:00:04. > :00:06.This is East Midlands Today with Kylie Pentelow and me, Dominic

:00:06. > :00:13.Heale. Tonight - the safety fears that

:00:13. > :00:18.keep children cooped up at home. Unlike their grandparents, one in

:00:19. > :00:22.five has never played in fields of farmland. You try to tell their

:00:22. > :00:26.children about the freedom you have done everything. It's hard for them

:00:26. > :00:30.to understand because they've not known it.

:00:30. > :00:35.Also tonight, a man filmed walking in the early hours, close to where

:00:35. > :00:39.a young mother was murdered. It is a significant and I urge the public,

:00:39. > :00:42.if they know who this person is, please give us a ring and help us

:00:42. > :00:46.with the inquiry. Past Derby County is hoping for a

:00:46. > :00:52.good result, saving jobs at Bombardier.

:00:52. > :01:02.And taking some knocks, scaling new heights and having a ball at a

:01:02. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:10.Welcome to the programme. First tonight: how free are your children

:01:10. > :01:12.or grandchildren? New research has revealed that many children are

:01:12. > :01:17.denied the freedom to play outside because of their parents' fears

:01:17. > :01:20.over safety. A charity, the National Children's

:01:20. > :01:25.Bureau, found that one in five children has never played in fields

:01:25. > :01:28.and on farmland, far fewer than their parents and grandparents.

:01:28. > :01:38.Our reporter James Roberson has been to meet three generations of

:01:38. > :01:41.the same family in Derby to find out more.

:01:41. > :01:45.Outside their grandad so house, the younger grand children play on

:01:45. > :01:49.their bikes. This is what this youngest generation is used to,

:01:49. > :01:55.only being allowed to play on their own within sight of the family's

:01:55. > :01:59.houses which are close by. It is a huge change since 65 year-old Dave

:01:59. > :02:04.was a lad growing up. In the early 50s, he would happily Rome on his

:02:04. > :02:09.bike, up to 10 miles from his home. By the 70s and 80s, when his sons

:02:09. > :02:14.were growing up, they were only allowed to go to a nearby park on

:02:14. > :02:18.their own. Now their children, aged 14 down to seven, have grown up

:02:18. > :02:22.with only the street outside being considered safe. It was a different

:02:22. > :02:28.world. He tried to tell the children about the freedom you had

:02:28. > :02:34.and everything. They've not know it themselves. It was a lovely world

:02:34. > :02:40.then. Do you worry about being saved? Yeah, a little bit. The

:02:40. > :02:44.people around here, fell in gangs and carry weapons around with them.

:02:44. > :02:48.The family now escort their children to the park, to events

:02:48. > :02:56.like this Sunday, designed to help children enjoy the outdoors with

:02:56. > :03:01.their children. We were not allowed to go too far. Our parents always

:03:01. > :03:06.knew we were at the park. It was so. It is not as safe now to let our

:03:06. > :03:12.kids out. We have to bring our children and here and Mollet am am

:03:12. > :03:17.off whilst they are playing. Children like to be outside, they

:03:17. > :03:22.like to be well to activities with or without parents. Sometimes it is

:03:22. > :03:26.nice for them to experiment without parents. Anything that gets them

:03:26. > :03:33.out and about, doing things, using their minds to do things his

:03:33. > :03:36.reimport and in a child's development. Play is essential.

:03:36. > :03:40.Playing under the watchful eye of a parent is the reality for many

:03:41. > :03:44.children these days. But not for thousands of Scouts and

:03:44. > :03:54.Guides gathered for their annual jamboree in Leicestershire. And our

:03:54. > :03:55.

:03:55. > :03:59.reporter Jo Healey is there too. As you can see from all of those

:03:59. > :04:02.tense over there, here in Leicestershire, thousands and

:04:02. > :04:06.thousands of children are staying well away from their families and

:04:06. > :04:13.homes all week. They are doing loads of activities. What are you

:04:14. > :04:21.doing? We have got climbing, zip wire, Mountain bought Ding, sailing,

:04:21. > :04:26.kayaking, everything really. There has been the order water fight!

:04:26. > :04:30.They say kids are over-protective. Have the children here been up for

:04:30. > :04:35.it? Definitely. They have all loved having a go and try new things. No

:04:35. > :04:39.one has not wanted to get involved and statin. Everyone has been

:04:39. > :04:43.jumping on and having a go. important to you think it is that

:04:44. > :04:47.children have a go? It is so important to try new things out and

:04:47. > :04:53.get the opportunity to try things that you would not usually get to

:04:54. > :04:57.at home. That is how you came into climbing. Yes, I came in 2001 as a

:04:57. > :05:02.Brownie and tried it. I loved it and joined a club. Then it went

:05:02. > :05:06.from there. And just what do you reckon children get out of the sort

:05:06. > :05:10.of thing? The opportunity to try new things and make new friends,

:05:10. > :05:14.and have fun while they are doing it. Great. You cannot get better

:05:14. > :05:24.and that. Later, I will be finding out just what the children here

:05:24. > :05:26.

:05:26. > :05:29.Thank you, Becky. We'll be back with you later. And we like to hear

:05:29. > :05:33.your views. Do you think children have less freedom today? Let us

:05:33. > :05:36.know how you used to spend the long summer holidays. You can send us a

:05:36. > :05:45.message by Twitter or by email and we'll read some of them out later

:05:45. > :05:49.in the programme. You're watching East Midlands Today.

:05:49. > :05:57.Still to come: the family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan hear

:05:57. > :06:00.tributes to his bravery - as a Police have released CCTV pictures

:06:00. > :06:04.of a man they believe may have vital information about the murder

:06:04. > :06:08.of a woman in Nottingham. The body of Caroline Coyne was

:06:08. > :06:15.found between two houses in the St Ann's area of the city just over a

:06:15. > :06:19.week ago. Angelina Socci reports. The 28 year-old woman, a mother of

:06:19. > :06:25.two children, was found dead on 23rd July. Her body was discovered

:06:25. > :06:28.here, and she died from head injuries. Today, Nottinghamshire

:06:28. > :06:33.police have released these pictures of a man walking in the area in the

:06:33. > :06:38.early hours of that morning. Officers say he is wide, around 6

:06:38. > :06:44.ft tall and you can see he has a backpack and light coloured shoes.

:06:44. > :06:48.If someone is watching television and sees the CCTV, recognises the

:06:48. > :06:51.person, allowed her son to give us a call. If there is anyone out

:06:51. > :06:56.there that recognises the image and thinks they know who it is, awarded

:06:56. > :07:00.them to give us a call. There are still a lot of unanswered questions.

:07:00. > :07:04.A missing trainer worn by Caroline still has not been found. Officers

:07:04. > :07:08.are also following up information gathered in the early hours of

:07:08. > :07:12.Saturday morning when they stopped cars and buses near to where she

:07:12. > :07:22.was found a week earlier. Now they are hoping that this man may also

:07:22. > :07:25.have vital information that can help the murder investigation.

:07:25. > :07:35.Next tonight, the worker left with a fear of heights and the need for

:07:35. > :07:38.several operations after he fell 15 feet through a factory roof.

:07:38. > :07:41.As Simon Hare reports, the company involved today pleaded guilty to

:07:41. > :07:46.breaching health and safety rules and was fined 10,000.

:07:46. > :07:51.There was a big bang, like a crack, and the next thing, as on the floor.

:07:51. > :07:57.Michael fell 15 ft on to textiles equipment. He had been working on

:07:57. > :08:01.the roof. He was left needing six skin graft operations. I did not

:08:01. > :08:08.dare I had done that to my back. I thought I had banded. I could see

:08:08. > :08:12.blood down my arms and down my head. Two years on, the contractor or

:08:12. > :08:18.from Mansfield today admitted breaching health and safety rules.

:08:18. > :08:22.Derby magistrates fined the firm 10,000 and ordered it to pay more

:08:22. > :08:25.than 5,000 costs. The court heard there were some safety bores on the

:08:25. > :08:31.roof to spread the load of people walking on them but they did not

:08:31. > :08:37.have got rails and through flights have not been covered. We have 35

:08:37. > :08:41.fatalities every year from work at Hyde. With workers are a big

:08:41. > :08:45.proportion of that. Several thousand people have life-changing

:08:45. > :08:49.injuries from falling through all of industrial rooms every year.

:08:49. > :08:54.court heard that the company deeply regrets the accident and Mr Hawkins

:08:54. > :08:58.will be in line for compensation for the injuries he suffered.

:08:59. > :09:07.cannot go up Heights, and scared of them now. I never used to be scared

:09:07. > :09:14.of heights. If fire and stood still for too long, I cannot do it

:09:14. > :09:17.because my Back's seizes up. -- If I am stood still.

:09:17. > :09:20.The former leader of Derby City Council has pleaded not guilty to

:09:21. > :09:24.assaulting his ex-wife. Conservative councillor Harvey

:09:24. > :09:27.Jennings, seen here in the dark blue suit with his new partner, is

:09:27. > :09:32.alleged to have assaulted Jane Jennings on the 3rd of May - just

:09:32. > :09:36.days before this year's local elections when he retained his seat.

:09:36. > :09:39.The trial will take place at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

:09:39. > :09:44.Police have begun an investigation after a woman's body was discovered

:09:44. > :09:48.in a car in a field in Derbyshire. Officers were called to the field

:09:48. > :09:51.off Wilne Lane in Long Eaton, after a report of a car on fire. The

:09:51. > :09:57.woman is thought to be in her 30s. Police say they're not treating her

:09:57. > :09:59.death as suspicious. The Department of Health has

:09:59. > :10:02.praised the way King's Mill Hospital in Sutton in Ashfield has

:10:02. > :10:04.cracked down on hospital acquired infections. The Sherwood Forest

:10:04. > :10:09.Hospitals trust says strict measures have led to King's Mill

:10:09. > :10:16.being free of the MRSA superbug for over a year. Staff say all patients

:10:16. > :10:19.are screened when they arrive. Next tonight - he was awarded one

:10:19. > :10:23.of the highest military honours for his part in rescuing wounded

:10:23. > :10:29.comrades. Today, four years after his death, part of an army training

:10:29. > :10:32.centre was named after Sergeant Craig Brelsford.

:10:32. > :10:34.Family and friends attended the ceremony at the Catterick Garrison

:10:34. > :10:42.in Yorkshire where the Nottinghamshire soldier trained, as

:10:42. > :10:47.Paul Bradshaw reports. Putting on of the medals of a

:10:47. > :10:54.fallen hero, Sue Brailsford prepares for a ceremony marking

:10:54. > :10:58.their courage of her son who was killed and Afghanistan in 2007.

:10:58. > :11:04.of the number of sold his but have been killed, that Craig has been

:11:04. > :11:08.remembered, and very proud. He was awarded the Military Cross

:11:08. > :11:11.posthumously after trying to save his colleagues. Today, his family

:11:11. > :11:15.returned to Catterick Garrison almost 12 years to the day after

:11:15. > :11:21.Craig started his training here to see an accommodation block named in

:11:21. > :11:25.his memory. He was the perfect example of what we look for in a

:11:25. > :11:31.senior non-commissioned officer. His biggest priority was looking

:11:31. > :11:37.after has sold us. He was clearly a very brave man. He performed

:11:37. > :11:41.extremely capably operations. new facility has cost 60 million

:11:42. > :11:47.and it is hoped great legacy will inspire the next generation. He is

:11:47. > :11:53.a good example to new recruits come through this place. All of our new

:11:53. > :11:57.crew recruits come to this place and this is the perfect example of

:11:57. > :12:06.what they should be aspiring to be in their careers. I don't know how

:12:06. > :12:11.to put it into words, to be honest. I am really honoured that his name

:12:11. > :12:15.has been put on of these blocks as a remembrance. Although he gave his

:12:15. > :12:22.life for thousands of miles away, there is now a permanent memorial

:12:23. > :12:27.to Craig closer to home. Car parking charges at hospitals in

:12:27. > :12:30.Leicester are set to double in price. Among the proposals to be

:12:30. > :12:33.discussed at a board meeting of the NHS Trust tomorrow, are plans to

:12:33. > :12:38.increase a one hour parking ticket from a pound, to two pounds thirty.

:12:38. > :12:44.-- 2.30. Staff permits could also go up. The new charges would end

:12:44. > :12:47.the Trust's subsidising of parking. In just one day the police in Derby

:12:47. > :12:51.have stopped almost a hundred people for dangerous driving or for

:12:51. > :12:53.having unsafe vehicles. Drivers in Chaddesden were cautioned for a

:12:53. > :13:03.range of offences including not wearing seat belts, using hand held

:13:03. > :13:06.mobile phones or for having un- roadworthy cars.

:13:06. > :13:09.One of the region's major tourist attractions has won a Green Flag

:13:09. > :13:18.Award. Rutland Water received the top gong for being well maintained,

:13:18. > :13:21.well managed and for having excellent facilities. Set in more

:13:21. > :13:24.than 4,000 acres of open countryside it's a haven for

:13:25. > :13:28.wildlife and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

:13:28. > :13:30.Elm trees are making a come back in the East Midlands after millions

:13:31. > :13:36.died from Dutch Elm Disease. The outbreak, particularly the big one

:13:36. > :13:39.in the 1970s, meant they all but disappeared from our landscape.

:13:39. > :13:49.But now they're on their way back and a tree planting scheme is

:13:49. > :13:54.

:13:54. > :13:58.starting to a make a difference in It caused the biggest disaster for

:13:58. > :14:04.our trees in modern history. More than 20 million were felled because

:14:04. > :14:08.of Dutch elm disease. Preventative measures are desperately important.

:14:08. > :14:11.In many areas, the elm will disappear. We very much hope that

:14:11. > :14:16.people will recant in the future. And planned for the future they did.

:14:16. > :14:19.It has been slow but 16 disease resistant elm trees are now getting

:14:19. > :14:24.established as Leicestershire could schools and in the National Forest.

:14:24. > :14:30.It was devastating and the disease are still around today. There

:14:30. > :14:33.appears to be a genetic experience -- was distance with this tree.

:14:33. > :14:38.We're also looking to propagate from other isolated trees which

:14:38. > :14:41.survived the disease through the 70s and 80s. This is rare timber,

:14:41. > :14:45.and untrue that may have designed - - died from the disease. At this

:14:45. > :14:48.Park, they are preparing for a would fare on 29th August and some

:14:48. > :14:52.of this would will be available to craftsmen. People will have a

:14:52. > :14:56.chance to learn all about the Somme project. They will be able to see

:14:56. > :15:00.some of the Elms we are milling today, made into beautiful

:15:00. > :15:03.furniture. It will be a chance for them to learn all about the forests,

:15:04. > :15:08.all about the developments and the things that people can see and do

:15:08. > :15:17.here. It is taking time but with care, more and more are on trees

:15:17. > :15:27.will flourish for everyone to enjoy. Coming up - Rams to the rescue. Why

:15:27. > :15:28.

:15:28. > :15:32.Derby County's backing Bombardier. It is a lovely evening here. The

:15:32. > :15:35.stunt -- the Sun is still shining but it is a different story in

:15:35. > :15:43.other parts of the region. I will have a full forecast at the end of

:15:44. > :15:53.a programme. Time for sport with Nat.

:15:54. > :16:00.

:16:00. > :16:04.First swimmer Rebecca Adlington The players warm-up shirts will

:16:04. > :16:09.carry the slogan, save our rail industry.

:16:09. > :16:15.The training T-shirts have been made, the banners printed, a packed

:16:15. > :16:17.pride Park on Saturday will have no doubt about the message.

:16:18. > :16:24.employees have stood by the club over many years and we've got an

:16:24. > :16:29.opportunity to do the same for them. Something like 20,000 people work

:16:29. > :16:39.for Rolls-Royce here. 40 years ago, another Derby company under threat.

:16:39. > :16:44.It looks very bleak. That's all I can say. Derby's then manager Brian

:16:44. > :16:49.Clough said he wanted to cheer up the workers and went out and paid a

:16:49. > :16:53.record transferred three to sign the Robert Todd. Derby County has

:16:53. > :16:57.always held on to its industrial roots and in turn, the workers of

:16:57. > :17:00.Derby have always come out to support their club. They are the

:17:00. > :17:05.best supported club in the East Midlands. That relationship will be

:17:05. > :17:10.tested this season. At one stage last season, Derby were forced but

:17:10. > :17:14.with only four league wins since the CERN of the year, the fans have

:17:14. > :17:19.got fed up. -- the turn of the year. With a year left on his contract,

:17:19. > :17:24.does Nigel Clough have something to prove? I don't look at it like that

:17:24. > :17:28.at all. If we start trying to look at it in a personal way, you tend

:17:28. > :17:34.to make decisions for the short term and not in the best interests

:17:34. > :17:39.of the club over the long term. player have played in the day...

:17:40. > :17:46.They derby lad, one of his brothers works for Bombardier. Absolutely

:17:46. > :17:49.brilliant to be back. Loving it. Itching to get back playing.

:17:49. > :17:54.players may still come up but where does it leave Derby ahead of the

:17:54. > :17:57.new season? The championship is so unpredictable. There are teams

:17:57. > :18:02.coming into it from League One, those coming down. It is almost

:18:02. > :18:06.impossible to predict. The bookies are even finding it difficult to

:18:07. > :18:10.say who will go up. You have the obvious Leicester and West Ham who

:18:10. > :18:14.are favourites but after that, it could be anybody. 40 years ago,

:18:14. > :18:23.against the odds, Derby won the League and the government saved

:18:23. > :18:26.Rolls-Royce. How the City would love that to happen again.

:18:26. > :18:30.The Rams kick-off on Saturday against Birmingham. Tonight, they

:18:30. > :18:34.have a friendly at home to Aston Villa.

:18:34. > :18:38.Leicester City are closing in on signing striker Shane long from

:18:38. > :18:42.Reading. Swimming and Rebecca Adlington says

:18:42. > :18:49.she can get even better in the run- up to 2012, despite becoming world

:18:49. > :18:53.champion over 800 metres at the weekend. Becky arrived back in the

:18:53. > :18:56.UK last night. And today she's been out promoting a swimming campaign

:18:56. > :19:01.in London. Earlier she told me what spurred her on to her latest gold

:19:01. > :19:05.medal. It was the last 50, I pushed off and said holiday, holiday,

:19:05. > :19:09.holiday, just keep going. I put my head down and thought it is all

:19:09. > :19:15.over after this. It doesn't matter about the pain, work as hard as you

:19:15. > :19:20.can. Just try and finish. Did you expect to do so well at the

:19:20. > :19:25.world's? No, I definitely different -- didn't. At the last World, I

:19:25. > :19:28.came away with two bronze medals. It was an exciting time it but to

:19:28. > :19:31.come away this time with a gold and silver is absolutely amazing. And

:19:31. > :19:38.so glad I've improved as well. I never thought it was going to

:19:38. > :19:41.happen. I wasn't even thinking about medals or play how much does

:19:41. > :19:47.it mean to you guessing that gold and silver in the world? In terms

:19:47. > :19:53.of the Olympics coming up, with it being just a year away. It is

:19:53. > :19:57.extremely exciting and the whole of the UK is looking forward to it.

:19:57. > :20:01.Especially as... It was so nice to see my colleague qualifying for the

:20:01. > :20:06.Olympics. It got us all extra motivated and have made us more

:20:06. > :20:13.excited. It is not that far away now. There seemed to be a

:20:13. > :20:16.sensational spirit among the team. What was that like? The support and

:20:16. > :20:20.the team are absolutely amazing at the minute. The atmosphere is so

:20:21. > :20:24.good and everyone is so positive. It is such a great thing to be part

:20:24. > :20:28.of. I wouldn't be able to do it without the team's support. If

:20:28. > :20:31.somebody has a bad swim, they pick them back up for the next race. It

:20:31. > :20:35.is so nice that we have that. We have and always have that in the

:20:35. > :20:39.past and that is why we are doing so well. Becky, does all the

:20:39. > :20:46.support back home still means something to you? It didn't get a

:23:28. > :23:31.really. It was very complicated but These are largely scouts and guides

:23:31. > :23:38.from the East Midlands but also there is very much a national and

:23:51. > :23:57.slight fly in the ointment, the weather has been amazing. What is

:23:57. > :24:01.it going to be like from here on There is a lovely breeze which has

:24:01. > :24:05.suddenly picked up but it has been a different story across the region

:24:05. > :24:10.today. Although the western side has seen the drier weather, we have

:24:43. > :24:51.the south-west, that will bring a band of rain for Thursday. That

:24:51. > :24:55.will also bring a change in the the temperatures. The temperatures are

:24:55. > :24:59.gradually going to go down to what they should be for the time of year,

:24:59. > :25:02.around 20 sources. The rain will become quite heavy and persistent

:25:02. > :25:06.for a time through the middle part of tomorrow and then it will start

:25:06. > :25:10.to pull away eastwards during the evening. Friday will not be a bad

:26:18. > :26:22.It was perfectly clear to see that the Scouts and Guides have been

:26:22. > :26:25.having a fantastic time at the jamboree. Let's hope that weather
