:00:31. > :00:36.Just three months before the Island Games,

:00:37. > :00:48.there's a mass walk-out in Jersey women's football.

:00:49. > :00:52.A woman from Jersey whose husband died from a brain tumour

:00:53. > :00:55.less than a year after their wedding wants to raise awareness

:00:56. > :00:57.of the disease so other families don't have to go

:00:58. > :01:01.Emma Cotillard was six months pregnant when she and her husband

:01:02. > :01:04.Justin had to cut short their honeymoon so he could get

:01:05. > :01:07.Jessica Banham has their story, which you may find upsetting.

:01:08. > :01:10.Emma talks to Mia about her father every day.

:01:11. > :01:13.A keen sportsman, Justin often split his time between the boxing

:01:14. > :01:19.But one night during the couple's honeymoon in France in the summer

:01:20. > :01:21.of 2015, he no longer recognised his new wife.

:01:22. > :01:23.Returning home to St Helier, he was diagnosed with

:01:24. > :01:31.we both had careers, we had our lovely

:01:32. > :01:36.We just thought we're a really lucky couple to have found this together,

:01:37. > :01:40.and then just to have that bolt out of the blue, terminal cancer

:01:41. > :01:48.just couldn't believe what we were hearing.

:01:49. > :01:50.Brain tumours kill more adults under 40 in the UK

:01:51. > :01:55.Here in Jersey, the most recent statistics show that almost 200

:01:56. > :01:58.people were seen for brain tumours at the General Hospital

:01:59. > :02:08.But once diagnosed with a cancerous tumour, just 14% of adults

:02:09. > :02:15.The impact of brain tumours are very significant,

:02:16. > :02:22.and they're very difficult to treat because surgically there's always

:02:23. > :02:24.a potential risk that you will damage the brain

:02:25. > :02:27.For Justin, despite successful surgery his tumour grew back,

:02:28. > :02:29.and he was given just two weeks to live.

:02:30. > :02:32.He managed to survive for a further ten months, until his family

:02:33. > :02:37.At the time Mia had developed chicken pox, and wasn't

:02:38. > :02:40.allowed into the hospice where he was staying.

:02:41. > :02:42.They came into us and said, he is hanging on for

:02:43. > :02:59.And it was brother said, because he has not seen

:03:00. > :03:02.Mia for two days, maybe he wants to see her.

:03:03. > :03:06.That's the worst part about this whole story.

:03:07. > :03:12.So the nurses said, you know, it's a one off,

:03:13. > :03:15.if we bring Mia up, we'll bring her straight into Justin's

:03:16. > :03:17.room and let her have some final time with him.

:03:18. > :03:19.Emma believes further research into brain tumours is vital -

:03:20. > :03:22.there have been few developments in how to treat them

:03:23. > :03:25.And ultimately she hopes that by telling Justin's story,

:03:26. > :03:28.she might be able to prevent other families from going through

:03:29. > :03:39.Jersey spends far less on funding university students than many places

:03:40. > :03:42.in the rest of the world, according to a new report

:03:43. > :03:46.The group says it's essential that the States considers

:03:47. > :03:50.Earlier I spoke to our reporter Julie Flanagan, who's been

:03:51. > :04:04.This isn't a new problem and assemblies haven't been able to find

:04:05. > :04:10.a solution. Deputy Macon has been leading this review into the cost of

:04:11. > :04:14.funding for higher education and he said that even the maximum state 's

:04:15. > :04:17.grant doesn't go anywhere near far enough to cover the cost of getting

:04:18. > :04:21.a degree. He told me he has spoken a degree. He told me he has spoken

:04:22. > :04:24.to some families and they have said they are having to spend money that

:04:25. > :04:29.they have saved for their pensions and even selling the family home to

:04:30. > :04:32.send their children to university. But he believes that the benefits of

:04:33. > :04:34.getting a degree are enormous long-term for the island.

:04:35. > :04:38.I think the evidence shows that if we want to support local

:04:39. > :04:41.businesses and we want our students to reach the

:04:42. > :04:44.top of their profession, and we want to address the concerns over

:04:45. > :04:46.population growth, we have to be able to support our students into

:04:47. > :05:00.The States I tried to cut spending, not increase it? Jersey spent about

:05:01. > :05:06.a quarter of 1% of its GDP on higher education. If you compare that to

:05:07. > :05:09.countries like Latvia which spent four times as much as jersey and

:05:10. > :05:15.Northway which spends ten times as much as jersey, the Education

:05:16. > :05:18.Scrutiny Panel have said many families and students want to see

:05:19. > :05:22.some form of loan scheme. Deputy Macon says that the Treasury and

:05:23. > :05:26.education ministers just haven't been taking this problem seriously

:05:27. > :05:30.and have not done enough to resolve it. But the Assistant Education

:05:31. > :05:32.Minister Deputy Anne Pryke thinks that is unfair.

:05:33. > :05:33.We will look at the findings and report accordingly,

:05:34. > :05:36.but I think they didn't come up with really long standing

:05:37. > :05:40.and sustainable funding, because it can cost, we

:05:41. > :06:02.Deputy Macon says that a subcommittee that has been set up by

:06:03. > :06:04.the Chief Minister to look at funding for third level education

:06:05. > :06:08.needs to set a deadline and publish its terms of reference so that

:06:09. > :06:09.people can understand what it hopes to achieve.

:06:10. > :06:12.That was our reporter Julie Flanagan talking to me earlier.

:06:13. > :06:14.In other news, the father of the murdered Guernsey woman

:06:15. > :06:17.Sarah Groves says he's spoken to the man accused of

:06:18. > :06:20.The 23-year-old was stabbed to death in Kashmir in 2013.

:06:21. > :06:23.Her family fear they may never get justice after 90 court hearings

:06:24. > :06:27.But her father today revealed he's talked on the phone

:06:28. > :06:34.to her alleged killer, Dutch national Richard de Wit.

:06:35. > :06:36.He said the details of their conversation can't be shared,

:06:37. > :06:38.but described the call as "unsatisfactory".

:06:39. > :06:41.Jersey's women's football manager - and the rest of his coaching team -

:06:42. > :06:43.have resigned, saying their positions have

:06:44. > :06:47.It's a major blow to the team who are hoping to retain

:06:48. > :06:48.their Island Games gold medal this summer.

:06:49. > :06:54.For many, Jersey's women's gold was the defining moment

:06:55. > :07:02.The women's game in the island at its highest -

:07:03. > :07:04.but now at a real low, as the manager that day,

:07:05. > :07:07.Simon Petulla, and the rest of his senior coaching team,

:07:08. > :07:18.have stepped down after a falling out with JFA bosses.

:07:19. > :07:20.As a management team, we have resigned.

:07:21. > :07:22.We're not getting the support we think we deserve.

:07:23. > :07:25.I'm devastated, but it's something we think we have

:07:26. > :07:28.His decision comes a week after his wife Kerry quit

:07:29. > :07:30.as JFA vice-president, and follows the controversial

:07:31. > :07:34.cancellation of the women's Muratti against rivals Guernsey.

:07:35. > :07:36.He feels the Jersey FA should have tried

:07:37. > :07:46.This would not have happened if it was in the men's game.

:07:47. > :07:48.There's only been 20 or so Murattis for women

:07:49. > :07:52.and you can't lose the Muratti, you have to fight for it.

:07:53. > :07:57.So, with exactly 100 days to go until the Island Games,

:07:58. > :08:01.another blow to women's football in the Channel Islands.

:08:02. > :08:05.And with a friendly against the Navy just two days away, the Jersey FA

:08:06. > :08:12.will have to act quickly to find a new manager.

:08:13. > :08:14.They have appointed new local coaches.

:08:15. > :08:17.The Jersey FA have said they are disappointed

:08:18. > :08:20.with Simon's decision, and thank him for his enthusiasm and commitment.

:08:21. > :08:24.But women's football is seemingly in a mess in the islands -

:08:25. > :08:28.you have to wonder who would want the hassle of taking on the job.

:08:29. > :08:31.Tim Pryor, BBC Channel Islands News, Jersey.

:08:32. > :08:34.And Tim Pryor will be your host next Tuesday at midday

:08:35. > :08:36.on BBC Radio Jersey and BBC Radio Guernsey to debate

:08:37. > :08:39.the future of women's football in the islands.

:08:40. > :08:42.In rugby, Jersey Reds James Freeman - who's captained the team

:08:43. > :08:44.for much of this season - is joining Premiership

:08:45. > :08:48.Freeman, seen here wearing number six in the black scrum cap,

:08:49. > :08:54.has signed a two-year deal with Exeter from next season.

:08:55. > :09:01.Now let's get your weather forecast - here's David.

:09:02. > :09:07.Good evening. All this week we have been plagued with this seems like

:09:08. > :09:12.this, the file can be mist. The sunshine trying to get through. Over

:09:13. > :09:17.the next 24 hours, we will see a bit of a change. Much brighter tomorrow,

:09:18. > :09:20.some sunshine in the morning, much better visibility. It will cloud

:09:21. > :09:24.over and ten breezy later with the risk of some patchy rain overnight

:09:25. > :09:30.and into the start of the weekend. What is happening at the moment is

:09:31. > :09:33.we have got to change brought about by a cold weather front that is

:09:34. > :09:36.nudging towards us this evening and do the night to come. It takes its

:09:37. > :09:39.time but eventually it should collate that want to go through,

:09:40. > :09:42.much better visibility, a breeze, largely find the tomorrow. The

:09:43. > :09:45.of an area of high pressure on the of an area of high pressure on the

:09:46. > :09:50.weekend, all the crap that is running around the top of the area

:09:51. > :09:54.of high pressure keeps us rather grey and rather cloudy for much of

:09:55. > :09:58.the weekend ahead. This was much earlier today, the clearance moves

:09:59. > :10:02.through the south-west of England. It is moving towards us, later on

:10:03. > :10:06.this evening, we will see the guy is clear. Into the small hours of the

:10:07. > :10:11.morning, we will see the temperatures glowing then they have

:10:12. > :10:16.been. Six to seven Celsius. A brisk north-westerly wind. A largely fine

:10:17. > :10:20.day to enjoy tomorrow with a good deal of sunshine in the morning, a

:10:21. > :10:26.brisk north or north-westerly wind and quite a cool feel to the ad. 10

:10:27. > :10:31.Celsius. Some want across parts of Spain and Portugal, here we will see

:10:32. > :10:35.a change across the next 24 hours or so that cold front sweeps through.

:10:36. > :10:38.As we head into the weekend, the area of high pressure not quite

:10:39. > :10:43.close enough. Not a huge amount of wet weather on and Sunday but rather

:10:44. > :10:46.a lot of cloud on both days. That is all from me. Have a good night.

:10:47. > :10:52.That's all from BBC Channel Islands News for now.

:10:53. > :10:57.You can catch up on anything you have mist online.

:10:58. > :11:00.I'll be back with you again tomorrow evening at half six here on BBC One.

:11:01. > :11:07.there will be rain around, most occurring overnight.

:11:08. > :11:12.Good evening, quite a range of whether an offer earlier today in

:11:13. > :11:16.the north and north-west of the UK quite a lot of showers around,

:11:17. > :11:19.lively ones, little bit of sunshine in between. The best of the sunshine

:11:20. > :11:23.to be found at the other end of the country towards the south-east in

:11:24. > :11:27.Kent, lovely picture here from one of our weather watchers. A range of

:11:28. > :11:31.temperatures, too. 17 degrees for a few, on the other side of the

:11:32. > :11:34.weather front, only seven or 8 degrees. Showers in the north and

:11:35. > :11:38.west. The fresh air will win out over tonight coming in behind the

:11:39. > :11:42.cold front, which isn't bringing much rain but it will bring some,

:11:43. > :11:45.clearing away towards the continent, cold air following behind, as do the

:11:46. > :11:46.showers. Wintry weather over
