:00:15. > :00:17.Counting the cost of fog - While passengers face delays Aurigny

:00:18. > :00:22.say it's costing them up to a hundred thousand pounds a day

:00:23. > :00:25.Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC

:00:26. > :00:31.Illegal and extremely dangerous - Snares found on public parkland

:00:32. > :00:49.Something that is a barbaric method to do.

:00:50. > :00:54.That's the cost of fog to one Channel Island airline.

:00:55. > :00:56.Aurigny has confirmed today that paying for hotels and food

:00:57. > :01:00.for stranded passengers as well as a loss of revenue

:01:01. > :01:03.It comes after another day of travel disruption.

:01:04. > :01:17.been doing a well roaring trade over the last few days.

:01:18. > :01:24.Stranded passengers providing the boost.

:01:25. > :01:27.And for some the delay is just the beginning of a long journey.

:01:28. > :01:30.I'm going to London because I have got a transatlantic flight booked to

:01:31. > :01:33.go and see my parents because my father's not very well.

:01:34. > :01:40.It has all been delayed, so I have had to

:01:41. > :01:42.rebook my transatlantic flight which costs money and I'm

:01:43. > :01:44.still not guaranteed to get off today.

:01:45. > :01:48.I had to book more holidays work, as well.

:01:49. > :01:50.Is this your first visit to Guernsey?

:01:51. > :01:58.What you think of the capability to

:01:59. > :02:04.Just rang to get a flight is really difficult.

:02:05. > :02:06.It is not their fault, they are trying their best,

:02:07. > :02:09.but definitely I think the state should be focusing on this issue.

:02:10. > :02:12.It was a similar story in Jersey where the fog's been

:02:13. > :02:16.But it's not just the passengers feeling the pain.

:02:17. > :02:19.Airlines can't insure themselves against fog as it's

:02:20. > :02:25.For a company like Aurigny, the fog's been costing them up

:02:26. > :02:32.Aurigny says it's looking at thermal-imaging technology to try

:02:33. > :02:35.and improve its chances of landing and taking off in foggy conditions.

:02:36. > :02:45.In simple terms, it is a headset that the pilot wears.

:02:46. > :02:52.There is a camera on the nose of the aircraft

:02:53. > :02:55.which looks through the fog and improves our success rate by

:02:56. > :03:02.But another piece of equipment that could minimise fog disruption,

:03:03. > :03:06.The Civil Aviation Authority has told me today that a system called

:03:07. > :03:09.Egnos which uses satellites to cut through the fog should be up

:03:10. > :03:12.and running in Guernsey by the summer at the latest.

:03:13. > :03:14.Illegal, dangerous and a risk to dogs.

:03:15. > :03:16.The recent discovery of three snare traps in a popular walking area

:03:17. > :03:18.in Jersey has sparked warnings to dog owners.

:03:19. > :03:21.But it's the sophistication of these latest devices that has

:03:22. > :03:26.caused real safety concern as Emma Chambers reports...

:03:27. > :03:29.They are used to catch food and vermin.

:03:30. > :03:33.But today they are being described as archaic and inhumane

:03:34. > :03:43.after the discovery of three snares in this area of St Ouen.

:03:44. > :03:50.These anchors they had, the dog would have panicked and hurt itself

:03:51. > :03:56.quite badly if it had been caught in it. They had their point years ago

:03:57. > :04:00.when we were overrun but now I don't think they are needed.

:04:01. > :04:03.You can see the long grass is a haven for dogs to run in.

:04:04. > :04:05.The parish centennier showed me where they were found.

:04:06. > :04:08.He says they are illegal in this parkland, but its the way

:04:09. > :04:11.the traps were planted that's worried him the most.

:04:12. > :04:14.We found two, two of these which are more lethal

:04:15. > :04:17.than the original ones we found six months ago.

:04:18. > :04:20.The difference between the snares is that one is stubby wooden

:04:21. > :04:25.pushed into the sand, and it will come out very easily.

:04:26. > :04:29.This one is totally different - long, you can see how long it is -

:04:30. > :04:31.and what will happen is a rabbit or dog or whatever animal

:04:32. > :04:39.is will go along, he'll go in through there and that will pull

:04:40. > :04:47.We are surprised and very disappointed.

:04:48. > :04:49.This is a great dog walking area, these things are dangerous to dogs

:04:50. > :04:55.and we just didn't expect to ever see them again but they are here.

:04:56. > :04:58.The JSPCA is now calling for an outright ban of all snares,

:04:59. > :05:04.not just the self-tightening devices and those on protected land.

:05:05. > :05:07.There's many other methods to catch wild animals that can be caught

:05:08. > :05:10.for food such as rabbits and wood pigeons and then of course

:05:11. > :05:13.there is vermin as well which does have to be controlled -

:05:14. > :05:16.I recognise that but equally there are many other methods you can

:05:17. > :05:19.use rather than something that comes from the early 18th century

:05:20. > :05:29.and is quite honestly in the 21st century a barbaric method to do.

:05:30. > :05:30.But until that happens, officials are relying on islanders

:05:31. > :05:36.Especially those that shouldn't be used on Jersey's protected reserves.

:05:37. > :05:39.Earlier today I spoke to John Pinel the Principal Ecologist

:05:40. > :05:41.at the Department of the Environment and asked him how serious

:05:42. > :05:44.would the injuries be if a pet was to get trapped by one

:05:45. > :06:02.They are very nasty things and they can quickly cause damage. The

:06:03. > :06:09.problem is if a cat could get stuck in the snare that ours, the lesions

:06:10. > :06:14.become particularly bad when animals struggle. Three have been found in

:06:15. > :06:22.the last week. Are you concerned about them? We are concerned. We

:06:23. > :06:28.found three in a similar place last year. Who do you think would be

:06:29. > :06:36.setting them and why would they be doing this? I have no idea in this

:06:37. > :06:42.day and age who will be seeking to kill rabbits in this way. There are

:06:43. > :06:52.many other ways of taking rabbits. As a department, would you like to

:06:53. > :06:56.see an outright ban? Self locking scared -- snares are banned but

:06:57. > :07:03.sliding ones are not. We have to look at this problem. How concerned

:07:04. > :07:09.should dog walkers and people be about the snares being in place? On

:07:10. > :07:15.the whole it is probably a low risk. There are many dangers in the

:07:16. > :07:20.countryside. The real risk about the snares is to wildlife. We have a lot

:07:21. > :07:21.of protected species which could be caught in these snares. People

:07:22. > :07:25.shouldn't be overly concerned. Same-sex marriages could take place

:07:26. > :07:28.in Guernsey as early as May. The law will be reviewed early next

:07:29. > :07:30.month, before being ratified If approved, it could come

:07:31. > :07:37.into effect on the 2nd of May. Jersey Police are donating unclaimed

:07:38. > :07:38.jewellery to the charity The collection of watches,

:07:39. > :07:44.chains, and rings have been in storage at the police station

:07:45. > :07:47.for over three years. Most of the time, the police can

:07:48. > :07:49.reunite owners with their lost or stolen property but that hasn't

:07:50. > :07:53.been the case with this jewellery. Jersey Hospice will sell it to raise

:07:54. > :08:06.money to provide care We are going to get the jewellery

:08:07. > :08:11.valued and will decide on what the best course of action is and how we

:08:12. > :08:17.can maximise the value for the charity. Some pieces are nice but I

:08:18. > :08:21.suspect they are costume jewellery pieces. Some are wedding rings and

:08:22. > :08:23.could have significant value and we will decide how to raise the most

:08:24. > :08:25.money once we decide how much they money once we decide how much they

:08:26. > :08:27.are worth. Sport news and the Court

:08:28. > :08:30.of Arbitration for Sport will this summer rule

:08:31. > :08:32.on whether Jersey's bid to join the football governing body Uefa

:08:33. > :08:34.should be considered The Jersey FA wants the island to be

:08:35. > :08:41.given international status - it's currently run like a county,

:08:42. > :08:44.affiliated to the English FA. Last year, Uefa officials

:08:45. > :08:46.rejected the application, arguing the island isn't recognised

:08:47. > :08:48.as an independent state. But Jersey believe their bid

:08:49. > :08:53.should at least be put The weather is always a popular

:08:54. > :09:02.conversation even more so over the last few days

:09:03. > :09:05.because of the fog. Can Bee Tucker put a smile

:09:06. > :09:16.on air travellers faces. Good evening. We have seen very

:09:17. > :09:21.little in the way of sunshine today. The hill fog will continue through

:09:22. > :09:29.the night. Many of you have had scenes like this and you can see how

:09:30. > :09:33.the cloud is. Tomorrow, we will keep a lot of cloud over us. There will

:09:34. > :09:37.be some light rain into the afternoon and with the westerly

:09:38. > :09:42.winds picking up, some of the low cloud should lift in places. We are

:09:43. > :09:48.south of this weather front and we have warm air that has left us with

:09:49. > :09:53.cloud and hill fog and poor visibility that will remain

:09:54. > :09:57.overnight. We start to pick up through the day. This weather front

:09:58. > :10:01.will be sinking southwards. You can expect light rain during the

:10:02. > :10:06.afternoon and early evening. The wind is really picking up and we

:10:07. > :10:11.have some light rain and drizzle. Hill fog is still remaining. A very

:10:12. > :10:17.mild night and these temperatures you would expect by day. Below of

:10:18. > :10:23.nine Celsius. A graze start of the day perhaps drizzle and fog. The

:10:24. > :10:28.westerly wind picks up and that should clear the cloud in places but

:10:29. > :10:34.I don't think it will break. Towards the tail end of the day, we will

:10:35. > :10:38.start to see that rain sinking southwards. Tomorrow, the last of

:10:39. > :10:44.the mild days and temperatures making it up to 11 Celsius. For

:10:45. > :10:55.Thursday, you can expect some strong winds. Storm Doris has been named.

:10:56. > :11:00.You can expect 40 to 50 mph gusts. Have a good evening. That is it from

:11:01. > :11:03.the late news team. I am back tomorrow night at 6:30pm. I will see

:11:04. > :11:08.you then. Good night. the Outlook toward the end of the

:11:09. > :11:09.week and then milder again from the wheel them. More on storm Doris now

:11:10. > :11:12.with Matt Taylor.
