:00:57. > :01:02.Monday's programme. First tonight - the extreme lengths
:01:02. > :01:04.that a student has gone to to improve her chances at university.
:01:04. > :01:08.Rhiannon Brooksbank Jones from Nottingham is hoping to read Korean
:01:08. > :01:14.and Business Management next year. But she claims her language skills
:01:14. > :01:22.were hindered because her tongue was too short. The solution was to
:01:22. > :01:26.under the knife to correct it. Angelina Socci reports.
:01:26. > :01:30.It's coming up to that time of year when exam results are out, and
:01:30. > :01:34.while many students are anxiously hoping that their rows of revision
:01:34. > :01:40.have paid off, one student has gone a step further and has actually had
:01:40. > :01:45.a surgical procedure to try and improve her career prospects.
:01:45. > :01:49.Rhiannon Brooksbank Jones has always been fascinated with Korea.
:01:49. > :01:53.Three years ago, she started learning the language, but soon
:01:53. > :01:57.realised that her pronunciation wasn't as good as it should be.
:01:57. > :02:02.became apparent after a little while but I was having trouble with
:02:02. > :02:05.the Korean the letter L, which comes from a slightly higher place

:02:10. > :02:14.I didn't notice when I was speaking, but after I had left my Korean
:02:14. > :02:19.lesson, I noticed that my tongue was quite tired. After consulting
:02:19. > :02:22.her dentist, she was referred to the Queen's Medical Centre. She was
:02:22. > :02:26.given a procedure known as frenectomy, which involves removing
:02:26. > :02:31.tissue from under the tongue. was an important thing for me,
:02:31. > :02:35.because I am a bit of a perfectionist, and if I can't do it
:02:35. > :02:39.perfectly, it really irritates me. Some might say it is extreme, but
:02:39. > :02:46.you could apply the same argument to plastic surgery. And also, you
:02:46. > :02:49.could say it is showing dedication. She has no regrets about the
:02:49. > :02:55.procedure, and says there has been a noticeable difference in her
:02:56. > :02:59.language skills. Angelina is with us now. How common
:03:00. > :03:03.is this? During the day we have spoken to various medical
:03:03. > :03:08.organisations to try and find out more about the procedure. It seems
:03:08. > :03:13.that it is fairly common, and it is not complicated. But each body we
:03:13. > :03:17.approach to steam did more than a little bit surprised that her
:03:17. > :03:21.reasons to have the operation. That said, it seems that some parents in
:03:21. > :03:24.South Korea are so keen for their children to be able to speak good
:03:24. > :03:31.English that they allow them to have this procedure, because they
:03:31. > :03:35.believe that a longer time can help them improve the pronunciation.
:03:35. > :03:39.assume she is going to do well in her exams, I am sure she will, what
:03:39. > :03:43.does she want to do after which? She is hoping to read Korean and

:03:46. > :03:50.she is hoping to spend a year in Korea, and she believes that
:03:50. > :03:54.because she has had this procedure, her skills will be better, so the

:04:57. > :05:02.They couldn't believe the way she died. She was taken to the Royal

:06:08. > :06:11.Figures just out show that countryside crime is up by more
:06:11. > :06:14.than 60 per cent across the East Midlands.
:06:14. > :06:17.In a moment we'll be speaking to someone from the farmers' insurance
:06:17. > :06:23.company, but first, this report from Geoff Maskell in
:06:23. > :06:27.Leicestershire. It might look idyllic, but in 20
:06:27. > :06:35.years a farmer, and the Gillespie says he has not seen her crime wave
:06:35. > :06:39.like it. In the past two years, I have had stuff stolen, things that
:06:39. > :06:43.I would walk into a shed, it is gone within seconds. In the last
:06:43. > :06:47.year he has had two generators, a quad bike and power tools stolen
:06:48. > :06:52.from his farm. You come back from going down the field, you can see
:06:52. > :06:58.the tracks, you find people asking directions when you know they are
:06:58. > :07:01.not asking directions. It is just bizarre, really. And it isn't just
:07:02. > :07:04.opportunist theft that farmers are having to deal with. Organised
:07:04. > :07:10.gangs are stealing a pieces of plant like this. They will take
:07:10. > :07:13.them from a farm, Neath and down the road, and wait. If they are
:07:13. > :07:16.still there are 12 hours later, chances are it doesn't have a
:07:16. > :07:23.tracker fitted, so it can be shipped off around the world, as

:07:51. > :07:54.all the high-performance vehicle, so one at a Mate vehicle that costs
:07:54. > :07:59.50,000? Police are encouraging farmers to invest in better

:08:03. > :08:06.the dog is out, somebody who is not supposed to be here has to pay the
:08:06. > :08:09.consequences now. Earlier this afternoon I spoke to
:08:09. > :08:16.Nicky Whittaker from NFU Mutual insurance, and I began by asking
:08:16. > :08:19.her what was top of the thieves' list. In the East Midlands, the top

:08:27. > :08:31.detractors that a stone and I ended up outside the UK to fulfil the
:08:31. > :08:37.demand for agricultural machinery. What about big equipment like
:08:37. > :08:40.combine harvesters, are they being stolen? They can be worth up to
:08:40. > :08:46.250,000, so more than a high- performance sports car. They also
:08:46. > :08:50.are leading the UK. This must be having a huge knock-on effect
:08:50. > :08:54.potentially for insurance premiums? We are working very hard with the
:08:54. > :08:58.police and other authorities and farmers, and vehicle manufacturers
:08:58. > :09:03.to be to make sure we can keep premiums low by increasing security,
:09:03. > :09:09.and our recovery rate with tractors is extremely good. We recovered a
:09:09. > :09:13.tractor only recently from Cyprus. Talking of security, what can

:09:22. > :09:27.members of the public, if they go down in the woods, they may get a
:09:27. > :09:31.surprise. Because these are very good at hiding tractors, and other
:09:31. > :09:34.machinery, in the woods. If they see attractive it is parked,
:09:34. > :09:39.perhaps partially covered, they need to ask the question, what is
:09:39. > :09:42.that tractor doing there? We have been successful in recovering
:09:42. > :09:46.several tractors because members of the public had spotted them in
:09:46. > :09:51.woodland, and called the police to see if they are there for a
:09:51. > :09:54.legitimate reason. Thank you. A police inspector who's accused of
:09:54. > :09:59.having sex with a 13-year-old girl has been remanded in custody for
:09:59. > :10:04.two months. Russell Dew, who was based at Mansfield in
:10:05. > :10:07.Nottinghamshire, is facing two charges. They are alleged to have
:10:07. > :10:11.taken place in the Newark area. The 44-year-old, who's been suspended
:10:11. > :10:15.from duty, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court this morning.
:10:15. > :10:21.The family of a Derby man who's in hospital in Singapore are hoping to

:10:24. > :10:26.injured in a motorcycle accident in Bali last month, but didn't have

:11:53. > :11:58.bar doorway, about to exit in the street, and I turned my head to the
:11:59. > :12:04.right, and I could see men, dressed all in black, with a metal bar,
:12:04. > :12:08.chasing torch David, because I had my other daughter with me, I pulled
:12:08. > :12:15.her into the bar, and it was a split-second, we had been attacked.
:12:15. > :12:20.So I came back to the bar and dialled 999. All I could hear were
:12:20. > :12:24.screams and I was praying, we will be safe. Because money is one thing,
:12:24. > :12:31.but losing your husband and your daughter in the same night would be
:12:31. > :12:37.awful. If I can just come back to you. How do you feel about what has
:12:37. > :12:43.happened? How are your daughter's? Obviously, as a family, it is very

:13:44. > :13:49.more than 1 million on improvements to this area in
:13:49. > :13:53.Nottingham. From today, a banning order should make the open space
