:00:12. > :00:15.Guernsey greenhouse gas emissions are down BUT it's not all good news.

:00:16. > :00:18.Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands -

:00:19. > :00:26.Also tonight... Private nurseries in Jersey say

:00:27. > :00:32.they need guaranteed States funding if they're to survive.

:00:33. > :00:38.I think it's the lack of communication and what's going on,

:00:39. > :00:42.it could impact people severely, taking away that funding is going to

:00:43. > :00:43.have a massive impact and I'm not sure they've talked about those

:00:44. > :00:48.wider implications. New figures show Guernsey's

:00:49. > :00:50.cut its greenhouse gas But despite the report

:00:51. > :00:53.showing an encouraging reduction in emission levels,

:00:54. > :00:55.there's no time to be complacent, Guernsey will soon be exporting

:00:56. > :01:03.its non-recyclable waste to Sweden. But the island's landfill sites

:01:04. > :01:05.are still causing problems. The emissions from this rubbish

:01:06. > :01:09.contribute to the totals. The three worst emissions offenders

:01:10. > :01:16.are waste, accounting for 29%. Transport, contributing

:01:17. > :01:18.more than 26%. And energy power generation -

:01:19. > :01:25.pumping out 15%. Transport's one area

:01:26. > :01:27.the public can help. In the UK, there are financial

:01:28. > :01:35.incentives to switch to electric cars, and the British government

:01:36. > :01:37.is also considering a scrappage But there are no signs of that

:01:38. > :01:44.from Guernsey's government. As you probably know,

:01:45. > :01:46.in the UK, a lot of taxes, there are charges relating to higher

:01:47. > :01:49.emission vehicles and a big incentive for the manufacturers

:01:50. > :01:51.and consumers to go for lower emitting vehicles and we benefit

:01:52. > :01:54.from that by virtue of sharing a similar market, even though

:01:55. > :01:57.we do not have the incentives they have in the UK,

:01:58. > :01:59.there are reasons to own and drive Guernsey agreed to an 80% reduction

:02:00. > :02:12.in emissions from 1990 to 2050. It's so far managed just over 29%,

:02:13. > :02:15.and unless the island makes significant changes to its energy

:02:16. > :02:17.use, then demand will continue Two teachers from Jersey's De La

:02:18. > :02:31.Salle College are in a critical condition after being knocked down

:02:32. > :02:33.by a car. It happened while they were in

:02:34. > :02:36.France on a ski trip last week. They were hit by a speeding

:02:37. > :02:38.driver who left the scene De La Salle's assistant headteacher

:02:39. > :02:46.says he doesn't expect the pair will be back in Jersey before

:02:47. > :02:49.the summer term. An inquest in Jersey has found that

:02:50. > :02:51.a teenage motorcyclist from St Helier died from multiple

:02:52. > :02:54.injuries after hitting a car. Nineteen-year-old Nathan Vibert

:02:55. > :02:56.was riding his motorbike along La Route de la Houge Bie in January

:02:57. > :03:00.2016 when he approached a stationary bus and lost control,

:03:01. > :03:02.colliding with a car coming Private nurseries in Jersey

:03:03. > :03:14.are worried they won't survive without guaranteed

:03:15. > :03:16.funding in future. Although money's been secured

:03:17. > :03:22.for nurseries until next year, there's been no agreement about how

:03:23. > :03:25.they'll be funded after that. Nursery days may be carefree play

:03:26. > :03:29.days, but there's confusion over nursery education funding in Jersey

:03:30. > :03:31.that's making staff and parents unhappy,

:03:32. > :03:33.who want to be able to plan ahead. It could impact people severely

:03:34. > :03:36.in getting people back to work and taking away funding

:03:37. > :03:42.will have a massive impact and I'm not sure they have thought

:03:43. > :03:47.of the wider implications. That the private nurseries had

:03:48. > :03:52.funding was really good because all children had

:03:53. > :03:54.the opportunity to go A nurseries lobby group says

:03:55. > :04:11.the Education Department is making We're extremely frustrated,

:04:12. > :04:14.because we've been in contact with them, we've been in meetings

:04:15. > :04:17.with them and they gave us assurances that

:04:18. > :04:21.they would inform us. They actually cancelled two meetings

:04:22. > :04:23.we had arranged with them on the basis they had no

:04:24. > :04:26.new information to give us and they would definitely contact us

:04:27. > :04:33.as soon as the money had been found. The Education Minister wasn't

:04:34. > :04:35.available for interview today but speaking earlier,

:04:36. > :04:36.his chief education officer explained that the update

:04:37. > :04:38.on finances wasn't passed on because they didn't have time

:04:39. > :04:41.to talk before a States There's no decision on how much

:04:42. > :04:46.funding private and States-run nurseries will get after next year,

:04:47. > :04:49.so talks with the Education Department will have to continue

:04:50. > :05:01.until an agreement's reached. Calls for supermarkets to introduce

:05:02. > :05:03.specialist trollies will benefit children with autism

:05:04. > :05:05.and disabilities in both It follows a successful petition

:05:06. > :05:10.in the UK which saw over 600 supermarkets bring

:05:11. > :05:12.in these purpose built trollies for bigger children

:05:13. > :05:14.with specialist needs. Now the Channel Islands Co-Op has

:05:15. > :05:16.listened to a local campaign and ordered eight similar trollies

:05:17. > :05:19.for their larger stores We are always keen to look

:05:20. > :05:32.at improvements that enhance We want to be inclusive and have

:05:33. > :05:36.as many members shopping with us. When we heard about it we did

:05:37. > :05:39.research and found the trolleys, they are ordered and we have

:05:40. > :05:41.contacted the people concerned to let them know

:05:42. > :05:44.they are on the way. Jersey could follow England

:05:45. > :05:46.in banning letting agents from charging tenant fees in a bid

:05:47. > :05:48.to reduce housing costs. The island's housing

:05:49. > :05:54.minister Deputy Anne Pryke, said she's concerned that some fees

:05:55. > :05:56.may not be reasonable, such as charging both landlords

:05:57. > :05:59.and tenants for the same services. The minister wants people

:06:00. > :06:01.to share their views The number of Jersey primary schools

:06:02. > :06:11.getting extra literacy support has doubled after the success

:06:12. > :06:13.of a community scheme. Every Child Our Future is a charity

:06:14. > :06:16.that funds one-to-one help Launched last September,

:06:17. > :06:27.it's not only grown in interest from volunteers but has also boosted

:06:28. > :06:30.reading levels as Emma They say practice makes perfect,

:06:31. > :06:34.and it seems to be proving right For the last six months,

:06:35. > :06:47.volunteers have been giving up their time to sit and listen

:06:48. > :06:50.to stories read by pupils. It started in four schools but now

:06:51. > :06:53.it's been rolled out to four To read with more confidence

:06:54. > :07:00.and more fluidity, to talk to them about their books

:07:01. > :07:02.and their comprehension of the text, and those things are really,

:07:03. > :07:05.really important, and we do it in school, but where we got

:07:06. > :07:08.additional resources, complementory resources to do that,

:07:09. > :07:11.as well - that is really important, that makes a difference.

:07:12. > :07:14.The scheme has been able to expand because of the interest its gained

:07:15. > :07:16.from those wanting to help. There are now 270 volunteers

:07:17. > :07:21.supporting these children. I never got that opportunity so it's

:07:22. > :07:24.nice to see them be able to have that extra chance to be able

:07:25. > :07:28.to read and write and interact It's really just giving something

:07:29. > :07:38.back to the community and helping They're potentially struggling

:07:39. > :07:41.with their reading because English It's hoped all primary schools

:07:42. > :07:56.in the island will be able to benefit from this partnership

:07:57. > :07:58.with the Every Child Especially as Jersey literacy levels

:07:59. > :08:01.for primary-age pupils lags But the chief education officer

:08:02. > :08:08.doesn't want to push it too soon. We want to go at the speed

:08:09. > :08:10.where we can recruit and train enough volunteers,

:08:11. > :08:12.because it's very important when children make a relationship

:08:13. > :08:15.with a volunteer that continues So we don't want to spread our

:08:16. > :08:18.volunteers too thinly. So it seems the literacy levels

:08:19. > :08:21.of Jersey's children will continue to increase as long

:08:22. > :08:24.as there are enough reading A survey sent to Jersey homes asking

:08:25. > :08:35.for views on the postal service has a bit of an embarrassing mistake

:08:36. > :08:38.on it: there isn't enough Jersey Post, who commissioned

:08:39. > :08:42.the survey, blames the error They say they're making sure

:08:43. > :08:48.it won't happen again and in the meantime ask people

:08:49. > :08:51.to just write the last letter of their post code

:08:52. > :08:55.next to the fifth box. David Braine has your all

:08:56. > :09:08.important weather forecast. thank you. Hello, good evening. It's

:09:09. > :09:12.been an eventful. We've had the problems along the coastlines with

:09:13. > :09:16.the high tides. Tomorrow we are not out of the woods yet. There was rain

:09:17. > :09:21.in the forecast, two summit is welcome rain. Read or later, turning

:09:22. > :09:25.increasingly windy later, we may end up with gale force winds again

:09:26. > :09:34.tomorrow evening. A lot happening, lots of cloud on the satellite. The

:09:35. > :09:40.showers tend to fade away overnight, but we gain another system, an area

:09:41. > :09:44.of low pressure that develops and of us on Wednesday. Once the rain goes

:09:45. > :09:49.through, we've got these westerly winds that end up being quite

:09:50. > :09:54.strong. The good news is, Thursday now looks predominantly dry. We

:09:55. > :10:00.should get some sunshine. Overnight tonight, we've got some clear sky

:10:01. > :10:05.that was across us from earlier in the afternoon. That will continue

:10:06. > :10:08.through the night. It is mainly dry overnight. Quite lustily with

:10:09. > :10:16.westerly winds. Just an isolated shower with night-time temperatures

:10:17. > :10:18.of 6 degrees. Quite a bit of cloud developing overnight, it will

:10:19. > :10:22.produce outbreaks of rain quite quickly in the morning. We end up

:10:23. > :10:27.with half the day being rather wet. The rain bank clearing after

:10:28. > :10:32.lunchtime. What replaces it is a very westerly westerly wind, briefly

:10:33. > :10:35.some sunshine, temperatures at 10 Celsius. Some warmth for southern

:10:36. > :10:47.parts of Spain and Portugal, double figures across parts. For us,

:10:48. > :10:50.finding on Thursday, not as good on Friday. It night.

:10:51. > :10:53.The combination of high winds and tides is expected to bring

:10:54. > :10:55.water and debris over sea walls tomorrow morning.

:10:56. > :10:58.Listen out for for regular travel news updates on BBC Radio Guernsey

:10:59. > :11:13.Good evening. We are about to head into March, the days are getting

:11:14. > :11:18.longer, but are they getting any warmer? Not really. We will get

:11:19. > :11:21.there in the end, but we will have to be patient, not very springlike

:11:22. > :11:26.at the moment. Some showers scattered around across England and

:11:27. > :11:27.Wales will tend to diminish in number,
