:00:04. > :00:12.This is East Midlands today. Tonight, police prepare for the

:00:13. > :00:19.worst, after last night's riots. In Nottingham, police stations were

:00:19. > :00:23.attacked, and almost 90 arrested. In Leicester, police in riot gear

:00:23. > :00:27.tried to stop you taking control the city centre. Even charities

:00:27. > :00:34.were hit. We just can not believe what has

:00:34. > :00:37.happened, devastated. Also tonight, behind and is on for this man as

:00:37. > :00:47.victims of sexual assault face up to their ordeal.

:00:47. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:58.I have not come to terms with it. I will be finding out why a more and

:00:58. > :01:02.

:01:02. > :01:05.more people are using be PDSA Good evening. Police officers

:01:05. > :01:11.across the East Midlands are again preparing to spend the night on the

:01:11. > :01:14.streets to prevent gangs of youths causing damage and destruction. In

:01:14. > :01:19.the worst outbreak of violence so far, police arrested more than 100

:01:19. > :01:23.people last night. The vast majority were in Nottingham, where

:01:23. > :01:27.89 people were taken into custody. In Leicester, 14 arrests were made

:01:27. > :01:35.for public order, damage and burglary offences. In Derbyshire,

:01:35. > :01:38.two 15 year-old youths are under arrest.

:01:38. > :01:40.The worst outbreak of violence was in the City of Nottingham, where

:01:40. > :01:43.five police stations came under attack, a college was firebombed,

:01:44. > :01:47.gangs tried to break into three pubs, and cars across the city were

:01:47. > :01:52.set on fire and destroyed. There were also reports of children

:01:52. > :01:55.setting fire to trees. Our chief news reporter was out on

:01:55. > :02:02.the streets of Nottingham last night and joins us now from the

:02:03. > :02:11.headquarters of Nottingham police at Sherwood Lodge.

:02:11. > :02:14.Good evening Quentin. Good evening. It is here, of course, much of the

:02:14. > :02:20.effort to control and co-ordinate the operation against the violence

:02:20. > :02:25.and rioting is being co-ordinated. For the third night, running. Last

:02:25. > :02:31.night, this force had to deal with thousands of calls as well as

:02:31. > :02:34.hundreds of incidents. It left three officers injured and so far,

:02:34. > :02:37.more than 90 people arrested. I spent all of last night on the

:02:37. > :02:47.streets of Nottingham, keeping up with some of the events as they

:02:47. > :02:51.unfolded. Captured on a foam, the moment when

:02:51. > :02:57.Canning Circus police station was hit by fire bombs.

:02:57. > :03:01.-- a phone. The damage from the petrol bomb attack can be clearly

:03:01. > :03:04.seen outside the police station. At the time of the attack there

:03:05. > :03:12.were still officers inside the building. The man who filmed the

:03:12. > :03:16.attack from his rooftop just could not believe his eyes. I was scared,

:03:16. > :03:24.making sure they did not see me. When they started throwing bombs at

:03:24. > :03:28.the police station, I was utterly disgusted with what was going on.

:03:28. > :03:34.It was quite scary. I put it was safe, living close to a police

:03:34. > :03:39.station, but apparently not. 20 utes later attacked another

:03:39. > :03:43.police station. It was all over him a couple of minutes. -- youths. The

:03:43. > :03:48.attack here is typical of the type of attacks throughout the night in

:03:48. > :03:52.Nottingham. Quick and sporadic examples of hit-and-run vandalism.

:03:52. > :03:56.Officers here expressed frustration that they could not chase the

:03:56. > :04:00.vandals because they would lose them in the alleyways. By 3am there

:04:00. > :04:06.were 90 arrests, and although there was little looting, officers were

:04:06. > :04:09.alarmed by how many young people were found carrying weapons.

:04:09. > :04:14.Some of the damage was apparent in the darkness last night, but the

:04:14. > :04:17.full extent is only revealed in daylight. Car owners came out to

:04:17. > :04:19.survey the damage to their vehicles on Moorgate Street and Holden

:04:19. > :04:25.Street, close to Canning Circus, where last night's firebombing took

:04:25. > :04:30.place. Residents said between 30 and 40 youths went on the rampage,

:04:30. > :04:40.throwing bricks, smashing windows and jumping on rooves. For some,

:04:40. > :04:40.

:04:40. > :04:44.the cost of repairs has cost them in other ways.

:04:44. > :04:52.I have enough money to get to Portugal, but not enough to get

:04:52. > :05:02.back. I cannot pay it for my holiday. An insurance company would

:05:02. > :05:04.

:05:04. > :05:07.right of the car. After last night's violence in Leicester,

:05:07. > :05:10.twice as many police officers will be on the streets tonight. The

:05:10. > :05:20.force also reveal that it has refused to send staff to help out

:05:20. > :05:31.

:05:31. > :05:35.in other areas of the country. The night the centre of Leicester was

:05:35. > :05:41.locked down as groups of masked troublemakers played cat and mouse

:05:41. > :05:45.with police, attacking shopfronts over several hours. We saw lads on

:05:45. > :05:55.bikes with golf clubs, they started smashing in windows, taking

:05:55. > :06:01.everything. Money has gone, phones gone, Juri... Everything. They have

:06:01. > :06:06.no reason, they are not fighting for the man he got shot in London.

:06:06. > :06:16.There was looting of shops, even Poundstretcher. Children as young

:06:16. > :06:20.as 12 were taking part. What do their parents think they are doing?

:06:20. > :06:28.Do those parents take no responsibility for their kids? Did

:06:28. > :06:31.not ask what they are doing and try to stop them? As tensions rose, the

:06:31. > :06:34.police tried to clear the streets. Nightclub bouncers even found

:06:34. > :06:40.themselves having to stop people leaving, because it was not safe

:06:40. > :06:44.outside. It was a long night. Things are finally under control

:06:44. > :06:50.here, just after 2am. Now we have to think about clearing up the

:06:50. > :06:53.damage. The clean-up has already started

:06:53. > :06:59.but it will take some time. In Leicester, daylight revealed the

:06:59. > :07:02.random nature of the rioting. It seems it is not just the likes of

:07:02. > :07:08.shoe shops and electrical shops which are targets, but even a

:07:08. > :07:18.charity ambulance. Hours after the rioting finished, there were still

:07:18. > :07:18.

:07:18. > :07:23.masked men in the streets of the city.

:07:23. > :07:30.Another day, another city, another riot.

:07:30. > :07:33.Here is part of the aftermath, a burned out minibus for Age Concern.

:07:33. > :07:37.The youngsters who have done the damage are hitting as are their own

:07:37. > :07:41.community, the oldest and most frail members of that community.

:07:41. > :07:45.All of us are devastated and cannot believe what has happened.

:07:45. > :07:49.A new minibus will cost 45,000. The charity says during these tough

:07:50. > :07:55.times, it simply cannot afford it. In the centre of Leicester, more

:07:55. > :07:59.damage. People had been telling me a gang of youths came running down

:07:59. > :08:03.this street, they smashed this window and then ran down here,

:08:03. > :08:10.smashing this door as they went. They smashed another window, and

:08:10. > :08:14.then carried on by attacking one of the oldest businesses in Leicester.

:08:14. > :08:19.I am the grandson of the founder of the company and it is disappointing

:08:19. > :08:27.that this has happened in Leicester. I am saddened that it has happened

:08:27. > :08:30.on our doorstep. Young men Wearing masks and concealing their faces

:08:30. > :08:40.were stopped by the police, one of them told me what happened last

:08:40. > :08:41.

:08:41. > :08:51.night. It kicked off and that was it.

:08:51. > :08:52.

:08:52. > :09:00.lot of people are saying why? not doing it, everybody else is. It

:09:00. > :09:04.is because of London. It is a sad day for Leicester. We

:09:04. > :09:08.are proud of the city and it is a small number of people, less than

:09:08. > :09:13.150, he decided to get involved in criminal damage to our businesses.

:09:13. > :09:18.This is local people damaging local properties.

:09:18. > :09:23.We should not let these hooligans run our lives. As members of the

:09:23. > :09:28.faith communities, we ask people for calm.

:09:28. > :09:37.Beat in the operation is still under way as costs mount. There is

:09:37. > :09:41.a sense of disbelief. -- v clean up operation.

:09:41. > :09:45.I saw a number of police vans heading South to Nottingham earlier.

:09:45. > :09:50.We are also getting reports that the force has drafted in extra

:09:50. > :09:56.officers from other forces around the country. I will be asking an

:09:56. > :09:59.Assistant Chief Constable about that later in the programme. I am

:09:59. > :10:06.joined in the studio by the Bishop of Sherwood, Tony Porter. He

:10:06. > :10:13.prefers to be called Bishop Tony, or Bishop, but not Your Grace.

:10:13. > :10:21.What thoughts went through your mind when you saw those pictures?

:10:21. > :10:26.was disappointed and depressed. were a policeman for some time in

:10:26. > :10:31.Manchester. He worked in areas, poor areas, many people we have

:10:31. > :10:38.spoken to have no idea why this has happened. The UK having taken

:10:38. > :10:43.matador? -- do you have any taken this? I work with the police

:10:43. > :10:47.closely in Moss Side for many years. This is a continuation of family

:10:47. > :10:53.breakdown. It is sad to say. But when young people have no adult

:10:53. > :10:57.role models, when their role models are elder siblings, who put two

:10:57. > :11:02.fingers up at teachers and the police... They learn from them. We,

:11:02. > :11:07.as a generation, have to take some responsibility. We have not been

:11:07. > :11:10.great role models as parents. single mother on radio this morning

:11:10. > :11:15.said, she tried everything she could with her son but he still got

:11:15. > :11:19.into trouble. She went to court and said, do what you will with him.

:11:19. > :11:23.And the court did not give him a sentence and she had to pay a fine.

:11:23. > :11:30.She said it is not my fault, I do not give any support from the

:11:30. > :11:40.authorities. I understand the frustration. I think that parenting

:11:40. > :11:46.courses are very important. People need to be taught parenting skills.

:11:46. > :11:50.We pray that people will learn from be teaching to be good parents.

:11:50. > :11:57.Some people think, I am a parent, do I need outside interference

:11:58. > :12:01.telling me had to look after my children? And think what we are

:12:01. > :12:06.seeing on the streets, the answer to that is yes. We do not want to

:12:06. > :12:12.force people to do it, we want them to wanted. The hunger to be a good

:12:12. > :12:17.parent means good teaching. Very briefly, as a senior member of the

:12:17. > :12:21.Church, do you ever despair when you see the scenes on our streets?

:12:21. > :12:25.I never despair because we worked together in Moss Side for the good

:12:25. > :12:30.of the community. I have been with the come -- the police in St Anns

:12:30. > :12:37.today and seen wonderful things. I never despair.

:12:37. > :12:40.Thank you. You are watching East Midlands today. A 34-year-old man

:12:40. > :12:43.has appeared in court charged with murdering a woman in Derby.

:12:43. > :12:46.Danielle Thompson, who was 22, was found injured at a house in

:12:46. > :12:49.Chaddesden, early on Saturday morning. She had stab wounds and

:12:49. > :12:54.died in hospital. Martin Shaw was remanded in custody until October,

:12:54. > :12:57.when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court.

:12:58. > :13:00.Derby City Council has paid out 60% more to people who have had their

:13:00. > :13:03.vehicles damaged by potholes compared to the previous year. More

:13:03. > :13:11.than 4,600 has been handed out, almost sixty claims for

:13:11. > :13:21.compensation remain unresolved. The council say it is partly down to

:13:21. > :13:26.

:13:26. > :13:29.compensation culture. A woman has described how she tried to fight

:13:29. > :13:33.off an attacker in Leicester as he sexually assaulted her. Today,

:13:33. > :13:39.police released a new image of the suspect who they want to speak to

:13:39. > :13:43.about three indecent assaults that happened on the same day.

:13:43. > :13:48.This is the suspect, walking through Leicester on the morning of

:13:48. > :13:58.Saturday, 8th January, this year. Between 7 and 9 m that day, three

:13:58. > :14:05.

:14:05. > :14:10.women aged 25, 74 and 56 were assaulted. -- 7 and 9 am. I went

:14:10. > :14:14.into survival mode. I knew I would never go down without a fight. I

:14:14. > :14:19.had thought, previously, I would have laid down and thought of

:14:19. > :14:23.England of his had happened. But I fought back. Victims have helped to

:14:23. > :14:27.generate his image of the suspect, who is described as a mid-twenties

:14:27. > :14:32.and over six foot tall. One victim says she cannot come to terms what

:14:32. > :14:37.has happened until he is caught. Every time you close your eyes, he

:14:37. > :14:42.is there, in your head. He is just scanning, his face in your head.

:14:42. > :14:49.Every time you go out, you scan the crowds, looking it and hoping to

:14:49. > :14:57.see him. We are concerned, this man has committed three offences,

:14:57. > :15:02.within a short space of time. I am concerned there are more victims to

:15:03. > :15:07.have not come forward. If there are, I urge them to come forward.

:15:07. > :15:11.This afternoon, officers handed out leaflets of the man. Seven months

:15:11. > :15:21.after these crimes were committed, the police hope this latest appeal

:15:21. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:30.for information will finally lead them to the person responsible.

:15:31. > :15:34.More and more people are using an animal charity. The PDSA says

:15:34. > :15:43.people should be more careful what animals they use, so they know they

:15:43. > :15:49.can look after them properly. Oscar, a Cocker spaniel, visits the

:15:49. > :15:53.People's Dispensary for Sick animals. Be PDSA is a charity and

:15:53. > :15:57.people on means tested in order to benefit from its services. Oscar's

:15:57. > :16:06.owners both lost their jobs. It is now more difficult to pay for

:16:06. > :16:13.treatment. These days you cannot visit the set without a hundred

:16:13. > :16:22.pounds in your pocket. Over the last five years, the

:16:22. > :16:27.demand for PDSA services has increased by over 60%. Be PDSA has

:16:27. > :16:32.just introduced limits on pedigree pets. Owners can now only register

:16:32. > :16:35.one new pedigree animal instead of three. Specially bred animals can

:16:35. > :16:45.tend to suffer more health problems. Vets Citybus should take more care

:16:45. > :16:47.

:16:47. > :16:53.in choosing their pets. You have to think carefully about

:16:53. > :16:57.what pets you have. We tried to help people. We are not a finger

:16:57. > :17:05.wagging organisation, we are here to help people.

:17:05. > :17:11.The charity relies on public donations. Pedigree animals are

:17:11. > :17:15.expensive. Unemployed people will have a mongrel. It is a good idea.

:17:15. > :17:25.Private debt build a so extortionate.

:17:25. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:34.It is a value service, had pleaded all benefit.

:17:34. > :17:38.Hopefully people will benefit. Time for sport. 16 goals and seven

:17:38. > :17:41.penalties coming up after just one night of football.

:17:41. > :17:44.Yes, a goal-tastic sport for you this evening, starting with one of

:17:44. > :17:51.the best cup-ties Nottingham Forest manager Steve McLaren says he has

:17:51. > :17:55.ever seen. Last night's game with Notts County was a belter. Six

:17:55. > :18:04.goals and seven penalties flew into the back of the net on a memorable

:18:04. > :18:11.night. It was the shortest away drive for the best game some had

:18:11. > :18:16.ever seen. A crowd of over 21,000 were there, dizzy chance after

:18:16. > :18:21.chance, right from the off. A truly unforgettable Nottingham derby.

:18:21. > :18:27.County, the underdogs, started of better. Mike Edwards poked them

:18:27. > :18:32.into the lead. Then, it was Forest's Turner, in his classic

:18:32. > :18:39.cup-tie. Nottingham born Louis McGugan scored with a spectacular

:18:39. > :18:45.free-kick. After half-time, good work set-up Robert Feng Li to score

:18:45. > :18:49.his first goal for Forest. -- Finley. 15 minutes to full-time and

:18:49. > :18:55.former Forest man Craig West car announced his arrival in perfect

:18:55. > :19:03.fashion. So, the game went into extra-time. Not so went ahead again

:19:03. > :19:09.with a goal from Hughes. 6,000 not fans thought they were heading for

:19:09. > :19:13.a famous victory, but with seconds to go, wears Morgan, a man born and

:19:13. > :19:21.raised within walking distance of both grounds, spanked the ball at

:19:21. > :19:26.the top corner. -- West Morgan. This took the tie into a remarkable

:19:26. > :19:33.penalty shoot-out. The crucial kick fell to Captain looked Chambers,

:19:33. > :19:43.who scored the vital penalty, which secured the win. Then Neil Bishop

:19:43. > :19:47.

:19:48. > :19:53.lifted the final kick of the It it has been a roller-coaster.

:19:53. > :19:58.Our players were fantastic, I thought we had more chances.

:19:58. > :20:02.reminded me of a boxing match, standing toe-to-toe, exchanging

:20:02. > :20:05.blows. We were lucky denied that we stayed on our feet.

:20:05. > :20:12.There were no arrests before, during or after the game, which has

:20:12. > :20:14.prompted great praise for the fans. At Leicester, the only way is

:20:14. > :20:22.Schlup! What a night for youngster Jeffrey

:20:22. > :20:29.Schlup. Sorry about that. He scored a hat-trick on his competitive

:20:29. > :20:32.debut in the Cup win at Rotherham, and he is just 18. Leicester are

:20:32. > :20:35.are the big spenders of the championship, but they may just

:20:35. > :20:41.have found a priceless gem among their own ranks.

:20:41. > :20:46.It took Jeffrey Schlup just 18 second half minutes to notch his

:20:46. > :20:49.three goals and turn the tide -- vitae with Rotherham on its head.

:20:49. > :20:55.It was one-all at the time and Jeffrey Schlup showed real

:20:55. > :21:01.confidence. -- half-time. The other two goals were striker's efforts,

:21:01. > :21:07.have been to put the tie beyond Rotherham's reach. For the record,

:21:08. > :21:17.Leicester scored all of The Gulls last night, despite it being a 4 -

:21:18. > :21:18.

:21:18. > :21:26.1 win. -- the goals. Paul Gallacher levelled things up with a rare

:21:26. > :21:30.header. So, not a bad way to make your debut and prove you do not

:21:30. > :21:33.always have to spend millions to bring success.

:21:33. > :21:37.On to Derby, and former defender and local lad Chris Riggott has

:21:37. > :21:47.signed a one-year deal with the club. Some good news for the Rams

:21:47. > :21:47.

:21:47. > :21:51.then, after last night's humbling by League Two Shrewsbury. First-

:21:51. > :21:57.round exits are becoming the norm for Derby. Beaten for the third

:21:57. > :22:01.time in a row by a league two side. Derby were down by half-time and it

:22:01. > :22:06.was a former Derby man who did with them. Lionel Ainsworth only played

:22:06. > :22:09.a few games, but he said that all three of Shrewsbury's goals. Nigel

:22:09. > :22:15.Clough thought some of his players did not put enough effort. They

:22:15. > :22:20.were booed off at half-time with Clough facing a tricky team-talk.

:22:20. > :22:27.It was an embarrassing one. I'm embarrassed for us and some of the

:22:27. > :22:30.first-half performances. We got an early goal and the second half.

:22:30. > :22:33.That goal was a first for Chris Maguire, who has moved from

:22:33. > :22:38.Aberdeen. Derby were on the front foot again but Shrewsbury nearly

:22:38. > :22:45.scored a 4th on the break. Theo Robinson finished off a neat move

:22:45. > :22:48.to makes things close but it was not enough. Hoping to get some have

:22:48. > :22:50.his injured players back for Saturday's game at Watford, he

:22:50. > :22:53.might need them. In cricket, Nottinghamshire's

:22:53. > :22:57.Stuart Broad has continued his good form for England in the third Test

:22:57. > :23:00.against India at Edgbaston. He took a wicket with his first ball and

:23:00. > :23:05.added three more victims as India were bowled out for just 224 on the

:23:05. > :23:15.first day. This was star man Sachin Tendulkar going cheaply. Broad's

:23:15. > :23:25.other key wicket was that of MS Dhoni, who went for 77. And England
