:00:12. > :00:13.Sacrificing the old for new? where you are.

:00:14. > :00:17.Is Jersey's historic past being lost to regeneration?

:00:18. > :00:20.Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands.

:00:21. > :00:27.Switching on - a drive on electric cars in Guernsey as the island calls

:00:28. > :00:38.for tougher controls on air pollution.

:00:39. > :00:40.There's concern some of Jersey's history

:00:41. > :00:44.A new report on the island's heritage criticises some

:00:45. > :00:49.building projects in St Helier for failing to preserve historic sites.

:00:50. > :01:00.Luxmy Gopal reports from the centre of town.

:01:01. > :01:06.The shop is an example of combining development with history on the

:01:07. > :01:10.island. It is a listed late Victorian building which was a

:01:11. > :01:14.jeweller 's for 200 years. More than a hundred of that was as CT Main,

:01:15. > :01:18.one of the oldest family businesses on the island until it closed in

:01:19. > :01:21.2009. When it became a Jack will store five years ago, it was able to

:01:22. > :01:25.retain a lot of the original features such as the interviewer

:01:26. > :01:31.windows, the panelling and the old saves but Heritage groups say some

:01:32. > :01:32.developments in St Helier aren't doing enough to preserve their

:01:33. > :01:32.sites' history. The changing face of St Helier -

:01:33. > :01:36.the theme of a new report by heritage groups who fear

:01:37. > :01:38.the town's historic character The report highlights the importance

:01:39. > :01:41.of protecting the past, saying two thirds of tourists

:01:42. > :01:43.surveyed felt heritage and history were key factors in deciding

:01:44. > :01:46.to visit Jersey. Latest figures show over 130,000

:01:47. > :01:49.visits were made to heritage sites Most Jersey residents surveyed said

:01:50. > :01:58.historic buildings are an asset So how do you balance promoting

:01:59. > :02:02.development with preserving history? According to the report,

:02:03. > :02:07.some projects have done it well, such as this Methodist Chapel

:02:08. > :02:10.turned community centre, which has kept its

:02:11. > :02:12.historic character. While others, such as the

:02:13. > :02:14.Southampton Hotel site development, have just kept the original

:02:15. > :02:18.building's facade, which heritage The heritage shouldn't be seen

:02:19. > :02:24.as a barrier It is about working

:02:25. > :02:29.with the heritage buildings and historic stock we have got to ensure

:02:30. > :02:33.the island retains its historic character and an attractive place

:02:34. > :02:37.to live and do business. And the challenge is progressing

:02:38. > :02:55.with regeneration while preserving the future St Helier is a priority

:02:56. > :02:58.for the ministers and it is not always possible for developers to

:02:59. > :03:02.keep as many story features as the store behind me has. It simply isn't

:03:03. > :03:06.practical with a lot of modern designs of buildings and as ever, we

:03:07. > :03:11.are limited by Spezia in St Helier and the island as a whole saw the

:03:12. > :03:16.damage had been -- balance between maintaining heritage and making new

:03:17. > :03:17.developments is difficult to meet. It's been announced the final report

:03:18. > :03:20.from the Jersey Care Inquiry Originally the independent inquiry

:03:21. > :03:23.into historical child abuse was due to publish its report

:03:24. > :03:26.by the end of last year, which was then put

:03:27. > :03:29.back to the end of this month. In a statement this evening

:03:30. > :03:31.the panel said it had received information related

:03:32. > :03:32.to its reccommendations A horse has been stabbed

:03:33. > :03:38.in the face in Jersey. It was attacked at a

:03:39. > :03:40.private premises in St Peter This video shows the dressage horse

:03:41. > :03:44.after the vet had treated it for what were described as serious

:03:45. > :03:47.but not life threatening injuries, which are likely to leave it

:03:48. > :03:49.permanently disfigured. Jersey Police say they are taking

:03:50. > :04:02.the attack "very seriously." It is a particular type of horse

:04:03. > :04:04.which is engaged in dressage. Obviously, this permanent

:04:05. > :04:11.disfigurement has a particular impact. Particularly gruesome. We

:04:12. > :04:12.believe a weapon was used and the horse had severe injuries to the

:04:13. > :04:13.nostril into the top of the face. Guernsey Electricity says it's

:04:14. > :04:16.having to plan ahead for what it's describing as an expected surge

:04:17. > :04:19.in popularity in electric cars by developing its own electric

:04:20. > :04:20.transport strategy. And it comes as the States aim for

:04:21. > :04:23.tougher controls on air pollution. This is one of Guernsey

:04:24. > :04:29.Electricity's new electric vehicles. It says we'll see many more of these

:04:30. > :04:31.in the coming years. I would see in Guernsey,

:04:32. > :04:34.particularly with the short journey times and fairly low mileage

:04:35. > :04:40.compared to the UK and European countries, that even the current

:04:41. > :04:43.range of electric vehicles If they're right, one of the major

:04:44. > :04:49.benefits for Guernsey would be a significant reduction

:04:50. > :04:51.in emissions, something measured here in this little green box on one

:04:52. > :04:56.of the island's busiest roads. This piece of kit is used

:04:57. > :05:09.to measure particulates. Specifically, P M tends which are

:05:10. > :05:10.particular it is up to ten Micro beats in diameter.

:05:11. > :05:14.But in simple terms, this monitoring station sucks in air

:05:15. > :05:18.This tells you the particularly busy times such as the school

:05:19. > :05:33.If there is going to be this continual bowl reliance, if we can

:05:34. > :05:36.do it in a way that is less reliance on fossil fuels, burning and

:05:37. > :05:40.combustion, then we will reduce these particular its, nitrogen

:05:41. > :05:43.dioxide, software dioxide levels and that will be really beneficial

:05:44. > :05:45.locally. He says small steps can

:05:46. > :05:47.result in big results - something demonstrated

:05:48. > :05:49.here at St Martin's Primary School where changes to traffic

:05:50. > :05:51.arrangements have halved I was surprised when I heard it had

:05:52. > :05:55.reduced pollution in the area. We are busy school

:05:56. > :05:57.and there is a lot So it has made

:05:58. > :06:01.a pleasing difference. Air pollution levels in the island

:06:02. > :06:04.aren't actually that bad. But if things are to improve it's

:06:05. > :06:07.going to be right here on Guernsey's roads

:06:08. > :06:12.that it all starts. Hundreds of students attended

:06:13. > :06:15.Jersey's higher education fair today finding out more

:06:16. > :06:28.about the opportunities Well, there is nearly 80 educators

:06:29. > :06:32.here today from universities across the UK. They're all here to offer

:06:33. > :06:35.advice to students about what courses they have on offer and what

:06:36. > :06:39.it's like to study at their university. Well, this is the 25th

:06:40. > :06:44.year of this event and what was new this year is that many of these

:06:45. > :06:47.exhibitors gave talks at the college last night. Today, they are

:06:48. > :06:50.expecting around 1000 students to attend and I have been talking to

:06:51. > :06:55.some of them about what they think of today's event. It's nice to talk

:06:56. > :06:59.to people that actually they're studying sea get their opinion

:07:00. > :07:03.rather than just the website. Being in Jersey, you can't go over to the

:07:04. > :07:07.UK and visit universities like the students can. I'm not sure what I

:07:08. > :07:13.want to do but just to see what unique could be like and what I

:07:14. > :07:17.could study is really informative. Joining me now is the education

:07:18. > :07:21.minister who opened the event here this afternoon. Deputy, why are

:07:22. > :07:25.events like this all-important? The art deeply important. This is an

:07:26. > :07:28.opportunity for students to get face-to-face with people who live

:07:29. > :07:32.and breathe in the universities across the UK and Europe so they get

:07:33. > :07:36.direct input from everybody. There is an ongoing review of student

:07:37. > :07:40.finance at the moment. I have been speaking to students who say we just

:07:41. > :07:42.can't afford to go to university overseas. What is the point of

:07:43. > :07:47.holding events like this if some families can't afford it? You know,

:07:48. > :07:51.student finance is one of those problems we are trying to tackle. We

:07:52. > :07:55.still produce a large amount of money to make sure that students

:07:56. > :07:57.have access to UK university but this is an opportunity for students

:07:58. > :08:00.to fully understand and connect with to fully understand and connect with

:08:01. > :08:06.those universities not just across the UK but here in Jersey to. Thank

:08:07. > :08:09.you very much. Well, this afternoon, may give students a better afternoon

:08:10. > :08:12.about their options, but there is still a question mark over how many

:08:13. > :08:17.families will be able to afford their students to study overseas.

:08:18. > :08:18.The scrutiny panel looking into student financial to publish their

:08:19. > :08:20.report by the end of this month. Today's weather has been dominated

:08:21. > :08:22.by fog with almost all flights in and out of Jersey and Guernsey

:08:23. > :08:33.being cancelled, Good evening. File continues to be a

:08:34. > :08:36.bit of a problem tonight and tomorrow but I think there is a

:08:37. > :08:39.chance of some slightly less moist air coming out of France that may

:08:40. > :08:44.well help improve the visibility but it may be short lived so further

:08:45. > :08:47.mist and fog around tomorrow. Still feeling quite mild. Brighter for a

:08:48. > :08:50.time especially through the afternoon. Perhaps later in the day

:08:51. > :08:54.into the evening, we will see more mist and fog returning. This weather

:08:55. > :08:59.from travels away from us through the night and through the day

:09:00. > :09:03.tomorrow. Drifting northwards but it leaves behind a legacy of layers of

:09:04. > :09:06.low cloud. The mist and fog. And all the breeze freshens up to shift

:09:07. > :09:10.that, it could be around for the next 24 hours or so. By the time we

:09:11. > :09:13.get is added, it is still there but this weather front will change

:09:14. > :09:18.things as women from Saturday and into Sunday. It brings some rain but

:09:19. > :09:22.also fresher, cleaner air by the time we get to Sunday afternoon and

:09:23. > :09:27.Sunday evening. That strike of mist and fog and low cloud, it will still

:09:28. > :09:30.away through the day tomorrow but away through the day tomorrow but

:09:31. > :09:34.for the rest of the night and at first tomorrow morning, more fog to

:09:35. > :09:38.content with and of course, you can get travel updates on the BBC local

:09:39. > :09:43.radio. Misty, foggy, spits of drizzle in the wind possible through

:09:44. > :09:46.the night to come. Light winds and temperatures and although then nine

:09:47. > :09:51.or 10 degrees. Tomorrow, this is the start of the day. It may well lift

:09:52. > :09:54.and break and by the time we get to the end of the morning and into the

:09:55. > :09:57.afternoon, the visibility does improve and there should be some

:09:58. > :10:01.breaks in that cloud maybe even letting sunshine in now and again

:10:02. > :10:04.but also clearing the visibility for a time. 13 degrees our top

:10:05. > :10:08.temperature with the wind from the south. On Saturday, a lot of cloud

:10:09. > :10:12.around again. Possibly even for the first thing in the morning. Things

:10:13. > :10:13.improve as we had through the second half of the weekend. Have a good

:10:14. > :10:13.night. Finally a look ahead to a special

:10:14. > :10:23.anniversary tomorrow. In its 80 year history, many a love.

:10:24. > :10:28.Honeyman will have arrived here and I bet there has been a fair few

:10:29. > :10:32.reunions and tearful goodbyes to. Jersey airport may have changed but

:10:33. > :10:37.those kind of memories stay the same. I am Aisling Tracy and I'm

:10:38. > :10:41.getting ready for a morning of the stature and stories with passengers,

:10:42. > :10:45.pilots and sweethearts as we celebrate the airport 's 80th

:10:46. > :10:50.birthday. Join me on BBC radio Jersey tomorrow morning from six.

:10:51. > :10:53.And you can listen to Ashley from six tomorrow morning. You're

:10:54. > :10:54.up-to-date with news of the Channel islands. We will be back at 6:30am

:10:55. > :11:03.tomorrow. Until then, good night. day. On Sunday, cloudier, maybe

:11:04. > :11:16.spots of rain. Good evening, in the spring sunshine

:11:17. > :11:19.we saw temperatures as high as 17.5 Celsius. Not as warm or Sonning on

:11:20. > :11:23.Friday. Still a lot of dry, settled weather in the forecast for the next

:11:24. > :11:27.few days. This was the sunset captured by one of our Weather

:11:28. > :11:31.Watchers. Clear skies there. We have had increasing amounts of cloud

:11:32. > :11:34.moving in from the West. Through the remainder of tonight we will

:11:35. > :11:37.continue to see that cloud across the south-west of England, the

:11:38. > :11:42.Channel Isles, weaving in across Wales, Northern Ireland and western

:11:43. > :11:44.Scotland. Bringing with it some outbreaks of drizzly rain,

:11:45. > :11:48.particularly around the coast and the hills. Further east, clear skies

:11:49. > :11:52.and the coldest temperatures. We are likely to see frost across eastern

:11:53. > :11:55.parts of Scotland by Friday morning. The west of Scotland will see the

:11:56. > :11:59.cloud moving in, bringing spots of light, drizzly rain. A similar

:12:00. > :12:02.picture for Northern Ireland. Fairly cloudy and grey. A bit of hill fog

:12:03. > :12:03.here
