:00:00. > :00:28.There has been a dramatic increase in the number of teenagers taking

:00:29. > :00:31.inappropriate pictures. Good evening and welcome to the late

:00:32. > :00:34.news from BBC Channel Islands. Also tonight: Union workers may

:00:35. > :00:37.consider strike action over controversial pension

:00:38. > :00:42.changes in Guernsey. It is not only illegal,

:00:43. > :00:45.but also very dangerous - that's the warning to young people

:00:46. > :00:48.by Jersey Police, who have seen The number of under-16s taking

:00:49. > :00:54.and sharing indecent images of themselves has more than tripled

:00:55. > :00:58.since last year. The digital age we live

:00:59. > :01:03.in has changed the way The increasing number of online

:01:04. > :01:07.social apps is making it easier than ever before to chat,

:01:08. > :01:11.flirt or send naked images It's illegal for under-16s

:01:12. > :01:17.and a growing concern for Jersey Police, who have seen

:01:18. > :01:21.cases rise from one But that figure has

:01:22. > :01:27.dramatically increased to 17 It appears now that young people,

:01:28. > :01:39.and there are many many cases of it and it's under-reported as well,

:01:40. > :01:41.there's absolutely no doubt about that, will send an indecent

:01:42. > :01:44.image of themselves and we just really need to get the message

:01:45. > :01:47.across that, one, technically they are committing an offence but,

:01:48. > :01:50.two, it's around the fact that that image will probably

:01:51. > :01:54.never really go away. And it seems the drive among

:01:55. > :01:57.teenagers to have a huge online following increases the risk that

:01:58. > :02:00.that private picture will not only go viral but end

:02:01. > :02:05.up in the wrong hands. Taking Instagram for example,

:02:06. > :02:08.it's not uncommon for us to see a young person of 12 or 13

:02:09. > :02:15.with 50,000 followers. Young people have to be aware really

:02:16. > :02:18.of who they are talking too and quite often they are not,

:02:19. > :02:22.which is a real concern for us. How severe has some of the cases got

:02:23. > :02:25.when it comes to young people It can have absolutely

:02:26. > :02:32.devastating consequences. There are cases where there's been

:02:33. > :02:35.some significant self-harm and even in the worse case scenarios suicide

:02:36. > :02:39.as a result of people That's quite serious then and quite

:02:40. > :02:44.alarming to think that young people are finding themselves

:02:45. > :02:49.in these situations. It's absolutely frightening

:02:50. > :02:52.and that's why the advice we are giving is in the main please

:02:53. > :02:56.please do not do it. Although it is illegal,

:02:57. > :02:59.Jersey Police say they have taken the view that it is not

:03:00. > :03:02.in the public interest to criminalise under-16s

:03:03. > :03:03.caught sexting. But they fear it will be a growing

:03:04. > :03:07.problem, as more online social Earlier today, I spoke to Sarah Grey

:03:08. > :03:19.from the charity Love Matters, which advises schoolchildren

:03:20. > :03:22.on the topic of sexting and asked It is primarily secondary school age

:03:23. > :03:30.people and I would say it is usually from the age of 12,

:03:31. > :03:36.13, our main age group that we see because we are trying to get

:03:37. > :03:39.in there before this starts happening, to equip them

:03:40. > :03:43.to respond when it does. We would say, think before you send

:03:44. > :03:50.and remember what you send or share can become public or permanent,

:03:51. > :03:57.so if you wouldn't want to print it and show it to everybody,

:03:58. > :04:00.perhaps it is something Also, it is about all of us

:04:01. > :04:07.being responsible internet users, so if you see something online,

:04:08. > :04:10.think about how you would feel if it was you, and if you would not

:04:11. > :04:14.like it shared around, What message do

:04:15. > :04:23.you have for parents? I think it is about using moments

:04:24. > :04:27.such as these, having these conversations,

:04:28. > :04:31.opening dialogue with young people and making sure you have a culture

:04:32. > :04:36.of open communication at home so you can communicate and have

:04:37. > :04:38.conversations with young people Ask them what they think about it

:04:39. > :04:44.and why they think people do it and how they think people can

:04:45. > :04:47.make positive choices. BBC Radio Jersey will be discussing

:04:48. > :04:50.this tomorrow morning from 7.00am and we will have part two of this

:04:51. > :04:53.exclusive report looking at the further implications

:04:54. > :04:55.and the impact of sexting tomorrow A 59-year-old woman was rescued

:04:56. > :05:04.by helicopter at the weekend after falling 200 feet down

:05:05. > :05:07.cliffs in Jersey. The woman escaped with relatively

:05:08. > :05:10.minor injuries and is now She was at Grosnez cliffs

:05:11. > :05:18.when she fell down onto the rocks. The leader of Britain's biggest

:05:19. > :05:21.trade union says strike action may be necessary in Guernsey,

:05:22. > :05:23.as a dispute continues over changes Len McCluskey is visiting

:05:24. > :05:30.the Channel Islands as he seeks re-election

:05:31. > :05:34.as General Secretary of Unite. Legal proceedings are due

:05:35. > :05:37.to re-commence next month over Thousands of people protesting

:05:38. > :05:46.on the streets of Guernsey over controversial plans

:05:47. > :05:49.to cut their pension benefits. After some negotiations the majority

:05:50. > :05:53.of unions accepted the terms and their members were moved

:05:54. > :05:56.from a final salary to a career average pension scheme,

:05:57. > :06:00.and that was that. In the room behind me the leader

:06:01. > :06:05.of Britain's biggest trade union Len McCluskey says his union didn't

:06:06. > :06:11.accept the terms and that strike Once the meeting was over,

:06:12. > :06:16.some Unite members told me You hope that people can get

:06:17. > :06:23.round the negotiation table, but at the moment

:06:24. > :06:34.is is a legal issue. The States can alter their contracts

:06:35. > :06:37.without agreements, and you can't do Unite's leader says he doesn't

:06:38. > :06:42.understand the States' It is annoying to me and it

:06:43. > :06:49.puzzles me why many of the workers' rights that covered UK workers

:06:50. > :06:55.or the rest of Europe are not Does the Chief Minister think that

:06:56. > :07:03.Guernsey workers are worth less? Legal proceedings are due

:07:04. > :07:05.to re-commence next The States of Guernsey say it

:07:06. > :07:09.would be inappropriate to comment Jersey Reds have made history again

:07:10. > :07:19.as they booked a place in the British and Irish Cup final

:07:20. > :07:23.in Cork at the end of the month. The Reds won 25-17 against

:07:24. > :07:26.Championship leaders London Irish. Our sports editor, Tim Pryor,

:07:27. > :07:32.watched the action in Reading. Jersey arrived at the imposing

:07:33. > :07:35.24,000 seater Madejski Stadium But on this huge occasion

:07:36. > :07:41.for the club they didn't appear daunted by the ground

:07:42. > :07:44.or the opponents as Jordan Davies' try helped the Reds

:07:45. > :07:50.to a 10-7 lead by half time. Still much work to do though,

:07:51. > :07:52.despite Nick Haining's score, as Irish edged back ahead

:07:53. > :07:55.going into the closing stages. With the chance to play

:07:56. > :07:58.for silverware on the line, and desperate to avoid a semifinal

:07:59. > :08:01.defeat for the second season in a row, Jersey

:08:02. > :08:04.rose to the challenge. Nick Selway's late try

:08:05. > :08:06.and Callum Sheedy's composure with the boot saw the islanders

:08:07. > :08:10.25-17 ahead and the The confidence from last week

:08:11. > :08:17.in just knowing we could get ourselves over the line carried us

:08:18. > :08:21.through today I think because, as you know, in semifinals

:08:22. > :08:24.and knock-out rugby, it doesn't matter if you win by one

:08:25. > :08:27.point or ten points, Now Harvey Biljon's side will be

:08:28. > :08:32.away at Munster in less than three weeks' time for a final

:08:33. > :08:34.and the chance to make I am asking for all the fans,

:08:35. > :08:45.the first time we've ever done it, I am immensely proud of the team

:08:46. > :08:48.and the preparation, So the Reds go marching

:08:49. > :09:13.on as their brilliant season Good evening. Got some fine weather

:09:14. > :09:17.to look forward to later on this week, so the weather for the week

:09:18. > :09:22.ahead looks quite promising. There is a weather front and some mist and

:09:23. > :09:28.fog to get rid of first. That is coming in overnight tonight and is

:09:29. > :09:32.into tomorrow. And misty and damp start, then mostly dry and then some

:09:33. > :09:39.sunshine. A couple of weather prompts across us tonight. They

:09:40. > :09:42.leave a lot of moisture so it is a slow improvement tomorrow, then this

:09:43. > :09:50.area of high pressure will come across states. That will stay for

:09:51. > :09:54.Thursday and Friday, so fine unsettled weather. A bit chilly at

:09:55. > :09:59.night, maybe even to mist and fog first thing in the morning. Some

:10:00. > :10:04.patchy rain first thing tonight that is slow to keep away from us. It

:10:05. > :10:07.will be murky and misty for a time posting tomorrow morning before

:10:08. > :10:11.things start to improve. We will have to wait until later in the day

:10:12. > :10:16.before finally we start to see the clouds begin to break and clear

:10:17. > :10:21.away. 11 degrees is the top temperature. The real warmth is in

:10:22. > :10:27.parts of Spain and Portugal, temperatures well above 25 degrees

:10:28. > :10:36.here. Cooler conditions were heading from the Atlantic to France over the

:10:37. > :10:39.next few days. After tomorrow, it is fine, dry a bit warmer. Later in the

:10:40. > :10:45.week we will see temperatures up to 15 or 16 degrees. Cool on Wednesday

:10:46. > :10:49.despite the sunshine. Quite a bit of cloud around on Thursday, then the

:10:50. > :10:52.cloud will break on Friday. It is essentially a dry story apart from,

:10:53. > :10:53.of course, tomorrow. That's your news

:10:54. > :10:55.this Monday evening. BBC Radio Guernsey and Jersey

:10:56. > :10:57.will have bulletins from 6.00am tomorrow morning and I'll be back

:10:58. > :11:00.at 6.30pm tomorrow night. is remaining settled. It will feel

:11:01. > :11:15.fairly warm and dry as well. Good evening. Some rain spreading in

:11:16. > :11:19.across the Atlantic overnight. As it does so we will see some fresh

:11:20. > :11:26.Atlantic air following on from behind. The pollen levels will drop

:11:27. > :11:31.but the temperatures will also drop. Some rain to go with the cloud. It

:11:32. > :11:35.is moving its way from west to east. Drying up in not an island and

:11:36. > :11:38.eventually it will dry up in most of Scotland. The fresher Atlantic air

:11:39. > :11:39.is following on
