:00:09. > :00:10.Could permeable pavements be the answer to stop

:00:11. > :00:16.We are looking to identify areas where we could see the greatest

:00:17. > :00:18.benefit for the retrofit of sustainable drainage

:00:19. > :00:24.Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands.

:00:25. > :00:28.A true story of love, defiance and courage

:00:29. > :00:39.during the occupation gets its Channel Islands premiere.

:00:40. > :00:41.The leaders of Jersey and Guernsey's governments have

:00:42. > :00:45.voiced their support for people involved in the Westminster

:00:46. > :00:50.Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, tweeted that

:00:51. > :00:52.his "thoughts are with all those caught up in the attack",

:00:53. > :00:55.in which four people, including a police officer

:00:56. > :01:00.and the man thought to be the attacker, have died.

:01:01. > :01:04.Guernsey's most senior politician says he "recognises the vital role"

:01:05. > :01:06.played by the emergency services "at times like this".

:01:07. > :01:08.Both islands have confirmed staff at their London offices

:01:09. > :01:16.Water bosses in Guernsey believe building extensions and paving over

:01:17. > :01:20.driveways is making flooding worse in the island.

:01:21. > :01:23.The process called "urban creep" leads to more water ending

:01:24. > :01:27.up in sewer systems, rather than soaking into the ground.

:01:28. > :01:29.They're now urging residents and developers to use more

:01:30. > :01:34.sustainable drainage systems, as Jessica Banham reports.

:01:35. > :01:37.The sudden downpour of hail and heavy rain took everyone

:01:38. > :01:43.In July 2014, drains in St Peter Port were simply

:01:44. > :01:48.overwhelmed, as too much water flooded the sewer system.

:01:49. > :01:51.Now, Guernsey Water think this may be the answer.

:01:52. > :01:53.It might look like an ordinary pavement, but it's actually

:01:54. > :01:56.permeable, meaning rain water can soak through into the ground,

:01:57. > :01:59.rather than heading overland and into the sewers.

:02:00. > :02:07.It's an example of a sustainable drainage system, and the company

:02:08. > :02:10.thinks it will help prevent flooding in the future.

:02:11. > :02:12.But not everyone's convinced - this bar on the Pollett was flooded

:02:13. > :02:16.Long-term, obviously, it seems like a good idea for anyone

:02:17. > :02:19.outside St Peter Port, but with St Peter Port

:02:20. > :02:21.being built up already, the flow of water coming

:02:22. > :02:23.from buildings is already going to be massive when we get

:02:24. > :02:28.these freak weather events, and what's going to happen

:02:29. > :02:31.is that the water is still going to go into the drains,

:02:32. > :02:34.flow into the sewers and flood the buildings along the Pollett.

:02:35. > :02:37.But water bosses say they're not only urging builders to use

:02:38. > :02:40.this permeable paving in new developments -

:02:41. > :02:43.they also hope to replace existing paving in town.

:02:44. > :02:46.What we're looking to do is to introduce sustainable drainage

:02:47. > :02:48.as a retrofit into town in particular areas,

:02:49. > :02:51.and what we're looking at is the areas of greatest benefit

:02:52. > :02:53.where we'll get most out of our investment.

:02:54. > :02:55.The new advice has been welcomed by the building industry,

:02:56. > :02:58.who say sustainable drainage schemes have already started

:02:59. > :03:02.being implemented, as seen here in Clos Barbier.

:03:03. > :03:06.But there are concerns it could take time to see the benefits.

:03:07. > :03:09.You will start to see small improvements obviously

:03:10. > :03:12.in the first year or so, but, in terms of having

:03:13. > :03:14.a significant impact, I would have thought it's

:03:15. > :03:21.Guernsey Water acknowledge this won't be a quick fix, but hope that,

:03:22. > :03:24.by working alongside the island's builders and architects,

:03:25. > :03:28.ultimately they can make flooding like this a thing of the past.

:03:29. > :03:32.Jessica Banham, BBC Channel Islands News, Guernsey.

:03:33. > :03:35.Two major developments in St Helier have been given

:03:36. > :03:38.250 homes overlooking the park in Gas Place,

:03:39. > :03:40.and a third new building at the Finance Centre.

:03:41. > :03:48.There'll be a lot more building work to come in St Helier,

:03:49. > :03:50.following today's double dose of planning approval.

:03:51. > :03:52.While finishing touches are being put to this first building

:03:53. > :03:55.at the Finance Centre on the Esplanade, work has started

:03:56. > :03:59.on the second, and a third has got the go-ahead today.

:04:00. > :04:03.It'll be five storeys, with underground parking.

:04:04. > :04:06.Plans for a housing development at Gas Place have been rejected

:04:07. > :04:09.before, but today a new version won approval for about 250 homes,

:04:10. > :04:17.The buildings will be one or two storeys lower

:04:18. > :04:22.than originally intended, and I think that is the key issue

:04:23. > :04:25.for residents on the street, so there is less impact

:04:26. > :04:30.It could still be blocked if an appeal is made

:04:31. > :04:32.in the next few weeks, but, if there's no objection,

:04:33. > :04:39.Luxmy Gopal, BBC Channel Islands News, Jersey.

:04:40. > :04:42.Work could start soon on a new site for businesses facing eviction

:04:43. > :04:47.The companies have until the end of the year to move on.

:04:48. > :04:50.This old vinery is one of two that have been identified as possible

:04:51. > :04:56.Today, planners gave the go-ahead at an open planning meeting

:04:57. > :05:00.for the necessary work and change of use.

:05:01. > :05:02.With any planning permission, it is a three-year permission,

:05:03. > :05:08.so we will have to instigate that as soon as possible,

:05:09. > :05:10.but also, if you are a reasonable landowner with a reasonable

:05:11. > :05:12.application for the clearance of a glasshouse,

:05:13. > :05:16.The body of a man found off Pleinmont in Guernsey over

:05:17. > :05:19.the weekend has been confirmed as Patrick Eker.

:05:20. > :05:21.The 49-year-old's disappearance sparked a major search

:05:22. > :05:25.after he was reported missing on Saturday.

:05:26. > :05:28.Police say his death is not being treated as suspicious

:05:29. > :05:32.and an inquest will be held at a later date.

:05:33. > :05:35.A film based on the true story of love, defiance

:05:36. > :05:38.and the courage of one Jersey woman during the occupation had its

:05:39. > :05:42.Another Mother's Son tells the story of Louisa Gould,

:05:43. > :05:45.a shop keeper in St Ouen who sheltered an escaped Russian

:05:46. > :05:51.Earlier this evening, there was a special showing

:05:52. > :06:00.at the Jersey War Tunnels, and Emma Chambers had a ticket.

:06:01. > :06:06.And an error couldn't be more appropriate. The tunnels are a

:06:07. > :06:08.striking reminder of the hardships endured...

:06:09. > :06:10.Yes, the location of this film premiere could not

:06:11. > :06:14.The tunnels are a striking reminder of the hardships endured by

:06:15. > :06:16.slave workers during the German occupation here in Jersey.

:06:17. > :06:19.One witnessed by many islanders - some who just couldn't stand

:06:20. > :06:23.Her actions made her a war hero, and now a film sensation.

:06:24. > :06:26.Any mother would do the same for love.

:06:27. > :06:33.Saving "Another Mother's Son" - the heroic actions of Louisa Gould,

:06:34. > :06:36.adapted into a film by her great-niece.

:06:37. > :06:40.I thought, wow, this is a fantastic story,

:06:41. > :06:43.and I'm so proud of what these people did, and around that time

:06:44. > :06:45.I started to think somebody's got to do something with this,

:06:46. > :06:47.because otherwise it's going to get forgotten.

:06:48. > :06:49.You know, small documentaries not showing...

:06:50. > :06:52.Most people don't actually seem to know the story.

:06:53. > :06:55.But I was nervous about it, because you don't want to mess it up.

:06:56. > :06:58.You feel a responsibility to get it right.

:06:59. > :07:03.But this isn't just a sad tale of war and survival -

:07:04. > :07:06.it's one of love, which cost Louisa's life, and now it will be

:07:07. > :07:11.If I'm ever lucky enough to have another film made,

:07:12. > :07:15.I will never again have quite the personal connection

:07:16. > :07:21.I am just delighted to be able to watch on home turf with people

:07:22. > :07:28.Actor Jenny Lecoat speaking to me earlier today.

:07:29. > :07:35.One of the stars of it joins me now, actor Julian Kostov.

:07:36. > :07:37.You play Bill, the Russian slave workers saved by Louisa Gould.

:07:38. > :07:40.What about the film made you want to be part of it?

:07:41. > :07:45.I did not know about the occupation that happened at all,

:07:46. > :07:52.and it was a remarkable story to tell.

:07:53. > :07:55.A wonderful character and so many emotional scenes,

:07:56. > :07:58.in very different areas of human emotion, like fear,

:07:59. > :08:03.I could not have asked for a better character to play.

:08:04. > :08:06.It is a dream come true and an honour for me to tell

:08:07. > :08:14.It wasn't filmed in Jersey, so how does it feel

:08:15. > :08:20.to be in the island now, where it all happened?

:08:21. > :08:23.I am honoured that I was invited, and I actually wanted to come

:08:24. > :08:28.here on my own anyway, because I have imagined this place

:08:29. > :08:31.in my heart and mind so many times during the film-making,

:08:32. > :08:35.and it is amazing finally to come and see it, and overwhelming to see

:08:36. > :08:41.the tunnels as well and know what my character went through.

:08:42. > :08:48.If you want to see the courageous story of Louisa Gould,

:08:49. > :08:51.the film will be showing in cinemas across the British Isles

:08:52. > :08:57.Now let's take a look at the weather.

:08:58. > :09:03.Not everywhere, granted, and showers haven't been too far away.

:09:04. > :09:06.This is a lovely shot on Guernsey, taken with the blue skies

:09:07. > :09:10.Now, things are a little different for tomorrow.

:09:11. > :09:12.We've got a lot more cloud coming our way.

:09:13. > :09:14.It has the potential to bring us some showers,

:09:15. > :09:17.and perhaps even some more persistent rain for a time,

:09:18. > :09:22.The area of low pressure is on the move.

:09:23. > :09:24.This is its midday position tomorrow.

:09:25. > :09:27.By the middle of Friday, it's beginning to sink southwards.

:09:28. > :09:29.One weather front very close by means another rather

:09:30. > :09:31.cloudy day on Friday, but, as it moves south,

:09:32. > :09:35.Brisk, easterly winds, but hopefully a bit of sunshine to enjoy

:09:36. > :09:41.Showers are possible through the night to come.

:09:42. > :09:43.Quite a cold night for all of us, too.

:09:44. > :09:45.I think the overnight temperatures across the Channel islands will get

:09:46. > :09:47.well into single figures at four or five Celsius.

:09:48. > :09:50.Tomorrow we have briefly some brightness in the morning,

:09:51. > :09:52.but, on the whole, there is a lot of cloud.

:09:53. > :09:56.Again, some sunshine, before more general cloud turns up,

:09:57. > :09:58.and the afternoon looks like it could be damp,

:09:59. > :10:02.10 Celsius the top temperature, and a brisk north-easterly wind

:10:03. > :10:06.As we head into the weekend, though, there is a lot

:10:07. > :10:10.Some fine weather to enjoy as we move through this

:10:11. > :10:13.Rather dreary briefly on Friday morning before

:10:14. > :10:17.A keen wind on Saturday and Sunday, and temperatures should get up

:10:18. > :10:25.Finally, tomorrow is World Meteorological Day,

:10:26. > :10:27.and if you want to know more about it,

:10:28. > :10:38.You can go to the WMO website, which is:

:10:39. > :10:45.That's your news this Wednesday evening.

:10:46. > :10:47.BBC Radio Guernsey and Jersey will have bulletins from 6am

:10:48. > :10:52.tomorrow morning, and I'll be back at 6.30pm tomorrow night.
