:00:51. > :00:57.It comes as a new report from the Ministry of Justice urges

:00:58. > :00:59.the UK Government to clarify the position of the Crown

:01:00. > :01:01.Dependencies during Brexit negotiations.

:01:02. > :01:07.Guernsey and Jersey are neither part of the UK nor the EU.

:01:08. > :01:09.But they are part of Europe's Customs Union, allowing

:01:10. > :01:16.But this formal relationship with the EU will end with Brexit.

:01:17. > :01:19.So work's under way to ensure the Crown Dependencies

:01:20. > :01:23.are represented in the tough negotiations ahead.

:01:24. > :01:25.The main priorities for the Channel Islands are

:01:26. > :01:27.protection of the financial services from EU blacklisting,

:01:28. > :01:29.retention of the Common Travel Area and

:01:30. > :01:31.continued export opportunities in agriculture, fisheries

:01:32. > :01:40.This company in St Peter Port provides consultancy services

:01:41. > :01:44.Its boss says the interests of Guernsey and the UK

:01:45. > :01:49.If you look at the investment management fees being earned in the

:01:50. > :01:51.UK from managing people's money internationally, approximately 10%

:01:52. > :01:55.And when you consider how big the industry is,

:01:56. > :02:06.Today Guernsey's most senior politician admitted that financial

:02:07. > :02:11.blacklisting is the biggest single threat from Brexit.

:02:12. > :02:14.I think probably the most important is self evidently the point they

:02:15. > :02:17.make in relation to blacklisting, that the UK will not be at the

:02:18. > :02:22.Instead of there being 28 nations, with the UK speaking and

:02:23. > :02:28.acting on our behalf, there will be 27.

:02:29. > :02:32.What that is likely to mean is we are going to have to ensure we up

:02:33. > :02:38.Today the Justice Select Committee published this report, recommending

:02:39. > :02:41.the UK Government clarifies what happens in Brexit negotiations

:02:42. > :02:43.when its interests differ from the Channel Islands.

:02:44. > :02:46.The Committee's Chairman says it'll be important to keep up the pressure

:02:47. > :02:56.I think the sense is so far the engagement with the British

:02:57. > :02:57.Government is very good, one of the key

:02:58. > :02:59.recommendations in our report is

:03:00. > :03:02.to remind them that has to be kept up right the way through the

:03:03. > :03:09.And tomorrow the Islands will hope the Prime Minister remembers them

:03:10. > :03:11.when she sits down to begin to negotiate divorce

:03:12. > :03:18.A car and electrical items were stolen from a house in Jersey,

:03:19. > :03:20.while the homeowners were asleep upstairs.

:03:21. > :03:23.Thieves broke into the home in Gorey Village in the early

:03:24. > :03:27.A laptop, two guitars, cameras and car keys were stolen.

:03:28. > :03:29.The person's car was later found submerged on Ouaisne beach.

:03:30. > :03:38.Jersey police want anyone with information to contact them.

:03:39. > :03:40.A fraudster who conned the States of Guernsey out of ?2.6 million

:03:41. > :03:49.has been ordered to pay compensation of ?68,000.

:03:50. > :03:51.John Woodhatch is currently serving a five-year jail sentence

:03:52. > :03:53.for scamming the States Treasury by pretending to be

:03:54. > :03:58.from Lagan Construction who were working on Guernsey's

:03:59. > :04:01.Woodhatch has six months to pay the compensation,

:04:02. > :04:07.or another year will be added to his jail term.

:04:08. > :04:10.More people in Jersey under the age of 75 die of cancer

:04:11. > :04:14.compared to people of the same age in England.

:04:15. > :04:16.That's according to figures released by the Statistics Department.

:04:17. > :04:19.Half of all cancer deaths here are in patients aged 75

:04:20. > :04:26.or under, with lung cancer being the biggest killer.

:04:27. > :04:29.Earlier I spoke to our reporter Julie Flanagan who has been

:04:30. > :04:35.Well some areas are better than others.

:04:36. > :04:37.Overall compared to the average for England, the Statistics Unit

:04:38. > :04:40.found many more people in Jersey are living beyond the age of 75

:04:41. > :04:43.but cancer is a big factor in whether or not people

:04:44. > :04:50.Lung cancer is significantly worse in Jersey than in England

:04:51. > :04:58.with the disease here compared to 59 per 100,000

:04:59. > :05:02.people in England but other cancers, including pancratic

:05:03. > :05:09.Cancer has overtaken heart disease and stroke as the major

:05:10. > :05:13.cause of death among people aged 75 and under?

:05:14. > :05:16.Yes, but as Marguerite Clarke from the States Statistics Unit says

:05:17. > :05:18.that is to be expected in a population with

:05:19. > :05:36.we have a greater proportion of deaths they are living longer and

:05:37. > :05:45.are likely as they age. Cancer is now our main cause of death in

:05:46. > :05:47.These figures are important because our policy and decision

:05:48. > :05:51.makers can use this information to decide where they should invest

:05:52. > :05:57.public money and see what has worked well in the past.

:05:58. > :06:05.there is the alcohol side of our strategy. I am not giving neighbours

:06:06. > :06:11.did not understand why we wanted to do it. It wasn't about raising

:06:12. > :06:18.taxation, it was about a healthy community.

:06:19. > :06:20.So the Minister's message is that information and education

:06:21. > :06:22.is working and long term, we'll all benefit.

:06:23. > :06:25.A plan to make all over-75 year olds in Jersey exempt from TV licence

:06:26. > :06:28.fees has been rejected by the States.

:06:29. > :06:31.A politician said the BBC should cover the costs,

:06:32. > :06:35.But the move was defeated 22 votes to 19.

:06:55. > :06:57.It's the BBC's first ever licence fee advert.

:06:58. > :07:00.The fee is no longer ?58 a year - it's around ?150.

:07:01. > :07:02.But today in the States, the question was who should

:07:03. > :07:07.In the UK, the BBC will be covering the licence fee costs for everyone

:07:08. > :07:09.over the age of 75 - it'll be phased

:07:10. > :07:12.In Jersey, the States pays for licence fees

:07:13. > :07:14.for those eligible over 75 - it's means-tested.

:07:15. > :07:16.In the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the States closed their "free

:07:17. > :07:19.licence fee for over 75s" scheme six months ago, to save money.

:07:20. > :07:22.But after negotiations, the BBC will pick up the tab

:07:23. > :07:25.from the year 2020 for over-75-year-olds across

:07:26. > :07:26.the Channel Islands - only if they're eligible under

:07:27. > :07:32.A Jersey politician argued in the States today that this

:07:33. > :07:38.It's up to the BBC to apply the same rules to all over 75s

:07:39. > :07:43.They should'nt be discriminating against a minority in Jersey, or

:07:44. > :07:49.in the other crown dependencies for that matter.

:07:50. > :07:53.I'm from England anyway so I was always used to having free

:07:54. > :08:00.television so I feel for these people.

:08:01. > :08:02.If they don't get it there missing out.

:08:03. > :08:06.I think it should be free and available to everyone and

:08:07. > :08:14.less they feel they've got plenty of money and can well afford it.

:08:15. > :08:25.I suppose at the end of the day it may

:08:26. > :08:28.be easier, never mind about what you've got what you haven't.

:08:29. > :08:30.But the States narrowly voted against renegotiating the BBC deal,

:08:31. > :08:33.with Ministers arguing the deal is likely to change in the UK

:08:34. > :08:37.Bus fares in Jersey will increase from the 3rd of April.

:08:38. > :08:40.A single journey will increase by five pence to ?1.55

:08:41. > :08:44.and a student price will increase by two pence.

:08:45. > :08:47.Liberty Bus say the rise is in line with inflation.

:08:48. > :08:50.However, the bus operator is freezing the price

:08:51. > :09:00.of its monthly and annual fares for the fourth year running.
