:00:28. > :00:28.need to pay more attention to the welfare of teachers and teachers

:00:29. > :00:31.emotional well-being. Good evening and welcome

:00:32. > :00:33.to the late news from BBC Making sure the Channel

:00:34. > :00:38.Islands are not forgotten Raising standards, teaching local

:00:39. > :00:46.history, and responding to care inquiry findings -

:00:47. > :00:49.these are some of the priorities for Jersey's Education Department

:00:50. > :00:51.in the coming years revealed It says, despite having to make

:00:52. > :00:59.savings, it CAN deliver. While unions welcome the plans,

:01:00. > :01:01.they're highlighting the pressures Education in Jersey has been

:01:02. > :01:11.in the spotlight a lot lately, from issues around free

:01:12. > :01:13.nursery places to funding Today, the department

:01:14. > :01:16.laid out its progress over the past two years,

:01:17. > :01:27.and its priorities for the next two. These include changing the

:01:28. > :01:32.curriculum so children are taught more about Jersey's own history and

:01:33. > :01:36.politics, developing a new code of practice for special needs and

:01:37. > :01:39.disabilities. Following recommendations for the inquiry into

:01:40. > :01:43.the Jersey care system and raising standards in schools as well as the

:01:44. > :01:46.way they aren't measured to improve people's results. Against a

:01:47. > :01:48.background of having to make savings.

:01:49. > :01:50.While some union reps welcome the business plan,

:01:51. > :01:52.they say teachers' mental health should be a priority.

:01:53. > :01:55.In order to make this a success, they've got to have a happy

:01:56. > :01:58.workforce and they really need to pay more attention to the welfare

:01:59. > :02:00.of teachers and to teachers' emotional well-being,

:02:01. > :02:08.The issue of stress in the industry was highlighted in a recent

:02:09. > :02:10.survey of Jersey teachers, with concerns about workload

:02:11. > :02:16.The department say they're taking the responses seriously.

:02:17. > :02:19.There were two key areas, one was, as you mentioned, workload,

:02:20. > :02:21.which is why we're working with teachers to see

:02:22. > :02:28.The second is training, they'd like more than we currently

:02:29. > :02:34.provide, so we're responding to both those issues.

:02:35. > :02:37.The department's confident it can follow through its business plan,

:02:38. > :02:39.despite the challenge of having to tighten its belt

:02:40. > :02:46.Flags have been flying at half mast in the Channel Islands today

:02:47. > :02:52.in sympathy for those affected by the Westminster terror attack.

:02:53. > :02:54.It was requested flags on public buildings be flown

:02:55. > :03:00.Guernsey's senior politician has today written to the Prime Minister

:03:01. > :03:05.Meanwhile, security at the ports in Guernsey and Jersey

:03:06. > :03:06.has been stepped up, although the threat

:03:07. > :03:14.A former ambulance station officer in Guernsey has been suspended

:03:15. > :03:17.for a year after failing to follow up an aborted 999 call from a man

:03:18. > :03:25.Alan Hamilton phoned St John Ambulance but the call was cut off.

:03:26. > :03:27.The then station officer Jason Garnham has today been

:03:28. > :03:40.Jessica Banham has been following this story,

:03:41. > :03:49.Hamilton was a groundsman when he called St John's Ambulance Service

:03:50. > :03:54.in July 20 14. That call was cut off and the next day he was found dead

:03:55. > :03:59.in the groundsman's at. This week Jason Gunn, in a supervisory

:04:00. > :04:03.officer, has been the subject of a officer, has been the subject of a

:04:04. > :04:06.conduct and competent hearing at the health and care professions Council

:04:07. > :04:10.over the way the call was handled. The hearing heard the member of

:04:11. > :04:14.staff who took the initial call tried to call Mr Hamilton back twice

:04:15. > :04:21.but it was unsuccessful. She said when she asked Mr Gan whether to

:04:22. > :04:30.continue trying, he told her to stop panicking. What did he say happened?

:04:31. > :04:35.Mr Garnham says he followed correct procedures but today the committee

:04:36. > :04:40.panel found he fails to send an ambulance or police to the scene and

:04:41. > :04:44.failed to get the call logged correctly. It's worth noting the

:04:45. > :04:47.hearing heard none of these failings are thought to have contributed to

:04:48. > :04:53.the death of Mr Hamilton but the panel found Mr Garnham's behaviour

:04:54. > :04:56.did constitute misconduct and as a result he has been suspended from

:04:57. > :05:03.the Council register for a year. During that time he will be able to

:05:04. > :05:05.practice as a paramedic. -- won't be able to practice as a paramedic.

:05:06. > :05:07.The inquest has opened into the death of Valerie Jehan

:05:08. > :05:09.who went missing from Jersey's north coast

:05:10. > :05:11.The seventy-five year old's handbag was found on cliffs

:05:12. > :05:14.near Devil's Hole and her body later discovered three miles off Noirmont.

:05:15. > :05:16.Today's inquest heard her death is not suspicious -

:05:17. > :05:21.and was adjourned waiting for results of the post-mortem exam.

:05:22. > :05:23.Concerns have been raised about the number of late deliveries

:05:24. > :05:28.The aim is to deliver all letters by 2pm each day.

:05:29. > :05:30.The consumer group PostWatch says it's been made aware of instances

:05:31. > :05:40.It's now looking into the situation to assess the extent of the problem.

:05:41. > :05:46.We recognise there will be exceptional circumstances, so if it

:05:47. > :05:54.is due to fault, then we can't alter the weather. But our understanding

:05:55. > :05:57.is that there hasn't been those sort of circumstances beyond Guernsey

:05:58. > :05:59.Post's control. We don't really know the reason why some of them are a

:06:00. > :06:01.late. A report says the Channel Islands

:06:02. > :06:04.relationship with the UK must be protected and their voices heard

:06:05. > :06:06.in Brexit negotiations. The House of Lords has been

:06:07. > :06:08.investigating the implications of Brexit for the Crown

:06:09. > :06:11.Dependencies. It identifies concerns

:06:12. > :06:12.for the finance industry and the ability to attract EU

:06:13. > :06:15.citizens to live and It also questions the islands'

:06:16. > :06:22.abilities to trade freely with the UK and Europe,

:06:23. > :06:24.as Lord Kinnoull Farming and fishing are both things

:06:25. > :06:32.which the UK will be discussing with the EU and because of the close

:06:33. > :06:35.relationship between the UK and the Channel Islands, these

:06:36. > :06:39.things will need to be So the position is

:06:40. > :06:44.completely clear for the Channel Islands

:06:45. > :06:48.as well as for the UK. What are the implications

:06:49. > :06:51.for the island's finance industries? The relationship between

:06:52. > :06:55.the financial services industry is pretty symbiotic with the City

:06:56. > :06:58.of London, that is actually a good thing because it's clearly very high

:06:59. > :07:01.up on the list of things to be dealt with with the EU in

:07:02. > :07:08.the Brexit negotiations. You are calling on the UK

:07:09. > :07:11.Government to make sure the How confident are

:07:12. > :07:13.you that their voices We are confident at the moment

:07:14. > :07:18.the process is working We heard from the Chief Minister

:07:19. > :07:23.both of Guernsey and Jersey that the impression was that

:07:24. > :07:26.interaction between the UK Government and the Government of

:07:27. > :07:32.the Channel Islands was going well. How can the islands

:07:33. > :07:34.make sure they are I am sure the Chief

:07:35. > :07:42.ministers will work very hard indeed to make sure

:07:43. > :07:45.their voices are heard with the UK Government ministers,

:07:46. > :07:47.but they also will note those we as the scrutiny committee

:07:48. > :07:50.in the House of Lords and the scrutiny committee

:07:51. > :07:52.in the House of Commons, are extremely interested in making

:07:53. > :07:54.sure the whole UK family, the interests are advanced

:07:55. > :08:02.and properly considered. Senior politicians in Guernsey

:08:03. > :08:04.and Jersey have welcomed Tomorrow is Red Nose Day and we're

:08:05. > :08:10.all being urged to do Well today one Guernsey businessman

:08:11. > :08:16.has stepped up to that challenge - he's handcuffed himself

:08:17. > :08:34.to his restaurant for 24 hours. Everybody does charities, they go

:08:35. > :08:37.and climb things, run, what I do every day is one around, I've got

:08:38. > :08:41.five restaurants, I'm always walking around. I thought to go completely

:08:42. > :08:46.opposite of what is natural for me, to move around all the time. It's to

:08:47. > :08:50.stop myself, and that's what I'm most worried about, being able to

:08:51. > :08:54.sit there and actually work. I wonder if he's getting any sleep.

:08:55. > :08:56.We've had some heavy rain this evening lets find

:08:57. > :08:59.out if there is more on the way with David.

:09:00. > :09:05.We are looking forward to some fine weather at the weekend. Before we

:09:06. > :09:08.get there, chance of further outbreaks of rain. We've had some

:09:09. > :09:13.today, this was the grey skies we saw across Jersey today. Looks like

:09:14. > :09:18.we'll continue to see the risk of patchy rain around overnight. By

:09:19. > :09:23.tomorrow it's moving away from us. A much brighter day tomorrow. Some

:09:24. > :09:27.sunshine. But keen easterly winds. Quite a lot of cloud on the

:09:28. > :09:31.satellite picture. Wrapped around the area of low pressure. A lot of

:09:32. > :09:36.this cloud will head west over the next 24 hours. This is the setup for

:09:37. > :09:42.earlier this evening. The band of cloud and rain spreading south west

:09:43. > :09:49.down towards the northern tip of Spain and Portugal. Skies should

:09:50. > :09:52.clear behind that. Something to look forward to. The risk of spits of

:09:53. > :09:55.light rain and drizzle through the night but the main body of rain is

:09:56. > :10:00.now beginning to move away from us and later on tonight, apart from a

:10:01. > :10:04.few splashes of rain, these guys will begin to clear. Overnight

:10:05. > :10:09.temperatures will get down to around four or 5 degrees. Quite a chilly

:10:10. > :10:12.night, and tomorrow we've got some sunshine to enjoy. Patchy clouds

:10:13. > :10:16.will float by but should remain largely dry. The winds picked up and

:10:17. > :10:23.eventually we'll see those winds becoming strong from the north-east

:10:24. > :10:27.to the afternoon with 1112 degrees as the maximum temperature. The

:10:28. > :10:29.weekend forecast is windy on Saturday, possible gale force winds

:10:30. > :10:33.through the morning, then those winds easing into the afternoon.

:10:34. > :10:37.Slightly more cloud around on Sunday with fine weather to look forward to

:10:38. > :10:42.for the week ahead. A bit chilly at night and daytime temperatures of

:10:43. > :10:48.around 12 or 13 degrees. Have a good night. To let you know, there will

:10:49. > :10:53.be more fun from Red Nose Day on this very programme when I'll be

:10:54. > :10:59.back tomorrow night at 6:30pm. Until then, have a safe, good evening.

:11:00. > :11:02.part of the weekend. 1415 degrees. Still quite breezy. Here's Thomas

:11:03. > :11:05.with the national picture.
