:00:11. > :00:12.Is the celebrity obsession with weight to blame

:00:13. > :00:21.for girls as young as ten going on diets in Guernsey?

:00:22. > :00:27.If you talk to even quite young children, six, 78 years old, how

:00:28. > :00:32.they feel about how they look, quite a number of them are unhappy with

:00:33. > :00:34.how they look and some would describe themselves as fat.

:00:35. > :00:37.Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands.

:00:38. > :00:41.Charities in Jersey as being encouraged to help

:00:42. > :00:48.There's concern children as young as six in Guernsey are becoming too

:00:49. > :00:50.focused on their weight, with one local eating disorder

:00:51. > :00:52.specialist saying in particular it's worrying how many ten-year-old girls

:00:53. > :01:01.A recent survey revealed a third of primary school pupils

:01:02. > :01:09.They're rich, they're famous, and, on the whole, they're thin and often

:01:10. > :01:13.But is celebrity culture making us all too obsessed with our looks?

:01:14. > :01:21.And, worryingly, is it it rubbing off on our children?

:01:22. > :01:23.Even quite young children, six, seven, eight years old,

:01:24. > :01:26.actually quite a number of them are unhappy about how they look,

:01:27. > :01:36.A number of them, shockingly enough, say that they have been on a diet.

:01:37. > :01:38.It's something nurses like Christine often come across.

:01:39. > :01:41.She mainly deals with children that are perhaps overweight but she says

:01:42. > :01:48.If parents can avoid saying that they are going on a diet,

:01:49. > :01:51.I think if they don't give those messages out.

:01:52. > :01:54.You eat food because it is nice food, that is a much better

:01:55. > :02:00.Schools like this one are doing their bit,

:02:01. > :02:06.with lessons focusing on making kids proud of their bodies.

:02:07. > :02:13.Children are open to more things, for example the use of social media,

:02:14. > :02:20.Rather than taking a negative slant, looking and comparing,

:02:21. > :02:23.we've chosen to go down the positive route of celebrating

:02:24. > :02:27.Everybody is different becuase they have different

:02:28. > :02:34.They can think differently and feel differently.

:02:35. > :02:39.I always hear lots of adults saying, "I am on a diet."

:02:40. > :02:42.Actually it is not a diet, it is just a healthy lifestyle,

:02:43. > :02:47.it is just what your lifestyle should be.

:02:48. > :02:53.And, a lesson for us all to take on board perhaps.

:02:54. > :02:55.Well, earlier today I spoke to Rosie Williams

:02:56. > :02:57.who volunteers at The Hub - a charity in Guernsey that

:02:58. > :03:00.offers support and advice to children from 11 to 18.

:03:01. > :03:11.I started by asking her if this was an issue she'd experienced.

:03:12. > :03:18.People come to us for a whole range of issues and one of the most

:03:19. > :03:24.prominent as concerns about body image and self-confidence. It can be

:03:25. > :03:27.a huge issue and I think it is often quite unspoken about so people will

:03:28. > :03:28.come and talk to us but maybe will not tell their friends or family.

:03:29. > :03:30.If so many Guernsey youngsters are concerned about their weight

:03:31. > :03:33.from a young age, would you say they're more likely to develop

:03:34. > :03:47.I think it is certainly a really higher risk. There are links between

:03:48. > :03:49.body image and eating disorders. If it is not tackled from an early age

:03:50. > :03:50.then it can definitely escalate. What advice would you give

:03:51. > :03:53.to a young girl or young man who might be concerned

:03:54. > :04:00.about their weight? I would definitely say to talk to

:04:01. > :04:07.someone about it, your friends and family, open up. If you start

:04:08. > :04:10.talking to people about it you can kind of tackle some of those issues

:04:11. > :04:11.and see if maybe some of those thoughts are quite destructive or

:04:12. > :04:12.concerning. If you don't tackle this now,

:04:13. > :04:14.how serious a problem could the island be facing

:04:15. > :04:28.in five years' time? It could be a lot more eating

:04:29. > :04:38.disorders and other issues, Laura mood, -- Lower mood, anxiety and

:04:39. > :05:01.body issues. Is this a ticking time bomb? Yes.

:05:02. > :05:04.The body of a man has been recovered from rocks at Crabby Beach

:05:05. > :05:06.in Alderney..Earlier this evening the Channel Islands Air Search

:05:07. > :05:09.and the Alderney lifeboat were called out to look for Alderney

:05:10. > :05:11.resident Keith Jones, who was reported missing

:05:12. > :05:14.Guernsey police do not believe there are any suspicious

:05:15. > :05:16.circumstances and the death is being treated as unexplained.A

:05:17. > :05:20.Formal identification has not yet been carried out .

:05:21. > :05:24.A postmortem examination is to be carried out on the body of a man

:05:25. > :05:26.recovered from the sea at Pleinmont in Guernsey.

:05:27. > :05:29.A large scale air, land and sea search was carried out over

:05:30. > :05:31.the weekend for 50-year-old Patrick Eker, who went

:05:32. > :05:33.A formal identification is expected later.

:05:34. > :05:35.The police are not treating the death as suspicious.

:05:36. > :05:38.A disciplinary hearing has heard how an ambulance station officer

:05:39. > :05:41.in Guernsey failed to follow up a 999 call from an elderly man

:05:42. > :05:45.Jason Garnham was on duty when Alan Hamilton dialled 999 -

:05:46. > :05:48.but the call was cut off and attempts to call him

:05:49. > :05:50.Procedures including logging the call and dispatching the police

:05:51. > :05:53.and ambulance were not followed through and Mr Hamilton's body

:05:54. > :05:57.The hearing in Southampton continues.

:05:58. > :05:59.Charities in Jersey are being encouraged to hire people who've

:06:00. > :06:02.been unemployed for a long time, using a States Back To Work scheme.

:06:03. > :06:04.The scheme offers companies and other groups funding

:06:05. > :06:07.for training and up to six months' salary if they take

:06:08. > :06:11.But there's some concern it doesn't suit much of the charity sector.

:06:12. > :06:19.Sammi is learning the ropes for her new admin role

:06:20. > :06:21.at a young people's charity - the Barnardo's service

:06:22. > :06:28.Previously unemployed, her salary here is being covered

:06:29. > :06:32.Without this help, the charity couldn't have afforded her.

:06:33. > :06:35.Sammi's come in and she's picked up the admin work for Plan B.

:06:36. > :06:38.She's able to do the basic admin and project workers are able to work

:06:39. > :06:41.with young people on the ground so, yeah, a huge difference.

:06:42. > :06:44.Sammi isn't the only one who's found work through this

:06:45. > :06:52.The Social Security department set the scheme up three

:06:53. > :06:55.and a half years ago, and it's so far cost

:06:56. > :06:58.It's funded roles for 150 roles for people who were previously out

:06:59. > :07:01.of work and, of those, about half had their employment

:07:02. > :07:07.extended in those placements or found work elsewhere.

:07:08. > :07:09.But, while it doesn't have exact figures, the department admits

:07:10. > :07:11.there's a relatively low take-up of the scheme among charities.

:07:12. > :07:14.They're trying to change that, but it seems they might

:07:15. > :07:19.The scheme doesn't work as well for charities as it does

:07:20. > :07:22.The charities don't always have the resources to continue

:07:23. > :07:24.employing that person, so unfortunately they take them

:07:25. > :07:32.for the short time that covers it and then they have to let them go.

:07:33. > :07:34.So can the States do anything to help?

:07:35. > :07:36.Obviously, some charities do continue employing people

:07:37. > :07:38.particularly if they've been beneficial to the organisation,

:07:39. > :07:41.It's sad if the charity can't continue with employment but,

:07:42. > :07:43.from the client's perspective, they've had valuable

:07:44. > :07:57.This particular Jersey charity has had previous

:07:58. > :07:59.success with the scheme, but even they admit finances

:08:00. > :08:02.will have to be assessed before they can commit to keeping Sammi

:08:03. > :08:09.on after the six-month funding runs out.

:08:10. > :08:12.Sport now and it's been announced that Guernsey and Jersey cricket

:08:13. > :08:14.teams will be heading to Johnannsburg later in the year

:08:15. > :08:16.for the World Cricket League Five tournament.

:08:17. > :08:19.The South African city was chosen over Jersey and the Netherlands

:08:20. > :08:24.2017 is going to be an exciting year for Guernsey cricket according

:08:25. > :08:25.to the head of the sport in the island.

:08:26. > :08:28.Jersey Reds have climbed to fifth in the Championship

:08:29. > :08:33.They beat Rotherham Titans 17-9 at St Peter.

:08:34. > :08:34.And Congratulations to Guernsey's Ladies Rugby Team

:08:35. > :08:47.They ended their season in style with an 85-0 victory over Worthing.

:08:48. > :08:50.It's the start of another week so let's see what the forecast has

:08:51. > :09:00.We have seen some sunshine today. We have seen a spell of rain but the

:09:01. > :09:06.weather front has cleared and we have clear skies. We will see a

:09:07. > :09:11.little more sunshine than today. As we had through this week, it will be

:09:12. > :09:17.a cold start, certainly the next few days, some rain at times, sometimes

:09:18. > :09:22.quite heavy. Breezy as well. It will settle down towards the end of the

:09:23. > :09:25.week. The cold front has cleared out of the way so a little bit of a

:09:26. > :09:29.breeze but largely clear skies overnight, one or two showers.

:09:30. > :09:35.Tomorrow through daylight hours it will be a much better day. It will

:09:36. > :09:41.feel cold but it should be dry with plenty of sunshine. Wednesday is a

:09:42. > :09:48.bit of a mess. Early rain followed by brightness in the afternoon and

:09:49. > :09:51.much lighter winds. Thursday, rain and merging into a heavy downpours.

:09:52. > :09:58.Some hail and thunder as well. Friday settles down, much brighter

:09:59. > :10:03.conditions and like winds. Some showers at the moment clearing

:10:04. > :10:07.through quickly on a brisk wind. Largely clear skies between the

:10:08. > :10:12.showers but even with the breeze we could get down as low as 5-6 saw it

:10:13. > :10:17.it's going to be a chilly night. One or two isolated showers tomorrow but

:10:18. > :10:21.by the time most of us get up it will be dry and bright with a lot of

:10:22. > :10:25.sunshine. Still breezy and I think it will be deceptive because you

:10:26. > :10:32.will see blue skies but it will still feel cold. Temperatures 9-10.

:10:33. > :10:35.Showers and outbreaks of brain through the middle part of the week

:10:36. > :10:37.and it settles down through Friday into the weekend and it will warm up

:10:38. > :10:39.slightly. That's your news

:10:40. > :10:40.this Monday evening. BBC Radio Guernsey and Jersey

:10:41. > :10:42.will have bulletins from six tomorrow morning and I'll be back

:10:43. > :11:04.at 6.30 tomorrow. outlook for Saturday and Sunday is

:11:05. > :11:12.for something dry and settled, sunny spells but a bit on the cool side.

:11:13. > :11:20.This week we are starting off with a taste of winter. This is Paul and

:11:21. > :11:25.maritime air, it has come from a long way north and will push in lots

:11:26. > :11:28.of showers. The last of any mild air gets swept away with the cloud.

:11:29. > :11:36.Tonight we have showers mostly across the northern half of the UK,

:11:37. > :11:40.which will turn wintry and that means more snow, particularly across

:11:41. > :11:41.Scotland and Northern Ireland, perhaps northern
