:00:02. > :00:11.This is East Midlands Today with Quentin Rayner and me Anne Davies.

:00:11. > :00:18.Tonight a new strategy to take on the gangs. From now on Nottingham

:00:18. > :00:22.or treat street crime, as a gang crime. We need to get them off the

:00:22. > :00:28.streets into more positive relationships.

:00:28. > :00:33.Also tonight, the event macros may be over, but the consequences

:00:33. > :00:39.continue. Find out how some businesses are losing thousands of

:00:39. > :00:44.pounds every day. Plus, are you in the picture? Find out about the

:00:44. > :00:54.digital switch-over. Talking tactics with the man who says he is

:00:54. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :00:58.playing badly, but scoring belters First tonight, some of the most

:00:58. > :01:03.influential people in Nottingham have admitted for the first time

:01:03. > :01:07.that the city does have a problem with street gangs. We can reveal

:01:07. > :01:11.that they're now drawing up a plan to tackle it. They say this isn't a

:01:11. > :01:13.response to last week's riots. They began working on a gangs' strategy

:01:13. > :01:23.months ago, following growing concern about the level of violent

:01:23. > :01:26.

:01:26. > :01:30.crime on the streets. A trail of destruction as violence

:01:31. > :01:34.spread to Nottingham and a large group of thugs attacked homes and

:01:34. > :01:39.cars are the petrol bombing a police station. This may have been

:01:39. > :01:44.sparked by the events macros in London, but people there have been

:01:44. > :01:49.concerned for months. They are worried about groups of 16-24-year-

:01:49. > :01:55.old who have been involved in street crime. They are worried that

:01:55. > :02:05.guns and knives are also involved. I heard about one group who set up

:02:05. > :02:12.a one -- a road block and rob people. Another gang used machetes.

:02:12. > :02:17.This is about tackling between two -- between 200-300 people in the

:02:17. > :02:21.Nottingham area. We are looking to tackle the causes of gang of

:02:21. > :02:26.membership. We need to find people work, we need to have jobs for them

:02:26. > :02:31.to go to, and to tackle deprivation in the sitter for -- deprivation in

:02:31. > :02:37.the city. The police had been trying to

:02:37. > :02:41.tackle it as well. There have been arrested Radford, and they have in

:02:41. > :02:49.stock checks in St Anne's. Could this have been prevented? The

:02:49. > :02:52.people running these projects say that jobs are needed. These

:02:53. > :02:59.volunteers that in after the inclusion project was shut down.

:02:59. > :03:06.they take this away, what do the kids have left? We are trying to

:03:06. > :03:10.get them back on the right track. They keep blaming the parents.

:03:10. > :03:15.youth inclusion projects help -- help to these two musicians to turn

:03:15. > :03:19.their lives around. They performed at Glastonbury this year. They

:03:19. > :03:25.appealed for calm at the Notting Hill Carnival. If I get an

:03:25. > :03:31.opportunity to do something positive then I will do it,

:03:32. > :03:37.otherwise I would add been in prison like other youths like me.

:03:38. > :03:41.was always involved in gangs, this was a life-saver.

:03:41. > :03:47.It was police that tactics that brought a halt to the extraordinary

:03:47. > :03:51.violence, but now there is a wider debate about how it -- about how

:03:51. > :03:54.they stop it again. Police forces in the East Midlands

:03:54. > :03:56.say they have been "humbled" by the support they've received from the

:03:56. > :03:58.public following last week's rioting. In Derbyshire the number

:03:58. > :04:01.of people applying to become Special Constables has doubled and

:04:01. > :04:04.Nottinghamshire Police are holding a special recruitment event later

:04:04. > :04:13.this week. On Friday night our reporter Jonathan Cecil went out on

:04:13. > :04:16.patrol with two Specials in Nottingham city centre.

:04:16. > :04:25.Matthew and the Dani are Special Constables. They look like we do

:04:25. > :04:29.officers and have the same a powers. I do this after the goodness of my

:04:29. > :04:39.own heart to put something back into the community. I want to make

:04:39. > :04:43.sure the public are safe. That is good to hear... They have been

:04:43. > :04:49.trying to get as many of us as they cannot, they want to make sure the

:04:49. > :04:53.whole area is covered. To insure a visual presence around

:04:53. > :04:59.80 Special Constables run duty last week during the disturbances.

:04:59. > :05:07.kept hearing what was going on on the radio. I wanted to get in and

:05:07. > :05:14.help out. I have seen groups of youths hanging about the 4th. These

:05:14. > :05:21.people on a mission. I have not seen that before. It goes through

:05:21. > :05:27.your mind of what would happen if something was to kick off.

:05:27. > :05:31.You have done very well. I have a flat in Tottenham, I did not want

:05:31. > :05:36.to go back there. You have done very well up here. It makes you

:05:36. > :05:41.feel very good at them is their community out there.

:05:41. > :05:44.The level of support for the police has been a high this week. Senior

:05:44. > :05:53.officers recognise the value of their part-time volunteers, and

:05:53. > :06:01.want to add to the 350 Special Constables. All we ask is that they

:06:01. > :06:05.provide a minimum of four hours a week. The average person gives us a

:06:05. > :06:08.300 to 400 hours a year. recruitment drive is taking place

:06:08. > :06:11.this Saturday. Arrests are still being made in

:06:11. > :06:13.Leicester after last week's troubles. The police took 5 more

:06:13. > :06:19.people in for questioning today, including a 14-year-old boy

:06:19. > :06:21.suspected of burglary. So far, 83 people have been arrested.

:06:21. > :06:23.Meanwhile, traders say they're struggling to attract customers

:06:23. > :06:32.into the city centre, despite reassurances from the authorities

:06:32. > :06:36.that Leicester is now open for business.

:06:36. > :06:41.The clean-up operation in the City is still continuing. For

:06:41. > :06:46.restaurants and bars what happened last week is having a massive

:06:46. > :06:51.effect. This restaurant would usually do 100 covers a night.

:06:51. > :06:54.are about 40 % down on bookings. People say they are worried that

:06:54. > :06:57.any their relatives in, worried that their cars been damaged. These

:06:57. > :07:01.things are worrying to our customers.

:07:01. > :07:04.It is not just here where people are cancelling bookings, it seems

:07:05. > :07:13.to be happening across the city, and is costing them thousands of

:07:13. > :07:19.pounds. Fridays and Saturdays are usually quite busy, but after last

:07:19. > :07:25.week Wednesday was dead, really dead. There were many cancellations.

:07:25. > :07:30.This weekend was also quiet. think people are avoiding the area

:07:30. > :07:37.on the weekend. This restaurant has been

:07:37. > :07:44.particularly badly affected. have lost 80 % of our business. We

:07:44. > :07:49.lost about 20,000. That is a lot of money. Things are fairly tough

:07:49. > :07:52.coming out of recession, or busy taking a hit like this can have

:07:52. > :08:01.catastrophic effect on businesses. As soon as we can restore football

:08:01. > :08:09.to the city be better -- bought before.

:08:09. > :08:14.It hurts the business. Every cover is important, you want to make

:08:14. > :08:20.everyone happy. You have to see the customer a's appointed you, they

:08:20. > :08:25.want to feel safe. After the rioters, who all the

:08:25. > :08:30.restaurant has warned there is consumer confidence.

:08:30. > :08:36.There is a lot more to look forward to, we will deliver -- lifting the

:08:36. > :08:41.lid on people's lives, what you think that putting your treasured

:08:41. > :08:44.possessions inside a memory box? Nottinghamshire Police have started

:08:44. > :08:49.a murder inquiry after a 28 year old paramedic died nine days after

:08:49. > :08:53.being attacked. The cricket fan had travelled to the city to watch the

:08:53. > :08:56.Test Match. He was was assaulted outside a city centre pub in the

:08:56. > :08:58.early hours of the following morning and never recovered. Sarah

:08:58. > :09:07.Teale reports A twenty thousand pound reward is

:09:07. > :09:15.being offered for help in finding this is where James Hodgkinson was

:09:15. > :09:19.assaulted, outside this pub. The 28-year-old cricket fan had spent

:09:19. > :09:23.the day watching the Test match at Trent Bridge, and went into town

:09:23. > :09:28.afterwards. It is understood he received head injuries which were

:09:28. > :09:32.so severe he was left in a coma. He never recovered and died last

:09:32. > :09:37.Tuesday -- Tuesday in the Queen's Medical Centre. James Hodgkinson

:09:37. > :09:42.has been described as an amazing paramedic. He had been working in

:09:42. > :09:46.London, although he grew up in Southampton, joining the ambulance

:09:46. > :09:51.service for years ago. The local newspaper there has been carrying

:09:51. > :09:54.tributes to him. Nottinghamshire Police have started a murder

:09:54. > :10:01.investigation, p details have been released about exactly what

:10:01. > :10:09.happened. Their major crime team are investigating, and are

:10:09. > :10:15.appealing put any witnesses to come forward.

:10:15. > :10:21.In another murder investigation, a 28,000 reward has be offered

:10:21. > :10:24.behind in the kill other women in Nottingham. -- for finding the

:10:24. > :10:27.killer of a woman in Nottingham. The body of 28 year-old Caroline

:10:27. > :10:30.Coyne was found in St Ann's on Saturday the 23rd of July. Despite

:10:30. > :10:32.speaking to more than two hundred people, detectives say they still

:10:32. > :10:34.need more information. The reward is being offered by Nottinghamshire

:10:34. > :10:37.Police and Crimestoppers. Police are investigating after a

:10:37. > :10:40.man was stabbed five times at Somercotes in Derbyshire. The 19

:10:40. > :10:44.year old was found in the garden of a house on Nottingham Road just

:10:44. > :10:46.after ten o clock last night. He was taken to hospital for treatment

:10:46. > :10:49.and later released. Investigations are continuing.

:10:49. > :10:54.And Hollywood action hero Jean- Claude Van Damme is due to begin

:10:54. > :10:57.filming in Derby. The actor is one of the stars of a film called UFO.

:10:57. > :11:06.It's set for release next year and is being directed by Dominic Burns,

:11:06. > :11:11.who is from Derby. They say that every cloud has a

:11:11. > :11:13.silver lining and that's quite true for five young men from Nottingham.

:11:13. > :11:16.Two years ago, their musical studies came to end when their

:11:16. > :11:20.college ran out of money and their courses ended rather abruptly. Not

:11:20. > :11:22.to be beaten, they formed a band, called The Third Kind, and they've

:11:22. > :11:32.been causing quite a noise in the industry ever since,

:11:32. > :11:42.

:11:42. > :11:47.Now there's nothing more we dread They are back with popular demand.

:11:47. > :11:53.Five-piece rock band, the Third Kind started after their college

:11:53. > :11:56.course was cancelled, despite a musical picket line. The students

:11:56. > :12:01.were unable to complete their studies in contemporary popular

:12:01. > :12:11.music. If they feel they were left high and dry if, but decided to

:12:11. > :12:11.

:12:11. > :12:16.carry on regardless. It was a sinking ship, we thought

:12:16. > :12:23.if this was going to happen, we might as well start a band and go

:12:24. > :12:28.on around. The sudden events left them feeling angry and frustrated.

:12:28. > :12:33.It was frustrating been dropped in the deep end. We think we have got

:12:33. > :12:38.Brits, we are doing all right now. We have a decent set up, we are

:12:38. > :12:46.doing very well, we are playing a lot of gigs, we are raking in it be

:12:46. > :12:54.done. Well as much as we can! If we finish the course, we would

:12:54. > :12:59.have had a lot more experience. Two people in the band are

:12:59. > :13:04.considering returning to full-time education, one is unemployed, and

:13:04. > :13:14.the singer is a full-time carer and a part-time rock!

:13:14. > :13:18.

:13:18. > :13:24.It only happens to a few, They are allowed, but good!

:13:24. > :13:27.There is nothing more we dread here than losing viewers, and a very is

:13:27. > :13:31.sadly, every chance of that happening unless you actor.

:13:31. > :13:37.That is because over the next fortnight, everyone has to switch

:13:37. > :13:47.to digital to carry on watching. Because otherwise, that is going to

:13:47. > :13:49.

:13:49. > :13:53.The TV switch-over starts here on 17th August. The reminders about

:13:53. > :13:59.the digital switch-over have been on our TV is it for a while, but

:13:59. > :14:02.now is the time to tune in to avoid your screen going blank. That is

:14:02. > :14:07.because the next stage affect the most important transmitter in the

:14:07. > :14:12.East Midlands, at Waltham in Leicestershire. Standing at more

:14:12. > :14:17.than 1000 ft, it serves 8 does -- 8000 homes. Over the course of the

:14:17. > :14:22.next few weeks, the old way of watching TV will be switched off,

:14:22. > :14:29.and the only way of watching will be via a digital signal. There are

:14:29. > :14:34.two dates for your diary. To BBC2 analogue channel will stop being

:14:34. > :14:40.transmitted, and two weeks later, on the 31st August, BBC1, ITV,

:14:40. > :14:45.Channel 4 and Channel 5 will also be switched off forever. After both

:14:45. > :14:50.stages, Freeview viewers will have to retune. Cable viewers are

:14:50. > :14:53.unaffected. The vast but charity of aerials will not need changing. The

:14:53. > :14:58.important thing to remember is you don't need to replace your TV with

:14:58. > :15:04.a new one, but if it doesn't have a digital tuner inside, you will have

:15:04. > :15:09.to buy and plug-in a set top box in order to continue viewing. There is

:15:09. > :15:14.help at hand for elderly and disabled viewers. The switch-over

:15:14. > :15:17.help scheme run by the BBC will come out and convert a television

:15:17. > :15:22.to digital. For some people that will be free of charge, some people

:15:22. > :15:27.would be asked to make a 40 contribution. But as part of the

:15:27. > :15:31.scheme, they will get the TV converted to digital, and get 12

:15:31. > :15:35.months after care, so if they need any more help or guidance, they can

:15:35. > :15:38.call and they will come out and show them. Nine out of 10 homes in

:15:38. > :15:42.the East Midlands have already gone digital, but the next fortnight

:15:42. > :15:52.need to see everyone making the big switch.

:15:52. > :16:00.

:16:00. > :16:06.I'm going to get my advice from the horse's mouth. I will get a 1-1

:16:07. > :16:11.with you! There is bound to be added to the switch-over on the

:16:11. > :16:21.weather front, as well. There is a change on the way, it is time to

:16:21. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:38.swap your sunglasses for one of Release! Sport will cheer you up.

:16:38. > :16:41.Shall I leave you to your 1-1? A long awaited new arrival at

:16:41. > :16:45.Forest, striker Ishmael Miller comes from West Brom to bolster the

:16:45. > :16:48.team which flopped at Millwall on Saturday, especially in the first

:16:48. > :16:52.45 minutes. Plenty of hard work ahead.

:16:52. > :16:56.This is the kind of promise that Ishmael Miller has shown in the

:16:56. > :17:00.past. West Brom's goal of the season three years ago, but a

:17:00. > :17:05.cruciate injury ruined his progress soon after this. Now it feels like

:17:05. > :17:12.a fresh start. I just want to play games, that is the main thing right

:17:12. > :17:15.now. I haven't played back-to-back games will a long time. -- for a

:17:15. > :17:19.long time. It is not like they are short of attacking options at

:17:20. > :17:27.Forest, but they couldn't produce a goal on Saturday, and opponents of

:17:27. > :17:32.all good. Henderson got the touch from a simple corner. A huge second

:17:32. > :17:36.half improvement including this attempted in the post, but trotter

:17:36. > :17:40.delighted the ever hostile home crowd with this killer goal.

:17:40. > :17:45.didn't deserve to win the game. If we had been playing until tomorrow,

:17:45. > :17:50.we wouldn't have scored. Plenty to consider as Steve McClaren get to

:17:50. > :17:53.grips with things. Derby County have also been talking

:17:53. > :17:57.strikers, and I haven't ruled out a move by Leicester City's Steve

:17:57. > :18:02.Howard, but at the weekend, another Steve made the headlines, youngster

:18:02. > :18:12.Steve Davies, who hit another wonder goal. This afternoon he has

:18:12. > :18:18.

:18:18. > :18:26.been talking to Natalie in our The Tactics Truck is back. By

:18:26. > :18:33.popular demand! The cameraman loves it. But forget him, because world

:18:33. > :18:38.renowned managers have been in this struck with us, international

:18:38. > :18:44.goalkeepers, and legends of world football. But tonight, at the man

:18:44. > :18:49.in the Tactics Truck is derby county's latest goal hero. Steve

:18:49. > :18:54.Davies is just 23, but in his third season with Derby. As soon as I

:18:54. > :18:59.have got the ball from under my feet, the first thing on my mind is

:18:59. > :19:05.to hit the target. A to get two goals in two weeks at the start of

:19:05. > :19:08.the season is great for you? As a striker, it is always nice to score.

:19:08. > :19:13.I don't dig I have played the best in the past two two games, the

:19:13. > :19:18.gaffer has let me know that. This is what he did on opening day

:19:18. > :19:24.against Birmingham. His goal against what birds at the weekend

:19:24. > :19:29.was another stunner. -- against Watford. Up until that moment, I

:19:29. > :19:36.hadn't had a kick, I was running around, chasing balls. He struggled

:19:36. > :19:41.with injury, but is now fit and enjoying himself. We have the likes

:19:41. > :19:46.of Croft, Bailey, Bryson, they all live in the same apartment, next

:19:46. > :19:51.door. They are always together. I and five or 10 minutes away. As

:19:51. > :19:55.soon as we can all get together, we all go out and socialise. Today the

:19:55. > :20:02.whole team went bowling and played snooker. This was the first time he

:20:02. > :20:12.had seen his goal. I have gone and not seen it at all to about 10

:20:12. > :20:15.

:20:15. > :20:20.Boris, the cameraman! Leicester City had an opening day party, but

:20:20. > :20:24.it came down like a popped balloon at the weekend. Expectations at the

:20:24. > :20:30.club sky high, so even Sven was left to describing the performance

:20:30. > :20:38.as poor and unacceptable. A free funfair for the kids was

:20:38. > :20:43.just part of the pre-game build up. How about a few Thai dancers? Atria

:20:43. > :20:50.with high-kicking girls. Thai massage for stressed fans, although

:20:50. > :20:56.this was not on offer after the game. Then some Leicester tradition.

:20:56. > :21:00.The team, packed with new signings, nothing could go wrong. Could it?

:21:00. > :21:05.They just could not live up to their billing. They created a for a

:21:05. > :21:13.few chances after a terrible first half, but dreadful defending gave

:21:13. > :21:21.Reading a deserved lead. An opening day blip for promotion favourites.

:21:21. > :21:25.We didn't play good football. We all get frustrated by it. The big

:21:25. > :21:33.point is, we have to do better. Sven will hope to see that when

:21:33. > :21:37.Bristol City visit in two days time. Huge news for Notts County. They

:21:37. > :21:42.are to play Juventus. The Italians have invited them to open venue

:21:42. > :21:45.41,000 seater stadium, with a game in Italy next month.

:21:45. > :21:49.The black and white of Notts County has more humble opponents, Charlton,

:21:49. > :21:53.to contend with on Saturday. While they were going down to the

:21:53. > :21:58.Londoners, finishing touches were being put to that game against

:21:58. > :22:02.Juventus. A century ago, the black- and-white shirts of Notts County

:22:02. > :22:07.were exported to Italy. They could hardly believe they have been

:22:07. > :22:13.invited to open the new stadium. Does it excite Martin Allen?

:22:13. > :22:17.course it does! I know there is a link between the Kits, but that

:22:17. > :22:21.still doesn't quantify, to me, paying for us all to go out there

:22:21. > :22:25.back and play them. They are planning a return game in

:22:25. > :22:30.Nottingham the following season. A stunning story from someone we

:22:30. > :22:35.have followed for years here. 22- year-old Chris Adcock from

:22:35. > :22:38.Ravenshead in Nottinghamshire sensationally won a silver medal at

:22:38. > :22:42.the world badminton -- World Badminton Championships. He was
