:06:26. > :06:27.Part of that is a 2000 square metre play barn,

:06:28. > :06:31.a play area for children from 0- 12.

:06:32. > :06:40.Contained within that would be the resting home for Joey.

:06:41. > :06:44.There have to be places for people to go when it is wet and rainy,

:06:45. > :06:50.and if they can see that there is somewhere for their children

:06:51. > :06:53.to play here, even if the weather turns nasty, then it

:06:54. > :06:58.So good news for Joey and his fans but, with a drop in the number

:06:59. > :07:00.of people visiting Guernsey last year, will the new-look Oatlands be

:07:01. > :07:04.enough to plug the gap when it comes to what some perceive to be the lack

:07:05. > :07:06.of rainy-day and tourist attractions for families in the island?

:07:07. > :07:11.There is not very much for visitors or children to go to.

:07:12. > :07:15.It is a lot more for children to do, and it would be a lot more appealing

:07:16. > :07:17.for families to come to Guernsey, definitely.

:07:18. > :07:20.So, some way to go before the work here is finished,

:07:21. > :07:22.but also some excitement about what's to come.

:07:23. > :07:31.And, it seems, Joey's story is far from over.

:07:32. > :07:33.Some "unique" vehicles have come up for sale in Guernsey,

:07:34. > :07:35.and one thing's for sure, they'd certainly make

:07:36. > :07:40.Penny Elderfield went to take a look.

:07:41. > :07:45.The answer to a mid-life crisis perhaps for others.

:07:46. > :08:04.But if that one's not for you, perhaps an old sewage cart

:08:05. > :08:10.States Worsk is auctioning off a collection of its old vehicles.

:08:11. > :08:12.They are taking sealed bids from anyone who'd

:08:13. > :08:19.We are probably focusing mainly at the commercial sector,

:08:20. > :08:28.It may provide spares to an existing fleet.

:08:29. > :08:32.There is quite a unique variety of vehicles that we are trying

:08:33. > :08:37.to dispose of here, so it probably is quite a limited market.

:08:38. > :08:40.If you're interested you can get in touch with States Works and come

:08:41. > :08:47.Although I wouldn't rate your chances of being allowed to take one

:08:48. > :09:01.That's your news this Wednesday evening, BBC Radio Guernsey

:09:02. > :09:09.Good evening. We have happy few showers around the last couple of

:09:10. > :09:13.days. This was from one of our weather watchers. A largely dry

:09:14. > :09:18.but there is still a risk of a feud but there is still a risk of a feud

:09:19. > :09:22.showers, and definitely feeling cold tomorrow, even colder air than we

:09:23. > :09:26.have had today. The reason for that is an easterly wind which gradually

:09:27. > :09:30.creeps into the night and today tomorrow, cold air coming in from

:09:31. > :09:34.southern parts of Scandinavia, that process well underway by the end of

:09:35. > :09:40.tomorrow and certainly with us on Friday to. Daytime temperatures only

:09:41. > :09:47.three or four above freezing. Process today, a subtle change in

:09:48. > :09:51.the wind direction, and we may draw air up from Spain and Portugal that

:09:52. > :09:55.comes around the ridge of high pressure, so hopefully starting to

:09:56. > :10:02.lift temperatures. Overnight, the chance of a shower. The wind turned

:10:03. > :10:05.easterly, freshening by the morning. Night-time temperatures down to

:10:06. > :10:10.three degrees, the possibility of Frost first thing tomorrow. More

:10:11. > :10:17.clout than we have seen recently tomorrow, the odd shower which could

:10:18. > :10:21.be sleet. Five or 6 degrees will be the maximum temperature that feeling

:10:22. > :10:26.colder because of the easterly winds. They continue to feed in even

:10:27. > :10:31.lower temperatures by the time we get into Friday, so we are looking

:10:32. > :10:38.at a cold feel to the air for Friday and Saturday. And the risk of a feud

:10:39. > :10:42.wintry showers. Quite a brisk wind on Friday. By Sunday, slightly less

:10:43. > :10:53.cold air and generally a lot of clout.

:10:54. > :10:55.We will be back at 6:30pm tomorrow night.

:10:56. > :11:08.cloudy and Ben Rich will take you through the bigger picture.

:11:09. > :11:14.Good evening. Over the next few days I suspect it's going to feel like we

:11:15. > :11:21.have been plunged into the deep freeze. Cold weather on the way and

:11:22. > :11:25.not necessarily crisp cold weather, with blue skies. A lot of cloud,

:11:26. > :11:29.there was some sunshine today across parts of west Wales, for instance.

:11:30. > :11:33.That lifted temperatures up to 11. But further east as you can see from

:11:34. > :11:36.the picture, there was a lot of cloud feeding in and that pegged

:11:37. > :11:37.temperatures down into
