:00:03. > :00:06.This is East Midlands Today. Tonight we're live from Bombardier

:00:06. > :00:14.in Derby where almost 1,500 workers have been told they're to lose

:00:14. > :00:18.their jobs. It's a hammer blow for the City and many are now asking

:00:18. > :00:22.how long can Britain's last trainmaker survive?

:00:22. > :00:31.And here in the studio, I'll be assessing the political impact, why

:00:31. > :00:36.did this happen and where does Bombardier and Derby go from here?

:00:36. > :00:38.My genuine anxiety is that Bombardier's will decide their

:00:38. > :00:42.there is not a future for them in the UK.

:00:42. > :00:45.In other news tonight, a tragic accident - how the owner of the

:00:45. > :00:48.King Cobra Sanctuary was killed by his own snake.

:00:48. > :00:58.And holy amazing - the Cape Crusader's all flying show is

:00:58. > :01:09.

:01:09. > :01:13.Good evening. Welcome to Litchurch Lane in Derby, the home of

:01:14. > :01:19.Bombardier. There has been trained making in this city since the 1840s.

:01:19. > :01:23.It is part of Derby's crowd engineering and industrial heritage.

:01:23. > :01:29.For how much longer? There are fears about this factory's short-

:01:29. > :01:34.term future. Today's announcement means half of the work force here

:01:34. > :01:38.will be leaving. Almost 1,400 people looking for work in

:01:38. > :01:43.difficult economic times. In a moment I will be speaking to the

:01:43. > :01:46.leader of Derby City Council and the man who runs this 88 acre site.

:01:46. > :01:50.First, a report from Mike O'Sullivan.

:01:50. > :01:55.A signal from a railway man that said it all. The night shift was

:01:55. > :02:00.the first to be told that 1,400 jobs were being lost at Bombardier

:02:00. > :02:06.in Derby. More workers were briefed throughout the day. This is going

:02:06. > :02:11.to be the end of the train building industry in Britain. Everybody is

:02:11. > :02:15.doom and gloom today. I blame the Government. They gave the contract

:02:16. > :02:25.to Germany. We are all upset. We feel like the Government have let

:02:25. > :02:29.us down. Hoping that we get another contract. Fingers crossed.

:02:29. > :02:34.Bombardier says it hasn't got enough for his current workforce of

:02:34. > :02:39.3,000 in Derby. Four of the five production lines come to a halt by

:02:40. > :02:45.September. Two weeks ago Bombardier lost the Government's 1.4 billion

:02:45. > :02:53.pound Thameslink contract to his German rival, Siemens. Today,

:02:53. > :02:57.Bombardier announced 1,400 job cuts. 983 contracts staff are to go. 446

:02:57. > :03:01.permanent jobs will be lost. Many of them skilled engineers. The

:03:01. > :03:05.company said, if it had won the Thameslink contract, no permanent

:03:05. > :03:10.staff will be leaving at all. were the preferred bidder for

:03:10. > :03:15.Thameslink, those engineers will be working on the design and, step --

:03:15. > :03:22.concept. They would be fully employed today. They would be no

:03:22. > :03:26.threat to their job? No threat. Deflated, saddened. Darren Barber

:03:26. > :03:31.had told me how we will affect his family. He is a staff member but

:03:31. > :03:37.his son is a contract worker. Both of them could be at the job.

:03:37. > :03:42.market is going to be flooded. Core staff like my itself will hang on

:03:42. > :03:46.to the end. I would be last in the queue to find a job. Is there going

:03:46. > :03:51.to be anything out there? I don't think so. Bombardier says contract

:03:51. > :03:56.staff would have benefited from Thameslink. They would have been

:03:56. > :04:06.shared out to short-term employees with the potential of having them

:04:06. > :04:07.

:04:07. > :04:12.back. A? Now hangs over the future of this factory. -- A? Macro hangs

:04:12. > :04:20.over the future of this factory. With me is the leader of Derby City

:04:20. > :04:25.Council. A black day I presume, what is your reaction?

:04:25. > :04:30.devastating decision as far as Derby is concerned. Half the

:04:30. > :04:35.workforce will be made redundant and the real possibility that we

:04:35. > :04:41.will lose this train making site in this city, bringing to the end 170

:04:41. > :04:45.years of train manufacturing in Derby. In future, every train, tram

:04:45. > :04:49.and Underground train at the UK purchases will come from abroad.

:04:49. > :04:57.understand you have attempted to contact David Cameron to talk about

:04:58. > :05:02.the issues. What has been this -- the response? If all I have had

:05:02. > :05:11.back are to acknowledge rents of three letters. I am extremely

:05:11. > :05:17.disappointed. -- and acknowledgements. Nick Clegg was

:05:17. > :05:21.here with the Cabinet at describing Derby as a powerhouse of the UK. I

:05:21. > :05:26.am a Conservative but those words are becoming hollow now in the

:05:26. > :05:30.light of today's announcements. I am critical of the contract

:05:30. > :05:34.assessment process because no economic impact assessment took

:05:34. > :05:41.place as part of the evaluation of that contract. How can it be that

:05:41. > :05:48.this contract is the best value for the British taxpayer if the costs

:05:48. > :05:55.of making these people redundant would all stop you get a flavour of

:05:55. > :06:00.the sort of political storm that is brewing over this issue. Form Ahmad

:06:00. > :06:05.Khomeini he is an in the studio. -- for more on that.

:06:05. > :06:11.Europe bans giving contracts on the basis of nationality. Germany

:06:11. > :06:15.routinely Awards 90 % of its rare work to German workers. In France,

:06:16. > :06:21.it is 100 %. John Denham, Labour's shadow business Secretary thinks we

:06:21. > :06:25.have to change the way we play the game. We have to have an industrial

:06:25. > :06:29.policy so we can build up our manufacturing industry. I look at

:06:30. > :06:35.Germany and France and they might - - find ways of doing that. Why

:06:35. > :06:40.can't we do the same? If John Hess asked Business Secretary, Vince

:06:40. > :06:45.Cable, where the Government rejected Bombardier's bid in the

:06:45. > :06:50.first place? In this case, the former Labour Government drew up a

:06:50. > :06:55.narrow tender terms for this contract which led to the current

:06:55. > :07:01.transport secretary to make the decision he did. He had no choice.

:07:01. > :07:06.I don't want to minimise the fact that this is a serious play it --

:07:06. > :07:12.bloke to Derby and the workers. I want to do what I can to help.

:07:12. > :07:15.Today we are setting up a task force and a senior executive of

:07:15. > :07:23.Rolls-Royce to keep the skills boys together to help Derby ever come

:07:23. > :07:27.this blow. I want to investigate how future public procurement can

:07:27. > :07:33.operate within European walls, but at the same time it take account of

:07:33. > :07:39.the importance of British suppliers. The so much for the blame game.

:07:39. > :07:45.What next? What of the future. Will this damage investment in our

:07:45. > :07:48.region? I have seen companies come and go at Litchurch Lane. I have

:07:48. > :07:53.found Bombardier aid to be the most consistent in terms of their

:07:53. > :08:00.support for the work force, investment, through lean times as

:08:00. > :08:06.well as good times. I do wonder, and it would do everything I can to

:08:06. > :08:10.keep the company in the UK. I think we are pushing our luck. I don't

:08:10. > :08:15.think it will put people off investing because we have great

:08:15. > :08:22.skills in the region. Bombardier is one of them. I don't think it will

:08:22. > :08:28.put people off. However it is a blow to the region. Whatever

:08:28. > :08:37.happens, no one knows tonight if it would be in time to save Britain's

:08:37. > :08:47.last train builder. That now have to Dominic in Derby. -- back now.

:08:47. > :08:55.With me is France's pay NASA who is president of the passenger division.

:08:55. > :09:01.-- Frances Power NASA. We can't understand the decision.

:09:01. > :09:06.Could she bear some responsibility in terms of losing his contract, --

:09:06. > :09:11.? We will be happy to share the blame if we know why we had lost

:09:11. > :09:16.the bid. During our feet back, we were given no specific information

:09:16. > :09:21.which allowed us to make that judgment. For we are hearing of the

:09:21. > :09:24.BBC is hearing, there were issues raised about the cost per carriage

:09:24. > :09:28.they are you offering was higher than your rivals and there were

:09:28. > :09:34.problems with suppliers. Would it surprise you to know this

:09:34. > :09:39.information is coming out? For I am surprised by this. The two points I

:09:40. > :09:44.would make, worldwide in the last five years, when Bob RDA --

:09:44. > :09:50.Bombardier has gone with Siemens, this is the first time we have lost

:09:50. > :09:56.out to them. We won 70 % of the contracts in the UK with the same

:09:56. > :10:02.EU rules and the same competition. The civil servants in London over

:10:02. > :10:06.saw these bids. Are they uncaring? What do you think of them? They

:10:06. > :10:15.could have taken a broader view in the way the economic assessment was

:10:15. > :10:21.carried out on this project. final question, has this place,

:10:21. > :10:26.what is left of it, has it got a future beyond 2014 or beyond the

:10:26. > :10:29.end of this year? We are not in a position where we can say.

:10:29. > :10:35.Bombardier is carrying out an extensive review of our operations

:10:35. > :10:39.and until that is completed, the future of the site is uncertain.

:10:39. > :10:49.That is it for now from Bombardier. I will be back later in the

:10:49. > :10:54.programme. Back now to the studio. It was a tragic accident, the death

:10:54. > :10:59.of a man regarded as an expert in King Cobras, beaten by one of his

:10:59. > :11:03.pet snakes. Luke Yeomans died -- died at his home which he turned

:11:03. > :11:08.into a century for his reptiles. A coroner recorded a verdict of

:11:08. > :11:13.accidental death today. A month ago, we filmed with him at his home in

:11:13. > :11:18.Eastwood. Luke Yeomans dedicated his life to

:11:18. > :11:24.the King Cobra. He created a sanctuary for them behind his home.

:11:24. > :11:29.On 29th June, he was bitten. The inquest heard his partner, seen

:11:29. > :11:35.here with the stripy top, saw him holding a hosepipe to his own. --

:11:35. > :11:40.on. She knew he had been bitten. She gave him adrenalin and tried to

:11:40. > :11:44.resuscitate him but could see he was dead. The coroner said it was a

:11:44. > :11:49.tragic case where a man passionate about snakes and King Cobras had

:11:49. > :11:53.devoted his life to them. She read a statement from his daughter. It

:11:53. > :11:58.said, dad lived for his next and was particularly passionate about

:11:58. > :12:03.King Cobras. He was fully aware of the possibility he could be written.

:12:03. > :12:07.I took comfort that he died doing something he loved so much. East

:12:07. > :12:13.Midlands Today filmed with him in May. He spoke of his dedication to

:12:13. > :12:20.his animals and how he was aware of the risks. He had been bitten

:12:20. > :12:26.before. I have had a few nasty next and one or two cases where I have

:12:26. > :12:31.had to get in touch with the School of Tropical medicine to advise on

:12:31. > :12:40.using anti- venom. He knew the risks and thought it was worth it

:12:40. > :12:44.Controversial plans for a waste incinerator in Derby are back on

:12:44. > :12:49.the table. A High Court judge says that an inspector was wrong last

:12:49. > :12:53.year to block the proposals for a waste tree man plant at Sinfin. It

:12:53. > :12:56.followed a fierce campaigner against the plans. There will now

:12:56. > :13:01.be another planning inquiry. More money than originally planned

:13:01. > :13:05.could be spent redeveloping Nottingham's Broadmarsh Centre. The

:13:05. > :13:10.city council says it believes up to 12 million will be spent

:13:10. > :13:13.transforming it by the owners, Westfield. The first phase of an

:13:13. > :13:16.estimated 500 million project involves updating Drury Hill and

:13:16. > :13:23.the centre's Middle Pavement entrance.

:13:23. > :13:27.Plenty more to come. We will have a soggy weather forecast.

:13:27. > :13:37.And find out about some of my favourite things in Nottinghamshire.

:13:37. > :13:44.

:13:44. > :13:49.It is a new era for the home of Leicester City Football Club. From

:13:49. > :13:53.today, the Walkers Stadium is changing its name to the King Power

:13:53. > :13:58.Stadium. The rebranding is all about the new owners and the club's

:13:58. > :14:02.new Thai chairman. What do the fans make of the change?

:14:02. > :14:07.They have signed some new players, it laid the new turf and for the

:14:07. > :14:13.new season, there is even a new name. It has been on the shares for

:14:13. > :14:18.a season, now it will be all over the ground. -- on the shirts. It

:14:18. > :14:22.has become the King Power Stadium. Walkers Stadium is synonymous with

:14:22. > :14:27.Leicester but obviously, King Power Stadium have new sponsors and that

:14:27. > :14:32.has got to be great for the club. do not know if I am that keen on it.

:14:32. > :14:37.But I will get used to it. It is a complete takeover. But as long as

:14:37. > :14:41.they keep bringing the money in and the players. Will people know where

:14:41. > :14:47.the King Power Stadium is? If they might think it is in Thailand.

:14:47. > :14:53.club says it reflects the owner's commitment to the club and that its

:14:53. > :15:02.partnership with Walkers will continue. Sponsorship of stadiums

:15:02. > :15:07.never lasts for ever. The dreams for the owners is Bob them to score

:15:07. > :15:14.high. We are told the stadium will be rebranded in time for the pre-

:15:14. > :15:17.season friendly with Real Madrid at the end of the month.

:15:17. > :15:21.Nottinghamshire's fire service could spent half-a-million pounds

:15:21. > :15:25.trying to reduce its carbon for print. The county's fire authority

:15:25. > :15:30.is considering installing solar panels, wind turbines and ground

:15:30. > :15:35.source heat pumps in its stations. She says it would hate save money

:15:35. > :15:39.in the long term. -- help save money.

:15:39. > :15:44.A kerbside recycling scheme in part of Leicester is to be extended

:15:44. > :15:47.across the city. Traditional green recycling boxes are being replaced

:15:48. > :15:53.with orange sacks because they take a much wider range of ways. A

:15:53. > :15:58.recent trial led to I 30% increase in the amount collected each week.

:15:58. > :16:03.Talking about recycling, the old bat man is back and it is big. With

:16:03. > :16:13.an awful lot of "kerpow" the caped crusader is on stage with a show of

:16:13. > :16:16.

:16:16. > :16:19.What makes you proud of where you live? Tonight, we begin a journey

:16:19. > :16:24.around our counties through the eyes of some of our local radio

:16:24. > :16:29.presenters. This week, BBC Radio Nottingham's Mark Dennison tells us

:16:29. > :16:36.what he thinks is the pride of the county of Nottinghamshire.

:16:36. > :16:41.Today I have come to one of my favourite places in Nottingham.

:16:41. > :16:47.Wollaton Hall. This is a place that everyone knows. I remember spending

:16:47. > :16:53.many a happy Sunday-morning fitting the leaves in the park with my son.

:16:53. > :16:57.Now he is a teenager. It is a great place for a stroll around the lake,

:16:57. > :17:00.a picnic, or watching the famous deer.

:17:00. > :17:04.I have been coming here for years and the great thing is, there is

:17:04. > :17:14.always something new to do. On the last Sunday of each month, you can

:17:14. > :17:23.

:17:23. > :17:29.Welcome to Nottingham's Galleries of Justice Wright in the heart of

:17:29. > :17:35.the town. A fantastic place to bring the kids. I sometimes forget

:17:35. > :17:37.this place. Set in Nottingham's Centre, on the site of the Old

:17:37. > :17:43.Court House and Dale, it gives a pretty authentic taste of what life

:17:43. > :17:48.was like as a criminal hundreds of years ago. If you are brave enough,

:17:48. > :17:51.you can take part in a mock trial, have a guided tour with all sorts

:17:51. > :18:01.of outlaws and if you are really unlucky, you might end up getting

:18:01. > :18:08.locked up. From incarceration, to the great outdoors. This is where I

:18:08. > :18:14.love to come for some peace and quiet. The Grantham Canal. It runs

:18:14. > :18:23.through three counties, some 33 miles long. You can take in

:18:23. > :18:29.teashops, some fantastic pubs, you can cycle ought stroll along with

:18:29. > :18:37.your dog. They are even places way you can bring a canoe and have a

:18:37. > :18:43.paddle. This is the beauty of Nottinghamshire. Peace and quiet,

:18:43. > :18:53.fantastic. We have all got somewhere just like this right on

:18:53. > :18:55.

:18:55. > :19:00.I feel quite peaceful after that. Time for sport. I am ready for

:19:00. > :19:04.tomorrow afternoon at Trent Bridge. It is nice to have international

:19:04. > :19:11.cricket back there. It is a must- win game for England against Sri

:19:11. > :19:14.Lanka. 2-1 down. A third defeat would mean the whole one day series

:19:14. > :19:19.is lost when Dent. But at Trent Bridge, there is still a spark

:19:19. > :19:25.about England. After a grey start to the series,

:19:25. > :19:29.two defeats mean that the Trent Bridge won their means it has some

:19:29. > :19:33.drama to it. We know we have got to win the next

:19:33. > :19:39.two games to win the series. I think we are more than capable of

:19:39. > :19:43.doing it. We need to replicate the form we had a week ago. We need to

:19:43. > :19:46.try to put the last two games to the back of our minds. We are

:19:46. > :19:50.proving to people because this is why we are runners up in the World

:19:50. > :19:55.Cup, but not just because we played on the sub-continent, but we are a

:19:55. > :20:01.pretty good cricket team. There are some specific questions about the

:20:01. > :20:07.team, for our three Nottinghamshire players. Can Stuart Broad find true

:20:07. > :20:17.form? He has got a firing has about him because you need that in fast

:20:17. > :20:26.bowlers. I do not want to see my bowlers stroking kittens. Will

:20:26. > :20:33.cynic but I'll get a game? -- will Samit Patel get a game. Or will

:20:33. > :20:39.Graeme Swann's form be matched by beating? I would rather be taking

:20:39. > :20:46.winning games. I cannot argue with the way it is coming out of my hand.

:20:46. > :20:55.The England goodies are being laid out at the ground. Graeme Swann

:20:55. > :21:00.cannot resist bigging up his county. As a is, we are stuck with other

:21:00. > :21:04.guys. I am expecting to run a big total here. It is a fantastic run

:21:04. > :21:09.with a great atmosphere and the best place to play cricket in the

:21:10. > :21:13.country. Home is where the heart is. It is nearly sold out at Trent

:21:13. > :21:18.Bridge. Some tickets will be available on the date. As Bobby

:21:18. > :21:22.Robin, they need one more win to guarantee a home quarter-final in

:21:22. > :21:32.the Twenty-20. They will have to fight for it at all staff. They

:21:32. > :21:35.have had a good start. -- fight for it at Worcester.

:21:35. > :21:39.The Hibernian chairman has said that Forest are on dangerous ground

:21:39. > :21:44.and do not have permission to speak to Colin Calderwood. Nothing to

:21:44. > :21:49.negotiate, apparently. One more bit of good news from

:21:49. > :21:54.Forest. Julian Bennett has joined Forest.

:21:54. > :22:01.David Nugent is thought to be high on the wanted list. And Derby are

:22:01. > :22:05.waiting to hear that look Bani's move to Portsmouth is complete -- 8

:22:05. > :22:07.Luke Varney. Heir result in need of European

:22:07. > :22:11.Paralympic Swimming Championships to date. There has been a gold

:22:11. > :22:16.medal for Nottinghamshire's Sam Hynd. In the same event, his

:22:16. > :22:21.younger brother, Ollie, one silver, just three seconds behind him. We

:22:21. > :22:26.will hear from both of them tomorrow.

:22:26. > :22:31.We are a cracking area for sport, aren't we ate!

:22:32. > :22:36.They have already been sightings for Batman films at Wollaton Hall.

:22:36. > :22:41.Now it seems the Dark Knight is back but this time as part of a new

:22:41. > :22:47.live stage show, all based on the original comics. It tells the story

:22:47. > :22:57.of how Robin met the great trick crusader. Our reporter has had a

:22:57. > :22:58.

:22:58. > :23:02.sneaky peek at the signs -- behind the scenes at the rear parcels.

:23:02. > :23:06.What do have all been waiting for! For the first time, the story of

:23:06. > :23:13.Batman and Robin has been transformed into when Arena shows.

:23:13. > :23:18.The Dark Knight, there is a 42 strong cast and they are currently
